The Best Items to Have Ready Before Welcoming Baby Home
The third trimester is a busy time. You’re preparing to welcome your little one and trying to get everything ready, which means you have to order everything you need before your little one arrives. Ordering baby products like a baby sleep monitor and parent-friendly subscriptions online is easier than ever. All that helpful technology may give you peace of mind after your baby arrives.

Stock the Changing Table with Diapers & Wipes
Stock up the changing table with everything you need for the first few weeks, and maybe consider a subscription for recurring diaper and wipe deliveries. These must-haves are easily missed, but preparing and placing an order online ahead of time will make a huge difference when it’s time to bring your baby home.
Invest in a Smart Baby Monitor
A smart baby monitor is an excellent purchase for new parents. A complete system comes with a baby cam for ultra-clear visuals and offers advanced features like a smart sensor attached to an ankle band for the baby to wear while sleeping. This kind of device can track vital information, including heart rate, oxygen saturation, and external skin temperature, giving parents an idea of how well their baby sleeps. All-in-one systems also act as a baby temperature monitor with a hub that measures the humidity and temperature of the room and includes a nightlight to help you create the perfect sleep environment as your little one snoozes. The best ones also offer two-way communication and sleep sounds and lullabies.

Sign Up for a Live Advice Subscription
If you’re looking for extra support during this new phase of life, you can sign up for a subscription for one-on-one help with maternal-infant experts. These educated professionals can help you navigate this early time in parenthood so that you feel more confident in your decisions. They are not a replacement for regular appointments with your pediatrician and lactation consultant, but they can provide helpful advice.
Set Up a Meal Delivery Service (for the Parents)
No matter how much planning and prepping you do, there will be days when you want a fresh meal or run out of freezer space. Don’t wait until that moment to sign up for a meal subscription service; do it now. You can choose the number you want per week, so it doesn’t have to be an everyday thing. It’s just enough to get you through a tough evening or lunch hour.
Get a Head Start on Playtime with a Baby Activity Mat
Playtime is pretty short with a newborn, but you can use the activity mat as a flat, comfortable surface for your baby to rest if you want to exercise or eat a quick meal. As long as you’re keeping an eye on your little one to make sure they’re in a comfortable position on their back without anything covering their face, you can feel good about using it for more than play.
These are great products to buy before your baby even arrives so that you can feel more prepared and confident in your role as a new parent.

Acting as a baby temperature monitor and baby oxygen monitor, the All-In-One Wellness monitor has a Smart Sensor with an Ankle Band, tracking heart rate, external skin temperature, and oxygen saturation levels. You can also see room temperature and humidity readings through the monitor’s hub, which plays soothing sleep sounds and works as a low-stimulation night light and two-way communication center. okay so you killed him now what is the opposite of killing miller?
(this is a prompt)
Hi Zita, it's been 84 years. I wrote something for this finally. There's puns and genuine feelings and baby facts in here, learned firsthand.
-
Miller's been in the same room for the last 6 hours. That was the last time he left to pop down the hall to get water and snacks for his charges. Before that he was back in the room fiddling with the light settings, helping adjust the hospital bed, and reminding nurses and patients of the most recent pain ratings, meds and dosages, and questions. So many questions. Mostly from Roland.
S-IVs don't need as much sleep as normal people, which is a blessing and a curse. It's what got him into this situation.
All hands on deck means all hands on deck when the Infinity picks up a distress signal and responds to a colony-ship abandoned by its AI.
Roland makes sure to express his opinions straight into Jared's ear, but he switches gears when triage happens. They work in tandem with little bickering as the Infinity's numbers swell with their new pick up.
It's a lot of civilian types, entire families with many generations all milling about and a cloud of anxiety over them. Miller can feel the weight of their stares and the burning curiosity Roland exudes as he leans on Miller's Mjolnir to look closer at so many new people.
Children weren't something he'd seen up close before.
He ends up forgoing the helmet given how jumpy they are around him. The results are night and day: he goes from a faceless tool of the UNSC to Jared Miller, awkward guy and newly designated Au Pair.
Cmdr. Palmer would be laughing at him if there was a single motherly bone in her body allowing her within 500 yards of the makeshift maternity ward in this corner of the infirmary.
Miller had also forgone the helmet due to the amount of questions he'd been receiving from all sides. Between the kids, the civilian parents glaring at him, and Roland's unfettered access to his eyes and ears, he wanted a breather from the HUD and proximity alarms as brave tweens and toddlers approached him.
The previous 12 hours had been a deluge of:
"Have you killed any aliens?"
"Spartan Miller, ask that nurse about the new mottling on the baby's skin. It's probably just newborn rash, but you should ask."
"Why are you so tall? Did they give you more bones?"
"Miller, ask to hold the baby, I want to use the armor's sensors to check oxygen levels."
"Do you know Master Chief?"
"Spartan Miller, are you ignoring me?"
"Mister Spartan, can you get us some extra blankets?"
"Can I hold your gun?"
It's 2300 when the extended family of the newborn shuffle off to parts unseen to get some rest and give the new parents space when it happens. The brave faces tire and the frazzled nerves shine through. Technically, Miller is off the clock. He should go recover in his own quarters. He should leave.
He does.
The assemblage bay is a hive of activity. A well oiled machine taking apart its smaller machines and putting them away for future use. Miller feels more human in his ready gear with a shower and a meal in him.
He wanders back into the infirmary and smiles awkwardly at the faces lighting up to see him.
The baby's just been fed and needs swaddling. Mom hasn't slept in close to 48 hours, and her wife is struggling to keep her eyes open from the awful makeshift bench. Cots were elsewhere and this is what they had to work with.
Mom just needs to lay down without worrying about the baby for a half hour till the next nurse comes. Wife just needs to sit down. Miller takes first watch and swaddling duty. He'd seen it done a dozen times over the last day and then some. Make a triangle with the cloth, tuck the arms gently so they don't scratch the face, move the cloth left over and under, the bottom up and over a shoulder and right over left. Secure and warm in hands big enough to dwarf the less than eight pound bundle. Hat affixed to a dark head of hair to retain heat. Tiny features squinch up and relax at the change in pressure and temperature.
Facts from the last day and a half pour over Miller's mind. Support the head and neck. Check for blue around the mouth in case of oxygenation issues. Newborns lose 10% of their weight the first few days. You have to train them to eat, they're used to getting food automatically. The diapers won't be pretty but black tar and brickdust are normal for the first few days.
He stands and sways. Dinosaurs of all colors look back at him from the swaddle. Wife succumbs to sleep with her head pillowed on a jacket and a spare blanket over her. Mom holds a pillow and curls up, too warm in a newborn temperature room. She dozes as Miller sways, squeezes, and shushes the little one. A red face and a small cry let him know it's nearly time to change the diaper. A glance at the clock lets him know the nurse should be there soon. A golden bit of text on one of the panels lets him know that Roland is still hellbent on learning, nagging, and all around being involved in the whole process.
The nurse comes in for Mom's 4 hour check and another round of meds. They help Mom sit up and adjust in the hospital bed while Miller changes the diaper.
He keeps up a steady stream of words at the little squirming bundle. "I know, I know. It's so cold right? Well we'll get you warm in juuust a second."
Miller's grateful for the nurses and the well-stocked bassinet. Diaper changed, baby cleaned, and the tiny squealing human calms from squeaking cries to small grumbles as they shift from upset-red back to healthy pink.
They're so small. It's insane.
Miller's still staring when the nurse approaches to check and prep for another round of feeding and skin-to-skin contact.
"You're a trooper." They say, nodding to Miller.
"Actually I'm a Spartan." He jokes as he goes to wash his hands.
The baby mewls loudly before quieting again.
"Didn't think it was that bad of a joke…"
Mom smiles and the nurse rolls their eyes.
Miller comes back and moves his vigil to the chair in the corner over the next several hours.
It doesn't get any less surreal, but something's shifted.

