I think the one thing that kind of shows how DC’s attempt to make Cass and Lady Shiva less racist has failed was that people still just refers to Cass as just an asian woman. Aside from me, i legit don’t even think anyone else knows or cares that Cass is Chinese. And I don’t say this as blaming other people because to put it frankl, I don’t even think DC gives a shit seeing as their attempt to confirm what ethnicity Shiva and by extension Cass is was really bad. The closest DC has ever gotten to confirming Shiva and Cass’s ethnicity was in the 2019 run of Batman and the Outsiders where ra's al ghul uses a weapon to destroy a chinese Village that was specified to be where Shiva was from. The issue with this is two fold:

The first issue is that just being from a chinese village does not mean that Shiva herself has to be chinese. IT’s complicated but the TLDR of it is that Shiva could very well be a non ethnic chinese person living in china, there’s a lot of non chinese minorities that have lived in china and is recognized by the chinese government. Or she could be apart of one of the various groups of ethnic chinese people living outside of china, like Chinese indonesian for example. This throwaway detail feels like DC just realized having two of their major asian characters just be vague asians is racist and so they decided to try and actually give them a ethnicity beyond “Asian” but then they actual efforts just did not work. It still ends up being vague to the point of meaninglessness. The second issue is that this whole thing just feels like a throwaway and not a serious attempt to explore the heritage of either character. Nothing about either characters has changed, and as far as I know there’s  nothing about Cass trying to reconnect with her heritage or anything. At the end of the day, they’re both still just vague asian characters. I guess i just keep on obsessing with Cass as being Chinese because she is prob the closest i will have to a chinese woman in DC. The only other Chinese heroes in DC who are chinese that I know of is Peng Deilan who afaik is just gone from the DC universe, and Mother of Champions,who i think is god awful and i hope whoever created them never works again.  Maybe there will be more chinese women in the House of Ji, but considering the only good chinese characters in DC so far has all been at the hands of Gene Luen Yang, and that the last time a white person wrote a chinese women it was that atrocity Mother of Champions, I am not going to hold my breath. Hey while i got yall here, does Grant Morrision have a twitter or something? SO i can ask him why for the love of god he thought a good superpower for any woman to have, let alone a chinese woman, was child birth?

BATOBER DAY 6: DAUGHTER

(INSPIRED BY GHOSTPAINTER’S ART)

The chair was uncomfortable, as most were in the Gotham Orchestra Hall. But right now I’m Bruce Wayne, he’d sat through his fair share of opera shows and could handle another. Plus, tonight was a special one in fact for us and the entire family who all made it to support her.

To my right, the boys all in a row which made him proud. Duke and Tim were discussing cases, even participating in their favorite game of sleuth. The culprit Tim was hinting at was obviously Firefly, but he’d hold his tongue till they got back to the Manor. Dick was busy trying to fix Damian’s tie, fix was a gentle way of saying it as it was like watching a vet collar a feral cat. Jason was just enjoying the show evident by his laughing. It was nice to have his sons in one place, it had gotten harder for such a feat in the years.

The two vacant seats to my left allowed him to see Stephanie and Harper laughing as they discussed one another’s college experiences. Harper may not operate on the streets anymore but she was always welcomed to any family function, especially one that was this important. Next to the girls was Kate, who Bruce didn't think would make it given her and Cassandra’s history.

“I’ll just stay till Intermission and say my good graces. Don’t make a thing out of it, B.” She said, I secretly hope that they could one day forgive and move on. But in this family, that was not easy for any of them to do.

I shook out of his memories as he saw Alfred and Barbara coming down the aisle. Alfred escorted Barbara to her seat as he placed his hand upon my shoulder with a comforting smile.

“Is she??”

Barbara shoots down my fears in an instant.

“She’s fine Bruce. Just pre-show jitters. She loved the gifts you guys gave her.”

I breathed a sigh of relief at those words. I smile and relax into my seat as the curtains begin to rise and the lights fall onto the stage. Standing amongst the dancers was the lead of the show, Cassandra.

The show continued on, Cassandra as the lead dancer putting on a stellar performance brought Alfred to tears. During intermission, I saw Kate so engrossed in conversation with Stephanie and Harper that she almost forgot about her wanting to leave.

“Take care of her please.”

I quickly spun around and saw a fleeing figure with long sheen black hair exiting the ballet hall. She would never mention it to her, nor would I but it was some form of comfort that Cassandra had at least one parent who cared. In her own, very strange way.

“Of course I will.”

The Mothers of Jason Todd

The story of Jason finding his mother and ultimately his death is a well-known one. Reading A Death in the Family is a painful milestone for any Jason fan. But there are several interesting things I noted that I wanted to explore. 

After being placed on inactive duty by Bruce, Jason wanders into his old neighborhood and is waved down by a former neighbor who gives him a box of his parent's old things: papers and photos etc which is where he finds his birth certificate. 

Boy, isn’t it lucky that Willis’ old address book was in the box, too?

Regardless, time to find these women.

After meeting up with Batman in Lebanon, accidentally nonetheless, we meet the lovely Sharmin who is trying to stop Joker from selling a nuke. After handling that, we get this exchange. 

Not in Gotham City?  Jason, baby, did you check the city you were born in on your birth certificate? Seems fishy but they seem satisfied. Okay.

Next, off to Shiva. Well,  this will be a blast...

Okay, so we know now that was bullshit. Hello, Cassandra Cain anyone?

Now, obviously, Cass probably wasn’t even a twinkle in the writers’ eyes at this point. Regardless, I highly doubt someone like Lady Shiva couldn’t lie here if she wanted to.

Finally, we have Sheila herself. 

Bruce seems convinced from the get go. 

And so does Jason.

And she has a really good story.

Though, I think it has a few holes...

I think we all probably think that though.

What really bothers me is this:

This is what something Sheila says to Bruce after the warehouse blows up. See how she used the third person to describe Jason’s mother? She’s not referring to herself. Yet, in the previous panels, she has no such issue when referring to herself. 

Now, personally, I don’t headcanon Sheila as Jason’s mother. So I think it’s particularly interesting that she referred to “his mother” rather than “me”. I think it’s telling. I think she saw an opportunity and took it. 

But I’m not a DC writer.
