the branches twist. they reach past each other. they hold blossoms, and shadows, and light that doesn’t ask to be noticed.
you don’t hear them. you just see the tangle, and feel the room go quiet.
the Tree Blossom Tangle wall art holds all of that — 9 decorative sound absorbing wall panels that reduce the noise, and let the structure speak.
available in one version only: ⚫ black and white – for when complexity doesn’t need color
not just wall decor. a way to fill space without speaking over it. 🌸

more godhood AU rambling
while thinking of what the trio would get up to in 1500 years and an interesting idea came to mind
so, with all the humans gone, J, N, V and the solver are the last beings around that were on Earth before it got destroyed. Also, after that generation of old drones we see in canon are gone, no one on Copper 9 accept for those 4, Khan, and maybe Nori, will remember being on a planet that isn't just snow, ice, and dead trees (till of course they get some spaceships up and running, but I digress)
now, we've already established that N brought the immortal dogs back, but who's to say he has to stop there?
idea is that N makes it a personal project to work on bringing other animals back to the planet, and that V decides to do the same with plants. So, the two work together with some worker scientists to make the planet habitable to organic live again
I'm not sure how much progress they'd be able to make in 1500 year. It's a long time, sure, but this planet has had like 5 holes punched through its core. That kind of climate disaster is gonna take some time to fix
but I like to think that, eventuality, after spending years at the manor seeing all these plants and animals in books. The two get to see them in their new home as Copper 9 heals

zinnia : how has the loss of fallen comrades and/or loved ones affected your muse ? has it taught them anything or given them any new perspectives ? >:)
Okay let's talk about loss, actually. Loss is such an important theme in Shadows of Valentia, and in the character arcs of its entire cast. If I were feeling ambitious I'd argue that loss and the way that it's handled is The Theme, which shaped the forming of the nations, to kicking off the plot, and the negative space of each of the cast's loss is so visible and apparent in every action they take, like an embrace of those they don't want to or can't forget.
But that's an essay for another time.
Berkut being one of the major antagonists, and foil to the two protagonists, his losses affect the plot just as heavily. There is of course the obvious, and we'll discuss those in a minute, but I actually want to discuss a loss that doesn't get brought up in-game but has such clear and disastrous ramifications for Valentia as a whole.
Because you see, when Berkut was a boy, his father died.
(Cut for length. You know how it goes. SOV spoilers as well)
Now, I know what you're thinking. "Oh, boo hoo, this is Dead Father the Series, and you don't see anyone else letting themselves get possessed by a war god and sacrificing their loved ones' souls for greater power." And you're right! But bear with me, because there's more to it than that.
To start putting this into context, I'm going to pull from Valentia Accordion (the Berkut entry in which was translated by our very own Ree, here's your crown regent 👑). We learn from Berkut's section that before his father's passing, Berkut was a timid boy, to the point that even riding horseback made him cry - and after his father's passing, his mother raised him quite strictly, to harden him up so that none could tease him for growing up without a father.
As with most things Valentia, this is such a dense sentence, so let's unpack it a bit.
Obviously that's a fucked up thing to expect, that your child will be harassed for having lost a parent, but kids are cruel, and from this sentence we learn that Rigel values patrilineal lines, and to an extreme extent. Since they're the imperial family with very few heirs, it seems incredibly unlikely that Berkut's father married below his station (bordering on impossible – this is no Meghan Markle situation) - and since Berkut obviously ended up the crown prince, the heir to the empire barring any usurpers, his mother clearly retained influence within the imperial court during her time there, as noble and mother to the future Emperor.
And yet, a single mother, even widowed, still casts a shameful shadow in Rigel. We do not learn how Berkut's father died, but I'm of the opinion it was illness, for a couple of reasons: first, we have historical precedent. Generally in monarchical families that have multiple sons, the first (the heir) learns military affairs and politics, the better to ascend the throne or position when the time comes – the second (the spare) would then learn ecclesiastical affairs and gain a position in the religious affairs of the state, the better to support his brother further down the line.
