I am the person reading my own fanfic publicly.
1988 - I read my first fanfics in public. I don't even have a word for what I'm doing.
1993 - I start distributing them; physical copies at my high school and later the nearest college
1997 - I go to college and finally have a word for 'stories about other peoples' characters'! Distribution continues, now online.
2004 - I start reading fanfics at open mics. Zero regrets.
2006 - I get to MC the Tolkien Track at Dragon*Con. I host five different fanfic panels. Later that same year, I'm at my first NaNoWriMo event. During the dinner, three participants chat about how fanfic isn't real writing. I'm mostly quiet. During some icebreaker/announcement time, I talk about events I'm hosting. One young participant at another table blurts out who I am; another adds 'I've read all your fanfic!' Three naysayers clutch their pearls and look like they might faint. One of the best moments of my life.
More of the same for many years, including top billing of the panelists at one convention and some VIP treatment at another (was contacted and asked to present versus me filling out a form somewhere, then getting pre-con walk-about with head of programming and lots of 'is this room okay for you' sorts of questions to make sure amenities are good.)
2017 - I enter a library. There's someone shelving books on the top shelf standing on a ladder. I say hello to her; she says hello, then suddenly switches to 'Oh! I read your latest chapter last night! It was so good!'. Announcement is heard throughout the library due to the height at which she was at. I am unphased and stay to chat and answer questions.
These are but a handful of the lovely encounters and experiences I've had over the years because fanfiction was not stigmatized for me. Over the years, I had multiple teachers who encouraged my fanfic writing (even though we didn't have a name for it). I had peers who wanted to be self-inserts into the storylines.
One of my favorite panels I've done was at a small public library one-day scifi/fantasy convention. I ran a panel on how to write fanfiction in the children's library for ages 5 to 12, and it was the best to have these kids who were all proud of what they wrote, and all excited to write about their favorite characters -- especially the five year old who was writing 1970s Wonder Woman stories (her mother helped her with some of the words).
So I'm not going to click on anything because I don't want to see the results. I want to live in a world where everyone can be proud and excited, where there is no shame or stigma for fanfic writers.
Because we're all awesome.
Even those of you in the back shaking your heads in doubt, plagued by imposter syndrome and negative comments.
We're ALL awesome.

The following is a transcript for this episode. For the complete transcript, please navigate to the show’s website.
[00:00:00] So I have a very important question for you, my dear friends, and this is how we're starting off this episode. Are you passionate enough about the things you like to do? And because this is this podcast, are you passionate enough about writing to be able to release something bad at first, knowing that you will get better later that going through those trials and going through the process of releasing something is part of the experience of getting better. Then you need to take a second and listen to today's guest, Nicholas J. Evans, who went from writing a collection of short stories in high school that he was convinced nobody would want to read to landing a three book deal today on Writing in the Tiny House.
[00:00:58] Hello. Hello. Hello, and welcome to the show. Welcome to Writing in the Tiny House. I am your host Devin Davis, and I am the guy living in a tiny house who is here to show you that you can write that work of fiction regardless of how busy you think you are. And the perfect example of that is today's guest Nicholas J. Evans. He is 30 years old. He works full time. And in his spare time, when he's not playing with his kids, he writes. And he has a beautiful message to share. And we will get to that message here in half a second.
[00:01:58] As far as announcements go with this podcast, I have teamed up with Editor Krissy Barton, from Little Syllables Editing. She was on the show back in March, and we had a wonderful show. I fully recommend that you go back and listen to the final show that happened in March. She was here with me in the tiny house, talking about the process of editing. Anyway, I have teamed up with her to roll out kind of a new program. And I say that as a way to kind of tease.
[00:02:35] I apologize right now, but I want to let you know that fun things are rolling out, provided things work out according to a specific schedule. Sometimes I get some hairball ideas and sometimes the execution is kind of hard to do, kind of impossible to do at other times. And so we are discovering different ways that I can share my writing with you, my listeners, and also with people who don't listen to this show.
[00:03:10] So basically I have started writing some smaller things. I have blabbed on and on and on about my book about my works in progress, and I still have those. And those have certainly not been like thrown in the garbage or something stupid like that. They have been put on the back burner for a second, just because I am eager to share my writing. On this podcast I blab all day long about the tips and tricks to do it. And so I actually want to show examples. Release something for people to read sooner than a book, sooner than a full blown novel, which can take up to two years or longer to write or produce or whatever, especially if you're not already published through a major publisher.
[00:04:03] And so I have started doing some shorter things. They all tie into the books that I'm writing. They are short stories set in the same world as the books that I am working on too. And these, I am going to put on a schedule. I will tell you more about what that whole schedule will look like in a later episode of Writing in the Tiny House, but be excited.
[00:04:30] This whole process is so fun. Writing something according to a schedule is hard and awesome. And it really gets me excited about writing and it gets me more eager to share it with you, my listeners, what I can do, what I have done, some of the ideas that are in my mind. And so it's not just about advice or guidelines anymore.
[00:04:59] Now we are going to actually have the real written word to share with you on a regular basis. So I will touch base on a later episode to give better explanation and better description as to what all of this is actually going to be. But I wanted to share with you today that things are in the works. And so that's super exciting.
[00:05:26] So without further ado, let's go ahead and meet our guest. Nicholas J. Evans.
[00:05:35] I'm originally from New York and I've moved a lot over the course of becoming an author, and I'm writing novels and writing short fiction, so I lived in Delaware for a brief period of time. And I currently live in Maine with my wife and our three very young children. We have three daughters, all under the age of five and I work full time.
[00:05:56] I travel for work which means I, am not home as much as I would like to, be, but I try and use that time to my advantage. And that's where I work on a majority of my stories. So I work on them when I'm in hotels. I work on them when the kids are asleep at nap times, pretty much whenever I get the opportunity. Even going as far back as to when I started writing short stories, I would work on them on my phone, just so I would have the time during brief periods of the day.
[00:06:22] As you can see, Nick is a busy man and the idea of fitting in writing where you can fit it in is not new to most writers. Most writers do not support themselves with their craft. And so to be working a job and to be cranking out novels in his spare time is something that a lot of us are doing, which is so cool and so admirable.
[00:06:44] And so I wanted to find out a little bit more about his published works and what he's working on now.
[00:06:52] I began writing Order of Dust, which was my debut novel all the way back in 2017. I actually was working on a different novel at the time and I had hit writer's block. It was a completely different genre too. And I was like, I need something to work on. What am I going to be working on, while I'm just sitting here staring at a screen not knowing what to put down?
[00:07:11] So I began writing something that I originally thought I was going to release as a graphic novel. Actually, I began writing it in a script format with the hopes of sending it out that way. and I found that might've not been the right medium. So I turned around and started drafting it into a novel. And then around 2018, I was finished up with the second draft of it. And then I had started sending it out to publishers directly because it was my first work. I didn't want to get anything agented. I didn't think I was there yet. And I was lucky enough to get picked up by the Parliament House for a trilogy for my series. So I was very excited about that and I mean, that led to where we are now with the novel release in 2020, which was a weird time for books to release. It was a little bit of a different experience because everything had to be pushed digitally. We couldn't do signings. We couldn't do cons. We couldn't do anything. so a lot of it had to be just reaching out to different digital agencies to take care of things for us and hope that things were going to go well. Luckily enough, they did go well, which led to me working on throughout 2020 after we were already edited and everything was finished up for Order of Dust. I ended up working on the second novel of the series. And I had just finished a different novel, that I'll go into in a little bit that is actually releasing this September for a different publisher. COVID was very, very unfortunate and working from home was very difficult, but at the same time I was able to try and use as much downtime as possible to really hammer this out and give what I feel like is even a better product than the first novel.
[00:08:48] So the name of the trilogy is For Humans, For Demons, which will make sense in the grand scheme of things? So it's For Humans For Demons. The second, book comes out January of 20 22, no release date on the third, but I am halfway through the first draft of it and very excited. And then, Like I said, I do have another novel coming out with a different publisher in September of this year.
[00:09:11] The For Humans For Demon series is essentially about what if modern religion collapsed Similar to what we've seen in history where different religions end up taking the forefront. And this is about what if it's turned on its head and what if in a modern society what everybody believed to be true ends up not being? And everybody finds out about that truth and the chaos that ensues.
[00:09:36] So bringing that as the larger universe, it focuses on the story of one character Jackson Crow who dies at the hands of the Unascended, which essentially to bring it to better terms a soul in this universe is called a Dust and sometimes they do not ascend for different reasons. So they end up remaining and taking on a host basically. They take over a body of a living person and they hide among people. Jackson was unfortunate for him and his fiance, were assassinated by one of the Unascended, which leaves him with a little bit of a grudge, and he gets the chance from the true higher beings to come back and basically work for them to take care of the issue, which is these Unascended who are hiding as normal people are committing heinous crimes that they are not actually being targeted for.
[00:10:28] So it's all about his story, about getting revenge. And then it slowly opens up to this bigger issue at hand, which is the world around him that is essentially collapsed because people do not have a belief structure anymore. And that goes for all of the different religions and how it affects the different groups of people, which really ends up coming out in the second and the third books
[00:10:52] So I have read Order of Dust and it is a wild ride. It is fast paced. It is exciting. It is filled with action and all of the things you could hope from a book like that. And so I wanted to figure out what was his inspiration to write a book like this.
[00:11:10] I wanted to write something That was, based on religion. I wanted to go that route. But originally when I was doing this, the only idea I had was what if somebody had to hunt people? What if somebody had this job where they had to hunt people cause they were different? And it just kept breaking down until I was like, well, what if he's also different? A lot of the influences for that book came right from graphic novels from monga, from old scifi, noire stories. So things like Philip K Dick or even things like Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman. A lot of inspiration from Yasuhiro Nightow who is best known for writing Trigun in the nineties and Gunn Grave. So a lot of that I want it to kind of mush together and I was like, this would just be something fun. And, and that's what I did.
[00:12:00] Book number two was Wing Clipper, that one releases in January of 2022. And that one is going to break into the larger world. The first book was very focused on Jackson, focused on introducing characters and introducing some antagonist, but the second book really opens up. It is longer. So it won't be as fast of a read. But that was the goal. I wanted to introduce people in a way, almost like what Stephen King did with Gunslinger, the dark tower series. The first book gunslinger is very short. It's a very quick read and then slowly gets longer.
[00:12:31] That was my goal here is I want to get people drawn in and then really open it up in the second and say like look how everybody else has been affected by this. And then the third book right now is called The Arm of the Savior. In the third book, we'll close everything out in a very large scale. I've been building up to something with these hoping that it ends in a larger way than it started, where it starts very narrow, very singular, and it ends more global. And that one does not have a release date as of yet just because the second book's not even out, but I would say that's probably going to be somewhere around, early to mid 2023.
[00:13:07] Now while his trilogy for humans for demons is with one publisher. Nick has done what many successful writers have done. And he is publishing another book under a different publisher. Another publishing house picked him up for this book for this idea. And so. Just depending on contracts and agreements, it is entirely possible for a person to put out work under various different publishing houses.
[00:13:39] And Nick has done that too with his upcoming novel that releases this month, even though in the dialogue here in the audio, it says it releases in September. We get to remember that it is now September and this interview wasn't recorded this month. So please don't get confused.
[00:13:57] The book releasing in September is with a different publisher, Black Rose. What ended up happening was I was working on another while I was doing the editing process for Order of Dust. I wanted to work on something else, but I didn't want to dive into the second book without first working with the different content editors, the line editors to kind of get their idea and feedback on that first book. But I wanted to work on something.
[00:14:19] I had been writing a lot of shortstories, and I wanted to break it up from the normal. And at the time I had just come up to Maine for work. So I was very far away. My wife and kids were down in Delaware. On the weekends I was driving down there 10 to 12 hours to see them and then driving back So it was a lot of alone time for Monday through Friday. And I just felt like I needed to do something with this time, so I wrote the book.
[00:14:43] It's called The Ones Who Could Do Anything. And it's an urban fantasy, but it's mainly just about dealing with struggles. I don't want to give too much away, but surviving after something terrible happens. And it follows just a group of young people who find each other because of their misfortunes and discover that they have some innate abilities that lend themselves to each other. So it's, again, it's something that at first, and this is, this is what I loved when I had brought up to the publisher at first, they were like, this sounds like, like the premise of it, like something that we've read a hundred times.
[00:15:21] And I was like, I know, you know, I'm not trying to give you something that everybody already knows just by looking at the cover of the book. But luckily they were like, you know, We read the first three chapters of it. Can you send us the rest of the manuscript? And when they did, they really like, they're like, this is different.
[00:15:37] As many writers bring out a certain work or certain ideas or bring these different things to life. Oftentimes there are specific goals that they have with these things. And I wanted to find out what was the reason behind four humans were demons and this new book, because they are so different, different publishing houses.
[00:16:06] Different ideas, different concepts. And so I wanted to figure out more about that.
[00:16:11] One thing I would love for everybody to know is everything that I write and put out. I want to be very different. And I think the people who enjoy For Humans For Demons and enjoy that series, maybe would read The Ones Who Could Do Anything and feel like, this is different. It's a little bit darker and more base of reality rather than something that's completely scifi.
[00:16:33] But I want everybody to be open minded to that. I think some of my favorite authors branching from every different medium, have always tried to dabble in that a lot of their books are not linear. Obviously there are authors out there who do release very similar books and they do very well. But when I think of my favorite Neil Gaymon I don't feel like his books are the same. I feel like I pick up any of his books and they're different and that's my overall goal. And I wanted to let people know that right from the start, because I want people to pick up different books and be like, this is different from that one. And I love them for what they are.
[00:17:06] And so came the big question. How did any of this get started? How far back does this go for him? When was the first time he put pen to paper in a creative way? And how did all that go?
[00:17:24] I appreciate this coming up because I don't get to share this a lot because I don't want them to intertwine, but I've been in bands my entire life. I was a musician for most of my life. I'm 30 now. I was in bands all through high school and everything.
[00:17:36] And then in 2011, I was in a band called Nora Stone, and we were a post hardcore group. I say we were, but they're still together. A hardcore group. And we ended up releasing a short EP and it got us on a label. We did a lot of traveling. We did a lot of touring. So were on the road, a good amount. We did Metal Mayhem Festival.
[00:17:56] We did Crowd Surf America with CHODOs and Blessed the Fall. This is all a bunch of Warp Tour bands. But we did a lot of that for a very long time. And after the birth of my first daughter, I realized I had to start dwindling it down. I had already started the career I'm in now.
[00:18:11] And I was like, what can I do? And back in high school, and when we're on the road, I would just write short stories. A lot of it, I'm going to be honest with you. If anybody remembers my yearbook shout outs to to New York, if anybody remembers my yearbook, it asks something about what do you want to do?
[00:18:26] And at the time I want it to be a graphic novel writer. And that is in my yearbook. So I would just create characters, write backstories for them. And that's what I would do on my phone to pass the time is what I thought was fun. So when I moved to Delaware and parted ways with the band, I needed something to occupy my time and I did not want to dive back into music.
[00:18:45] I had done it for too long. I didn't want to start over. I ended up just writing short stories again on my phone for fun. And my wife had actually read one of them and she was like, how come you never release anything? Like, how come you just sit here and write in the notes section of your phone and then delete it.
[00:18:59] And I was like, I don't know. I don't think I have anything people want to read. I worked on something and she read the first draft of it and was like, I really like this. Like, you should just try and get this published. And I was like, I don't think people are going to like it, but okay. And then it got published.
[00:19:13] And then all of a sudden I have my mother, my friends, my family, who were like, you know, I like this. I don't understand why you didn't do this sooner. And I'm like, I, I don't know. You probably wouldn't like what I wrote in high school.
[00:19:23] And so this is actually the take home, this upcoming little statement that Nick makes for me during this interview. And this is why I opened this episode with that question of, are you willing to release something bad or at least release something that requires some refinement and requires some work in order for you to get better?
[00:19:45] My biggest piece of advice, would first, I guess we'll start with one. Right. Even if it's bad, even if you just have a story in mind and you're like, I'm not going to put these words together properly, and people are not going to like this Cause that's where I was at. Write. And then just send it in. Have faith in yourself, send it in and trust me, trust me When I say the publishers are going to tell you when it's bad I've had a lot of publishers. I've had my own publishers tell me it's bad. And that's just part of the process is how you get better. And I've said this in the beginning, but I feel like every time I write something new, it gets better.
[00:20:24] And for new writers, that's going to be the case. The first thing you put out there might not even get published. And then you have to really look at the feedback you got and say.
[00:20:31] Okay. They didn't like it for these reasons. Is it the story? Is it me? Is it something I need to change? But at the same time, you want to maintain your own voice and you're not going to please everybody.
[00:20:42] And eventually you'll get good enough. And eventually the right publisher will come along, have faith in your project and really carry you through the way. And second piece of advice, listen to your publishers. If you're going that route, if you're going self published Listen to your beta readers and listen to the editors that you bring on.
[00:20:58] But if you're going a traditional or an indie publisher route, listen to them. Because most of the time, 99% of the time from my experience so far, they want what's best for your book without removing the parts of the book that make it yours. So definitely just write whatever you can send it in. They're going to tell you it sucks and then listen to them when they tell you it sucks.
[00:21:22] And that is the biggest lesson with developing any form of talent, just like learning to play the piano or learning to play a musical instrument or learning how to paint or draw or whatever. It may be different skills that you have at work. So wing. I don't know. All of these things are talents and talents require practice and paying attention to feedback.
[00:21:49] And so that means that sometimes you get to be brave and you get to write something that may not be great. And you get to give it to a few trusted people in order for them to find the holes in it that you don't see. And in order for them to pick apart some of the clunky things and to offer some guidance and some advice.
[00:22:10] So that, that bit of work can be even better than it was when it, when you began it. And so that is the take home from me to you. If you are looking to seriously get into writing, and it's not something that you do all the time, just start, write anything and then give it to somebody to critique.
[00:22:34] The feedback is the most important lessons. With writing so that you can get better hearing how your work can improve is a very vulnerable space to be in. But it, like I said, it is the biggest lesson on how to do it better and on how to make that specific piece better. So that is it for today. If you are interested in reading Order of Dust or The Ones Who Can Do Anything, go ahead and follow the link in the show notes and you will be able to check those out.

