Note, the Crazy Rich Asians sequel remains in development, and it’s being penned by Amy Wang. Both the spin-off and Crazy Rich Asians sequel will be tied to Kevin Kwan’s second book in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend. That book, in addition to covering Astrid and Charlie’s relationship, follows the Constance Wu and Henry Golding characters, Rachel and Nick, on a trip to Shanghai to find the former’s birth father.

Let me summarise all the books first Crazy Rich Asians: Rachel Chu and Nicholas Young, Chinese descendents in the U.S. have been dating for two years. Nick later invites Rachel to come to Singapore to attend a wedding and meet his family. Upon their arrival, Rachel finds out that Nick comes from a rich Singaporean family - old money, ey. Little that Rachel knows, she will have to face the Nick’s mother who thinks that she's not good enough for her son and deal with the old Chinese tradition. China Rich Girlfriend: Nick lays his choice on Rachel. He decides to live a low life with Rachel in the US. It means that he has to leave his family. Nick is no longer in touch with her mother for over two years. His mum is not allowed to come and visit the wedding. Ah, nothing can stop Eleanor Young for getting what she wants. She comes to the wedding in style only to announce that she knows Rachel’s biological father. Rich People Problem: Grandmother Su Yi is on her deathbed and everyone in the rich family. If you want to see more of Nick and Rachel Young, you will be disappointed. They only have a small portion here. I've finished rereading Kevin Kwan’s Trilogy after several unsuccessful attempts. It's supposed to be an easy and entertaining reading. Well, the 1st book was; the 2nd and 3rd were a little bit so-so. I was left sighing like there's something missing in the last two books...like they’re there because Kwan was forced to write for a commercial purpose yet his soul was not into them. I ended up admiring other characters like Astrid. Her life is more lively and colourful than the main couple. I love how she chooses her path by marrying Michael who happens to be a commoner at first; how she deals with her low-esteem-turn-to-be-a-control-freak-and-end-up-as-an-asshole husband, Michael Teo. She defo knows what to do with her life and she sticks with it until the end of the book (Book 3) in which she picks to be with her childhood sweetheart Charlie Wu. If I can be honest, I would only read the first book and watch the movie then skip the other last two books. It is not because they're badly written but because they’re poorly executed. I just love Nick so much; I don't want him to lose his mom again. So, I just wanted you to know: that one day—when he marries another lucky girl who is enough for you, and you're playing with your grandkids while the Tan Hua's are blooming, and the birds are chirping—that it was because of me: a poor, raised by a single mother, low class, immigrant nobody.

Rachel is a warm, grounded girl who is blindsided at every turn by Nick, his family, and his world. It never occurs to her that he might be more than who he says he is, or that Amanda might have ulterior motives, or about what kind of environment she's dealing with, or even the sort of opponent Eleanor might be. With one notable exception, Rachel is actually extremely skilled at getting people to like her. She is gracious and amiable, immediately connecting with Nick's friends, family members and even feels at ease around them once the initial shock wears off. And despite Eleanor's suppositions, she is anything but self-centered: she puts aside her own desires to preserve Nick's relationship with his family, only agreeing to marry him when she's sure they've got his family's approval.

Nick is a kind, sensitive man who loves his family, but he's established firm personal boundaries regarding how much control they can have over his life. He continually stands up for the right to make his own choices when facing his authoritarian mother, pushing for his autonomy under all circumstances.  Nick is all romantic idealism: he doesn't want to be defined by his wealth, is drawn to Rachel because she doesn't see his material status, but who he really is, and believes he can live his life on his own terms despite the weight of his name and the ideas people have for his life. For the most part he does. He refuses to return to Singapore when his family wants him to, and he introduces his Chinese-American girlfriend  to his family when he knows they won't approve and decides to marry her despite his mother's objections. He even picks Rachel over his family, deciding to cut them off because he's personally offended by their demands.

Astrid Young Teo: ISFJ

It was never my job to make you feel like a man. I can't make you something you're not.

Astrid constantly minimizes herself to make her husband comfortable. Years of practice has allowed her to perfect this system of buying expensive things and hiding it from him that she and her housemaids work like a well-oiled machine. She is unfailingly kind and generous, first with the little girl at the jewelry store, and then offering to help her husband to help him out with his start-up, always reassuring his worth whenever he feels insecure. Nick describes her as having the biggest heart of them all. Astrid instantly bonds with Rachel, telling her about Michael's affair. But when it comes down to it, she compartmentalizes the problem, declaring that it should be something they deal with after the wedding and refusing to express her feelings about it with Michael because it wouldn't be appropriate.

Eleanor Sung-Young: ESTJ

I chose to help my husband run a business and to raise a family. For me, it was a privilege. But for you, you may think it's old-fashioned. Family first—it is Eleanor’s motto. She’s always put her duty first, even when she was young, dropping out of Oxford so that she could manage her household and the family business with her husband. She judges harshly and quickly. She dislikes Rachel before she’s even met her, concluding Rachel doesn’t share her beliefs, would never understand them, or ever be enough for this world, and once her mind is made up, she refuses to change it.
