Literally my best friend ever!!! Every time she shows up in a comic I point at her and smile!!! She’s the vigilante known as spoiler & batgirl & was a robin before getting fridged because of editorial mandate and misogyny she deserves so much better @_@. The m/m that some people hate her for is timkon; like they ARE very gay but people are genuinely insane about hating her instead of also realizing that she too is gay (insane amount of subtext w her bff cass). Basically she was Tim’s girlfriend for a long time on and off. People will literally call her abusive for no reason they’ll be like oh but she didn’t apologize for starting a gang war accidentally and faced no consequences for it :/ as if she wasn’t literally KILLED OFF BRUTALLY. And although hate is rarer for her nowadays from what I’ve seen she’s also a victim of Background Lesbian Syndrome. And also a victim of Woman Not Allowed To Have Ocmplex Feelings in the source material itself (tim is canonically bi now yay but like steph wasn’t allowed to have any complicated feelings at all at her on again off again ex breaking up with her for good???). Anyways she’s the light of my life.

she’s the light of my life my baby girl my everything. she canonically dated tim drake, but people love to ship tim with his male friend kon or his male brothers (🤢🤮) and so they constantly sideline her, making her the quirky wingwoman or sometimes even villainizing her by trying to claim she was abusive to tim. i don’t know why so many people hate her my girl will literally just be standing there and people will hate on her.

Stephanie was first introduced in the 1994 Robin series as a side love interest for Robin, but when she turned out to be really popular she became the main love interest. Because of this, she was fully fleshed out as a vigilante calling herself Spoiler to try and take down her villainous father, the Cluemaster. She later grew a lot closer to other cast members, such as Batgirl and Oracle, to get herself a firmly established place among the bats. Then, she dies in a gang war after taking up the Robin mantle. Eventually, in 2009, she was brought back from the dead and took on the Batgirl mantle. Her and Robin get back together sometime around ~2010 and they are solidly together until 2021. Then, Robin breaks up with her off panel for zero reason in canon, only to date some really boring guy named Bernard. By fanon, she's often demonized and turned into an abuser to make either this ship, or a lot of other mlm ships happen. Either that or things are mysteriously set in the time she's dead despite characters who were not yet introduced until she returned appearing. strange.

Amy Rose

WAUGH okay so basically like everyone villainizes her when shipping Sonic with any other character (and 99% of the time its Amy being villainized against a m/m ship ://) but yeah Amy canonically has a "crush" on Sonic and stuff (which is weird in its self cuz age gaps and things but creators smh) and anyways any time people write Sonic in a relationship with other characters they always make her super upset and mad that Sonic isn't dating her etc etc and basically make her a pouting 12 year old because her super hero crush doesn't date her instead of writing her as a supportive best friend to sonic WHICH SHE SHOULD BE WRITTEN AS !!!! and uh yeah if you couldn't tell this makes me so upset because amy is such a good character people should stop ruining her

Even outside of yaoi, she is the most hated character in the FRANCHISE. THERE ARE ENTIRE WEBSITES DEDICATED TO HATING ON HER. HER MERE EXISTANCE CREATES SHIP WARS. IT IS HELL. EVEN THE OFFICIAL TWITTER ACCOUNT AND THE ARCHIE COMICS HATED ON HER IN THE PAST.

Not only is she a incredibly serious victim of yaoi, she is bashed in every fic where Sonic is paired with someone other than her. And when she is paired with someone other that Sonic, Sonic is bashed. And when she is paired with Sonic, other characters commonly paired with Sonic are bashed. It is a chain reaction of madness. Even outside of shipping, she is one of the most hated characters in the fandom. She was flanderized to ridiculous amounts. Even the official Sonic twitter used to mock her. Even official gaming news sites mock her, with a particularly horrible case being when TheGamer outright said Sonic being paired with TAILS is better than Sonic being paired with Amy. The amount of hate this character has attracted is incredibly large. There are entire websites dedicated to hating her.

so his whole thing is he's an inquisitor who is just fundamentally bad at being a priest on account of he does things like forgetting scripture and not being able to help but doubt the institution which gets everyone hes ever cared about killed. he's gay. he says shit like "careful, i bite". he's in yuri with a holy knight. he's one of my favorite characters and i want to beat him over the head with a cast iron skillet

fucked up gay little cleric who was supposed to grapple with the fact that the institution he serves is corrupt except he has been in doubt from the very beginning and very clearly doesnt put much stock in the scripture hes made it his lifes work to preach. hes kinda a freak with it. every line he speaks is said with the cadence of a gay guy checking under his nails while ignoring you as he talks. i have to hit him with mallets and shatter him into pieces.

This man is the world's worst clergyman. He's a high ranking member of the holy inquisition, but nobody respects him and he mostly just uses his position to investigate random murders for fun. He regularly forgets how the bible goes and little kids have to correct him on how the plot goes of the jrpg equivalent of jesus's resurrection. He has a holy knight for a boyfriend. He tortures people for information any other character can just ask for. His best friend out of the rest of the main 8 is an assassin and gang member. He tries to get people to commit crimes with him. His story is about uprooting the corruption in his church and killing high ranking church members and also Literal Fucking Jrpg satan. He regularly blasphemes and everyone around him looks in horror as he shouts at god and encourages people to become atheists. His catchphrase is "doubt is what I do." He is still somehow the most devout character in the entire game despite being a total fuck up of a cleric who does not deserve to be here whatsoever. Pls let him win it'd be SO FUNNY

Hes genuinely just the funniest guy. Very little about his story has to do with the faith but like. He routinely roasts the entire pantheon of in-universe gods. He beats people up (metaphorically of course) as one of his main game mechanics. He got stamped as the resident gayboy SO fast. His starliner definitely has higher intelligence than wisdom even though clerics use wisdom. Every chapter he appears in he solves a mystery by zoning out so hard his god blesses him with extremely vivid hallucinations. He's so deeply fucking traumatized. One of his battle skills is fully just beating his enemies up with his staff. He ends up defunding the police. He can very casually become a thermonuclear bomb but in a very holy way. His best friend is a 23-year-old assassin that exclusively calls him "Detective". Is he Catholic (ish)? Yeah, but he certainly doesn't always act like it.