Secondly, his death is implied to be something to be ashamed of, something that children would tease Berkut for. Though misogyny runs strong in many cultures, it doesn't seem enough that his mother would be concerned that his father dying on its own would be enough that Berkut would need to toughen up. Given that Rigel has such a strong martial culture, and the hard turn that Berkut's mother imposed upon him after her husband's death, it would follow that for men, there is one acceptable death: battle.
As we know, I don't put a lot of stock into Heroes' characterization, but occasionally they give us nice little nuggets, such as this one, from A Splendid Soiree level 40:
Unlike his older brother the emperor, my father was a kind, gentle man. He passed ere I was 10 years old. My mother smiled often when I was small.
If nothing else, it seemed, Berkut's mother was determined to ensure that, for better or worse, Berkut did not end up like his father.
And he didn't. Kind and gentle are not words that I would associate with Berkut, except specifically when he's interacting with Rinea – but even with that influence, we see that he is definitely a young man shaped by his upbringing, and by the culture around him. He's eager to fight, even to the point of what I would consider emotional immaturity – he's unable to see human lives for what they are, and when he first meets Alm he refers to the battle as practice, as sport, as exercise, like it's just a game that he's playing.
I think it's this disconnect that he has, this inability or the inexperience to actively practice empathy (decidedly not a value in Rigel), that makes him so susceptible to outside influences: be that Rigelian people or culture as a whole, or Rudolf's or his mother's, Duma's or Nuibaba's, or even Fernand's.
Yes, Fernand's. Despite the fact that Fernand is a political prisoner, it is undeniable that he has more worldly experience (in and out of wartime) than Berkut by the simple fact of his age. We don't have an official age for him, but we can get a good guestimate based on Clive and Mathilda's ages – 27 and 28, respectively. A full decade, at the very least, older than Berkut.
Now, this is not to say, of course, that Fernand knowingly exerted any influence over Berkut, or manipulated him – but it is to say that teenagers of Berkut's general disposition are eager to show off, and will adjust the behaviors they display in order to impress the people around them, especially those who are older or more experienced. And with Fernand himself leaning so idealistic, wanting to see something specific, it seems clear to me that natural showman Berkut was eager to mold himself into that, and to show it off at any opportunity.
Which, by the way, is something that Berkut is shown doing throughout the game, in each of his appearances – mirroring the expectations presented to him, molding himself to fit into whatever those opposite him have decided he should be, and being so proud that he gets a good grade in being manipulated.
Now, I know it seems like we're getting off topic, and that I'm trying to avoid the elephant in the room, but I promise I'm not – this is all incredibly important context for what comes next, which of course that he, under the influence of Duma's possession, sacrifices Rinea.
By this point, he has lost to Alm multiple times – with an audience, no less – he has called upon the magic pushed on him by breaking the mirror Nuibaba gave him, and he has learned that this stranger who has been defeating him all over the country is actually the one who is supposed to be the emperor's heir. Not only has Alm beaten him in battle in front of someone Berkut wanted to impress, but he has, seemingly without any of the effort Berkut has been putting in over the last several years to gain Rudolf's favor, jumped the line of succession, and is coming to take not just Rigel, but Berkut's father figure.
The second father he has lost.
Watching the scene wherein Duma fully possesses Berkut, or even just reading the script, you can feel that the ground ready to open under his feet, and his grip over his own mental autonomy is tenuous at best. He is paranoid, he lashes out, and most importantly, he's confused. The scene begins by explicitly telling us that he does not know how he arrived at Duma Temple, and he is immediately beset by Duma's presence, the voice of a god offering the power that Berkut has felt slipping from his fingers.
Whether he explicitly accepted Duma, or whether Duma forced his way in, we do not know. What we do know, however, is that the change in his personality is immediate and obvious. Both Rinea and Fernand clock that whoever is speaking, it isn't the Berkut they know – by this point, though, it's too late, and he attacks and heavily injures both of them, with Fernand making it far enough to warn Alm, and with Rinea being sacrificed to Duma.
