Tips to Avoid Pickpockets and Thieves

from someone who is always travelling

I'm not gonna go over the usuals (just google), but I do have some esoteric approaches.

Research the specific pickpocketing (and related scams) in the city you're visiting. I like YouTube for this. Each city has its own little quirks of evil. I like to know what specifically I'm keeping an eye out for. (Like those damn clowns in Barcelona, shudder.)

I prefer sports gear over stuff designed for travel. I find it's more comfortable and stylish, less expensive (and easy to thrift for). So I don't wear a money belt but I do have one of these belts designed for runners which works the same way. Bonus it also makes for a pretty cool actual belt and you can use it to strap your luggage in a pinch.

I don't have any special all weather travel gear with tons of pockets and zippers etc... but I do like a golf jacket or vest. They usually have a nice inner pocket and fun other bells and whistles.

Strong large safety pins are great. You can use them to pin your wallet to you (if you don't do the chain thing), or a pouch (with spare cash and card, or your passport etc...) to inside your pants or undergarments. You can also use them to pin pockets closed (that don't have zippers) for extra safety.

By wallet I mean this kind of thing, more versatile, rfid and fits into the aforementioned belt.

I will literally sew inside pockets into things I like to wear for travel that don't have them already. Sometimes I will sew in a canvas pouch with a zipper top. 'Caus I fancy!

I travel with 2 credit cards, about $200 cash in the local currency (1 card and 1/2 cash sashed separately different places), and no ATM card.

I have a laminated 3x5 card of all the necessary info in case my phone or credit cards get stolen as well as emergency phone numbers. This info lives in my toiletry bag. I know, but no one thinks to look there and it stays back in my hotel most of the time.

Purse - if you insist on a purse go for something cheap, outrageous, hard sided, and with a loud closure like large snaps or a click. Outrageous because then everyone is looking at it all the time, so it's hard to snake it away, loud so you can hear it opening. Also I would say don't carry your wallet in that purse, but elsewhere on your person, say the belt or inside pocket? Purses are for, oh I don't know, lip gloss? Bandaids?

Backpack - ditto no wallet in it, but actually I always go for a crossbody instead of a backpack. Backpacks are the worst. I loathe them.

Crossbody - if you're waring a jacket wear the jacket over the strap (and bag, if you can) for goodness sake! I love a cape or a poncho in rain for these exact reasons. Yes I said cape, I'm a superhero.

Don't LOOK like a damn tourist, for the LOVE. I know everyone says this, but I mean - do the fashion research. I like to look up on YouTube those street camera "walking a shopping district" things for the destination city and time of year I'll be there. Then I actually pack planning to dress like a locals. Specifically color preferences, outerwear, and shoes. CLEAN shoes.

More on this: did you know people in Scandinavian countries rarely wear sunglasses? Mediterranean countries = no hats. Most Southeast Asian countries hate a backpack (yay!). I have no idea why, this just is.

Four signs you are a target tourist: 1. backpack, 2. fleece, 3 sensible shoes, 4. a baseball cap.

Don't keep your valuables in fancy pretty cases. I have a fancypants iPad, it travels in a manilla envelope. Why? No one wants to steal my damn mail. My laptop has the same thing, only made of faux leather so it only looks like an envelope from a distance, but still works for my needs.

I'm rarely out and about in danger zones with my work laptop. If I have to, I will wear one of those cheep slim not-backpacks (I KNOW) underneath my jacket with my computer flat against my back, you know the ones where the straps are string? It's very innocuous.

Stock up on cheap zipper pouches: I carry a lot of my other expensive tech in things like cheep makeup pouches (they're water resistant and often padded, ideal for tech). I'm a sucker for stupid looking but secretly well made baggies, easy pick-ups at a thrift store. And since they are miss-matched i always know which ones hold what.

Leo kurosagi analysis

this was requested but tumblr wont let me post to their ask so: Okay, Leo is selfish. I'm not gonna deny all the bad things people say about him, or even deny he is a bad person, but he is a GREAT set up for a character. I would like to say that Tokyo debunker is giving set up for growth from each character, Leo is just the most Jarring, for the fan base. full disclosure, I did not like Leo or even consider liking him until I saw the HATE on here, I'm not just trying to be quirky by liking the most disliked character either. I tend to just want to see the good in what most people dislike. I like kpop and I tend to bias the most criticized or least biased members of a group, because I think it's an amazing feeling to give love... Although I understand it's cathartic to hate too, and that's probably why the Leo hate is so strong. I also still don't LIKE Leo, but I really do want to explore his character and I probably will make more posts as we see him more and as I experience him more myself. The Leo cu*king tho, is maybe my least favorite "trope" in TBD fanfic rn... but I don't k*nkshame y'all :*

I also would like to say Sho is his friend, not his victim or Rapunzel. There is some value to Leo in Sho's eyes and I think we shouldn't degrade that because we see that if Sho doesn't like someone he will not engage i.e Ren. Sho is a sweet character and I think he might be friends with Leo because he wants to see the best in him or knows his more repulsive behaviors are a defense mechanism or explained by other reasons we the MC are yet to see. Why I think that is even tho the weird blob guys in the mystery diner suck at making food he still wants to see the best in them, and that very scenario could be a cheeky analogy from the writers themselves, about Sho and Leo. Obviously Leo could be blackmailing Sho, I know that is a commonly held belief, but I do have some perspectives that could debunk that thought. Leo doesn't Garner blackmail on his peers. I think Leo is nosy, and invasive, but he is also incredibly capable, implied by his contributions to the vagastrom group case. If he wanted to figure out who Alan killed he could with his hacking prowess, but instead he asks Mido himself. In invasive ways yes, but he could just have found the information himself, whether by hacking or asking the countless witnesses of the clash. Rather he asks Mido face to face, and, correct me if I'm wrong we can't say he wouldn't have taken no for an answer because Mido just gets mad at his antics and never gives him a straight up no. Again I could be wrong so let me know if Alan does give him a straight no. It's been a while since chapter two for me.