He constantly commits heresy and doubts the gods but is still the not-Pope's right hand man

Listen, imagine you'd go to church and your priest gets roasted by kids for forgetting how the bible goes. That's him, canonically even. He's like if a redditor who wants to be a detective was cosplaying as a holy man. He's someone whose whole thing is doubting the gods and the church, to the point where he makes another person question his faith too, even though he is technically The holy man. He's absolutely unhinged and gay. He's 30 years old and absolutely does not look like it. He's traumatized, and cannot be sincere and honest about his feelings even once. He should go to therapy actually. Like desperately. For his sake and everyone around him.

he is from the faith but he doubts everything around him to find the truth through it........ also i'd like to see him torment the crotchety priest i had to do a face-to-face confession with in high school. it'd be funny.

FATHER BROWN BUT MAKE HIM GAY AND PLAGUED BY TRUST ISSUES. This man will forget his own sermons, beat people up for infos and, at the same time, gets to be the fantasy equivalent of a youth pastor. He somehow manages to be the most unhinged person in a party that includes a vengeful math professor who can and WILL mug people. He might not be the most devout Catholic of them all, but he is definitely the *funniest* one. Give it up for the world's shittiest priest!

i’m gonna be honest temenos is a TERRIBLE catholic but he’s funny and i love him. he also has a weird gay thing going on with a paladin it’s great.

gay bitch fangirls over always sunny

i've just realized that tumblr is the perfect place for a queer bitch to nerd out about her favorite show. i finished it a month ago and...oof, i love this thing. i find it weirdly beautiful in a way. i enjoy seeing the most dysfunctional people put to air's misadventures, and i am definitely one of the disturbed people this show comforts lmao.

despite functionally/nominally about being horrible people doing horrible things, the gang somehow never quite lose every scrap of humanity they have; i guess by virtue of being white trash instead of upper-class. there are times when the gang are appalled at the atrocities someone ELSE comments, and sometimes when even they feel maybe they're going too far. (they usually don't things like "no" stop em tho...)

i also love the way it weaponizes every facet of being a sitcom, and uses them to comment on what happens within the show: +you can just pop in at any time during the show's run and not be too lost, not extremely reliant on past events & arcs

-the gang experiencing extremely traumatic events is not an "arc" or something that is ever dealt with/brought up again, considering their ol' reliable is drinking it down & not talking about it

-as sitcoms go on, they typically become sadder, as it just gets depressing that this group of people literally has nothing else to do with their lives.

+depressing is the point.

-as sitcoms go on, characters typically undergo "flanderization", where previously minor aspects of their character become their entire personality within the show. typically is extremely annoying

+the gang functions as a vicious echo chamber that they are trapped within, as no one in the outside world can stand being with them. also, they are CHRONIC abusers of alcohol & a million other substances like glue. it makes sense that charlie only becomes more illiterate, considering his habits (which include eating cat food & huffing glue) never really change

-to keep sitcoms running, the characters remain perfectly static throughout, and it is only really the situations & people around them that change

+the core of what makes the characters who they are doesn't change much over 15 seasons, but they DO grow with the times; just very, VERY slowly. i think they've handled this adeptly; in season 10, they eased off dennis' creep-oness in the second episode by having him be on the RECEIVING end of his weird rating system, in one of the most hilarious & quotable moments of a show that is already hilarious & quotable throughout. I'M A FIVE STAR MAN!!!!

there's prolly even more i can't think of. but it is such BRUTAL satire of...basically anything i CAN think of. it's this satire that gives depth to, what on the surface, might appear as a banal show that only exists to be offensive. the writers actually do NOT write to offend anybody (except maybe rly stuffy stuck-up ppl lmao)! it started as basically just wanting to write a sitcom that's "real", about a group of friends that are NEVER there for each other (tho they ARE there for each other, sometimes!). and this ended up being the perfect vehicle to satirize a LOT of facets about american life.

i also LOVE the way sunny handles queerness! it is not something that inherently makes you a better NOR a worse person, but it's also smth that always deserves respect, no matter who the queer person is. this is where its sitcom format works beautifully yet again; after mac's genuinely moving coming out moment as the s13 finale, s14 starts off...the way any other season starts off, and i LOVE that.

(sidenote: i don't think mac's brief coming out then re-entering the closet in s11 is an issue! that's real life. a friend of mine realized she was prolly trans, then decided she wasn't, and recently re-realized that she is lol. THAT'S LIFE!!!! tho, it would've been an issue if mac NEVER came out i think, but they had him come out in s12, and come out beautifully to his dad in s13)

i think always sunny succeeds at having...let's say, "very morally complicated" characters, while not accidentally glorifying them as much as the sopranos or breaking bad (tho i still love those shows hehe), while still having them be human. i think it is a beautifully human show. the show does not lie in the SLIGHTEST about who these people are, yet i am still excited to see another season with this gang i somehow do still root for. it shows us EVERYTHING about who these people are with less shame than we think about ourselves. we share in their every high, every low [of which there are many], and everything in between. and that's what bein' human is all about.

Okay. I’ve given it some thought, so here’s my two cents for the fandom:

Overall, I enjoyed season 2. I did. I binged the whole thing in less than two days, it was THAT good. And I’m rewatching it while I still can bc I won’t have Netflix anymore at the end of the month (thanks for ending the password sharing bullshit Netflix, y’all are losing five clients in a single go, congratulations). So just listen.

