Would you recommend the SSSS comic? I know little of it beside the very beautiful artstyle and premise

to answer the question of if i would recommend SSSS as a comic: yes, yes i would.

a description for those who don't know: Stand Still Stay Silent is a post-apocalyptic horror + adventure webcomic set in the nordics (norway, sweden, denmark, finland, iceland) that have been isolated from the rest of the world and gone back to their old gods. the the world outside of safe zones is full of trolls and beasts - humans and mammals that got infected by a horrible virus and turned into monsters. the story follows a ragtag crew that ventures into the old world (derelict denmark) on an expedition to collect books.

the comic updated every workday until it concluded in 2022, and consists of two Adventures. the creator had plans for many adventures with these characters in this world, but ended it after two when she wanted to take a new direction with her life.

what i love about it:

- the art is GORGEOUS. it's been a huge source of inspiration for me. open any page and it's a masterpiece, and you will ask yourself "how the FUCK did she update this FIVE DAYS A WEEK"

- the characters are wonderful and endearing. i just, i love them so much. i am so thankful lalli hotakainen exists he is one of my #1 blorbos forever

- the world is so cool. the blend of chunky sci-fi and norse mythology fantasy magic slaps. it goes so hard. i fell so hard for this comic when i got to the big ferry ship with a viking style dragon head prow added to it. it's everything

- it really really gets nordic cultures. it's difficult to explain all the dynamics and nuances but it just gets it. it brings me as a scandinavian a lot of joy to read a story that speaks to my heart this way. the attitudes, the language barriers, the cultural differences... it was so refreshing to me in a media landscape dominated by american stories. when the pandemic hit, i decided to reread the comic because i found such an odd comfort in seeing how it depicted the scandinavian countries reacting to, well, a pandemic.

- there's kittycats

what i don't like about it:

- the most glaring and obvious flaw is that everyone in the comic is white. there's not a single character of color anywhere, not even i background shots or the prologue. there's no mention of the saami people (the indigenous people of northern europe), either. i believe this was done in ignorance more than malicious intent, but the implications are Extremely Bad and it's been bothering me (AND MANY OTHERS) since day 1. that is the number one caveat i will give to anyone wanting to check this comic out. i've been in the discourse trenches and i am not going to excuse this. it's just bad!

- you can tell in the middle of adventure 2 that the creator has kind of lost interest in the work, around the time when she found jesus i guess. like, very few people can keep up work on the same creative project for years and years and years and i think it's fine that she wanted to drop it, but it's a bit sad to see the comic dragged to its end like a limp corpse, and feeling like the creator no longer really cares about the characters.

- minna sundberg has said and done some questionable things, presumably gotten somewhat radicalised over time, and has also converted to hardcore christianity which is what her new works are about. there's nothing about this in SSSS - there is a moment of christianity represented in the story in a sort of mythological sense, just like the other religions, but this was written before minna's conversion. her new works... are a Choice. i have much to say about them, and i have, and im not gonna rehash it now.

SO YEAH hopefully this will help you take an Informed Choice! i got into this comic in 2015 and was deep in the fandom and it's for better or for worse part of my soul foundation now.

i also recommend A Redtail's Dream, minna's "practice comic" before SSSS, based on finnish mythology and the kalevala.

Welcome to Whump: the Musical!!

What tf is that, I hear you ask? I'll be glad to tell you, since I've been working on this behind the scenes of my other projects for quite some time!

Whump: the Musical is a 31 day whump event where the prompts are all based on themes and lyrics from a variety of different musicals! Spanning from Wicked to Cats to Hamilton, there's something for everyone!

Although this event is brought to you by a self-proclaimed theater nerd, this event is open to all fandoms. You do not have to have a lick of prior musical theatre knowledge to participate. The theater community is welcoming and embracing, and we would love for you to use our niches as inspiration to whump your blorbos! This is also an all media inclusive event! If you would like to write a fic, provide lovely art, or make an edit, God knows, anything goes.

This event will span from March 1st to March 31st because as far as I could find, there wasn't a whump event happening then!! Plus, it's just in time for all of y'all's spring musicals!! The prompt list will be released much earlier (like in the next few days lol) because I know I personally take forever to prep, and I want everyone to have more than enough time to plan out whatever they want to do.

A new month, a new challenge! This month's challenge is:

Whether it's a canonically geriatric couple, your babyfaced blorbos aged up, a songfic inspired by Eminem's "I'll be only person in the nursing home flirting", or you update your ongoing het ship fic with a sudden pivot where the male love interest decides to fuck a 60-year-old man instead: anything goes, so long as it's old, man, and yaoi.

