This is something I wrote elsewhere responding to a claim that it's revisionist to claim punk is leftist because it was originally apolitical. I think there's a lot of interest in punk as an aesthetic and/or ideal on here but often not so much knowledge of its history, so I thought it might be of interest to some here too:

If you're defining punk descriptively rather than prescriptively, it's been all of the above. Johnny Ramone was a Nixon loving Republican, The Clash were nonsectarian socialists, Crass were anarcho-pacifists, The Exploited were anarcho-violenceists, The Stooges were too drugged up to have politics, The Sex Pistols were anti-social provocateurs, the MC5 were 60s militants down with SDS and the Black Panthers, Jello Biafra was basically the world's most cynical social democrat, Darby Crash was a fascist, Danzig was probably a crypto, it goes on and on. Where punk has been political it has leaned left by aggregate, but there were always rightists looking to infiltrate. Before Varg Vikernes made world headlines and cemented the connection between black metal and the far right, before any of the fash-adjacent industrial bands got going, punk rock was kind of the only game in town for rightist youth counterculture. Dead Kennedys wrote Nazi Punks Fuck Off because nazi punks were a real problem! In the 80s and 90s they largely had to be beaten out of the scene by the antifash equivalent of gang violence. Punks chose to prioritize pushing out fascists by any means necessary when going along to get along would have made things much easier (lots of venues stopped booking punk shows entirely because of big fights, and those fights were often about political factionalism). Punk isn't innately anything really, the whole point is it's what you make it. And it took blood sweat and tears to make it as fash unfriendly as it is today. Be the punk you want to see in the world: my final message.

I’m gonna be real with you I don’t think leftism especially western leftism is going to be recovering from this shit for a long time. They’ve been dumping poison in their own wells and saying the Jews (sorry the “Zionists” I mean) are the ones doing it. I know the history of leftist antisemitism within the movement from the ussr and on and even fucking before. But I thought that most leftists were at least willing to unpack their biases but apparently not when Jews are involved.

So many of them are repeating the same old conspiracy theories that were spread even before Nazis existed. Leftists sprinkling those conspiracy theories in different wording doesn’t mean they aren’t the exact fucking same as the ones white supremacist spread. The fact that I have trouble discerning between leftists and right wing douches is in fact alarming.

honestly...I'm SO tired of being stuck between other jews who genuinely think there's nothing wrong with what the israeli government is doing, and pro palestine american leftists who act like absolute ghouls to random jews in the name of their cause & spread literal antisemitism and misinformation constantly. why can't anyone be fucking NORMAL about this or anything else! where is the nuance? why can't we come to an agreement even on the most basic shit, like "hm maybe civilians don't deserve to die for their governments actions?" but no, apparently that makes you a genocidal fascist even if the whole point is being AGAINST genocide no matter what.

my uncle gets kicked out of his synagogue he's been a member of for 3 decades for criticizing the IDF. I get called a nazi by fellow jews for saying we need a ceasefire, then called a nazi by fellow leftists for saying hamas & the houthi are also awful (for palestinians too). the israeli govt says death to all palestinians, they're all terrorists, there's no Innocent civilians even the children. Hamas says death to all jews, they're a scourge on the planet, and leftists clap along, say there's no innocent civilians in israel. the power division is of course hugely skewed in favor of israel, and the death toll is massively disproportionate, so I spend a lot of time talking about that-but seeing other people who believe in this cause being straight up antisemitic is so depressing.

everyone seems to have forgotten that most people are the same. no matter where they're born they just want to live their lives and feel like their loved ones are safe. if you're incapable of having empathy without seeing yourself in their position, try to imagine if people started attacking random americans for the actions of our demented leaders. we /voted/, after all, so that means it's totally fine if someone bombs a city or start stabbing and shooting people who have nothing to do with the conflict! it's fine to rape women and it's fine to blow up babies and alls fair in war and and and.