I had so much fun watching this, through and through. I laughed, I mourned, I aww’d, I nearly ripped my hair out at the character shenanigans (looking at you, Kaz). It was GOOD, it was cool. The changes, though... I’m not entirely sure I’m all about them. I’ll speak for the Six of Crows and King of Scars duologies because I’ve read those, I haven’t picked up the Shadow & Bone trilogy so I won’t touch up on those plots much because I have nothing to compare them to. I thought they were fine, it was fun watching it all play out and how it ended.

The good stuff first, then. The characters are all PERFECT. In fact, I think what held this show together so well was the characters themselves and seeing them all interact. WhiCH MEANS I NEED MORE TOLYA AND NINA BONDING OVER FOOD AND NIKOLAI AND KAZ TRYING TO OUTSMART EACH OTHER AND INEJ AND JESPER DYNAMICS AND-- You get it.

I guess I’m just... disappointed that it was all so rushed. Like, when I realized we were watching basically the whole plotline for Crooked Kingdom BEFORE Six of Crows, my whole heart dropped to my feet. It was like “woah, what?” What does this mean for the Crows’ future, then? And the reason why I’m disappointed is because I was expecting it all to come MUCH LATER when we have Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom as it’s own show, just like the books.

This feels like... ew, it feels like fanservice. Like they didn’t know what to do with the Crows until they became relevant for the Shadow & Bone plot so they shoe-horned CK into it to play for time, and it made all those delicious scenes that were carefully built up in the story fall flat due to lack of context. Examples:

They killed Heleen off-screen so Inej won’t get to screw her over and get much deserved payback for being trafficked into sexual slavery;

We don’t get ANY Helnik development that culminates into that heartbreaking last scene, and in fact we don’t even get to see Nina and Matthias interact except for a couple of scenes from a distance and Matthias’ horny daydreaming;

We don’t get to see how Wylan not being able to read affected HIS ENTIRE LIFE until he ends up with the Crows;

We get a snippet of Jesper’s backstory but THAT’S IT;

Wesper was CUTE AS HELL I LOVE MY TWO LITTLE GAYS SO MUCH AAAAAA but again, I was looking forward to the slow burn;

Matthias allying with Pekka Rowlins in prison is kinda cool actually, I’m interested to see where that’s going plus the fact we’re not done with Rowlins yet, but I swear if they butcher Matthias’ arch for something more action packed and exciting, I am going to physically vomit;

Kaz breaking into the Slat to beat up Per Haskell’s gang as a one man army running on THE POWER OF TEENAGE HORNINESS, one of my most favorite scenes in the book that I was looking forward to, makes no sense because we never see the Dregs in the show again (that I remember, we’ll get back on that after a rewatch) so what was the point??

We got Kaz’s backstory, but it was spedrun through so it ends up not having much of an impact. I know if I had gone in blind without all I know from reading the Six of Crows duology, it wouldn’t have mattered much to me no matter how much I loved the character. We don’t even get to know Jordie much, and knowing a little about him is what makes his demise and Kaz’s story so crushing and compelling. This is one of the core rules of character writing, for fuck’s sake! I’m no professional but even I know this! If you don’t get to know the character, you can’t connect with that character and so anything that happens to them is just “oh that’s sad. ANYWAY.” Without having read the books, the whole thing falls apart! Can you tell how much I detest fanservice? I went into this show knowing basically nothing about it and I loved it because the story’s pace and the character moments and the twists were SO WELL CRAFTED AND PUT TOGETHER. Hell, this show is what got me running to the store to buy Six of Crows and devouring it all the way to Rule of Wolves, so again, and I cannot stress this enough, what the fuck is going on here??

Individually, the scenes related to Crooked Kingdom were great. Pretty decently adapted, and like I said, perfect character emulation. The only one I didn’t enjoy as much was Kaz helping Inej with her arm because the baggage that was supposed to build it up is missing, so it got watered down to him just cleaning that cut instead of battling through his touch aversion and winning just long enough for him to actually bandage her and treat her wounds and even managing to kiss her neck! It feels like such a victory in the book before it all comes crashing down because we got A BOOK AND A HALF worth of mutual pinning and learning how crippling it is for Kaz to even think about skin-to-skin contact. The scene I read over and over again for days, cut down to a couple of minutes of basically not much. Sad.

Also they’re setting up for Tolya to fall in love with Inej (which I can’t blame him for, I mean, it’s Inej) and I’m like “uh, NO?” Not just because Kanej is THE SHIP for me, but because... Okay, no, I admit it’s just because Kanej is THE SHIP for me, but that’s my fault. Who knows, maybe they’ll make something interesting with this. I mean, they wouldn’t permanently break up one of the most iconic couples in literature just for the giggles or (dreaded) subversion of expectations, right?... Right..........?

For the rest of it, because I read the King of Scars duology, I’m kinda mad at some of the things they changed because I was expecting Alina and Mal to have a happily ever after taking care of their 500 orphans in Keramzin? I was expecting Genya to have SOME happiness before David is killed, just cut this girl some slack, would ya??? And Mal becoming Sturmhond?? Where did THAT come from??????? WHAT ABOUT INEJ GETTING HER OWN SHIP FROM KAZ AND FOLLOWING HER NEW-FOUND DREAM OF BECOMING THE SCURGE OF ALL SLAVERS?? Sure, she’s gotta find her brother first and then they gotta find their family and all, that’s fine I guess?? At least were giving THAT some room to breathe!!

*Sigh* Look. I got a couple of theories for why this is happening.

One: as previously mentioned, Leigh Bardugo and the rest of the team didn’t know what to do with the Crows so they put in the plot of Crooked Kingdom to buy time for them. I believe it’s well understood within fandom that Shadow & Bone couldn’t have gotten as big of a deal as it did if it weren’t for the Crows, but the Crows would have stood on their own easily enough without Shadow & Bone, so they needed to give them screen time from episode one forward to keep the audience, like they did with season 1.