caregiver whitebeard thoughts 🤍
- his little, one of his crewmates, has their bed in the shared crew rooms but, little or not he never denies them if they request sleeping in his bed in the captain’s quarters.
- he is a large man (literally) so he is more than capable of holding his little, so he always does as it never strains him. to him is little is the size of a baby and when he tells them that they mighr start to feel smaller.
- he isn’t very good with play pretend games but, is much better with straightforward actives like a game that has rules or coloring or story time.
- he would use his devil fruit, in very small/weak bouts to make whatever his little is sitting on shake to play with them.
- his hands are so large that some of their little things are just too tiny for him, he can’t help them with most anything that requires precision but, he will always try his hardest.
- he doesn’t like to keep his oxygen mask or any of his sensors when they are little, he is scared that they will think he isn’t going to be around much longer so he often harms himself in attempts to keep his little happy.
- his little calls him pops while big but, when little calls him dada. he loves it because it is a special title that only his youngest child has for him.
- when they came to him about being a little he was more than ready to be of any help he could be, he had always wanted a family and he loves the one he has but, never had the chance to have a baby. so when he learns a member of his crew regresses and he has the chance to take care of the baby he’s never had he is ecstatic.
- when he has to sit at his desk and do work there he has his little in his lap, just watching him. they are curled up into his stomach with him holding them there with one hand.
- he calls his little his baby and his sweets and is just overall extremly sweet and loving with them.
- when his little is feeling small but, doesn’t want the crew to know they will stay in his room for the day. he will wrap them up in a blanket and hold them all day unless he needs to go grab something for them, he would never make them tell anyone but encourages them to tell their ship doctor, marco just in case.
thats all for now!! i realize this post is kinda short but, i need to update my other blog and my fic so im kinda rushing through them!! im not sure if my requests/asks are on but if they are and you have anything for me feel free to!!!!! i am more than happy to respondd :)

Threshold: live vicariously through me
Neelix, be loathed or beloved cook depending who you ask solves an engineering problem that two engineers and cocky flyboy with daddy issues can’t fix
Successful simulation
Great idea! Give the cocky flyboy pilot an ego boost that he very much doesn’t need by calling saying he’ll be a pioneer like Neil Armstrong or Zephram Cochrane! I don’t foresee that being an issue
It is an issue in the next scene
Cocky flyboy pilot argues with captain about going on the live test. L+Daddy issues+ratio. This scene exists for the sole purpose of telling us Tom has daddy issues and a superiority complex as if we couldn’t already tell
Cocky flyboy exceeds warp 10 on the shuttle they’ve named Cochrane as yet another ego boost to a man who does not need one
Warp ten: achieved. Flyboy: off the long range sensors. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Whoopsies he and the shuttle have materialised on the ship
Sick bay time
My man fucking ascended and existed everywhere and nowhere for a lil bit in an extremely Daniel Jackson From Stargate turn of events
Wow this is a normal episode of voyager so far……. A little goofy, maybe but not terrible
Just kidding he’s having an allergic reaction to water and can no longer breathe oxygen
He’s over sharing about losing his virginity and then randomly screams pepperoni and then demands pizza
Also wants kess to kiss him cuz he thinks he’s gonna die but she can’t breathe the nitrogen air and he dies kissless
KESS KISSES HIS FOREHEAD AFTER HE DIES????????!!?!????!?!!!?
Sike! Once again Inspired by beloved archaeologist, Daniel Jackson, he has come back to life and scared the hologram doctor but he’s losing hair and has another heart
A lower decker is a spy! Subplot that I forgot about
30 seconds of total footage about that so far
Back to Tom Paris Lizard Arc
He’s gross now and he’s snarkier than usual and Is Not Taking This Well and is having a Meltdown™️
Damn he tried to attack the captain and then bounced off the force field like a fly off a windshield
HOLY FUCK HE COUGHED UP HIS OWN TONGUE LMAO
His DNA is just constantly changing on a second by second basis
He’s Enlightened and he MUST leave this ship because “the future is in the past”
They’re gonna shove him in the warp core to fix him (kinda)
THE LIZARD MAN HAS BREACHED CONTAINMENT BITCH!!!!!
He has kidnapped his own captain and is going on a joyride in the shuttle (hehe they’re headed to warp 10 again!!!)
Chakotay is ON THE JOB
The doctor cracked the code: Tom is evolving at rapid speed, proving that salamander is the APEX HUMAN FORM
They’ve located Paris and the captain. They are full salamanders on a jungle planet
awwww cute little baby salamanders!!
and Chakotay LEFT THEM TO FUCKING DIE
Paris and the captain are human again and are now awkwardly talking about their babies
Emotional scene to talk about daddy issues and inadequacies blah blah blah
The end
Final thoughts: I ❤️ salamanders!!!! Also what the fuck!!!!

