Me trying to figure out how long it took to make Scooby Goes Hollywood for maximum emotional impact and getting nothing from Google
Do we think it took longer than three months
#aaaagghhh#blah#because like OKAY. i would just like to know if goes hollywood is a post scrappy or a pre scrappy invention#because like it was aired pretty much 3 months after the introduction of scrappy in sept 1979. and it was the first time scooby had done#anything remotely like it. its less than an hour long. but the level of care and quality put into it is WELL beyond the level of any scooby#before it (or after it until the mid 90s tbh)#it had original (ish) music. it had around 10 different parodies of popular media. it had the most successful scooby metanarrative pretty#pretty much ever. it feels like a goodbye. and in a way it very much is.#and im just curious how much the introduction of scrappy and sd's dire situation played a role in the shaping of this film.#because like do we think this was a film concieved as a farewell to scooby as a continually producing franchise? do we think its one to#mark the end of the classic era and welcome the scooby to come after? like what is the INTENTION behind it and how was the message altered?#THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO KNOW.#because like scooby really was the only hanna barbera to survive continually. shows like yogi and the flintstones the jetsons etc had their#two three seasons and then were keot alive culturally through reruns and saturday morning cartoons with a special released maybe once a#decade. and something something my generation and down really started becoming the death of that.#like with my age group it isnt as bad just bc we did watch cable as (young) kids there were just lots of options so less ppl were watching#stuff like that but ESPECIALLY once you get into streaming so many of those classic shows are not going to be as relevant EXCEPT for scooby#as it had the advantage of also producing new content at the same time as the reruns of old shows and movies. but that really is sometjing#so essential to an understanding of scooby in my opinion. its that folding of all these different versions of these characters from dozens#of sources into one picture. you cant just click a series and watch all of whats new or sdmi and get it. seeing things from all eras random#ly and folding it into your image of scooby as a whole is something SO essential to the experience the way i lived it and its one i feel is#hurting in the streaming era. anyways that got super off topic uh buy old compilation dvds from 2007 and wb or cn or hbo or whoever owns#scooby now online let me compile themed groups of eps and movies from all different eras#there should be a winter scooby themed group with stuff from way all thru be cool (and guess if applicable) amen good night#im so surprised i didnt run out of tags there wtf

started autistically vibrating the second i read your answer lmfao. i was thinking cartman or tweek myself tbh, those bitches are both just PRIMED for it imo. i tend to lean towards a lot of abduction experiences being some kind of extreme reaction to other earthly trauma, but that really doesnt seem to fit every account so idk what the fuck is going on. god though dude *puts on homemade MUFON lanyard* i am SO SO SO CURIOUS to hear about your/your fam's weird experiences if you ever wanna share, i saw some questionable shit when i briefly lived out in Ohio myself. gone back and forth on the legitimacy of it all over the years, one of those things that's like, the more you research the less you Know.
Okay bro, I gotchu. I NEVER get to talk about this shit so imma fuckin go wild
Ight, so legit everybody in my mfin family got some shit to say- I tried to pry my brother's experiences outta him, but he is dogshit about answerin questions. Just know that he got some stories from when he would go campin n shit (even though he has funny ass stories from when he was outta his mind fucked up, there's still a lotta sober experiences he's got too)
1st, my dad: his stories are kinda vague too bcuz we don't talk, but from what he has told me in the past, he has 2 moments in his life he was certain was alien activity. Both of these take place in Texas (but when he was still livin in Ohio, he did say he'd seen some weird shit). The first is when he was movin to Oregon, n he was drivin late at night through Texas. Not a soul on the mfin road n he's in buttfuck nowhere. He said that there was this huge fuckin flash of light from above n his truck completely shut off. Like, the mf was still rollin at the same speed, but nothin it was like the car itself just kinda switched off (no engine, no lights, no music, nothin). He's tryin to start it up over n over, not really sure what the hell was goin on- so he's tryna pop the clutch seein as he was still movin. But this shit would NOT turn the fuck over. Until after he was gonna give up, slowly brake n just pull off to the side, but before he even attempted, the truck starts up again n continues on like nothin even happened.
His second experience I don't remember as well, so sorry about that. If I fuckin recall my dad n his band were just finishin up a show n were just chillin behind the bar smokin. One mf points out that there's this weird fuckin plane over some buildings on the horizon. Like, it just wasn't movin right? He said it seemed to be movin in a really slow zig zag pattern (but it wasn't like a drone, this this was way too big n it was the mid-90s). They kinda brush it off bcuz it's late as hell n they're all pretty shitfaced. But he said that it lasted in that area for about 10 more minutes, just movin back n forth until he looked away for a minute n it was just gone.
He's also told me about how on his late night drives in dead places, he's seen a shit load of random light infront of him shootin into the ground, n this is especially fuckin freaky to me bcuz I got a very similar thing that happened not that long ago. It's explained in my individual experience.
My mom n grandma: My gma might have some more, I feel like she had told me somethin. This one is backed by both my mom n my gma (although my uncle was here too, he just doesn't associate w/ the family so maybe he'd have some input). My gma used to drive from across the whole U.S. ALL the fuckin time when my mom was growin up, like they always had these roadtrips bcuz my gpa was an abusive pos n they'd escape back to my greatgrandparents place. So they're in the more of the desert states (like New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, I just can't remember which). My mom is probably about 10 or so. It's full on daylight, unlike every other story I got, this is the only one where it is broad fuckin daylight out. There's nothin but desert for miles, it's just a long beige stretch. So when my mom saw somethin just hoverin in the sky, it stuck out like a sore thumb. My mom calls it out, which causes everyone in the car to just watch it. My gma doesn't stop drivin, but she slowed down quite a bit, n she says that thing just fuckin sat there. Like, no movement whatsoever. It didn't look all that much like a plane, but they couldn't make out defined details. All they knew is that there is this plane adjacent aircraft just hoverin in the middle of the desert. They'd never seen anythin like it, despite all of them bein raised on military bases n seein a lot of kinds of military aircrafts (which is why this was ruled out). They kept drivin off but my mom said she just watched it through the window as it became smaller n smaller until it got too far away to see- but that shit never moved. It just remained hoverin in that same place.
Ight, Imma get into my experiences now, I got two with people n one that's on my own (that one is long as SHIT).
The first one is with me n my sisters (home in Oregon): This is around 2015-2016. It's the middle of the night in late April. We were chillin bcuz it was one of my sisters bdays n we were just talkin n watchin the stars. Now we live right next to an airport, so there are a shit ton of planes that go over, even late at night- but you can always tell those bcuz of the red lights n they're usually not that high up yet. We were just talkin tryin to find constellations bcuz it was a clear ass night. At some point we see these two lights. They're contained in these circular shadows WELL into the sky, but we could still make out a vessel that the light were on. 4 light on each circle. They're goin up n down the night sky back n forth completely parallel, so it seems like they're together. At first we were losin our shit, not able to explain what we were watchin. After some rational thought, we were like 'mfer we see satellites in the sky all the time, that's probably what these are' bcuz they were fuckin zoomin through the sky. We even see satellites pass over, but we kinda notice that they move n look a LOT different than the lights we were watchin. But every satellite's different yknow? That is until these mfs, the completely parallel movin in tandem lights all of a sudden both separate n go fuckin zoomin away from one another in the opposite direction. No longer up n down, but left n right. And then they're just fuckin GONE. Like, they sped off n never returned to the place they'd been for like 20 or so minutes. (Now I am willin to admit, that very well could be satellites, but it's still weird as fuck).
Here's one with me n my dad: This is around 2019. We were out in Utah, middle of the desert. This time it's probably closer to like 10-11pm. We were kinda just doin our own thing, sittin, thinkin about shit. When outta the fuckin blue, we notice this weird ass aircraft. Like, it low flying, large enough to be a fuckin cargo plane (doesn't look like one though), n movin super slow with a BRIGHT fuckin light slowly phasin in n out, illuminatin the craft. We're both losin our shit watchin this bcuz neither of us know what the fuck we're lookin at. Now this this was low enough that, if it were a plane, we would've heard it. But it was movin at the same speed which planes always appear to be when they're thousands of feet into the sky. But this was maybe 200 or less feet up. It was a really thick, aircraft that was slightly triangular in shape, but still pretty bulky. We couldn't see any engine or shit like that. We are legit fuckin shoutin like mad men, chasin this thing. At some point we try to call over the rest of the family, but we're slowly losin our visual on this thing. Everyone else is tryna look in the sky as my dad n I make a mad dash tryna keep an eye on it as it went behind some structure. But the second we got to a place where it should've been seen on the other side, based on its flight path, this thing was fuckin gone. Like, nowhere in the sky. It was like it was never there. To this day not sure what the fuck we were watchin bcuz we followed it for a good while, just for it to vanish.
Okay, now onto my final encounter (warning, this is a LONG mf bcuz it just happened in January, so it's fresh on my mind): I had decided to drive out to Sauvi island at like 1 am because I really wanted to go out and watch the water. But it was like the foggiest night in existence. It was during that period in January where every night was covered in this thick, heavy fog. I wasn't gonna let that stop me though. Even if I could barely see the road and almost crashed like 5 different times, I was determined. The drive itself was kinda ominous, but shit didn't start gettin weird until I actually reached Sauvi's. The second I reach the island, something just feels off instantly. I mean, no one's on the road of course, it's late, it's foggy. But I mean, it was DEAD. There was an alarming amount of roadkill everywhere (like fresh roadkill), and the entire island reeked of fuckin death, skunk, and mold. So I keep fuckin driving and just get the sense that someone was following me, like on my ass tailing me, but there wasn't any other cars or nothing. But I had the window down and swear I could hear some shit close to me. I'm driving and manage to miss my turn off to the beach. Here's where shit genuinely starts getting weird. Lights. Unexplainable lights ALL over. Now if this was a more populated area, I would assume some of this was street lamps, but the island doesn't really have that many (they have them in front of some buildings, but the roads are lightless). I kept seein "headlights" coming around turns that didn't exist. And when I should've been passing them, there was nothing there and the lights were gone. Okay, weird, but maybe it was my headlights reflection on the fog. Then I see fuckin taillights. I get confused because it looks like a car going up a hill, and I brushed it off before realizing that it was a wide open, flat road, and there was no hill or car in sight. I watched the lights turn into nothing and they were gone. At this point, I'm freaked out, but I'm still finding my way back to the beach. I manage to loop back around to the entrance of Sauvi's so I can take the right turn this time. When I tell you that the smell is worse and I even notice more roadkill. I would've seen any other cars on the road, but there was fuckin no one. And I know damn well that I wasn't the one who hit them. But I brush that off because I'm every white person in a horror movie. Not too long after, I saw the final unexplainable light I'd see that night. There was this small-ish, but abnormally bright light just kinda bobbing up and down infront of this post. I assumed it was some weird reflective thing, but as I approached it, it went up and then shot into the ground- the light completely disappearin into the ground. After I saw this, the feelin of bein chased was at a 100%, like I was stressin. I finally took the right turn, and there's this one fuckin shadow in the fog that I'm TELLING you looked like this tall fucking figure walking about. I legit stopped dead in my tracks to watch it, but this feeling of dread came over me, and I sped off. I finally make it to the beach, but I think I stayed for maybe 5 minutes or less? There was an extremely menacing feeling. Like it was THICK. I couldn't see the water it was so fogged out. I mean, it was beautiful. But it truly felt like I was being watched. There was little to no sound until I heard coyotes fucking EVERYWHERE. Like an insane amount. I head back to the car and they seem to shut up. I absolutely dipped the fuck outta there.
Now it is important to note with Sauvi's that there is maybe a supernatural element into that. Seein as Sauvi's, like most of Oregon n the U.S. was home to Native Americans (Chinook Indians specifically) n as we know, mfs just weren't allowed catch a break (to put things lightly). So there is more than likely some unrest in the energies n life of the island.
But yeah, there's a small collection of experiences in my family. I'd LOVE to hear your shit from Ohio. That place has some strange shit goin on there, like genuinely. Everytime I went to vist my dad's mom, that place just feels like somethins goin on there

i did it... i'm done. marooner's BYE
felt like it was easier than spawning grounds. took 90 shifts compared to 117. only huge struggle was the mid-600s
also: 25 maws away from 10k (and big shot is less than 200 from 1k wow)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i finally have them all... i remember at launch thinking maybe i could hit 999 under the right circumstances and now here i am having hit it 8 times (and 3 were 3 weekends in a row a few months ago, and 3 were all in the past week and a half). every time i was like "i shouldn't be doing this in freelance" ...but i did the entire thing freelance. wouldn't recommend it tbh. go find people to play with, i'm guessing it makes it more fun
now i can retire from salmon run. nah. still going to keep trying for at least all superbonuses every rotation for a while since that remains the best way to make money in this game. and i still need a shitload of all types of scales (currently at 5k bronze, 900 silver, 120 gold) so i want to keep fighting kings too
idk if i'll get any gold boss badges besides maws considering the next closest ones are almost halfway there. 59 more joe seems doable, 1000 king badges probably aren't. and i've run the numbers for the gold grizzco points badge and if they don't do something to make it go faster it could take until after splatoon 4 releases before i get that. maybe splatoon 5
also want to keep up with all remaining big runs and eggstra work. and after missing eggstra work top 5% by 3 eggs i really want to try something other than freelance. might go look for that overfishing discord ive heard about and see if i can get used to playing with people before the next one of those events