Two: Leigh Bardugo and the rest of the team don’t trust Netflix to renew the show to conclusion OR green-light the Six of Crows show (which, y’know, fair), and their faith is so shaky they decided it was best to have Siege & Storm and Ruin & Rising put into a single season (heard book readers say this is what happened), plus bring in the Crooked Kingdom plot to at least give the book fans a consolation treat while still leaving enough loose ends to continue the story IF they do in fact get good news. And since I trust Leigh Bardugo to write a good story because she can, I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and willing to believe the second case is true, because that at least makes SOME sense. If the show gets cancelled and Six of Crows never comes to life, I can live with that.

All in all, it was a hell of a ride and I enjoyed myself. It’s not what I wanted, but I had fun and that’s all that matters in the end. I give Shadow & Bone season 2 a solid 7/10. Yup.

i'm glad you had a nice time!! thanksgiving was mostly uneventful, but still good! now for the disney channel questions: so i know you're a huge fan of best friends whenever, and i'm not sure if you've been asked about this before, but had there been a third season is there anything in particular you would have liked to see in terms of themes, episodes or relationships in general? - gcwca secret santa

i haven't been asked this before!!! this is such a fun question!

i would have loved to see more of barry and naldo's dynamic, particularly as it pertained to them having the ability to time travel now. i would've also liked to see naldo and daisy being besties just bc i think they deserve it. in terms of episodes, i would've loved to see more episodes where the gang jumps to the future (perhaps as motivated by barry wanting to learn what new scientific discoveries can happen? i assume that the reason they didn't do a lot of the future ones is just bc. disney channel budget limitations etc but this is my dream s3). i would've loved to see if the gang helping daisy not marry sebastian had current day repercussions somehow? mostly i think i would've wanted to see the gang all time travelling together — i'd be interested in if the time travel powers work if it it's naldo and cyd or barry and shelby and etc — i imagine it wouldn't, but maybe an episode where they pair off into different duos to try this or to try and get closer and see if they can make the time travel work if they become better friends would be fun? i will also say that as someone who just felt entirely uninterested in the naldo/cyd romantic relationship dynamic i am glad we didn't get a s3 bc i didn't really want to see more of that — to me they read as gay man/lesbian besties. all of that being said i would have loved to see more of naldo's and barry's and cyd's lives and families — we never meet cyd's parents at all, even via time travel, even though we meet barry and naldo's dads in the past at one point. also iirc s2 confirmed that barry had a sister we never meet? i would've loved to meet her, that could've been fun.

this was kind of rambly and i am sure i will come up with a million things i also would've liked to see the second i publish this ask but c'est la vie one supposes. this was such a fun ask !!! if you were writing s3, what would you have wanted to add?

NOT ME the Series - A Retrospective

Hate to be a Debbie downer bc I know so many people are attached to Not Me (me included), but there’s some loose threads in the show that I think desperately needed tying up, that I feel the need to address. (SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY) Buckle up y’all, this is gonna be MAD long:

Gramblack. Ok what the actual fuck was that. So they didn’t have to make everyone gay, and yes there are signs to Gram being queer if not explicit, but this wasnt queerbaiting, this was just straight up relationship baiting!! A good chunk of the first half of the show was White considering Gram, whether he was friend or foe, taking into account their relationship at uni and in the gang. Everyone was like ‘black and gram so close!!’ Forget the Eugene plot point (which I happily will, Film I’m so sorry honey they dragged you thru this), even without a romantic subtext they were friends?? After Black comes back the only interaction they have is when fighting over Eugene?? Everything they’ve established about Gram, and frankly everyone in the gang is that above all they are ride or die for their friends. Would Gram really value a girl, and not just a girl but a girl who is his best friend’s ex, someone still hung over her ex, and who frankly isn’t really interested in him, over his best friend??? They didn’t get the reunion they (or we) deserved, and honestly somewhere in the show Gram’s entire personality became ‘Eugene-chaser’, like he was purely incidental to the gang, the activism, the friendships, just a pawn in Sean/Todd/Tawi’s games. Maybe it came down to the fact that there were too many storylines to keep track of. It’s impossible to have almost 12 characters with their backstories and developments, and try to develop not only their individual stories and relationships but also progress the plot and conflict. Rough stuff, you get some at the risk of giving up the other, but at the end of the day everything feels incomplete.

The Twins' parents. We got them in the flashbacks, we got White's dad in a couple of eps in the beginning of his double life, and we got that epic scene with Black's mom. We know that they're both estranged with their mom, so it's understandable why we never see her again, altho it might have been cool to maybe see her motivations? Maybe she was tied up with Tawi, or the crazy top cop who threatened Dan in EP13? It just felt so random and disconnected. Especially since she knows her kids, it would've added an extra element of personal danger for the gang if she worked for Tawi. Also, what happens to White and his dad once White is fully integrated in the gang as Black, waaaay before his reveal?? At that point he's not living a double life, it's just a single life? Doesn't his dad wonder where he's staying?? His son has just come back from Russia and he's fucked off to god knows where and he just doesn't care? He's clearly not doing the diplomacy thing, what's happened to that? None of us are toddlers, we all have object permanence, it's not like the moment we stop seeing White's original lifestyle that it doesn't exist anymore?? And now that Black is back, who goes to uni and studies what? Like, just what?????