It started with a bang.
Lots of bad things start with a bang, but this one wasn’t obvious.
A stray meteor hit Five. Wasn’t the first time, doubtful it would be the last, but Brains had built her strong enough to resist the majority of non-dinosaur-extincting rock events.
Most of them.
This one got through.
It was tiny, but it was enough to mess with some critical systems and it had both a worried Scott on the line and Brains jumping up and down as both John and Eos hurried to make repairs.
Virgil asked John to come down, but he chose not to.
Apparently his ‘bird needed nursing and Virgil, if he was honest, could respect that.
He really wished he hadn’t.
Being on the more paranoid end of the spectrum considering International Rescue’s history of getting the not so lucky end of anything, Virgil checked in with his space brother every half hour.
For the next twenty-four.
John was sympathetic until about the eighteen-hour mark. After that, he became snarlier each time Virgil poked him.
“Virgil, the damage has been repaired.”
“Humour me.”
“Why?”
Why? Virgil wasn’t sure, but he was sure that he needed to check on his brother. “Because it is my job.”
“Then maybe you should check your own readings because you are being beyond ridiculous.” And John cut the connection.
Great. He’d pissed John off – never a good thing to do.
But half an hour later, Virgil prodded him again. “John, report.”
“I’m fine, Virgil. Go to bed.”
Virgil peered closer at his brother’s hologram and frowned. “John?”
“What?!”
Virgil’s fingers darted over the sensor readouts from his brother’s spacesuit. “How are you feeling?”
“Annoyed. If you don’t stop this, I’m going to ask Scott to stop you from doing this.”
“Go for it.” He frowned at the oxygen saturation stat. “You sure you are feeling okay? Eos, can you give me an atmospheric reading on Five?” The numbers were all good, but something felt wrong.
Something had his hackles up, but he couldn’t identify what.
“All atmospheric reading are within the expected range, Virgil. John needs his rest, why are you continuing to disturb him?”
He stared at his brother floating far above. “I’m not sure, Eos.”
John rolled his eyes. “Then get back to me when you are.” His brother cut the connection.
Virgil sat back in his father’s chair. Maybe John was right. Maybe he was just edgy because of the meteor collision, a reminder of the brutality of space and his brother’s vulnerability so far above them. Maybe it was time for bed.
He lasted another hour before he commed John again.
“Virgil, whyyyy?”
Again, he ran his fingers over the sensors, again they tried to reassure him everything was okay.
But nothing was okay. Virgil was sure of it.
He just didn’t know what or why.
“I’m coming up.”
John stared at him. “What? Why?”
“Can’t I drop in to see my brother?”
“It’s 3am!”
“I’m a night owl.”
“I’m going to kick your ass, Virg. I’m tired. You’ve been bugging me for hours. Leave me alone!” The comm line cut again.
And Virgil’s hackles hit orbit.
John never called him ‘Virg’.
Ever.
“Eos?”
It took a moment. “Yes, Virgil?”
“Could you please lower the elevator?”
“He doesn’t want to see you.”
“Too bad. I need to check on his health.”
Eos didn’t answer.
“His health is important, Eos.”
Another long moment where Virgil considered waking Alan or Scott.
“Lowering elevator.”
There was no clarity in Eos’ voice as to her opinion but she was doing what he requested and that was all that mattered.
Half an hour and several layers of atmosphere later, Virgil was thankful for whatever sense that set him off.
He found John floating aimlessly in the central hub of Five. Above the vista of the planet, the holographics system was displaying a three-sixty view of family photos.
Scott grinned at him from the east, a baby Allie from the south pole, his father from the north, Gordy dressed in squid-print swimwear to the west and their beloved mother smiled her familiar smile from somewhere near Africa.
Virgil’s own picture took out South America next to Grandma in the South Pacific.
“John?”
His brother startled. “You! What do you want?”
Virgil eyed him. “Eos, can you give me those atmospheric readings again?”
“Yes, Virgil.” She rattled off the necessary numbers.
Unfortunately, they did not match the portable air sensor Virgil held in his hand. “Your readings are incorrect, Eos. Run a diagnostic.”
There was a pause as John continued to frown at him.
“Diagnostic complete. There are no errors in the sensor network, Virgil.”
“There is a contaminant in your air supply, John.”
“So you finally found an excuse for being annoying.” His brother flipped mid-air and stared up at the hologram of their father. “You hear that, Dad? Virgil finally has a reason for driving us all insane!” That last was shouted in Virgil’s direction along with a glare.
Virgil ignored it.
“John, I want you to come down to Tracy Island.”
“Why?” It was belligerence itself.
“Because you aren’t safe up here. And I miss you.”
“How can you miss me when you never leave me alone?!”
Virgil pressed his lips together and hit his comms. “Tracy Island, we have an Alert Gold.” The command would wake Scott and probably the rest of the house. It was an alert designed to help protect their most remote family member.
“You’re kidding.”
“No, John, I’m not.”
And John burst out laughing. “Do you ever hear yourself?”
Virgil didn’t answer.
“Obviously not. Other wise you would be insane by now. Or you would nag yourself to death.”
John didn’t mean it. He was under the influence. At a guess, there might be a leak in the thruster assembly, leaking oxidiser into Five. But why the sensors hadn’t picked it up…
“So are you going to tie me up and strap me to a bed because I don’t meet your standards of what I should be? Trample me until the numbers add up correctly?”
“John, Virgil is trying to help you.” Eos’ voice rang like a bell throughout the station.
John flinched. “So, you’re on his side now?”
“I wasn’t aware Virgil had a side.”
John grunted and glared his brother again. “You’ve infected her with your nagging.”
“We are just concerned about you. You are not yourself.”
His brother closed his eyes and shook his head.
“Thunderbird Five, status?!” Scott’s voice practically screamed a combination of worry and command over comms.
“You told! Dobbed me into big brother so he can nag me, too! Why can’t you all just leave me alone?!” John pushed off from the wall and threw himself towards the exit.
Virgil caught him mid-air.
It was a mistake. John was in his native environment. He flipped and slipped out of Virgil’s grasp. The engineer grabbed at his brother and missed as John used him as a launch point to finally reach the exit.
Before Virgil could regain his equilibrium, John had slammed the airlock shut and sealed him in.
Damnit.
“Eos!”
“Working on it.”
What could be stopping the AI from unsealing an airlock was a growing concern.
Dad glared at him from the ceiling.
“Thunderbird Five, answer me!”
Virgil drew in a breath, thankful for his uniform’s standalone air supply. “There is an atmospheric contaminant present in Five’s life support systems. I’m guessing we have an oxidizer leak from the thruster assembly. John is…not himself. I’m working on it.”
“Do you need Three?” In other words ‘can I come up there and join you before I melt from worry?’
“Give me ten and ask again.” He flicked off comms. “Eos, any luck?”
“I have contained him in his sleeping quarters, but you will need to hurry as he is currently attempting to override my program.” The speaker gave a little squawk and went silent.
“Eos?”
The airlock suddenly hissed open.
Virgil didn’t hesitate. He was through the exit and throwing himself after his brother without a second thought. He grabbed a spare helmet along the way. It was time to end this.
He found John yelling at the ceiling and pulling a control panel out of his shower cubicle. Why he thought that was a productive thing to do, Virgil didn’t know, but since Eos hadn’t said a word since, it was concerning enough.
The airlock to John’s quarters unsealed at his touch and Virgil slipped through, sealing it again behind him.
His brother didn’t look up from what he was doing. “So the brat let you out, did she?”
“John, you need help.”
“What I need is silence. No more nagging from annoying brothers. Didn’t you guys get the hint when I moved up here in the first place? All my life it has been the four of you in my ears, always bugging me. Now I’m in space and I still can’t escape you. Why can’t you leave me alone?!”
Virgil swallowed a sudden lump in his throat. “We care, John.”
“Only enough to satisfy your own concern. Not how I feel having to listen to all your caterwauling.”
He’s not himself. It became a mantra echoing through Virgil’s head, but a little voice asked if it was really the truth.
“I can’t believe that.”
“No, you wouldn’t.” John continued to rip electronics out of the wall of his shower.
“What are you doing?”
“Silencing the dawn.”
“In the shower?”
John finally looked up at him but his smile was eerie. “No better place.”
“Then I’m going to have to stop you.”
His brother snorted. “You can try.”
Virgil didn’t move immediately. Instead, he pulled up a schematic on his HUD and confirmed the wiring behind the shower unit. Most of it was innocuous, but one of the main power distribution relays was nearby and that relay supported the main computer. There was sense in John’s statement, of an extreme kind. Taking out Eos by taking out his Thunderbird.
He had no idea what kind of logic was churning in his little brother’s brain, but he had to stop this. He had to get John’s helmet on his head and his body and brain off the cocktail of whatever was in the air.
Virgil pushed off from the wall and barrelled into him. John saw him coming and leapt ceiling-ward. Virgil anticipated the move and compensated enough to grab his brother around the waist.
Virgil had the brute strength, but John had flexibility. Virgil’s only chance lay in hanging on.
So he did.
And John did not like it.
At all.
“Get off me!”
He struggled, shoving at Virgil’s arms. When that didn’t work, he tried to knee his brother in the gut.
Virgil grit his teeth and in return, wrapped his legs around his slippery space-suited brother and began climbing him inch by inch, to get that damned helmet on his head.
John yelled in his ear. Tried a few moves that Kayo, no doubt, taught him. The bruises were beginning to mount up and yet, Virgil still hung on.
John wasn’t himself.
Not himself.
The proof was in the fact he hadn’t yet really employed the solid and attacker-crippling techniques Virgil knew his brother was fully capable of. Instead, they spun around in a totally uncoordinated tumble hitting walls and furniture until Virgil was able to get enough of a grip on his brother to shove his helmet on his head.
The helmet hung loose as John took the opportunity to jab him in the ribs as a result and for a moment Virgil thought he was going to lose his grip and hence the battle, but he managed an extra push and his brother’s suit engaged, automatically switching to its portable air supply exactly as it was designed to do in an emergency.
Virgil continued to cling to his brother to keep that helmet in place long enough to do its job. It earned him an aching kidney and some creaking ribs, but eventually John stopped struggling and fell quiet. A glance through the plexiglass of his helmet and Virgil found John’s eyes scrunched shut.
“John?” Virgil’s voice was hoarse. His belly had taken a beating, literally. Thank goodness for his baldric and all the equipment that came with it.
“V-Virgil? God, my head.” John groaned, his gloved hand scratching at his helmet.
Virgil let out a breath and drew his brother closer. “It’s okay. You’re going to be okay.” He brought John’s head down to his shoulder and held him safe in his arms. There was a need to grab the medscanner. He…he would do that in a moment. “Tracy Island, can we take you up on that offer of a pick up?”
“Virgil, launching now. What’s your status?” Scott was all worry and clipped syllables.
“We’re okay.” He closed his eyes and rested his forehead on John’s shoulder. “We’re okay.”