4 Ways to Incorporate Cyber Security Automation into Your Company
A glimpse at software tools for top security and how they boost efficiency and productivity and internet security
Businesses of all types are constantly looking for ways to increase efficiency and profitability in all facets of their business— from day-to-day to cyber-health. Regardless of how you feel about personal level automation — whether you think automation is awesome or it's the harbinger of death for cyber security workers — it doesn't change the fact that technology will transform the very essence of potential cyber security jobs. That's because incorporating process management and cyber security technology into business processes is one of the easiest ways to accomplish many of the company's goals.
Nevertheless, business automation comes in all forms, that can include a range of process control and automation software for protection. So, what are those things, how do they function and how do they play into your security processes?
Just let's figure it out.
The value of Cyber Security Automation
What comes to mind when you hear the term 'information security automation’? This automated method involves balancing the field of play between cyber security professionals and cyber criminals. The goal is to reduce the number of threats by reducing vulnerabilities while ignoring known cyber threats by preventing zero-day assaults.
Let's just dig a bit further down. Cyber security monitoring also deals with the following:
Making data collection faster and more efficient.
bringing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies and processes into the fold to enhance organization’s analytical capabilities.
eliminating routine, time-consuming, non-cognitive tasks to enable IT security experts to focus on higher-priority activities and responsibilities.
Many of these elements are suitable for any company. After all, growing company's aim should be to make a corporation more profitable and redeploy human resources to where it's really required. But the structures and methods also need the level of improvement.
Many company reports show that cyber security budgets are on the rise among companies and businesses Globally. IDC data shows that global spending in cyber security infrastructure is expected to reach US$103 billion this year. In addition, in the foreseeable future, the cyber security automation industry— which includes the use of AI and ML— is to expand. Indeed, a Research and Markets Study shows the AI cyber security market is expected to reach $38 billion by 2026.
Investing in cyber security technology and automation systems is critical for all businesses — especially when cyber criminals conduct ever more sophisticated cyber-attacks. Yet how much is there of a tool and solution? Check this out:
Tools and resources for automating cyber security
Examples of information management systems and cyber security frameworks include:
Robotic process automation (RPA)
Security orchestration automation and response (SOAR) and security incident and event management (SIEM)
public key infrastructure (PKI) certificate and key management
Custom software development
We will address many of the merit of each of these cyber security automation approaches and how it helps you to improve performance, maximize cyber security efficacy, reducing expenses and improve overall operating processes.
1. RPA - Robotic Process Automation
Robot process automation usually refers to the process of automating repetitive tasks by using robots— both physical and artificial, such as autonomous bots. In terms of cyber security and network automation, this typically refers to allowing automated systems to perform low-cognitive functions such as testing, tracking, and low-level event reaction. You know, collect and aggregate data, perform simple processes for danger search and recognition, and other low-cognitive tasks.
Benefits to integrating RPA into your business
There are many benefits to using RPA from the operational, dangerous and legislative standpoints. As one aspect, it allows for more effective cyber security by increasing the responsibility of manually performing repeated tasks. It also lets you eliminate the cyber security's most significant risk: human interaction. People pose the greatest risk to the electronic safety of businesses and corporations by intentional or by human error. This makes the data safer, by increasing the human aspect.
Borrowing from and building from Ernst & Young Global Limited (EY) research, there are several ways that robotics technologies may help reduce risks in cyber security:
RPA reduces vulnerability detection and response time through predictive alerts and notifications.
RPA helps with program and hardware production and acquisition, helping to identify weak danger types, and reducing safety hazards.
RPA improves security by automating the roll-out and patching updates.
RPA helps cyber security teams tackle the void in expertise.
RPA does not tire or emotionally "check out" on the job, providing 24/7/365 security services.
RPA limits involvement of IT security practitioners to encourage them to concentrate on other highly cognitive tasks.
RPA prohibits the processing of sensitive personal information by any individual interest.
In addition, RPA would also keep the company in compliance with certain regulations, such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or Payment Card Data Security Standards for the Industry (PCI DSS). Automation, for example, can be used to gather data, conduct informed consent warnings, monitor data breaches, and archive all data held for client audits. Why do many people go about these tedious tasks when automated systems can do that for you?
RPA provides numerous benefits for businesses and other organizations. Therefore, no organization can rely on RPA alone for more comprehensive security operations which require higher computational and analytical capabilities. This dimension is best left to a combination of cognitive-learning programs and the intervention of human observers.
2. Security Orchestration Automation and Response and Security Incident and Event Management
Security orchestration automation and response to security orchestration is a term coined by Gartner back in 2017, It applies to a mix of approaches that maximize the resources and productivity of the security operations centre without tying down your human resources in low-level activities.
This helps simplify three key tasks related to security in information— protection orchestration, security analysis, and security response— by expanding hazard and vulnerability detection, security response, and security operations integration skills.
Which sounds very much like disaster response and event management techniques, isn't it? SOAR and SIEM are in many ways similar— after all, they both gather and use unique data from multiple sources to detect some anomalous activity. Though these two approaches stacks often operate hand in hand with Security Operations Centers (SOCs), they often differ in a few respects:
SIEM is more procedural in nature. This packed solution system requires manual responses to alerts and regular changes and improvements to identification methods, rule sets, and signatures for results, consistency and effectiveness. However, it is mainly limited to detecting known threats and is less successful in acknowledging fresh or uncertain threats.
SOAR is a bit more interesting in its use of internal and external software and it takes certain SIEM warnings and reacts to them dynamically when necessary for triage and remediation. It depends on the cognitive technology and methods that use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to learn from emerging risks and help identify new ones.
The benefits of using SOAR and SIEM Solutions
SOAR is the use of technology to optimize the security operations and response to incidents by eliminating repetitive tasks and organizing (or "orchestrating") the structures, resources and procedures of the enterprise to their full advantage. For example, SOAR in a Security Operations Center (SOC) promotes SIEM resources by building on them and Providing added value.
Security orchestration often profits from being successful in protecting the data from fraudulent activity. The above EY research reports a "50 to 70 percent reduction in time to detect and react to a phishing attack" By using robotic systems in data gathering, updating and remediation processes.
How do you determine if the company can profit from the SOAR technologies? Is that ROI worth the contribution? To assess this, ask yourself the following questions:
Would you be constantly inundated with boring, mind-numbing and routine activities that could be carried out by automation?
Do you have ready access to actionable intelligence so you can make informed cyber security decisions?
Do your workers get warning about exhaustion? Think of doctors and nurses hearing alarms going off the whole day and not having the time or money to handle it all.
Have you identified processes which could improve the automation of cyber security?
Do you weigh the costs of the salary and benefits of the IT security workers for the approaches to network automation?
If your answer is "yes" to these questions, then you need to find any options and make big decisions. After all, other safety-related tasks contribute to automation, and others... Sure, and not that much. Please take the time to carefully examine the pros and cons of incorporating digital systems and determine the true value of each project to your business.
3. Certificate Management
The widespread use of SSL certificates and keys resulting from the requirement to encrypt Google's website has created many hazardous blind spots. One of the biggest threats to the security of websites— and the success of your business— is a lack of visibility within your network and key public infrastructure. If you are asked yourself the following questions, will you address them frankly, without even one iota of concern?
How many licenses have been given for your company, customers, and domain(s)?
Which type of Certificates have been issued?
Were all certificates issued by the same or different Authorities for Certificates (CAs)?
Who'd ask them?
How many keys are you holding in your organisation?
Where should those keys be stored?
Who has keys to these Certificates and Keys?
Can't honestly answer those questions anyhow? That is not how we thought, Okay. Which, unfortunately, isn't unusual. The existence of shadow certificates is a major responsibility that can result not only in security breaches but also in costly downtime of the website or service outages. Yeah, yes, and that also has multiple effects on the bottom line — missed sales, fines and penalties for non-compliance, and decreased consumer confidence (just to name a few). Nevertheless, analysis by the Ponemon Institute and KeyFactor indicates that unanticipated delays or outages cost companies nearly $3 million in instant loss of revenue, and an estimated average economic loss of $11.1 million.
That is wasted a lot of money for something that you didn't even know existed. But, how do you hold certificates that you don't care about when you expire? That is where cyber security and encryption technology comes into play in the context of PKI credential administration.
The advantages of Certificate Management System
Certificate Management Platforms and certificate search software help you manage more than certificates from websites. We'll help you recognize all the X.509 digital certificates that occur on the network regardless of brand, form, date of issue, or expiry date— this includes code signing certificates, application certificates, system and IoT certificates, and SSL/TLS certificates. Sectigo Certificate Manager (SCM), or what used to be known as Comodo CA Certificate Manager (CCM), is an example of such a method. The advantages of Certificate Management System Certificate Management Platforms and certificate search software help you manage more than certificates from websites. We'll help you understand all the X.509 cryptographic certificates that exist on the network regardless of brand, type, date of question, or expiry date— this involves code signing certificates, device certificates, machine and IoT certificates, and SSL/TLS certificates. Sectigo Certificate Manager (SCM), or what used to be known as Comodo CA Certificate Manager (CCM), is an example of such a method.
In contrast, certification management systems will eliminate many of the time-consuming processes involved in processing hundreds, or even thousands of credentials and keys manually. These activities include:
automated issuance, review, activation, and removal of certificates.
automatic 90-day, 60-day, and 30-day certificate expiry reminders (depending on the CA or reseller's policy and assistance you are purchasing from).
automatic report generation; and
automatic end-user self-registration development.
We don't say you this just to give you a cyber security asset, when offering a nice credential management platform happens to us. Rather, we're just attempting to drive home the point that certification control is a very true, very significant concern for every company utilizing digital certificates.
Don't you believe us anyway? Just look at some of the big headlines over the last couple of years. Expired licenses have brought down some of the biggest names in the mobile and other industries, including Ericsson, Facebook, LinkedIn and even U.S. government territories!
Do not be like these guys — hold your digital certificates still accessible by taking advantage of the automated tools nowadays available for management. After all, a CM network is far better than the fees for non-compliance, court damages and attorneys you'll probably spend when shit finally hits the fan.
4. Custom Automation Software Development
The idea of creating custom automation systems is another field that we would be hesitant to not mention at least. We understand that every sector is specific, so client specifications also differ across a variety of industries. And while some current frameworks for cyber security automation may be helpful, designing custom solutions designed to suit the specific needs of your company may be valuable to your organization. This may be something the office of internal improvement can do, but more than likely you're going to want to hand that over to a third-party service provider.
Last thoughts
Cyber security automation offers advantages in terms of saved money and allowing the IT security professionals to make the most efficient use. Although the system isn't flawless, AI ad ML offers significant cyber security benefits that overshadow many of the drawbacks of the technology. As such, it is easy to see why security automation is listed as one of our top five cyber security trends for 2019—though we expect that this will continue well beyond even 2020.
Have you already invested your company on automating cyber security and encryption?

