Why am I so obsessed with lovesick Melkor and chaotic gay philosophy energy. For some reason I also like nervous wreck Melkor and an overconfident, arrogant Sauron…..

I headcannon Melkor as very shy and reserved, but at the same time extremely destructive and wrathful. - But somehow he’s a chill red-wine sipping guy? Oof, (Contradictions, I know) also Melkor is deathly afraid of being vulnerable, and hates having to endure social interaction longer than necessary, and yet has the most fine tuned, eloquent speaking voice in the world that could convince nearly anyone to do anything….. but he doesn’t learn how to do shit with that skill till later. Melkor has an intuitive understanding of existence on a purely conceptual level, being unable to translate this into patterns or words. Sauron on the other hand is a pattern recognizing prodigy, and is cavalier with social interactions- he’s had like 15 different lovers before he gets with Melkor, and is well versed in the subtleties of social play and getting people to do shit. Meanwhile Melkor is just quietly sipping his wine in the corner. Mairon is a bratty social butterfly, and Melkor’s your stereotypical infj. He is very committed to Mairon, and Mai is back most of the time, but…..like elves man, elves. Mairon dosen’t take sexual acts as very serious, to him such things are often just a tool, so being intimate for him is more so imparted through just talking and Mel and he being jerks together. Melkor on the other hand finds physical intimacy itself to be nearly the highest form of vulnerability, because it means showing a side of himself he’d sometimes rather not exist. He’s used to being a primordial titan of untempered chaos, and any sign of weakness feels as a death trap to him. He doesn’t want to have emotions to begin with, and often feels like he just wants to obliterate everything in his path- expect Mairon, because gay. Sauron also just seems to know everything, and everyone instinctively respects and admires him. So it shocks the world when he dose a complete 180. He gives Melkor pep talks, and then they debate ontology for 20000 hours till their servants have to threaten them with Greek fire because they need to work instead of rant about the meaning of life. As time progresses a Melkor becomes (finally) an arrogant bloodthirsty deity of terror, and Mairon becomes a master strategist and manipulator. But like, their still oh so very in love

I love how on Tumblr, "media literacy" has become "Um, just because someone writes about this doesn't mean they're endorsing this. I hate all these media puritans ruining everything."

I'm sad to inform you that knowing when and whether an author is endorsing something, implying something, saying something, is also part of media literacy. Knowing when they are doing this and when they're not is part of media literacy. Assuming that no author has ever endorsed a bad thing is how you fall for proper gander. It's not media literacy to always assume that nobody ever has agreed with the morally reprehensible ideas in their work.

Sometimes, authors are endorsing something, and you need to be aware when that happens, and you also need to be aware when you're doing it as an author. All media isn't horny dubcon fanfic where you and the author know it's problematic IRL but you get off to it in the privacy of your brain. Sometimes very smart people can convince you of something that'll hurt others in the real world. Sometimes very dumb people will romanticize something without realizing they're doing it and you'll be caught up in it without realizing that you are.

Being aware of this is also media literacy. Being aware of the narrative tools used to affect your thinking is media literacy. Deciding on your own whether you agree with an author or not is media literacy. Enjoying characters doing bad things and allowing authors to create flawed or cruel characters for the sake of a story is perfectly fine, but it is not the same as being media literate. Being smug about how you never think an author has bad intentions tells me you're edgy, not that you're media literate. You can't use one rule to apply to all media. That's not how media literacy works. Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! Aheem heem. Anyway.