However much of Berkut remained during his battle of Alm, it's clear from his battle quote that all of these losses, one right after another, lined up in a perfect queue of dominoes, and gripped him until his death:
You… You took…everything from me. You will SUFFER for what you’ve done!
Then, after his defeat:
Alm: Why, Berkut? To have finally found family after all this time… Why did it come to this?!  Berkut: Heh… I have no family…nor do I want for one.
Tumblr media
To put a bow on the series of tragedies that shaped Berkut into a man he didn't want to be, the family and companionship that he so desperately needed had arrived, had knocked the sense back into him just in time for him to die.
But not before one final chastisement, from the one person who had never asked him to be anything except himself:
Rinea: Dear, proud Berkut… Even without crown or throne or castle… You were ever my emperor. A just, right, and noble man…  Berkut: Rinea…  Rinea: You were born to lead… This just wasn’t your empire. So come with me now. Let us find our empire together. If you’ll still take me for your empress?  Berkut: You’re right… You were always right. The moment I turned to a power beyond myself, the man you loved was dead. Rinea, forgive me… If you’ll have me, I’d be honored to…set out with you…
For better or worse, from his mother's influence, Berkut had not ended up like his father in his death – but, in the matter of the woman he loved, perhaps he wasn't so different.

Nevarran Locations & Landmarks
Nevarra City– This is the capital of Nevarra. Home to the Grand Necropolis among other things. This is also primarily where most festivals and balls are held, as well as where the Palace of King Markus is located. Nevarra City is also home to the  residence of the Anaxas house, and location of the Duchess Games. [Though the current ruler of Cumberland hails from this family: Duke Sandral Anaxas.] It is also home to the Castrum Draconis as well as the Minanter River which carves through it.
Castrum Draconis– Vast Botanical Gardens with hundreds of statues depicting Royalty and Heroes of legend [Powerful Generals, Dragon Hunters etc.] Along the roadways leading up to the Castrum are stately columns of black marble amidst which statues of Kings & Queens of Nevarras past are on prominent display. In Autumn there is a festival held [ see Ancestral Pageant in my Nevarran Culture Post] where many great families hire performers to recreate famous moments in the statues lives by lantern light. Often draping the statues themselves with their house colors. Notably the Pentaghasts and Van Markhams tend to compete for the best show each year.
Blackthorne Manor– The estate was gifted to a family who then took on it’s name by Queen Vanneska the Fourth. [codex: ‘A Tale of the Blackthornes’] Twenty Generations have walked its halls, [meaning if a generation is estimated at 25-30 years, I would potentially date both the manner and Vanneska to 500-600 years ago, placing somewhere around 3:50 Towers to 4:50 Black.] That said, the codex this is from is annotated by Emmrich stating this must have been written in better days– that no one knows what horrible fate befell the Blackthornes. Noting rumors of suspicious deaths, untended crypts and salacious affairs. [This means that my date estimates could be to young and the manor could be even older.] At some point since its abandonment, it became the base for the Necromancer Johanna Hezenkoss.
Grand Necropolis– A large mausoleum sometimes said to be at the heart of Nevarra city while other sources say it's on the outskirts of the city. This is the main base of operation for all Mortalitasi, including the Mourn Watch. There are open-air gardens, crypts, and mausolieums. The structure is as large as a city in its own right, some royal burials being described as palaces of their own. [Lead concept artist Matt Rhodes remarked while designing the structure that, at least in early concepts, his inspiration was an inverted Tower of Babel. The Mortalitassi, instead of seeking knowledge from the stars, they seek it from their dead.] It is also of note that the geography of the Necropolis shifts quite a bit. Chambers are known to shift and change sporadically. [Note the Memorial Gardens being lost until Rook discovers they had moved to the Vault of the Beloved & also the lack of panic over the Basalt Hypogeum at first because it was thought they moved within the Necropolis, not that they were stolen.] Though Emmrich does say during the 'Walking the Graves' questline that it is unlikely for a section to move while people are inside of it, impling it's more common for less traversed chambers to shift. Unless I am mistaken it appears the cause of this is shift is largely unknown, if not gently implied that it's something to disuade tomb raiding. [I cannot remember which dialogue it is said in, I will search, but I am pretty sure looting deterents are mentioned at one point.] While some areas like the gardens are open to the public for days of mourning, many of the lower wings are heavily restricted even among the order.