if requests are still open, i hope you don't mind writing some comfort headcanons for mc who's ill with olba boys (i'm down with covid again,, its making me kinda sad because its near the holidays). if you're not comfortable write these, its fine!! thank you for writing olba fics and works - they're like a source of comfort to read esp since the game is officially finished 🫶
I hope you feel better, friend!!!
-- Cove is doing the thing where he's freaking out but he's trying not to make this about him, but like he's REALLY freaking out. Especially if it's covid (I know covid isn't a thing in Our Life Land, but he would NOT be well in 2020, or for a while after).
-- He's not concerned in the least that he'll catch it. He'll wear a mask if you ask, but he's more concerned about taking care of you. Literally tell him anything you need and he'll get it/do it. If you feel up to it, you can get some good laughs this way.
-- Gets one of those thermometers that you can just hover over a forehead to check someone's temperature, checks yours constantly, even (especially) while you're sleeping.
-- If you still live at home or nearby, he's having your moms and/or Cliff cook for you. He can heat up some soup, but he's going to be asking for the good stuff for you. If you don't live nearby, he's going to have to get something delivered.
Cove: *barely paying attention to his phone while checking your temperature for the umpteenth time that day* Hey Siri, DoorDash soup.
Siri: I'm sorry, I --
Cove *throws phone out the window*
-- Cove will take care of you diligently with sort of a panicked undertone. Derek will be just as diligent, but as a certified third parent to two baby brothers, this isn't his first rodeo.
-- Guy actually has a notepad on the counter that he's using to monitor your symptoms.
-- He picked up one of those little oxygen sensors too, you know what I mean? Like the little things they put on your finger at the doctor to check your oxygen levels (science). You can get them for your own person use too, and he grabbed one at the pharmacy when he was picking up supplies.
-- If he has to take you to get medical care, he is going to present as calm and collected because he knows that acting like the scared little lovesick boy he is on the inside isn't going to help anything, and he's an expert about pushing his feelings down anyway, so he's had practice!
Nurse: *after listening to Derek give a summary of your symptoms* Wow, you really know your stuff! Are you in healthcare?
Derek: No, this is just who I am as a person.
-- Baxter is a little bit of a mix between the two! He'll pretend to be calm, it's no big deal, you're just sick, you'll be fine. But on the inside, he's giving Clingy Cove a run for his money.
-- Do you guys have those nurse lines where you can call and talk to a nurse and they'll tell you what they advise you to do? Yeah, they get on a first name basis with Baxter during this.
-- He's not sleeping until he's certain you're going to be ok. If you're good and sick for a few days, you are going to have an absolutely unhinged nursemaid looking after you.
You: Baxter, you can go to bed, seriously, it's fine.
Baxter: *dark circles under his eyes, hair a mess, he threw on one of your t-shirts because he stopped being able to work buttons after being awake for so long, he looks absolutely feral and not even remotely in a hot way* I'm all right, darling! Don't worry about me!
-- Will cook for you, is cleaning up everything while you sleep, work can wait. This boy is ANXIOUS, again, especially if its covid. Maybe you might have to have a talk about it when you get to feeling better!

The Real Thing (Final Version)

ao3 link
Jack Nelson x Connor Hawkins Words: 2.2k Genre: Fluff, humor, horror elements Summary: A short one-shot to look at Jack and Connor's lives after the events of My Own, Distant Home, and is a short prologue/teaser to the in-progress sequel. Alternative title: Two fools in love have no idea what genre they're in.