It's really for me to see just how easily people get radicalized into justifying atrocities. i see how islamic jihad organizations use the bombing of their people to recruit young men into committing acts of terror, and it's easy to see how the israeli government uses the holocaust and the very real spectre of rising antisemitism in the world to make their people think the only way for them to survive is to create a highly militarized state and defend it at all costs, even if that cost is tens of thousands of innocent human lives.

like it's not as if I didn't realize all this before but it's just particularly bleak at the moment. it's insane. it's demented. I hate humanity so much rn in particular the war mongering men who drive every single one of these conflicts (you didn't think I was going to overlook the fact that it's men doing this, did you?) they're so fucking bloodthirsty. every war on earth has involved the mass rape, torture and slaughter of women and girls from the "enemy" population. and then men tell us they're the only ones suffering in war because they're the soldiers, totally ignoring how civilians pay the price of conflicts they didn't even participate in.

all of it is just weighing on me particularly hard today. I hate living in a man's world. all they're good at is destruction. I don't want to keep seeing the planet be torn up for the sake of their greed and I don't want to be forced to suffer the consequences of their lack of humanity. even female separation isn't enough while we have to share our world with them.

CNN aired Trump's town hall meeting in the interest of "hearing both sides" and I want I remind everyone that's how Trump got elected in the first place.

He ran, and everyone thought it was a joke that this billionaire that can't even maintain a successful business is trying to become president, so all the news media outlets aired his speeches with the intent to point and laugh at his blatant bigotry resulting in him getting hundreds of hours of free air time and him being seen as a legit candidate.

And when he won on the platform of giving a voice to the willfully ignorant bigots, everyone acted so suprised that he won "despite" the hundreds of hours or free airtime because the bigots watching didn't get the memo that they were supposed to point and laugh at the guy saying what they've been too afraid to say because of "wokism" (as the conservatives call it).

Like "How could this happen. How could this happen."

And then he didn't win a second term because leftists realized what they were up against and voted literally the first guy that wasn't Trump into office, and the Trump supporters planned an insurrection and you're suprised the first guy that gave a voice to the Klan members that burned crosses in people's yards caused a fucking attempted insurrection.

And now CNN is mad that people are calling them out because they're doing it AGAIN by giving Trump free airtime to be a voice for literally Nazis.

You know what. I'd like to apologize. I'd like to apologize for all the times I said in school "How could the people let Nazis take over Germany."

Because I was too young and naive and optimistic to realize that people play wilfully ignorant like it's a giving Olympic sport just giving gahddamn Klan Members and Nazis gahddamn platforms in the millions.

"Oh I want people to see this to that racism still exists." You're emboldening the fucking bigots that semds death threats to literal children every time a major cinematic company decides to hire a non-white actor because you're airing his speeches in length as if he's got a legitimate opinion that needs to be heard.

I can't even humor the thought that they don't know what they're fucking doing. Because airing speeches in length is what you do for legitimate people whose opinions needs to be heard. That's just not how you handle "What a fucking bigot. Please don't listen to this guy." Airing speeches in length is literally a message "You need to listen to this guy."

If your fucking message is "You need to hear this guy and understand why this is a threat to our democracy" you air clips with lengthy commentary in-between about how this is white supremacy shit, and why our country shouldn't be following people that have these values.

And yes. I used the words "listen" and "hear" intentionally because "listen" is for intaking the words and internalizing it and processing it. "Hear" is for just knowing what words been said but not actually internally processing the words because that's the fucking point. You only hear it not listen. You can hear without listening but you can't listen without hearing.

This isn't a fucking joke. When one side is literally advocating for the genocide of people, you don't "listen to both sides". Because that only emboldens them and gives legitimacy to their claims. You hear that they're being a bigot and tell them to shut the fuck up because you've gotta send a goddamn message to everyone that their claims aren't worth listening to and any attempt to will result in ridicule and scorn.

Fucking hell.

I'm so fucking pissed off that CNN is acting like they don't know what they're doing that I can't fully articulate all of the thoughts running around in my head into one fucking post.

As someone converting to Judaism, the thing I've perhaps most become disillusioned with from fellow Leftists and Progressives, almost immediately? Is the "Punch Nazis" rhetoric.