Right now I want to explore some possibilities for his character given the information we have about him ATM. I mentioned above the fact his little nasty, mean, degrading comments could be a defense moreso that he wants people to try and push past that to see if they're viable as his friends. Especially because he is micro-influencer he might be protective of himself because of that. As well as being a chronic liar online he may want to know if he can trust you not to expose him online. I think exploring his past would be amazing because even his stigma makes him seem like an overly cautious person, as well as invasive. Cautious? I feel like its cut and dry that wanting to hear what people say when you aren't around could hint to him being quite anxious about what people think about him. like idk I also feel like the jealousy we see towards Sho might also be more about people finding Sho more approachable. I think because Leo wants to be more involved with people in power he might have not been trying to scare Subaru away because "Sho is mine >:(" and actually could have been jealous that Subaru noticed Sho first and not him. Still awful right? but also like I said I don't see Leo as enjoyable but more so a lot of room for redemption, or explanation. Sympathy or empathy might be something we feel for him a lot if he is properly explored.

Obvs these are just possibilities right :) I actually find him very cute and I like his catty behavior, especially because in comparison to other nasty ghouls he is like a kitten hissing at you, harmless. Like dude Taiga shot me, and you're just a nasty baby, I smell your fear on the inside, you just want to be loved like everyone else. He's a true tsundere and not that "I swear I don't like you!!" shit and I appreciate that. I hope nobody misconstrues this as defense of his toxicity more-so that the point of tokyo debunkers focus seems to be everyone is demonizing these teens who seriously are just teens, and sometimes teenagers are catty are toxic, but they're still learning. Especially when the adults suck too... if not more because they are adults. AND LEO IS HATED FOR BEING STINKY AND MEAN BUT TAIGA AND ROMEO ARE LIKED BUT SO MUCH MORE MORALLY DECREPIT... so idk that especially irks me. I still would like to know what people think and if you are also excited to see the exploration of the ghouls especially Leo, and what theories you may have on him yourself.

Bad Batch -- Actually Probably Not Spoilers?

But Just In Case:

Like, for plot reasons, I see why they couldn't do it. But my biggest (and possibly the funniest) peeve I have with Bad Batch is this: Canonically, Tech is some kind of master hacker. Can forge chain codes after learning about them five seconds ago. Hacks battle droids -- presumably, you know, SECURED in some way -- on the regular. Masked a ship's signature or whatever. Calculates percentages of plans' successes on the fly while hanging upside down from a screechy flying reptile. Has zero fear (except when Omega is driving the Marauder or someone is doing the Wikipedia entry who isn't him) ("it's not affecting life support. We're fine"; riot racing; everything he's ever done). The moral heart of the Batch pre-Omega ("the systematic termination of the Jedi was a big one for me"; "I understand. I do not agree with you"; "of course we are a family"; "we have not always seen eye to eye with Crosshair but he is our brother and we do not leave our own behind"; but has no issue being pragmatic when it's called for (see: Cid, riot racing again, missions for Rex, interruptions thereof, etc.). Seriously. Wack job of a man. Crazy. Strict moral code arranged almost solely around his family that absolutely nobody sees coming and that, specifically, does NOT preclude massive destruction, property damage, and lethal measures. Ridiculous man. Homeschooled. Genetic Mandalorian. COMPETENT. (Usually.) Bona fide, literal, genetically-engineered test tube genius who is also biologically nine years old. Has no concept whatsoever of overkill. Point being -- he is EXACTLY the kind of person I would expect, once it sunk in that: 1. They are no longer Kaminoan/Republic property 2. They are, in fact, on the run with fam + new baby and - cranky but nonetheless beloved sniper bro who picked a terrible time to be stupid And 3. that "money" is now a thing they must Account For.... Give him two days to study finances, economy, and the various mafia; send him on a weekend trip to Nal Hutta to observe gangs, and hey presto -- the Hutts? overthrown in a year. Black Sun? Tech would have foreclosed on the Palace; the Death Star would have fallen prey to insurance fraud; Omega would have grown up with more gowns than Padme. The Banking Clan bows to their new and, uh, eccentric overlords. Wrecker has thirteen new Z-6 cannons. Echo has thirteen natborn employees and is thoroughly enjoying himself. Hunter took an actual shower (still didn't get a new bandana). The Empire is turning over the empty coffers and shaking them out, wondering if they have rats. Mas Amedda is standing on street corners with an upturned hat. Crosshair is happily occupied with suing the Kaminoans for emotional damages. The end

Prison revolt at the Morton prison - part 1

Morton is a prison in the Nevada desert. In the prison system of the Federal Republic of Dystopia it's on grade 5 of the 7 grade security scheme - ranking from grade 1 "Low security" to grade 7 "Super Max security". In 2098 a huge prison revolt happened and lasted for 3 weeks with several guards wounded and 3 guards dead. The revolt was planned, organized and started by the "Honourable Council of the Ten". This self-styled council saw themself as leaders of the inmates. This council was part of a trial of inmate self-administration and was introduced in some pilot prisons of grade 1 to 5 prisons. Within the legislation it was called "Help council" and was planned to be an elected body of 10 inmates. It quickly switched to be an instrument of criminals to control other inmates and use ressources to continue criminal activities. In most prisons it was renamed by the inmates - inofficially - and never elected freely. It was abolished after the Morton prison revolt.