Tawi. He was supposed to be the big baddie of the show, symbolic of the corrupt Big Corporation, Big Industry, Big Monopoly/Oligopoly, but other than him being bad and us being told that constantly, we know nothing about Tawi. He had no agency, and was pretty 2D as a character. For some reason, Namo seemed to have weight to her character in a way that Eugene just didn't, like Eugene's every move orbited around some guy (Bechdel who), so honestly after the whole Black/Eugene break up, if they just left her alone and maybe focused on developing Tawi's story and relationship to the gang a bit more, I think that could have been cool. Everything about Tawi as a character, not as a symbolic archetype, just seemed so ambiguous. What were his intentions, did he do the things he denied doing or not, how much did he know about the gang and cop Dan, how personally involved was he with the dealings of his company, who was the person higher up he was talking to in the last episode? While he's one of the top men, he's also clearly not the one right at the top. Was it the cop threatening Dan? Todd had a better backstory and development than Tawi, and Tawi was the actual villain; Todd and Black were just equal and opposite antiheros.

Black. Honestly I think the show did my boy Black the dirtiest, especially at the end. He deserved, if not a happy ending, a hopeful one. I don't understand this idea of White having usurped Black's spot in the gang, because the fact of the matter is that they have different skills and could have different roles to play in the group. White talks about Black having sacrificed his role in the group for White, but White sacrificed his whole life for Black!! White has his boyfriend and all his friends around him, what does Black have? His methods weren't the greatest, i'll admit, (altho him putting Todd into a coma was one of the funniest things he could've done, my rage-filled gremlin child), but his intentions were some of the strongest in the group. Just because he isn't as burdened down by feelings as the others, doesn't mean he doesn't have them?? Justice for my boy Black!!

The Ending. Now, don't get me wrong, some parts of the finale were so cathartic and honestly beautiful. The scene where they are rescued from the van, and they realise that in a way they've won, because they don't have to fight from the shadows and alone anymore, something something poetic cinema. The combined relief, joy, shock, bursting out of chest feelings, it was everything. But it felt like too ambiguous of an end. In a way it makes sense, because they didn't actually achieve the tangible thing except for rallying the people to be vocal about their cause and about protesting for social justice, implying that the fight still lives on. However, I think we needed to see some kind of consequence. Todd got his consequence, and we got to see Gumpa (dedicating himself to the future fights for justice) and DanYok (establishing their new status quo) in the new order. I guess I needed to see what happens to Tawi, and also a different closure for SeanWhite. They've both been fighting for so long, especially Sean, that after all the momentum of the first 13 eps, the last one for them (esp 4/4) just falls a bit flat. Ofc they needed to take a moment for themselves, away from the cloud of vigilante activism hanging over their heads constantly, but for me SeanWhite aren't 'still' people. They need movement, they need activity, they need action. It would've suited them better to maybe end the series by showing them back in the garage, planning the next activity, or even outside the garage with other protesters fully in the open public. So much of SeanWhite was centered around them revolving around each other, that once they found each other and effectively stopped moving, it almost felt a bit static.

White's characterisation. This is only for the last few episodes of White, once Black wakes up and White is allowed to be White again. While White has changed his mentality on his priorities after joining the gang, it's like the moment he stops pretending to be Black he loses all of his strength. And I don't only mean physical strength, although that is partially it - he just turns into Sean's personal limpet. And that's all great and fine for Sean, Sean who has had no one truly on his side until White, but I had really felt like White had shaken off some of his 'damsel-in-distress' behavior from his childhood, except he reverts right back to that the moment everyone knows he's White. It's in even greater contrast to Black when we see them together, but after pretending to be Black for so long, I would have expected him to have imbibed some of those behaviors (Sean shouldn't have had to 'take care of him', because frankly White should've been able to take care of himself by that point).

The jumps. 👀

Conclusion: too much. I think a lot of what bothered me is the same thing that bothered me in WHY R U? - there was too much going on. When I saw WHY R U?, I (and I would hazard a guess a good majority of the watchers) could only focus on the two main pairings (Fighter/Tutor, Saifah/Zon). There were probably at least 3 other side pairings that I can't barely remember because frankly it was too much to keep up with. WRU was too much unnecessary romance, and Not Me was almost too much plot. In just 14 episodes, we had to cover the following: The gang's main activities and training, Sean's backstory with Tawi, White's subterfuge and hiding that, White's investigation for Black and his relationship with Todd, Gram's backstory with Black and Eugene, Dan and Yok's romance, White's relationship with his father, the general debates on politics and lawfulness and justice and queer rights in contemporary Thailand, Black's relationship with a variety of people, Dan and his battle between law and his heart, Sean and White's romance. Anyone else think it's a lot? Yeah, it's a lot. Even just by cutting down on one or two of these plot points, it would've been easier to properly focus on and flesh out the rest of the issues, satisfactorily investigating and concluding them.

P.S. None of this is against P'Nuchy, or Off, Gun, First, Fluke, Papang, Mond, Film, or any of the team in the show. A lot of these decisions may have been entirely out of their hands, or were simply a result of how things turned out, without more time or a larger budget to fix things. The only reason I criticise the show this deeply is because I cared about it that much - I think it had so much potential, and lived up to almost all of it, but missed a mark on just a couple things. I am proud of the message that the show put forth, proud of the actors for their physical and emotional commitment to their characters and the story (hello?? oscar for Gun ATP now thank you very much), and proud of the work that the entire cast and crew put in to create this groundbreaking raw political drama, that had romance but was also heartbreakingly real, and important and relevant. A step in the right direction for raising awareness and fighting for social justice and equality, justice for the common man and for queer rights.

And before anyone says that the romance aspect of the show was 'unrealistic' - far from it!! Romance and love is hope, and hope isn't just something that exists, it's something that we have to actively critically manifest and cultivate. Because without hope (for a better future), what are we all fighting for?

Almost put it in the tags of the previous post but this deserves its own post: what if Vickie is the wrong girl? Robin said she's sacred of the consequences of asking out the wrong girl. What if it's foreshadowing?