Sixfonia Music Review
I don't really care for vtubers as a genre, but recently, I've been following this one vsinger group for their non-music content because "haha funy". After a while, I decided to listen to some of their songs because I'm a self-proclaimed music enjoyer, and the result was.... not good.
(I was initially gonna keep this off tumblr, but I have so much to say about their songs that I decided to review all of them here.)
First things first, 90% of their songs are normal straight boy love songs, so I won't be talking about their lyrics. Also, I feel like most, if not all of the instrumentals in their songs are done by computer simulations and not actual instruments, which is disappointing.
youtube
J0KER×JOK3R: This is the song they use in the end-cards of all their videos, so I've been forced to listen to the chorus A LOT. I didn't really like it at first, but it started growing on me, and one of the guys (the green one) screamed before the final chorus, and screaming always makes a song better.
youtube
SHALL WE GONG!?!? -1st battle-: Boy do I have stuff to say about this one. First, the word "Gong". The first thing it brings to mind is "dong". I think it's supposed to be the Mandarin word 攻, but since that's also a bl term for tops, I can only think of dirty things looking at the title.
Onto the actual song. It starts with an AI woman saying "This is not an ordinary record." You'd think that'd be enough of a red flag, but tbh... this song is actually kinda enjoyable for me. It's mostly rapping (something they do a lot), but there's another shout before the final chorus, which, as I said, always makes a song better.
youtube
eND oF FaNTaSY.: As a tumblr user, I cannot look at the sprites in this video without going "Little German boy????" When I first started listening to this one, I was like "wtf this is so good??" I like how the instrumentals actually get quieter during the chorus, and the flow is pretty good UNTIL the final chorus, where everything falls apart. They decided to raise the key, add in some jingles, and piano keys being pressed one by one, which ruins the song's vibe and makes it sound like an ice cream truck's jingle.
youtube
SCRaP&ReV0LuT1oN: This one's such a mess. They start, with no intro, by singing the chorus, which starts with "Let the opera resound," shaping it up to be a neo-classical song, but they started scat singing right after that?? Also, during the verses, I can't tell if they're singing off beat, or if the beat is off them. It's one of the most disjointed songs I've ever heard, but at least the chorus slaps.
youtube
絶対!キメツケ症候群: It's a goofy 47-second song. Not much to say besides that.
youtube
Can We Jazz?: No, we can't. This is the point where I realized they really like starting with vocals and no intro. The beat is really loud and I don't really like the melody, but it doesn't sound outright ugly like some of their other songs. Overall mid.
youtube
六陣革命: This one's lit. Not many funny things to say about this. The visuals are inspired by the taisho period, which is... not good (also another can of worms that I can make a whole different post about), but if you're willing to ignore that, it's a really solid song.
youtube
ただ想う、君がため。: It's a really good ballad. Beautiful melody. The harmonies (?) during the chorus are a bit too loud compared to the main melody, but that's easy to get used to after a few listens. Funny though, how this is, iirc, their only song with no rap break, even though ballads with slow rapping do exist, and they seem to put rapping in every song they can.
youtube
6-4-Sweets: This one's just mid. Not much else to say.
youtube
「好き」のかくれんぼ: I know the EXACT vibe they're trying to go for, but damn, does this just sound bad. I don't like comparing artists with each other, but this sounds like a cheap rip-off of AKB48's Iiwake Maybe and other similar songs, so why would I listen to this (which doesn't even have a good chorus), when better songs with the exact same subject and vibes exist?
(I can't post anymore videos, so I'll be continuing this in a reblog)

a fic rec list that quite literally no one asked for
I’ve felt incredibly uninspired lately with fic. It’s a shit feeling. I may just be done writing. TBD. But as I’ve been sitting around trying to determine my feelings on fic, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about how I read fic. I’ve been reading it for awhile. I like to think that even in the 5SOS space, I’ve read a really good variety of things. So I wanted to make note of the fics that come to mind when I think of fics that have inspired me/made me feel something/are just really good. This probably will not be very organized and I apologize for that now.
I’ve been very VERY lucky to get to know a few of the folks whose works I mention here. I feel so grateful to have had even small glimpses into your creative processes. Just before the world Stopped a couple years ago, I was shuffling toward a mindset of writing off fan fiction as a thing of my younger years and I’m thankful that so many people metaphorically hit me over the head with their incredible works.
there’s some 1D, 5SOS, Shawn Mendes, and also solo 1D boys in here. i think a lot of them are at least a touch nsfw at points but not all of them? yeah. i think everything that is is noted of on the pages they link to? certainly not an exhaustive list of my favorites but these were the ones on my mind today.
Okay, in probably a really strange, completely non-linear order, here we go.
sugar on the asphalt by @justanchorandhope
I genuinely cannot even begin to describe the love in my heart for this fic. this is the fic (and writer tbh) that kept me around on tumblr in 2013 and is the perfect example of everything i loved about 1D fic back in the day. an OC to die for, the perfect dash of so many different tropes, CUPCAKES, southern charm, it has it all. just the sweetest cast of characters. i cannot believe i was 15 when this fic was first posted and now i’m 24 and re-reading this still feels like a curling up with a cup of tea at the end of a long day.
okay basically everything written by @harryandmolly but specifically the following:
like the back of my hand + fear and loathing in mandeville canyon
okay so fun fact i was so thrown off the first time i read the first fic listed there (the second one listed is a sorta AU of the first one taking place in early pandemic/lockdown times btw) bc the OC’s bff uses the exact same nickname i used in high school. okay but Lilly is a GOD TIER OC. i love a story that takes place over a really long period of time + really shows the progression of a relationship. also super random but as a woman in my mid-20s with crazy unrealistic dreams of living in a big gorgeous house with all my friends, the descriptions of the house Lilly lives in make my heart sing. for a story that takes place in a totally normal version of the world, the world building (maybe the wrong term here idk) in this is so great.
i could write it better than you ever felt it
three words: warped tour au. no but seriously there’s this blanket of nostalgia over this whole fic bc of the setting that is so fucking fun (she says having never gone to warped tour but shhhhh). another bright and brilliant OC, SO many lovable side characters, really driving plot. reading this feels like summer in all the best ways. (+ a brilliant sequel of sorts.) perfectly captures silly punk boys + hayley williams is there just being the goddess that she is. my introduction to jasey rae lol. so many things and all of them so great.
the emancipation of ginny
got momentarily distracted reading the teaser sorry i’m back now. ginny: bad ass and gorgeous business woman lady navigating being the assistant for an international pop star who is also her ex. andrew gertler is so stressed the whole time. i like a story that jumps around in time and this one does it in such a unique way. the writing in this is STUNNING, i feel like i am in every scene feeling the misty fog in london and the sun in my eyes on a summer festival tour. a Masterpiece imo. also the niall in this is wonderful in all the ways he can be + taylor swift shows up for a minute.
perfect teeth by @stylesmoothie
why yes i am in fact linking you to MIBBA bc 1DFF was the only other place to really find this i think rip to our fallen hero and what a throwback adlskfjdsl. i am NOT joking when i say that i literally cried when people started reblogging around the final update for this a few years back bc it had been like 5 years since this fic was updated. this fic holds such a special place in heart (as so many 1D fics from this era do). ezra is a brilliant OC and her story is SO GREAT. something i loved about ~this era~ of 1D fic was how expansive the backstories for the OCs were and ezra’s especially just made me fall in love with her. i remember that reading the conclusion to this story (so many years after starting it) felt like this beautiful sense of closure. i had very few constants in my later teenage years but stories like this one were one of them. love love love this story.
(took a brief pause so anna and i could hunt down an old zayn fic from back in the day slkdfjlds leesh came to our rescue bless her)
nom de plume by @stylesprimes
another fic that truly feels like it just? defined an era of my life???? (just had to do some internet wizardry to verify this was a 2014 fic lol) another OC with just the most sick backstory and story told throughout the fic. in this era of fic i was a HUGE fan of the harry styles london indie crew kinda fic. could not tell you why aside from how fucking cool i thought alexa chung was. you really get to see everyone make mistakes and grow in this story which i really admire from both a reader and a writer standpoint. like that’s not easy to do sdlfkjdsl. i love all the twists and turns and it’s a story i love returning to every once in awhile. cecilia’s experiences in this are so so unique and i’ve never really read anything quite like this story. the dynamic between the characters and just the overall vibe of ndp has always been so novel. i love it.
scene 14 by @daydadahlias
this FIC OH MY GOD. so backstory: i feel like i was the last person to read jess fic esp this one like. i was so intimidated by the fact that everyone had already read this and i had all of this knowledge of the vibe and how much everyone loved this that reading this almost felt like being introduced to a friend of a friend, ya know? this fic is Stunning. like i didn’t think it would be possible to be so impressed by college au world building at this point in my life (i’ve been reading college AUs for like. literally over a decade) but this little world that jess created was SO immersive. these characters were all so bright and i loved and cared for each and every one of them despite how many there were. i laughed, i cried. reading this reminded me why i love fan fiction and i feel so SO grateful to be in this fic space at the same time as jess.
love would burn this city down for you by @calumcest
helen has shared so many amazing stories but this one is always going to be my favorite. there’s so much soul and heart and love in this short little piece. i barely have the words for it. i started writing myself bc i felt inspired by the space that helen was helping to create a couple years ago and it’s pieces like this that i think had a lot of influence on the style i would try to adopt in certain ways. she’s so great at showing love in the little, quiet ways. pieces like this one feel like a secret and i’m so thankful i get to be in on it.
another night of takeout by @roselirry
lol i’ve had the second part of this bookmarked on my computer for MANY years and just realized there was a third part to it i had never read. this is a niall fic, little slices of three different days from the perspective of Vee, niall’s assistant in a solo era world. reminds me of a lot of the reasons i love the emancipation of ginny. one of my favorite tropes, a bit of that ‘omg they’re so in love but just refuse to really fully acknowledge it’ kinda situation. only three little bits in this but through the bits of background you get such a FULL story (despite the fact that it’s technically not finished i think?). SUCH a comfort read, i’ve read this so many times that it feels like a cozy, worn cardigan. (also i’ve historically been SUPER picky with my niall fic and this one has really stood the test of time for me)
all the things yet to come by soysauceharry
so i’ve never been a big self insert fic kinda girl. i think i just started out with OC fic so it was just this foreign thing to me for so long. i’m also a very big character person so when a character is really vague for the purpose to trying to be easy to fit a variety of looks and/or personalities into, i struggle to find enjoyment in it at times. but jesus christ, this story is cool. for me, reading this story gives the vibe of like a dream where you’re watching yourself do something? so despite the fact that it’s written in the second person, i don’t feel like i’m watching the story from the eyes of the OC. also despite all of the ‘you’s i just have never read this as a true self insert. i have an MC in my head that is very much a unique character. If you dance with me darling, if you take me home… Will we talk in the morning? by @kaleidoscopeminds
i love a meg fic for so so many reasons. i love this one especially bc the tone of it to me feels like how you tell the story of a fun night out. it feels fun and silly like the stories you tell the night after the night out about all the wild shit you did in the early hours of that same day. i’ve always been very fond of this fic because meg posted it when i was feeling very VERY down about the world and it just made me smile. this fic feels like laughs after shots idk how to describe it just good fun. she is the cake QUEEN but i always found so much inspo in her earlier lashton pieces. they remind me of all the good things about summer 2020. i’m glad they can still take me back to those times of first getting to know some of the folks that i just love so dearly now (baggy salt forever <3)

