#blue paladin darling au

Yandere rivals Lance vs Keith ~ (platonic/ romantic vibes for both if that makes sense ?) with a paladin in training ?
I haven't finished the show but I did do some research. If things seem wrong or out of character that's why. I got impatient and really wanted go write this also it's been in my drafts for a bit :( I may rewrite this in the future if it makes no sense.
(AU where Darling is trained to be the Blue Paladin by Lance and Keith-)
Edit: I actually want to flesh this out at some point, I can make this AU work with more tweaking lol.
Yandere! Lance vs Keith
Ft. Paladin-In-Training! Darling
Potential Voltron: Legendary Defender Spoilers/Black Paladin! Keith AU
Pairing: Platonic/Romantic - Rivalry
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Jealousy, Dubious companionship, I'm going against canon plot intentionally for once in my life, Manipulation, Leans platonic but either works, Possible OOC characters I apologize in advance, Overprotective behavior, Controlling behavior, Mature language at one point, Slight violence, This is mostly just them being competitive.
Tumblr media
There's two ways I could tackle this.
I could've written this with Black Paladin! Keith and Red Paladin! Lance but I also could've done a more general version with them still as their previous colors.
For this I'll base it sometime after Keith gains the Black Lion and Lance swaps to the Red Lion with research I did but in an AU. (I'm sorry if things seem off due to this :()
When the Blue Lion lacks a Paladin after Shiro's connection got severed from the Black Lion, something needed to be done.
A Paladin is needed for the Blue Lion... and you were chosen.
How you meet Lance and Keith is through your training.
Zarkon is still a threat and you can't form Voltron without the Blue Lion.
Essentially the gist of this is Lance and Keith act as teachers towards you, that was the idea in my head even if it doesn't make sense in canon.
Let's bend canon a bit as much as I hate to.
Obviously Lance is going to want the job of teaching you.
He knows the Blue Lion better than anyone, right?
Meanwhile Keith wants the job as he thinks if you connect with him it'll help connect to your Lion faster.
Lance is still a bit teasing and playfully flirty with you but is mature.
Keith still has to keep him in line yet it's easier than when they were beginner Paladins.
Keeping this general they both mostly have a mentor role with you.
Hunk and Pidge help you with training at times but Keith and Lance are your main teachers.
Lance sometimes brags about being your main mentor due to his past connection with the Blue Lion.
Keith shuts him down by reminding him that he's still leader.
They're both protective yet stubborn.
There's times they'd fight as they've been rivals with each other even before their new roles (according to Lance for the most part).
In terms of who you'd be the closest with... it depends.
You could be close to Lance, due to how often you train together and how playful he is towards you.
Learning to be a Paladin can be stressful and he wants you to stay in a good mood with him!
He teaches you how to use your Bayard, which appears to give you a preferred weapon you'd use.
He even teaches you how to properly use your Lion, you need to truly connect, after all.
Lance loves to praise you... he thinks you're a good fit for the Lion he used to use.
Keith is more serious and protective with training.
As the Black Paladin he feels it is his duty to teach you bravery in battle and how to use your given weapon in battle.
It's mostly Lance giving you Lion training and Keith giving you battle training.
Depending on which training you like more is who you're closest to.
This kind of rivalry isn't entirely violent it's more just competitive.
Their obsession just starts as who can train you better.
When you get closer to them that's when it swaps to something a bit more than competitive.
The two trust each other but they get jealous.
Lance gets more jealous than Keith.
Keith didn't have to step in...
He could've taught you battle tactics and Lion techniques alone!
Keith thinks Lance is being petty as usual, but secretly wishes he could train you alone too.
Paladins need constant training, when the two do train together it's harsher than normal.
It's like they're trying to one-up each other and it's almost always Lance instigating it.
Lance tries to make the whole rivalry all about impressing you.
Keith hates that you make Lance give into past behavior and wishes the Red Paladin would get ahold of himself around you.
Keith's much calmer as a leader, more stoic even.
He gives into his protective behavior when you're threatened.
In fact, your safety is the one thing that makes them work together and drop the rivalry momentarily.
What kind of teacher would either of them be if they allowed you to be hurt?
In this scenario they aren't really the kidnapping type of yandere.
They are sometimes violent but keep their composure around you.
Pidge and Hunk admit they fight and are competitive with your attention, but tell you they mean well.
They both care for you, platonic or romantic.
They'll work together when they need to.
They'd both be controlling at times, unfortunately.
Lance manipulates you into staying with him longer by using training as an excuse.
Keith is... uh... busy! So, Lance needs to train you in battle now!
Keith finds this irritating.
Keith uses his role of leader to get payback by giving Lance another task instead of training, allowing Keith to help you with your Lion.
Which pisses off Lance.
They may fight but they can work together when it's needed.
They applaud you when you're able to form Voltron for the first time with them
They both know with their training, you'll be a good edition to Team Voltron and defend the universe alongside them both.
Even if they do fight over your attention behind the scenes.

Note
if it’s not too many, 6, 23, and 26 for the otp asks? :) (or just whichever you’d like to answer!)
Thank you for the ask!
I'll do Dimivain for 6 and 26, and my ot4 for 23.
6: Which one reads OTP prompts and says “Oh that’s us!” and which one goes “Eh, not really”?
Dimitri is, Oh, that's us; and Sylvain is Eh, not really — except he can't do it. Sylvain can't do more than wince because Dimitri is soft and sincere and excited to have something romantic to share. So Dimitri points to a friends-to-lovers trope even though this is new to them, to a line of a poem about someone's lover being perfect as a statue but just as implacable, while they're both a little transparent, or something about lounging on a beach when they've never been to one together.
"Oh, that's us!"
But Sylvain just sees Dimitri's attention. His joy. It can be them for a minute.
26: Who takes a selfie when the other one falls asleep on their shoulder?
Sylvain.
Dimitri's too paranoid about breaking things. He wouldn't want to break his phone for his enthusiasm, or Sylvain's peace by dropping his phone on his boyfriend. He'll just enjoy the soft pressure and the sound of his breathing.
Meanwhile Sylvain needs to memorialize the moment. Not only was Dimitri finally able to catch a break, but being Sylvain he'd likely be worried about endings, and would want to cherish the moment.
23: Who comes home from work to see that the other one bought a puppy?
Omg. I almost can't believe that it's Claude that gets the pet. Claude who needs to plan forty years in advance. But he's also the one who will dedicate himself after a few tender moments.
I ... kind of wrote this in my soulmate au. He still talks to his partners in advance but he gets a kitten named Honor in a spur of the moment encounter. Honor will be renamed Ghaymah when she moves in to Claude's apartment; which is what I called his wyvern in my post canon fic.
629 words from Chapter 33 of my fic I Wanna Be Yours below the cut.
.
Galahad skirted through their legs, meowing when he realized he could be reunited with his mate.
“You behave yourself,” Ashe warned.
“He’s been fixed since?” Marianne confirmed.
“Yeah,” Ashe sighed, “but he stood on one of the kittens the first time we let him see them. He’s seen them a few times since, but I still worry.” He closed the door behind their little gathering, keeping Galahad in the hall.
His room was neat and spoke of his work and hobbies. His bed was hastily made, the covers blue and patterned with the phases of the moon. Ashe sat on the edge of it, scaring the white and grey cat awake. She meowed at him with a yawn.
“So this is Paladin,” Ashe said, laughing a little as he introduced his cats.
“Very noble parents,” Claude observed, and Lorenz bumped his elbow against Claude’s back.
“Ingrid calls them my Gal Pals.”
Marianne giggled sweetly, and Ashe turned to watch. He waved the others in as he stood again, moving to the open door of the closet. He cooed and kissed for the babies, and Paladin jumped down to join him, sniffing the tiny creatures that waddled into the light on skinny little legs. They were met with gasps and coos, and Marianne moved to join Ashe on the floor.
“They’re so little,” Claude whined. He hesitated a moment, until Marianne looked back at him, before joining them on his knees.
Lorenz sat on the bed, craning to watch as Ashe carefully reached out to scoop up a white kitten with a pink nose to drop in Marianne’s lap.
“Aren’t you darling?” she praised, met with meeps and sniffles. Paladin came to bump Marianne’s hands with her paw, and she did her best to orient the kitten on her thighs, to cradle the young creature while keeping her hands free.
Ashe placed a white kitten with a tri colored nose in Claude’s lap next, but the kitten was squirming, so Claude let her back to the floor, wiggling a fingertip for the kitten’s attention.
The third kitten, grey and white, was brought onto the bed by Lorenz’s side to his surprise.
“Careful,” Ashe requested.
“Of course,” Lorenz confirmed. “What a baby.” He ran his thumb over the top of the kitten’s head, pulling away when curious teeth came as a surprise.
“So that’s Justice,” Ashe said, about the kitten in Marianne’s lap, and she was struck with a delighted laugh. “Honor,” Ashe pointed to the kitten falling over as she raised her hindquarters, trying to intimidate Claude’s fingers. “And that one’s Chivalry,” he said about the kitten on the bed, “but Caspar calls him Tapeworm.”
All three of his guests looked at him with concern, Lorenz pulling his hand once again away from the gnawing kitten. “What?”
Ashe rolled his eyes and clicked his tongue. “He’s attached. We can’t have more than five cats in the household, so these guys need to be adopted out, but Caspar seems to think Dedue’s going to move out soon, and we definitely can’t afford this place just the two of us, so if he’s moving out, he could technically keep Tapeworm if no one else adopts him. But he’s healthy, no tapeworms to worry about.”
Claude did his best to laugh politely as Lorenz groaned, spooking Tapeworm by placing the whole of his hand around his back. “You had better hope you’re adopted,” he told the kitten. “Chivalry is a much finer name than Tapeworm.”
“Do the others have homes?” Claude asked, rolling his fingers on the floor so that his nails made a clattering noise.
“Not yet,” Ashe confirmed. Realization hit him. “Would you like one?”
“Claude, you don’t need a kitten,” Lorenz said quickly, so that Claude frowned in his direction.