Tall, bright green trees lined the blacktop road, obscuring the path around the upcoming curves but not able to block out the sun on such a clear, summer day. The RV navigated the winding road with ease in Jack’s hands, most recently passing a green interstate sign, “You are now leaving Idaho”, and then the doubly large sign after it where a cowboy on his horse declared “Welcome to Wyoming: Forever West.”
“I think you were more excited to get your CD collection back than your truck,” said Jack as Connor flipped happily through his shoe-box of albums, whose edges were worn down to the cardboard where it had been slid out and back under the bench seat for years.
“The joy is split, for sure. I let the kids keep all the ones they wanted.”
Jack took his eyes off the road long enough to smile back at him, admiring the childish joy on his face as he hunched over the box, thumbing over track lists like he was a teenager again, in a music store for the first time.
Behind their RV, they towed along said truck, a 2000 Toyota Tacoma in what Connor affectionately called “Stacy’s favorite green”, bought brand new for cash the year he left the army. The truck he only drove for a few months before he became a fire lookout at Ironbark, and since then had been driven almost exclusively by Stacy: Connor’s older sister, another deceptively charming blonde with two children under 10 and no one to rely on besides her brother. Twin fuzzy dice in lucky red bounced beneath the rear-view mirror, bleached almost pink from summers at the lake and catching Jack’s eye in the side mirror.
“That was an incredible thing you did, Connor,” he said. “To buy Stacy a car in exchange for getting the truck back, when it was yours to begin with, and I don’t think she would have fought you on wanting to keep it with us.”
“Nah.” He shooed away Jack’s admiration, flipping over the CD in his hand. “I wasn’t gonna leave her with nothing. And it wasn’t like I got her a Mercedes, just a little something for her to get back and forth to the plant and the kids to school. I should be thanking you actually, you’re the one who looked over the engine and told the guy to change the oxygen sensors before we would paid for it.”
Jack just offered a shrug, though he smiled when Connor reached over to nudge his cheek gently with his knuckles.
“What kind of albums do you have, Jack? I think we’ve listened to nothing but the radio since we left Washington.”
“I like the radio,” he said matter-of-factually. “It’s got NPR, weather, every—THING! Connor, no.” He yelled (squeaked) in alarm when Connor began rummaging through the glove compartment, searching for evidence that he was fibbing. Curse the RV for being so wide, he risked swerving if he reached far enough to slam the lid closed. Meanwhile, smiling and completely unbothered, Connor continued to snoop.
“What do we have here? Oh, Jack. Jackie, baby, what are these?” He grinned in triumph to hold up a handful of CDs: his partner’s most private feelings in rhythm and prose. “Is this what you listened to before you picked me up? Tracy Chapman, Bobby Caldwell—Jackie? Blue-eyed soul?”
Jack’s red cheeks approached their smoking point, hands tight on the steering wheel. If Connor squinted, he might see steam rising from his collar beneath the tight line of his lips. “Don’t make fun of me, Connor, please.”
“I would never, Jack,” he said earnestly, all whiskey and warmth as he popped open one of the cases and began to decipher the RV’s stereo system. Static seemed to be the most common channel in their current neck of the woods, among a brief news transmission: ‘—ark state park in Washington, where the body count is up to 9—’
Stop. Go back.
“What?” He mumbled, so quietly Jack only hummed his vague acknowledgment as Connor flipped the channels back and forth, desperate to return to that station.
“It… it was this one, I’m sure of it,” he said, met with only snowy static from the stereo, and Jack took his eyes off the road for less than a moment.
“What was? I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening.”
His blood chilled, too much like that night when he had descended from the tower to work on his generator in the middle of the night, believing they were safe and leaving Jack to sleep off his episode alone—until he heard the crickets go quiet in the bushes behind him.
Jack had been the one to save him then, and he would not be caught unaware again. Nor would he let himself be weak when Jack trusted him enough to need him.
“It’s not important, I can’t even find the station again.”
The awkward tilt of Jack’s half-smile was reassuring, even as his heart pounded too hard. He reached to press a button with a circular graphic, one Connor hadn’t assumed was supposed to be a CD, and the little orange display flashed ‘INSERT DISC’.
“… Ah.” It was Connor’s turn to blush, though Jack couldn’t hold himself back from a good-natured chuckle.
“Under 30 and still bested by technology.”
“Hey, I spent four years falling behind on the curve. Do you think the army gave us anything more advanced than ping pong paddles and sun dials? It did make me excellent at smoke signals, though.”
Jack’s laugh warmed him, the only thing he had found that could chase away the unease lately. “You’re an old soul even without living mostly analog all that time.”
“We couldn’t even afford all those letters, they just gave us ANAM,” Connor said with his most comically raised eyebrows, just to hear him laugh again.
As he slipped the disc in the slot, a sensual piano filled the cabin, renewing Jack’s embarrassment when a sultry saxophone joined the singer, the iconic croon of a soulful ballad. He burned, resisting the urge to show how much he was enjoy himself, and chanced a quick look at Connor.
To the tune of his fluttering heart, he only found him smiling, no longer looking through his shoe-box or reading the billboards. Smiling at him, all warm brown eyes as he whispered along with the words, as if to say that between them, everything was sacred because nothing could be wrong.
“I want the real thing, or nothing at all. I need someone that I can be sure will catch me if I should fall. Someone who’ll be there when I call, then I’ll know that it’s the real thing.”
“How… do you know all the words?” Jack said, more to himself than aloud.
“Why do you think?” He reached across the console to touch his hand where it loosened it’s grip on the wheel. “You never have to be embarrassed, Jack, not with me. We’re in this together.”
Easy for him to say, when he’s the one playing with the tempo of the poor man’s heart and the temperature in the room. They came to a stop under a light, and Jack busied his hands tapping his thumb on the wheel until he heard Connor’s seat-belt click, saw him rise to walk towards the back of the RV.
“Where are you going?”
“Use your imagination, Jack, I can’t exactly wander far. Although, I suggest you find a place to park soon, or you might miss the good part.”
“The wh—” He kept his foot on the brake, turning to look for him, just to bite down on his words as Connor slowly threaded his belt free, letting it fall to the rug with a quiet thump. Next came his shirt, pulled off by his hand on the back of his collar. Among the slow reveal of his toned back, the moles on his spine, the song urged Jack onward, a different one, something about “Come to me” and “Let me love you, honey”.
“The light’s green, Jack.” Connor smirked at him, and tossed his shirt in the vague direction of the driver’s seat.
Jack snapped his eyes back to the road, pressing the gas a little too hard and hearing Connor’s laugh drift up from where he grabbed the kitchen counter to steady himself. Quietly, lest he be seen through even more than he already was, he vowed that if he didn’t find a place to park in the next few miles, he would pull over to the shoulder and lock the door.
From the bedroom, a quiet moan piqued his hot ears, among the sound of what might have been his name if he could hear better over the stereo.
Shit. All right, 1 mile.
By the grace of somebody, otherworldly or other, the parking lot to a campsite appeared on his right, empty too, all thanks to the heat advisory that was said to last for the rest of the week. Jack was probably the only person in the county grateful for it, if only because it meant leaving the key in the ignition to keep the AC running left the music on too.
He found Connor already splayed across the bed, distracted from his intentions by the toy bear on the windowsill, the little “Get Well Soon” card in his arms beginning to fade from all the sunbathing he did while his dads drove from state to state. His fingertip nudged the bear’s plastic nose, and Jack began to press kisses along the slope of his shoulder, over the old ink of his tattoo.
“Are we staying here for the night? Adrian’s expecting you Monday morning,” he said.
“I won’t be late, I promise.” Connor turned to steal a kiss from his lips, several actually as he coaxed him to lie back against the pillows. “But whether we get there the day before or the morning of—depends on how much you’ll let me do to you.”
He bared his neck in a plain invitation despite his protests, allowing Connor to seek out his favorite places to kiss while Jack ran encouraging hands into his hair, shorter now after his interview, as well as smoothing his palms over the scratch of the day-old stubble on his chin. It had been a telephone interview, of which Jack reminded him he didn’t have to shave, but Connor insisted it was the right thing to do.
“You’ve always been the needier one, but this—,” Jack’s breath hitched when teeth grazed the skin behind his ear. “You’ve been really affectionate lately.”
“It might be awhile before we get the chance again.”
Light and teasing just a moment ago, the quiet melancholy of Connor’s voice against his neck made Jack’s eyes flutter back open. He cupped his face in his palms, warm in the cheeks where his body was still wound up despite himself, and beckoned him to look up.
“Hey.” From so close, he could see all the barely-there freckles across his nose and cheeks, too light to be anything more than a secret to the rest of the world who didn’t get to hold him the way Jack did. He placed another kiss on his lips. “You’re so good to me. Remember that.”
Connor’s brow scrunched, worried still as he let their foreheads touch. “I want to live up to the version of me that’s in your head.”
“He’s real, I’m holding him. I can feel his dick on my leg.”
The sudden sputter of Connor’s laugh puffed warm across both their faces, and Jack grinned back at him with what he hoped was all the adoration he felt in his chest, the swell of his heart when Connor smiled so bright.
“Okay, Jack… You say you’re not funny, but I like funny men.”
“Eh, logical fallacies, something something, cognitive bias.”
“You lost me.”
“No I didn’t, I can still feel—”
Connor shut him up with a deep kiss, coaxing his mouth open with his thumb so he could slide their tongues together until their lungs burned. With a wet sound, he finally relinquished his lips, admiring the daze in his hazel eyes and the berry-red of his mouth until his voice broke the spell.
“Who are you?” Jack quipped.
“Someone who loves you very much.”
The softness of his face disarmed any playfulness left in the air, replaced only by earnest devotion and the looming ache of starting over, bittersweet no matter how wonderful the company is.
They deserved a break.
Neither of them knew the winter was going to be a hard one. That before the end of the year, they would be in danger again. To take comfort now was a gift, to hold each other close before the leviathan resident of those Ironbark woods emerges from the trees and begins to seek out the only survivors who know it’s name.
They couldn’t know it was
was already awake
.
They cannot know my name.

