‘Batman: Soul of the Dragon’ Movie Review

What do you get when you add a dash of Roger Moore’s James Bond to a sizable helping of martial arts legend Bruce Lee? Warner Bros Home Entertainment’s all-new original animated film, "Batman: Soul Of The Dragon", which places the Dark Knight into an Elseworld 1970s adventure. Faced with a deadly menace from his past, and along with his mentor O-Sensei, Bruce Wayne must enlist the help of three former classmates – world-renowned martial artists Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva – to battle the monsters of this world and beyond.

I will say, right off the bat (pun intended), I was intrigued with this flick. I have always loved animation in HD, and the upscaled 4K presentation makes watching even more enjoyable. The sound is another plus, bombastic sound effects and an applicable soundtrack give the movie a real motion picture feel. The real treat for me was the rad fight scenes, which are very Street Fighter-ish, as they play out like a fun old school video game.

If you are looking for a story where Batman is at the forefront, this is not it. Instead, Bruce Wayne is a supporting character with Batman making a few appearances. The other cast of characters are interesting enough to assuage your attention, however the plot itself is not deep, which didn’t hurt the film too much in my opinion. The action and fight scenes are very well done and cool enough to help forget the plot’s shortcomings. The hairstyles and wardrobes are fantastic and quite a departure from any recent animated action flick. To me, the story seems to have run about 5 minutes too long, as the actual ending only sets up the movie for a sequel and services no other real purpose. 

With WBHE’s recent animated adaptations of classic graphic novels being so weak, an original story is a welcome addition ... add that to the fact there are a lack of films being released during the pandemic, this an appealing flick that deserves a view of at least a rental.

The film is rated R for some violence, but also has its fair helping of language and a few adult situations. This film is NOT for children.