Ultimately the Nazis they're supposedly willing to punch (predominantly just on principle of being Leftists and Progressives)? Are mostly hypothetical. And they will largely continue to remain hypothetical for the vast majority of them in perpetuity. But even when they do not remain hypothetical, the response is rarely, genuinely, to actually deck a Nazi ... It's most often (rightfully) abject shock and horror at the sudden mask off moment that often reveals them- because they are Wolves who are so very good at hiding among Sheep by point of necessity. Blending in is how they flourish. And when they finally reveal themselves, we are prone (rightfully) to an emotionally complex reaction that rarely, realistically, actually lends itself to any credible infliction of violence against them; "punching Nazis" is not, statistically speaking, emotionally or physically, our real "monkey brain response" to such often sudden betrayal (especially to our sense of moral rightness).

I am thinking, here, most specifically, of a recent occurrence where a group of people marched side by side at a Pro-Pal rally with Neo-Nazi's, completely unbeknownst to them, conversing naturally with them as regular comrades united in a similar goal- until suddenly a display of blatant Jewish solidarity elsewhere in eyeshot presented an opportunity for a moment to unmask. But the response to the unmasking was not to actually "Punch the Nazis" ... But rather the more realistic (and reasonable) emotional response of shock, betrayal, and horror; only words were eventually exchanged between the two groups. No fists were ever thrown in the end, though I'm sure they'd all boasted the rallying cry at least once (as many Leftists and Progressives have at one point or another- including myself).

And this isn't in any way to shame them for not "doing the right thing and punching the fucking Nazi like they said they would". But rather to illustrate my point: I have heard a million stories like this; statistically speaking, the reality of actually punching Nazis is far less likely than simply being caught up in a far more reasonable emotional reaction of shock, surprise, and horror. And in those moments? The best most people can do, realistically speaking, is words- not active violence. And that's if their terror response isn't Flight, Faun, or something else other than Fight in the first place (as most people frankly is).

"Punch Nazis" being the primary response to rising Antisemitism, Nationalism, and Supremacy (etc) is thus, ultimately, a kind of performative Leftism / Progressivism in much a similar way that "arming more people" is performative for those on the Right in relation to rising Gun Violence ... Because everyone wants to believe that they could be the hero in the end; everyone wants to believe they could save the day ... But at the end of it? When it comes down to the bottom of it? It really is nothing more than Tarzan chest beating and a weird, almost fetishistic form of heroic fantasizing.

What are you actually doing, however? What you building, in order to actually protect and safeguard the rights and Humanity of the people who would be the Nazi's targets in the first place? Those who are Disabled. The Queer. Those who are Mixed Race. The Jews. The various "others" and "deviants" and "impure" of society that they actively seek to eradicate- because this is not mere rhetoric that they spew, and it cannot be countered with words. It requires tangible and sustainable action ... So what are you doing that actually matters? That protects? That saves?

Because saying "punching Nazis" is fucking great and all ... But at the end of the day? I'd ultimately rather know that I have people willing to actually do the things needed to legitimately protect me (hiding me, feeding me, smuggling me to safety, clothing me, and so on and so forth) whenever they inevitably come hunting for me for being a Queer Disabled Jew. And you're not really convincing me of that by performatively saying "Punch Nazis" every opportunity you get to do so. Especially not given the results of the most recent events- and doubly especially not when the statistical likelihood of Nazis getting punched is far lower than peoples' fetishistic heroic fantasizing makes them believe they're capable of.

Aztecs, yikes people raised hell here in CA about some of the lessons that involved learning various Aztec prayers, not sure how far if actually got but I hope it didn't get implemented.

When Ilhan Omar was told by Batya Ungar-Sargon, "Congratulations, Ilhan. You just won the approval of the KKK," the whole progressive left was seemingly in agreement that this was fucked up, because obviously the KKK wants to kill her.

Why, then, are so many leftists so eager - so gleeful - to make comparisons between Jews and Nazis at every chance they can get, even where Nazis hadn't even come up? Usually they won't even say anything so measured as "Congratulations, you just won the approval of Nazis" in a specific instance, but rather, they will just say, "You are a Nazi."