This is gon' be a long post, yo. It's about Super Mario RPG (+ the remake) and Another Crusade. (with SGtWS being the bonus point, lol)
Now, I should probably say this:
I have not heard about Another Crusade until just a couple of days ago so I've known about this until AFTER I got super hyped about the SMRPG Remake. ^^; That said, I would like to talk about it in a fair standpoint. :0
I'm also going to bring up my own project, Seven Guidances to Wishful Safety, as an example of how I took inspiration from Super Mario RPG as well.
But yeah, let's get around to it. ^^
As everyone and their grandmother knows, Super Mario RPG is getting a remake that will release in November and all of us that had been waiting for what felt like eons got super hyped about that! The fan artists raised up like there was no tomorrow (Not to say there was a shortage of fan art but it surely HAS increased since the announcement)
youtube
In fact the only think I am sorta missing is the overly long subtitle "Legend of the Seven Stars". Like I get it, it was a thing the west added when the original was ported over to the states back in the mid '90s and they are not doing that for the remake but still! ;w; Ah well, that's just one thing I'll miss but other then that...HYPE!! :D
But there is a indie game I heard about that has been in development for a couple of years and that game is Another Crusade:
youtube
Now, I will say that the game does look cute! And from who I'm seeing for far, it seems to capture elements of the gameplay that SMRPG has.
With that said... boy do I feel a lil sorry for it. Like, it probably would had a little more hype surrounding it, had it finished a little earlier. (That said, I get that the devs wanted to take their time with this game and a month ago is probably the best earliest announcement time they could do. ;;;;.)
And in all fairness, it was in development for a couple of years and during the beginning, we didn't know SMRPG was coming back. We just assumed that it would have been a faded memory until June of THIS YEAR. ^^;
Hell, to put myself out there, I've literally made a fanime that has basically similar plot elements to SMRPG and that is Seven Guidances to Wishful Safety!!
youtube
This was made back in 2019!!!!! Granted, there were many factors the fell in place for this series existence:
This was for the 2019 Fanime Weekly Challenge, and what I initially planned for said challenge didn't go as well as I hope and had to make changes. I had to think of a story QUICK
TBH, I was a lil' petty towards Nintendo and Square Enix for not giving SMRPG much attention during that point (again, before the remake was announced.)
And the key differences between SGtWS and SMRPG is the fact that the former is sort of an isekai/multi-ream type of story, whereas the latter had most of the characters be the locals in the world itself (minus Geno and especially the Smithy Gang)
So really, even if I was a little more critical of Another Crusade, I know I am not one to criticize because... well, just look at Seven Guidances.
So yeah, even though I very much really want the SMRPG Remake (as well as my own Switch for that matter!!!!), I would also like to give Another Crusade a chance! :0 Since it is on Stream (as well as other platforms), I'll add it to my Steam.
Seems tho that AC is going to release around a couple of days (September 15th) so I could probably give this a chance early while I wait for the SMRPG remake.
I know there are probably going to be some folks being a little more critical of it than I am and I can understand but for me, I want to give it a fair chance. (Again, I am certainly now one to criticize, FDSGOJFDBOTR)
So, yeah, that is my essay like weird take, lol. Hope you enjoy reading and have a good one. ^^

haikyuu!! boys with a s/o that becomes clingy/affectionate while drunk
characters: kyōtani, kenma, iwaizumi, matsukawa and bokuto
thank you anon for this marvellous request mwah
ALL CHARACTERS ARE AGED UP!
tw// drinking, suggestive themes, sexual references, swearing
Tumblr media
Kentarō Kyōtani
kyōtani was used to having a cool, laid-back s/o who was just as awkward about physical touch as he was
i mean, that’s kinda a part of the reason he liked you so much - so y’all could get over your awkwardness together
so imagine his surprise when his usually level-headed, calm s/o came stumbling out of the club, a blubbering mess and threw themselves into his arms, wailing something about a maths test
THE AMOUNT OF EMOTIONS THAT FLOODED HIS MIND IN THAT ONE MOMENT OMFG ADFGHJKL
he was like ‘omg why are they touching me? i kinda like it- wait are they crying? tf? i ain’t ever seen them cry before- should i help them? lord everyone is looking at us now. so what the fuck do i do- AYE DON’T TOUCH ME THERE’
so he had no choice but to dip with you flung over his shoulder lol
he took you back to your shared apartment and forced you to drink some water and instead of ordering a take-out, he just gave you his leftover burrito which he took to the club smh
it was probably cold
but that was the best he could think of at the time bc he simply needed to shut you up with food bc the alcohol in your system was causing you to become especially touchy, hence resulting in kyōtani getting especially aroused
but the last thing he’d do is fuck you while you’re drunk and i firmly believe that despite the fact kyōtani is a bit of a lout - he still has like a basic moral compass
but i mean if you kept being so damn suggestive then it was gonna be a lot harder for him to resist his urges
you were rubbing him up and shit, calling him every pet name in the book so ofc he just stuck a burrito in your mouth and went ‘stfu 😡’
the painful part was that he was silently enjoying it too (┬┬﹏┬┬)
(though, he was red from blushing lol, not anger)
and he wasn’t used to it either so obviously he was gonna get flustered, i mean, everything was happening all at once
oh and you told him ‘i love you’ and he literally combusted like lord have mercy on this man
just that morning you were calling him your ‘annoying rat boyfriend’ (jokingly, ofc) and now you love him?-
that wasn’t the first time you told him that you loved him but he was still blushing none the less
and he stammered out a ‘love you too’ PRAYING that you wouldn’t remember any of this the following day
anyway, he cuddled you to sleep and railed you as soon as you sobered up - the end ❤
Tumblr media
Kenma Kozume
pov: you’re kenma happily being a wallflower in the club then your s/o approaches you, demanding for you to fuck them
- ok, end of POV -
anyway, your speech was slurred so kenma wasn’t really sure if that was what you were asking him to do but if it was, he would’ve happily obliged if it wasn’t for the fact you were clearly drunk
mans was blushing though
bc y’all hardly ever do it but now - all of a sudden - you were tightly wrapped around him, garbling erotic threats into his ear
kenma was worried at first but you were like..really weak
so it wasn’t hard to get you off his torso, usher you out of the club and grip your hand as he ordered a taxi
also kenma had read enough wattpad fanfictions to know how to deal with someone while they’re drunk
but none of those fanfictions ever mentioned a single thing about how to deal with yourself while your partner is drunk
like seriously..he was in pain
both from the throbbing erection he had and the aching embarrassment he felt - both stemming from the fact you tried to give him a lap dance in taxi ✋ please oml
anyway, he took you back to his apartment and insisted that you have a few slices of the left-over pizza in the fridge along with a glass of water
after you changed into your pyjamas, you had clearly sobered up slightly as you could now compose coherent sentences
but that wasn’t any better for him bc now you were draped over him, whimpering into his ear about how much you love him
‘i’m so lucky to have you, kenma. i love you so much. you remind me of my first cat - you’re such a cat- i mean, blessing..you’re such a blessing.’
ngl, at that point he would be at a loss for words, just deciding to hug you until you fall asleep
like he finds it so cute that you’re finally opening up to him about how you feel as you’re usually quite composed and restrained
but also- what does he do now?
you eventually fell asleep in his arms and the next day, you woke up to kenma having made breakfast and telling you how much he adores you which was..confusing, to say the least
he told you about how you acted when you were drunk and to say you were embarrassed would be an understatement
also, he’ll tease you about it for the rest of your life ;)
Tumblr media
Hajime Iwaizumi
literally all you had to do was send him a text like ‘iwa...,,.,...ily so mycj ❤’’ and he’s already waiting in the line to get into the club lol
he marches in there, finds you, grabs your hand and drags you home
let’s hope that your friends know what iwaizumi looks like so they don’t have to just watch a random guy haul you out the club-
and tries to act all like angry iwaizumi >:( but when you are trailing behind him, muttering about how amazing he is, he becomes more like angy iwa grrr (* ̄︿ ̄)
by that, i mean that angry iwaizumi would bring you home and lecture on how irresponsible it is to get so intoxicated
but angy iwa just takes care of you but with a disapproving scowl
and angry iwaizumi would make nasty, bitchy remarks about how inappropriate your outfit is
while angy iwa would be like ‘babe, your outfit is lovely but maybe wear something different next time, idk....’
either way, he takes good care of you
he makes sure you eat (and he cooks good food btw - he doesn’t make you eat leftovers lmao)
he lets you change into more comfortable clothes
he ensures that you don’t die in the shower
and he forces you to go to bed
but all of that is rather difficult when you’re clinging to him like your life depends on it, raving on about how sweet of a boyfriend he is and covering his face sloppy kisses
his original plan was to go train some more in his gym (yes, there is a gym in y’alls house-) but when you were peppering his cheek in kisses, begging him to stay with you for whatever reason, of course he didn’t have the balls to leave
 so he ended up laying like a log in bed as you cuddled up to him like koala, resting your head in his chest and allowing him to run his hand through your hair as you slept
in that moment - as he stared down at your tranquil figure - he realised how grateful he was for moments like these, as he finally got see a side of you that he knew you’d almost never exhibit when you’re sober
like yeah, you often tell him how much you love him but he can always tell that it’s as if you’re setting aside your pride to say such a thing but now, you’re gushing on about it with the most genuine look in your eyes, he can tell that you’re being completely sincere
and to say that he adores it would be an understatement
so yeah, you were kind of a pain while drunk but you were also the most adorable thing that iwaizumi had ever laid his eyes on (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
Tumblr media
Issei Matsukawa
ok so the only reason matsukawa wasn’t getting drunk with you was bc the first time y’all got drunk together he got fined for public indecency and you got done for public intoxication
so you decided that it was best (for your wallets) if you took turns getting tipsy
emphasis on ‘tipsy’ bc you both went to the bar together (along with a few friends) and you promised matsukawa that you’d only have a few drinks
so please explain to him why he is now having to carry you bridal style out of the bar because you are too hammered to walk properly
and he was kinda grumpy bc he had to leave his friends mid-conversation bc not only were you pestering him but also, the erotic things you were whispering in his ear caused him to get a boner
and he was getting weird looks from people as he carried you home but that was the least of his problems tbh- he didn’t even notice lol
the biggest issue on his mind rn was the fact that you made him hard yet you can’t help him bc you’re drunk smh
like he was tempted at first bc you seemed down to do it but he quickly came back to reality and realised how morally incorrect that’d be
so he was mumbling curses the whole way home just to tune you out bc if he paid any more attention to the racy promises you were muttering in his ear- he’d explode
he’s alright at taking care of you like he isn’t iwaizumi’s level of caring but he’s a close second, i mean he’s gotten drunk plenty of times so he knows the basics
he was like ‘drink water idk lol ’
anyway, once he handled himself he wasn’t too fazed by your lustful advances
and he was so smug about it too deadass like ‘keep talkin’ me up, (y/n), you ain’t getting shit until you’re sober.’
smh ANYWAY he thinks you’re so charming when you’re like lovey-dovey drunk but SO annoying when you’re horny drunk bc like- he can’t get some (T_T)
Tumblr media
Kōtarō Bokuto
best for last 👌
ok anyway he’s an athlete and he doesn’t need alcohol to have a good time- he’s forever drunk tbh- drunk on life :)
so while you’re getting hammered with your pals, he’s doing stupid shit while sober lol
once you both rendezvous outside the club to head home and you’re absolutely steamin- he’s just like ‘hi, babe! how’s your night been?’
SO OBLIVIOUS OML
anyway, he drives back to y’alls house and since you’re fatigued at first, you spent 90% of the car ride sleeping
but when you get home, more awake, you’re all up on him
but you’re not like sensual drunk- more like..emotional drunk but with love 🥺
so basically you are sobbing into his chest about whatever and bc he is an such empath he will start crying too, or at least get a bit emotional
you could say something like, ‘omg, bo. i hardly get to see you because you’re at work so often- i wish i could spend more time with you. i miss you so much’  ╯︿╰
and he would deadass reply whole-heartedly while weeping into your shoulder, ‘I’M QUITTING VOLLEYBALL, (Y/N)!!’
(ok, so maybe he was a bit tipsy too- but like..definitely not has drunk as you)
he has no idea where to start when it comes to taking care of you but he tries (´◡` ‘)
at the very least, he ensures that you don’t having any more alcohol and that you don’t die somehow
he’s v overprotective though
you could be getting a fork to eat your instant-noodles with and he’ll be like
‘apologies ✋ but i cannot allow you to handle such a dangerous weapon while intoxicated. maybe eat with a spoon instead, idk.’ /h
other than that, he just cuddles you to sleep and deals with you in your badly hungover state the next day