Basalt Hypogeum– A vast section of the Necropolis that was stolen and transported to Blackthorne Manor to facilitate Johanna Hezenkoss’ experiments. Many Watchers were curious of its disappearance as it was sudden, though the Necropolis does tend to shift often. Myrna noted it was a ‘matter of strange obliquity’. Once Johanna is defeated Myrna notes a great magic will be required to attempt to transport and restore the wing to its place in the Necopolis. Design wise we know this is one of the more impressive and old sactums within the Necropolis, the basalt being shipped from Rivain in 4:57 Black. We also know the name of the Stonemason who crafted its impressive halls: Othmar Gerdebrand.
Cascades– One of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’
Chamber of the Unforged– This is a hexagonal chamber with several small treasure caches on each spoke. Notably this is where Rook faces the Formless One when it possessed the body of a taxidermied high dragon. It is considered one of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’. The hallway leading to this chamber seems to hold several important memorials, as statues, paintings and gated off rooms of gold and urns line each side. [Knowing that the Tanhausen family commissioned the high dragon to be taxidermied it could possibly be a wing for their quite prominent family. However we do know that the ‘last’ crypt of the Tanhausen’s is in the Memorial Gardens.]
Charnel Bridge– Mentioned briefly in banter between Bellara and Emmrich for good places to learn more about undead. It’s briefly mentioned that the ‘nightmare fog’ has overwhelmed it.
Charnel Pyramid– A section of the Necropolis that is ‘disagreeably cursed.’ [Codex entry: From Myrna, on Rediscovering the Gardens] Myrna recommended that the Pyramid should go through a lustration before the next Equinox. [Lustration: a policy that removes public officials or beings from positions of power associated with a repressive regime; this makes me wonder if it is similar to the situation with undead during the War of Banners.] The area surrounding the pyramid must also be quite sizeable as it was debated to be used as a backup location for public days of mourning in the event the location of the Memorial Gardens was not rediscovered in time.
Cobalt Ossuary– A resting place for skulls within the Necropolis. This is the location of the spiritual disturbance in the short story ‘A Flame Eternal’ in which a skull began to hiss and scream from it’s niche. [We know that some royal families and high nobility have full Palaces as their resting places. I would assume an Ossuary with skulls in niches more than likely is for lower nobility, or even commoners if they are able to be inturned in the necropolis, based oh how unextravagant in sound in comparison. But this is just a guess.]
Crescent Fane– Another chamber of burial, described vaguely as having sunken black walls, with bowls of silver flames [I am not sure if this is a descriptor for veilfire or something else entirely.] around each coffin. [‘A Flame Eternal’] The only known person interred here is a woman named Mathilde, whose husband’s skull became restless until they were once again joined together. [Fane, also means a temple or shrine, so it is possible this is a temporary resting place for the recently dead, maybe to prepare them or just until they are moved to a more final resting place, as Emmrich mentions Mathilde passed ‘in her sleep, last midnight.’]
Hollow Belfry– This seems to be a common area, or main spoke. Several hallways branch off into the other chambers of the Necropolis. The center has a lowered portion where Myrna and Vorgoth tend to be stationed, alerting watchers to hauntings & providing the guild market. It also has an upper atrium. Above the chamber sets a massive bell called the Sunken Star. It is responsible for keeping malign spirits from entering certain chambers of the Necropolis (but probably not 100% of them). A ritual is need to ring the bell, so more than likely it happens intermittently through the year as the wards weaken. The direct quote when pertaining to the Sunken Star’s ability: “…in fact any malicious spirit that hears the tolling of the bell will be banished back into the Fade.”