All participants of this riot will be charged - all 904 inmates of the cellblocks that participated in the riots are counted as participants - under the Prison Mutiny Law (PML) that sets draconic measures.

In this first part we look at the 10 members of the former council who were the ringleaders. Under the PML the ringleaders are charged for the murders committed in a revolt or mutiny regardless wether they did the murder(s) or someone else.

They were split into 5 groups and sent to different places in the Federal Republic of Dystopia to reduce their influence.

Giorgio (28, left) and Vittorio (30, right) Marconi are brothers and grew up in a crime family. Their father, uncle and the two brothers were accused several times for drug trafficking but acquitted each time. They were sentenced two years ago for the brutal beating of two police officers. They were sentenced to 31 years prison sentence each. Three months before the revolt, new evidences emerged about their connections to drug trafficking, human trafficking and murder of two witnesses in a case against their father. They saw the revolt as their last opportunity to be in freedom. It was quite sure that the new evidence would send them right into a life sentence in a grade 7 prison, most likely in solitary confinement.

Their new sentence is: 5 life sentences, 90 years, 12 strokes of the cane after this trial and every second year 10 strokes of the cane until they turn 60. They'll spend the rest of their lives shackled in solitary confinement in a grade 7 prison.

Eric Mosley (24, left) and Damian Hintz (23, right) are both bisexual and fell in love in prison. They were molested and tortured by homophobic guards after one guard saw them having sex and instigated his colleagues to mistreat the couple. They killed that guard while the revolt was running. Mosley was at Morton for six months when the revolt broke out. He was sentenced to 9 years for an armed robbery with possibility of parole after 7 years. Damian Hintz was sentenced to 13 years of prison for manipulating ATMs, gambling machines and hacking into computers. He was a mastermind and made for his bosses more than 11 million $. They promised him 10%. He never saw a penny. He was offered to snitch his bosses to see his sentence reduced to 3 years under house arrest but he refused as the bosses threatened his wife, his parents and his young sister. He was 21 as he was arrested.

Mosley and Hintz got three life sentences in addition to their former sentences. They'll spend the rest of their lives shackled in a double cell in a grade 7 prison. They'll get 8 strokes of the cane each after the trial and 4 strokes every second year until they turn 60.

In the aftermath of their trial 7 former guards of the Morton prison will be tried for molesting and torturing inmates.

Ciro Vallanzasca (34, left) and Marvin Colb (25, right) will be the two lucky guys of the ringleaders. Ciro is the nephew of a senator of the Federal Republic of Dystopia and Marvin is his assistant. Ciro had a long criminal career but avoided prison until he turned 32. He was sentenced to 7 years for money laundering. He was transferred to Morton prison after he beat his cellmate on his second day after his sentence. Marvin Colb was sentenced 5 years ago for drugging other people - men and women - and selling their explicit pictures on porn sites or blackmailing them. He was nearly killed by one of his victims what led to his arrest and trial. He turned assistant of Ciro Vallanzasca a short time after they became cellmates. The remainder of his prison term was just 1 year. Both guys were against the revolt and expelled for that from the council a few days before the revolt. At the court they told everything about the council decisions and about the plannings. At the end they were acquitted from the murders of the three guards but had to face another harsh punishment for prison mutinies.

They were sentenced each to 5 additional years for enabling conspiracy and mutiny (instead of telling the guards beforehand). In addition they'll receive 5 strokes of cane each and additional 4 strokes six months before their planned release. They'll get a mandatory vasectomy as ringleaders of mutinies as these people are barred from reproducing (along with some other crimes). It will be a so-called "ultra vasectomy" removing large parts of the vas deferens to make a reversal operation impossible. They'll spend the next five years shackled in a grade 7 prison together in one cell. After these five years they go into a grade 4 prison where a cousin of the Marconis cut the word "traitor" into their faces.

Timothey "Red Timmy" Claus (30, left) and Marlon Estrada (32, right) are communist activist who planned a terrorist attack on an economic meeting three years ago. That plan was foiled but they were sentenced to 60 years in prison each. At the beginning of the revolt they beat two guards nearly to death.

They got an additional sentence of four life sentences, 12 strokes of the cane after the trial and 10 strokes each year until they turn 60. They'll spend the rest of their lives shackled in total solitary confinement of a grade 7 prison. These two convinced the other members of the council to start the revolt. They planned a huge prison break out and were in hope that all prisoner support their communist ideas. Claus and Estrada have three weapon arsenals that remained undiscovered and they wanted to infiltrate army posts with their fellow inmates. Claus styled himself as general secretary of the council and Estrada styled himself as president of the council despite these titles didn't exist. On the way to the prison Claus and Estrada tried to kill a guard in the prisoner transport van in the hope to get killed to avoid their life sentences. But that didn't work. Both tried to go on hunger strikes but were force fed and started eating after few days of force feeding. They lived until their 70s in prison.

Steve Lee (19, left) and Kevin Calvert (25, right) are the last two of the ringleaders to be sentenced. Steve Lee split from his religious family at the age of 15 and began his short criminal career. He sold drugs and convinced friends to take drugs while being abstinent. He loved to make videos of people who got the drugs from him. At the age of 16 he stole a car as cops chased him. With that car he injured two guys. Despite his criminal behavuiour he stopped and tried to help the two injured. So he was arrested. He was sentenced for drug selling, for the car theft and for the accident. His sentence was 15 years in prison with possible parole after 12 years. Because of his calculating nature he was sentenced as an adult and transferred immediately to the adult prison. He gained huge respect in prison quickly and forced another inmate to retire from his post in the council.

