If I hear one more thing about these oscar snubs I’m gonna scream
I loved Barbie!
Margot Robbie is an amazing actress and Greta is an amazing director but all I was hearing about the Oscar’s was “Oh they were snubbed” “Can’t believe they were overshadowed” “Oscars are stupid”
So imagine my surprise when I see AMERICA FERRERA WAS NOMINATED
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much outrage over the women who didn’t get nominated yet no cheers for the one who did?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
America Ferrera has been in the industry for years and she’s finally getting the recognition she DESERVES
WHY CANT WE BE HAPPY ABOUT THAT!
WHY CANT WE CELEBRATE THAT?!!
And the worst part is no one has been more gracious about this than Margot. She’s not posting about her outrage or her anger, she’s proud of the movie they made and is supportive of all of her costars

One thing I've been thinking a lot about amid the argument over the Barbie movie's lack of nominations is the aggressive level of hate it gets.
FYI, this is not about whether I think the Barbie movie deserved more nominations or not because it doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter if it was a good movie or not. It doesn't matter that it was about feminism either. What matters — and what is at the core of all the hate — is that it's a movie for women. For girls.
Anything whose target audience is young women and teenage girls is inevitably slammed with hate.
It will be called overrated. It will be called basic. It will be shit on. The comments and reviews will be FULL of people saying how stupid or terrible it is, how they've always hated it, and how anyone who watches or listens or consumes it is too.
Again, it does not matter whether x product or y performer is overrated, or not talented, or a thousand other insults people (mostly men, but anyone seeking to set themselves, even subtly, apart from people who like popular, feminine things). What matters is the alarming level to which we've normalized the hate that gets thrown at young women — and especially at teenage girls — for daring to like something popular.
Since when has popular become a bad word? Products that are marketed towards women are hugely profitable, and yet critically shamed. Remember pumpkin spice lattes? I've never seen one girl fawn over them as much as I've seen 100 grownass men spew nonsense about how silly and childish and girly a flavor is. A flavor.
It doesn't matter what Taylor Swift's most adoring fans are like, even the ones who are over the top, because no one attacks men who get too enthusiastic about their favorite sports teams or fantasy football the way people attack her fans for being excited to see her in concerts. It's because her fanbase is predominantly young girls, and anything young women are into must be shamed.
The relative anonymity — or at least, the safety — of the internet has enabled people to be harsher than they might in real life, but bullying young women and girls for their interests is not a new phenomenon.
Romance has occupied the lowest rung of the genre ladder for arguably hundreds of years. Wholly romantic movies (meaning movies in which romance is the primary drama, rather than a subplot within another genre) must be *exemplary* to get critical praise. More male-centric genres like dramas or any movie seen as "intellectual" often only have to be *good* to get the same kind of attention. This is not a dig at Oppenheimer or any of the other movies nominated (nor am I saying Barbie is a romance). The point is that romance is held to a significantly higher critical standard because it is largely not for a male audience.
(As a side note, plenty of romance is genderless the way many other genres' audiences are, but as a society we've boxed it into a 'feminine' box and decided feminine=bad. I could write a whole essay as to why.)
I am absolutely not saying Barbie deserved or didn't deserve this or that, or that Taylor Swift should never be criticized, or that romance is a perfect genre. I am not saying these examples are the most important of their kind.
What I am saying is that anything that is both popular and centered around women is always, inevitably, and extremely harshly attacked by people who do not like it, and this has the potential to be incredibly damaging to teenage girls, especially in an age where social media use starts younger and younger.
What happened to, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all? Or, let people like what they like? You don't have to like something, but you don't always have to voice your hate for it either.

Idk I’m gonna hope I’m not the only one noticing this but the Barbie movie is not a win for feminism or social progress or anything… it’s a win for Mattel bc the market has shifted to where diverse or progressive media is in demand.
Uhhh yea it’s not about Ben Shapiro burning Barbies vs women getting to make a movie about women in the end. It’s about Mattel making big bucks off of both reactions.
I think mattel isn’t even shying away from this much in the movie I think they know that Fox News, twitter, and movie award shows will get them enough publicity to make up for any flack they get about… uhhh worsening consumerism. I remember something about a pink part of the pacific garbage patch bc of so much Barbie merch…
Honestly makes sense for the Barbie franchise.
It doesn’t make sense to call it progressive or feminist though.

Watching the oscar nominations this year reminds me of this moment with Natalie Portman. I know Justine Triet got nominated for best director too, but lets be honest, they'll still give the award to a man...
Also, it's AGAIN still mostly men being nominated (80% men, which if anything is lower than usual) and Greta Gerwig deserved to be nominated!!
This is disgusting and infuriating and cannot be allowed to be the norm!
Also it's horrible how people are actually hating on other women for being mad about this; calling them privileged white feminists.
The speech in Barbie was 100% right; women are still being compared to each other and are never enough. Women get discriminated against at the Oscar's and people are still hating on us. They use other women's discrimination to undermine and silence this injustice.
None of it should be tolerated.
That being said I'm so happy Lily Gladstone got nominated she was fantastic 👏 ❤️

It may be a new year, however, Gaza is continuously experiencing genocide. Right now women and children are the main victims. As you can see it is very do-able to spread the word whilst being on theme of your blog so there is no excuse. The smallest of contributions we can make are:
- To use our platforms to spread awareness about what is being inflicted on Palestinians. Not posting about it does not mean that it is no longer happening.
- To avoid posting about rich mediocre celebrities that have either, shown support for Zionism, spread misinformation or have not uttered a word about what’s happening, simply because they showed up for fashion week or any major event.
- Boycotting businesses has proven to be effective. Many corporations have lost billions because of their blatant support for the genocide in Gaza. We live in a capitalist society, but we also have collective power. Both of which has made boycotting that much easier.

So the academy really expects me to believe that Barbie has:
• The best costume design
• The best production design
• The best original songs
• The best actors in a supporting role
• The best adapted screenplay
And is one of the best films of the year according to the best picture nomination
AND YET GRETA GERWIG AND MARGOT ROBBIE ARE NOT NOMINATED FOR BEST DIRECTING AND BEST ACTRESS
What does that even mean? Do they think the film directed itself? It’s ridiculous

looking at the Barbie Oscar noms like
Tumblr media
honestly, I wasn't even as into Barbie as a lot of other people were, but seeing a movie about the displacement of women in the public consciousness get award nominations (AND WINS) for the male lead and his joke song instead of most of its female creative team may turn out to be my villain origin story.
like... seriously??? even Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated???
I'm Just Ken got nominated??? instead of Dua Lipa?????
okay!!!

Remember the Palestinian genocide is still ongoing, even during Ramadan and while everyone is distracted by the Oscars. Make noise.

They are going to worsen their strikes while people are looking away. It is already happening. Don't look away and use your voice for the people of Palestine.

Ryan Gosling getting an Oscar nomination for Barbie but them snubbing Margo for actress and Greta for directing is the biggest example of the patriarchy still thriving. The Academy completely missed the message of the movie and I am so angry!!!