Abridged history of early 20th century Chinese womenswear (part 1: 1890s & 1900s) *improved version
Tumblr media

*I’m fixing and reposting the first two posts of this series because back then I had no idea how Tumblr formatting functioned and they deserve better. I’m keeping the shoddy original versions for archival purposes.
*After some thought I think it makes more sense to group the 1890s and 1900s together.
Other posts in the series:

Part 6.2: 1950s-mainland China
Intro & context
In order to understand early 20th century Chinese fashion we have to go back a bit into the past to have some clue about the context. When the Manchus conquered China and established the Qing Dynasty in the mid 17th century, Han Chinese men adopted Manchu style clothing but Han Chinese womenswear remained independent and separate from Manchu womenswear. Han Chinese women retained the habit of wearing a two piece ensemble as the outermost layer, unlike Manchu women, who wore a single floor length robe. I will be only discussing Han Chinese women’s fashion in this series.
In the 19th century, Han Chinese women wore 袄裙 aoqun, a two piece ensemble consisting of a robe and a skirt. The robe had a very low 立领, standing collar. In the second half of the 19th century, the robe in aoqun had a very generous and roomy cut and huge sleeves, a look which reached its peak in the 1860s and 70s. The hem of the robe hit the knees, the length in vogue since the 1870s. The collar of the robe is very low, only providing enough space for one button, likewise in fashion since the 1870s. The robe is closed with 盘扣 pankou, which in this era were always plain with either a bead or fabric knot tip. The robe closes at the side, usually at the right side at the 大襟 dajin, the side closure, however examples of robes with closures on the left also existed. Robes with closures on both the right and left were also a thing, a style called 双襟 shuangjin, double closure. Shuangjin robes were derived from a men’s riding vest, the 巴图鲁坎肩 batulu vest (batulu is Manchu for “warrior”), that could be opened from both sides, and would experience a revival in the 1920s.

1870s/80s photograph of a group of women in aoqun, the two skirts on the left are the elaborate mamian style, the one on the right is plain.
In aoqun, the skirt was usually of a style called 马面 mamian, made of two long horizontal pieces of pleated fabric with two flat sections each sewn to a waistband with one flat section overlapping, creating a wrap skirt that once worn around the wearer’s waist, appears to have two unpleated sections, one at the front and one at the back. This skirt was very decorative in the 19th century, full of embroidery, tassels and elaborate trim, sometimes giving the illusion of a separate apron being attached (I’ve seen this weird stereotype that traditional Chinese womenswear has a separate apron at the front this is complete bogus). The robes were likewise heavily decorated around the seams, ceremonial outfits like wedding gowns could be so full of embroidery that the original fabric is hardly to be seen.
The combination of robe and pants, 袄裤 aoku, was also a common way of dressing since approximately the 1800s or 1810s. This combination would become the norm in the 1890s.

1870s/80s photograph of a woman in a ginormous ao, roomy pants and with bound feet.
Another noteworthy fad was bound feet. The middle of the 19th century was the pinnacle of foot binding and fashionable women had incredibly small feet, dubbed “lotus feet”. This was achieved by wrapping tight foot binding cloth around the feet since childhood and restricting the growth of the feet, I think also breaking a couple bones in the process. Women wore foot binding cloth and baggy stockings underneath their shoes, tied up with garters below the knees. Foot binding is said to severely restrict mobility and cause intense pain; I don’t doubt the pain part but I’m not sure about mobility since I’ve seen plenty of photographs of women with bound feet roaming about the streets.
Not every woman did foot binding though, it depended heavily on region, class and the individual family. For one, Manchu women all had natural feet. For Han women, an account from the 1850s said that in Beijing, every five or six out of ten women did not have bound feet, and that probability is three or four out of ten in the countryside. In the provinces along the southern coast, most women did not bind their feet (this probably has to do with the influence of indigenous cultures in the south, since foot binding was primarily a Han fashion), whereas in the northwest almost every woman had bound feet. By the way, I really don’t like how articles on foot binding describe it in the most sensational way possible, why is it so hard to approach history with peace of mind? And it pisses me off that all the articles containing 1890s photographs only talk about the foot binding as if there is nothing more of value in portraits of whole ass women.
Anyway, if you are interested in learning more about foot binding, check out  Cinderella‘s Sisters: A Revisionist History of Footbinding by Dorothy Ko, recommended by @thefeastandthefast . Or just anything written by Dorothy Ko tbh.
Silhouette
In the 1890s, the cut of the aoqun began to become more slender and form fitting, commonly believed to be a result of westernization. But I think it’s also because the wide sleeve look has also been in fashion for quite a while now (some 80 years or so) and people were getting tired of it. The robe inherited the knee length hem from the 1880s but was less baggy and took on a more straight cut silhouette. The collar remained quite low until the end of the decade. Pants were overwhelmingly more popular than skirts in the 1890s, I speculate this may be due to a rising interest in feminism and women wanting more mobility, but aoku was also very popular in the 1870s and 80s in general so it may have also just carried over. The pants were still ankle length and straight cut but less roomy than earlier 19th century models. Overall the 1890s just looks like a shrunken and simplified version of the 1880s.

The aoku as of the 1890s.
By the second half of the 1900s, the collar began to rise, becoming medium height. This was kind of reminiscent of late 18th century Han women’s collars I mentioned in this post on Chinese standing collars. The robe and pants shrunk further, becoming quite tight fitting. The robe was still around knee length. The pants were especially tight and could be considered skinny. Foot binding became less common and many women had natural sized feet. However, since foot binding is something that begins in the childhood, the fact that many women without bound feet appeared in the 1900s meant that many parents started to reject food binding in the 1880s and 90s.

Design details
The 1890s saw the mass disappearing of wide, embroidered trims around the seams, popular throughout the 19th century. The use of multiple rows of binding/trim from the 1870s and 80s was continued, albeit in a much more minimalistic and geometric way. I’ve seen a lot of plain white ao finished with multiple rows of black binding of different widths, it’s mighty avant-garde and elegant. Because clothes of the era were still constructed in the older Chinese method, they had a seam down the middle of the sleeves used to extend the length of the sleeves; this seam could be bound and decorated but it was not compulsory. Actual embroidery on the robe and skirt/pants was rare, if not non-existent; completely plain fabric was the norm. The ao of this era commonly had a 厂字襟 (厂 shaped closure), where the front placket is held up by one or two buttons and then closed by more buttons down the side seam. This style of closure was first popularized for Han women’s clothing in the 1800s and 1810s, before that Han women’s clothing closures were a straight line from the collar to the armpit. The pankou used to close the ao of this period became a lot more elaborate and the main source of decoration; I have a whole ass post on them here. A general air of simplicity, comfort and proportionality dominated the fashion of this era. In the mid 18th century, Han women’s robes started having folded cuffs (possibly borrowed from Manchu court dress), called 挽袖 wanxiu, and these became fake and represented by a piece of trimming in the 1850s. By the 1890s this design feature largely disappeared, leaving the sleeve edges either plain or simply bound.

Three women in aoku, late 1890s. I looooove the look on the far left, I will probably make it some day.
Going into the 1900s, the geometric trims became more simplified and austere, while the pankou became increasingly ornamental.

Hair & Makeup
There were no significant changes in hairstyling in the 1890s, fashionable women would wear existing 1880s hairstyles but style them with bangs. A common style I’ve seen in photographs was long hair pulled back into either one big bun at the back or two smaller ones at the sides. The short bangs were usually very neat, precisely cut and sat closely to the forehead. Elastics did not exist, so Chinese women used strings and hairpins to tie their hair together. Hairpins of this era were usually very thick and sturdy, a single one was enough to hold all your hair into a bun. It was popular to use flowers and/or pearls to form a ring of decorations around a bun.

Common 1890s hairstyle, for most people the decorations weren’t so elaborate.
A popular headpiece was this thin headband adorned with pearls worn at the place where bangs should be, although that has been around since the 1870s as well.

Ca. late 1890s. Some women wearing the pearl headband.
Around 1905 the bangs began to grow in length but still weren’t long enough to cover the eyebrows. They were longer at the sides and shorter in the middle, creating this volume and curve at the forehead.

By the end of the decade these evolved into a being with a will of its own. Long hair tied into braids or low buns became fashionable instead of tight, high buns.

Fashionable women in the 1890s wore little to no makeup, because of the influence of female university students who were usually without makeup. In the 1870s and 80s, thick makeup was more common and was a trend popularized by sex workers in Shanghai, thus becoming increasingly considered indecent in the 1890s. I find this quite problematic cause respectability politics suck and there’s nothing wrong with wearing fashion trends invented by sex workers. All the straight male writers of the 1890s and 1900s praising female students for being “pure” and ”hygienic” in contrast to the supposedly nasty sex workers make me cringe to my core, it’s just pitting women against each other and setting us up for “I’m not like other girls” in my opinion.
The common makeup look includes white power, lipstick and blush. The lipstick shape was usually a tad smaller to the actual lips and blush was applied in large areas toward the outside of the face.

Standard 1890s and 1900s hair and makeup look. This drawing is probably from around 1902, it’s a bit more festive folk art than fashion plate so take the patterns with a dash of salt.
Undergarments
Unfortunately I don’t have many pictures for undergarments of the era but I can describe them to you. Since women commonly wore pants, they would usually wear another layer of pants (could be considered drawers) underneath that was of a similar construction but plain and easy to launder. Panties and such didn’t exist so drawers were the innermost layer, enough to protect women’s private parts. Likewise for the robe, another plainer, sturdier version would be worn underneath. In the mid 1900s, as the sleeves of the outer robe began to shorten, the undershirt became more form fitting at the wrists and could serve a decorative function.
Chinese women in the 19th century bound their breasts with long strips of fabric to achieve the flat look. I’m not exactly sure how this is done but basically you wrap fabric tightly around your chest until the boobies are concealed. A famous undergarment of the Qing Dynasty was the 肚兜 dudou, which was actually unisex. The female only version was called 抹胸 moxiong, 袜肚 wadu or 袜腹 wafu, the latter two are etymologically similar to earlier words for “corset” or “a pair of bodies”. However, unlike what many later 20th century artists would like you to believe, wearing only dudou on the upper body was not legit underwear for grown up women, as it was usually worn in conjunction with breast binders as an extra layer of warmth. It was also worn very tightly around the breasts and waist, not tied loosely like in paintings or period dramas nowadays.

Shoes
Women began campaigning against bound feet in this period and many drawings depicted women with natural feet. However, if a woman had her feet bound since childhood it’s difficult for them to return to their natural size, so some women who were born in previous decades would still have very small feet, even if they began to reject it at this time. Women’s shoes of Western construction weren’t yet so common so most women wore Chinese style shoes, which were commonly made of fabric and had a slightly upward pointing toe. Women with bound feet would use a long piece of ribbon/cloth to wrap their feet (to maintain the shape) and wear small fabric pumps with a white sole. These could be flat or have a teeny tiny bit of wedge heel, called 弓鞋 gong xie, bow shoes. Women without bound feet would wear normal sized pumps, likewise of fabric, with slightly upward pointing toes and a thick white sole. Embroidery on shoes was a huge thing in the 19th century and before but by the 1890s it started to disappear as well, and shoes in the 1890s were commonly plain. In the 1900s, Western leather shoes were increasingly popularized, but it wasn’t until the early 1910s that this popularity reached its height.