Kevin Calvert worked together with two cops to set up a trap for a group of four pedophiles. He killed all four by torturing them to death. He was sentenced to life in prison. He was called up into the council on the first day at Morton prison.

Both guys were sentenced to additional three life sentences and 7 strokes of the cane after sentence and 4 strokes every year until they turn 60. They were set to spend the rest of their lives shackled in solitary confinement in a grade 7 prison. But Steve Lee was offered to take part in a "harvesting program". This was set up to get blood donations. Inmates in this program get special food and a fitness program. This treatment makes it possible to recreate blood quicker - and donate more often. Inmates of the harvesting program are released at the age of 35 into a 5 year probation period. After 4 years of solitary confinement Kevin Calvert was sent to a grade 3 prison. At the age of 35 he got sterilized and pardoned next day. He lived a good life later as he got donations from several groups fighting pedophilia.

I gotta know: In your Star Wars AU, what are your thoughts on what forms of Force abilities each character would favor/specialize in?

Also is it just for the villains or are some of heroes included as well?

STAR WARS AU MY BELOVED. As I was trying to answer this ask, I ended up finishing the second chapter of my fic--which I hadn't even looked at in MONTHS--so thank you so much for getting the au gears turning!!

I'm going to put this under a read more because it is. A lot.

SO for context, I don't really have any plans atm to write A Big Multichapter Fic for this au--instead, I've been working on shorter fics in a series & just writing whichever parts of the story I feel like writing. So far the outline for the series consists of three fics:

1. some who dream of dawn, the completed(!!) Bakugou fic 2. end of an age, the in-progress Mic fic, which is Very Grim and therefore slow going 😭 3. the untitled Aizawa fic (the titles are taken from some of my favorite Star Wars quotes, but nothing has clicked for this one yet 🤔)

That being said, I've tried to be vague about the roles of characters who don't feature heavily in any of these fics, bc I want to be able to write something for them later should inspiration strike, and I don't want to be restricted by a throwaway line in a fic that wasn't even about them. In theory, heroes are Jedi and villains are Sith, Inquisitors, etc, but if I don't need to name someone, I try not to. Just in case. For the same reason, I've mostly been considering specific Force abilities as I need them/as I think benefits the story, which means I have fully Made Things Up when I felt it made for an interesting plotline. Mic is the best example of this, and also I Love Him, so I'll start with him!!

Yamada--Since I started with the idea that heroes = Jedi, he was one of the first characters I did any brainstorming about for the au. I actually toyed around with the idea of him being a Jedi shadow before I settled on Aizawa for Plot Reasons. ANYWHO, after Yamada was injured on a mission, he was reassigned to the Archives on Coruscant for the duration of his recovery. But I needed a reason to keep him there, so I decided that he has a talent for creating Force seals--particularly for holocrons. In canon, basically any skilled Force user can open a holocron, but I thought it would be kind of cool if there was a way to add an extra layer of security to the most important ones. Force seals are very tricky to make and very tricky to make well, but since Yamada is very good at it, he ended up getting stuck in the Archives tending to the holocrons. The bright side is that he and Aizawa got to see each other more often when Aizawa was brought back to the Temple to teach.

Aizawa--For obvious reasons, I've entertained the idea of Aizawa being very good at any kind of Force cleansing/negating, be that of objects (such as kyber crystals) or the abilities of other Force users. It's a very useful skill for a shadow to have.

Shinsou--If I ever write an au and Shinsou is not a central character, that's because my ao3 has been hacked and it's not me writing that au. That's my boy and He's A Main Character To Me. For obvious reasons again, Shinsou has a talent for the good old fashioned Jedi mind trick, but he also has a notable and very intuitive aptitude for Force immersion. That is, he's good at hiding--himself, his feelings, and his Force signature. This is relevant for Plot Reasons.

Yagi--All Might my BELOVED. A hero among the Jedi on par with Anakin 'The Hero with No Fear' Skywalker in SW canon, but without all the 'falling to the Dark Side.' He's notably Very Strong with the Force (go figure lol).

Midoriya--PSYCHOMETRY. I think Midoriya has a lot of potential Force abilities in this au (like, insight/Force sensing could serve as a replacement for Danger Sense, etc), but I always like to see if I can squeeze some kind of vague reference to the vestiges into any given au (like the psychic au!!) At first I was trying to do something with Force ghosts, but then I thought WAIT. Psychometry just feels like it fits. The whole 'seeing the past by touching something' is reminiscent of both the 'literally talking to past lives' AND his very impressive research skills & hero history knowledge in MHA canon. Idk I just think it's neat.

Bakugou--Turning Bakugou into a Jedi was... challenging. For obvious reasons. But one of the things I was Very Sure about from the start was that I wanted him to be powerful in all the ways a warrior should be powerful (think Force leaps and Force blasts and Force deflection, etc) but he Struggles with the subtler aspects of his Jedi training. He's not especially good at meditating, mind tricks, or mental links with other living beings, but before Order 66, he was at least passable at those things if only bc he worked like crazy at them. Just like. Imagine Bakugou aggressively meditating in an attempt to get better at it. That was him as a padawan.

AFO--AFO CAN SENSE SHATTERPOINTS. That's how he comes up with all of his Schemes. I hate that guy but I do love a good shatterpoint.