The tale of Robin and Gale Hood; Ben Hardy x reader Chap. 1
*Author’s note*
Okay so firs the gif has NOTHING to do with the story, that was just the 1st gif I saw out of the borhap gifs that was displayed. So this came after the success of my Disney Aladdin AU fic so I decided to do a Robin Hood fic, so as a little cast list for you all here’s what I’ve got. I’ll also update the cast list as each new character is introduced so that none of you get lost. Hope you all enjoy this little AU fic starring our beloved Borhap cast.
Also on a side note, any italics written like this signifies a change in narration where the character of Alan O’Dale speaks his own narration verses what I’ll be writing.
Robin Hood: Rami Malek
Little John: Joe Mazzello
Prince John: Paul Prenter
Sir Heston: voiced by Allen Leech
King Richard (mentioned): Roger Taylor.
Alan O’Dale: Freddie Mercury (think 1975 version of Freddie)

_____________________________________________________________
The legend of Robin Hood.  Ahhh yes, that handsome rouge who robbed the rich to feed the poor, who led a band of Merry men and made their home in Sherwood Forest.  But there is more to the tale than meets the eye, and more people were involved in his rise to fame and glory.  Like me.
Oi I’m over here, the handsome black-haired devil with the harp. Yes hello there my darlings. The name’s Alan O’Dale, and I am a minstrel.  That’s an early day folk singer, I go about parading songs from town to town, kingdom to kingdom about brave knights, fierce battles, and of course my favorite stories, love stories.
And do I have two of the best love stories to share with you lovely darlings.  Thankfully it all takes place at the same time so I don’t need to run my mouth on for very long.  Anyways let’s first open our tale up to two dashing young men walking through the forest.
Two of the best friends anyone could ever ask for.  These two young men were known other than Robin Hood and Little John.  Now it didn’t start it off that way at first, those two chuckleheads always kept crossing each other’s paths as children and constantly argued and fought over territory, women, you name it.
But when they reached their late teens, Robin was one day captured by the despicable, ugly, and revolting Sheriff of Nottingham.  Fortunately with the help of an additional 3rd party, Robin was saved from the hangman’s noose and from then on, Robin and Little John were the best of friends. You don’t believe me, let me sing you a little something.
Tuning the harp, Freddie then begins to play an uplifting little tune as he begins to sing.
Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest Laughin' back and forth at what the other'ne has to say Reminiscin', This-'n'-thattin' havin' such a good time Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day
Never ever thinkin' there was danger in the water They were drinkin', they just guzzled it down Never dreamin' that a schemin' sheriff and his posse Was a-watchin' them an' gatherin' around
Robin Hood and Little John runnin' through the forest Jumpin' fences, dodgin' trees an' tryin' to get away Contemplatin' nothin' but escape an' fin'lly makin' it Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day
Deep in the forest on top of a tree there hid two young men in their mid to late-20’s.  One was a pale white man with long shoulder length auburn brown hair.  His eyes were a mixed brownish-green and he was a handsome young man.
The man beside him was around the same age, if not slightly older and had skin that almost seemed to be kissed by the sun.  His eyes were an intense blue color that could almost hypnotize you and at the same time make you feel relaxed.  His short jet black hair topped off his head.
Together the two of them wore a similar green and brown clothes. Similar to a ranger’s outfit.  Fit to camouflage them within the forest terrain, but also enough layers to keep them warm from the elements be it rain, sleet, snow and hail.
The two young men watched as the Sheriff of Nottingham and his men gave up on the search after losing them and retreating back to the city. Once they fled the forest, the two men threw themselves back against the top of the tree branches and laughed their heads off.
“Ohh we sure showed those clowns who the real woodsmen are!” boasted Little John.
“Indeed we have Little John.” It was then Little John saw on top of his friend’s and boss’ famed yellow hat an arrow sticking right through it.
“I wouldn’t be too quick to boast my friend. Take a look at your hat. She’ll not be pleased to see that.” Robin picked his hat up and his eyes widened in surprise and he said as he took the arrow out and fiddled with the newly made hole in his hat.
“Hello. This one had my name on it didn’t it? They’re getting better you know.” He placed his hat back on top of his head. “You’ve got to admit it, they are getting better.”
“Yeah. And when that day comes the Sheriff will have a rope hanging around our necks.” Little John said gravely.  He then mimed out a hanging as he proceeded to make a brief choking sound.  “It’ll be hard to laugh hanging there Robin.”
“Ha! The Sheriff and his whole posse couldn’t lift you off the ground. En Garde!” he then flicked the arrow right at Little John which went through his own smaller green hat.
“Oi watch it you bastard that’s the only hat she made for me!” Little John exclaimed as he took his hat off the arrow.
“Oh come along my friend. If she can patch mine up a hundred times, she’ll patch yours up as well. At least she won’t kill you for it.” Robin said nonchalantly as he leaned up against the trunk of the tree.
“You know something Robin I’ve been thinking.”
“Thinking that’s a first.” Robin teased.  Little John glared at his friend before saying.
“I’m serious here. Are we good guys or bad guys? I mean our famed mantra of robbing the rich to feed the poor.”
“‘Rob?’” Robin tsked. “That’s a naughty word we never rob. We just—sorta borrow a bit from those you can afford it.”
“Borrow?” Little John chuckled. “Then we truly are in deep debt.” Before Robin could say another word, from the distance the sound of trumpets rang out.
He climbed a few feet higher up the tree till he reached the very top of it.  He could hear the whole ensemble of a band playing in the distance and he chuckled softly.
“Sounds like another collection day for the poor eh Johnny me boy?”
“Yeah. Sweet charity. So, what’s the plan this time my friend?” Robin slid down the trunk to meet back with Little John and together he laid out the plan.
Just a few miles along a dirt road, the royal ensemble was walking through the forest.  The royal band played an up-tempo beat, walking behind them was the royal guard all dressed in their armor and holding their spears.
Some of the guards even carried a very large treasure chest which held the taxes throughout all of England.  Then shortly behind the guards was the royal coach of pure gold, and inside it was the vile, selfish, arrogant, man-child that was Prince John, the younger half-brother of the great King Richard.
An Irish bastard’s son.  Who claimed right to the throne of England after his mother who was Queen. He was inside his coach happily running his hands through all the gold he had collected from the people as he boastfully cheered.
“Taxes! Taxes! Beautiful, lovely taxes!”
“Sire. You have an absolutely skill for encouraging contributions from the poor.” His talking albino python that he had named Sir Heston. He had Heston ever since he found him as a egg abandoned in the woods.  With the help of some magic from the faes, Prince John gave his pet human intelligence and the ability to speak.  And once he gained the throne, he allowed his snake to be his right hand man.
“The coin a phrase, my dear advisor. Rob the poor to feed the rich. Am I right?” The two of them laughed.  “Now tell me, what is the next stop Sir Heston?” Prince John asked as he held the crown of England in his hands.  Heston slithered over to the map and he hummed with interest.
“Why, the next stop is Nottingham sire.”
“Oh! The richest plum of them all. Nottingham.” Heston held a large mirror in his coils and held it up as Prince John placed the crown on top of his head and admired himself in the mirror.  The crown slid off down his face as Sir Heston spoke out.
“A perfect fit sire. Most becoming. You look regal, dignified, sincere, masterful, noble. Chival……”
“Now, now don’t. Don’t overdo it Heston.” Prince John scolded as he adjusted the crown to make it fit upon his head. “There. That does it. This crown gives me a feeling of power! Power!”
“And how well King Richard’s crown sits on your noble brow.”
“Yes indeed I—ah King Richard?!” Prince John first started off before snarling by the end.  Heston gulped and was soon choked by his master as he proclaimed again “I told you to never mention my bastard of a brother’s name!”
“A mere slip of the forked tongue your majesty.” Heston apologized. “But remember we were in this plot together. After all it was your idea that I hypnotize him…..”
“Yes. And send him off on that ridiculous crusade. Ah-ha! Ah-ha!” Prince John laughed along.
“Much to the sorrow of the Queen Mother.”
“Yes! Mother.” Prince John sobbed. “Mother always did like Richard best.” He muttered angrily before proceeding to suck his thumb.
“Your highness, please don’t do that. If you don’t mind me saying so, it’s undignified for a King to suck his thumb.” Heston said to him. He then slithered up to Prince John and his eyes began to shimmer and glow as he said in a low hiss, “Hypnotism can rid of your psychosis….so…..easily…..” Prince John began to slowly relax but he quickly snapped out of it.
“None of that! None of that!” he shouted at his snake advisor.
“Well I was only trying to help.” Heston said annoyed.
“Help. Help indeed. Now, now one more stunt like that Heston, and you will be walking to Nottingham.”
“Snakes don’t walk they slither. So there.” Heston muttered angrily as he slithered back onto his tree-like pole and lay there pouting.
Racing through the woods putting on their disguises was Little John in the lead.  He wore a long blood red gypsy dress that revealed his shoulders.  Once he got into the dress, he took out a few rings and placed them on his finger as well some anklets, earrings, and he quickly tied a purple sash around his waist to finish off the look.
While behind him, Robin wore a long blue dress that was fit for an elderly woman and had a long black wig on.  He placed a couple of earrings on his ears and had a bandana tied to his head.
As the two of them stopped behind a tree, they saw the royal band coming in as well as the guards and the coach which held Prince John inside.
“Well this is a letdown. It’s only a circus. A peanut operation.”
“Peanuts? Why you dunce that’s the royal coach. It’s Prince John himself.” Robin snapped as his friend.
“Prince John. Alright you and her might be crazy enough to actually rob royalty but I am not having it. I’m gone!”
“What? And miss this chance to perform before royalty?” Robin said as he stepped in front of Little John. Quickly placing his hands over Little John’s fake breasts before backing off and doing a grand twirl of his blue dress.  Little John rolled his eyes as he sighed.
“Here he goes again.” They waited till the coach got closer before stepping out and waved their arms in the air trying to get the attention of the Prince.
“Oo-de-lally! Oo-de-lally! Fortune tellers!” Robin proclaimed masking his voice to sound like an elderly woman’s voice.
“Fortunes, forecasts, lucky charms!” Little John proclaimed making his voice go an octave higher to sound like a woman’s.
“Get the dose with your horoscope!” Robin called out again. Prince John pulled back the curtains hearing the proclamations of the two ‘women’.
“Fortune tellers, how exciting! Stop the coach.” He ordered the guards as the entire royal party stopped their marching.
“Sire, sire. They maybe bandits.” Sir Heston whispered to his master.
“Oh poppycock. Female bandits, what’s next? Rubbish.” Prince John scoffed.  He turned back to the two ladies who bowed before him and he said. “My dear ladies, you have my permission to kiss the royal hands. Whichever you like.” Both Robin and Little John stared wide-eyed once they saw the size of the jeweled rings that rested along the prince’s fingers.
“Hmm. Oh how gracious. And generous of you your majesty.” Robin said as he lowered his head to kiss the Prince’s left hand while sneaking off a ring from his tall finger.  Sir Heston who had seen the ring being taken whispered in Prince John’s ear.
“Sire! Did you see what…..”
“Stop! Stop hissing in my ear!” Prince John scolded as he rubbed his left ear.  Little John kissed right over the four rings on the prince’s right hand, secretly taking the jewels right off their encasement.  Heston began stammering in the Prince’s other ear which made the Prince proclaim and rub his other ear like he did his last one.
“Heston! You’ve hissed your last!” he took his python by the neck and slammed him into a basket before closing it and sitting on top of it. “Suspicious snake.” He hissed lowly.
“Masterfully done. Ehh your excellency. Now the fun can truly begin.” Robin tempted the Prince as he climbed into the coach with Prince John and closed the curtains.  He turned the lanterns down low and said to him, “Now close your eyes and concentrate.”
Prince John closed his eyes as Robin continued to tell him to close them tighter and not to peek.  He looked around the room until he found the pile of gold, he did a soft chuckle before chanting out.
“From the mists of time, I call forth ye spirits.” Outside the coach, Little John had a glass bowl tied to a string that was attached to a pole.
“Alright you little fireflies. Glow, glow.”
“We’re waiting!” Robin sung out.  That’s when Little John sent the bowl inside and he could hear Robin gasp. “Look sire! Look!”
When the prince opened his eyes, he saw three floating spirits within a crystal ball.  He was in pure awe as he said.
“Incredible. Floating spirits.” He went to touch the ball until he was slapped by Robin.  He chuckled a soft witchy cackle as he said.
“Naughty, naughty. You mustn’t touch young man.”
“Well how dare you strike the royal hand I—”
“Shh, shh, shh. You’ll break the spell just gaze into the crystal ball.” Robin took the ball with the fireflies and set it down on the table between him and the prince.  Robin then began chanting in an ancient Arabic tongue before letting out a gasp. “A face appears.”
The Prince immediately looks closer at the crystal ball intrigued.
“A crown sits on his noble brow.”
“A crown! Oo-de-lally how exciting!”
“His face is handsome, regal, majestic, loveable, a cuddly face.” From outside Little John heard all the comments Robin was laying on the Prince and could help but mime out a gag and roll his eyes.  Especially when the Prince began agreeing with everything that was said about him.
Robin then went for the treasure while the Prince was in his own head.  But as soon as he reached out his hand for the bag of gold, Heston who had found a weak spot on the basket poked his head out and actually struck out at Robin’s hand.
Biting his lip as he quickly retreated his hand to see it bleeding from the snake’s bite.  He let out a pained groaned which got the attention of the prince.
“Now what?” he asked impatiently.  Robin swallowed his pain and chuckled softly.
“I—I see your….illustrious name.”
“I know my name! Get on with it!” the Prince cried impatiently.
“Your name will go down, down, down in history of course!” Robin said as he struggled to take the bag of gold from Heston, who had it wrapped around his tail, but with a finally good tug, Robin managed to get the gold and send it towards Little John through the back curtains of the coach.
“Ahh! I knew it! I knew it! You hear that Heston!? Oh no you can’t he’s in the basket.” He then banged the side of the basket and said to his snake, “And-and-and don’t you forget it.”
Meanwhile outside, Little John slowly circled around the coach when he took notice of the solid gold hubcaps on the wheels of the coach.
“Hmm now that’s what I call pure gold hubcaps.” He looked around and stood in front of the back one and unscrewed it from the wheel and shoved it up the back of his dress.  He then moved over to the front on and did the same thing. “Oo-de-lally the jackpot.” He muttered softly as he eyed the royal treasure.
However it was completely surrounded and carried by guards.  Little John pondered for a bit but remembered a trick that he learned from a friend of his.
The one sure fire way to get a man’s attention away from their post.
He whistled out to the guards and when they turned and saw him, their mouths immediately dropped and their eyes widened.  He slowly and seductively untied the purple sash from his waist and began to do a seductive dance.
Shimming his shoulders and swaying his hips back and forth. Little John was light on his feet as he leaped and hopped about like a graceful deer.  He then skipped on over to the first guard who was just in awe.
Little John wrapped the purple sash around the guard’s neck pulling him in a little closer.  Close enough to kiss him.  But to tease him, he shoved the guard’s helmet over his face before retreating back and flaunted the guard, who was still hypnotized by Little John’s performance.
He twirled around before suddenly dropping down into a full split.  The guards now began to hoot and holler as they applauded, dropping the treasure. Little John then went up to another guard and took his spear out of his hands and jammed it into the ground.
With the grace of a deer, Little John then began to spin and slid down the spear’s long pole before ending with a pose with his right leg high in the air and he winked at the guards who were now applauding and whistling.
“Ohh stop it. Stop it you boys are too much.” Little John spoke his woman voice.
“That was the best show we have ever seen.” Said one of the guards.
“Well gentleman. It was my pleasure to dance for you. But of course every bit of contribution helps. For you see I—oh I just can’t say it.”
“What is it?” asked another guard.
“No it’s—it’s too painful to speak about.” The guards feeling sympathetic for this beautiful woman all started speaking up and telling ‘her’ that they wanted to hear her story. “Well…..I wasn’t always like this. My husband was beating me, cheating me, then left me all alone with no money. That’s when I—I forced myself to flee even without a cent to my name. That’s when I found Ms. Olga, the elderly gypsy woman I came with. But even then we—we hardly get by with enough food for you see…..I found myself pregnant at the time I left.”
These men were falling for the story hook, line and sinker. It was then one of the guards took the treasure chest and slid it over to Little John.
“Please, take it all.” Little John gave the young guard a surprised look and he said.
“Oh no I couldn’t possibly take all this.”
“Please. My—my mum had to raise me on her own when my father left her. For you and your baby.”
“Ohh you sweet thing.” He stroked the side of the guard’s cheek and Little John dragged the royal chest away from the guards.
As he came around the corner of the carriage, he felt someone bump into him which knocked him over the chest.  He turned around and saw Robin wearing Prince John’s royal cape and surrounded by a bunch of gold pieces that had fallen out of a bag that lay on the ground.
“Nice robes your majesty.” Little John teased, his normal accent finally coming out.
“And what of you, you vulgar young hussy. I heard all the wolf whistles and cheering. I could hardly keep the Prince under my hypnosis to swipe his clothes and gold.”
“Never mind that. Just gather the gold and then help me with this.” Robin and Little John then worked together to put as much gold pieces back in the bag as possible.  Robin stuffed the bag into his dress then both he and Little John picked up the chess and quickly raced off.
Prince John who had woken up from his dazed state, saw the two gypsy women running away from the scene, the elderly woman wearing his robes. He looked down and saw that he was in his undergarments.
“ROBBED! I’VE BEEN ROBBED! HESTON! YOU’RE NEVER AROUND WHEN I NEED YOU!!” Heston slithered out of the basket and raised half his body length up and looked the prince up and down. “I’ve been robbed.” He choked out as he covered himself up.
“Of course you’ve been robbed!” Heston hissed.  Far in the forest, Robin was gleefully chanting as he and Little John made their escape with the royal treasure.
“AFTER THEM YOU FOOLS!” Prince John proclaimed.  The guards now realizing they had been tricked, immediately took off running.  The carriage soon began to chase after Robin and Little John, unfortunately due to the missing hubcaps, the wheels began to pop off which made Prince John hop out of his carriage and fall straight into the mud.
Leaving him stranded in the middle of the forest trail alone with Heston.  He sobbed as he pounding the ground whining like a child.
“I knew it. I knew this would happen. I tried to tell you but no, no you wouldn’t listen. You just have to—” when Heston realized that he had angered the Prince, he began stammering as he tried to warn the prince as he now held a very large mirror, “Seven years bad…..” he then had the mirror smashed onto his head. “Luck. That’s what that is. Besides, you just broke your mother’s mirror.”
“Ahhh! Mummy!” Prince John whined as he began to suck his thumb once again.  He took it out of his mouth as he said solemnly, “I’ve got a dirty thumb.”