2019
The last day of 2019 was also the day I fainted for the first time--a fitting metaphor for the year.
2019 was overall very emotionally taxing. This year was emotionally defined by falling intensely, deeply in love with someone (who is a very private person so I will try to be vague to respect that) and being in a lot of pain because of situations mostly outside of our control. There were a lot of intensely joyous moments, and a lot of intensely sad ones. Throughout it all I wish I had communicated better. I also made some bad decisions with another person I really loved and cared about that resulted in us growing apart. Do I think I grew from the experiences? For sure. Do I wish I could have come upon these realizations through a different course of action? Also yes. Am I fully healed from the experiences? Not really, but I've been getting better.
2019 was also very bad in terms of research. It was the 2nd year of my PhD. After I submitted my rotation project I basically felt stuck in the swamp of my advisors rejecting new project ideas for like literally half a year. This, combined with my high emotional volatility (partially due to starting birth control), made me really sad, unmotivated, and susceptible to self-blame. I definitely had high expectations for myself and became frustrated at my lack of progress and felt a lot of pressure from myself to get my shit together. I also felt incredibly bad after most advisor meetings and not supported by one of them to the point where I had to have a conversation with him about the lack of support (which was very scary)! Things started picking up, though, near the end of the year. I published a paper in collaboration with a former post-doc/now professor elsewhere whom I learned a lot from, and started finally building out another system. I also started mentoring an undergrad who at some point told me I helped him feel like he had something important to say and belong at Stanford for the first time and those words meant a lot to me. I think I'm continuing to refine what I value as research contributions and increasingly think about what it means to build systems that aren't used outside of the lab to satisfy the annual conference publishing cycle. I'm also starting to feel the pressure of doing work that follows a narrative rather than random projects that interest me.
Oh, I guess in terms of "program requirements," I did finish taking required classes, passed qualifying exams, and got a master's degree. But honestly those weren't hard at all nor do I think are externally valued in the larger research community, so I don't really celebrate them as accomplishments beyond surface level.
In 2019 I saw two different therapists. The first one was awful, I think directly influenced some of my bad decisions, and also didn't respect my gender identity??? The second one is a lot better and I'm grateful to see her, even if 90% of our sessions are just talking about my relationship (romantic/advisor) issues, which is something I want to move away from in the future. But I also feel incredibly privileged when relationship issues are the primary stressors in my life--I am grateful I feel equipped to handle other crap, like deadlines, and don't have to worry about my own health.
Those were the main things that have colored this year. We'll now move into the section of this post where I go through my photos to jog my memory of other events.
New years started a tradition of getting dim sum with Jasper, Matthew, and Michelle dear to my heart. My high school friend was also visiting and we all attended a really awesome new year's eve party. I was also going on a lot of dates and having a lot of good sex, which made me really happy, and at the same time crying all the time at work. In February I received probably the best gift anyone has ever given me and saw Panic! at the Disco, which I said in an end of the year group meeting was a good memory of my year (it was, to relive my scene days!). In March I roadtripped both to Marin (which I had never to been before, despite all my years in the bay) and LA for Wondercon; it was nice to both see high school friends and go on a trip with the boo. In April I went on a hike with my office which was probably the start of us all becoming closer (we are the social office in the wing now, which I take pride in! Also we draw a lot of Pokemon which warms my heart). In May I went to CHI in Glasgow and then to Paris afterward, and the entire experience was very weird and bad and also too many flights were canceled and/or missed and I vowed to not return to Europe for a while, but man do I love the noodles at Trois Fois plus de Piment. In June we hosted a double apartment party with my downstairs neighbors (side note: I am really appreciative of the place I live in, for the community, convenience, and large-ass space and will be really sad to be kicked out fall 2020) and I started a friendship important to me. I cat-sat for my advisor (the one who doesn't make me feel bad) twice. I went to Redwood State Park with my family and hosted a summer solstice celebration. Over the summer a friend I met in Paris back in 2017 moved in with me. I had a much needed escape from the bay to Seattle where I was reminded how abundant the world can be. I also went to Tahoe to celebrate my parents' anniversary, and really liked stumbling upon a smaller lake with a cheap boat rental. Then I became FOMO about the highly competitive Bay Area camping and did a last minute walk-in at Redwood Basin in Santa Cruz, which made me realize that I don't actually love camping (but was nice nonetheless). I ate an expensive meal at Commonwealth before they closed. For my birthday we made a friendship quilt and I served my favorite dish of cumin lamb but it was also 90 degrees in my apartment (I felt really bad and bought two fans afterwards). I started buying many cartoon frog plush after being gifted a $3.99 on sale Safeway frog (called Baby!). I went on Tinder dates (one of which was at a quaker yard sale marketed as Harvest Festival where I got a 1970s Kermit puppet for like $2) that largely went nowhere. My high school friend visited and we were both sad about break ups. I did Inktober before I went to New Orleans for a conference on Bourbon St where everything felt like it was coated in a sticky film of alcohol. I almost missed my flight home because I fell asleep in a sculpture garden but I had the most amazing Uber driver who snaked his way through traffic (oh and the flight was delayed by like 3 hours). I went to kind of embarrassing haunted houses and pumpkin patches over Halloween, but also had the most incredible bowl of ramen at Mensho. My whole office dressed up as Zootopia characters which warmed my furry heart. I spent like $120 on a Pokemon shirt. I started playing Arkham Horror and rekindled another friendship important to me. In November went on a road trip to Big Sur because again, I had to escape it all. For Christmas Eve dinner I roasted a duck for the first time (which was delicious). Shortly after I waited in line for 2 hours for a rollercoaster at Great America, which taught me the value of buying a fast pass because at this point in my life that money is worth it, and then waited 2 hours in line at the DMV to get a RealID (I had made an appointment, which was the fast pass).
Okay, now we move to the hobby section!
I got really into sewing in 2019, having received a sewing machine last Christmas. I made a Judy Hopps (which I wore to CrunchyRoll Expo) and Korok cosplay (Fanime), several unsuccessful garments, a crab bean bag, a dice bag, a fanny pack, and put hearts nipples on a jumpsuit.
Shows! I think I went to way fewer shows this year. The ones I can remember are Elephant Gym, Thom Yorke the night before I had an 8am flight, Carly Rae Jepsen over pride weekend (also, she is my #1 artist of the year, which makes a lot of sense given my emotional space), Mitski at Stern Grove, Capitol Hill Bloc Party (which was super lame, except for Lizzo, where I cried), and the National (which was a fucking surreal experience as they played on Stanford's campus, I was the only one within earshot of myself who knew the words to Crybaby Geeks, and then the white catalog moms came up to me after to thank me for singing the song).
I also started playing my own music! I started playing viola again for the first time in 7 years (lol) in both pop-up concerts with the Awesome Orchestra (one in Golden Gate Park, one at the Exploratorium) and a string quartet through my school. Sometimes I am filled with joy and delight. Other times interpersonal tensions run high and also I am very bad at being in tune. It's life.
Media! I really liked Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 and Beastars. I feel like those were the only notable anime I watched this year? I saw the Farewell three times--first in Seattle where I sobbed for like 1 hour after the movie, the second time with my parents, and the third where Awkwafina was present for a Q&A. I thought Parasite was incredible and Promare was OK. I have spent an unfortunately large amount of my time playing Pokemon Masters. I finally beat BOTW and completed my Pokedex in Shield like 2 weeks after getting the game.
Resolutions! In my draft of my 2018 end of year post (which I never polished and posted, sorry), I said my resolutions were 1. come out to my parents 2. draw enough to table at an anime con 3. be disciplined about paper reading and have a doc. I did none of these things!!! However, for 1, I feel like I am well equipped to have this conversation but am waiting for my sibling to do it first out of respect. 2 was just bad. I barely drew this year except for gifts. 3 was okay--I did have a large doc in the beginning of the year when I was looking for ideas, but as time went on I abandoned it (I also stopped reading papers, which I don't think you're supposed to do as a grad student...)
My resolutions this year are phrased as intentions (-(c) Matthew). They span several categories. Relationships: I want to open myself to and actively seek experiences of love, because I miss that. That being said, I will only date someone if 1. they have their life together 2. they love themselves and 3. they challenge me to grow. (I do think you can experience love without dating; the thing I'm after is love in an expansive sense.) Work: I want to do enough work so I don't feel guilty about not doing enough work, and also not berate myself for taking a long time to do things. Hobbies: I want to sew at least one thing a month. Chinese: I want to improve my Chinese, especially pronunciation.
Having written this 20 days into 2020, it's not been so bad so far. But I was also really happy in the beginning of 2019. Here's to no global maxima, a monotonically increasing year!
#noon's shitty end of the year summary posts#lol i never post on here anymore but i got 8 years of summary posts so i gotta maintain the tag u get me