Let's analyze:

1. In seasons 1 and 2 it is very well established this is a homophobic time/place. Lots of characters are picked on with the implication they might be gay. It happens twice a homophobic slur is used in combination with a beating. Then suddenly they give us a gay character and its all fun and cute. They could have had a change of heart, but if they are planning to be consistent: Robin has been having way too easy a time of it.

2. The costumer in that near 30 minute video said "our new character Vickie". But the truth is Vickie has barely been a character at all... so it's hinting at more to come. So Vickie matters. But what bugs me is that they spend barely any time on building a Robin/Vickie romance (and instead gave Robin and Nancy a lot of screentime together). If it's just a nice easy romance for Robin, it seems too inconsequential to play it out in full in the last season where there will be a lot of pressure to wow everyone and wrap up a lot of plots.

3. I dont think they introduced the fullblown Satanic Panic arc implicating the entire hellfire club just for quick shock value. I think thats gonna be a very important plot point - that the entire gang gets dragged into this. Vickie publicly outing Robin and using that to spur people on against her/the gang on top of all else would tie that in. (I also see the most tragic Steddie/Fruity Four potential here... holy shite).

4. The West Memphis Three case was brought up as an important inspiration for Eddie's arc. I dont know at this point what is rumor and what is truth, but I looked it up and it seems very clear this has been an inspiration for Stranger Things before. (Very much not recommend looking it up, there are way too many gruesome details on the Wiki page.) One of the dead kids was literally called Byers, the way he was described kind of sounded like Will, and a lot of Will's disappearance plot rang very similar. So maybe I've completely lost my shit but there was an important witness in this case called Vickie. This real life Vickie swore to the police that she was with the three guys convicted for the crimes at a satanic ritual and heard them confess to the murders - this was a major point towards convicting these guys. Some fifteen years later, she recanted. Saying she had made that all up cause she felt coerced by the police/was scared of what the police might have on her. If they took inspiration from these real life people and events while keeping the name once, why not twice?

5. Stranger Things is a show that really makes you look right at the ugly bits of life. The social issues the characters are facing, the tough family lives, characters falling apart from trauma - unlike many other entries in similar genres they don't gloss it over. And honestly? I think that is when the show is at its best. So i think it would be very on brand for this show to go right where it hurts, and Vickie taking things badly and using Robin's sexuality against her would be very painful (but also a very real experience gay folk have gone through). There would also be a nice side arc for Steve with the guilt he could feel for pushing Robin.

I really hope I’m wrong, because woof this will be so painful. But if I Sherlocked this one out I’m also gonna be kinda proud.

UH OH YOU JUST OPENED THE FLOODGATES so the short answer is pretty much every major character but I am a high-effort bitch so let's do this: Taylor Hebert: jfc, I could probably hit a word count limit talking about Taylor alone. First you have the dumb as shit TINO (Taylor In Name Only) phenomenon where people just straight up SI as Taylor but pretend it's her and she's basically a different person wearing Taylor's skin like an ill-fitting suit. Then there's the Memetic Escalator Taylor interpretation where Taylor's Warlord era characterization is flanderized so hard that she turns into her world's version of Doomguy where her response to literally everything is ultra violence, mutilation and torture and she can totally beat up anyone you guys hahah coin sock goes brrrrr you go brutalize those totally deserving victims queen. And then there's shy, stuttering, soft spoken "useless lesbian" Taylor which is not as common but still, fuckin straight men and the way they infantize gay women. Taylor is perhaps the most consistently inconsistent characterization I've seen in fandom, it's fucking wild Lisa Wilbourn: Has two fanon settings. Taylor's best friend who exists solely to give exposition and get the "Stop Coil" subplot rolling (occasional gay subtext will be added in a way that feels fetishy) Or, the evil bitchy blonde who is first target of the SI. I constantly wonder if the people who write the frankly masturbatory SI's are aware that we can tell they're still bitter about girls not dating them in highschool. Brian: basically does not exist in fic aside from the occasional joke cause racism and also because of how popular wlw ships are in Worm fandom. you deserve better dude Alec: has a few token appearances in wormfic fandom that usually have him as the comic relief alongside Aisha, which might actually be for the best considering he's a rapist and the Worm fandom's uhhhh tendencies. Moving on- Aisha: prankster girl that alt!Taylor will adopt as a younger sibling. hopefully is not part of the totally-not-a-harem considering she's even younger then the rest of these teens Bitch: Another girl to fall into alt!Taylor's definitely-not-a-harem, but with more butch tendencies. Basically has no personality in fanon outside of her dogs Parian: SHE DOESN'T HAVE A SHOP FFS also another member of Taylor's totally-not-a-harem Flechette: yeah it's a harem Sophia: holy shit you think Brian's bad? The racism in pretty much every fanon depiction of Sophia is off the charts. Hyper-violent, super edgy, "predator/prey" speech inbound, will get humilated/killed in some new, supposedly satisfying but actually just deeply uncomfortable way, probably throw in some E88 shit too just because Emma: again, do the writers know we can tell they're still malding over the fact that the pretty girls in highschool didn't date them? fanon emma is pretty much a cardboard cut out of whoever was mean to the author. something something bitches three Madison: in fanon has a C53 fetish, occasionally is also Browbeat. don't ask why Victoria: gets hit with the blonde stereotypes even harder then Lisa, "Collateral Damage Barbie" is one of the phrases that activates my flight or fight responses. she basically is an entirely different character in fanon. bubbly dumb blonde girl with a massive temper and well other sexist bullshiit Amy: I hate even touching this character with a ten foot pole but basically is hit with the "soft useless lesbian" trope hard enough to make her into a completely separate person from her canon self. whether or not this is a good thing is still up for debate Carol: in fanon, an evil bitch who exists solely to bully Amy Mark: who? The rest of New Wave: cannon fodder for Leviathan Danny Hebert: literally stale milk instead of a personality, will probably die before the fic is over but we won't care because the author did not care either Armsmaster: hahaha robotman go brrrr or is an arrogant self-aggrandizing shit, can't interact with people without Dragon helping him 24/7 Miss Militia: fanon bat'd into team mom,

Ace's hair colour is.... not information i am privy to. Sometimes I imagine him with brown hair, sometimes black hair, sometimes ginger. same with his eyes; grey, green, blue, brown, hazel, all across the board. the writing in the draft reflects that, lmao. his descriptions are a mess.