So, I’m taking part in the @goodthingshappenbingo and the first prompt I got done is the “Adopt a Pet” prompt.
The said fic is also part of @cutekittenlady Black Paladin Zarkon AU.  Hope you all enjoy this.
Title: New Pet
Rating: G
Pairings: Keith’s Dad/Krolia
Series: Voltron Legendary Defender
Summary:  Krolia and Kevin always planned to get Keith a pet, but neither expected it to be a cosmic space wolf.
Kevin wasn’t afraid, but his body couldn’t resist going stiff as the small puppy like creature silently watched him from the front porch.  Kevin frowned.  The creature was small, and appeared to be some kind of wolf or possibly a dog, but Kevin was certain that blue wasn’t a common colour for either animal.
The puppy remained still as Kevin approached and he steadily held out a hand.  Kevin was prepared to pull it back the second it showed off it’s fangs, but the puppy sniffed his hand and then contently leaned into it.
Kevin sighed in relief as he reached out to scratched an ear.
“At least you’re friendly,” Kevin asked as he knelt.  “Where did you come from little fella?”
The puppy tilted it’s head, and then suddenly zeroed in on Kevin’s shoes, and dove to chew on the leather laces.
Kevin laughed as he reached down to scoop up the puppy.  “Hey, my shoes aren’t a chew toy.”
“KOSMO!  Where did you go?!”
Kevin looked up as Keith opened the door.  The seven year old appeared panic stricken until he spotted the puppy in Kevin’s hands and his shoulders slumped.
“Oh good, Dad found you,” he muttered.
“More like he found me,” Kevin said as he stood up with the puppy still in his hands.  “Keith, what did your mother and I tell you about bringing animals homes?”
Keith’s love of animals was an endearing trait, but if the had his way their house would have been full of rabbits, birds and squirrels by now.
Keith frowned in way that always resembled Krolia.  “But Mom said we could.”
Kevin blinked.  “What?”
“Yeah, he’s my pet now,” Keith said as he reached out and took the puppy from Kevin’s arms.  “Also his name’s Kosmo.”
Kevin raised an eyebrow and he sensed Keith was leaving out some vital details since he left for work in the morning.
Thankfully, right then Krolia poked her head outside and spotted Kevin.
“Oh, you’re home early,” she said as she rubbed her neck sheepishly.
Kevin frowned.  He knew that look.  It rarely occurred, but he recognized Krolia’s guilt driven expression anywhere.
He showed a smile as he patted his son’s head.  “Yeah and Keith was telling me we have a new family member.”
Krolia sighed as she looked to their son.  “I thought I told you to keep him in your room until I spoke with your father.”
“I did,” Keith replied in a firm tone, “but he did his trick again and Dad found him first.”
Krolia sighed, but gave a smile as she gently pushed Keith back in the door.  “Why don’t you go see if Kosmo is hungry while your dad and I have a chat.”
Keith raised an eyebrow, but gave a nod as the puppy licked his chin.  The boy quietly shut the door, leaving Kevin and Krolia alone on the porch.
Kevin set down his work bag and then crossed his arms.  “Darling, happened to the plan of us getting him a hamster for his birthday?”
“It went out the window the second Kosmo locked eyes on Keith,” Krolia said as she sat on the step and gestured for him to join her.
Kevin compiled without question and kept silent as he waited for her to continue.
Krolia shut her eyes briefly before she turned back to Kevin.  “Remember the creature I discovered on an asteroid and brought it back to the Garrison?”
Kevin gave a slow baffled nod, until his brain put together her meaning.  His eyes widened as he pointed over his shoulder.  “Ya telling me that’s the space critter ya found?!”
Krolia nodded and Kevin was about to bolt as he planned to get Keith far away from the animal, until Krolia placed a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s not dangerous,” Krolia stated with no hesitation.  “The test results proved there aren’t any traces of viruses we could catch and Kosmo has yet to show any signs of aggression.”
Kevin relaxed, but still found himself glancing to the door.  “Ya sure?”
“Sam is certain, and you trust him, right?” Krolia said with a small smile.  “He concluded it’s no different from a wolf pup and he deemed it’s very likely it can be trained.  Although, truth be told we have been debating on what exactly we do with it now.”
“Oookay,” Kevin said as he leaned forward, “and ya decided Keith be the best trainer for it?”
“Kosmo is a ‘he’,” Krolia said and grimaced, “and that was hardly the plan.”  She massaged her forehead.  “I got dragged into a meeting with Kolivan, so Thace volunteered to keep an eye on Keith and we all thought he be curious about the pup.”
She leaned back and stared up at the sky.  “Keith only saw him from behind the window, and the puppy took a sudden interest in him.  He even went up to the window to paw at it and wagged his tail.”
At least the pup has good taste, Kevin thought as he nodded.
“According to Thace, the pup was very content to watch Keith until they began to walk away.”  Her eyes narrowed as she turned back to Kevin.  “The pup didn’t like this and then decided he had to follow.”
“So, the pup busted through the window?” Kevin asked.
The pup didn’t seem the strong, nor did it have any sign it got injured by cut glass.  However, maybe it was a fast healer.  He had heard about weirder abilities from other planets from Krolia.
“No,” Kroila said with a deep sigh, “he teleported.”
Kevin’s mind halted as he tilted his head.  “Teleported?”
“One moment he’s in the containment room,” Krolia as she moved her hands to demonstrate, “then there was a flash of light and he was suddenly standing in front of Keith and Thace.”
Kevin open and shut his mouth.  “So..it’s a teleporting space wolf?”
Krolia nodded.
“Ya didn’t know it could do that?” he asked in amazement.
“He has never done it before,” Krolia said as she tossed her hands up in the air.  “It’s possible he only developed the ability today, although Sam has a theory he’s always been able to do it but just didn’t have any motivation in doing so until he spotted Keith.”
“Alright,” Kevin said as he scratched his head.  “So, did ya try to put him back?”
Krolia gave an annoyed glared.  “We did, multiple times.”  She pinched the bridge of her nose.  “Yet, every time we lure the pup back inside he would instantly teleport back out to be with Keith.”
Kevin mulled this information over as he crossed his arms.  “And I’m guessing the Garrison doesn’t have anything to stop a teleporting animal?”
“Not currently,” Krolia said with a growl.  “Commander Shirogane then suggested Keith and I just take him home.  The other scientists were reluctant, but he pointed out there wasn’t much we could do to keep it there if it could just teleport away.”  She rubbed her arms.  “Well..except putting him down, but no one was thrilled with that idea.”
“Neither am I,” Kevin said grimly.
It was pointless and cruel to kill an animal that so far was harmless.  Since Krolia was the one that found the pup, he could never imagine she would be alright with that option.
“I wasn’t going to agree to it without discussing it with you,” Krolia said as she took his head, “but Keith was already attached to him, and I...didn’t have the heart to say no.”
Krolia blushed and Kevin had to resist to chuckled.  Krolia could be a real softie when it came to their kid.  Not to mention she was always adorable when she blushed.
“So, Keith named him ‘Kosmo’ and took him home,” Kevin concluded.
Krolia sighed.  “Actually, it had been Sam that named him that and we just agreed to keep it that way to avoid confusion.”  She looked around.  “Also, Sam agreed where we live would be the best place for a space wolf pup to grow since we’re not exactly surrounded by people.”
“He’s not wrong,” Kevin replied as he looked out into the desert.  “If the Garrison didn’t want a lot of prying eyes on the wolf pup, this is probably the best place for it.”
Krolia leaned against his shoulder and sighed.  “So, are you angry?”
Kevin shook his head.  “I’m surprised, and would have preferred a bit of warning, but naw.  Ya didn’t exactly have a lot of choice.”  He wrapped his arm around her.  “It’s probably good for Keith to have a dog like pet anyway.  He needs someone that can keep up with him when he’s rolling around in the dirt.”
Krolia chuckled as he rest her head against him.  “They’ve been running non-stop since we got home.”
“Has he?” Kevin said as he wiggled his eyebrows.  “Then, perhaps he’ll have an early bedtime tonight and we can get a little ‘alone time’.”
Krolia raised her head with an intrigued grin.  “Oh? And what exactly do you have in mind?”
Kevin gave a teasing smirk as he brought his lips towards Krolia’s.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light and Kevin grunted as he felt something land in his lap and felt a small tongue lick his face.
“Arrg, yuck,” Kevin said as he shoved off the creature and glared.  “I wasn’t planning on kissing you!”
Kosmo yipped as he wagged his tail.
“Mom, Dad,” Keith yelled, “Kosmo vanished again!”
“We have him,” Krolia called back as she shook her head.
Kevin continued to scowl as Kosmo tried to lick him again and wagged his tail.  “Ya better be at least house broken.”