Solo Traveling
I’ll first start off by saying and acknowledging that I do come from a well household. My mom runs her own dry cleaners and my dad works at a hospital for computer programming. Wasn’t like that always. In elementary school, I had classmates leave school to go on vacation. Super jealous that they went because I hated being in school 🤣🤣🤣 so the few times I could go on vacation was during like the major breaks or holidays. As I got older and family tensions increased, i began traveling with other people. Let’s just say after a series of not knowing other people’s personalities, cliques, and plus ones....I called it quits with group traveling. It’s a huge part of why my extroverted personality changed to more of an introvert/ extrovert. Since I have my own money, why not travel by myself.
I’ll talk about the cons of traveling solo first.
It can be very expensive: even if you do go with a group...be prepared to shell out a couple of dollars depending on where your going, staying, and activities
Have to be more aware of the surroundings: there has been a couple of times I’ve been exhausted because I was trying to be more aware of what’s going on. I have to watch my own back without relaying on somebody.
It can be scary: not going to lie...the day of trips I get really bad anxiety that I kinda want to throw up. Scratch that, I have thrown up. For example, when I went to D.C, I wasn’t worried about Lyft or Uber because my big bro was picking me up. However other airports....I have no idea where lyft or Uber would pick me up. Certain airports like O’Hare Chicago airport has two levels. One is for traditional friend/ family pick up. The other level is for rideshares. Ever since that mess I decided to look up airports ahead of time and look at maps for where to find the designated area. Helps a lot of stress out.
Benefits of solo traveling
Lollllll there wasn’t a whole lot of cons. Granted not everyone is going to have the same experience as me. So this is all from my personal experience.
Planning can be fun: When you travel alone, YOU are in charge of everything. I’m every pop culture orientated so I’m looking for the best spots for photos, food, shopping, etc. it’s the millennial (probably spelled it wrong) in me.
Moving at my own pace: so this was the best part for me. I’m a huge theme park junky! When I went to Orlando with my parents back in 2017 we did Disney World all in one day. Yes it can be possible to visit all 4 parks in one day😂 but that trip in general had the most arguments I had with my mom. She basically complained about all the walking we had to do. Also couldn’t watch fireworks. Everything was so rushed that back in 2019, I did a redo Disney World trip. Oh! I’ll definitely be doing a multi part blog for that. So when you travel by yourself you don’t have to deal with “I don’t want to do this!” “Why we going here?” Less arguments...PERIODT
Moving at your own time: this kinda goes with your own pace. I’m a huge HUGE be on time person. One of my sayings is “If your early, ya on time. If your on time, ya late. If your late...don’t bother showing up”. It’s one of my biggest pet peeves when people aren’t on time. Idk if it’s just Asians but Asian people AINT NEVER ON TIME FOR ANYTHING! So you have free reign with time.
Flexibility: This was one of the things I found super awesome when it came to solo trips. My schedule to travel had so much flexibility. And since I was working in retail, I could do what I want...per say. If my days weren’t approved I’d still go on this trip🤣 but I found traveling during the off season for holidays or non busy or non important seasons were a lot cheaper. That’s what I kinda wanted to make up for; not being able to travel when I was younger and leaving school to go 🤣 now that I can...✌️
No cliques: personality wise, I describe myself as a walking tv show. So picture every Disney show, Nickelodeon, and VH1 reality shows all in one person. I really don’t fit into a mold so I call it an outsider habit. I thought I’d get super lonely when traveling alone but oddly...I’m more comfortable with it. There is this no judgement zone when traveling alone. When I went to Universal Studio with my parents, it was “why do you want to buy this” or “how old are you?” First of all...you can never be too old of anything:) This might be a con for others, so it all depends🤷♂️ besides with technology I’m able to FaceTime, Live Stream, record things I want others to see. Ha! This is what this blog is for!
In no way shape or form am I throwing shade to group trips. I call those experiences that helped shape my travel knowledge. I’m always grateful for that. But the couple solo travel tips I’ll give is this.
Research! I can’t stress this enough. Knowing where you are going can save so much hassle. If your traveling internationally know where your country embassy is just in case. Second, the culture of the city or country. Being knowledgeable can help avoid any cultural ignorance, stereotypes.
Flights: alright flights can be very touchy subject. I usually find great deals with Southwest when they offer sales. Sometimes buying two - one way tickets is cheaper than round trip. They also offer two free checked bags, one carry one, and one personal items. If Southwest is a little out of your budget, don’t worry! Other airlines have great prices. I use Google Flights.
Train: if your destination is a couple hours away, I’d suggest taking Amtrak. Believe it or not Amtrak depending on what city you go too have awesome deals. If you follow them on Instagram they have beautiful photos of scenic railways. When I was younger I had a huge obsession with trains. I had every train from Thomas The Tank Engine. 😂 anyways, trains also have dining cars, and sleeping cars. Some have observation decks so you can do a 360* of the surroundings
Car: I put this last for transportation. Believe it or not, traveling by car may sound cost efficient but it’s really not. Just from my personal experience from driving to Branson Missouri, Tennessee, Chicago. There is gas you have to pay and hotels can charge a ridiculous amount for overnight parking x the amount of nights your staying. WHEW CHILEEEE THE MESS!
Hotels & location: This is the boujee side of me. I like to be comfortable after a day of riding rides or exploring. Just being able to act like this is my home for the time being. I usually use Bookings.com, Trivago.com, etc. to find the best one. Use filters if you need to find exactly what you need. When I travel to concerts, I try finding hotels close to the venue. That way I’m not paying extra for lyft, Uber, or taxis. BTW, don’t ever take taxis after concerts. Such a rip off...idk if there is a law that prevents them for jacking up their prices.
Air BnB’s: So I found this to be half and half. Sometimes it’s less expensive sometimes...not so much. Air BnB is pretty much either paying for a room or whole house for a certain amount of days. My big bro introduced me to it when we went to LA. I used it on my road trip to LA with a “friend” who is no longer a friend. But it was more of other situations I don’t really use. Honestly after seeing videos of how people were being racist to other guests, that was a major turn off to me. Second I had a friend who posted a conversation of a Air BnB host who tried to play her. Yes the app does have host ratings and reviews but there are so many fees and rules that it’s like, I might as well pay for the hotel. Again it’s totally up to you but staying at a random strangers house....Issa no dawg if I’m traveling by myself.
BUDGETING IS CRUCIAL!! Anytime I go anywhere I budget how much I’m spending. So with that being said, I get all information from attractions I want to go see, restaurants, ride share, everything. You don’t have to be so exact like me but it certainly helps me to know exactly how much I’m spending. Lol
Oh!!!! Sign up for reward programs at any restaurant you eat, shops you shop, or hotels! I do it all the time because for a lot of reward programs just by signing up you get a freebie. So why not take advantage of it.
So I wrote this blog up at like 5:30AM in the morning 🤣🤣🤣😭 I know I’m in for a struggle. But I decided to do this blog post because I was just going through my social media of all the travels I did. I really hope it does help you guys out a lot.