I See You - Chapter 1
Pairing: Hangman x Phoenix
Word Count: 2k
Warnings: enemies to lovers (not yet tho), slow burn, slight swearing, for sure some military inaccuracies, third person POV
Summary: Phoenix hates Hangman's guts. But she cares about her friends more, and Hangman is making her best friend miserable. About a month ago, Hangman started picking on Bob again. No one knows why he started his jeering up again, but Phoenix is willing to pay anything to make it stop. But what happens when that price is a date? And what happens when it turns out that Jake Seresin actually isn't the worst company?
A/N: I had the idea for this fic after I saw a fanfic quote prompt somewhere: "I brought you a juice." (I can't find the user it was from, but if you do please let me know so I can credit them!) From there I wrote a cute little Hangman x reader incorrect Top Gun quote post, but I realized it was such a Hangman x Phoenix interaction so Jabber and I collaborated over some ideas and this baby was born!
This story is written fully in 3rd person, so omnipotent narrator who reads the other characters minds occasionally, but it takes place mostly from Phoenix’s POV.
Also I may have completely made up correction sensors, but they’re based off whatever targeting system that malfunctions during the “mission” in the movie. They never get mentioned again, please leave them alone. They are sensitive and valid.
Chapter Song(s): Mean, NO, CHOKE
****
"That’s a kill!" Bob’s excited voice came crackling through the radio in the Daggers’ break room.
The room erupted with cheers. No one had been able to down Hangman in this week’s exercises on targeting without the correction sensors so far, but Bob’s quick thinking and steady hand had finally done it. Hangman’s gloating would be replaced by cheers of Bob’s name that day in the lockers. A welcome reprieve.
Back in the air, Phoenix was pumping her fists in the air and flipping off an unknowing Hangman. "Suck it, Bagman! We got your butt good!" the aviator called through the radio. "That’s how we do it over here with the smoothest duo in the Daggers! Great job, Bob! MVP of the exercise for sure.”
The shy backseater blushed lightly beneath his oxygen mask. He still got flustered over the smallest compliments, no matter how many times his supportive squad mates clapped him on the back or clasped his shoulders singing his praises. He stumbled over his words as he squinted against the sun in his eyes, making getting the words out even harder, "I, uh, you—you basically lined up the shot for me, Phoenix, I just pressed the button."
"Nah, that was all you, Bob. Don’t sell yourself short." Phoenix insisted proudly.
"No, please do sell yourself short, Baby," Hangman interjected with a laugh, the cockiness and resentment were practically dripping from his voice, even through the radio.
"Please go screw yourself, Bagman," Phoenix spat back. "Ignore him, Bob, you did amazing."
"It’s okay, Phoenix; he’s just joking." Bob said, always trying to keep the peace, especially between Phoenix and Hangman. Bob was getting pretty good at standing up for himself, but the two of them always seemed to be at each other’s throats and Bob found that he was usually, unintentionally, the reason.
"I wasn’t, actually," Hangman quipped again.
Phoenix’s blood was about to boil; if it wasn’t likely to get both her and Bob a court martial, she’d dive on the cocky blond's plane just to give him a good scare. Instead, she settled for some "playful" verbal abuse.
"Bagman, everything everyone says behind your back is true."
"Was that meant to hurt my feelings, Phoenix?"
"I swear the only reason they let you fly solo is because your WSO would purposely sabotage you both just to get some damn peace."
"Oh, really? That the best you got?" Hangman taunted.
The breezy jovial feeling that had filled the air of the jet just moments before had gone stale, and instead a thick layer of smog-like anger had fallen over the aircraft cockpit. The temperature within had surely gone up by at least a few degrees with all the red hot words flying from Phoenix's mouth into her mic.
Bob's cheeks glowed to a flaming red as he listened to the two pilots bickering, entire body tense, helpless to remove himself from the mid-air argument, just waiting for the right moment to interject. He’d been in this situation many times before—he knew the drill. But that didn't make him any less uncomfortable. "Okay, c’mon, guys—" he began timidly, yet a level of assertion still came through in his voice.
"Great work, aviators!" Mav’s voice came like a shock over the radio, squashing the argument before it could manage to turn physical. No student had died on Mav's watch so far, and he wasn't looking to change that any time soon. Especially because 'purposeful collision due to mid-flight training disagreement' would not go over well on an accident report. "Let’s get these birds back on the ground. It’s quitin' time!"
--
Steam filled the empty locker room. Phoenix breathed deeply as she stepped out of the shower. She always felt like she had gained a new life after her shower at the end of each day; the amount of sweat produced under those flight suits was ungodly. She also liked to imagine that the boiling water was washing away all the boys’ BS that she had gone through that day. She loved, almost, all of them—though she’d never tell them that—but being the only girl on a team of men, Navy men, was rough. She was sure at least two of them truly were raised in a barn, and she knew Bob and Rooster were the only ones who even knew what the word "filter" meant.
She thought on her boys fondly, unable to hold back her smile, as she toweled off her hair behind the emotional privacy of the her locker door. She'd never dare show this side to them. This was still the military, after all, and she was still a woman. No matter how many times she proved herself tougher than the men around her, her and soft emotions were not allowed to coexist without ridicule. Wiping the condensation off of the mirror, she looked at her own face in the tinny glass, it had been hardened over her time in the Navy, and it reminded her of the look of rage on Hangman’s as they clambered back into the hanger. She laughed lightly. That was without a doubt the best thing she’d seen in weeks. She wished she could’ve had it photographed so she could look at it when she was having a bad day.
She didn’t truly hate the cocky pilot, but she had been nearing the line between it and mere distaste with his recent antics. After their first mission together, it had seemed like all grudges between any of the Daggers had been squashed; Hangman and Bob had been fully civil up until a couple weeks ago when Hangman decided to make the younger pilot his verbal target practice. Everyone had noticed the shift, but no one could tell exactly what triggered it. Bob had finally started to stand up for himself in the past couple days, which Phoenix was thankful for because any time anyone else said anything to Hangman, the treatment just got worse. It needed to end, and soon. Phoenix was ready to string Hangman up, but she knew acting out would only risk getting both her and Bob disciplined. She didn’t know what she was going to do. But she was sure as hell going to do something.
She finished getting ready to head home and slung her backpack over her shoulder. She tossed her hair into a loose bun as she walked out of the lockers, preparing to face the scorching heat already constantly present even this early into the California summer. Fanboy intercepted her in the hall outside the locker rooms. His face immediately told her that whatever he was about to say wasn’t another corny joke about his favorite tv series.
"There’s something you should know," he said.
--
"BAGMAN!"
Lt. Jake "Hangman" Seresin might not have finished at the very top of his classes, but he was smart enough to know that that yell could only mean one thing: he was about to get the chew out of a lifetime from one Lt. Natasha "Phoenix" Trace. He pulled his signature toothpick out of his mouth before turning on his heel to see the livid brunette storming down the hall, fire ablaze in her eyes.
If anyone else had been in the vicinity, they would've sworn they felt the temperature shift.
"What the hell, Hangman?" Phoenix barked, shoving a hand roughly into his chest, and sending the unprepared man stumbling back a couple steps with an unsophisticated mix between a "WOAH!" and "HEY!"
"What do you mean ‘what the hell'?" Hangman shot back, gathering himself and stepping forward, squaring his broad shoulders towards her. "You can't just attack a man without telling him what he did to provoke it."
Phoenix's face was now inches from his. Hangman could feel the rage on the heat of her breath.
"Watch me," she said, her voice dripping with venom. "Don't even start that crap with me. You know full well what you did."
"Humor me." Hangman said with the same tone he would have used in a casual conversation with a friend, which this situation very much was not.
There was finger in his face. He pretended there wasn't, looking past it directly into Phoenix's face.
"I am so fed up with your immature little grudge against, Bob."
"I didn't know I ever had one."
Hangman's tone was aloof, and it drove Phoenix crazy. How could he be such a prick? All she wanted to do was punch him in the jaw. She didn’t know why she always felt like she was about to explode with Hangman, no one else made it so difficult for her to keep her emotions in check, but she held it together—this time. She wasn't going to make herself any promises for the future.
"You two were supposed to be cool after the mission, I thought you had agreed to lay off him! I don't know who you think you are, but Bob is just as, if not more, qualified as any of us to be here. And you know it! But your fragile little ego just can't take that he's smarter than you, can it?" She practically spat the last words, ensuring they hit Hangman square in the face.
Phoenix saw his eyes soften for just a second and knew that she'd hit a nerve, but his expression didn’t change. He just continued to look at her with that same stupid, smug expression he always wore.
"And I have laid off him. He's not my concern any longer." He shrugged, popped the toothpick he'd been holding back into his mouth, and started to turn away. Phoenix forcefully grabbed his arm.
Her grip was stronger than Hangman assumed it would be.
"Really? 'Cause that's not what it looked like to Fanboy when he saw you corner him in the lockers after that last flying exercise. He said you looked ready to throttle Bob before he stepped in. That's low, even for you. We got you fair and square in that exercise. If you don't want to lose, try not making stupid mistakes. And one more thing," Phoenix said, leaning into Hangman's face, fists clenched so tightly at her sides they were pure red. "If you ever try taking your sore loss out on Bob again, we will be having a very different conversation that will not be much of a conversation at all."
"Is that a threat, Trace?" Hangman said coolly, a smirk on his face.
"It's a promise," Phoenix snapped, pushing past him forcefully, her shoulder smacking into his.
Hangman dropped his head and laughed, his tongue twirling the toothpick in his mouth. Head still lowered, he called after the receding footsteps, "Wow, I didn't know you had a heart, but since you clearly care so much about him, I'll leave Bob alone."
The footsteps stopped. Hangman turned to face them, shaking his head lightly.
"But it's gonna cost you."
Phoenix cocked one eyebrow in an ‘I knew this was coming' fashion.
"Really?" She said, crossing her arms over her chest, taking a step closer.
"Really." Hangman shot back joyfully, also taking a step closer. He was clearly enjoying this.
"Fine. I'll bite. What's your price?"
"Go on a date with me."
Phoenix scoffed, staring at him agape as if she hadn't heard him correctly or refused to believe he'd actually said what she thought he said.
"That's the worst joke you've ever made, Bagman, and you've made a lot of bad jokes." She scoffed again as she turned and continued toward the exit.
"Maybe because it wasn't a joke." There wasn't a drop of sarcasm in his voice.
"You’ve got to be kidding me," said Phoenix, turning back to him again.
"You want me to leave Bob alone? That's my price. One date, and we'll never have this issue again. I promise." He held up three fingers in a "scouts honor" kind of way.
"You’re insufferable, Bagman," Phoenix said. With that, she turned and walked down the hallway, silently fuming.