Lotura Week Day 3! (SUPER LATE)
“Lotor!”
The Goddess’s voice boomed through the halls of the pantheon. Lotor quickly composed himself once more before the Goddess stormed in, not wishing her to see that she had managed to startle him.
 He gave a bow.
“Oh! Most radiant Goddess of Lions. To what do I owe this pleasure?”
“I have had enough of your games, Trickster!”
He returned to his usual posture, a look of faint distaste on his face.
“Well, that’s selling me a tad short, don’t you think? Trickster: yyes, but also God of Logic and Strategy. No mere Trickster am I.”
“I do not care about the other titles you hold, Trickster. For it is the Trickster that I would quarrel with.”
Her eyes were shifting to a shade of red. Lotor knew this was nothing to be allowed.
“Allura, please calm yourself. What is it that I have done to warrant your fury?”
“It is your constant scheming of late which infuriates me so. Your plans you refuse to explain! And you then have the audacity to put my nymphs at risk to do your work for you!”
Her eyes were continuing to darken.
“I knew they would be alright. Besides, they were the only ones capable of getting past the enchantments to get the-“
“And you are to explain your experiments while you’re at it! How DARE you experiment with the life forces of the living!?! It is a direct insult and disregard to me! I am tasked with keeping balance throughout the cosmos and tending to the lives of all who inhabit it! You tampering with them in such a manner is despicable!”
Lotor couldn’t keep from bristling slightly at this jab.
“You do not know of what you speak. Besides, you said it yourself: You are tasked with keeping the balance of the cosmos in check. You can sense when things are shifting out of alignment. So enlighten me: If the work I have been doing is to truly be considered a transgression and a disturbance of your precious balance, how is it that you were unable to sense it? Why is it that you only learned of my experiments by being told about them from one of your more troublesome priestesses?”
Swept up in her rage, Allura had not considered this. What he said was true. She was tapped into the entirety of the cosmos. If something was not following the path it should, she knew it. It was true that there were spells and the like that could cloud her vision, but none could obscure it completely. Besides, Lotor did not possess such power.
Her fury began to subside, her eyes returning to their usual shade of calm blue.
“Be that as it may, I still demand that you explain your actions. Though it may fall in line with keeping balance, the path your pursuing appears to be a dark one.”
“All will be explained in due time. For now, I must keep you in the dark about what I’m doing. Understand that it’s for the best. As I said, though: All will be revealed when the timing is right.”
She held his gaze, not at all satisfied with this response. She knew he would not budge on the issue now, though. Lotor extended a hand to her.
“Allura… Darling… Please. I need you to trust me. I know how this all must look…”
She couldn’t help but soften at the sad and sincere look upon his face. His ears were even drooping . She offered a gentle smile, taking his hand in her own.
She placed a kiss to his lips once she was close enough, catching him by surprise.
“You… You aren’t mad at me?”
 She shook her head lightly.
“I told you. My quarrel was with the Trickster. Not my husband.”
Lotor’s expression softened as well, his perking back up as he leaned in to return the kiss.
(I had thought about incorporating them into existing mythology, but I decided to just sort of twist the events of the actual show into a slightly more mythical form. Yes, the paladins got turned into nymphs. I’m sorry that this is SOOOO late, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. I feel kinda rushed right now because life, but I hope it is still at least enjoyable for y’all to read)
(prompt: I was really only able to incorporate the Mythology AU prompt into this one)

Bequeathed - A Birthday Fic for Lance

Full fic below the cut.
Alanci grinned excitedly, laughing as a strong hand ushered him along. He fidgeted giddily with the ends of the blindfold that was tight firmly over his eyes. He heard his ‘captor’, who he knew to be Blaytz from the moment the other entered Alanci’s room at bedtime, chuckling to himself as they made their way dow what Alanci assumed was a hallway. He heard a door slide open and was quickly lead through it, the gears whirring and locks clicking as it sealed them away. Unable to help himself, Alanci spoke.
“Blaytz, can I take the blindfold off now, or is this part of the game~?”
A small chorus of laughter met his joke, and Alanci broke into a bright smile. Blaytz kissed the Altean’s cheek and removed the blindfold, wrapping his arms around the young man. Before them stood Alfor, who was standing next to a table that bore 3 holograms, one of Zarkon, one of Trigel, and one of Gyrgan, from left to right, all three smiling lovingly at Alanci as their laughter tapered off. Blaytz guided the young man into a chair set before the holograms, taking up a position on the opposite side from Alfor as the king reached out and ruffled Alanci’s hair. Each of the paladins spoke in turn.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make it for you birthday, Alanci. We’ve hit an unexpected snag in our research and I couldn’t leave,” Zarkon began.
“And I had meant to be there as well. But two of the colonies of the Belt are becoming restless and wish to reinstate their long held feud,” Trigel continued.
“Please forgive me as well. Another city has been destroyed by earthquakes, and they needed me to help rebuild,” Grygan finished.
Alanci smiled and shook his head, laughing softly.
“You’re all here now, even if it can’t be in person. This is more than my birthdays before I met the five of you, and it satisfies me just as well as having you here.”
Blaytz and Alfor shared a grin before the latter spoke.
“I told you all that Alanci wouldn’t be disappointed. Now, are you all ready?”
The holograms all nodded, and Blaytz picked up a box from the table, holding it out to Alanci. The Altean took it excitedly, drawing in a breath as he looked it over. The parcel was wrapped in pure white paper and tied off with a blue and gold bow. Alanci wasted no time opening it, tears springing to his eyes as he saw what lay inside.
The others watched quietly as their lover took out the silver chain within, his delicate fingers tracing the stones perfectly set into their fixtures. A Nalquodian sapphire and Rygnirathian topaz sat proudly beside the Altean ruby and Dalterion emerald that flanked a perfect black diamond that Diabazaal was famous for. Alanci held his breath, tears welling in his eyes and spilling down his cheeks. Alfor knelt before him, gently wiping away the tears as they fell.
“None of that, now. This is supposed to be a happy gift, darling. A token of our love for you,” he said softly.
Blaytz set a gentle, warm hand on the young Altean’s back, stroking small circles through his shirt. Alfor gently took the necklace from his love’s hands, fastening it about his neck and giving him a loving kiss.
“A token so that, no matter what the future may bring, you will never forget the love that you have shared with each of the five of us. A love that has made us the luckiest beings in this entire universe. And so that you might think of each of us even when we are apar,.” he murmured, taking care to be loud enough so the others could hear him as well.
Alanci smiled softly, his lips trembling as he spoke, his hands took hold of one Alfor’s and one of Blaytz, his eyes settling on each of them before he looked to the holograms.
“There is nothing in this universe that could make me forget how much I love you all. And nothing that could keep me from thinking of any of you, especially when we can’t be near each other. Please, believe me when I say that this is the best birthday you all have ever given me,” Alanci reassured.
Blaytz gave the young Altean a drink, and the six continued their small party, locked away from the world for those brief moments, laughing and telling one another of their adventures since they’d been apart. When Blaytz finally walked Alanci back to bed, the young man was awash with joy, his hands finding themselves at the new necklace again and again. Alanci knew then that he would never remove it, and that only death could keep him from loving the ones who had gifted it to him, the five paladins that held the key of his heart.