I see comments like these from bots have been going around lately, and have as shown received them myself, so I decided to just set my works to have it so that only registered users can comment. This means guests can *still* read, but can't comment on my works. Which is a shame considering I barely get comments to begin with. (Most of the comments I've received this week alone were from bots, and only the occasional real, actual user.)

Having an ao3 account means: being able to bookmark fics you like, being able to make collections of fics you like, being able to read and comment on all (including user-only) fics (with the exception of if the author disables comments), also post your own stuff, having a convenient place (inbox) where you can sort through replies and comments you've received, be able to get gifted works (there is a setting for if you wish not to, and a button you can use to refuse gifts), customise your icon and URL, mute/block users you wish not to interact with, subscribe your favourite authors/works/series and get email updates when they post (authors cannot see their subscribers' usernames and only the amount), etc.

I know people who feel anxious about getting an account for a variety of reasons, like being recognised by your URL or just the idea of making a new account (anxiety has no logic, you cannot control it, so these feelings are valid), but I swear making an account is worth it. Especially if you want to continue to support us authors in a more direct way. If otherwise then you do you.

And, despite the fact I could just as easily post my writing on this blog instead, keep in mind that it's official that tumblr is using user posts and feeding it to AI. I do not wish for this to happen to any of my works. I am unsure if posting any of my stuff here is safe at all, even with disabling third-party sharing, so for now I'll probably refrain from sharing anything but links to my works on ao3.

The Ultimate Vriska Poll - Calling for Nominations

My Tumblr Sexywoman poll is going well and I'm having a lot of fun, so I'm thinking of holding a poll to find Tumblr's most iconic Vriska-archetype character. If you don't know what a Vriska archetype is, Tumblr user @doubleca5t coined the term as follows:

Sexypedia didn't have a specific page for the Vriska archetype (the link shown in the screenshot leads to a page titled "Controversial"), but here's what it has to say on the topic:

Now that Tumblr's had time to get a smattering of blorbos that can be considered Vriskas, I want to pit these bad bitches against each other. I want to put them in a box and shake them until they fight to the death. I want the intense campaigning, voter fraud, and sabotage that happened around the original Vriska Serket in the Tumblr Sexywoman poll by Tumblr user @lutzlig. But I want it 32-fold.

The start date for this tournament will tentatively be February 19th. The structure will likely be like the Tumblr Sexywoman poll. Before that, I will be collecting a list of at least 16, preferably 32, Vriska-archetype characters. I will be considering nominations until February 17th, 6 PM PST.

The character you nominate must fulfill at least 4/5 of the requirements of a Vriska. UPDATE: I have decided to expand requirement 4 to just "queer" instead of strictly "attracted to women." Requirements 2, 3, and 5 are mandatory. This is so that male (and nb) characters like Bakugou from BNHA can still participate. As well as characters that don't really get shipped a lot. Like Lilith from The Owl House. (I'm sorry queen I've found someone more controversial) However, I will reject characters if I feel they fall more into other archetypes. Like Komaedas.

How I would do 2023 ship stats

You know, normally, I don't bother to do much with top AO3 ships stats. That's partly because someone already does it and partly because I think they're stupid stats that just lead to people gloating about their blorbos "winning". But I do routinely have a look at what's new and popular when I'm doing things like making a dance party playlist for Escapade Con, just so I know what fans might be getting into lately. I have to say, collecting these is not hard. It's not even particularly time consuming.

Doing it super efficiently would be easier with a script, yes, but most fandom stats aren't actually collected with scripts, and if you're only looking for the top 100 ships, you can more or less do that by hand. How I would set about it for you, the random fan who's curious but not curious enough to learn to code, would be to log into AO3 and then find tags where you can see the sidebar. They should be tags that encompass the whole archive and that are mandatory and unique… in other words, ratings.

Since every AO3 work must have one and only one rating, you can just check these five and get a good sense of what's on there. There are some minor wrinkles to iron out, but it's a good preliminary research step.

The way you want to do it is to start with a spreadsheet. Open up your ratings URLs (and also paste them in the spreadsheet for convenience—google sheets will make clickable links). Copy all the sidebar top ships into a list. Filter out all of these ships. Copy the next set, etc. After a while, you'll have a good list that's longer than 100 ships but that most likely contains everything really popular. (Filter for things posted/updated/whatever in the past year if that's the data you're after. Filter for f/f or whatever topic you're interested in if that's the question you're asking instead.)

Use your spreadsheet to generate the actual links for each of these ships. AO3 URLs are predictable: you can generate them from knowing the exact spelling of the tag and the normal format of this type of URL. (There are a bunch of standard spreadsheet functions that can be used to get rid of the work count numbers you've copied from AO3 to get just the pure ship tags. I'd use things like =right() and =left().)