Dabi--So there's actually a scene in Star Wars Rebels (my beloved) where Sidious uses blue Force fire, so like. Yes. He can also use this ability as a kind of? Rope? (Sidious uses it to try to pull Ezra into a portal. What in the Forest Training Camp arc.) He is ALSO pretty good at Force immersion, which helps him hide his slow slide toward the Dark Side. Lots of rhyming in that sentence.

I thiiink that covers the majority of the characters whose Force abilities I have pretty much worked out. Obv there are others present in the au, but like I mentioned, I've been trying to keep the specifics a little vague in case I come up with something I want to include in a fic later on!!

you won't get disappointed in kuro games when it comes to their fanservice lol their other game, punishing gray raven is basically like a hack & slash game with a side of dating sim lmao, the pining and yearning and looooots of angst. the plot is good too and very dark.

though the downside is there are few men, they only release one male character a year and im hoping they won't do it to wuwa :")

the downside just might be too harsh for me lol. ofc I don't only play for the characters; but to go into more detail, zzz is a good example. zenless zone zero has a rly good world built, and the story telling is v well done, it is just so enjoyable and light and easy and... there wasn't a single new man/masc character on banner since release (until this one with the 4 star Seth Lowell). I honestly had to bench zzz and wuwa (I did jump into wuwa the other day to check up on stuff), cos playing 4 gacha games as a min-maxer isn't something I could afford timewise. for the case of zzz, where the MAJORITY of the game is combat and I basically have low choices with masc characters, it made it less enjoyable for me ngl. I get it, fem characters make them money, and sadly the characters themselves also suffer for it. how many times are they made shallow, without depth or any good characteristics and history, just cos it is enough to slap abnormal bodily autonomy to attract people who only care about the physicality? (I'm talking about gacha games in general, & I'm not saying that this is every fem character).

whereas when it is about masc characters they make more of an effort. (patriarchy keeps hurting the world even when the games have more fem than masc) and when they do make fem characters without the "assets" they make them a foggy age (basically many ppl assume the character is a minor), and they develop a much better story surrounding them. ex., Huohuo (hsr), Furina, Hutao (gi).

my point being around zzz/wuwa; I may come to play the game for the world and the story and the lore (I'm huge on world exploration and the story) but once I complete everything and there's a whole month before the next update, I'm left with the characters I got, and building them. and when it lacks characters that appeal to me and my preferences it sucks asf and I'll keep playing, but to have low to no (hi3) options of masc characters- it does affect my motivation to continue playing it.

regarding wuwa they have really good and diverse masc characters (genshin could make more men like that), moreover in comparison to zzz, they (wuwa) actually release new masc characters. I can say I'm quite satisfied, as a Jiyan/Calcharo main (Xiangli Yao has my attention atm he's a pretty one+clever) tho I wonder when we will meet Calcharo in game (did I miss something help?).

finished catching up to project jekyll & hyde. all i’ve gotta say is, imagine a bystander witnessing knives and doc fighting, then woo and yeo take over, then they’re suddenly hugging it out. i think i would freak if i saw that irl lmao. also, yn is too smarttt. i love how she caught on red being in control of hj’s body at that time. she knows them too well it seems, and im also happy she’s still on high alert afterwards; so to say, she’s not really doubting herself. i am scared though for whatever doc has planned. i can see he got a few other of the members’ alters to join him, or so i think. i get the strange feeling that red is helping doc by observing the doctor’s notes more than being “fascinated.” anywho, cant wait for more chapters!

i can't talk about other people but for me, i feel IMMENSE guilt when i can't commit time or fall off schedule in updates just bc i can't handle my life. and the guilt often makes it hard for me to come back bc in the back of my mind it's always like "people forgot about you, it doesn't matter if you return" and i'm so glad you and the others proved me wrong EVERY SINGLE TIME

i saw creators leaving tumblr and they blame it on toxic community and pressure from rude readers and i totally get where they came from so i'm glad that's not the case for me. if you knew me from the beginning, you know i've been through my fair share of community drama so i stay away from that because i don't want the negativity to affect my craft. writing is me putting my inner self for everyone to see and i love sharing it with you guys so truly, i'm glad of the support and attention you guys have given me 🫶🫶

and ngl i don't mind you guys telling me you guys can't wait for the next update bc it gives me motivation to return and like actually come back here to update no matter what. what i don't appreciate is anons just sending me "when's the next update for ××?" like girl do we know each other ?? i hate it when my mom just drop a question like that without preface and without considering my state, what makes you think i'd appreciate it coming from a ghost ???

Today in Lines I Loved Writing

From the end of the first chapter of Stardust:

“How was it?” Skeets asked, after Booster landed on the balcony and let himself back into the fifth story room in the pretty-okay DC hotel.

He’d flown without his forcefield activated because he wanted the cold air on his face; after that, coming back into a warm room was almost too much.  He pulled the curtains closed, though he left Skeets a crack to ‘look’ through, and then started peeling out of his uniform, trying to figure out how to answer that.

Skeets knew his whole sordid history -- who else did Booster have to talk to? -- and it was still curiously hard to tell the ‘bot about the rejection he just got.  He opened his mouth three or four times to start, then just-- couldn’t.

It was weird.  Equal parts newly humiliating and familiar.  He hadn’t seen it coming until he was already under the gun, but then once he was, it was like the worst case of deja vu.  And it wasn’t the first time that had happened since landing in this time.  He’d be trying to do something -- chase a criminal, save people from a burning building, the usual hero fare -- and he’d get the feeling he’d done it a thousand times before.  Even though he’d only been in this game for not quite five months.

The whole thing was starting to make him feel like he was going crazy.

“Sir?” Skeets prompted again, pulling him back to the moment, half undressed.

