the worst part about writing a book is how many thoughts I have about movies and all that jazz, when I'm three chapters deep and haven't even introduced the third main character yet

thought i'd share info about the lesbian murder mystery/thriller novel draft i'm working on because it's taken over my mind

working title: savior complex

The town of Port Riley, NC is turned inside-out when Leila Weston, the high school's prom queen and unofficial leader of her friend group (colloquially dubbed the Aster Falls Angels), is found dead.

Cleo Beretta, her ex-girlfriend, is the killer. But nobody knows that. Because Cleo has an alibi, and Leila committed suicide.

When Helena Fletcher is approached by her best friend, Cass Weston, who believes that her sister was murdered, Helena reluctantly decides to play detective. Just to ease Cass's nerves.

Helena ends up interviewing Cleo, and unaware of Cleo's real role in the death, working with her to 'solve' the cause of Leila's death. Little do either of them know, Leila had more secrets while she was alive than just what happened in her last moments.

tldr: cleo murders her ex-girlfriend and then ends up pretending to help helena investigate it, all while helena slowly falls for her and they both discover mysteries beyond what they thought they'd find

i wrote my first outline back in october 2023 and finally picked the idea back up recently!! still in the very early drafting stages, but i have the characters very fleshed out

fantasy novel excerpt 🪻

“I’m starting to think there’s a reason this princess doesn’t get out much,” Vivinah muttered to herself.

“I’m not mad,” Ophelia stopped to face the siren, frowning, “I just think out loud. It’s not often anyone is around to hear me, so I apologise, but it’s a bit of a habit.”

“Ah, so you’re a faery princess who’s locked in a tower,” the siren snorted, continuing on past Ophelia as her frown deepened, “It’s starting to make sense.”

“I’m not mad,” she insisted, “And I’m not a princess, either.”

But Vivinah didn’t hear. The wisp buzzed past her face a few times, reminding her of the task at hand.

“Right,” she sighed, taking a deep breath. But she couldn’t help but add, “I don’t sound mad, do I?”

“If you have to ask yourself if you sound crazy,” Vivinah called from ahead, smiling mockingly, “You probably are.”

Ophelia just closed her eyes and sighed again, tranquility interrupted as Vivinah laughed at her.

i’ve never really posted my writing anywhere before but this book i’m writing is quickly becoming something that i might actually be able to publish. idk. maybe i’ll post some more of here, maybe i wont ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lemme know what you think if this makes you think anything at all

so sick of all the ‘how to write’ stuff like the amount of time I’ve spent on videos and blog articles and podcasts about writing the perfect novel when I could’ve spent that time actually writing, or brainstorming, or planning, and ended up with at least a first draft of something even if it’s probably crap and full of basic mistakes and beginner plot holes but guess what?? I am a beginner! And all of the greatest writers had to start somewhere, and I bet they didn’t have endless media entities telling them how it’s done, but they stumbled through, rewriting and revising until their novel was in their hands. And I want to experience that, with all the graft and hard work that goes into the craft of writing, not trying to churn out some stock-draft that might sell okay and require less revision but that isn’t the art of writing, not for me at least.

One of my biggest pet peeves is "support beginner artists!!" Until it's a beginner writer. And then suddenly it's "No I'm not wasting kudos on x fic because the author doesn't write perfectly" please be so fr right now. You used to write poorly when you started too. Sometimes first fic isn't going to have the perfect plot or the best characterization ever but if no one interacts and no one reaches out with kind, constructive criticism, then beginner writers who want to practice and post fics on ao3 are only going to get discouraged