» Make Me Your Home by Reader115
“Oh my god, Keeeith,” Lance wheezed. “Keith you’re the best drunk space cadet I’ve ever seen.”
» only fools fall for you by 221bdisneystreet

In which Lance just wanted to take photographs and the sky decided it wasn't going to happen so he runs into the broganes flower shop.
» raindrops on roses by viscrael
He wonders if the rest of the paladins think that way. If they struggle with everyday tasks, if they feel the call of adrenaline again sometimes, if they wake up some mornings antsy and trying to itch a scratch that they can’t touch any more.
» So Very Lucky by Reader115
After hitting it off with Keith at an end-of-summer party last year, Lance was left disappointed when Keith didn’t keep in touch with him. And his excitement over seeing Keith once again the following summer as a fellow camp counselor is dampened immediately by the fact that Keith doesn't seem to remember him at all.
» Soulmate Line by geewillikers
How can Lance explain who Keith's soulmate is when their lines connect, and yet they're total strangers to one another?

» The Gambler by yellowskies
"And then he saw it. The string. Tugging at his pinkie, it led directly from his finger to Lance's."
» The Northern Crown by Athenias
Even if his new talent made Allura groan whenever she had the pleasure of overhearing his pick-up lines and got him beat up by more than one of his own soldiers, it was enough to make a Galra general by the name of Keith fall in love with him.
» the meaning of donuts by Katranga

