gonna make myself emo thinking about baud. imagine you're moment's pallor and you've been killed for your heresy and then resurrected in a new sort of medical experiment and because of this you are highly monitored. you're given a robotic gecko to assist you in your work and you know that it's surveiling you. you know that it's sending reports back to the faction leaders watching over you. and you know that robots don't talk to people. they have their own names and their own language that they do not share with humans, ever. but you're moment's pallor. so you talk to it anyway. yes, this creature's deeper function is to keep you in line, but on the surface it's here to help. and it does help! and you spend so much time with it! it won't tell you its name and it won't ever respond, but you can't just ignore it. you can't not talk to it. you've been (clumsily, foolishly) trying to teach yourself its language. you start calling it baud, for lack of any other name. it's about the speed of data transfer, isn't it? always sending back reports. this gecko is the closest thing you have to a friend.

Fenro Week Day 1 : Nerd flirting @fenroweek2024
Translation: With very little words, Gyro can say a lot, Fenton has no trouble understanding him.
Full nerdy explanation under the cut for anyone who is curious.
Baud: unit of measurement of symbol rate. This is, how many symbols are transmitted per second in a communication system.
Symbol: a word composed by a given number of bits. Remember bytes? Those are symbols of 8 bits, however symbols can have any lenght.
128-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation: a type of digital modulation process capable to use 128 wave shapes to represent data. 128-QAM uses symbols of 7 bits length.
Bit Error Rate: number of wrong bits in a symbol reconstructed by the receiver device.
A lot of feelings (1000 Bauds) within a few words but with deep meanings (128-QAM) and because Fenton knows Gyro so well there's no place for misunderstandings (BER close to 0). Get it? Please tell me you do 😭

This is such an important article, the above link is a gift 🎁 link so that anyone can read the entire article, even if they don't subscribe to The New York Times. Here are some highlights:
Two prominent conservative law professors have concluded that Donald J. Trump is ineligible to be president under a provision of the Constitution that bars people who have engaged in an insurrection from holding government office. The professors are active members of the Federalist Society, the conservative legal group, and proponents of originalism, the method of interpretation that seeks to determine the Constitution’s original meaning. The professors — William Baude of the University of Chicago and Michael Stokes Paulsen of the University of St. Thomas — studied the question for more than a year and detailed their findings in a long article to be published next year in The University of Pennsylvania Law Review. [...] He summarized the article’s conclusion: “Donald Trump cannot be president — cannot run for president, cannot become president, cannot hold office — unless two-thirds of Congress decides to grant him amnesty for his conduct on Jan. 6.” [...] The provision in question is Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Adopted after the Civil War, it bars those who had taken an oath “to support the Constitution of the United States” from holding office if they then “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” [...] The article concluded that essentially all of that evidence pointed in the same direction: “toward a broad understanding of what constitutes insurrection and rebellion and a remarkably, almost extraordinarily, broad understanding of what types of conduct constitute engaging in, assisting, or giving aid or comfort to such movements.” It added, “The bottom line is that Donald Trump both ‘engaged in’ ‘insurrection or rebellion’ and gave ‘aid or comfort’ to others engaging in such conduct, within the original meaning of those terms as employed in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.” [...] The provision’s language is automatic, the article said, establishing a qualification for holding office no different in principle from the Constitution’s requirement that only people who are at least 35 years old are eligible to be president. “Section 3’s disqualification rule may and must be followed — applied, honored, obeyed, enforced, carried out — by anyone whose job it is to figure out whether someone is legally qualified to office,” the authors wrote. That includes election administrators, the article said. Professor Calabresi said those administrators must act. “Trump is ineligible to be on the ballot, and each of the 50 state secretaries of state has an obligation to print ballots without his name on them,” he said, adding that they may be sued for refusing to do so. [color/emphasis added]
Let's hope that election administrators across the US read this article and begin to set in motion the mechanism to prevent Donald Trump from appearing on ballots across the U.S., in case he does get the GOP nomination.

lem feeling so lonesome for his sister really rings as him being like “she’s the one who raised me” (jacques too) and kit being like “that’s my baby”. she’s the one who bandaged his scrapes, defined words for him, blew his cups of tea for him when they’re too hot, introduced him to all of his favorite books. she’s has gone through all the training he has in advance and by god she won’t let him make the same mistakes.

