It was dark when you finally woke up. You lay in the quiet for a few minutes then hauled yourself off the bed and grabbed new materials for Billy's wounds. You found him laid out on his back on the couch with one nodding off in the chair. You turned on the lamp by billys head and saw the other man jerk awake as you did. You assumed he hadn't intended to fall asleep or let his guard down but you paid him no mind and continued. You knelt by billys abdomen and gently lifted his shirt above the bandaged area and carefully started removing those as well. You ignored his stare as you inspected the wounded area. You went in with some disinfectant just to be safe, which caused him to hiss, then you secured the new gauze and threw out the old. you then took a disinfectant wipe from your first aid kit to the remaining open wounds on his head. Some were healing well and some were bad enough that it was going to take more than just a few days to see progress. As you tenderly blotted then you were grateful neither of the two men had said anything and you hoped they wouldn't. You finished with the last one on his face and you noticed another near his collar bone which you gave the same treatment. As you pulled away his hand caught yours and he brought it to his lips and gave a quick kiss, you assumed in thanks. You turned, tossed the wipe in the trash and returned to your room, all the while you could feel his big beautiful puppy dog eyes on you. 

    You lay on your bed, back facing the door. You stared at the wall in the dark, zoned out and numb. You heard the door open and close softly behind you. You didn't move, you knew which one it was   Billy lay beside you. You both stayed silent for a long while the he said quietly “im sorry. I’m-” his voice cracked “so fucking sorry, love” 

   You didn't respond, you just lay there willing yourself not to cry, as you knew billy was too. After you you don't even know how long, you rolled over and lay your head on his chest as you’d done so many times so very long ago and murmured “we will have to talk about it eventually you know.”

   “I know” 

You both remained awake and in that position for hours, silence filling the room. Eventually your mind wandered to the man in the other room. You were surprised he was keeping his mouth shut and minding his own business, you were also surprised he was still here and it begged the question, why? Why was One still here and why had he told you so much? 

   You sat up “BIlly?”

   He hummed in response 

   “Why is he still here? And why did he tell me all that?”

   “not  entirely sure. His behavior is odd, even for him. I expected him to come for me and find me, I didn't expect the rest.”

   “is he gonna kill me? Is that why he…” you trailed off

   “No. I don't think thats his intention and I would never let that happen”

   “then why?”

   “Not sure, love. I’m as confused as you are.” he reached up and gently starts rubbing small circles on your back. It was soft and reassuring. He’s here and you're safe, but you cant help but doubt how long it would last. He left before he might again, but something deep down told you he’d never leave your side. That this was somehow different than before and he’d never do it again. You weren't sure if this feeling came from your soul, heart, head, gut, intuition, context clues or if you were just deeply delusional but here you were believing the man who’d lied, left and faked his own death when he said “whatever happens, I’ve got you”

BEN HARDY (1921-1994)

Custom motorcycle builder Ben Hardy was born Benjamin F. Hardy on July 25, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. However, historical data regarding his family, upbringing, and obituary have yet to be recovered from the annals of time.

After World War II, as the United States experienced a slight depression with high unemployment, and California had an unemployment rate of 8.8% compared to a national average of 3.9% in 1946, Hardy established Hardy’s Motorcycle Service shop in South Central Los Angeles, located at 1168 E. Florence Avenue. He built two ‘Billy’ bikes and three’ Captain Americas,’ made at that time from a 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson Panhead, with the assistance of another Black motorcycle builder, Cliff Vaughn, the most famous motorcycles ever made.

Los Angeles, California, was a city divided and segregated along racial lines, and it did not welcome Hardy and his creation into the mainstream motorcycle world. However, Hardy and Black motorcyclists continued riding the typical ‘Billy’ bike in their limited circle. In the 1950s, during the high point of Jim Crow, some viewed the camaraderie of riding a customized Harley chopper creatively in a group as a revolutionary act.

