I wanted to keep the reblog before this post as it is, to let it stay focused on preventing burn out but especially how it is made for BLM activist, so that the BLM movement remained the one shown implicit support by the post (and my reblog).

I had thoughts, however, as it was a little funny to me, since I pretty much had to learn (or re-learn) all of this in relation to helping out wiht the Gaza situation. I actually faced burn-our the first time I tried to help, I had to step back, and almost completely "left the movement", but thankfully I knew myself enough to recognize what happened, and decide I wanted to continue.

And seeing this post reminded me of this, but also the general theme of caring, wanting to do something to help, but the very real issue anyone who cares face: by caring, and having empathy, we allow ourselves to feel involved, and so, we feel affected, and so, we have emotional stress. And as the post I linked show, if you stay in emotional stress without break, it leads to burn out. Which in turn, has a high risk of causing you to feel unable to "return" to what you were doing, rather than "simply taking a long break".

All of this is, I realize, why personally, I have issue doing anything despite caring a lot: I want to act for every injustice I see. I've often toyed with making blog(s) focused on helping others, be it resources, signal boosting, creating safe spaces, etc. I want to show I care when people speak of the injustice they face.

I care, so deeply that I find myself faced with the sheer weight of everything going on I wish I had the means to do anything about. Yet, I recognized the fact it feels like a weight is a surefire way to crumble and be unable to do anything at all. So I had to accept that no matter how "little" it feels, if I can do something, it's still better than nothing at all. That people understand, and if they don't, it's sad and I wish they did, but I have to focus my energy on what I can do rather than waste it arguing.

The harder thing to accept, and I feel needs to be recognized by anyone who cares and want to help, is that you might need to prioritize, and choose your causes. Do you do "little things" for every causes that matters to you, or do you focus on one/a few, which leaves the others with "less" of your attention/energy?

It's really hard, but that's where a part of the post I linked really spoke to me: we are not alone. To be honest, I feel like I mostly "settled" in a sad way that I had to prioritize and accept to do "little" where I can instead of not being able to do anything at all. I had thought about the fact I'm not literally carrying the weight of everything alone, that others do care and act. And yet, I don't know, it didn't fully register until now.

I am not alone, in caring, and in seeking to act. You are not alone. We are not alone. We are in this together. That's why each of us is able to find what they can do that truly works and can be sustained: we realize that, for everything we wish we could do, but cannot, there is always the space for others to do it themselves. We might never meet, nor speak to each other, nor even know, but the fact is, we all know that we aren't alone in caring.

For all we see violence and hate and all these horrible things, we remember all it takes is to look, to see people do care, and do what they can. We remember all the orgazations that have been formed to help. We remember that we aren't alone in caring.

So today, I sit here and feel like it hit me, really hit me: the act of caring is the first and most important step. What follows after, is to find what you can do, and learn to do it in a way you can sustain, so that you become a permanent member of the global community that cares and tries to change things for the better, no matter their differences. Because we find the one thing that connect us all in this: the act of caring. We realize we are never alone in caring, and most of all?

We are unstoppable in our care and dedication to make it a sustainable act, and it's why those that don't care, especially those that are the causes of injustices, want to create in-fighting. To make us feel guilty. To attack each other. To forget we're all connected by this care and all learning together to make it a sustainable force for positive change.

So don't forget, remember what connect us, and most of all: don't give up. There is no "not doing enough" or need to feel ashamed/guilty for any break you need, because caring and looking at what you can do, is already a lot. And if you are in a situation where you care, but it feels as if you cannot do anything, there are two things I can advise based on my own approach: letting others know you care, and creating safe spaces.

The last one is important, because it's what taking breaks to avoid burn out is all about: finding safe spaces where you can rest from whatever is causing you stress. I like to say that, if I realize I cannot fight, then I will dedicate myself to create the space the fighters need to rest and recover and return to the fight.

And in doing so, I "fight" in my own ways, too.

This is why I toy with the idea of having better "separation" between what each of my blog is about, to give a proper barrier between my safe spaces (safe for me and others), and the spaces to help in every way that works for me.

Another way to "fight" without truly fighting, so to speak, is to be an inspiration. It's the reason, for me, that in many different ways, you find the idea of being the change you want to see. Ask yourself this: if I imagine that who I am and how I act influence another person to be and do the same, what is the example I want to give? And imagine that this applies all the time, not just when you are in public, although you can think about the differences between public and private. Are you kind to yourself only public? Only in private? Are you even kind to yourself? What about respect? If these are things you want to see, then one way is to become these things, and let others be inspired. Refuse to engage in what you don't want to see anymore. But realize each person has their own way of fighting, of caring and learning what they can do with it.