“I don’t know how to answer that,” Booster said, looking at the marker on the back of his hand. The bright spot in all of that: Laughing with Ted.  Trying to weigh it now felt all kinds of wrong, because even the gut-turning shame of the League’s rejection (and the hows) seemed somehow less important, and that just didn’t make any sense.

He’d gone there looking for membership or networking, not friendship, even if he was lonely.  Instead of the first two, maybe he’d gotten the last.

“I-- uh--”  He shook out of it and finished getting out of uniform, leaving it in a heap on the chair, then headed for the bathroom.  “They didn’t want me.  They know about us hacking ATMs.  And, um, what I do for a living currently.  I don’t know how I feel about it.”

Aside bad, anyway.  And tired.  And still pretty lonely.  But weirdly grateful for the phone number and name written on his skin in a marker that’d last for a few days, too.  It was all a mess.

Skeets gave that little hum of his like he was thinking, but Booster didn’t wait to hear what the ‘bot might have had to say before firing up the shower and getting in; he turned it up hot as it would go and scrubbed himself clean, lingering on it long enough to feel a little more human again, then blow-dried his hair and brushed his teeth before flopping on the bed in some cheap Walmart PJ pants and a loose t-shirt.

He wasn’t there too long, staring at the ceiling, before Skeets hovered over and then slowly settled down in the crook of his arm.

It had happened a handful of times now, though usually Skeets only did that on the really rough nights where all Booster wanted to do was crawl into some dark hole and have someone kick enough dirt over him to constitute a mercy-killing.  He wasn’t sure this night qualified, because while he was in the hole, he wasn’t in any great rush to be buried there, but he still tucked the ‘bot in close to his side, fin under flank, and let the proximity chase some of the heartache away.

After a bit, after the ‘bot’s cool metal skin had warmed where they were in contact, Booster reached over and pulled his phone off of the night stand.  He put Ted’s name and number in his contacts -- now four whole numbers deep! -- then on a whim held the phone up and smiled and took a selfie before sending it over so that Ted would have his number in turn.

The answer back was quick: Oh, I see something shiny and pretty!  Are you sleeping with one of your football trophies?

There was a split second there where, in some other lifetime, Booster would have started preening on the assumption that he was the shiny, pretty thing being complimented.  Or made a joke about the lack of eroticism contained in a football trophy.  In this one, though, he looked down at Skeets tucked against his side and found himself chuckling before texting back, If he knew you called him a football trophy, he’d be offended.  Then he added, And if he knew you called him pretty, he’d be insufferable.

He??????  Is that a robot????  And you should send another selfie and do duck face this time.

Booster blinked.  “Skeets-- what’s a duck face?”

“An exaggerated pout used in selfies, where the person taking the selfie pushes their lips outward, thereby unwittingly imitating the bill of a duck,” Skeets answered, with his usual speed and accuracy, because he could surf the internet faster than any human could think. “It’s largely fallen out of fashion, but is still considered a humorous meme.”

“Huh.”  Booster mentally shrugged to himself, then took another one, this time pouting.

And the robot?  You have to tell me about the robot!

Then: aNYWAY, that’s not duck face, that’s just sultry.  Now this is duck face.

It took several seconds for the picture to load, but then Ted’s face popped up, unmasked, making the most-- ridiculous kind of expression at the camera, lips and chin jutted out, eyes half-lidded.  Behind him was some elaborate-looking instrument panel.  It was such a goofy expression that you couldn’t help but laugh at it.

Booster thought about firing something back about blackmail.  Or maybe about Ted needing to practice his flirting, though that had some dangerous implications.  But after he got done snickering at Ted’s goofy look, he just ended up writing, His name is Skeets.  And yeah, he’s a robot.  And my friend.

That is SO COOL.  When do I get to meet him?

There was that issue again; what there existed of a future.  What there didn’t.  Despite being from several centuries into it, Booster still couldn’t see past the next day, the next meal, the next shift, the next patrol, the next motel room.  Trying to stretch whatever he could earn long enough that he didn’t have to live like this anymore.

In all of that it seemed pointless, trying to plan for a when he couldn’t even imagine.

So-- he didn’t answer that.  He just texted back, Night, Ted, and muted the phone and set it back on the nightstand.  “Wake me up when we have to fly back to New York?” he asked, like he wasn’t going to wake himself up however many times, as he got halfway under the covers and even managed to do so without letting the ‘bot go.

“You might do better to avoid going in tonight, Michael.  But I will.”

If he could have afforded to avoid it, he might have.  But since he couldn’t, he just rolled to his side and cuddled Skeets against his chest and tried to sleep.

Why I loved writing them:

It's been like-- fifteen years since the last time I wrote in the DCU. A lot of the stuff I loved about these characters back then remains the same, but I'm a hell of a lot older and more experienced in general life than I was back then.

So, it was especially interesting tackling Booster in this context, at this age, on the other side of two universal resets he can't remember. Particularly because he can't remember them, but alllllll those years he originally survived (and all that shit he went through during them, which was a LOT) are still influencing him on a subconscious level and slowly but surely wearing away at his mental stability. And like, Booster's a resilient guy and he has some stuff going for him in this timeline he didn't originally (like a Ted who doesn't knee-jerk no-homo on reflex, like a Skeets who is hella protective more openly, eventually even a variation of the JLI as teammates), so it's a slow process, but it's a thing that's happening.

And you can kinda see it here. There're a few scenes in his first solo book where you really did get to see this twenty-year-old guy being every bit as lonely and lost as he would be, though he covers it up quickly with bravado and sometimes reckless dumbassery.