In 1969, Hardy’s chopper was showcased in the iconic 1969 motorcycle film Easy Rider, in which two bikers travel through the Southwest and South of the U.S. with lots of money from a cocaine deal. His bikes were duplicated for this movie if mechanical failure or wreckage during film shortage were anticipated. The film Easy Rider brought in more than $60 million; however, Hardy was inadequately recognized and did not benefit financially from the movie’s success.

In 2014, 20 years after the death of Hardy, the Captain America bike sold for $1.35 million. Four years later, in 2018, Hardy’s work was featured in the “Black Chrome” at the California African American Museum. This exhibit, sponsored by the Automobile Club of Southern California, the most prominent member of the AAA Federation of Motor Clubs, was about the historical development of African American motorcycle culture. A replica of Hardy’s Captain America bike is housed in one of Germany’s largest motorcycle collections at the German Two-Wheeler and NSU Museum in northern Baden-Württemberg.

Ben Hardy died in 1994. He was 74.

Benjamin F. Hardy (July 25, 1921-1994) was an African-American custom motorcycle builder who made the Captain America and Billy choppers for the 1969 Peter Fonda road movie Easy Rider.

The Captain America bike, made from a then 20-year-old, heavily customized Harley-Davidson panhead is considered one of the most iconic motorcycles ever built.

Working with another African motorcycle builder, coordinator Cliff Vaughs, Hardy built two 'Billy' bikes and three 'Captain Americas', one of which was destroyed in the making of the movie, the rest of which were stolen. Each bike had a backup to make sure that shooting could continue in case one of the old machines failed or got wrecked accidentally. The 'Billy' bike was typical of the custom motorcycles Black bikers were riding at the time.

Hardy and Vaughs remained largely unknown and uncredited for 25 years as they were not accepted due to being African-Americans, and were not welcomed into the mainstream motorcycle world in the USA.

Known locally as "Benny" and "King of Bikes" Ben Hardy's Motorcycle Service was located at 1168 E. Florence in Los Angeles. He was a mentor to many of the local motorcyclists in South Central, Los Angeles.

His work was featured in the “Black Chrome” exhibition at the California African American Museum

I have FINALLY (which I am very sorry for guys) finished going through my submissions and have created something that looks like a bracket. BUT, in order to include the most characters, I have devised a group round with 128 characters divided into 8 groups and have sorted them in a way that prevents this competition from becoming a batman vs spider-man final.

summary: Billy busts his stitches as you find an intruder in your home

  “Hi!” the man said with a wave and a quick smile.

   “Who the fuck are you?” 

   “I’m One” 

   “Okay…One… get out” 

   “ can’t Sorry” 

   “You Can't?” your voice was getting louder “why not? Why are you here?” your tone was steady and determined, not at all mimicking the panic you were feeling on the inside “GET. OUT.”

   “Look, I just need to speak to the boy” 

   “Why” 

   The man paused, watching you for a moment, calculating a response  “He broke a promise” 

   “Join the club” 

   The corners of his mouth twitched upwards at your quick rebuttal he composed himself and leaned forward so his elbow rested on his knees “look, normally i wouldn't let anyone sit in on the discussion we’re gonna have but ill make an exception for you. This is going against my better judgment and breaks so many rules but you may stay.” 

   “I MAY STAY?!” you nearly bellowed 

   One winced, deeply regretting his phrasing but responded by shifting his eyeline behind you and letting out a loud “FOUR!” 

 You heard a thump and your bedroom door swinging open and Billy appeared panicked, if your voice hadn't woken him, Ones sure as hell did. 

  “So nice of you to join us” one said with a petty smile as he leaned back again and pulled a gun from inside his jacket which he rested calmly on the cushion beside him. 

  “Shit” 

   “Yeah, shit is right my friend. Did you think i wouldn't find you? Did you really think id just let you go?”

   “Billy w-what's going on?” your eyes shifted from one to billy. Billys face was sad, panicky and apologetic as he met your gaze. 