Open the links. Copy the work totals back to your spreadsheet. Voilà!

One drawback of this method is, obviously, that it's boring and tedious, but if you didn't like boring and tedious, why were you collecting fandom stats anyway?

A more important drawback is that in using exclude filters, it's possible you could miss a ship. If the posting patterns are just right, there might be something that has its numbers reduced by excluding other ships that should be on your list. You could have a similar issue if the ships on your list are mostly one rating (so higher in those searches) and some other slightly larger overall ship is spread more evenly. I would try to ameliorate this problem by looking at the sizes of the smallest ships you're covering. They will likely be bigger than the entire fandom section for most fandoms. Taking another look at the bigger fandoms that could be hiding a small-end-of-big ship can help double-check that you haven't missed anything. Grabbing the top 130 or 150 ships in some search while only looking for the top 100 will likely find most of the edge stuff too.

Add any ships that look like they should be double checked to your spreadsheet. Add their work totals. Re-sort your list.

Another thing to consider is that AO3 keeps track of the most recent update date on fics. That's what's easy to search by. If you're only interested in when a work was first posted, easy manual filtering isn't the way to go… However, if the objective is to see which ship tags were active in a given year, most recent update date is the relevant piece of data anyway.

You're not going to recreate centreoftheselights' exact analysis unless you collect data year to year, but you can come up with something pretty similar that answers a similar question, and you don't need to be a programmer to do it.

In the end, accept that some data require hard collection methods that a site doesn't easily offer you and you might have to scrape multiple times a year with a script if you want to know that particular thing… or you might have to randomly sample and hand-count as with FFN shipping stats. (Yes, I've done it. It can be done. It's just annoying.)

So when you're setting out to look at some stats question, the big first step is to decide what you're even asking and why and whether you're just wimping out and going with what's easy to collect instead of what you actually want to know.

...now I'm kind of curious. Maybe I'll go pull some 2023 numbers.

Hi! Every now and then I remember Mothy and the brilliant long-run storytelling that is TEC, but I always have something come up that kind of pushes away my going down the rabbit hole for updates.

I just got one of those random notifications tumblr sometimes sends when a blog uploads after a while of inactivity, and it was yours. And I have one question, because at this point I'm genuinely so lost. Are the Evillious Chronicles over? I ask this in the sense of "has Mothy ended that and started a new Chronicle?". I read on the pinned post you have that there's an Ending (as in, literally a section called Ending" but it's not very detailed and to me it reads confusingly, but that might be because I'm out of the loop as of now still). So I guess I'm asking whether the songs he's been making say, since 2020 (to give you a random closer year to present) are still connected to Evillious?

Short answer: It's a new storyline and isn't directly connected to Evillious.

Long answer: So yknow how like The Hobbit is a self-contained story and The Lord of the Rings is a self-contained story but they share the same setting, some characters, and some themes, but you don't need to read one to understand the other? It's like that.

Longer answer: So at this point I'd say mothy has these main "arcs" going on (in order of release for the most part): The Daughter of Evil, Deadly Sins of Evil, Original Sin Story, Torture Tower Doesn't Sleep, and E.A.T. There's also his smaller collection which I like to call "fourth period bullshit" (where the Unlock City and Story of Evil novels go). The Daughter of Evil and Deadly Sins of Evil both take place in the same Evillious setting, with Original Sin Story being the origin story of it all. For a while it was assumed Torture Tower Doesn't Sleep was its own thing with loose references to the Evillious setting for funsies, until we got a throwaway line in a more recent publication indicating it was a parallel universe.

The main story of the Evillious setting (aka the Third Period) ended with the release of master of the heavenly yard. All the big arcs established with all that worldbuilding since 2007/8-ish has wrapped up. Since then mothy's gone back and did the Original Sin Story novels, fleshing out that backstory. He's also indicated he would like to do more focusing on the stories of the Three Heroes from the Daughter of Evil series sometime, but hasn't done so yet. E.A.T is a series he's been working on focusing on Banica's exploits after master of the heavenly yard, but because the story focuses on Banica & the rest of the graveyard ending crew traveling to parallel worlds it doesn't change anything we know about the main Evillious setting and story. Because multiverse bullshit there are parallel characters to the Evillious characters we know (this is a plot point), with one of the most obvious being Sister Clarith from the eponymous song Sister Clarith's Curious Night. Some other characters have also been revealed to be travelling the parallel worlds as well as of Atelier Horloge ;)

tl;dr: Main Evillious story is over. The story of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Third Period has wrapped up with a pretty bow. Banica however is too badass to be contained to one franchise and has gone off to create her own by hopping between parallel worlds. mothy is also planning on continuing to fill in some backstory and timeline gaps for some of his other special blorbos. You're not missing any critical information or major twists from the Evillious story as a whole by not reading this content though.

