Have you ever tried an Asparagus Pea (Tetragonolobus purpurea)?

This is a relative of peas rather than asparagus. The species is grown all over tropical Southeast Asia and is thought to have come from New Guinea originally. This plant is a novelty crop in western gardens but it has great potential to become a more economically important plant. For example, all parts of the plant are edible (with proper cooking), the seeds can be used in a similar way to soybeans, and it can be processed into feed for domestic animals. It’s very easy to grow in the UK.

We weren’t too impressed with the stringy pods and astringent taste of the pods but we may have not used the optimal cooking style.

Farm Fresh Outlet, 1251 E Valley Blvd, Alhambra, CA 91801

While the name makes me think of Sprouts or some mainstream produce market, Farm Fresh is a Chinese grocery store that opened earlier this year. It’s got a no-frills feel with no in-store deli or in-store bakery. However, the meat/seafood department is staffed and offers a complimentary fish fry service. They have live seafood in tanks and even live frogs (poor frogs).

The produce department was packed and the prices seemed pretty reasonable. They have a wide variety of Asian vegetables. Vegetables are packaged in plastic.

There’s a wide variety of noodles, rice, tea, snacks, spices, sauces, and the things you’d expect from an Asian grocery store. It’s smaller than 168 Market and 99 Ranch. The market seemed cleaner than your typical Chinese market but it is newer. They were playing Chinese music.

Global Fresh Supermarket, 6340 Rosemead Blvd, Temple City, CA 91780

Global Fresh takes over the old Valu Mart space. It’s a large supermarket with mostly Chinese groceries but also some Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean. Valu Mart had a no-frills, warehouse feel and Global Fresh has a warehouse feel as well. There is no in-store deli or prepared foods.

The produce selection has a wide variety of Asian vegetables (some packaged in plastic) and a good selection of fruit, including fresh durian. The ice cream selection included brands I hadn’t seen elsewhere but they didn’t have that many boba ice cream bar varieties. The meat and seafood counters are staffed. They have a wide variety of fish on ice and some live seafood in tanks. Fish prices are cheap but the cleaned fish in packages doesn’t specify the type of fish on the label. They had a large selection of mooncakes. Prices are generally lower than 99 Ranch, Great Wall, Arcadia Supermarket, and 168 Market.

You’ll find the typical snacks, rice, frozen dumplings, noodles, spices, tofu, tea, sauces, ice cream, housewares, alcohol, etc. They have one aisle for American and Hispanic foods. Parking should be easy to find.

They gave me a free bottled oolong tea...not sure why, grand opening special?