Woman with natural feet wearing Chinese style pumps. Western style knit stockings were becoming popularized in the 1880s for women with natural feet as well.
Some editing afterthoughts
I’ve been looking more into 18th and 19th century Chinese fashion lately and I realized I held some deep rooted misconceptions about the Qing Dynasty. For some reason I always considered the 1870s and 80s look with the elaborate, big robes conservative or backwards, which is really not fair. Chinese women’s fashion was revolutionized in the beginning of the 19th century, going from the flowy, slender robes of the 18th century to stiffer, more structured robes with flared sleeves. Styles also differed dramatically from decade to decade, it’s just not very well studied and there’s a stigma around Qing Dynasty fashion so people don’t get into it as much. Because Han women were allowed to continue wearing Han style clothing into the Qing Dynasty, a lot of 18th century reproduction ensembles nowadays get mistakenly labelled as Ming style hanfu, which really isn’t helping... I was definitely not alone in this though, the perception of Qing Dynasty Han women’s fashion most people nowadays have is: in the first couple years Han women were allowed to wear Ming style hanfu, but then bam the late 19th century look was forced upon everyone. This view is super not nuanced and false on almost every level, but it is extremely widespread and I don’t blame you at all if you also think like this, this was me just two months ago too... A wise woman (I mean Karolina Zebrowska) once said that everything in fashion history happens gradually, which is also extremely true for Chinese fashion history.
I’ve really started to question what modernity in fashion means because the elaborate 19th century Chinese look that white people back then considered the epitome of conservative Chinese clothing was actually new and exciting in the beginning of the 19th century. I can’t help but wonder if this view that Chinese clothing as of the 1870s and 80s was symbolic of Chinese culture’s “backwardness” and “stagnation” was a product of colonization and white imperialists’ efforts to demonize Chinese society and take things out of context. I would prefer to say that Chinese fashion westernized a lot during the 1890s and 1900s but not necessarily modernized because what is modernity. Fashions change and that is the most normal thing on the planet.
If you read what white historians or politicians wrote in the late 19th/early 20th century about Chinese fashion or culture (which I highly recommend you don’t, that shit is detrimental to your mental health), it becomes obvious that the majority of them have no clue what Chinese fashion looked like before the 19th century and how we got to what we had in the 19th century in the first place, so they just assumed that Chinese fashion always looked like that and that we haven’t progressed as a culture in hundreds of years lmao. Bullshit pseudo-Darwinism at its finest. Oh or if you look up 18th century European Orientalist paintings depicting imaginary Chinese characters, the clothes they wore and the hairstyles they had were so far off from what actual 18th century Chinese fashion looked like to the point they felt racist and were uncomfortable to look at. I stumbled across so many of them when looking for 18th century Chinese painting and every time I see one it almost gives me a stroke. So I think it’s really important to acknowledge that Han Chinese fashion of the 18th century is a valid field of study.
In my original 1890s post I said that the elaborate embroidery and trimmings started to appear on Han women’s fashion around this time because of Manchu influence, I take that back because I’ve realized it’s a whack claim. I’ll explain it more when I make some posts on the 19th century later.
Reworked part 2 is coming soon as well :)))

JBBSHJDJ JJK X HQ????? GOD BLESS. thank u so much for requesting this hope you like it!! <3
Tumblr media
kita shinsuke
kita’s not a nosy person. he always keeps to himself and stays out of people’s business, and he’s never been the type to encourage rumors or to dwell long on what if’s and theories and conspiracies
but even he had to admit your situation was weird
you enroll into inarizaki mid-year, and you’re a third year like him. at first he’d just assumed you’d moved from a neighboring high school last minute, but you never attempted to participate, as if you were only here for show. next, he’d assumed it had been familial issues, but he heard nothing of that, never saw you with a sibling or a parent or a guardian. it was all too. vague for his liking
of course, this amount of interest is unbecoming of kita. it’s just. there were so many questions to you and no answers. you really, really intrigued him, and okay, maybe he thought you were really pretty, and yeah maybe he did have a small crush on you, but that was besides the point!
the main thing is that you were just. sus.
he realized you weren’t really causing harm though, just quietly minding your business, so he did the same, and chose to ignore any nagging at the back of his mind
until he picks up on another weird habit of yours: staying at school until the latest hours. as involved as he was with school activities, he hadn’t heard you being a part of any club, considering how late you’d enrolled in school. but here you were, without fail, every day, by the school gates as the sun sets
the only reason so much attention was given to you from kita was because of how peculiar your case was. it frustrated him how he knew nothing, just your name after your brief introduction to the class, and the fact that there seemed so much to you. it’s not that you were simply a private, boring person. it couldn’t be, not with how secretive everything was
one day, on accident, he lags behind in the boys’ gymnasium, cleaning every volleyball with extra care and without noticing, the sun had set. under the assumption he was the only one in the gymnasium, after ensuring every and all equipment was in its place and clean, he grabbed the keys and started to head out. the gymnasium was quiet and dark, save for the gentle stream of moonlight and —
hm
whatever that thing was, it did not belong in the gymnasium
okay let’s assume kita can see curses because what is there that kita can’t do
i don’t think he’d panic outwardly, but he definitely would freeze up and just not know what to do
it didn’t look too friendly either. or sound friendly. or smell friendly
your appearance comes all of a sudden for him, but honestly, when you come barging in through the doors and you start battling the curse, he’s? not surprised?
like he figured you had a secret, just — who knew it would be this?
he’s honestly a little mesmerized with how you manage to fight it off and keep him out of harm’s way simultaneously, until you finally exorcise it
you’re breathing heavily after you’re done, since the curse had put up quite the fight against you, so kita, with his captain instincts, and with mobile feet again thankfully, comes up to you and asks if you’re okay
you look at him bewildered like??? am i okay??? are you okay???/
you’re a little concerned how unfazed he is by the curse tbh
after the adrenaline fades away, and you’re left standing in this dark, empty gymnasium with this really handsome guy, you finally find it within yourself to introduce yourself, telling him your name, before lifting up your hand to shake it with his, continuing, “and i’m a jujutsu sorcerer.”
kita smiles, there’s a part of him, an itch that’s been dying to get scratched, that’s finally relieved, and he takes your hand in his, shaking it firmly and saying, “kita shinsuke; pleasure to meet you.”
“pleasure’s all mine.”
he walks you home, and the entire time he realizes how you’re really the furthest thing from quiet, you’re just serious when you need to be, given your occupation. you explain the whole ordeal, about the manifestation of curses spiking in this area, how you’d been assigned this mission, everything.
it is so satisfying to him finally understanding everything. it’s like finishing a puzzle that’s taken months to complete
you admit that that had been the last curse, since you’d eliminated the source, and you’d have to leave soon
not without his number you’re not <3
kita’s not the type to want to show off his s/o, but once you inevitably become that, he takes every opportunity he can to watch everyone’s eyes as they see you kick ass. it’s his guilty pleasure :)
akaashi keiji
okay this one’s a little different because your arrival at fukurodani wasn’t so sudden. yeah you’d joined later than most students, but you’ve been here since the start of the year, so akaashi wasn’t suspicious of you, since you’d never given him a reason to be
he doesn’t see you outside of school often. honestly, he doesn’t even see you in school. you don’t share classes with him, so he doesn’t know if you skip classes or not, but he’s heard that you do. you’re also never like. anywhere. it’s most that he knows of you
he just assumed you were one of those careless kids that didn’t really give a shit about school, until he started seeing you. except, it was at the weirdest times, and the weirdest locations: sometimes it’d be behind the gymnasium where he practices volleyball, or it’d be in those sketchy alleyways where he was 90% sure people sold drugs there, sometimes he’d spot you on the roof of the school. it was so
odd?
akaashi’s a very curious person. he’s not nosy, he just has a very overactive imagination (i mean, literature department akaashi keiji? obviously)
so all this just made him unconsciously pay more attention to you. like, he didn’t want to, he just subconsciously did. any time he’d pick you out from the crowd, he’d find his eyes following you narrowly, or anytime he heard your name, his ears would perk up. he really didn’t mean it. you just kinda fascinated him, to the point of, maybe a crush? he wouldn’t really call it that, but yeah, he guesses the symptoms are of a crush
but anyways, this school was really boring! that’s why!
not a crush >:(
so! he’d been walking home one night, let’s say bokuto was with his family and there was no training for that day. it was winter, so the sun had set pretty early, leaving him in the paleness of the moonlight and the occasional streetlight illuminating the pathway for him. there wasn’t really anybody around, and he figured at a time like this people were either already home or still at work
until he heard a low growling noise
he didn’t really think much of it, only stiffening up a bit
but he told himself it was his mind playing tricks on him, or something he mistook for a growl, or maybe it was a growl and it was just some dog nearby. just tried to stick to rational thinking because what else would it be?? was there option for anything else?
until, out of nowhere, you appeared from an alley he just crossed past, and curled up against him, one arm hugging him tight, before you raised a hand to your lips and silently asked him to stay quiet
he was
very confused
like what the fuck
but then you shifted, spinning around him. curiously, he twisted around with you, and
damn
what the actual fuck
so it wasn’t a dog
the curse lunged at you, or maybe it lunged at akaashi, but you quickly kicked it away, sending it spinning, before you raised your hands up above you, ready to exorcise it, until it twisted unexpectedly and aimed at akaashi
it made you panic, and instead of focusing on exterminating the curse, you turned your focus on protecting akaashi, who was in momentary shock. or maybe it was awe. you weren’t sure. somehow, you fought with the curse, maneuvering your way around it and moving akaashi along with you. somehow, his hand was in yours, and he was letting you shift him right and left as you attempted to fight off the curse. god, what the fuck is going on
eventually, finally, akaashi ducked behind you, and you raised your hands above you again, quickly exorcising it. he watched from under his shielding arms as the curse — exploded? vanished? evaporated?
and without even missing a beat, you were kneeling before him, hands on his shoulders, shaking him wildly, asking is he’s okay
it kinda made him want to laugh at how panicked you seemed in comparison to how serious and scary you’d been a second before
akaashi finally answers that yes, he’s okay, but he demands an explanation, please, because he’s never been more confused
you continue to walk him home, with the lame excuse of “i’m your personal bodyguard now,” and explain everything to him. he’s. kinda. really amazed? like you thought he’d get thrown off at the reality of the world you and him live in but he’s actually really fascinated, and he listens to you talk the entire time, only speaking when he has a question
when you come to school the next day, you smile at him knowingly, waving at him and when bokuto sees him wave back with a small smile on his face, he combusts.
akaashi sorta really likes the idea of being the only one to know your little secret. something about it is so satisfyingly intimate, and the trust it conveys? he’s really honored, you know?
as your s/o, he gets really worried whenever you’re sent out on missions, but you always remind him that what brought you two together was you saving his ass <3
and then he’s reminded of just how proud of you and amazed he is hehe