But in this timeline, after everything, he is-- just twenty. By not even three weeks, at this point. He's been alone absent Skeets since August. He's a lot less proud than his original incarnation, a lot more aware of how isolated and lonely he is. He doesn't have the glitz and glamor of the mid-eighties to leverage and exploit, he's just this collage-aged kid who landed hundreds of years out of context with almost nothing, aside a 'bot and a costume and a genuinely brave heart. He doesn't even have his ill-gotten credit card because it woulda been expired.

So, I loved exploring what kind of person he is in this go-round when he's got his shields down, and that particular scene above does an especially good job. He's painfully aware of being rejected. He's touched as hell that Ted reached out. He's a guy who grew up in, as Dara put it, grinding poverty and therefore probably hasn't been out of some form of survival mode since he was too young to understand why he needed to be in it in the first place. He's been built up, then torn down; exalted and exploited both.

And he's still young enough to cuddle his 'bot like a stuffed animal. And he's also got a hell of a lot of years he can't remember living and feels far more tired than anyone his age should, which comes across keenly in this scene.

Plus, I had a ton of fun writing him and Ted texting, because even with this scene being heavy, Booster asking Skeets what a duck-face was made me happy. (As well as Ted calling him sultry.)

Assorted Selfship Lore!!

Normally, I post the "main" selfship lore in posts of their own with a commissioned work, but since that well is a lil slow atm, I just gonna ramble on some lore nuggets I have for current f/os I have. Nothin in depth, but the general ideas.

Purah, as kinda my secondary main f/o, has a good bit. We actually knew each other before the events of BotW, though our relationship was a lot different back then. I was a doctor who worked under the crown, so we met up quite frequently. We were going strong for a few years, with plans to marry, until the Calamity happened. I was studying cryogenic preservation up in Hebra when it happened, and the ensuing chaos led to myself being frozen in suspended animation for nearly a century! Purah has bigger fish to fry and kinda lost her memory a bit when she went baby mode, so I wouldn't be found til about a year after Link defeated Ganon and search parties began to be sent out, when I was found frozen in the ice. Purah kinda laser focused on me for a good while, staying by me day in and day out til I fully thawed, and of course oversaw my rehabilitation. She felt a bit awful for the whole thing, but I assured her it was not her fault, and she did the best she could. What mattered most was that were were together again ❤️

I actually have a story with Odessa that takes place after her episode of the show. For backing, I was a elastic powered thief who traveled the world stealing what I wanted. I found out about Odessa during my time in New York, and fell for her. She initially just humored my advances, but she soon fell to my villainess charms and returned the feelings. After I broke her out, she became committed to joining me in robbing the world of whatever we wanted. I even helped rehabilitate her public image, so we could be out in public together yet again eheheh >:]

With Perona, I feel we met up during the two-year time skip. Probably one time when she left the island Zoro and Mihawk were at and explored the surrounding area. She found me alone, silently working on clothes of several varieties thanks to my Cloth-Cloth Fruit abilities. We had a rocky meeting, but things went on an upswing when I made her some new outfits. We got talking, bonding over our similar styles, and then one thing led to another, and we ended up dating :] I visited her and the others frequently, though neither Zoro nor Mihawk were the most...welcoming. I did at least supply Zoro with his new garb before he went off to Sabaody, and did tag along with Perona when she made sure he got there. We stick pretty close to one another, mainly cause, ya know, we're that kinda couple, heh 🩷

For Sombra, we met as Talon agents. Similar vibes, though I was more focused on "physical" hacking, so to speak. Started as a bit of a flirty rivalry that turned to actual flirting that turned to actual dating. We never stop being bad, but we do lay low several years down the line cause, wuh-o, she ended up pregnant with my kid! No idea how that happened...👀

D. Va is a similar case! Freelance agent who encountered her on a few missions. Rivalry started cause I called into question her skills, and that rivalry eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. We're very open about it too, bothers everyone on the team lol.

Roz I'm kinda here and there about. It's def a kinda AU from the main film, with like anthro versions of the animal cast, cause ya know I def want Brightbill and Fink there. Question is do I wanna be anthro? Or just human? Prolly be a raccoon, cause that's my Mobian-sona. Then again, Roz has a history with raccoons, heh. Regardless, I am very much a robot kisser and I love being co-parents with her :]

Sybil is fun cause, I'm casting myself as a similar "dream warrior", known as The Oni. Cowl, Blue Spirit-esque mask, large ogre-like mace. Tanuki-Possum kinda creature. We're both busy people, but when we meet up, we make it count. We haven't committed to anything, but we are life partners, so there's that!

These next three, I think I made a post earlier about em, or at least the general idea. So, with Toy Chica, I'm introduced as like the new addition to the Fazbear cast, specifically as Chica's partner. She's a bit unsure about the whole deal, but when I turn out to be a lovable guy, genuinely kind, and a good cook, we form a genuine bond which slowly grows to be romantic. Might AU this a bit where like, they're still animatronics but doing that is there "job"? I dunno, sorting the deets.

Roxy is similar. Same fictional in-universe character, now reintroduced in the Pizza-plex era as Roxy's race partner for the double go-kart track. We hit it off incredibly well, and kinda just go with dating from the get go. Helps I'm super supportive of her being the best :]

Rambley is, again, much the same. My character was introduced to be his close friend—if Rambley is Mickey, think me as Goofy, but designed to be as Minnie. Our relationship is very close, so close that over time, when it came time to introduce a proper love interest for Rambley, they just decided to use me because people already assumed we were meant to be a couple. And so we became canon :]

Other bits!:

I was with Mariah when she worked with DIO, and helped fished her out after her battle with Joseph and Avdol. We retired after that.