Jade used to be a GFS character!! I've said this before but I think it's just funky info. I realized she would fit better in a thriller, and also if her gender was transed, and she WIP-hopped and became Jade! (that was the second transing of hers btw. she started cis, then i went "Hm needs the transification beam" and she became transmasc but that wasn't right either and now she is a trans girl)

Thalia used to be a very minor character. Like, yeah, the story revolved around her death, but it used to be just a thriller, not a supernatural thriller, so her ghost wasn't in the equation at all. now, though, she's in the main cast like she deserves <3

Rafael is like... such a distinct vibe in my head. He fakes being pretentious for fun. he's MLM but even i don't know if he's bi, pan, or gay. his brain moves at 234648 speeds at once. he at one point suspects Ace is the killer but immediately banishes the thought because "Ace is an anxious dumbass, he wouldn't get away with that". he frequently plays candy crush until his phone dies. he might be rich. he knows bees don't have lungs

Thalia's thing is codes, puzzles, and logic games, and as a ghost she writes them for the others to help solve her murder (since for secret plot reasons she can't just say it), but has to spend like a very long time making sure they're simple enough because after the first code she realizes none of these people can crack a code at all

Lissa actually takes architecture extremely seriously and is extremely smart and knowledgeable about it, however she uses this knowledge to create multi-hour YT videos about the architecture in apocalyptic video games. because. idk autism

One of the most violent scenes I've ever written involves Ace, the killer, and the monster. (I shall say no more.)

Ace's parents.... I hate them so much. Ace loves them so much and also hates them so much too, he doesn't know, it's complicated, okay. he has an entire arc that's just figuring out "is this part of my personality, or is this part of the personality my parents forced me to build?" for like every trait he has

btvs season 7 episodes ranked

we did it gang!!! we’re crossin the finish line!!! it’s finally time to dig into season 7, about which i have uhhhh mixed feelings. it is Not The Best season of btvs; frankly, it is probably the second worst, even if i personally like it more than s4. still, s7 does have a few standout moments, and i think it deserves props for its appropriately apocalyptic feel. it’s really bleak, even after the reception season 6 got, and i gotta respect that the showrunners stuck with their guns. well anyway check below the cut for the list! love you! take care!

22. episode 6, “him”: good grief. where do i even start with this one. in this episode, magic makes a gay woman fall in love with a man, and that’s only one of the many dumb and uncomfortable things that happen in it.

21. episode 13, “the killer in me”: this episode has got some good stuff, and alyson hannigan’s acting is incredible as always, but the good pales in comparison to the bad. not only is the gimmick dumb, it hinges on the whole willow/kennedy plotline, which even i, a known liker of girls kissing girls, cannot bring myself to care about. also, amy outright admits to kennedy that she was behind the whole thing, and yet this is never addressed or followed up on???

20. episode 14, “first date”: who cares about any of this.

19. episode 15, “get it done”: kind of boring, with just a dash of btvs’s trademark weird uncomf race stuff to spice things up.

18. episode 19, “empty places”: so, like, i get that the narrative demands that this be buffy’s darkest hour, and that the way to do that is to make her friends turn their backs on her, but it just isn’t written in a way that makes sense. like, it’s understandable that everyone has grievances with buffy at this point, but i don’t see how no one at any point stands up and is like, “maybe we shouldn’t literally exile our strongest fighter when we’re up against a world-ending threat. maybe that isn’t the most strategic course of action to be taking”

17. episode 2, “beneath you”: something something dune joke. this is an ok episode; it’s ranked this low mainly because the spike stuff doesn’t really work for me. he plays his role so well that it rings a little false when we find out that he was just acting the entire time. it’s frustrating, too, because it feels like such an easy fix! but whatever. i can’t get into what i would’ve done differently this season or this list will be a million words long.

16. episode 20, “touched”: i watched this one and then immediately forgot what happens in it. aside from the fact that everyone fucks. oh, and spike stands up for buffy. that part is good.

15. episode 10, “bring on the night”: on the one hand, this episode manages to make the first feel like a genuinely threatening villain, and buffy’s speech at the end is a banger. on the other hand, why the hell does the turok-han not kill buffy after it knocks her out? what is the rationale there? it just feels like sloppy writing. at least invent some lame deus ex machina to frighten it off or whatever. sheesh

14. episode 1, “lessons”: this is a solid opener! opening on the new high school lends it a nice sense of narrative balance and effectively sets the season’s “full-circle” tone. and you know i love a haunting.

13. episode 21, “end of days”: ok, like, obviously everything about buffy’s Mythic Scythe is deeply stupid, but it’s never more stupid than here. not only is there an ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TOMB in the middle of a sunnydale cemetery, BUFFY DESECRATES IT. she doesn’t even fucking hesitate! she just kicks the door in! god i love this stupid show. anyway, if you disregard all that stuff, this is a strong penultimate episode that’s got a bunch of good moments. even if it does lose points for angel showing up. get out of here, angel!!! begone from me, vile man!!!

12. episode 22, “chosen”: this one feels kind of like a microcosm of the season as a whole—it’s a little rushed, a little haphazard. it feels like they didn’t build up to it enough and it suffers as a result. like, why does angel of all fucking people show up without preamble in the last episode and just hand over the mcguffin that ends up winning them the climactic battle?? stupid. still, even despite all that, the good parts of this episode are really good.