Chapter 11: Isometric
An epilogue of sorts Also a chapter told entirely in Matt’s POV cuz I love him
The liberation of Vallen was over before the castle even landed. And while Shiro and the princess—Allura, Katie said her name was?—spoke with the prisoners there, Matt and his father had been pressured into the infirmary. Katie had gone on about what she called a ‘healing pod’, insisting that they both needed to spend time in one. After weak protests, Katie had won, and the strange mustached man had helped each of them into a white bodysuit.
The last thing Matt saw before succumbing to the cold and to the sleep was Katie’s face, smiling happier than he’d seen her in ages. “I’ll be right here when you wake up,” she’d told them. “I promise.”
Then his eyes had closed.
Hours later, the cold air receded and he woke up as the pod opened.
The room was dark and still. Faint mechanical hums stood out in the quiet, and the only light came from the pale blue glow of the healing pods. Next to his own, his father rested peacefully.
He stumbled, disoriented, taking in the room around him.
Katie lay curled up on the floor. She wasn’t in her armor, instead wearing a baggy green-and-white shirt and a pair of gray cargo shorts. A laptop lay beside her, long since powered down, and one of her hands rested lightly on the keyboard.
Matt smiled, sitting down beside her. “Hey there, sis,” he murmured. He pushed the laptop away, closing it firmly. He took her hand in his, drinking in how peaceful she looked.
Safe. He reveled in the fact. We’re safe. She’s actually here.
“You’re awake.”
Matt looked up, glancing towards the doorway. A figure stood there—a teenage boy. He was wearing all black, and his dark hair hung loosely around his face. In his hands he carried a pillow and a large blanket.
Matt tried to remember his name, but he’d never seen any of the other paladins out of their armor. “Hi.”
“We weren’t expecting you to wake up yet,” the paladin (was this the red one?) continued, walking over. “Estimates said you still had a few more hours.” He knelt beside Katie, setting down the blanket. “She’ll be sorry she missed you.”
Matt relaxed, smiling. “I’ll still be here when she wakes up,” he murmured.
“She tends to do this a lot,” the paladin told him. “She’ll stay awake for as long as she can…and then she’ll just crash and fall asleep wherever she happens to be.” He gently lifted her head, slipping the pillow beneath. “We’ve all sorta gotten into the habit of finding wherever she’s passed out and then carrying her back to her room. But tonight…I thought she’d rather stay here with you.” He shook out the blanket, spreading out over Katie. He paused, glancing at Matt suddenly. “Do you, uh, do you want me to get you another blanket or something…?”
Matt laughed. “Thank you, but I’m okay.”
The paladin only nodded, seemly unsure of what to say next. “I, uh….”
“I’m sorry,” Matt said, shaking his head. “I don’t think we were properly introduced.” He held out his hand to the paladin. “I’m Matt. Matt Holt.”
“Keith Kogane,” he replied, shaking Matt’s hand.
Matt paused, furrowing his eyebrows. “Wait…Shiro’s little brother?”
Keith froze. “I…brother?”
“Yeah; you were at the Garrison, weren’t you?” Seeing Keith’s wide-eyed and flustered look, Matt nearly laughed. “Dude, he practically adopted you. So you may not be related by blood. Whatever. You’re still brothers.”
“No, no, I get that,” Keith hastened to assure him. “I just…didn’t realize he talked about me.”
Matt laughed. “Shiro and I were roommates, back at the Garrison,” he said with a smile. “He’s my best friend. Of course he told me about you.”
They settled into comfortable silence, sitting on either side of Katie, watching the stars go by through the window. Katie shifted in her sleep, burying herself deeper into her pillow, mumbling something about peanut butter and someone called Kaltenecker.
Matt chuckled, watching her fondly. “I’m glad she’s getting some rest.”
“Yeah, I think you can speak for all of us there,” Keith muttered. “She hasn’t really been sleeping well lately.”
Matt furrowed his brow. “Is…she okay?”
Keith exhaled, long and slow. “She’ll be fine,” he said eventually. “It’s just been rough, these past few weeks.” Matt was silent, and Keith took that as a signal to keep going. “She just wasn’t in the best place when we found her,” he continued. “She told us about what happened. We headed straight there…but you were already gone. After that, well, she was angry. At the Galra. At Zarkon. But mostly, I think, at herself.”
“Thank you for being there for her.”
Keith seemed a bit taken aback for a moment, but he quickly relaxed. “Of course. She…really means a lot to me.” He pulled his legs up against his chest, resting his chin on his knees. “I never really had much of a family back on Earth,” he confessed. “Team Voltron is about as close to family as I’ve got.”
Matt quirked a lopsided grin. “Well, any family of Katie’s is family of mine. So, in that case, welcome to the family.”
Keith let out a laugh, but he seemed a bit tense, uneasy about something.
Matt’s smile faded, and he looked at him curiously. “Can I ask you something?”
Keith looked at him askance. “Yeah, go ahead.”
“Back on the ship, with Reggar,” Matt started, “Katie…she called you Galra.” Keith froze. “But you don’t look Galra,” Matt continued. “And you’re from Earth. Right?”
Keith sighed. “I don’t even know the full story, to be honest,” he said. “But to answer your question…yes. I’m part Galra. I don’t know how much, but….” He cast his gaze downwards. “I only found out recently. I’m still coming to terms with it myself.” He seemed to be bracing himself for the worst, closing his eyes, hugging himself. “If…if that makes you uncomfortable, I understand,” he whispered.
Matt’s eyes widened and he shook his head quickly. “No! No way.” Keith looked up at him in shock, and Matt cautiously reached out to put a hand on his shoulder. “Dude. You saved my life. You saved my baby sister’s life. I trust you.”
Keith melted. The look in his eyes was filled with such surprise, such compassion, such adoration. Then he smiled.
Well, Matt thought wryly. I guess I’ve got a brother now. But he found he didn’t mind the thought. Welcomed it, really.
Between them, Katie shifted again. “Would you nerds just cut it out already and go to sleep?”
Keith snorted, and Matt struggled to hold back his own laughter. “Sorry, Katie.” He glanced over at Keith. “You wanna just, like, crash here for the night?”
“In…the infirmary?”
Matt was already lying down, yawning. “Mm. Always liked slumber parties.”
Keith laughed. “I’ll go get some more blankets.”
The rest of the team had come to join them within the next few hours. Hunk had procured what tasted like the alien equivalent of hot chocolate, and Lance accused them of having a slumber party without them; but the two of them joined Matt, Keith, and Katie in their impromptu blanket fort, passing out mugs of the hot cocoa. Shiro had come into the infirmary not too much later, and, at the insistence of Matt and Katie, had sat down to join them. When Allura and Coran had entered, it was to the sight of their five paladins along with Matt all swaddled in blankets and contently drinking hot chocolate. “It’s a very important and common Earth ritual for unwinding after stressful events,” Katie told them, to which the rest of them dutifully nodded. And when Sam woke up, they had another blanket and steaming mug waiting for him.
Both Matt and his sister wrapped their arms around him, and the three of them embraced. “Hi, Dad,” Katie squeaked through her tears.
“Oh my little girl,” he whispered. “Katie, darling, I am so proud of you.”
As he pulled away from the hug, his eyes fell on Shiro, standing nearby with a soft smile. Shiro reached out to shake his hand. “It’s good to see you, Commander.”
Sam chuckled, completely forgoing the handshake to instead pull him into a hug. “How many times do I have to tell you this, Shiro? Please. Call me Sam.”
Shiro let out a laugh, reciprocating the hug. “Yes, sir.”
“Takashi.”
“Come on, I need to introduce you to everyone!” Katie bubbled, taking her father by the arm. “You met Lance and Keith earlier,” she said, gesturing to the group of boys, “and this is Hunk—”
“Doctor Holt, it is such an honor to finally meet you,” Hunk gushed, shaking his hand enthusiastically. “I’ve read all your books. Going Beyond Terrestrial Engineering is what inspired me to enroll at the Garrison.”
Sam laughed good-naturedly. “I’m glad to hear that!”
Katie’s eyes were comically wide, and she had both her hands pressed to her mouth, doing nothing to smother the massive smile on her face. “Hunk!!” she squealed. “You didn’t tell me you were a fan!!!”
Hunk’s flushed, his expression morphing into one of embarrassment. “I—”
“Dude,” Lance interjected. “I had a poster of Shiro on my wall. No one’s gonna judge you.”
Matt nearly choked on his drink. “You what?”
“Alright,” Shiro said firmly. “Enough of that.”
Sam laughed again. “It’s good to meet all of you,” he said. “Hunk, I would love to speak with you further on your studies.”
Hunk’s eyes were sparkling. “I—yes, wow, thank you!”
Sam turned towards the other two in the room, the Alteans, and he held out a hand to them. “And you must be Allura and Coran?”
Allura was wiping at her eyes, trying to compose herself. She clasped his hand firmly. “Welcome aboard the Castle of Lions,” she said. “We are all very happy to have you here with us.”
“Absolutely,” Coran agreed. “Number Five has told us a lot about you. And it’s always exciting meeting new humans!”
Out of nowhere, Katie’s eyes widened, and she gasped. “Oh my god, Matt, I almost forgot! I’ll be right back.” Without another word, she took off.
When she returned a couple minutes later, she was carefully cradling something in her hands. “Um, these are yours,” she told Matt, holding out her hands towards him. “I’ve been holding onto them for you.”
He glanced down, surprised. “My glasses?”
She nodded, almost sheepishly. “They were part of my disguise when I was sneaking into the Garrison,” she confessed, “and so I sorta brought them out here with me. For when we found you.”
He took the glasses almost reverently. “Katie, I—” His voice cracked. “Thank you.”
“Oh, hey,” Lance said suddenly. “That actually reminds me. Pidge?”
Katie turned towards him. “Yeah?”
“I know I’ve asked this before,” he began, “and you said Pidge was fine…but do you want us to start calling you Katie? Now that, you know, they’re here?”
She paused, then smiled. “I like being Pidge,” she told him. “I’ve gotten pretty used to it.”
Matt frowned, taking that it. He glanced at her curiously. “Do…do you want us to call you Pidge too?”
For a moment, she seemed taken aback. “I—I don’t know,” she fretted. “I mean. You can call me whatever? I guess? Either is fine. Katie’s fine. I mean, I haven’t been Katie in so long, it’s kinda nice, ya know? But I don’t want anyone to get confused or anything. And you don’t have to go out of your way to try to use a different name if you don’t really want to—”
Sam put a hand on her back, and she paused in her rambling. “Alright,” he said gently. “Katie. Pidge. You’re fine.”
She breathed deeply, relaxing into his touch. “Thanks, Dad.”
“While this has been a nice respite,” the princess said, “we really must get focused back on the main plan here.”
“The princess is right,” Shiro agreed. “We have a lot of work to do.”
Lance sighed. “Yes, sir, Space Dad.”
Matt frowned. “Right away?”
“That’s the life of a Voltron paladin,” his sister said with a shrug. “We do not get a break.”
“There is still some time before we reach our next position,” Coran said. “We need to get the  castle to a point about equidistant from Olkarion, the Balmera, Beta Traz, the weblum…. It will take a bit for us to get there.”
Shiro furrowed his brow. “Can’t we do a wormhole jump?”
“Ah, we could,” Coran replied. “But it’d be best for Allura to save her energy. We’ll need that for later.”
“So what I’m getting here,” Hunk said slowly, “is that we do get a break?”
Allura sighed. “For a little while longer, I suppose. But please, be ready to go once the castle is in position.”
Lance was grinning, nearly bouncing up and down on his toes. “You got it, Allura! Alright, I wanna try to figure out that Altean pool. I’ll catch you guys later!” Before anyone could say anything, he took off.
“In the meantime,” Allura continued, glancing towards Matt and his father. “We should get the two of you a change of clothing. And would you like a tour of the castle?”
It was later when Matt went looking for his sister. He wandered the castle aimlessly, remembering what he could from the tour Allura had given them. Afterwards, she and Coran had headed to the bridge; the rest of the team had splintered off throughout the tour, mentioning other preparations they needed to do before they went on for their next mission.
When there was no answer at the door to Katie’s—Pidge’s—room, he frowned. This was correct, wasn’t it? He double-checked, seeing the telltale green light on the panel by the door, and nodded to himself. Yes, this was her room. So where was she?
He wandered a bit further down the hall, knocking on the next door he saw. A “Come in!” came from inside, and so Matt slid the door open. Lance turned to face him, pulling his shirt on. “Oh, hey, man.”
“Have you seen my sister?”
Lance frowned. “Did you try her room?”
“She wasn’t there.”
His eyebrows furrowed. “Huh.” He left the room, coming to stand beside Matt in the hallway, clapping him on the shoulder. “Alright, she shouldn’t be too hard to find. Then again, knowing her, she could be asleep in a vent or something.”
He started wandering down the hall, and Matt paused, staring after him. “She what?”
“She falls asleep in the weirdest places,” Lance called, not even bothering to turn around. “If I find her, I’ll tell her you’re looking for her.”
Matt sighed. “Thanks.” He turned, heading in the other direction. After a while, he found himself back in another section of the castle he recognized. Wasn’t this near where he’d woken up? Yes, he was pretty sure that the cryo-pod chamber was that door at the end of the hall—
There were voices coming from one of the open doors ahead.
“We’ll need to take off your shirt so I can take care of this properly. Is that okay?”
“Yeah. I’ve got my binder on.”
He paused. Wasn’t that her voice? And…Keith? Matt poked his head through the doorway to check it out.
Pidge sat on what looked like an examination table from the doctor’s office. Her green-and-white shirt was lying beside her, leaving her in a strapless top of some kind––a chest binder, she’d said?
Keith was perched next to her, holding her arm in one hand and some kind of jar in the other. He was gently spreading a layer of salve over her left shoulder. “You shouldn’t have kept this to yourself.”
“It’s fine,” she insisted. “Barely feel it.”
Keith’s hand rubbed a bit closer to the red mark on her shoulder, and she flinched. He stilled, glancing at her and raising an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”
“Shut up.”
He sighed, setting down the jar of healing salve and picking up a roll of bandages.
In the doorway, Matt stood watching in shock. “What happened?”
Pidge turned to him in surprise. “Matt!”
“Are you okay?!”
She let out a groan. “I’m fine!”
Keith rolled his eyes. “Keep telling yourself that,” he muttered. He held up the bandages. “Now hold still.”
She kept her eyes downcast as Keith carefully wrapped the bandages around her shoulder, stubbornly refusing to meet the frantic eyes of her brother.
“Katie,” he pleaded.
She broke.
“It’s nothing to worry about,” she insisted quietly. “I don’t need a healing pod or anything. I had my armor on. And even then, it just grazed me.” She glared at her clenched hands. “Stupid Galra and their stupid laser guns.”
Matt sighed.
“Alright,” Keith announced as he finished. “We’ll need to replace the bandages periodically. Find me tomorrow morning and we can take care of that.”
She nodded, rotating her shoulder experimentally. “Thanks, Keith.”
He just smiled and ruffled her hair. “Next time, maybe tell someone when you get shot,” he admonished, standing up.
“Yeah, yeah, responsibility and stuff.”
He sighed, shaking his head. He clapped Matt on the shoulder on his way out. “Don’t let her over-exert herself,” he instructed Matt as he headed into the hall.
“I heard that!” Pidge called.
“Good.”
He wandered off, leaving Matt and his sister alone.
Pidge tugged her shirt back on sullenly, wincing a bit as she flexed her shoulder.
Matt was silent for a minute. When he finally spoke, he simply stated, “You got shot.”
She sighed. “I really am fine,” she assured him. “It’s nothing major.”
“Nothing major?” Matt repeated, flabbergasted. “It—you—,” he sputtered. “Katie!”
Pidge smiled wryly. “You know, that’s the same thing Lance said when I got back to the castle and he found out I’d fractured a rib.”
“KATIE!”
She winced. “Sorry. But that’s all taken care of. See? I’m all better now.”
“Except for the burn on your shoulder.”
She closed her eyes in defeat. “Yeah. ‘Cept for that.”
“Why didn’t you mention something earlier?” he asked, sitting down next to her.
“I didn’t want to worry you.”
“Katie, I’m your brother. It’s my job to worry about you.”
“That’s just the thing!” she exclaimed. She paused, exhaling heavily. “When I left Serva, it was only a few hours before they all picked me up,” she murmured. “I managed to get a strong enough signal out and they found me pretty much right away. And after I told them all what happened….” She broke off. She pulled up her legs and hugged them to her chest, resting her chin on her knees. “By the time we got back to Serva, you were already gone,” she murmured. “And we didn’t know where you were, or how to find you. We didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to do.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “And it’s like everyone was trying to fill that hole. For days. They were just…always there. Asking if I was okay, if I needed anything, if I wanted company.” Her voice was rising in pitch, frantic. “And…on the one hand, it’s really nice. To know that they care about me like that. I mean, we’re a team, and we’re supposed to support each other. But it kinda goes deeper than that too.” She rested her forehead on her knees, burying her face. “But on the other hand…it’s suffocating.” She paused to take a breath, and sighed. “What I’m getting at here, is that I’m not fragile. I’m not gonna break. I can take care of myself.”
“I know.”
“I mean, Shiro was always like an overprotective mom. But the rest of them? Since when does Keith have feelings?!”
Matt laughed, thinking back on his conversation with the Red Paladin the night before. “Yeah, well, that’s what it’s like when your family gets hurt. And you told me yourself: they’re like family.”
“Yeah,” she whispered. “I guess so.”
They fell into silence.
“So…,” Matt mused. “Shiro mentioned you have another mission coming up.”
“Yep.” She made a popping sound with the ‘p’. “Beta Traz.”
“What’s that exactly?”
“High security space prison. Built specifically to contain one prisoner. We need to break in there and get him out.”
He nudged her playfully. “Is that all you guys do? Prison breaks?”
She huffed. “Feels like it sometimes,” she told him. “Jailbreaks and liberating planets.”
He paused, thinking. She was fourteen. And already, she was facing things that no one should ever have to. She was a child soldier conscripted into an intergalactic war that had been raging for thousands of years.
“So you’re going into combat,” he said softly. “Are you sure you’re gonna be okay? I mean. With your injured shoulder?”
“I’ll be fine,” she promised him. “Lance and Shiro will be there.”
“Mm.”
That’s another thing—the rest of the paladins weren’t too much older than her. Shiro was really the only adult. How old were the other three? Seventeen?
Pidge was watching him curiously, and after a moment, she reached out to take him by the hands. “Hey, Matt? I know that the stuff I do can get scary,” she murmured. “It gets dangerous. I’ve…I’ve had a lot of close calls. But also, at the same time, this is the most incredible experience I’ve ever had.” She sighed. “I know you’re always gonna worry about me. Cuz we’re family. But just keep in mind,” she instructed, a smile starting to tug at the corner of her lips. “I’m gonna do some insane stuff and you’re probably gonna freak out. But just know that I’ve already done a whole lot of insane dangerous stuff; I know what I’m doing.”
“That’s really not making me feel any better.”
She laughed, and the tension started to ease.
“The thing is,” she added after a moment, her smile falling. “Things are gonna get real crazy, real fast. I mean, we’ve got Beta Traz to deal with now. But it’s only gonna get crazier after that.”
His brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“We have…a very extensive plan. Beta Traz is only one step.”
“So what happens next?”
She took a deep breath, looking him in the eye. “We find Zarkon,” she said. “And we take him out.”
Many thanks to all my readers for coming along on this crazy adventure!!!
And a HUGE Thank You to my wonderful beta @kabber!!! Seifert, my dear, I don’t know what I’d do without you. Love you!! Thanks for putting up with me and my constant rambles.