STEP ONE IS DONE (My MtF HRT Journey)
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
Back in November of 2017, I made the decision to begin HRT after researching my fate if I began hormone therapy. It was a frightening moment as I sat in my car in a Walmart parking lot in Port Orchard (far away from my family) listening to the pounding rain as I held the phone in my hand. I was scared, I did not what to expect. ‘Was I doing this because of a fad, or a runaway LGBT movement? Was I doing this because since I was a child, I was fascinated with gender transformation...dysphoric due to my non-matching appearance.’
Just dial the number! Get it over with!
I punched the numbers...all 10 of them...and hovered my index over send. I closed my eyes as I let the rain carry me away and with a tap, the number was dialed and the phone was ringing. There was no turning back now! I placed the phone to my ear and waited...my throat tighter then a Gatorade bottle-cap on a hot summer day. The line was answered and this was where my story began...almost...
I called at the wrong time...Cedar River Clinics was not taking any more patients and the wait list was open in February...I would have to wait another 4 months. I wrestled with my fears as the days fell away and February came and the days came and gone. I wondered: ‘Could this be a sign that it was never meant to be?’ There was only one way to find out...but I could not find the courage to go through it all again.
Hospitalization isolated me from the world and I spent many hours debating and going over the pros and cons. Devising psychology tests to see if my desires were based either on body dysphoria, gender dysphoria or sexual dysphoria...and it was all of the above. I made a gamble with myself that if I was discharged from the hospital...I would not call, if I was admitted for another day...then I would call. It was up to fate.
With the word that I was going to be in the hospital for another five days...it was all the signs I needed. I dialed the number again and spoke with the receptionist on the other end as I was put on the books to be assessed...but not til May of 2018...another 4 months!
MTF HRT AT CEDAR RIVERS~TACOMA...
To say the least...it did not go well. I was so over prepared and the doctor (Dr. Marsh) was assessing me as an candidate for HRT...we did not get along!
Dr. Herrington was the second to assess me and we got along quite well as I chose to take the long way. Everything oral at the lowest dose possible. At the time, I had chosen a Gender Nonconforming title that over time would morph into a Gender Fluid title as I became comfortable with my transforming body.
For two months...nothing happened...well, except that my libido went first, which I was okay with. I was becoming discouraged as I continued to swallow my pills daily. Then, in June of 2018...my breasts began aching and hurting as I entered a budding stage. It was actually happening! I was changing!
Over time, I played this back-and-forth game with my HRT, hospitalization would stop the therapy and I become depressed. I begin and have to deal with the pain of changing...it is surprising that I did not become clinically depressed!
With another visit with Dr. Marsh (she seemed in a better mood this time), my therapy continued with the changing of estradiol patches to estradiol pills. This would be the last time I would see her as my care was shifted to an awesome doctor named Dr. Khattar. It was a welcome relief as I began opening up to him about my mental image of the anima I named ‘Mira’.
By the time it was October of 2018, I desired a more drastic transformation, to appear almost female...as if I was now transgender. I despised my male appearance and wanted the female appearance I thought of since I was seven years old.
By November, my health began to take a nose-dive and I was concerned that the therapy was affecting my CF and asthma. I spoke with Dr. Khattar about it, but he did not know of any medical reason to be concerned and dismissed the concern. Again, in January...I brought it up again...as I was popping in-and-out of hospitals like a gofer in the ground. By March of 2019...he became somewhat concerned about the rapid lung disease...but did not have the skills to assess the situation. I asked back in January if it would be appropriate to seek a doctor who specializes in transgender health and he said yes.
Only problem...finding a PCP who specializes in Transgender Care is like Abraham seeking that one righteous soul in Sodom and Gomorrah...it is almost impossible.
SEEKING A TRANSGENDER PCP CARE DOCTOR...
I began searching the web for transgender ‘friendly’ doctors (as I was certain my own PCP isn’t transgender friendly...and I did not want to put our relationship in a bad place by asking) and found...nothing! Widening my search, I finally found a program that was tailored to transgender care...

This was a godsend as this was what I needed to find...I also looked at the UW’s transgender program...but it was useless in my search for a local provider. And their web browser was...discombobulated. It would seem that only Virginia Mason was the only provider that offered medical services and I was thinking: ‘If I do consider ‘surgical’ modifications...this might be a good start’ as my only other option was:

Oregon Health & Science University has a pretty comprehensive program like Virginia Mason; except that they also perform SRS surgery (which is still forbidden here in Washington); and if I wish to follow this path to correction, there services would be needed...only problem, OHSU is almost 400 miles away! So, it was Virginia Mason...Step One...
As I began to research in the services and providers, I was enlightened, but confused: It seemed they offered facial plastic surgery (which was considered), primary care with a PCP, voice feminization, breast augmentation, orchiectomy and even laser hair removal (which I need for the face). There services were far beyond the reach of Cedar River and having their services would open further transformation.
Now came the hardest part...finding a doctor. I have pretty good insurance, but medicare will only get you so far. Then, there is the possibility that they are out of network. Or they don’t take Medicare. The possibilities for error were endless. I narrowed my search to the closest clinic to me: Bainbridge Island Clinic. Yes, it was almost 1 hour away...it was better then going all the way to Seattle or Kirkland! So this narrowed the field of candidates down to two:

So the first candidate was Dr. Tomberg. His ratings were good; 4.9 out of 5 with 262 patients rating. His background states that his specialties are in Family Medicine, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine and Transgender Health.

The second candidate was Dr. Worth. Her ratings were also good; 4.9 out of 5 with 261 patients rating. Her background states that her specialties are in Family Medicine, Primary Care, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine and Transgender Health...just like Dr. Tomberg...they were almost identical!
With all my research completed (and even using this path in my fictional story ‘SRS- A Realistic Transgender Transformation’) (https://mtfhrtnonconformadvocate.tumblr.com/post/181005815302/srs-a-realistic-transgender-transformation-part), I was greatly hesitant to seek further care as I always thought I could manage my HRT on my own. But with female traits coming in...I thought long term:
SRS to finalize my transformation?
What about mammograms?
Hormone balancing?
Trans-woman problems?
The more I considered the possibilities, that more clear it became...I needed a transgender friendly doctor who could manage, maintain and further my care. The only problem...I had to call...
MAKING THAT CALL...
On March 23 2019; I finally made the decision to call Virginia Mason and see if I can be seen. I spent much of the morning telling myself I was going to call, even wrote a blog-post about calling...but I did not put the plan into action until 3:40pm. I sat in my room, here at my second home, debating my call and tired of the stress I was causing myself, I took my phone and was ready to call. I however stopped as I found an excuse not to call...I needed my insurance card. That was in my car and I thought it would be symbolic to call while in the same car...except, things changed!
As I pulled out my insurance card and selected my phone, my adopted father, Mitch pulled into the driveway and parked. I was hoping to make this call alone, as I knew how Mitch felt about his gay son, and turned off my phone. Talking for a few minutes, I returned back to my room and sat on my bed and toiled over my phone. I took my tablet and computer and pulled up Virginia Mason’s web-page and swallowed my fear as I selected Dr. Worth’s number on my phone.
If it was possible, I wanted to be seen by Dr. Worth. As a transgender male-to-female, I do not want another guy messing around with me...it just does not make me feel comfortable.Even my relationship with Dr. Khattar is stressed...just because he is a male...and I don’t feel right talking about sexuality, breasts, feminization with him. Would I be comfortable with a woman? Well, I was pretty open with Dr. Herrington and on the second round, even Dr. Marsh! It was like woman-to-woman speaking, if that makes sense. Would I share this same relationship with Dr. Worth...I do not know.
With the phone ringing, I get an automated answering machine that gives me two options: Call to schedule or call to refer. Pressing the number 1, I am patched to the Bainbridge Island Clinic as I introduce myself. At the moment, I wonder: ‘Do I use my legal name or my transgender name?’ Considering billing and insurance purposes, I choose my legal name, knowing I can always add ‘Mira’ once the insurance is sorted out.
As the words: Regarding Transgender Services slipped from my lips, I could not believe who easy they came out...no hesitation...I have certainly changed! The receptionist was very polite as she took my name, birthday, address and then asked...
“Which gender do you go by?”
“Ah...” I stammered as I thought of the label “...I prefer gender nonconforming...” which was wrong as I am closer to being gender fluid and even simply just transgender now. This seemed to be the key word as I gently guided the conversation.
“Would you be okay seeing a PA or MD?”
“MD would be preferable, but if seeing a PA means getting in sooner, that would work, just think seeing a MD would be sensible considering my condition.”
“Would you prefer a male or female?”
Well, I did not want to be sexist and say male, and I did not want to seem like an exhibitionist and say female...I stated clearly. “Female...I was hoping to be seen by Dr. Worth if possible...”
“Ah...” there is a pause as she looks for a slot “...Doctor Worth isn’t seeing any new patients...”
“I checked your website, my choices are between Dr. Tomberg and Dr. Worth, so my choices are kinda...limited, being transgender and seeking a transgender friendly physician.”
That must have worked as she stated, “Well, she is accepting only new transgender patients...I need to give the Transgender Department a call, can I put on hold?” I agreed as there was still hope. If I took the PA, I would have landed an appointment on April 22nd, with the doctor, I expect no earlier then May, as most physicians only book 3 months in advance. “Sorry for the delay; so I passed on your information and they will be giving you a call on Monday to schedule an appointment, after Dr. Worth’s staff have a moment to review your request...”
What does that even mean? I take the news as one step closer...Monday is only three days away! I agree to the terms and when I hang up, I can’t believe I did it. I called Virginia Mason, (in the book I went to Bainbridge in person) and might get to see Dr. Worth...we will see...