I was probably some misc god or being in Viridi's pantheon when I met Phosphora.

As the Ultimate Butler, I was placed to work alongside Kirumi. Our relationship started as a tense bout of one-ups-man-ship that eventually boiled over to romantic desire.

So, normally when you deposit a check at an ATM, it doesn't actually show up in your account until the bank has processed the deposit: it may show as a "pending" transaction, but your available balance doesn't go up.

Chase, for whatever reason, briefly stopped doing that, and instead of the transaction appearing as pending, it immediately went to your balance. Which is all fine and helpful if it was a real check, and in rare cases of someone making a mistake--like depositing an empty envelope or whatever--when the deposit was actually processed, it would come up as an error and be corrected.

So somebody noticed this, and realized that if they wrote a check to themselves, and then deposited that check in their checking account (yes, the same checking account that the check was drawn on), their account balance would immediately go up by whatever amount they had filled in on the check.

The ATM would then allow them to make purchases and/or cash withdrawals based on that balance.

So that's how they committed check fraud.

The short answer to "why did they think it would be infinite money" is "because they are very stupid."

The longer answer is that, if you do this and you do actually have the money to cover the check that you wrote to yourself, it's possible that no alarm bells would be set off: the bank computer would go, "Hm, next task, take $500 out of Account # 123456 and put it in Account # 123456. Okay!" And then your account would show a deposit of $500, a cleared check for $500, and a cash withdrawal of $500.

Depending on in what order the bank lists those transactions, there might be a line or two on your bank statement where your balance is actually inflated. If you're very poor at math, or just not paying much attention, it might not necessarily be immediately obvious that the check simply canceled itself out, and all you actually did was withdraw $500 of your own money--leading you to, perhaps, go on TikTok and tell a bunch of people that you discovered a hack for free money.

However, if you did not already have $500 in your bank account before depositing the fake check and withdrawing $500, then when the bank's computer goes, "Time to take $500 out of account #678901, and put it in account #678901!," it will go, "Uh-oh! Account #678901 doesn't have $500!"

And that's when you, as the owner of account #678901, start getting notices about your account being overdrawn. And, possibly, notices about how the check you deposited was returned for Non-Sufficient Funds. Depending on how many automated processes this thing goes through before a human being gets involved and sees what you did, you could have multiple different fees and penalties imposed, both for writing a bad check and for trying to deposit one.

And if, instead of/in addition to withdrawing a big wodge of cash, you make a bunch of debit-card purchases, each of those is going to show up as a separate Non-Sufficient Funds transaction, and incur a separate fee from your bank. The place where you made the purchase may also add a penalty, on top of what you still owe for whatever you bought, to cover what their bank charged them for the issue. (It will have been indicated somewhere, in very small print, that by using your debit card at this establishment, you are agreeing to pay this fee should the transaction be returned as NSF.)

So these people can end up owing a good bit more than they originally tried to steal.

Lazarus EP#04 - Don't Stop the Dance: Eleina is able to hack Dr. 909's hidden wallet and discovers he is working with an investor named Sam Stephenson, who sold off all his Hapna stock before Skinner's announcement, and deduce Dr. 909 helped Skinner disappear in return for information his plans for Hapna. With Sam being their only link to Dr. 909, the team decides to infiltrate one of his exclusive parties. Meanwhile, Eleina continues to investigate the deposits made to the wallet, as they originate from physical ATMs located all around the world, and manages to discover that Dr. 909's true identity is the world famous DJ Visionary, who is also performing at the party. The team attempts to apprehend both Sam and Dr. 909, but they flee in a helicopter. Axel grabs on to the helicopter as it takes off, and with some help from Leland's drone, is able to shoot it down. Axel then interrogates both men but discovers neither of them have a connection to Skinner. However, Dr. 909 found out about Hapna's true nature after hacking the pharmaceutical company Delta Medicinal, proving they knew about Hapna's dangers and suggesting they are involved with Skinner. Elsewhere, a monkey among many kept in a lab suddenly dies, suggesting the threat of Hapna is very real.

Common Side Effects EP#09 - Cliff's Edge: Hildy convinces Marshall to grow the mushrooms, and everybody at the mushroom farm begins to produce them and give them away. Meanwhile, Frances and Rick go to a secret facility where they try developing a synthetic equivalent of the mushroom, which fails as the users show signs of schizophrenia and other ailments. Copano and Harrington find out that Marshall is still alive and working at the farm when they interrogate Zane, but while Harrington wants to report their findings, Copano asserts that there is a conspiracy at play, and decides to try to solve the Marshall case by himself. Danny? The SuperTM. If he could be normal, they all know he’d go for it. Team tech guy (engineering only. His hacking is Ass by Bat StandardsTM), quipy and puntastic one close to Comic Relief. Fights like a rabid raccoon on purpose and refuses to learn forms—he takes down masters by refusing to learn their crafts. Gets intel from the Dead and makes it an everyone else problem. Handles civilians as poor strength control and being intangible makes a lot of weapons useless. Cloning king and intangible bastard on distraction duty. Trips the traps on purpose and by accident.

Release these three on a case and Chaos abounds with Duke doing the ‘we did not do any of that’ and somehow being believed. Danny is more interested in constellations atm. Stephanie is slinking away before she’s seen and the truth has a shot of coming out. The sooner she escapes, the less likely they are to get caught and her to be chewed out as the Responsible OneTM by Bruce.

Babs tends to give them silly blackmail in return for the show and new reaction pics she got from the cameras.