ok so a bt van turned up today somehow (which is genuinely a shock bc usually it takes like. a week. for them to do that normally bc bt is shit tier) and fixed the fault afaik and suddenly my internet speed’s double now? i’m sure that’s going to drop soon like always but for now i’ll take advantage and watch two episodes!!!
apologies to mobile readers if readmores don’t work, it’s p. long.
episode 3:
ok keith stop and think. you have a tracker. you said so yourself. you can track him anywhere, anytime and you’re good until the ship pulls up at the space garage and someone spots the blinky light and says illegal space ship mods void the insurance (and zethrid finds the list of legal space ship mods and that’s how the lotor crew ship ends up with space steer horns and fire decals)
“flying the castle for half my life” so she flew it before the war then? or has there been some SERIOUS offscreen time compression since the start? in which case the paladins should’ve all aged too.
she’s so CONCERNED FOR HER BOSS. like they’re really stressing that this team genuinely cares for him and each other so like i can only assume they’re all going to die horribly and he’s going to be like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  to prove what a #Bastard he is (or like all but one will bite it and the survivor will ally with the paladins somehow), or like zarkon will come back and say ‘kill them to prove your loyalty to the empire’ or whatever and he genuinely cares about them in return doesn’t and that’s when he sets off a galran civil war between galra traditionalists and the new lotor regime.
if yugioh has taught me anything it’s to never assume that your opponent is being stupid when they play a single card in attack mode and nothing else in their first turn it’s ALWAYS gonna be a trap.
yyyyeah this isn’t going well. i know why (and i also know that keith can do better (see the first episode where he p. much singlehandedly escapes from the science folks who captured shiro) and will do better) but that doesn’t make it any easier to watch.
“doesn’t live up the legend” lotor i swear to god.
hmm so nobody on the galra side of things knows that shiro is gone then? like i figure lotor would be able to access literally any info he wanted at this point on voltron so if they knew shiro was missing so would he. unless the galra literally did no opposition research at all on the paladins of voltron at all (which isn’t a surprise because zarkon is a moron). which another reason i think lotor maybe put himself out there as a target too soon?? like think about how much fucking damage he could do if he knew everything about them.
silent hill planet is eerie. oh god silent hill au would be scary
FORM A CIRCLE AROUND ALLURA SO SHE DOESN’T LOSE YOU
GOOD JOB HUNK GO GET HER
FINALLY fuck took long enough.
zethrid ♥
i wonder who gets to come up with the fantasy element names and what they do sounds like a fun job
god i am so ready for a hunk season. give me hunk’s backstory!!! give us more hunk!!! where he’s not just a fat joke!!!
oh fuck no allura vs lotor
oh god keith ;A;
i’ll give you this one, lance redeemed, gj getting him back on track and not letting him sink and especially for not deciding to take a potshot.
so i guess there’s no way to hack into the communication lines between the lions and the castle and even failed transmissions are undetectable by the galra ships own radar. good to know.
i cant believe she flirted with the blue lion
oh ffs i think i might be the blue lion. she doesn’t respond to allura until she’s open and honest about her vulnerabilities and that’s exactly how i am with lance.
oooh batbot i wonder if that’s a standard feature or blue exclusive
HAHA GET FUCKED LOTOR
“oh hunk” - 4
keith an onscreen apology to allura and the others would be Nice
no new animation for voltron either pfff.
so the galra don’t even have voltron’s energy signature on record as a ‘if you pick up this fucking RUN GO GO GO’... zarkon....
“I’M A LEG!” ALLURA YOU PRECIOUS DARLING
(voltron itself still looks so incredibly lame though i don’t think i’ll ever find it as cool as the show wants me to find it)
episode 4:
allura oh no that’s not a happy face.
OH NO CORAN
DON’T DO THIS TO THEM SHOW DON’T
stay away from that quintessence stuff i think it fucks with your mind
so voltron’s from a different universe?
WHAT DID WE LEARN LAST EPISO-oh thank god they’re going with her
no no NO DON’T LEAVE CORAN ALONE
ok they could be alteans. but they could also be xenomorphs, or predators, or deoxys or a hyper-intelligent mechanically augmented raptor and her babies or whatever fucked up the crew in event horizon.
god that’s eerie, same hunk
THAT’S A SKULL, THAT’S A DEAD BODY ON SCREEN
slav???
SHIRO??????
what in the heckle hackle
oh!! it’s an ‘all AUs are canon’ episode!!! i like those.
“stay back altean” uh oh i feel like this isn’t a nice AU.
those altean bots move an awful lot like galra bots.
empress????
so is empress allura dead? she talks like she is and i don’t think she’d sound so much like she’s mourning her death if they’d just never met in person. 10000 years ago is one hell of a legacy to still be remembered with such devotion and i don’t think the alteans are the type to live that long. like they’re probably space elves and long lived but they’re not immortal afaik.
how many pilots did you send lotor?
so voltron’s from this universe or - oh trans-reality. so the base ore technically doesn’t exist in any dimension it just floats around in netherspace until it feels like popping into a universe. cool.
holy fuck they’re mindslaves.
“in allura’s day” so empress allura is definitely dead.
“they’re not slaves because they don’t have will. slaves are always trying to escape or revolt” hooooooooly shit
this episode is so fucking cruel to allura as interesting as the worldbuilding is i hate it.
guns of gamara? i think? neat.
like honestly my one comfort so far is that i don’t think the allura of this universe would’ve signed off on all this. i really don’t. i think her death catalyzed altean extremism performed in her name, but i don’t think she would’ve ever been okay with this. she’s fundamentally a good person.
hahahaha i want her to go head to head with azeroth’s old gods and the void lords bring the whole order vs chaos thing to a head. let’s see how far your desire for order and your slave machines can take you against yogg’saron (oh i can see the curse of flesh messing with those ‘noncog’ machines) or n’zoth.
i love slav have i mentioned that?
oooh a whip has she used that before or is it from her lion idk. i know that’s a traditional girl’s weapon but it’s nice to see her fighting hand to hand again.
SVEN NO
GET HIM TO SPACE ER
this episode is an existential nightmare tho another one of those comets could enter that reality or an even worse reality and they just might make their own voltron and then everything will go to shit and it could happen ANY TIME
IF YOU GUYS DON’T HUG CORAN WHEN YOU GET BACK.....
LOTOR YOU FUCK
it’ll be about as powerful as voltron until y’all learn something new about yourselves and then you’ll kick its ass don’t worry. it will probably always look cooler though.

Voltron fanfic: “Scattered” Chapter 17
Season 2 AU. No ships, K+ to T rating. Begin at the beginning here.
Got another rec, especially for those who like their Voltron stories without any romance and with plenty of Pidge. Check out “Though She Be But Little” by TheRedScreech over on FF-Net for a delightful series of roughly-connected Pidge-centric stories!

The moment they entered the bridge, Lance shouted at Coran and Matt, who were bent over Coran’s control panel. “Allura said we can contact our families! How do we do that?”
Coran looked at Matt. “Do you remember what to do?”
Matt grinned. “Yes, sir!”
“Lance, go to your station. Matt will help you.”
Coran turned to Hunk. “How about you, Number Two?”
“What? I can talk to my mom?”
“Yes, we can initiate both links at the same time.” Coran walked over to Hunk’s station and pulled up his comm panel. “Do you have a number for reaching your mother’s communication device?”
“Oh, quiznak.” Hunk concentrated, trying to remember the number that he had programmed into his phone years ago and promptly forgotten. The phone that he had left sitting on the nightstand of his room at the Garrison because Lance was in such a hurry to sneak out that night. He had the entire periodic table at his mental fingertips, but couldn’t remember his mom’s number. “Does it have to be a number? We can do vid calls with email addresses.”
“Hold on a tic… I need to access Number Five’s alphabet converter…There! Enter your information here.”
Hunk did so. On the other side of the bridge he could hear Lance going a mile a minute in Spanish. And then a video screen popped up on his panel, showing a round, dark face with graying hair.
“Tinā? It’s me…”
“Tsuyoshi? Lo’u atali’i?’ The woman looked away from the screen and screamed, “Nani! Nani!”
In the background, another woman responded, “What is it, Iolana?”
Hunk felt the tiniest bit of queasiness as the screen he was watching moved and spun, showing him his aunt. Her face lit up and she whooped in delight. “Yoshi! You’re alive!”
“Of course I’m alive, uso-Nani!” As he watched, the screen whipped back around and his aunt moved into view, sitting beside his mother. “Tinā, I am really sorry I didn’t call or anything. We’ve been on a bit of a trip through a wormhole to the other side of the universe where we ended up fighting an evil empire—”
“Two months!” Iolana snapped. “It’s been almost two months—”
“Whoa, I had no idea. We’ve been so busy—”
“It’s been two months and THEY TOLD US YOU WERE DEAD!”
“What?” Hunk’s expression did a one-eighty from placating to baffled. “They told you we were dead?”
Coran had retreated to give Hunk some privacy, but his head snapped up at that. “Oh, dear. That’s going to complicate things.”