Wrath of the Dragon 2018 Gen Con campaign art
The 50th Anniversary of Gen Con in 2017 had just wrapped up it seemed when the following photo was posted on GenCon’s facebook page on September 26, 2017 when they were giving away 4-day passes for GenCon 2018 nearly a year in advance.

Wow! Super exciting!... and then... nothing. Not a word. The official campaign artwork was shown a year early and then not another whisper of this art would arrive again. I mean, sure... the artwork was on their website banner...

and you could buy the merch...
get the buttons...
get the enamel pin...

and of course the program...

But all of that was right at the time of the convention. It all was just sort of... Welp, it’s GenCon time again... here’s the free stuff with this new campaign art we never... ever... EVER hyped up all year long.” No fanfare, Hell I don’t even know if they bothered even mentioning Steve’s name in all that time, which is super-weird since they loved what he did for them over the previous three years so much that they broke patterns and asked him to do a fourth piece.
I’m going with “they’re spoiled.”
But enough about the client. Let’s look at the art instead. And while we’re at it let me give what little fanfare I can. Remember, the artwork wasn’t named or shown in it’s original aspect ratio isolated like this, ever.
This is the first time it has been posted anywhere!
Now, Steve admitted some reservations about this piece when he shared it with me. I can respect that. And I kind of understand. I never got a good look at the artwork during the year, but there was always something slightly off about it. Now that I see it more clearly I know what it is. It must be a function of the lighting but the character on the tower and the dragon seem like two completely different pieces and one is stamped onto the other.
But everything else is in place and done very well. You know why I like it? Because it reminds me of the game of D&D in a very direct way. You know that scene in The Princess Bride where the grandfather has to go back and find his place in the book and the movie scans through the scene with the shrieking eels? I feel like this has a similar impact. I can imagine the DM describing the scene, it is added together as it is described, and until that next die roll the moment is frozen.
There is an innocence and wonder behind the artwork that defies my attempts at critical analysis. The armor is perfect, unfazed by long travels and trials. The tower must have the smallest spiral staircase ever made. This is a strategic nightmare our hero has decided to find herself in. But none of it matters. This is a defining moment near the end of a long night of gaming. The scene before the commercial break. It’s cool and exciting and I wonder what will happen next.
Let me put it this way. Not everyone who sees this picture is an art-major looking to dismantle it. Some of the audience are little kids just getting onto the RPG train for their first ride and learning how to imagine the most awesome things they can for the first time. This, I feel, is very well suited for them. And an excited child is possibly the best audience you can have.

Paltalk messenger free download - Paltalk, Paltalk Sharer, Yahoo Messenger, and many more programs. Paltalk Express For Mac Free Downloads - 2000 Shareware periodically updates software information and pricing of Paltalk Express For Mac from the publisher, so some information may be slightly out-of-date. You should confirm all information before relying on it. Download and install Paltalk on a Mac. Windows firewall settings. Your 'Pals' (contact list) 4. The pal list or contact list. Add new Pal (contact).
Find at communicate with friends all over the internet with this great Windows chat and IM tool. Let's face it, Skype is cool. Video calling is pretty awesome and it seems that any Tom, Dick or Harry with a webcam can get online and talk to loved ones and reconnect with friends. This is one of the reasons why I like PalTalk. It’s a video chat and IM client for Windows.
With PalTalk, you can find and connect with over 4M different users all over the web. It has over 4000 different video chat rooms. With it, you can connect with friends from Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ.
PalTalk soars past Skype with its SuperIM mode. SuperIM allows you to audio and video chat with up to 10 different people. Skype only allows you to video chat with one person at a time, unless you've paid for its premium, Group Video Calling feature. You can also use PalTalk to host and record your own live, web-cam show. No other experience, software or equipment is required. Pros: small, easy to use, free, SuperIM mode allows for video chat with up to 10 people
Cons: Chat rooms aren't the best places for kids, no parental controls
Conclusion: PalTalk is an interesting program, and it does much of what other, more mainstream apps do. Its ability to allow you to video chat with up to 10 different users at the same time, lifts it above Skype in many ways. However, its chat rooms made me a bit nervous, as I'm not always eager to video chat with people that I don't personally know. Its lack of parental controls also made me uncomfortable, especially for those thinking of installing this on a centralized computer where younger kids may be using the PC.

Well, It's Time I started these 'Best of' Reviews for what Animated thing had Happened this Year, and Now I'm ready for it, and for me, I think that 2017 was a great Year for Cartoons on TV (and one on the Net), and here are my Reviews on why.
Ben 10(2016 series) – Although the Show was Made and Released in 2016 at other Foreign territories, It finally got a Release in the US in 2017. And some Folks might say that some reboots aren’t very too Bright (and I would agree on TTG and/or PPG 2016), But I find this to be a Nerve Calming excitement, some of the Character Designs/Re-Designing look Cute & Likable to Me. And the One Thing that gets me Fired up for this Series is that some Artists I know worked on this Program, like Mr. Ryan Krammer(Uncle Grandpa, & SpongeBob's 'Food Con Castaways' episode), Ms. Monica Ray(Harvey Beaks, Magic Children Doing Things) as Storyboard Artists & additional Writers& Mr. Colin Heck(Legend of Korra, Harvey Beaks) as Supervising Director. And It was Wonderful to hear Ms. Jessica DiCicco(Lynn & Lucy Loud) voicing a Different-looking FrightWig, who the Character was previously voiced by Cree Summer in the Original Series. But believe me, I remember seeing the Original Ben 10 series along with Alien Force, but didn’t quite go thru the Rest of the Series until the Reboot came. Even the Original villains of this Show look so Cute (except for Billy Billions), which that Cuteness also goes to the re-Designing of the other Villains from the Original ‘Ben 10’ series, and the More appearance I’ve ever seen from a Villain is Steam Smythe (voiced by Roger Craig Smith of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ & ‘Regular Show’).
Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer – Quite an Interesting Show, and I bet many people thought that the Program reminded them of ‘Uncle Grandpa’, so Keep in Mind, Most of the Artists & Writers who worked on this Series previously worked on ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ & ‘Uncle Grandpa’. Even the Show’s Creator Mr. Aaron Springer voicing Billy almost sounds like Paul Rugg of 'Freakazoid', 'Pig, Goat, Banana, Cricket', & 'Secret Mountain Fort Awesome'.
Samurai Jack(Season 5) - I truly Enjoyed watching 'Samurai Jack' when I was Young, this Program along with 'Courage the Cowardly Dog', 'Juniper Lee', & 'Chowder' are Probably the only Good Old Cartoon Network Programs that I give Full Circle to in my Childhood. After the "Jack and the Baby" episode, the show went into a Deep Cliffhanger, and I truly Sympathize the Great Hero Jack for it, But Twelve Years Later, a New Season had Finally cometh, with the Show's Original Creator Mr. Genndy Tartakovsky coming to Ex. Produced the series after some Great Work back at Sony Pictures Animation(Hotel Transylvania films, & that Popeye Test Footage). And Instead of the Program being a-little Lighthearted like the Past Seasons with just Slime, Oil & Robotic Guts, and Major Boo-boos, the New Season 5 now airing on Adult Swim has moved to a Darker Tone, which I like as much as 'Return to Oz', 'Over the Garden wall', & 'the Black Cauldron', with some major Blood, Profanity, and some Grown-Up jokes put into it. And it was a Surprised to see some Old Characters that I recognize to make some Cameos in that one episode(or few), such as the Woolies, Demongo, and the Ravers, the Robots and their Robo-Samurai, and the "Jump Good" Monkey man & his Tribe. And some Fresh New Voices came in by Surprise, such as Mr. Chris Parnell & Keegan Michael Key in some Episodes. And I was Lucky to film the Final Confrontation between Jack & Aku during the Premiere of the Series Finale for Instagram. And did I nearly weep during the Part that Now that Aku is Gone, Ashi will Never be Born in the Future(because of the Space Timing Continuum), and I got to say, Ashi was a Cute Character that I truly Sympathize because of her Dark Past & People Torturing her back then, and I like her Voice Actress, the Legendary Ms. Tara Strong (Powerpuff Girls, My Little Pony, Ben 10, & Chowder). And even since Aku's Original voice actor Mr. Mako passed away back then, I say that Mr. Greg Baldwin really did a Good Job impersonating Mako voicing Aku, just like he did with Iroh of 'Avatar: the Last Airbender' & 'Legend of Korra', almost sounded like If Mako aged Puberty. I would say I'm Gonna Miss this Show, just like how I'll miss Chowder, Regular Show, and soon Uncle Grandpa.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil: Battle for Mewni /SvtFoE Season 3– To come Clear, I only watched the First Four Stories of that TV Movie Special, from “Return to Mewni” to “Marco and the King”, Because during the Further Episodes there was an Artist whose Career I clearly dislike, Tyler Chen of ‘Clarence’, ‘Fish Hooks’, ‘Pickle & Peanut’ & the Overrated Bravest Warriors minisode “drama Bug”, and that’s why I never made it to the Ending point, But I do read Perfectly that Star won the Battle against the Vile Toffee, and she got her Wand Redesigned. But what I can tell you that one of my Favorite Episodes from that so Far is “Moon the Undaunted”, and I gotta say that Eclipsa, Queen of Darkness is one of my Most Favorite Characters from the show so far. As for the Rest of Season 3 so Far, I’ve only watched Episodes that are NNOT directed by Chen, cuz remember when I said I don’t like his Career, but my Most Favorite Episodes out of Season 3 so Far is ‘Stranger Danger’, ‘Lint Catcher’, & ‘Trial by Squire’. Also, Despite having appeared in the 2016 episode "Page Turner", I like Hekapoo's appearance in the 2017 episode "Running with Scissors", which is One of my Most Favorite Episodes of Season 2.
The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos - I really Enjoyed this Half-Hour Special of ‘the Loud House’, the New Characters there seemed Likable/Lovable unlike the Unlikable/Hate-able ones in Royal Woods where some Folks aren’t that Disgusting as Hell(Funny Business, Cereal Offender), and It’s also a Good Episode where no Sister Siblings were Complete & Utter jerks(Sleuth or Consequences, a Novel Idea), Even what surprised me Completely is that this was the First Thing in a Kids’ Cartoon to showcase a person with Down-Syndrome, and believe me, I felt Really Disappointed on how they were Portrayed in Adult Cartoons, Mostly *COUGH*Family guy*COUGH*. But in a Kids Cartoon, they were Treated Properly with Good Respect. And the Character Rosa reminds me of Mrs. Claus/Mama from Rankin/Bass’ ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ for some Wacky Reason, “Eat, eat, EAT”. And I still Love the RonnieColn Fandom Completely, that one LH Episode “Back Out There” almost Ruined some Things, and that Led me to have Mixed to Negative Feelings for Lincoln’s Friends Clyde, Rusty, Liam, Zach. So I would say that ‘the Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos’ is a Fun-Filled Episode that I could watch Multiple Times, It’s got Cute & Funny moments, some Heart-Warming Drama, and some Great Entertainment when the Alley Cats run amuck in the Casagrande apartment.
OK K.O! Let’s be Heroes – This Show has become a Great New addition to the Grand CN, It was created by Mr. @ianjq, who was previous storyboard supervisor & storyboard revisionist of ‘Adventure Time’, Writer & Story Artist for ‘Secret Mountain Fort Awesome’, voice of Wallow of ‘Bravest Warriors’, & developer, co-executive producer, supervising director, storyline writer & storyboard artist for ‘Steven Universe’, and I really like him Voicing Rad & other Characters such as Darrell & Crinkly Wrinkly in the K.O. program. It was based off a short Pilot episode ‘Lakewood Plaza Turbo’ back in 2013, in that Great Year of Discoveries along with other pilots for ‘Steven Universe’, ‘Over the Garden Wall’, & ‘Clarence’, and that was a Time when I was also Fascinated with Disney’s Nine old Men and their Work/Book ‘the Illusion of Life’, and watching that Awesome Documentary on Cartoon Network’s ‘Next Generation of Animation’, I will always accept New Cartoon Network shows like ‘Adventure Time’, ‘Regular Show’, ‘Uncle Grandpa’, ‘Over the Garden Wall’, ‘Steven Universe’, & ‘We Bare Bears’ into the Cartoon Society. But as for ‘OK K.O.’ , the seems pretty Wonderful, It has a Blend of 1970’s Obscure Anime looks into the Western Animation looks, and How they have some Classical Cartooning Principles(Funny Cartoon Noises, Jokes & Gags) into the Modern Day Greatness. Even some of the characters seemed likable, Mostly on either Lord Boxman(voiced by the Great Jim Cummings), some of the Villainess Characters that the Heroes might met(Professor Venomous, Cosma, & Mr. Cardsley), and even some of the Main Good Characters, especially the Ones I also Sympathize like K.O., Rad, Enid, Dendy, Carol, & Mr. Gar, and I gotta say that Character Crinkly Wrinkly is the Funniest character that I’ve ever seen. I think it was Good that I first get to watch the Series when It was On-Demand before it aired on actual TV, but I have yet to see it’s 2013 Pilot episode along with the Rests that Aired on 2013, But I do know that it had a Mobile Game back then (though I did not Download it or played it) and a Series of Shorts by other Animation Studios, but I haven’t watch them because I am Never a huge fan of SCIENCE SARU and I’m Not too certain about Studio Yotta. But I gotta say also, This Show is a Fanstastic Experience on the Grand CN, Filled with Precious Heart-Warming episodes with Good Life Lessons like How to handle your own Duties as an Employer or how Great your Boss can be (‘Legends of Mr. Gar’), or If you Try not to Spoil your life by being a Self-Proclaimed Selfish ‘Cool Kid’ like Brat, you should have a More Focused Future ahead of you, even without going to Jail (‘We’ve Got Pests’), and the Show had some Crazy Developments such as Enid & Rad used to being a Couple (‘Second First Date’), and Enid being a Witch and being in a Family of Halloween-Themed Characters (‘Parents Day’). Plus the shows got a Good crew, Like the Program's Supervising Director Toby Jones, who Previously worked on 'Regular Show', and one of the Show's Story folks Dave Tennant, previously does some Stories for Pete Browngardt Cartoons, Which I think makes it Better for Me.
Pickle Rick – Why not, It’s “PICKLE RIIIICK!!!!”, I thought I would pass on this, But eventually won my Heart, don’t ask why, but Things just happen like that.
The Summoning - I just Discovered this while browsing on the internet probably from Fan-Art on DA, and I watched it on Youtube, and I gotta say, this Cartoon is Really Cute, Funny, & Creepy at the same time. The Main Characters seemed Lovable, and I mean Claire & Edgar, the Bunny Character is hugely Funny in a way, Though I feel Terribly Bad for the characters accidentally eating some things like Eating some Dandruff from a Big Head Island which Claire thought it was Dirt, and Eating Poop which Edgar thought it was Chocolate. But to make Matters Better for the Cartoon, Celmation Hero Ms. Natasha Allegri(Bee & Puppycat, Fionna & Cake) worked on the short as Director, Story Artist, & Character Designer, WHAT A HERO!!! And the Animations/Celmation was done by Digital eMation inc., the Celmation Team behind ‘Ok K.O. Let’s be Heroes!’ & the Season 5 of ‘Samurai Jack’.
The Movies of 2017 & Probably some on Video Games should be made soon.