It would be one thing if there were a Jew or group of Jews alive on this planet who had done anything approximating what the Nazis did, but this is obviously not literally the case. The Nazis killed some 2/3 of European Jews in four years. There is not a single Jew alive or dead who has done anything approximating that. Nor is there any group of Jews alive or dead who has done anything like that.

Find a better way to say that an individual Jewish person, group, or government sucks. It's a form of Holocaust revisionism to say that they are the same as, or worse than, Nazis. It may not be in some hypothetical universe where there were such Jews, but it is the case in this universe at this time.

Do people do this without thinking? Yes. They should stop. I used to do it, and I have stopped.

honestly my blog is like a pinterest folder for me of the wide spectrum of radfem views that people have around these parts. not everyone is a jerk, which was fuckin wild to my detrans brain after so long in trans spaces being told they're all right-wing tradwives... what peaked my interest and led me to make this blog was me finding trans-led radfem blogs that were fighting for cis/bio women's rights and trying to find cis-trans compromises, talking abt being trans radfems or radfem allies while being trans. ofc you could say they're all fake, but i've even met irl trans ppl very open to certain radfem beliefs when i presented them out of curiosity without saying they were radfem ones. cuz let's be real, most ppl don't really know what radfems actually believe in, and know thy enemy is a pretty important thing in activism! ppl study all kinds of groups where bigotry has festered, and i don't believe radfems are like incels or nazis at all

it's late, so i'm going to ramble about what i've learned -- radfems, the ones that aren't just jerks, are basically saying: "i care first and foremost about afab rights! i want afab-only spaces in bathrooms & changing rooms, alongside gender neutral ones! i care about afab-specific issues like abortions and forced pregnancy and afab genital mutilation and trauma that only cis women & transmasc ppl face growing up, afab ppl face unique misogyny that is wayyy too often seen as a less important issue than transmisogyny instead of an equal struggle, and transfems can be misogynistic af against afab folks in a unique way that needs to be called THE FUCK OUT!! afab rights matter! afab people are more than just their body type! afab people have unique sex-based oppression!" they aren't calling for trans ppl's deaths, the grand majority anyway. they're all for gender nonconformity, they just don't believe it will ever your agab and they believe your agab matters in certain leftist discussions... like how transfems will say theyfabs and use the word afab to describe a specific dynamic between the two sexes, afab/female & amab/male

and i know "there are two sexes in humans" gets ppl mad -- from what i read about there being two sexes, radfems told me the one thing no one has been able to debunk so far is that if you google male & female it says that the male/amab sex is the group of humans that has small spermazoid gametes, and female/afab sex produce larger gametes; intersex people still fit under one of these two, and the term itself is actually seen as offensive, they're just people with DSDs. afab ppl typically are born with vaginas and go through estrogen puberty, and amab ppl are typically born with penises. radfems are saying that amab/male and afab/female are just body types that shouldn't dictate one's life, but the patriarchy and creepy powerful cis men have turned afab bodies (and afab-passing bodies) into something sexualized and objectified, and people with afab bodies are raised under misogyny from birth, which amab people typically don't go through unless they start passing 100% perfectly (and even then the misogyny they face is conditional; if someone learns they're amab, they will face homophobic disgust, like the typical movie joke of a guy realizing a girl is transfem and throwing up... that isn't the misogyny that cis women & transmasc ppl face). penises can forcibly impregnate and feel genital pleasure while penetrating, which does mean afab people & post-op transfems (the grand majority of transfems statistically still have dicks) are uniquely vulnerable against amab bodies. these are big differences that need to be talked about

radfems are saying that amab/male & afab/female socialization matters and the trans community should take it into account, and stop seeing cis women & transmascs as the one-way oppressors of transfems, when transfems are also privileged for being amab; they do not face systemic body issues that afab ppl face, and they do not know what it's like to grow up as afab, therefore sometime need to sit tf down and listen too. it's not a strict oppressor/oppressed dynamic, it's more complex. afab-unique oppression is violent and widespread worldwide, afab ppl have generational trauma and may face afab-unique issues that anyone amab cannot even begin to understand. i think everyone should listen to one another. i think transmisogyny & afabmisogyny both matter. that's what radfems are saying.