Matt entered the address for a vid call. As Lance waited for the call to connect, he tried to rehearse what to say to his parents. Disappearing off the face of the Earth in an alien ship for a few weeks was just a bit higher on the scale than hijacking his older brother’s waverunner or getting caught trying to hide a camera in the girls’ bathroom at school.
Finally, his mother picked up, not looking at the screen as she soothed a toddler in her arms—was that his niece Lydia? She had changed so much! A thread of disquiet ran through Lance’s chest. How long had they been gone?
“Look, I don’t know which network you’re from, but you get the same answer as everyone else. No comment, no comment, no comment!”
“Mamá?”
Her gaze sharpened on the screen and her eyes widened. The child in her arms laughed, reaching for the tablet, and shrieked, “Lan-Lan-Lan!”
Bedlam resulted. Faces crowded behind Rosa, all talking at once. Lance tried his best to keep up, not noticing when he switched to Spanish. Finally, as someone actually tried to snatch the tablet from her hand, his mother took control.
“Enough! Mina, take Lydia. All of you, stay here! Seamus, come with me!” As Lance watched, his mother dragged his father out of the family room and into…his old bedroom? But where was his stuff? The room looked nearly empty.
“Mom? Dad?”
They moved the tablet so he could see them both, and he felt his smile go watery. Don’t cry, don’t cry, you’re a Paladin of Voltron and Paladins do NOT cry!
“Hello, mi querido. We are very glad to see that you’re alive.”
“Um, of course I’m alive? We just sort of got sidetracked when the Blue Lion took us through a wormhole across space.”
His father shook his head. “You don’t understand, son. The Garrison told us you’d been killed in a training accident. You, your friend Hunk, and the Gunderson boy. We were told it was an explosion, not enough left of the bodies to bury.”
Lance stared at them, slack-jawed. It had never occurred to him that the Garrison might lie about their disappearance to their families. “Dad, Mom, I am so sorry! We would’ve tried to get in touch faster if we’d known!”
“We believe you, hijo. But you’re back now. When can you come home?”
“Allura promised that she’d find a way for us to visit. I’ll ask her as soon as she finishes healing Keith—”
His parents interrupted at the same time.
“Visit? You’re not staying?”
“Healing him? Why does he need healing?”
<> <> <> <> <>
Allura worked with a delicate touch. She was very afraid of hurting Keith, even though he seemed calm and still next to her. She pictured the Quintessence as a ribbon for the embroidery she did as a child, pulling it gently from Keith like an unwinding skein and threading it into the tapestry of the Castle.
As she extracted the excess energy from him, Allura realized that it had a…taste, for want of a better word. She didn’t remember that from the Balmera. At the time she was too focused on actually controlling the transfer, taking the Quintessence from the Castle and conducting the ritual that would multiply it in large enough quantities to heal the enormous beast.
But she could feel Keith in this energy. It seemed to carry his scent, the light musk of his skin and the leather of his jacket. She could sense his self-imposed isolation, even within the team of Voltron, and his driving need to better his skills in order to protect the others. There was a dangerous edge to his Quintessence, a volatility that could slip from control in an instant. And yet the energy was warm and vibrant, welcoming like a good fire after a cold day. Allura knew that from now on she would be able to identify Keith’s presence and find him if she concentrated just as she did with the Lions, though probably not from the same vast distances. She wondered briefly about a way to safely duplicate this process for the other Paladins.
Then something growled in her head, with a clear indication that she should stop.
But…we’re not all the way to normal levels of Quintessence for humans yet.
The growl repeated, louder and more insistent. She realized it was the Red Lion.
Allura hesitated, unsure whether to trust her own instincts or the Lion’s. When a second growl echoed the first—Black—she relented. She closed off the flow of Quintessence and carefully disengaged her link with Keith. She opened her eyes to see him deeply asleep, his face open and serene. He looked startlingly younger without the perpetual frown that was his usual expression. She glanced at Shiro and caught her breath at the open affection, the caring in his face as he looked at his fellow Paladin. She wanted to ask, but didn’t dare interrupt the moment.
He noticed that she no longer glowed and turned to her. “Did it work?”
She nodded. “He’s stable now. The cryo-pod should be able to handle anything else.”
“Let’s get one ready, then.”

Pidge wanted to babble about everything to her mother, about the adventures and dangers and joys and sorrows. Before Kerberos she had shared easily with her mom. A distance had grown between them immediately after the news of the failed mission broke, mostly due to her own insistence that it wasn’t true, that Shiro would never, ever, have made a mistake so grave. It was only when she got into the Garrison’s databases long enough to see the key video evidence from the probes showing absolutely no evidence of a crash that Colleen began to believe. The fact that Iverson banned Katie completely from the premises helped convince her. By the time Katie Holt hatched the plan to become Pidge Gunderson, her mom was completely on board.
But she could hear in the background that Lance and Hunk were having tough conversations with their families, learning that the three of them had been declared dead as well. She was not at all surprised at that. For one thing, she had searched their names and found the stories published in the last couple of months while keeping watch over Keith. For another, she already knew that the Garrison was capable of lying to cover up evidence of alien activity.
So Pidge kept things simple, assured her mother that she was good, and let her father have most of the conversation since they had been gone longer. She caught Matt’s eye and gestured an invitation to swap places with him and he nodded.
“Mom, I’m going to step over and help Lance with his call so Matt can talk to you some more. Dad can keep me posted on when we can get together – it’ll be easy between the cloaking device on my Lion and our personal camo units to slip in.”
“You should let the other families know that – I’m getting texts from the McClain girls because Lance has already let it out that he’s not planning to stay here.”
“Will do. Love you, Mom. See you soon!”
Pidge moved to stand behind Lance. He was still going in Spanish, a language in which she only had novice skill, but she could tell that he was agitatedly trying to answer two questions at once.
When his parents spotted her, his mom caught her breath and switched to English. “Hello, darling!”
Mr. McClain nodded. “Gunderson, good to see you survived all this as well.”
His wife elbowed him. “That’s Katie Holt. I told you, Seamus. I told you what Colleen said about her daughter disguising herself as a boy so she could get into the Garrison.”
“Oh, yes, I think you did. Katie, then. Are you looking forward to getting things back to normal?”
Oh, no wonder Lance was panicking.
“Well, not yet, sir. We have to go back and finish taking care of the Galra Empire.”
“You…what? No, you’re just kids!”
She shrugged. “We may be kids, but we’re the ones that the Voltron Lions picked. Now, I can arrange for Lance to visit without the Garrison knowing, but it can only be a visit. We have to finish what we started.”
She laid a hand on Lance’s shoulder, and he straightened. “You heard her. The galaxy needs us, Dad. And the sooner we get back and take care of Zarkon, the sooner we can come home for good.”
If Pidge’s matter-of-fact rebuttal had surprised him, Seamus was floored by Lance’s reply. Rosa laid a hand on his arm.
“Not now, Seamus. Lance, how much longer can you talk right now? You should say hello to Jeremy and your sisters and Abuelita while everyone is here.”
Lance looked at Pidge. “I don’t think we’re in any hurry at the moment since we’re waiting on Allura.”
She nodded and moved the hand on his shoulder into a pat. You got this?
He nodded back. I think so.

Iolana Garrett could handle things. She had been able to handle things all her life. She had handled the death of her father at a young age and growing up with her mother working two jobs while she went to school and took care of the house and her sister Konani. She had handled the desertion of her husband of less than a year, leaving her with a tiny boy to raise. She had handled the fact that her child was a gifted maker, always pulling his toys apart to see how they worked, by channeling some of that energy into cooking.
And she thought she was handling the death of her son in a training accident until she screamed at poor Colleen Holt over her insistence that the story was false. Colleen had not tried to contact her after that but the guilt ate at Iolana. Yes, it hurt to hear another mother cling to false hope, but was flinging facts in her face at top volume the way to handle that?
And now she was looking at a screen with her not-dead son and some red-haired fellow with strange ears and an enormous moustache. And after her initial shout of fury, she might be handling this. It was clear that her Yoshi had no idea of the Garrison’s story about a training accident.
“I am going to fillet that commander when I get hold of him! Why would he lie to us?”
“Tinā, it’s okay! I mean, we did sort of disappear without a trace. And they didn’t want people to panic about aliens being so close to our planet.”
Coran tried to offer support. “And since then Hunk and the others have been very busy trying to help destroy an evil empire! But now that we know how to contact you all, he can stay in touch!”
Iolana peered at the pointy-eared man, trying to decide whether the greater affront was telling her that her child was a soldier in a war that wasn’t his problem, or calling him that awful nickname that had stuck around since elementary school. But she could handle all this, especially if they now had a way to communicate regularly. The man was still talking.
“…and as soon as the princess finishes with our Red Paladin, we’ll see if we can get Hunk down there for a visit with you!”
A princess? She could handle a princess if it meant actually getting to hug her son again.

With Keith safely in the cryo-pod, Allura and Shiro headed for the bridge. They paused in the doorway, seeing pairs of people at three stations, talking to comm screens.
“Is now a good time to contact this commander?” Allura asked in a low voice. “There’s a comm panel in the meeting room.”
Shiro shook his head. “I want them to stew for a while. I also want Keith back at a hundred percent and the chance for all of us to discuss the options before we tackle the Garrison.”
“Then…do you want to contact your family?”
Shiro looked surprised at that. “I…they think I’m dead. And I’m not sure I could do that to them again. Be alive again but leave them and possibly get killed fighting Zarkon.”
Allura inhaled sharply at that. She seized his arm and pulled him back down the corridor to the nearest room, which happened to be a lounging area with enormous gallery windows looking out. Shiro was reminded of how scarily strong Allura was.
She turned him to face her. “Shiro, whatever you decide, I will ultimately support it. But I want you to reconsider. I would give almost anything to be able to speak to my parents again. And I will never have it, not even second-hand.” Tears formed in her clear-sky eyes at the memory of having to destroy the artificial intelligence of King Alfor. “Your family is something that is irreplaceable. You can surround yourselves with the best possible friends and come close, but it’s not the same.” She stepped forward and embraced him. He reflexively brought his arms up to return it.
She pressed her cheek to his face. “Think about it.” She withdrew and left him alone in the lounge.

Colleen was still chatting with Matt, mainly listening as he rhapsodized over the Altean ship and its technology. She was already steeling herself for him to leave with Katie when they returned to wherever it was. She might get him to stay for a month or two if the Voltron Force promised to come back for him, but that would be it.
A notification flashed in the corner of her screen. It was from Daichi Shirogane: The Garretts and McClains say their sons have made contact with them. We haven’t heard from Takashi. Do you know what is happening?
Colleen typed a swift reply: He might be working with the princess. From what Matt and Katie have said, he is the leader of their team. I’ll ask.
She focused back on Matt. “Sweetheart, could you find out why Shiro hasn’t called his parents yet? They really want to see him.”
“Sure thing, Mom!” She watched as he jumped up and left her screen.
<> <> <> <> <>
Matt nearly ran into the princess as he charged for the door. “Oh, sorry, your highness!” He tried to bow in passing and nearly fell. Allura steadied him and laughed lightly.
“No ceremony needed, Matt. ‘Princess’ will do and there’s no need to bow unless it’s a formal situation. Why the hurry?”
“I need to find Shiro. His parents are asking the other families why he hasn’t gotten in touch yet.”
“So they know he’s alive?” Allura’s face lit up.
“Oh, yeah! Mom told them right after we talked to her the first time, just like the others.”
“That’s wonderful news! Go, Shiro’s in the viewing gallery down the hall!”