I don't know if I've ever had an audio book, out any other book for that matter, that was so detailed and complete in regards to selling, influence and persuasion. Jordan Belfort is a genius in the way he connects with people and how he teaches the system that he used to make millions on Wallstreet. Hats off to you, sir!

Like I mentioned last week, we’re off this week until the new year, or New Year, so here are a collection from a bunch of our Onyx Path crew thinking back on the year that was.
From Mirthful Mike Chaney, art director and graphic designer and the cursing, cantankerous, combustible, engine that keeps Onyx Path going:
The Goodz:
Pugmire is not only out but being well received. We delivered a beautiful book to the backers and marketplace… and I think we got it out ahead of schedule as well… despite making 60+ corrections at the press proof (again, sorry about that Rich).
We successfully KS’d two non WW related IPs this year… Monarchies of Mau and Cavs of Mars.
Exalted is moving again. We have delivered a dozen critters… some NPCs… a Jumpstart and the first real supplement to fans (although the PoD version will hit in 2018).
We wrapped up a couple of lingering KS’s … namely V20 Dark Ages and Book of the Wyrm.
I survived making Beckett’s Jyhad Diary.
We successfully KS’d our first CofD 2e line… and it did really well. CTL 2e outdid every CofD KS that has come before… and that gives me hope that HtV2 will also do well this year.
The Badz:
Losing Stew. Still having trouble really processing that one.
Artist losses earlier in the year. We ended up losing a chunk of non WoD/CofD artists in Q1 and Q2. None of it was our fault… some artists went onto bigger and better projects (which is a good thing). Then we had those who decided that they wanted double their original rate…
From Monica Valentinelli, our marketing consultant par excellence and an outstanding freelance writer and developer:
2017 was significant for OP because this was the first year we released a creator-owned game, Pugmire, while focusing on delivering what we promised via our Kickstarters. We were also able to strengthen our partnership with White Wolf, and Beckett’s Jyhad Diary is one title that is representative of that collaborative effort. This year we also met a lot of new fans who’d never heard of Onyx Path before, and because we planned for bigger outreach with our expanded catalog this year we were able to quickly get the word out about what we do. That, coupled with new additions to our staff, means we’ve been able to adapt and take advantage new opportunities more quickly than we could have with fewer people. It was definitely a year of both change and growth, and we take the lessons we’ve learned to plan for 2018.
Fast Eddy Webb, Pugmire creator and our “Develop-At-Large”, and the guy that kept White Wolf alive through the CCP years, has some thoughts:
Wow. 2017 has been a rollercoaster ride of emotion, in both the worst and best ways possible. On a personal level, it’s been a chaotic year. Two international moves (one from the US to Ireland, and one back) hammered at my zen like a stubborn nail in a plank of wood. As much as we loved living in the Republic of Ireland, it was clear that now isn’t the right time for us as a family to make that move, which is why we’re now back in the States. Further, we lost our beloved Murray (inspiration for Senechal Murra of Pugmire) to a heart attack in late September. I’m writing this months later, and I still sometimes have nightmares about that night. I still miss him terribly.
It hasn’t been all doom and gloom, however. For one thing, living in Europe for six months was amazing. I got the chance to meet a number of Irish fans and peers while I was here and at conventions like Gaelcon. Further, I reconnected with my English friends at Dragonmeet in Hammersmith, London. I visited some amazing places during my time here, and picked up some idioms that will probably stay lodged in my vocabulary for years. Oh, and I gained an appreciation for Jameson and Smithwick’s.
But most of all, 2017 was the year when Pugmire went from being a thing in my head to a real, serious product line. The RPG came out on time in both PDF and physical copies, and it has already got a lot of positive comments at Gen Con and PAX Unplugged. More people asked for my autograph and my picture at this years Gen Con than in the past five years combined. Plus I got to hear so many great stories about people’s dogs — it’s like hearing about your character, but with dogs, which makes it better.
And we laid the groundwork for a great 2018. Everything from small-but-important strategic projects (like the Pugmire jumpstart) to big-and-exciting releases (like the Canis Minor community content program) will really help take Pugmire to the next step. Plus we’re hard at work on adding to the world of Pugmire, with products such as Monarchies of Mau and Fetch Quest.
Finally, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a new edition of a beloved game next year… but that’s a conversation for another time. (Here’s a hint, though: It’s not a game Onyx Path has ever published before!)
Yes, 2017 was a rollercoaster of emotion. Obviously, the loss of Murray and the stress of two major moves hit me and my family hard. But we know deep down that Murray and all of his friends continue to live on in the kingdom of Pugmire. And knowing that the game he inspired has reached so many hearts besides mine means the world to me. For that, I’ll always remember 2017 as the year when I truly understood what Pugmire could be.
Here’s Mighty Matt McElroy, our Operations Manager as well as an encyclopedia of WoD knowledge, and a maestro of RPG biz insider info:
2017 was my first year full time with Onyx Path, although I’d been a freelancer as a developer, editor, writer, and a few other things ever since OPP started. It has been quite a year. We launched several Kickstarters, continued our efforts to release at least one new product every Wednesday, attended a lot of conventions (more on that later) and have big things planned for next year. Some highlights:
Pugmire and Cavaliers of Mars:
I might be a bit biased as these are new games from Onyx Path, but I’m really excited we released Pugmire and had a great kickstarter for Cavaliers of Mars this year. Great games designed by awesome people.
Conventions:
Onyx Path went to more conventions this year than any year previously. Our year always starts with a great time at Midwinter Gaming Convention in Milwaukee, WI. We had a huge booth with White Wolf at Gen Con 50, and then again we shared space with them at PAX Unplugged last month. We also dropped by GameHoleCon for the first time this year with lots of Scarred Lands, Exalted, and Pugmire demos.
We’re reviewing and revising our convention strategy for the team and likely making some changes based on how this year’s shows went (so be sure to let us know what your favorite conventions are).
And finally, just myself, your fearless leader, RichT:
2017 was very much a transitional year for Onyx Path. We had planned out a five-year plan and 2016 was our sixth year of publishing, so we started adjusting what we were doing and with who. We no longer needed to be the heralds refuting that “White Wolf Is Dead!”, as the newly formed White Wolf was already letting people know that they were around.
We instead were able to start focusing our message on the amazing worlds we’re creating projects for; the WW licensed games of WoD, Chronicles of Darkness, and Exalted, our creator-owned game lines of Pugmire and Cavaliers of Mars, and our own settings of Scion and the Trinity Continuum, as well as our newest game: They Came From Beneath the Sea! All three powered by our new Storypath System.
We adopted the motto of “Many Worlds, One Path“, and it’s true!
We actually went light on Kickstarters in 2017, really just ones that extended the kinds of projects we can do because it was important to stretch that capability, but concentrated on fulfilling as many of the KSs we had already run as possible. We also extended our reach into Amazon with our fiction waves, and into the Apple and Google stores with the Onyx Dice Rolling App.
Pugmire led the way into selling our books in stores for the first time, and we started a relationship with Studio2 to make that happen in a way that makes sense for us, not just to get into stores willy-nilly.
Internally, we saw some developers leave for various reasons, and new devs step up and handle things, while we began to work with Eddy as a full-time freelance developer who could help out any dev that needed a hand. Which he did, in order to get several projects moved forward. Jammin’ James Bell was brought on to run our Kickstarters, and trained up fantastically in 2017 in preparation for a strong raft of KSs in 2018.
Beyond the business strategies, it was a tough year for everyone and a lot of our creative teams struggled with creating excellent projects while being buffeted left and right by the winds of life (and social media). Onyx just tried to stay on course, not get get overwhelmed by, oh, everything going on in the real world and even our unreal world of tabletop gaming, and to avoid getting embroiled in internet conflict.
I’d like to think we did well, and that we’re sailing into 2018 stronger and better set up to create awesome new projects than we were this time last year. There’s some things I would have liked to have done better, but I’ll tackle those items in a post after the New Year.
Thanks everyone for facing front like the true-believers that you all are, because we just can not do what we do without all of you…I’ll talk to you next year!