radfems often do not use the most respectful language. they say male instead of amab, female instead of afab, they misgender, they say trans-identified male (tim) and trans-identified female (tif). many have faced afabmisogyny from transfems and have nowhere to go. some are transmascs, and some are transfems and strong allies. radfems often do not mince their words. but i think, as an oppressed class, their words still do matter. if identifying as a woman makes you oppressed, and being afab makes you oppressed, wouldn't being a woman-identified afab person bring a unique oppression? don't cis, or as they call themselves biological women, matter? they don't feel a gender identity, they see their agab as just a body type, one they did not choose and may not always like, but they align with it and they want to normalize it and stop oppression against it. if cis people tell trans people they don't have a gender identity, they don't have ~womanly feelings~ inside their heads, does anyone ever listen or do they just go umm you're probably agender? if cis women say they have worries about certain gender-affirming things, bc it may bring harm their way, do we talk abt it or just mock them and call them terfy bitches? what about all the replies from trans people involving r*pe threats and forced impregnation and guilt-tripping same-sex attracted ppl for not being into the opposite agab, when some trans people also are only attracted to the same agab (transfem4transfem) or attracted only to the opposite agab. some openly admit it! yet cis people can't do the same? what about certain concerns related to medical transition, ones that many detrans people raise but no one except right-wing bigots listen to? and the ironic gender normative sexist things that some trans ppl say? why aren't there discussions abt this shit in trans spaces?? it genuinely worries me

there's soooo many of these issues, you see... and trans folks and trans allies aren't speaking up, they aren't posting about them, they aren't having actual discussions, they just brush it all under the rug as terf bs bc it makes them look bad so they want to believe all this shit is fake. that's why radfems are getting more and more fed up. i want to ease that tension. i want to do something. bc i care a whole fucking lot about all lgbtq people. trans people literally funded my escape from my abusive home when i was younger, i know y'all protect your own. i just want to throw away the misconception that cis women aren't a unique oppressed class too, and actually listen to what they're saying so we can put an end to the bullshit cis-trans war, bc the people killing trans people ARE ACTUALLY CIS MEN! the people in power ARE CIS MEN! we are wasting our fucking breath on eachother. and it needs to change. that's what my book is gonna be about and that's why i'm on here collecting receipts and having deep convos with radfems and eventually doing surveys etc

i genuinely did not know what i'd find when i started researching radfeminism. i expected something radically (ha!) different. i think the trans community could really benefit from at least learning more, if only to have genuine debates and not just slurs and threats. i really do care and i hope both communities can somehow find peace :/

I’m brazilian and I’m so fucking pissed at my president, I’m left wing but holy shit he’s saying some dumb shit about Israel and it’s disgusting, not mention making out situation in international politics while also sinking the left with him. But beyond that, his remarks about Israel genociding gazans like the nazis did to the jews is so fucking disgusting and seeing how dumb and shameless he’s about this is infuriating, and what’s worse the left in on his side and celebrating him! I really wish people on the Left would stop feeling the need to compare the current situation in Gaza (and in Palestine more broadly - though a lot of people are so misinformed they don't even know the difference between Gaza and the West Bank) to other past or current global tragedies.

It is minimalizing, inappropriate and frankly deeply disgusting to try to turn Gaza into some type of competition and pit it against other tragedies or other parts of the world that are suffering now. Furthermore, something can be bad and not be just like some other historic event that was different or bad in its own way.

I wish people would put this energy into actually trying to find a workable peaceful compromise solution that would allow for coexistence instead of just pointlessly shouting inflammatory things which does not help people in Israel or Gaza or the West Bank in any way whatsoever. I guess a lot of Leftists want to center themselves rather than the actual people impacted by this conflict.

ok there’s like nothing on my blog that would indicate that i’m a nazi. so i’m going to assume you’re a zionist (if you aren’t i apologize for the next part). the thing about the palestinian genocide is that people refuse to admit it is one. they’ve bombed hospitals for no reason, killed thousands, including children, and justified it by screaming “hamas”, “antisemitism” and “october seventh”.