Personally? My whole life is dedicated to making the world a better place. By choosing to treat myself the way I wish to be treated. By choosing to be what I want to see more and more, to not engage in what I don't want to spread. To create safe space. To observe, learn, think, and find ways to express it all, so that my words can help others. To directly act in the ways I can, like raising awareness, showing I care, sharing resources, and donating. But to forgive myself when I cannot, and/or need a break. And to remember I'm not alone, and let this be a comfort.

So remember: you aren't alone, and let's make things better, one step at a time, all together ♥

I really, really love the "looking forward to knowing me, as a full and complete person", because in my head, a parent isn't someone who controls you or that remains a "superior" of some sorts, a parent knows you start dependent on them, and looks forward to teaching you to become an healthy, independent person.

They give you a name because you can't choose a name for yourself yet, but once you can choose, some of us have no issue with our name, others want nicknames, and others change name for various reasons. Our parental figure(s) don't know yet what our gender will be, so they can only base themselves on how we are born, yet they can choose to not pressure us in any way and wait for us to have enough space to express how we feel inside. We can express yourself pretty early on, but consciously choosing takes a bit, yet step by step, our parental figure(s) can learn to recognize what our personality is shaping to be, what we like and dislike, and so on. Bit by bit, they see us grow into our independent.

And as parental figure(s), it should be something they celebrate, to learn to know the person we are shaping to be, and to see us learn to be our own person. Being independent doesn't mean we don't need help, it simply means we aren't dependent anymore. I would compare it to eating: when still dependent, parental figure(s) are the ones to feed you. When you grow dependent, you can feed yourself, but it doesn't mean you can never ask for help. You can still ask to be fed when you need the help. But its not an "absolute need" anymore. And that's something parental figure(s) should look forward to.

And yeah, I'm forever in love with the idea that its all about getting to know the person we grow into and supporting that growth!

well i've always been most excited about drawing expressions and i grew up with very expressive styles as my reference point (W.I.T.C.H. and atla are big examples in my mind for this, as well as just . animated movies. lmao LSDKL) so i never really took the time to break it down before, but i can explain some of the stuff i do!

as for posing, i think THE thing that helps the most is figure drawing, so i suggest looking into that for anyone wanting to improve their posing!

another thing i personally have found helpful when i was still learning the basics was this specific challenge, 25 Essential Expressions by napalmnacey, and various expression memes are a great starting point as well!

as for what i personally do,

i REALLY have a fondness for assymetrical eyebrows and just generally kinda squiggly ones! they add an uncertainty to the expression of a character, and imo can really enhance a saddened expression or make a comedic one a bit funnier!

including eye wrinkles (when they make sense ofc) is an easy way to add some exhaustion to sorrowful expressions, but i also find it a good way to make happiness feel more unrestrained and joyous

i also think it's very good to look at how its done in other works or from other artists with very expressive work. dunmeshi comes to mind!

other things can be kept in mind, like nose wrinkles or smile lines or the shape of the lips, and additional details like redness and sweat drops or the size and detail of the iris can be used to emphasize an expression or add complexity :OO

also, hands and arms may be annoying to draw but they're like one of your MOST helpful tools when conveying an expression! is your character embarrassed or overwhelmed? they may wish to hide their face! or perhaps they tend to scratch their cheek when they're uncertain, or they're frustrated and holding their head! hands are a very important thing to add :D

I always had issues figuring out what counted as romance, romantic love, and I feel like I tried to look it up before, but today I had the urge again to look for it, and found a site with great articles that were really well expressed.

So I just wanted to share some of the articles I've read, not just on what romantic attraction is, but on sexuality (with a list of terms well explained), the nuance between bi pan omni poly (sexual), and I'm throwing in a little article on unconditional love (as it does well in explaining why boundaries aren't conditions to love, and showing the difference between unconditional and conditional with simple example). This blog is a project made to share as many commissions posts from artists on Tumblr as possible.

The goal is to create a hub where artists can have their commissions equally shared for visibility, and people seeking to buy art can just scroll for easy access to a wide variety of commissions from tons of different artists!

As much as it can be great if something is clearly stated or shown in canon, I actually love when things are left for subtext and/or "open for interpretation or imagination".

Taking the example of ships: I love it when relationships don't have a clear explicit canon "confirmation", because it allows each person to read the dynamic the way they prefer. Of course, sometimes, canon subtext still heavily implies one type of relation. But it's still more open than when characters kiss&become a couple, or characters explictly speak of being family.