   “Wait- you haven't even told them yet?” one was shocked then after a moment he started laughing. You looked back at the strange man who collected himself enough to say “well… are ya gonna? Cuz nows your chance big guy.” 

   Your gaze flipped back to your former… whatever he was to you “what's he talking about?” you paused hoping he’d respond, his mouth dropped open but he uttered no words, his eyes big and regretful. You turned your body and faced him fully “Billy?” you grabbed one of his hands as you attempted to get him to finally tell you the truth but you stopped as you felt how clammy his hand felt. You glanced down and let it drop from your hands, you looked up again and saw his face had paled “Billy?” you asked, scared and concerned, one of your hands went to softly cup his cheek. Your eyes shifted from his face and slowly down his body until you saw his other hand pressed to his abdomen with red seeping into his shirt around his hand. “Shit” you breathed as you gingerly moved his hand 

   “shit“ he agreed 

   “Okay…” your mind was racing “your stitches probably bust. we should-” 

   “No more hospitals” 

   “But-” 

   “I agree no more hospitals” the man piped up

   You whirled around, your hands not leaving Billys body, and snapped “you shut up” you faced billy again, “babe this could be really bad, we should-”   He shook his head, his hand cupped your cheek “no hospital” he pleads “I know its been a long time but I'm sure you remember enough from patching us up back in the day to fix me” 

   You stared into his eyes for a moment before, captivated by the trust radiating from him. You nodded and you lead him to the bathroom. He sat on the closed toilet seat and you grabbed your first aid kit, hoping there'd be enough of what you’d need and convincing yourself it's not as bad as your gut was telling you it is. 

   You turned to find billy smiling to himself “what?” you asked

   “You called me ‘babe’” 

   You knelt in front of him “and? What of it?” 

   “You haven't called me that in a long time is all” his hand was clutching his still bleeding abdomen as the splotch on his shirt continued to expand.

   “And whose fault is that?” you asked as you tapped his hand, signally him to uncover his wound. He did without hesitation and your hands reached for the hem of his shirt, your mind flashing back to the hundreds of times you'd been in similar situations as kids, as teens, as young adults, as friends, as lovers. You’d patched him up a ton over the years because of his insistence on being a “physical badass” as he put it. Billy has been nearly obsessed with mastering parkour since he was a kid and you always supported him even tho the number of times he got- sometimes seriously- hurt was hard for you to see. But you learned to patch him up and he taught you some cool stuff too. You were by no means good at parkour but you had gotten pretty agile and gained some decent skills. 

   It's been a while, obviously, and this was different. This wasn't a scrape or a skinned knee or even a dislocated joint, this was a deep open wound that had just been reopened. You were nervous, your hands shook as you grabbed the hem of his shirt and lifted it over his head. You dropped the shirt to the floor and billy grabbed your trembling hand. 

   “Hey, It’s okay. You’ve got this, love” you couldn't look at him, your eyes focused on the first aid kit next to his discarded shirt. “I trust you. I know I fucked up and I know you need time and answers. I will tell you everything in time. I promise. But I need time too. I don't even know where to start with it all” you still couldn't look up at him. His big green eyes always gave him away, always expressed exactly what he was thinking and feeling and always made you melt a little. You didn't know what he’d been through but you deserved answers, sooner rather than later. 

“I trust you” he whispered again 

   “Well isn't that sweet” 

  Billys eyes shifted to the door where this ‘one’ now leaned against the frame while yours slid shut in an attempt to collect yourself. You stood and with a muttered “fuck off” you gave one a shove and closed the door in his face. You returned to your spot in front of billy, took a deep breath and started attending to his ripped stitches. You’d stitched him up once before after a misstep that resulted in a gash on his leg. He had insisted on no hospitals then as well and so you’d researched the basics of giving stitches and purchased the supplies most of which were still in your first aid kit. 