first off, october seventh was not even three days where they attacked IOF buildings. most of the people killed were in the IOF. the Center for Strategic and International Studies places the death toll of oct 7 at around 1200. the death toll in gaza alone is 20000+. i will not defend the fact that civilians were killed and kidnapped on oct 7, but i will give some historical context.

starting in the 1930s, there have been tensions between the arabs and the jews in palestine. this only really occurred when more jews from europe (and more importantly, zionist jews) started immigrating en mass to palestine, seeking to establish a jewish state on the pre-existing palestinian land. this escalated into a full-on war in 1948 when the British left. (btw, this isn’t from some leftist or muslim organization, this is from the un website). israel had been newly established and their armed forces attacked palestinian villages (villages, not armed forces, not military bases, villages, with villagers, untrained men women and children).

now some more modern history. i’ll keep this part brief. fatah was started in 1959 and controlled gaza from 1967 to 2007. (peacefully, i might add). then, hamas won the election in 2006, securing power in gaza in 2007. now why is it that israel keeps saying that this has always been about hamas when the conflict had been ongoing for nearly 60 years before hamas came onto the scene? because it was never about hamas. this war has always been about the destruction of the palestinian people and their memory in the collective conscience. why else would they also be bombing the west bank, where fatah remains in power and hamas does not even exist?

second point. antisemitism. jews are semites. arabs are semites. killing or hatred of either one is antisemitic. personally, i am not antisemitic, not even anti jew. what i have a problem with is not the ethnic or religious group of the jewish people, nor is my problem with arabs or muslims. my problems lie with hamas and likud. simple as that (also the state of israel as it currently exists)

My friend trying to compare Lovecraft's #problematic behaviour to Tolkien's #problematic behaviour saying that "both were a product of their time" feels extremely childish, and wrong in so many levels.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's bad to like and admire the works of either of these authors. I have always wanted to read Lovecraft because I am into that shit but I haven't done it because life. You don't have to justify liking the work of a racist asshole because it was a "product of his time." The man is dead. He can't lobby racist policies from the grave.

And I don't think they see the value in approaching literary analysis from a critical point of view, instead of "I like this therefore it is Good and Perfect" and that's why they try to defend, or justify, or just remark that the authors don't have blame.

I'd be the first time to admit that Tolkien, as a person and as a writer, has flaws and biases. But there *is* a difference between a guy that is trying his best to convey a message of empathy and connection, like Tolkien or Mark Twain, even within the bounds of their own prejudice, and a guy as overtly ideologically poisonous as Lovecraft.

And I told her, "you know, as a disabled transgender person, I find incredibly interesting some of the work of German philosopher Heidegger, the NOTABLE NAZI, which doesn't negate the fact that he was a NOTABLE NAZI." Which is in my opinion something way more controversial than saying "I think Lovecraft's monsters are cool".

All authors are a product of their time and environment. That's like, something I thought was taken for granted? Not to get leftist about things but the individual is a social construction. I don't see the point of remarking that "authors are a product of their time" cuz DUH WE KNOW. WE ARE ALL YOU SHITHEAD. 300 years in the future they are going to see us as problematic and you have to make peace with that, and try your best to make the world better anyway. Cuz there is a difference between someone trying their best, and someone who actively advocates for genocide. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't examine the bigotry present in the works of authors who were trying their best, of course. At least my corner of the Tolkien fandom is notable for slandering the man and his work work every chance they get and we still love him. This is normal and healthy behaviour.

But the thing that really confuses me is her defense of J.K. Rowling. I really do mean this: This is a transgender girl defending her. Because she thinks that the only thing JK did was "tweeting some unfortunate things" as though those tweets existed in a vacuum and not currently fueling anti-trans bigotry around the world and possibly indirectly sparked the Scottish independence. Especially because she is a living author, her bigotry is NOT EXCUSABLE. You don't even have to stop liking Harry Potter, but at least acknowledge that this woman is incredibly fucked up?

I really hope she grows out of it eventually. Like, she is at the same crossroads I was a few years ago, of realising you are transgender and having to drop all the bullshit bigotry the YouTube algorithm has been feeding you since you were twelve, and gaining the mental maturity to engage with media critically. But damn god if I have to listen to her say "product of their time" one more time I am going to lose it.