Chapter 10 Trivia
Friendship backstories!

Senku's in first grade here, so he's either 6-7 depending on the time of year. He's got what is probably a leatherman and a mains testing screwdriver in his pocket (or a pen? I'm not sure if it's transparent or has writing).

On Senku's desk we have Boichi's mascot on the right, Doraemon manga on the left, NASA posters behind and an RX-78-2 Gundam in the middle.

Senku says he doesn't even know the first thing about science, but keeps specialised tools in his pocket..?

The book titles here are probably 「アリエナイ理科」 (Mad Science) and「マンガでわかる理科」 (Manga For Understanding Science).

Byakuya doesn't want to let go of the keys to the car here, the man has to tug them away from him…

There's a lot of random science items in here.

The pattern on Senku's pyjamas seems to disappear.

Iron sand wouldn't work for this application, as the sand tends to be magnetite rather than iron (III) oxide, which is necessary for the thermite reaction.
Thermite itself can be made with many combinations of metal power and a metal oxide.

Senku's testing the rocket engine's power here which is why it's contained in a frame.
The part that makes me sad is that Taiju's shoes are too small and worn out, who's been taking care of him if his parents are dead?

Baby's first branding?

Senku built a Tesla coil to defeat the bullies with as Taiju doesn't fight back. These are possible to build, but they're close range "weapons" only, and can be fatal if you get zapped by the wrong part due to the electrical current.

Ablative material is what is on the outside of a rocket, preventing it from getting shredded during ascent and reentry. The ones on a rocket are designed to disperse the heat and shed material slowly, protecting the internals.

The shopping list is for a small computer (Raspberry Pi), a device to interpret the signals from other sensors (transmission module), and something to measure direction and tilt (gyroscope).
Put together, Senku will be able to collect mid-flight data.

A Yagi-Uda antenna is just a directional antenna.
Why Taiju thought it was a good idea to open something with a skull and crossbones on it indoors and after knowing Senku for a while, I have no idea.

Taiju's doll lost a button after the explosion, and Senku's hair split in several places. In particular, the front strand split, just like the real Senku's!

The cervical plexus is a collection of nerves along the back of your neck. What Tsukasa proposes is severing the connection between the head and the rest of the body. If the injury is above the 3rd vertebra, Senku's breathing muscles will be paralysed.
As there are also arteries in that area, blocking those will prevent oxygen reaching the brain and Senku will fall unconscious quickly.
However, this is not an "instant" death.

I always wonder, if Tsukasa had had friends before petrification, would he have still done this to Senku?
It's also pretty funny that Tsukasa's fond flashbacks are mostly him interacting with Senku while naked.

Over loudspeakers, the IDF asked all men between the ages of 16 and 40 to leave the hospital buildings, except the surgical and emergency departments, and go to the hospital courtyard.
Soldiers fired into the air to force those remaining inside to come out, Khader said.
He also said troops installed a scanning and sensor device and asked the men to pass through it.
-
Dr Mokhallalati told the BBC on Wednesday that the hospital was without power, oxygen and water. On Tuesday, essential surgeries had been carried out without proper anaesthesia, with patients "screaming in pain", he said. No surgeries could be carried out on Wednesday. Doctors were unable to help one patient with burns on Tuesday due to lack of equipment including ventilators and had to just "let him die", Dr Mokhallalati added. He also said that six premature babies had died in recent days and that he feared more would die due to lack of oxygen and lack of power.
-
"Why can't they be evacuated" Dr Mokhallalati said of the babies. "In Afghanistan, they evacuated the cats and dogs." "Where is the ICRC [International Committee of the Red Cross]?" he added. "Where are the British and American governments? Is everyone just waiting for us all to die here and then say we were 'good people'?"
Although Israel previously said it was ready to allow staff and patients to evacuate, Palestinians have said Israeli forces opened fire at them and that it was too dangerous to move vulnerable patients. Witnesses have described dire conditions inside the hospital, with families with scant food or water living in corridors and smell of decomposing bodies in the air.

Baby Monitor Features Every New Parent Should Look for
As a new parent, you’re over the moon about bringing your little one home. But eventually, the time comes when you can’t cuddle them in your arms and need to rest. Whether they're in their crib or the arms of other caregivers, a multi-tasking baby monitor can help you keep eyes and ears on your baby without needing to be in the same room. So, whether you’re shopping for your family or selecting the right tech to add to your registry, here are four baby monitor features to consider.
1. Smart Technology
When you’re not in the same space as your baby, your new parent radar may go off. Put your mind at ease with a smart baby monitor that can track your baby's vitals. By monitoring your baby’s heart rate, you’ll know when and if they sleep soundly. Similarly, a baby oxygen monitor can update you on whether your baby’s oxygen saturation levels are normal or not.