How each of the 12 Baudelaires would text
{the fic}
Lilac: Incorporates gifs related to shows she likes whenever she can. She’d also use the ‘<3’ heart.
Violet: the ‘👍’ and ‘👎’ emojis are her best friends bc they’re straight to the point and she doesn’t like spending a lot of time typing or reading long messages (which is why she despises messaging Klyde bc he sends entire ESSAYS for what Violet reckons could be summarised to a simple 👍 or 👎).
Laurie: uses ‘UwU’ unironically. Also uses LOTS of acronyms (ttyl, lol, ily , etc) and an unnecessary amount of positive emojis with every message bc she gets paranoid about accidentally coming off as aggressive💞💗😄😚⭐️🌸😜
Veronica: Has a habit of shortening words to just numbers or letters (like ‘y’ instead of ‘why’, and ‘l8r’ instead of ‘later’) bc she values efficiency. It annoys the hell out of Klaus+Klyde. Which, naturally, makes Veronica do it even more. Her most used emotes are ‘>:D’ , ‘>:((‘ , ‘😶’ and ‘:-/‘
Nick: Doesn’t reply to messages for weeks, and when he eventually does it’s with a rickroll
Klaus: Autocorrect is his worst enemy. He keeps typing out complicated words in a rush to get his thoughts out and doesn’t notice till too late that autocorrect has changed 40% of the words to nonsensical ones. His texting style is pretty friendly though, he uses the ‘:)’ smile a lot.
Klyde: Perfect grammar and spellings. On the rare occasion he uses emojis they’d be used with carefully thought out grammar (he took Aunt Josephine’s lessons to heart). For example, he’d send a text like this; “I am thoroughly disappointed; 🙁.”
Larry: Texts entirely in minion memes+ ‘despicable me’ screenshots. He could be told via messages that his house burned down and he’d respond with a
Tumblr media
[Image description: A screenshot of a sad minion who stares at the ground whilst holding their hands together.]
Solitude: hieroglyphs.
Sunny: Eats the phone
Susie: emojis; although it gets a little confusing trying to figure out which sibling she’s talking about given she only uses 👦, 🧑 and 👩 to describe them.
Lil’ Linda: doesn’t message. She just stares mesmerised at her reflection in the phone’s turned off screen.

This week i found myself a new hyperfixation: Disney's Fireball. A 2000s japan exclusive series of shorts that aired on Disney Japan and nowhere else about a princess robot and her giant butler spider hanging out in their castle set in a post apocalyptic world
Tumblr media
Highly HIGHLY recommend. This show is about 15 years old and yet it feels like a show that would come out today. The snappy, fast paced humor centered around the character dialogue all fit into 39 2 minute shorts. TELL me that doesn't sound like a TikTok series. Probably the best aged comedy ive ever seen and a very modern example of something being years ahead of it's time.
There are 4 seasons, each going further back in time from where we start. This results in not only great comedy, but also really interesting, be it vague, worldbuilding.
The whole thing is available for free with a quick google (except for 10 episodes of season 3, those are apparently lost media)
What pains me however is that this show is TOO obscure. Like, this is the first time im diving into an interest so niche there is nothing but CRUMBS of content. I cannot emphasize enough how quick these episodes fly by and how much they leave you wanting more of it- WHICH WE WILL PROBABLY NEVER GET CAUSE ITS SO NICHE 😭
Even looking the series up online its crazy how little discussion there is of it outside youtube and tiktok clips.
Go watch Fireball! Its awesome! I hope this show gets the attention it deserves