79, 76 & 90 from the prompt list? Maybe something steamy?!
A/N: hey love, since you didn’t specify for who, I just assumed it’s for Tom hehe. Hope you like it <3
"If you're going to dress like that, I'm not going to let you out of my sight."
"Your lips are getting really close to mine."
"All I know is that if you don't tell me to stop I'm going to kiss you."
~~~
"If you're going to dress like that, I'm not going to let you out of my sight."
You couldn't help but furrow your brows at the lad who just walked into the kitchen, eyes glancing down at yourself to examine what you wore if it was in anyway offensive.
It was a simple, fitted black dress that stopped mid-thigh, a v-neckline and spaghetti straps adoring your upper half as the bottom sported a skirt that hugged tightly around your asset.
The back was low sure, and the slit on your thigh was a bit high but it wasn't too revealing, still leaving something for the imagination. The dress is what you'd normally wear when going to the club, which is where you're heading now in a couple minutes to meet the boys, so you have no idea why Tom felt the need to say what he said.
"Last time I checked you were my roommate, slash best friend. I didn't know bodyguard was added to your resumé as of recently," you joked, leaning forwards on the countertop as you scrolled through your phone.
If only you paid attention, you would've noticed the way Tom sucked in a breath, brown orbs glancing at your bent-over form as it turned a shade darker.
Does he have feelings for his roommate slash best friend? Of course he does. He has been for a while now. And seeing you in that sexy black dress, revealing just enough for his mind to go haywire, his judgment was slowly diminishing by the second. Even more so as his eyes trailed over your pushed out ass that was too accentuated by that dress for him to stay sane.
He quickly shook his head to rid of the thought, scoffing out loud to mask the lump that formed in his throat.
"I'm being serious though," he said in the most casual tone he can muster, walking over to the fridge to get himself a bottle of water. But before he could even grab one, the words that left your mouth made him halt all his movements completely.
"Then how am I supposed to get laid if you're going to be hovering over me?"
Jealousy coated every single nerve in Tom's whole body, nostrils flaring as he shut the fridge harshly, the loud sound making you jump and turn to him with a confused look.
Tom had no right to be jealous, he was completely aware of that, but he couldn't stop the strong emotion from rising up to his head, mind turning clouded as sauntered over to you with a stern look.
You stood frozen in your spot as Tom trapped you between him and the kitchen island without warning, arms resting on either side of you that there was nowhere for you to escape, his body so close to yours that you can practically feel the heat seep through your clothes.
The lad stayed silent as leaned closer, intense eyes never leaving yours, the look of anger on his face making you even more confused. But you can't deny that it made your insides churn as well, his scent intoxicating, the way he was staring you down with fire and desire was very overwhelming.
Tom is just too hot when he's angry.
"Your lips are getting really close to mine." you whispered under your breath, but given the proximity that you're in, there's no doubt that he can hear you. Hell, he can probably even hear the way your heart is beating so rapidly against your chest.
"Are you alright Tom?" you asked, trying to gauge what was running through his mind as you can see it clear in his eyes that he was deep into thought. Although it wasn't long for you to put two and two together, after all, you do feel the same way about him, the look he was giving you already familiar because you yourself have been staring at him in the same way on countless occasions.
"I don't know," Tom mumbled, voice low as his eyes stared right into yours with a certain gloss coating them. "All I know is that if you don't tell me to stop I'm going to kiss you."
You grinned at that, finger coming up to trace his jaw teasingly, muscle visibly clenching at your touch. "Well, I'm not stopping you anytime soon, so you better get it over and done with."
Tom didn't waste any time as he crashed his lips against yours with a low growl, hand gripping your waist tightly to pull you closer to his body. You wrapped your arms around his shoulder for support, fingers getting lost in his hair as your lips moved in sync with his in such urgency and hunger.
His hands traveled down your body, feeling each part deliberately until it landed right on top of your ass. You felt him smirk between the kiss before he gave each cheek a tight squeeze. You lurched forward with a gasp, Tom's tongue slipping into your mouth that's made you let out a soft moan right after.
Tom carefully maneuvered your bodies until you reached the living room, never pulling away from the heated kiss, never having enough of each other. Pushing you down to lay on the couch, he situated himself between your legs as you wrapped them tightly around his waist, a moan coming out of the both of you when his bulge pressed against your clothed heat.
Tom pulled away reluctantly to give in to his lung's need of air, supporting his body with his forearms for you to no get crushed by his weight. With him right on top of you, Tom had a moment of realization, a cocky smirk making it's way onto those beautiful lips as he said,
"Guess you're still getting laid with me hovering over you huh?"
A3 characters sorted into Mahoyaku Countries/Kingdoms
Tumblr media
If you follow me on twt (@/meclanitea btw), then you’d know how severe my mhyk brainrot is.
So me being me, I just had to sort a3 people into the countries. I have a basic description of each country below but tbh it’s very inadequate if you wanna understand so, like, join me in the mhyk brainrot. I wholeheartedly welcome you xD
So. If anyone has any other opinions, feel free to tell me because I love to talk (obvi hahaha)
Disclaimer: My opinion and all that jazz *jazz hands*. I took liberties for their ages because I could (bc they’re fictional characters :^]). The stories aren’t exactly complete but I’m not really building a full AU so it’s pine. And finally, we don’t really understand wizard genetics since wizards can be born from non-wizards and I’m guessing the other way around happens too? (we only have the flores brothers to go from after all)
Gonna start with the west the counter-clockwise to central
Western Kingdom: The eccentric wizards in love with art and have a unique interest in people
Yuki: Yuki is a west-born wizard and is a tailor. While not particularly interested in people themselves, he's interested in the different cultures and how it relates to clothes-making. He likes people telling him stories and doesn't care if they're made-up as long as he can draw inspiration from them (~early 20s).
Kazunari: Kazu is a south-born wizard who came to the west in his youth. He's an artist by trade and loves to interact with people of all kinds. He draws on the streets and leaves a little magic in his paintings (but not the one he gives to humans as western humans are wary). Back in the south though, they welcome his magical paintings (~60-70s).
Azami: Azami is from a strong family of wizards from the north. His father is the leader of a small but mighty bandit gang, comparable in strength to the legendary bandit leader Bradley. He escaped from the north to pursue his passion in make-up and uses his magic to create make-up with different attributes, as well as those that have different healing effects on the skin (~early 20s).
Misumi: Misumi is from a very isolated eastern family that actually originated from the west. He went back to where his late grandfather came from in hopes to find some peace with his memory. He loves interacting with others and his playful and energetic self is a hit in noble parties. His grandfather used to be a noble as well, but though their riches have stayed, they are not acknowledged by the Eastern Kingdom (~60-70s).
Taichi: A central-born wizard who had dreams of making a name for himself. Since he didn't stand out much despite all his hard work, he decided to start anew in the Western Kingdom and did a make-over with his hair and clothing style (~late 20s).
Homare: A western noble that despite being a wizard, is much loved and well-regarded for his poems. He uses his magic to add theatrics to his poem-readings (~500-600).
North Country: Wizards here are often powerful, isolated, and power-hungry.
Banri: A young wizard who had been powerful since birth. He was born into a long line of village leaders and he has several villages nearby submit to him for protection. Losing to a non-northern wizard, originally a /southerner/ at that really gave his ego a bit hit. (~late 30s)
Hisoka: An orphan wizard that lost his family in his teens (north natural disaster). He was taken in by August, a wizard mercenary for hire, and lived with him and Chikage. He disappears after an attack and is framed for killing his mentor, August. He lost his memories and wandered around the eastern Kingdom until he was found by Azuma. He retrieves his memories soon after being reunited with Chikage (~400-500).
Chikage: An orphan wizard who was taken in by a young August. He lived with August and Hisoka until August was killed and Hisoka disappeared (~400-500 but older than Hisoka).
Eastern Kingdom: Mostly isolated people who warm up once you gain their trust
Azuma: His human family died in a tragic accident when he was young. He moved to the east and keeps his wizard identity a secret. He gives company to the lonely people in the east (~1500).
Masumi: An eastern noble. He grew up under his human grandmother. His parents don't quite understand magic. He’s quite gifted and is pretty well-verse with the forest near his home (~late 20s).
Itaru: A toy maker who does a lot of custom work that is almost realistic. He’s also quite good at disguising himself. He’s often thought to be a western wizard at first but he’s a big introvert and would rather be left to his devices to work on his toys and machines (~100-200).
Juza: A south-born wizard known to be really physically strong. He had left the south because of bad rumours and had wandered around until he settled in the east. When he encounters fallen wizards, he takes their mana stones but buries the rest of their remains. He usually works as a mercenary for hire (~late 30s).
Kumon: A south-born wizard who takes a lot of pride in his brother and followed him to the east once his brother made base. He has a lot of personal conflict with his magic and using it properly (~mid-20s).
Southern Country: Kind-hearted wizards who are often weaker magically
Omi: A north-born wizard who was quite notorious in his youth. After his partner-in-crime died during a raid by other wizards, he moved down to the south and became a school teacher (~80-90s).
Muku: Born with weaker magical power and no teacher to learn from, Muku mostly focused on becoming dependable physically (~early 20s).
Tsuzuru: A young writer who once wished to sell his works, especially to the central and western kingdoms, but didn’t want to leave his large family. Now that all of his siblings are adults and his parents are in retirement, he’s had thoughts of leaving and making his stories come to life (~50s).
Tsumugi: A dancer who once upon a time was going to go to Central Kingdom to make it big but backed out last minute and stayed in his village. He is very talented though and uses magic to enhance the experience of his performances. He also often uses plants as a moving visual (~100-200).
Central Kingdom: Filled with natural-born leaders and those who have strong senses of justice
Sakuya: Orphaned at an early age, he grew up doing odd jobs just to survive. His dream is to become a knight for the kingdom, much like Cain Knightley (albeit he was thrown out of the knights) (~early 30s).
Citron: A noble and the tentative heir of the Zahra household. His father is an acclaimed wizard but out of all his children, Citron has been the only wizard. It wasn’t until recently that his younger half-brother Tangerine had been born a wizard as well that he decided that he wishes to leave the family (~200+).
Sakyo: A north-born wizard who had dreamed for the longest time to stay in central and rid himself of the pressure of north for years. He had been involved in Azami’s family in order to survive since he had originally been very weak. Azami’s dad is a wizard he respects deeply who had fathered many but Azami had been the first wizard and Sakyo had taken care of him since birth. When Sakyo was given permission to leave the family, he had taken it, but not without Azami’s resentment (~1000).
Tenma: The son of a merchant that made it big. He’s a performer in all aspects from singing to acting to dancing and is regarded as a superstar by the locals. His magic is used to enhance his theatrics (~late 20s).
Guy: While his parents were originally from the central kingdom, he was taken at a young age and grew up being trained in the North. He worked as a mercenary afterwards, traveling the world before he meets Citron’s family and is then assigned to become his aide (~1500).
Tasuku: A south-born dancer who has gained the attention of many people. He was originally going to come to the Central Kingdom with his Tsumugi, but he had backed out and Tasuku still resents him for running away (~100-200).
Thoughts???? I’d love to hear them!
Mod (finally) reviews all 67 winners of the Eurovision Song Contest Part VII (FINALE)- The 2010s
And we’re on the home stretch! Just 10 songs left now.
The 2010s stands as the only decade I watched live and the only decade I haven’t yet rewatched, mainly because I have no interest to. I’ve already seen the contest anyway, if a song didn’t stick with me then, it probably won’t now.
Also prepare for some hotter than usual takes, mostly down to the 10s contests being the most well known due to recency bias. I can say whatever the Hell I want about older contests and what songs I despise from there, but one non-positive comment about Euphoria and suddenly about five butthurt anons appear in my inbox telling me why I’m wrong.
But without further ado, let’s finish these off!
2010: Satellite
Country: Germany
Artist: Lena Meyer-Landrut
Language: English
Thoughts: I used to defend this song a lot, for some reason. I used to get super defensive when people dismissed it as a cheap lazy pop song that shouldn’t have won over (insert song here, but let’s be real here, 99% of the time it’s Turkey's equally cheap lazy emo rock song) and that it robbed so many better entries, blah blah, you know the drill. And I think it’s because it was the first winner I saw as I started properly watching in 2010, so I didn’t want to shit all over the winner that introduced me to the contest. Or maybe it’s that it makes me really nostalgic, or something to that effect. But, dear God, why did I? It’s so… not worth it. I appreciate it for being a much less instrumental-heavy winner, with its skippy, snappy beat and bouncing vocals which sound closer to plain talking than actual singing, but… How many times were the lyrics ran through GoogleTranslate before they were finalised? What’s with the janky, overexaggerated fake-English accent? Why does the singer look embarrassed to be a part of this? Why was this written?  And how the FUCK did it win? It’s so weird and awkward to listen to. It’s the song equivalent of trying to make small talk with that one classmate you never talk to because they’re shy and boring. It’s like listening to an old person laugh half-heartedly at their not-that-funny old person joke. It’s canned laughter in a mediocre sitcom. It’s just an awkward, painful to listen to song that’s made all the more painful by the fact that Germany has sent much better songs that easily could have replaced this as their one post-reunification winner.