2. Video and Audio Capabilities
With a newborn, seeing is just as important as hearing. Look for a baby monitor that provides high-definition video through a camera and allows you to listen and respond to your baby with two-way communication. High-quality camera features are especially important for clearly observing or checking in on your little one. If possible, find a baby monitor that includes nightlight capabilities, which can help reduce harsh room light while providing enough illumination to soothe your baby to sleep or change a diaper in the middle of the night.
3. Environmental Sensors
Did you know a baby’s ideal room temperature is 65-72° Fahrenheit? If you’re a new parent, this might be news to you, but anything above or below can prevent your baby from getting the restful sleep they need. Look for a baby temperature monitor that reads the room temperature and humidity conditions to ensure your baby’s environment is comfortable and meets their growing needs and lets you know of any anomalies.

4. Smartphone App Functionality
Raising a newborn is often marked by periods of brain fog. Instead of trying to remember your baby's habits, consider a baby monitoring app that keeps track for you. With data tracking capabilities, you can easily track your baby's sleep patterns, diaper changes, and feeding times at the click of a button. You can also monitor your baby’s weight and height measurements in one convenient location. This will make pediatric visits a breeze with the information readily available at your fingertips.
Of course, the best baby monitor is the one that works best for your family. So, when you’re shopping for the right baby monitor, make sure it includes as many of these features to support you and your baby’s well-being, allowing you to rest assured that your baby is comfortable and happy.

About Hälsa Baby™
A new baby is a big responsibility; a little support goes a long way. With Hälsa Baby, you get the support you need to focus all your attention on your baby. Their All-in-One Wellness Monitor helps you gain peace of mind while watching over your little ones during naps and bedtime. Hälsa Baby™ thinks of it all so you can spend your time caring and bonding with your little one.

The Real Thing (original version)
A Fears to Fathom: Ironbark Lookout drabble, related to My Own, Distant Home
We reached 100 hits on My Own, Distant Home while I wasn't looking, that's so exciting! Thank you all for your support, and have this as a gift. I'm working on another long fic for Ironbark, a proper sequel to this one, so this should line up as a teaser. Something soft and sweet, with just enough dread
UPDATE: This is the original version. A new, longer version is posted to the masterlist and ao3, which is considered the canon version in this AU.
Jack Nelson x Connor Hawkins Words: 1.3k Genre: Fluff (too sweet maybe), horror elements
~*~
Tall, bright green trees lined the winding blacktop road, obscuring the path around the upcoming curves, but not able to block out the sun on such a clear, summer day. The RV navigated the road with ease at the hands of it’s owner and operator, most recently passing a green interstate sign, “You are now leaving Idaho”, and the doubly large sign after it where a cowboy on his horse declared “Welcome to Wyoming: Forever West.”
“I think you were more excited to get your CD collection back than your truck,” said Jack, as Connor flipped happily through his shoe-box of albums, the edges worn down to the cardboard where it had been slid out and back under the bench seat over and over for years.
“The joy is split, for sure. I let the kids keep all the Journey and Alice Cooper. They were vocal about wanting those.”
Jack took his eyes off the road long enough to smile at him, admire the childish joy on his face as he hunched over the box, thumbing over the track lists like he was a teenager again, in a music store for the first time.
“That was an incredible thing you did, Connor,” Jack said seriously. “To buy Stacy a car in exchange for getting the truck back. When it was yours to begin with, and she wasn’t going to fight you on wanting to keep it with us.”
“Nah.” He shooed away Jack’s admiration, flipping over the CD in his hand. “I wasn’t gonna leave her with nothing. And it wasn’t like I got her a Mercedes, just a little something for her to get back and forth to work and the kids to school. I should be thanking you, actually, you’re the one who looked over the engine and told the guy to change the oxygen sensors before we would pay for it.”
Jack offered a shrug, managing a shy smile when Connor reached over to nudge his cheek, unable to kiss him with his seat-belt on.
“What kind of albums do you have, Jack? I think we’ve listened to nothing but the radio since we left Washington.”
“I like the radio. It’s got NPR, weather, rock, every—THING! Connor, no.” He yelled (squeaked) in alarm when Connor began rummaging through the glove compartment, looking for evidence to the contrary.
Toto, Tracy Chapman, Annie Lennox, BOBBY Caldwell—Jackie? Blue-eyed soul?”
Jack’s face was red enough to pass for a farmer’s market tomato, hands tight on the steering wheel. If Connor squinted, he might see steam rising from his collar beneath the tight line of his lips. “Don’t make fun of me, Connor, please.”
“I would never, Jack,” he replied earnestly, all whiskey and warmth as he popped open one of the cases and began to decipher the RV’s stereo system. Static seemed to be the most common channel in their current neck of the woods, among a brief news transmission: ‘—ark state park in Washington, where the body count is up to 9—’, lost to both their ears with Connor’s searching for the right button.
With a slip of the disc in the slot, a sensual piano filled the cabin, only worsening Jack’s embarrassment when a sultry saxophone joined the singer, the iconic croon of a soulful ballad. He burned, resisting the urge to enjoy himself, and chanced a quick look at Connor.
To the tune of his fluttering heart, he only found him smiling, no longer looking through his box or reading the billboards. Smiling at him, all warm brown eyes as he began to sing along, as if to say that between them, everything was sacred because nothing could be wrong.
“I want the real thing, or nothing at all. I need someone that I can be sure will catch me if I should fall. Someone who’ll be there when I call, then I’ll know that it’s the real thing.”
“How… do you know all the words?” Jack mumbled, and Connor cut off his amateur singing.
“Why do you think?” He reached across the console to touch his hand where it loosened it’s grip on the wheel. “You never have to be embarrassed, Jack, not with me.”
Easy for him to say, when he’s the one playing with both the tempo of the poor man’s heart and the temperature in the room. They came to a stop under a light, and Jack busied his hands tapping his thumb on the wheel until he heard Connor’s seat-belt click, saw him rise to walk towards the back of the RV.
“Where are you going?” As long as he was out of sight, he would miss him.
“Use your imagination, Jack, I can’t exactly wander far. Although, I suggest you find a place to park soon, or you might miss the good part.”
“The wh—” He kept his foot on the brake, turning away from the red light to look for him, only to bite down on his words as Connor slowly slipped his belt free, let it fall to the rug with a quiet thump. Next came his shirt, pulled off by the hand on the back of his collar. Among the slow reveal of his toned back, the moles on his spine, the song urged Jack onward, a different one, something about “Come to me” and “Let me love you, honey”.
“The light’s green, Jack.” Connor smirked at him, tossing his shirt in the vague direction of the driver’s seat.
He snapped his eyes back to the road, pressing the gas a little too hard and hearing Connor’s laugh drift up from where he grabbed the kitchen counter to steady himself. If Jack didn’t find a place to park in the next 3 miles, he vowed, he would pull them onto the damn shoulder and hope this road was as rarely traveled as the map had suggested.
From the bedroom, a quiet moan piqued his hot ears, among the sound of what might have been his name if the CD player wasn’t still going in the speaker beside his feet.
Shit. All right, 1 mile.
By the grace of somebody, otherworldly or other, the parking lot to a campsite appeared on his right, empty too, all thanks to the heat advisory that was meant to last for the rest of the week. Jack was probably the only person in the county grateful for it, if only because it meant leaving the key in the ignition to keep the AC running left the music on too.
They deserved their break.
Neither of them knew the winter was going to be a hard one. That before the end of the year, they would be in danger again. Better to grab some comfort while they can, hold each other close, before the leviathan resident of those Ironbark woods extends itself from the trees and begins to seek out the only survivors who know it’s name.
They couldn’t know it was already awake.