The initiated already know: Baldur's Gate 3 brainrot blog. I post my OC screenshots, my own and reblogged fanfiction, reblog A LOT of blorbos (Halsin, Gortash, Raphael,..), whether it's art or headcanons. I do not have any VP tools, so my screens are only lightly edited to be prettier, and that's it. I prefer to avoid posting negative stuff, so it's just batshit obsession and thoughts.

Diehard fans surely got the joke: Star Wars brainrot, and that goes for every conceivable piece of the fandom, even the bits you might not agree with - I don't discriminate. My all-time favorites are: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Bode Akuna. Yes, just the two, because I also have a huge pile of characters I love, but don't really focus on: Padmé, Ahsoka, Ventress, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, Din Djarin, lil Grogu, Cody, infinite number of other Clones, ... soooo many. My top two are just the guys I actually write about. Bode's and Obi-Wan's fics are unfortunately on hold right now (sigh).

As the name suggests, this is my Cyberpunk 2077 blog. I used to do a lot of virtual photography in that one - and yes, this time I mean real VP, though still no paid tools, just vanilla and free mods. I love Goro Takemura and ship my fem V with him heavily - wrote a dope fanfiction about them called 'Broken' (and following parts 'Gimme Danger' and 'Last Caress'). I reblog other cp77 vp (especially of Goro) and fanart. I don't currently play the game or shoot photos, but I have a large collection I plan to drizzle over the next few months, until I maybe decide to go back to cp77 for a while again and finally play Phantom Liberty that's been waiting for me for a long time now xD.

A mix of obsessions with one man in common: John Hopkins, a British actor :). Seen in Midsomer Murders and lately heard in various games as a voice actor. I've fallen for him for the first time 20 years ago - and he returned to me as Erend in Horizon games (Zero Dawn & Forbidden West). I love the games and its characters and take a lot of screenshots, too :). So it's a weird dump of Ereloy, Kotaloy (because Noshir) and Midsomer Murders :3

Bits of trivia: I'm Czech, cis woman (bi & poly and, frankly, hyper), 32, in a relationship, mom to a 5yo boy, a writer struggling to finish and publish her first original novel, drowning her sorrows in fanfic instead :). I got to most of my fandoms quite late in life, because where I live this info only started to properly flow in with the coming of the internet. I'm usually a casual fan, though when I hit a gold vein I can get a bit obsessed. I love writing fanfiction, which is mostly why I'm here on this site. I self-insert a lot (therapy writing) and usually ship us, with the rare occasion of finding a couple where I can identify with one of them (or mold them to my image because I like or even fancy them). I've spent my life believing I was hetero and discovered I'm not only once I (finally) was in a hetero relationship and had a kid, so... my ships are also hetero. It's a habit, not hating, I don't discredit any gay ships (maybe quietly to myself when they don't make any sense to me character-wise, lol). My AO3 account: XindiChick I usually try to write even the most niche of my ships in a way that doesn't require much knowledge of the original, so you're welcome to browse and read to your heart's content if you happen to like my style. I welcome any interactions, especially comments, because I don't get many.

What is the one or two Batman stories that you personally recommend reading? What's your favourite Batman story?

As agonizing a choice as this was I think my (current, at least) two favorite Batman stories are - "The Murder Club" from Joey Esposito collected in Batman: Urban Legends vol. 5, which is a shorter story but I loved it so much. It's Thomas and Martha Wayne traveling forward in time to be horrified at how their son turned out, but Dick and Damian help smooth things over (in their own ways) and eventually they come to understand why Bruce does what he does. I love it especially for just how important Dick is to the dynamics in the family, that in so many ways he's the heart of them. Add in some gorgeous art and it's one of my all time favorites already. - "Robin and Batman" by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen, which also has beautiful art and is an updated retelling of some of the early days of Dick and Bruce as the titular characters. I love it because it's a Bruce who doesn't really know how to be a parent, he makes some pretty terrible mistakes, but he's also genuinely trying and he clearly loves that kid so much and they find their way forward together. Plus, he absolutely cannot EVER win an argument even with this nine year old child and that delights me endlessly. It also has one of the best hugs in all of comics, I'm not taking any arguments. I have more recs scattered through my comics recs tag (to be updated soon-ish) but those are the two I would limit myself to if I could only rec two. They hit my id the hardest, they focus on my Blorbo, and they're both gorgeously illustrated!
