WIP Intros
Arson and Other Fires
Project Lifebloom dissolves in a flash flood of an investigation that leaves the previously thriving community of Second- and Third-Gen humans — genetically engineered for physical strength and physic abilities, respectively — packed away in prisons and scattered across the universe. On the Project's distant Outer Station, Avram Ashta has just enough advance warning to pack the next generation of young Lifebloom cadets, an eclectic collection of scientists and soldiers, and a weeks' worth of food onto a ship and flee with nothing more than a scrambled message from the Project's director promising that a safe homeland is out there waiting for them, if only they can find it. Five years later, he's left the children memory wiped and hidden on an obscure planet and is holding his increasingly fractious crew together with both hands. And then news comes of the director's arrest, and with it, the first clue in years of the homeland's location. Except this new version of Project Lifebloom is different than he remembers — or maybe not different at all.
Wherefore Art Thou, Caspian?
What happened to Caspian Anno? This is the question plaguing our unnamed protagonist, who wakes one morning to find themself in Caspian's body with no memory of who they are, how they got there, or why everyone seems to be afraid of them. Written in the format of letters to the illusive Caspian, our protagonist struggles with personhood, identity, and the dawning realization that something terrible might have happened to their body's original owner.
City Witches
Ten covens, twenty fighters, thirty matches. Vandion City's underground fighting circuit has grown from a handful of scrappy witches trading spells in someone's garage to an institution in its own right, maintained through subterfuge and bribery. So when a famous, flashy fighter from a neighbouring city joins her coven and threatens not only to disrupt this precarious homeostasis but to take her spot in the ring, Nev Parker — ruthless, fast, holding the league record for disqualifications and nicknamed "The Brute" by her opponents — is less than thrilled. When the new fighter dies under mysterious circumstances shortly after her first match, Nev finds herself the prime suspect as the league scrambles to find the culprit and cover up the death before it comes to the attention of the authorities.
The Long Year's Night
On an alternate version of Earth, the Antarctic is a strange place: impossible creatures appear from nowhere and vanish just as suddenly. A ten-kilometer walk one day is five the next and twenty the day after. Those who venture too far into the snow are plagued by strange visions, returning as hollow shells of themselves. Time bends, breaks, folds in on itself. On the eve of war, disgraced explorer Edward Lawrence gathers together a rag-tag group of scientists, sailors, and a young man who claims to have the ability to turn back time for his final attempt to reach the pole.

“What happened? When?”
“Vekara, boy, is this the first you’re hearing of it?” If Thomasin were a different person, she might sound sympathetic, or pitying; as it stood, her mouth tugged up in dry amusement. “Drank himself to death, last week. I can’t imagine it’s any surprise to you.”
“No, of course not.” Last week. God. He could have — if only — he’d always fucking hesitated. No better than Felix, when it came down to it. No better, except his father was dead and he was alive. “Is he... can I see him? What used to be him.”
“You’re in luck,” Thomasin said, standing, and it was such an absurd thing to say about his father’s death that Immanuel bit down hard on his lip, stifling a laugh because he did know what she meant: unclaimed bodies were kept in cold storage for a week, and then they were spaced. A day later and his father would already have been gone out the airlock.

There's this weird take I've seen floating around on TikTok that Bill doesn't actually care about his family/dimension or Stanford at all; that we're supposed to take everything in TBOB as non-canon basically because he's lying to garner sympathy from reader to make a deal with them. I'm all for having your own interpretations of media, but I just don't think this idea that Bill is a completely heartless unfeeling creature is supported by canon at all. In fact, it kind of feels like the opposite of the point of the book.
Like, yeah, most things Bill says should be taken with a grain of salt because he lies a lot, but he's not actually a very good liar? It's usually pretty easy to clock when he's full of it. But okay, even if we assume every word Bill says while trying to recruit the reader is a lie, there are three major things that this doesn't account for.
Bill is not the only source in the book. The lost Journal 3 pages were written by Stanford, we only know about the interdimensional Taco Bell incident because of an included police transcript, etc.
Even once he's lost any chance of making a deal with the reader to escape, Bill is having a complete breakdown and mentions all the people he so totally doesn't miss for real you guys. Why bother with reverse psychology double-lying for sympathy once his shot at getting the reader on his side is already gone?
Trying to garner the reader's sympathy makes sense to a certain extent, but why go out of his way to make himself look pathetic? Does revealing that he got drunk and cried over his ex in a fast-food drive-through really help his cause if that cause is to convince the reader he's still a powerful being capable of starting the apocalypse again so they can rule with him?
And that's all without even mentioning that, as previously stated, I think the entire point of the book is missed if we're interpreting Bill as having no genuine feelings or attachments. The book ends with Stanford healing from his past by being open about what he went through with his family and accepting their help, while Bill insists he doesn't need anyone and refuses to heal, actively making himself worse in the process. The clear theme imo is that accepting your past and accepting help from people who love you is essential to healing, while denying those things just makes everything worse. If Bill doesn't actually care about his family, his dimension, Stanford, or anything/anyone else, he has no trauma to heal from or regrets to learn from that he's refusing to accept and deal with, and the entire meaning of the book is made moot.

