Shoutout to people who speak "overly formally." You deserve to express yourself in whatever way feels most natural and fulfilling for you. The way you speak isn't pompous, annoying, or mockable; it's just how you communicate, and there's nothing wrong with that. Your voice adds creativity and diversity to this world, and I think that's amazing.

Giving nonspeaking kids and kids with difficulty using oral speech access to AAC as soon as possible needs to be normalized.
Of course you want your child to communicate, that's fine, that's GOOD. But oral speech isn't the only way to do that, and refusing to give your child a way to communicate because it isnt the form of communication you favor isn't okay.
Its OKAY if your kid never learns (or relearns) to use oral speech. ITS OKAY.
"But I put them in speech therapy to learn to talk! I don't want them to use that tablet all their life. They need to learn to talk using their mouthparts." Why??
First of all, AAC is proven to actually help people develop language skills and oftentimes oral speech. So any concern about AAC hindering development of oral speech is uncalled for and irrational. But along with that, ORAL SPEECH ISNT THE ONLY GOOD FORM OF COMMUNICATION!! AAC is good. Sign is good. Etc.
Saying otherwise and/or preferring your child to use oral speech IS ableist, and yes, it IS harmful to everyone.

someone with speech difficulties is not "refusing to speak" to piss you off specifically. whether someone is able to speak or not is completely out of their control, and I can promise that you getting annoyed at them (or choosing to ignore their other communication methods) isn't helping

Poc also use AAC. Even if not seen often, even if not talked about often. Even if not many know what is. We can use AAC, some of us do use AAC.
Even if more used by white people, even if most POC don’t use still need option for darker skin color. And this include in free versions. Shouldn’t have pay get option similar my skin color. Am not a male bald white kid. I’m black I’m female I have textured hair. I use AAC like the other kids.
Also need include different hair options. Even if need keep simple so not so expensive. Atleast give hair options not bald. Atleast pony tail or bun.
Love use AAC but IS discouraging have change everything to somewhat be personal to self.

this is from the last post i reblogged, but here are alternatives to "going nonverbal" or "going nonspeaking:"
verbal shutdown
loss of speech / speech loss
situational speech loss
if anyone knows any others, feel free to add on. if you don't understand why alternatives are needed, please see the linked post; it's a long one which is why i made another post with the alternatives, but even just reading part of it shows you why.
be kind to your neurodivergent and disabled peers.

i dont expect much traction here, but out of curiosity: if you are nonverbal/semiverbal or experience verbal shutdown, are you still able to audibly laugh?
personally during verbal shutdown i cant laugh, which makes me wonder about other peoples experiences.
EDIT: please be mindful that you cannot "go nonverbal", which is why the term verbal shutdown exists. if you are nonverbal/semiverbal, it means you are like that all the time. verbal shutdown is temporary. link