And in general, as OP mention, it can be fun to "find the bread crumbs" and follow the trail, so to speak. To find the story that is told in the little details, in everything that is beyond clear words and explicit gestures. Sometimes it truly is open to interpretation (for ex: hint at closeness without saying which type of relationship), other times, the trail of hints lead you recognize canon subtext heavily leans into suggesting a specific relationship.

However, what I love about subtext vs "clearly canon" is when it's done so well that, whether its truly open to interpretation, or suggest something without telling, the fact it's still only subtext means you can still enjoy playing with a different interpretation.

Yeah, sometimes, the creator might want to be explicit about their character gender or orientation, or who ends up together with who, or whatever else is made clear rather than left to subtext.

But the issue with this actually make it harder to normalize LGBTQ+ representation in particular, because it has to stand out (be clearly canon) to be viewed as "valid canonically". It plays into the narrative that characters are cishet unless proven otherwise.

When in truth, characters should be left open for interpretation unless canon is clear and explicit on their gender, orientation, or relationships. A character isn't cishet by default, they are "we don't know" and even with subtext, it is at best "a strong suggestion they are X, but no explicit confirmation", which should be enjoyed as much as "explicit confirmation they are X".

People really need to learn to enjoy subtext and what's left open to interpretation, because fiction as a whole would be so much duller, if everything had to be explicit.

As a side note: I wonder if this issue relates to what I remember seeing once, that some people have issues "reading between the lines", which would mean they might genuinely have trouble noticing subtext, or understanding what it is saying. Or they might notice well enough, but they tend to not consider something "valid" unless its explicit (as opposed to "between the lines").

With that said, "reading between the lines" is, in fact, a skill. So even if someone genuinely has issues with seeing subtext and/or its comprehension, they can learn to understand it better, or at the very least, they can recognize that subtext and open to interpretation are just as valid as what is explicit.

i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story

Happy New Year 2025 from WWC

Hello everyone,

Merry, cheery holidays! The WWC team and I have been making many silent strides closer to a writingwithcolor.org.

What we've been up to

While the going has been slow, we've made a lot of progress since raising donations from you guys to go towards a .org, which we've secured ever since. With this support and encouragement, we plan to maintain the blog as a permanent resource.

As for progress and use of donations

Times have been busy and oh, so trying, but we're trying harder. Also, donations (and free time) have been going to good use.

For instance, we've:

Cleaned up (Added, removed, renamed, combined) WWC post tagging for clarity and consistency.

Created mirroring pages on new blog (e.g. navigation, stereotypes and tropes navigation, etc.)

Migrated all blog posts to our standalone blog (4000 some posts)

Maintained the URL ($12 a year, Writingwithcolor.org, hidden from view lately as we get closer to launch, although we've had it redirecting to Tumblr only until recently)

Overall building out blog content on the host site ($15.99 a month)

Next steps are to:

Finalize our theme (The fun part)

Finish blog post cleanup on the migrated posts (WIP!).

More actions at a latter date after publishing

Currently, I have been going through each and every post, one-by-one, to:

Edit, update and refine content

Fix broken links

Improve accessibility, particularly on image-heavy posts

A lot of changed in the world since 2014, so we want even our earliest posts to reflect today's standards or at least note if something is olden days or we have a more helpful post or resource since.

This is the end stretch before we have an official SOFT LAUNCH!

But to be clear, as intended, we'll continue to post on tumblr as well as long as it sticks around.

Our new prospective publish date is for Spring 2025, in which we can also re-open to questions, release new guides, invite new members, etc. etc.

But who knows - perhaps we will get a chance to answer some questions in between then.

I agree with everything said before, and I want to add: there is no greater way to affirm "your body is your own" than making sex work legal.

If you genuinely believe that each person has a right to choose what they want and don't want for their own body, then they should be able to choose whether or not to make sex their legal activity.

It's also a matter of fairness: if sex work is illegal, those who don't want to do sex work can live as they want, but those who want to do sex work cannot live as they want. If sex work is legal, anyone who wants to do sex work can do it, and those who don't want to do sex work are still free to not do it.

People aren't saying "you should do sex work", they are saying "you should allow people who do want to do sex work to have a legal, safe way to do it".

And again: beyond the fact it offers a safe, legal way to do it, it's about being free to do, and not do, what you want with your body. It's about "my body is my own".

"My body is my own" should include being free to choose if you want to make sex your legal work.

Puritanism is getting worse around the globe and conservatives and fascists will absolutely be first going harder against porn, then use that against queer people. You HAVE to realise this and oppose anti porn measures and laws, be in solidarity with sex workers, and listen to them when they call this shit out. It's going to be vitally important.