The Memorial Gardens– This is where public days of mourning are held, while we don’t know it’s original location we do know that this chamber went missing before appearing at the vault of the Beloved [Which, in my opinion is in some way the Necropolis foreshadowing Emmrich & Rook getting together (conditional) since this seems to be Emmrich’s favourite spot to wander, and well Vault of the Beloved… anyways I digress.] The Garden is a cemetery that spralls outward amongst an array of flowers and statues.  This includes the Tableau of the Dead, created from real skeletons in 7:20 Storm. As well as the large statuary monument ‘Love in Life and Death’ which displays two skeletons kissing among other posed figures, overgrown with a flower called shrouds kiss. This is a statue dedicated to the enduring passion of those bound by love. We know that the Rites of Rememberance can be performed by Watchers here as well as a meditative puzzle involving the cleansing bells. In addition to that, the only known/named people to be buried here are Rupert & Elannora Volkarin [Emmrich’s parents], and  the last tomb of the Tanhanhausen line.
The Path of Glory– Just off to the Side of the Memorial gardens. It holds rooms featuring boardgames, grave mist, and such along with it’s skeletons.
The Path of Sighs– One of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’.
Shrouded Halls– One of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’.
Spectral Court– One of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’.
Unspoken Valley- Mentioned briefly in banter between Bellara and Emmrich for good places to learn more about Spirits. It’s briefly mentioned that the ‘nightmare fog’ has overwhelmed it.
Upper Mortuary- in banter with Neve, Emmrich mentions he left several of his books in his apartment at the Necropolis. When questioned if most Mourn Watchers live on the Necropolis grounds, he simply replies that the ‘Upper Mortuary is quite pleasant.’ this to me signifies that he is not the only one, and/or this could be one of many more residential areas within the Necropolis. I would assume if this is an area for high up faculty, students and trainees may be housed elsewhere.
Vault of the Beloved– One of the ‘Lost Watcher’s Wings’. This is the new resting place of the Memorial Gardens.
Weeping Vale– We simply do not know much about what the Weeping Vale is, but dialogue between Emmrich and Rook (conditional to Mourn Watch) tells us that recently there was a problem solved by the Mourn Watch to stop wandering cenotaphs from appearing. [A cenotaph is a memorial or monument to someone whose body is buried elsewhere. This is typically done to honor those who died in war, but not always.]
Flora of the Necropolis– I cannot find much on plants related to Nevarra specifically, but some are mentioned directly, or visually matched from past games: Variegated Weeping Widower, Shrouds Kiss, Blue Creepvine, Moon Blossom, Embrium* [A flower that is similar in apperance and color except for the ember at the center is found in some of the vases] & unknown willows capable of making their own noises [Codex: New Fauna].
Hunter Fell– A small city west of the capital. This is where King Caspar Pentaghast is from, as well as the location of the tea house that Charter calls a meeting of spies to discuss the movements and motivations of Solas. [Tevinter Nights: The Dread Wolf Take You] The only other thing to really note is that when Tylus Van Markham seized the throne from King Nestor Pentaghast [5:37 Exhalted], several surviving Pentaghasts fled to Hunter Fell. Eventually in 9:42 Dragon, the Inquisiton was called in to investigate Duke Tythas Pentaghst, ruler of Hunter Fell. He commanded a network of spies and warriors called the ‘Five Belles of Hunter Fell’ suspected of being tied to the Venatori.
Cumberland– One of the largest cities in Thedas, it sits South of Nevarra city, where the Imperial highway forks and portside to the Waking Sea. Not only does it function as a major trading port but also as a seat of immense knowledge. Home to the College of Magi, which is thought to bear the brightest mages and scholars throughout Thedas. It is also where many tournaments of combat, and archery are held. The current ruler is Duke Sandral Anaxas.