11. episode 9, “never leave me”: this is a fun one! the scene where xander and anya interrogate andrew is top notch.

10. episode 18, “dirty girls”: it’s kind of weird that they introduce caleb so late in the game—it feels like another symptom of s7’s kind of haphazard writing—but overall this episode is solid. nathan fillion is a lot of fun hamming it up as caleb, and faith’s conversation with spike is great.

9. episode 8, “sleeper”: god lmao I never realized that aimee mann was in this episode. wild.

8. episode 11, “showtime”: the gladiator fight between buffy and the turok-han is such a banger. i don’t understand how killing the turok-han allows her to rescue spike though. like where was the first even keeping him? and why was it even keeping him alive??? well, whatever. btw it’s fun how willow is apparently so powerful that people can now just telepathically contact her instead of the other way round. always tuned to the frequency. on call 24/7. if she was snoring in the other room you could just scream in your mind until it jolted her awake

7. episode 3, “same time, same place”: willow i love you. i kiss you. this episode is fun! it’s got a good gimmick that’s executed well. the demon is a little goofy, and alyson hannigan’s acting kind of suffers from the whole “lying on her back paralyzed” thing, but still.

6. episode 16, “storyteller”: this one is packed full of good gags, and the ending is nice and affecting. it’s cool to see andrew get some character development.

5. episode 4, “help”: poor cassie :( this one is lovely. the actual demon stuff is eminently forgettable but the mood of it has always stuck with me. buffy’s grim determination in the face of bleak odds really encapsulates the feel of season 7 to me.

4. episode 12, “potential”: this one is great. finally dawn is the focal character in a good episode. the conversation between xander and her at the end is lovely.

3. episode 17, “lies my parents told me”: this one is a standout mainly for the spike flashback stuff, but the rest of it is also good. wood’s murder room with all the crosses on the walls is a great image. it’s a shame that the wedge this one drives between giles and buffy is never quite resolved, though.

2. episode 5, “selfless”: poor anya :( poor xander and buffy too. buffy’s speech about standing alone as the slayer is really good. anya’s death wish hits hard. that’s really my only problem with it—they shoulda called it “death wish” instead.

1. episode 7, “conversations with dead people”: god i still have a hard time watching this one because it scared me so bad when i was a kid. btvs has never nailed the haunting stuff more than it does here. i like that they definitely knew how good this episode was too lmao it gets an artsy little title card and everything

Taka defending Mondo’s gang or the gang defending Taka

Heck yeah

Taka definitely has limited ability to defend the gang. It's not like he's going to be around during territory fights or anything. So I definitely see most of Taka "defending the gang" being "him defending Mondo from his father's scrutiny"

Takaaki doesn't care that his son's gay. Taka's already gone through so much in his life; he deserves anything that makes him happy. So Takaaki's issue is not that he's dating a boy, but WHAT boy he's dating. Mondo Owada, a literal gang leader...

Taka definitely has a list of all the great traits Mondo has, plus mentions the boy's future plans outside of the gang. He also has a 29 paged essay on the complex social impact of gangs, and how the removal of the Crazy Diamonds would most likely cause a power vacuum, making way for more dangerous groups.

The CD probably protects the streets to some degree. You won't have drug dealers selling to kids while they're around, plus they keep more aggressive gangs out.

Takaaki probably eventually warms up to the idea, but it's a process.

(Also, RIP to Takaaki's hair. Because there's no greater stress than realizing that your kind, innocent son has a type, and that type is delinquent.)

Now, quick tangent on the gang defending Taka. Why the HECK aren't there more fics about Taka getting caught up in gang activity??

I mean seriously, the angst potential is RIGHT THERE. Plus it makes so much sense. Mondo, this feared gang leader, just revealed a MASSIVE weakness by dating a freaking hall monitor. Hell, they don't even need to be dating at that point; just being seen around him would be enough.

Plus, even outside of that, there are reasons for enemy gangs not to like Taka. Not only did his grandfather's corruption likely affect some of the gang members, but his father is a freaking COP and has probably arrested them at least once. They have every reason to dislike Taka just based on his family, and that's BEFORE you realize how much of a rule-following, strict boy he is.

And also, Taka's no pushover, but he's probably really easy to kidnap. You KNOW he takes the same route home everyday and at the same time. Not hard to plan a kidnapping when you know where the target's going to be.

So yeah. Let Taka get kidnapped as leverage over Mondo. Let Takaaki have to team up with the Crazy Diamonds to save him. Let Mondo have to question if being in a relationship with Taka is worth risking Taka's safety.

Because Taka would absolutely want to continue their friendship; he's not going to let some cowards intimidate him into leaving his bro! But Mondo? He's worried about this happening again, about Taka getting hurt worse than he already has been.

Also! Think of the conflict Takaaki would be in. He knows Taka loves Mondo, but is that worth the risk of Taka getting hurt again? His desire to protect his son might lead him to thinking the safest option is that Taka never interact with Mondo again.

Seriously, this idea has so much potential. I have seen like 2 fics that even bring up the idea and it's a CRYING SHAME.

But outside of that specific situation, I can't see the gang needing to defend Taka much. When Taka does see the gang, it's usually in a pretty chill environment. Mondo doesn't take Taka on their rides or anything, because he knows Taka would just have a bad time.

But if there WERE a situation, you know the entire gang goes into "You are NOT laying a hand on Ishi" mode. Like yeah Taka can fight, he's ripped. But that doesn't mean they're going to be protective of him. Doesn't matter if he's the same age as their leader. Doesn't matter if some of the members are younger. Taka is Baby and must be protected at all costs.

Honestly? That's probably for the best. Taka would see a turf war and decide that calm negotiations are the best options. He wouldn't want to resort to violence...which is a good way to get punched in the face.
