I don't think that tracks. When the archery contest is described in the Odyssey, it specifies that the arrow flies through the handles of the axes.

στειλειή = handle of a tool such as an axe or hammer

It's assumed that the handles had a hole at the end, presumably for hanging the axes on the wall or something. So one literal-ish translation goes "When he had taken aim he let fly, and his arrow pierced every one of the handle-holes of the axes from the first onwards till it had gone right through them, and into the outer courtyard."

I'm actually not 100% sure if the original says handles or handle-holes. (Someone tag a classicist if you know any!) But it definitely wasn't the axe heads.

Looks like I won’t be marrying Penelope…

Hopefully the upcoming film will have enough budget for the other 11 axes!