Was this my personal winner for this year? No
If no, what was? Spain- Daniel Diges- “Algo Pequeñito”
Personal ranking (out of 67): 60th
2011: Running Scared
Country: Azerbaijan
Artist: Ell and Niki
Language: English
Thoughts: Look, this one isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Doesn’t mean it’s good, or that I find it particularly good, but the worst winner of all time? Goodness no, it doesn't even come remotely close. What we have here is a mildly pleasant ballad duet song with a distinctive sad-boyband vibe. Like you can definitely hear the “X-Factor winner’s first cover song” energy just radiating off it from the first few lines. I suppose you could argue that that does make it feel a bit clinical and like it’s trying too hard to be a big hit, but come on, it’s not like this is the first winner like that. The singing is alright; better than half the singing that won in the 2000s anyway, and the male singer especially has a nice voice. The lyrics aren’t exactly poetry, sure, but again, other winners have terrible lyrics as well and don’t receive nearly as much hate as this one does. And… that’s it. Why all the hate? No idea, but I can only assume the people who declare this song to be the worst winner ever haven’t heard anything that won before 2010.
Was this my personal winner for this year? No
If no, what was? Denmark- A Friend in London- “New Tomorrow”
Personal ranking (out of 67): 42nd
2012: Euphoria
Country: Sweden
Artist: Loreen
Language: English
Thoughts: Ugh. Listen. This is not a bad song. It’s decent, middle of the table, listenable, marketable, well sung, well performed, well shot. I must stress, this is not a bad song. But the best Eurovision song of all time? Absolutely not. Euphoria is one of the few winners I would describe as “overrated”, and that isn’t a term I use lightly (since it’s overused as Hell), because frankly, I don’t see what people see in this song. Hell, I forgot it completely until the 2012 voting, and further still until mid 2013 when a friend said he liked it. This song left that little of an impression on me that I completely forgot everything about it for a solid year.  And considering how many fans regard this to be one of the best, if not the best song to ever come out of the contest... that baffles me, I just can’t wrap my head around why so many people hold this song up on a pedestal and worship it like it was dropped from the hands of God himself. And I'm not sure if it's because this just isn't a genre I care about, or if it's because this was WAY back when I was a casual fan who didn't follow any of the songs or artists so didn't know who'd be the favourite going in like I do now, and therefore didn’t know to keep an ear out for this one. Or maybe you have to be piss drunk and at a nightclub to really feel the impact of this song. This song triggers absolutely no response from me other than “Oh, a Eurovision song”. I feel no emotion towards it aside from complete indifference. I can’t deny that this song made an impact, it just… didn’t make an impact on me.
Is this my personal winner for this year? No
If no, what is? Spain- Pastora Soler- “Quedate Conmigo”
Personal ranking (out of 67): 40th
2013: Only Teardrops
Country: Denmark
Artist: Emmelie de Forest
Language: English
Thoughts: Let me ask you a question: What do you get when you sandwich an otherwise decent pop song between two of the most iconic and recognizable winners of the decade? You get this. Only Teardrops is a weird, weird winner to me. On one hand, the fandom acts like it might as well not exist, you go straight from Euphoria to Rise Like a Phoenix, who cares about that filler song which came between them. On the other hand, I know a lot of people who really like it, yet all of them are either very casual fans or not fans at all. So this makes me feel like this song’s main weakness is that it’s too mainstream, at least for Eurovision fans. What are my thoughts? It depends. For one, I enjoy this song a LOT more than Euphoria; I always have done and I’m not ashamed or afraid to admit that. I find this song has a lot more personal appeal, particularly a much bigger finale in my opinion, and being surrounded by people who like this song has admittedly kept me fond of it. BUT, I still wouldn’t necessarily call it a favourite of mine. Maybe a favourite of the 2010s, but not overall. At the end of the day, it’s a little too generic, a little too normal, a little too like every other song you’d hear on the radio. It’s not really a song I find myself coming back to again and again and loving every time, it’s the song I stick on to shut my family up when they want to listen to Eurovision music and I’m too shy to show them the songs I actually really like. It's just a decent song that's unfortunate enough to be stuck in between two more iconic winners, doomed to be little more than the answer in a pub quiz question.  And even though I do prefer this one to some of those icons, and don’t really have anything else to say about it, it’s just enjoyable yet kind of bland.
Is this my personal winner for this year? This or Iceland
If no, what is? Iceland- Eyþór Gunnlaugsson- “Ég á Líf”
2014: Rise Like a Phoenix
Country: Austria
Artist: Conchita Wurst
Language: English
Thoughts: Ah yes, the man who made the entire continent of Europe collectively forget what a drag queen is. What a shitshow that night was. But I'm not here to talk about that, I'm here to rate/say some things about the song, and honestly? This is arguably the most vocally impressive winner from the 2010s. Seriously, there’s nothing I can fault here; this guy’s got some serious pipes. Every time I go back to it I just end up blown away by how powerful and raw this song is. And obviously good vocals alone can’t carry a song forever, otherwise I would’ve had nicer things to say about the early 70s and mid 90s, but with this song the vocals go hand-in-hand with the gimmick. Without the powerful vocals this would just be a knockoff Bond theme sung by a drag queen with a beard, like it’d just be another sensationalist gimmick song to throw onto the pile with all the other gimmick songs. But with the good singing, this has the distinction that it’s a gimmick entry that still had every right to win because the singer was actually competent. Also unlike the 70s winners this one actually has strong emotions tied to it rather than it just being a bunch of pretty French words, so there’s that.
Is this my personal winner for this year? This or the Netherlands tbh
2015: Heroes
Country: Sweden
Artist: Måns Zelmerlöw
Language: English
Thoughts: Fun fact: I was so bitter this won that I stormed off before the voting was done and cried in my room over it. I hated everything about this song: I hated how Sweden won just three years after their last win, I hated how the staging was just BEGGING people to vote for it, and I ESPECIALLY hated how it beat out the televote favourite because the juries were too busy wanking off to this one to care about anything else. I just despised everything about this song, and it turned me into an obnoxious jury-hater for a solid year.  And yes, I'm extremely embarrassed of all that because honestly this song is fantastic. I would go as far to say it's my favourite Swedish winner, maybe not one of my favourite Swedish entries but definitely my favourite winner of theirs. Everything about this is just so appealing to me, from the brooding intro and vocals, to the lyrics, to the staging, my GOD the staging! It’s one of the best performances of the contest to date; It's impressive without being tacky or try-hard, he interacts with his background, and that little doodle boy character he’s created is adorable. I just love this performance, it’s so mesmerising.
Was this my personal winner for this year? Not then, is now
If no, what was? Then? Serbia- Bojana Stamenov- “Beauty Never Lies”
Personal ranking (out of 67): 11th
2016: 1944
Country: Ukraine
Artist: Jamala
Language: English, some Crimean words
Thoughts: I mean… it’s good until she starts singing. Now I am by all means not an advocate for bringing back the old language rule, but songs like this sure as Hell make me one. This should have been left entirely in Crimean. Simple as that. The English lyrics are bloody awful, no way to sugarcoat it, and absolutely annihilate the potential this song is otherwise seething with, because the instrumental to this song is fantastic and the chorus and climax give me goosebumps. The performance at the contest was chilling as well; a perfect blend of both simple yet flashy staging to set up a really uneasy atmosphere that compliments the song perfectly but, God, the lyrics are bad, man, especially for such a serious song about a personal topic.  That said, it's still the only song in the 2016 top 3 that seemed winner-worthy, unlike Australia's obvious Jurybait and Russia's obvious Telebait. So… it has that.
Was this my personal winner for this year? No
If no, what was? France- Amir Haddad- “J’ai Cherché”
2017: Amar Pelos Dois
Country: Portugal
Artist: Salvador Sobral
Language: Portuguese (Translation: “Both of us”)
Thoughts: I still question why it took Portugal until 20-fucking-17 to even reach the top five, but that's a rant for another day.  Not that this is a rant, far from it. Anybody who knows me knows that I love this song after all, and that it’s one of the few winners I remain rather defensive of, though that’s mostly down to the amount of hate this song and its singer receive.  I will defend Sal and his hot takes on pop music until I die. Now I’ll admit, this song surprised me in more ways than one. Namely by actually winning the televote; given how this song has split opinions clean down the board as to whether it’s spine-tinglingly beautiful or soul-crushingly boring, I was expecting it to come mid-table in the televote whilst some other country swiped first. Yet somehow it managed to stomp the televote just as hard as it stomped the jury vote. I guess I wasn’t the only person this struck a chord with after all. Also, I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a perfect dance song? Like it’s great for ballroom, or contemporary. It’s so dreamy and flowy, and I usually HATE dreamy flowy songs, yet this one just resonates with me for some reason and I’m not sure why.
Is this my personal winner for this year? Yes
If no, what is? N/A
Personal ranking (out of 67): 4th
2018: Toy
Country: Israel
Artist: Netta Barzilai
Language: English, some chicken noises, cringe
Thoughts: And here we have another case for bringing back the language rule, because if this song had a Hebrew version I would 100% listen to it more often. When I heard Israel was sending an, ahem, "feminist anthem" about the #MeToo trend on twitter, my first reaction was "ew". When I heard it was the favourite to win, my reaction was also "ew". And when I heard the song for the first time? "Hm, not as bad as I thought."  And also "ew". This song is just embarrassing. I’m embarrassed listening to it, I’m embarrassed watching it, and I’m embarrassed when someone mentions it when I’m trying to convince them Eurovision actually has good music. You can just tell from the first few lines that it was written by middle aged men trying to shill themselves out to gullible young women who think listening to a song by some Israeli DJ “empowers” them.  And let’s be honest here: “empowering” is just media speak for “shit”. The only thing stopping me from putting it at the VERY bottom is the instrumental and performance because without the cringy lyrics you’re left with a pretty good club song, and I swear to God Netta Barzilai could sell herself sneezing for 3 minutes. If “Toy” had been entirely in Hebrew I would’ve given it a pass, and maybe a cheeky vote or two.  But, alas, that was not to be.
Was this my personal winner for this year? No
If no, what was? Italy- Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro- “Non mi Avete fatto Niente”
Personal ranking (out of 67):  64th
2019: Arcade
Country: The Netherlands
Artist: Duncan Laurence
Language: English
Thoughts: You know, in my 9 or so years watching the contest, I don’t think I’ve ever felt genuinely ecstatic watching a song win. Most of the time I either feel neutral (most of them) or a more general, content kind of happy (2014 and 2017). Like I’ve never let out a shout of joy and slid on my knees across my living room floor in sheer, blind happiness. But that’s what I did with “Arcade”. I’m not really sure why that is because, I must confess, it wasn’t my personal winner of the night, and, looking back, I preferred other songs, but… God, I just can’t explain how overwhelmingly happy I was when this song won. I’m not sure if it’s because I was alone or if I was rooting for this deep down (or if it’s because it was between this song or fuckin’ Sweden again). But that’s by the by. How’s the song? Honestly? Really good. One of my favourites of this decade, if I’m honest. It’s the kind of song that’s grown on me a lot since the night of the contest; even though it wasn’t my favourite song from 2019, I’m not mad at all at it winning.
Is this my personal winner for this year? Honestly I had about 10
If no, what is? I could list them if you want
Nonbinary Awareness Week Day 4: Visibility For The Invisible
What are my identities besides nonbinary?:
Mixed-race Native-- Cherokee and Lenape on my bio-mom’s side, Oglala Lakota on my bio-dad’s side, and Irish, Scottish, Norse, Egyptian, and German.
Neurodivergent-- allistic hyperlexic and dysgeographic
Abuse survivor
Currently 34 (born in ‘86)
Aro/ace
How do my other identities intersect with my nonbinarity?:
In terms of my gender, part of how I understand it is through my racial identity. I can’t really separate it out, especially not when knowing that my Native ancestors had space for people like me and realizing that is part of what helped me feel safer in being open about who I am.
There’s also the fact that my personal style in terms of how I present myself is a careful balance between trying to be read accurately as my gender (difficult as that is) while also trying to be read as ‘not white’ as possible. Yes I’m mixed, yes I’m white-passing, but I don’t like being assumed to be ‘just white’ because it makes me feel like who I am is getting bleached from me so others can find me more ‘palatable’. It makes my skin crawl. (And considering my hell-beast bio-mother pretty much tried all my life to make me as not Native as possible, the idea makes me feel sick.)
A big part of me knowing who and what I am as early as I did (age 4) is thanks to the fact that I’m hyperlexic and that part of how my hyperlexia was expressed back then was through logic and an understanding of ‘If I do x, then y will happen’ (over everything from the possibility of death by getting hit by a car if I stepped into a street too soon, to abstract concepts like the idea that I’d be locked in an asylum and never let out if I told anyone I wasn’t a girl or a boy-- this is the kind of crap I thought about even when I was 4). I was way too damn smart for my own good as a little kid, but it served me well in that I was able to figure out what I was not long after my memories first started up (my 4th birthday, it was like I hadn’t existed before and then someone threw a switch and just-- BOOM-- instant awareness and no memory of anything before and no recognition of where I was, it was weird AF), and knowing what I was that early on gave me the sort of stability I needed to know that if I existed then others had to.