Come Over
As this goes up, if I did this right, I’ll probably be back soon. I went to Entranced last week and you can see all kinds of Entranced stuff at the Entranced 2017 link. If you’ve never been to an event like this, here’s what you need to know.
1. They’re not lying - the people really are friendly.
I’m bad at small talk. Specific talk, sure - I can tell you how great your class was, or that you’re a fantastic writer or researcher. (Also other topics if I get that we’re on the same page.) If you’re generally talking on-topic, people are super duper chatty about this kind of fun. I wanted to talk to more of you, and hopefully I still can. (Or you still can.)
What surprised me the most (and it shouldn’t have) is that before I even knew who anybody was, so many people reminded me of people I knew and like elsewhere from life. As Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds once sang, “We’re all the same.”
2. If you set your expectations right, it’s a good deal.
Your cash gets you about six hours of programming per day for three days plus one meal plus some stuff at the con suite and paying for badges/meeting rooms/snacks/bling. When it comes to travel and hotel rooms it’s a different beast. If you’re local, it is a valuable experience just to plop your bottom in a chair and watch what happens. Even if you’re not a hypnotist or a switch, you’ll probably learn a little about the material and a couple of things yourself. “Oh crap, I’m into it.” This you. You’re that.
3. Bring a Buddy, Take a Buddy.
Someone to check in with - and to make sure you get out of the hotel room if you have a habit of shutting yourself in - is a good idea.
4. Establish a Tumblr
If you’re reading this and don’t have a Tumblr, make a Tumblr. Like some posts, post a few things, ask some questions. The show was infinitely improved by having read posts by so many of you, or chatting with you, because if nothing else I can say “Oh, that person is nice, let’s go see what they are like in person.” They’re all nicer in person. Maybe not me, but everybody else definitely is. You’ll get access to the secret meta-con with things like event planning, secret regional snack-treats, and maybe even opportunities to be the hypnotized audience plant. Also, it’s possible people will recognize you from your posts - this happened a lot. I saw it.
Also if you start a Tumblr I’ll have something to read.
5. Volunteer?
I almost volunteered, mostly because it’s less awkward to be in a situation where your position demands communication for a reason rather than trying to come up with a reason to say hello. I talked to a few volunteers and it seemed they had similar inclinations - you get to meet people, see awesome things, and not get paid for it. Well, maybe you get a hotel room or a ticket, that’s something tangible.
6. Blog Monster
If you’re up to it, write as you go - no matter how awesome the panels were, you can only sit and watch people talk for so long before things begin to blur together, especially if you see the same presenters more than once because their presentations are so good. People go to these things because they want to know about things, or do things, or learn how to do things. It’s a handy excuse to get people to talk to you, or for you to talk to them.
7. Share What You Know
We heard some interesting stories about presenting, or not presenting, leading up to the event and also at the event. These communities live or die by generating awareness and spreading new and interesting things. The phenomenon of social media can influence a show immensely, thanks in part to a recent clip of how to do hair-pulling you saw a lot of hair-pull inductions and hair play stuff. We saw polyglots talk up hypnosis in multiple languages. When Dommestic and I were talking to people we had a few questions on if we might teach a class in the future*, which I have to admit got the wheels turning. I will gladly bore a room of people for an hour.
The next event getting all the buzz from the cool kids is Charmed (which is next year). I’ve been to lots of (not remotely sexual) gatherings for interests in the past, and I’d say this is on par with them plus or minus the fact you’re only slightly more likely to see someone walking around in their underthings or without pants once or twice.
* - I don’t know when/if we’ll pop into another event. A Nova Pro 100 class was suggested but we’re still putting it through its paces, we’re new to this. I had ideas for other things I could do that would probably not interest anybody but me.

KiScon 2017 Update #5

Just over 50 days to go! Woohoo! (Also: Yikes!) We’ve had a flurry of sign-ups in the last couple of weeks from attendees wanting to get in before the final discount ended on the membership fee. A reminder to any of you who knows someone who’s thinking of signing up, the KiScon registration cut-off is Friday August 11th. We cannot accept new members or upgrades after this date. This is because we need to give the hotel the final catering numbers and to allow us to make final plans.
Over 50 members voted on their preferred panels – thanks for taking time out to do that. Voting is now closed and we've put together a draft schedule. Once finalized, we’ll give you details on how to access it when we send out update #6.
Star Trek Las Vegas
Are you attending the Star Trek Las Vegas convention on August 2-6? If you will be there and might be interested in a K/S meetup, please let us know by emailing us at [email protected]!
Convention Schedule
Thank you to everyone who voted on the program items for the convention! If you volunteered to moderate any panels, you should have heard from us with a draft schedule. If you have not received an email from us, please get in touch! If you're not able to run the panels we scheduled for you, please let us know by July 31st.
Special Panel Announcement
We’re pleased that Dr. Lucy Neville (aka Pouxin) will join us via Skype from Barcelona on Saturday morning, giving us an update on her project looking at women and m/m erotica (with a focus on explicit m/m slash).
Science in the Movies
By popular demand, Rhaegal will be repeating her "Science in the Movies" talk from Shore Leave during the Dead Le Matya Party on the Sunday of the convention, at 4.30pm. If you want to catch this talk, please make your travel arrangements accordingly.
Goodie bags
Are you planning to donate items to the ‘goodie bags’ that attending members will receive? If yes, can you get in touch and let us know at [email protected]. We’ll be able to give you the final number after the August cut-off.
Raffle
We will be holding a raffle, with tickets available throughout the weekend, with proceeds going to the con charity (to be voted on by members at the Opening Ceremony). If you’d like to donate items to the con raffle, please get in touch to let us know. Ideal raffle prizes include Trek-related memorabilia, licensed collectables, posters/photos, handcrafts/jewelry, etc. Any K/S-related art donations will likely go into the art auction: https://www.kiscon.org/art.php
Dealers, Bring and Buy, Sell-4-U
Dealers will be located in the Rec Room and you can operate according to your own timetable. If you’d like to register as a dealer, please email us and we’ll provide you with a table.
Bring & Buy sessions will be scheduled several times throughout the weekend for those of you who have a number of items to sell at the con, but also want to attend most of the panels.
Sell-4-U is for those of you who have only one or two items to sell. We’ll have one table for them all at each of the Bring & Buys, and as long as they’re correctly labelled with your name, and priced, one our volunteers will take care of transactions on your behalf.
Hotel rooms
We’ve been advised by the hotel that they have no more double rooms. If you haven’t already booked your hotel room, please don’t delay. Remember to book through the KiScon website to get the con rate. If you have any difficulties booking your room, please let us know.
Art show and auction update from Liz
Can you believe it? KiScon is around the corner and although we have a nice art show already, I'm greedy and want more art!
Looking at your current Kirk/Spock art and want some new pieces, but don't know what to do with the old ones?
Have you down-sized and your favorite pieces are now in storage? (I know that feeling!)
Did you move onto another fandom (gasp!) but still have a fondness for K/S so you continue to come to the cons (as you should, remember at heart you are a Trek person), but need wall space for the others?
Then think about giving them a new home with a new fan who would love them as much as you have over the years. Bring it to KiScon! You can sell your old favorites and get some spending money, or donate your proceeds to the con charity.
All art MUST be in good condition; think if it's in the condition YOU would want it to be in if you were purchasing it to hang on your wall. While they don't need to be framed, matted would be nice and if possible shrink wrapped, basically, it needs to be clean, unwrinkled (no bent corners), and protected.
The control sheet can be found on our website (https://www.kiscon.org/art.php), I ask that you fill it out before submitting your art to the artshow. Leave the control code empty, I will assign that.
See you September 15th!
Vid show update from Lari
Amok Time Reloaded – the KiScon vid competition is happening! The con is taking place to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the airing of Amok Time – an episode that blessed us with footage of epic proportions and can be found in so many K/S vids already that it ranks easily among the most recognizable and even over-vidded scenes.
And this is where our competition comes into play:
We want you, dear vidder, to take this over-vidded footage and/or its tropes, and remix and transform them to your heart’s content.
A prize will be offered for the winning Amok Time Reloaded entry, as decided by the attending convention members. And don't forget our regular vidshows are also taking place and awaiting your submissions! For complete rules and technical instructions, see our vid show page at https://www.kiscon.org/vid.php or contact @larissabernstein.
We are still accepting submissions to our vid shows - premieres, older stuff, everything!!! Send in your fanworks and help make the shows as awesome as possible!! We are especially hoping for more entries to our Amok Time Reloaded competition! Scare us, surprise us, make us laugh or cry!
Deadline for vid submission (preferably by Dropbox or similar download link): 15 Aug 2017. We cannot accept submissions at the convention.