    You could feel billys eyes on you as you worked but you needed to ignore him and focus on having steady hands and make sure everything was as sanitary as possible given this was being done in your bathroom. Billys breathing was heavy and he was hissing and swearing under his breath every so often. You knew he had to be in a lot of pain, once or twice you winced with him, but you had to keep going. There was no stopping now, the second you’d started it was too late for either of you to change your minds.

   When you were finally done sewing him up, you finally glanced up at him and found him again looking at you with soft emotional eyes. You looked away, grabbed the gauze, covered the wound and said as you collected the items you’d strewn across the floor “we’ll need to change the gauze and reapply the disinfectant every few hours. You will not make any sudden movements or do anything to rip them again, yeah?” you stood and when you heard his soft “yeah” in response you headed to the kitchen sink to wash the blood from your hands. 

   “You guys are just so darn cute” 

   You gritted your teeth, rinsed the red-tinted soap down the drain and dried your hands. You turned to face the peculiar and irritating man “what promise?” 

   He looked taken aback, you weren't sure if it was your question or demeanor or something else entirely but it was written all over his features when he didn't answer you restated your question 

   “What was the promise he broke?” 

   “To you or to me?”

   “You” 

   One sighed and gestured to the chair across from where he was seated on your couch. You obliged and sat. he leaned forward, elbows on his knees again “since it seems he will not be filling you in any time soon I suppose I will.” 

  Your brow furrowed, knitting closer and closer together, and your mind raced as he spoke. You of course wanted to know about billy and his part in all this but one question stayed at the forefront of your mind as one rambled on.  Why was he telling you all this?

    When you asked you expected a short snarky answer maybe real maybe not but here he was telling you in detail about his operation and about everything they’d done. He went through each member and listed their skills and what they’d agreed to when joining him. He even went through how everyone's death was faked. By keeping tabs on you and by risking everything to feel near you and hopefully re-enter your life he’d broken every rule he agreed to when joining them and how he’d missed something because he was distracted by you and he landed himself in the hospital. 

   There was a pause after he’d finished then, 

   “Your turn” 

   You didn't move to look at him having expected this was transactional, but you still couldn't figure out why he’d told you so much. you said simply “he left, he lied, he hurt me” 

   You felt One’s eyes burning a hole in your head after a moment he said in a surprisingly soft and genuine tone “that seems like an oversimplification of a lot of history and a lot of promises” and he wasn't wrong 

   You murmured a soft “yeah” and stood. You turned, unsurprised to find Billy standing somewhere between the bathroom and where you and One were sitting, his eyes big and round and sad. His body language radiated shame from where he stood. “Ill give you two some time to talk” and with that, you went into your bedroom and closed the door. 

 Even though you'd only been awake for a few hours you were so emotionally wrung out from the past few days that as you laid down you knew you’d fall asleep, and you were so ready for it. And you did.

BACKGROUND

So the background and career is completely up to player, but this is originally what I had in mind, inspired by the movie Forever My Girl. Once (or still) a promising musician, he was on the brink of stardom six ears ago, playing gigs at underground clubs and slowly making a name for himself in whatever genre of music scene you wish! However, his rising fame was marred by a destructive lifestyle. Fuelled by drugs, alcohol and the constant pressure of the music industry, he spiralled out of control. When his girlfriend of the time, Leyla, revealed she was pregnant, he was in no state to handle the news. Overwhelmed and under the influence, he made it clear he wasn't ready to be a father. Leyla, heartbroken but determined, left New York and returned to her hometown of Briar Ridge to raise her daughter with the help of her family and best friend, Valentina. In the decade that followed, his career potentially took a nosedive, his band falling apart and reputation tarnished. He could be struggling with substance abuse and now sober, trying to piece his life back together. Or, he is still making music and well established as a musician. Whether his appearance in Briar Ridge is a step towards redemption or just another stop on his aimless journey is, of course, completely up to you!I'm pretty open to any changes, with career or reasons why.. but would love to hear your ideas of course! Their daughter is six years old, and her name is Billie.