Homeless man with ‘flamethrower’ busted on suspicion of arson near LA’s Kenneth Fire after residents detain him
Tumblr media
Wow, I never suspected arson. Is this guy responsible for the fire?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is insane. The wind died down enough to allow the helicopters to spray the fire, but it doesn't look like it's doing much.

Because I’ve been thinking about it all day and I have never explained it on here, the Hymn AU. Basically, it’s very loosely based on the mythology of Persephone, Demeter and Hades.
Note it is loosely inspired, all familial relationships in Greek mythology have been ignored and backstories have been adjusted to explain this. This also has a lot of things that do not line up with the Hymn to Demeter or any other related mythology, but if you ever want to know about the actual mythology you should ask me. It’s a favorite research topic of mine.
Anyway! A bit of an overview: we have Persephone! Anne, Demeter! Sasha and Hades! Marcy.
Following the murder of the her followers, the Plantars, Anne travels to the underworld. Her go:al convince the god of the dead to release them so that they could have another chance at life. A plan that goes about as well as one would expect it to, her request is denied, after all the dead just aren’t meant to leave the underworld.
However in the process she meets Marcy, the aforementioned god of the dead, who takes sympathy on her and offers to let her stay in the underworld with her the Plantars. Anne will have the chance to move on and who knows maybe she’ll even be able to help Marcy improve her realm.
Meanwhile in the world of the living, Sasha is dealing with the aftermath of Anne leaving. And also the aftermath of her own poor choices: turns out smiting your girlfriend’s insignificant mortal followers is a bad idea. She is giving her space, kind of. She is worried though, and at some point this spirals into jealousy and then to just assuming that Marcy kidnapped Anne. A train of thought that goes so well and by that I mean, Sasha travels to the underworld, further destroys her relationship with Anne and then starts the apocalypse.
Around the same time, Marcy and Anne are growing closer: they’re friends, they’re going on dates, Anne has been helping Marcy communicate with the souls of the underworld, overall they’re just genuinely happy. There’s just… one tiny little issue: Marcy’s fear of abandonment/intense fear of anyone leaving the underworld. Specifically that Anne will leave, and soon unless somehow she manages to keep her here. And so she surprises her with a gift, an offering if you will, the first pomegranate they’d grown. And once Anne eats it she’s trapped in the underworld forever.

technically the premise of arson and other fires is like. what if your house got seized as evidence in a trial so you and your roommates had to take an indefinite road trip in a camper van you hotwired off the side of the road but it's designed for four people and there are nine of you. and then after three months of that you're all so tired of each other that you start collectively start making the worst life decisions humanly possible

Rules: you will be given a word. then you share one sentence/excerpt from your wip(s) that starts with each letter of your word!
The word is Mercy and the sentences are all from part 3 of my original fic, Arson and Other Fires.
M: "Maybe you don’t give one single flying fuck about another person working here, but you are also working here. Or here’s another idea: go fuck yourself with a rusty poker.”
E: “Everything is temporary, Manya; enjoy the ride while it lasts. Also enjoy the shower. You smell like a brewery.”
R: Rashida was still watching her, and there was something raw and hurt in the downturn of her mouth, now. Dita sat up to face her. Gentle as she could manage, she said, “You know there’s no version of this where I lived the life you wanted me to, right? I was never going to graduate and get a job and live some quiet, stable planet-side life. I’m not built for it.”
C: Contrary to popular belief, Sacha was not indiscriminate in his love of recreational arguments; he did, in fact, understand the value of positive relations when crammed into a tin can alongside the same people for the foreseeable future.
Y: "Your boy’s acting up again.”

I was clearly in a very great state of mind realizing my body dysphoria when I invented an OC who lives in a world where high-tech cyberpunky prosthetics are easily accessible but only for injuries that cause "significant impairment" (IE: losing your dominant hand/arm) so he shoved his dominant arm into a piece of machinery at his job to get a robot arm.