I was going to say that my dysgeographica hasn’t impacted my gender, but thinking about it I can think of one way it did. Since it’s so easy for me to get lost and turned around, I learned early on how to let go and trust that I’d either find my way or that someone I was with would be able to get me to where I was going. In a way, that kind of took some of the stress off of trying to find an answer for what my gender was as a kid.
As for being an abuse survivor... OOF. There are a lot of awful things I lived through (primarily emotional/mental abuse and neglect-- I’ll spare everyone details because it’s heavy as hell) but the worst of it did give me some perspective. Me hiding who I am was miserable as hell, and while being nonbinary can be nerve-wracking in some crowds, being able to look back on my personal hell and the fact that I survived gives me a confidence I don’t think I’d have otherwise. Nothing that life can throw at me will ever be as bad as that. People can be as hostile and ridiculous as they want, but they can never make me be closeted about being nonbinary again.
Yay being 34. (Tbh I used to think-- probably because of the abuse-- I wouldn’t live to see 30. But guess what? I’M STILL ALIVE AND KICKING AND I DON’T PLAN ON GOING ANYWHERE FOR A LONG DAMN TIME. HA-FREAKING-HA.) For most of my life there were no terms for my gender and as a kid I didn’t dare say what I was. To my knowledge (before I found out otherwise later) I was the only nonbinary person I knew and didn’t meet another enby until I was 25. (At least one of the people I was friends with back in high school has turned out to be an enby, but I don’t think they came out until their late 20s.) The ‘90s sucked for having any examples of anyone nonbinary-- both in real life and in fiction. I gravitated toward fiction and clung to whatever characters I found that resonated with me. The one advantage that being so isolated has given me is that it helped me stay in spaces where I felt out of place in circumstances where a lot of other people would have just left, so I was able to get what I needed or do what I needed to.
For a long time-- up until my early-to-mid-20s in fact-- I didn’t realize that my aro/ace-ness and nonbinary-ness weren’t a package deal. (Which is kind of funny in a ‘wtf, where is the logic?’ way because my aro/ace-ness was never an issue for me. I have an uncle on my bio-dad’s side who’s ace and might be aro but idk, so my aro/ace-ness was always brushed off by my family as being ‘genetic’ and therefore not something to be concerned about, but I was absolutely convinced that if anyone knew I was nonbinary then bad things would happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Because I was so isolated for most of my life, I was under the mistaken assumption that they were all kind of tied together. Thank gods for education. So as a result for a long time how I understood my gender also hinged on my orientation (and dear gods, I know using that word makes me sound old af, but it’s less wordy than to get into the whole tangled mess of how sexual and romantic attraction aren’t the same thing and don’t always ‘line up’ for people, yada yada yada). These days I see all three parts as distinct and vaguely interlinked in my case, but no one part of my nonbinary/aro/ace-ness would magically stop existing if one of the other parts changed.
Why do I think my specific experience is less visible than other experiences?:
Let me put it this way: the line-up of being a hyperlexic and dysgeographic aro/ace mixed-race Native abuse-survivor isn’t exactly a common experience. There aren’t many people who have issues of being de-legitimized on the fronts of their gender, their racial identity, their sexuality and romantic orientation, and their neurodivergency all at once. Or having those things pinging off each other used as a way to call into question their mental faculties.
Even as specific as my identity is, because of how liminal my identities are and my past history of abuse I have to remind myself that I can take up space in areas that apply to me. I am so used to being on the edge of accepted existence, even despite the fact that it’s been 14 years since I was taken out of my personal hell, that I have to occasionally remind myself that I’m not taking attention away from those who need to be heard when I’m one of those people.
There are times I haven’t spoken because I’m in an aro/ace space, or a nonbinary space, or an indigenous space, and what I have going on at a given time involves one of the other aspects of my identity. And thing is, if you won’t ever speak up then you won’t ever be heard or seen. That’s something I’m working on, and this entry for Nonbinary Awareness Week is just one step in that.
What’s something about my experience I would like other people to know?:
You don’t always have to have the answers.
It’s okay to sit back and trust that things will happen as they need to happen if something gets to be too much. You’ll figure yourself out more easily if you let yourself just have things come to you as they will.
It hurts sometimes and that sucks, but things can’t improve if you don’t put yourself out there when you’re ready to. The people who matter most will accept you and love you for who you are, not what they think you are.
Multiple seemingly contradictory things can be true about you all at once, and that’s okay.
It’s okay to stand your ground and be honest about who you are.
Even if you feel isolated and closed off, disadvantaged and backed into a corner, educating yourself and doing the work to decolonize your mind and dismantle internalized prejudices will help immensely.
If you think you’re the only one-- in whatever way-- I guarantee you that you’re not. You just have to give yourself time, make the effort to learn, and allow yourself the opportunity to meet others.
rare music rec for zelda nerds
since i completely completed EVERY. POSSIBLE. THING. to do in botw, i’ve been spending my evenings re-downloading the soundtrack to almost every single zelda game i’ve ever played. i used to have these via hard work and waiting 6000 years on ultra-rare limewire torrents on a dial-up connection, and tbh i thought i’d never see them again after i lost 90% of my music library a few years ago, but now most of them, even the rare albums, are on khinsider.
before there was a such thing as mp3 players*, my brother and i had a psp, sony’s attempt at matching the mobile gaming nintendo is so famous for, and it stored data on an SD card. our psp’s SD card, after you took away the space needed to store game data, had enough room for 12 mp3s exactly. i took that thing everywhere - school, the car - 12 seems like a ridiculously low number now, but back then it was INCREDIBLE that i could change the mp3s on it with just a few minutes in front of my computer, instead of having to carefully arrange a playlist and burn a CD (which took forever, and would fail if i accidentally bumped into the computer - i’d have to scrap it and start all over), AND i could listen to music wherever i wanted without having to carry a giant portable CD player, which would skip if i jostled it too much.
anyway, while i was downloading zelda music, i came across this album - an official re-arrangement of some ocarina of time songs. the title theme, the battle theme, lost woods, lon lon ranch (with lyrics!), the shop theme, zelda’s lullaby, the miniboss theme, the temple of time, kotake & koume's theme, hyrule field, the fairy fountain, and the last battle. that’s 12 tracks.
i didn’t even realize what it was until i played the first track - about .5 seconds in i recognized it and it was like getting with with a sledgehammer to my face. our psp had room for exactly 12 songs. this album is 12 tracks long. and out of every possible piece of music in the world i could have chosen to take with me, i picked this album. i listened to it when i was hiding from other kids and teachers in the bathroom. i listened to it while i ate lunch alone outside. i listened to it during art club. i listened to it during long car rides. when i went on vacation with my uncle’s family and wouldn’t have access to a computer or any privacy for an entire week, i hid behind this album. and i forgot it even existed until last night! what an amazing, wonderful find. it’s easy to forget that there WERE times i was happy as a teenager, but i absolutely cherish the nostalgia this brings me.
anyway, if you like zelda, you should also give it a listen. here it is on youtube:
youtube
my favorite tracks are the title, koume & kotake’s theme, and of course the last battle.
*i know mp3 players existed in the mid 00s but they weren’t widely available and i sure as hell couldn’t put my pirated video game music on most of them lol
I sort of ended up trying out some X-Men comics I got my hands on from early 90s or so, sometime late last October or early December. and I liked the stuff so I watched a few of the movies I hadn't seen and read more comics (switched to pirated stuff pretty quick since what I had was a few random Finnish issues and library didn't have a lot of albums). Altho I gotta admit around mid-90s I lost taste for the stuff, so instead I went back and read from 1975 on until I got to what I'd already read
TBH the 90s stuff is just... not that good lol, But anything before or after is banging. Amazingly, Hickman’s new run is some of my favorite X-Men yet--have you read House of X/Powers of X? The rough part about Marvel comics though is that they don’t make it particularly easy to jump in as a new reader. I think DC--and of course all the indies--do that well.
And just like SP, in a weak breeze of stale air, I’m back. Sorry to make you go through your blog to find the old asks. Nope. I’m assuming the castle is described as a bad place because it’s where the bad guys hang out lol. I thought it was interesting that Mev had a big banquet with his followers and Vile killing Aby elicited no reaction from him/Sef. I feel they would’ve felt really secure & that’s how Caisson was able get in undetected. /1
Sorry I should've been clearer, I meant Creed as a replacement not Aby. He was supposedly picked since he’d be easier to manipulate but he shows up in Mid looking like Bliss and now China owes him because he gave funding for the stupid bank. Yeah Aby is like Darq in Landy has no idea what her actual limitations are so which have to accept that she’s ~reeaallyy~ powerful. Eliza definitely isn’t going to make it out alive. Landy barely knew what to do with her after the events of DB. /2
Or the church for that matter. I vaguely remember the theory that magic is stored in the heart (I don't know if you wrote it or someone else) & that's why you can seal true names through it. It would explain how Aby still had power. Don’t mind me but I’ve been coming up with headcanons for Serafina before Bedlam possibly destroys them. The UN’s death was a ~1000 years ago, Mev served under Dagon’s grandfather which means he didn’t rise up until later. /3
I wanna say ‘Old Magic’ families exist & there being an aristocracy (you've written about this & I’m going to take what’s written in DB & run with it) which is how Mev meet Sef. Their marriage really pushed him up the ranks - going to borrow your HC - with him being an orphan he didn’t care much for the upturned noses at him for not being pedigree. Sef showed him how to navigate the world & make it work for him. Mev is more into order while Sef is structure. /4
He would handle the soldiers and intricate parts of battle/strategy & she’d weed out non-believers/traitors and ensure that any weak elements were removed and replaced with something/one more reliable. She could have helped Serpine/Vengeous without them knowing. Letting little bits of information slip, orchestrating from behind the curtains. Killing of the Council of Elders, the Grotesquery, the events at the farm & proof of the FO would 100% benefit the church. /5
I wouldn't be too sad if Sef turns out not to be a big worshipper & she’s just more interested in playing the game. Let me know what you think of these! You’re better at writing than me lol. Not thinking too hard until after I read BL & figure out how much canon I need to ignore. I’ve written about the stuff in the prior asks I’ll send later to separate HC from fist shaking. Be warned, there’s a lot because of how annoyed I am at Landy’s lovely allusions to China being like Hitler *rolls eyes*Wow, it’s been a while. I don’t really remember what I said tbh.The baquet makes sense since it seems like a good way to lift the sprits of his underlings tbh. The killing got no reaction from Sef/Mev bc they knew about it beforehand (and not reaction is one hell of a powermove!).It explains how macaroni boi got in undetected, but not how he didn’t get his throat exploded or set on fire after the first time he stabbed Mev! Uff, I hate the way Mev did sooooo much, I’m so not accepting it as canon.
Creed looking like Bliss? So like, bald?Yeah, I heard about the bank thing. Admittingly, the Dark Cathedral plotline is the only plotline that is even remotely interesting seeing how my favs haven’t made an in-person appearance so far.Yeah, Landy does have a bad habit of telling-and-not-showing.That’s a shame, I like Eliza. And the church is like the only faction I really care about (I’m always a slut for evil murder cults, especially if they are occult lmao).
Nope, that’s not my headcanon, that’s @ffoo-doodle‘s, here’s the link.
Huh? I thought he served under Dagon’s grandfather and THEN became an apprentice of the Unnamed since I don’t see the student of a half-god serving another mage, especially not after killing said half-god???
Good Mev/Sef headcanon with their meeting. But it conflicts with my own headcanon. I headcanon Mev as rising to power on his own using street-smarts and charisma to get mages to join him as he travels and preaches. Serpine follows him around and aids (in any way he can including financial). Mevs own little cult gets violent and the councils that would later become the Sanctuaries try to outlaw the worship of the Faceless Ones which Mevolent uses to unite the different church fractions under his banner to fight for ‘freedom of religion’. All the while he’s presenting himself as the good guy, as their savior and displays the sanctuaries as oppressiors. Later on more mages convert to the Faceless Church, not bc they worship the FO, but bc Mev is using the at the time recent witch hunts as a recruiting tool. And Mev and Sef only meet after he has already risen to power and is a king in his own right.
“Mev is more into order while Sef is structure.“
^^That sounds likely. I agree with that headcanon.
I do disagree with her helping Nef and Baron tho. Nef is too much of a wildcard, nobody can predict what he will do next and the only one that was able to control him was Mevolent. And Baron got played by the Diablerie who in turn got played by Batu and why would Sef slip information to a mortal? I heard that apparently Eliza was suppossed to be working for her the entire time tho.
I just don’t want Sef to be female!Mev or be as badly written as Aby/Darquesse/Murder Rose/ect. aka as over the top crazy for crazyness’-sake.Uff yeah, China’s plotline.... it’s pretty bad. And the WW2 stuff in the books annoys the living hell out of me bc I’m German aka my history lessons in school consisted out of 90% WW2, which ofc also includes reading war literature in my German class. Plus, interviewing WW2 survivors, first the jews, then later we had to stay for a week in an old concentration camp (Oranienburg, that’s near Berlin) the the guards house and interview Germans who lived near the KZ and so on and so on. I really don’t need a fat Irish man who got his WW2 knowledge from Hollywood preaching to me about this kind of stuff.
Btw you mentioned something about an ask with a link? I still haven’t gotten one. Did you not send it or is tumblr being trash again?
