All these years later, it's still inexplicable that this was a massive mainstream hit. It has much more in common with a novelty like the Monster Mash than it does with a pop song.
“Batdance,” Prince’s fourth #1 single, isn’t a dance, and it’s only barely a song. “Batdance” is a stitched-together six-minute monstrosity, is full of Batman dialogue samples and clips from Prince tracks that Batman director Tim Burton had rejected. It’s virtually impossible to judge “Batdance” as a standalone piece of music because “Batdance” was never intended as a standalone piece of music. Instead, it’s a marketing tool.