Diamond Lass– in the ‘Dragon’s Den’ district of Cumberland, this is a luxury inn. Drinks are said to be served with crystal goblets alongside runes said to keep the beverage cold.
‘Dragon’s Den’– This is a walled off sector of town, adjacent to the more wealthy quarters of the city. It functions as a Dwarven trading hub and due to his most of the buildings are described to have distinctly Dwarven Architecture.
Forsythia Estate– This is the ancestral residence of the noble house Forsythia.
College of Magi– The college of Magi sits at the center of the city the Sun Dome’s golden exterior and massive spires making the city itself seem gilded and brilliant.  The palace itself was gifted to the Chantry by  a Nevarran Duchess. Keeping with the Nevvarran tradition of statues, the College of Magi is no different, the entryway featuring busts of ever Grand Enchanter from the last 600 years since this is the place from which they are chosen by a council of First Enchanters. The College of Magi is thought to bear the brightest mages and scholars throughout Thedas, some of which then move on to recruitment with the Mortalitasi.
Additional notes about historical events at the College of Magi [& some Dorian and Ashur lore]: In 9:38 following the Kirkwall Rebellion, the Chantry disbands meetings of the College of Enchanters [Based on context and what I am able to find, it seems the College of Enchaters is the name of the council of First Enchanters.], as well as any unsanctioned mage gatherings. This meant the dissolving of mage fraternities. This is also around the time that former Warden Fiona is elevated to the position of Grand Enchanter. [Wynne blames this as the reason the conclave was disbanded.] Grand Enchanter Fiona was quick to begin campaigning for independence, leading a vote among the College of Enchanters to secede from the Chantry entirely. Though the vote did not pass, the existence of the vote was enough for the Templar order to call for the dissolution of the College of Enchanters. More political unrest insues leading to Divine Justinia II calling for a meeting of the College of Enchanters, now disbanded, to the White Spire instead of their traditional seat in Cumberland. This lead to Grand Enchanter Fiona once again pleading for secession, causing High Seeker Lambert to declare the College of Enchanters treasonous. After a daring rescue of some of the enchanters, Fiona once again led a vote on succession in Cumberland. This time since too few first enchanters remained, some having died in capture, the fraternities casted their votes. This lead  ultimately to the dissolution of the circles and the movement towards mage freedom. The factions mentioned above include:
Aequitarians– This is the most dominant of the fraternities in the College of Magi. Their ideology is moderate, and thus popular. It is that mages must use their abilities ethically, and responsibly within society regardless of Chantry law. They believe mages have the power to help people, and should be doing so. Historically leaders of this group include Wynne & Rhys.
Isolationists– While less popular, this smaller faction simply believes mages should separate from the Chantry, and society as a whole. Creating their own systems and culture without any scrutiny towards the practice of magic or danger towards those without.
Libertarians– This group desires the Circle to become self governed and separate rom the chantry. While on the surface the Libertarians seek to do this peacefully, a subgroup of resolutionists within the faction have no issue usng violent means to achieve this. This group has been led historically by Fiona & Adrian.
Loyalists– As the name implies this group is the most devout, following the word of the Chantry. They are often viewed negatively by other mages for being apologists to the oppression faced by mages.
Lucrosians– the smallest fraternity amongst the College of Magi, these mages simply align themselves with the priority of gaining wealth, and political influence over any social cause.
In Veilguard we receive a conversation between Dorian Pavus and Ashur [who may or may not be Divine Aequitas II] in which Dorian comments, ‘Speaking of brash rebels, remember Cumberland? Spring of ‘38?’ to which Ashur replies ‘I wish I didn’t.’ This has had me so curious as to why they were present, were they part of the fraternities that helped vote against the circles since fraternities voted in the place of first enchanters? Or were they simply there as support to keep templars from intervening the College of Enchanters meeting. Either way. Super interesting additional lore on Dorian & Ashur. We know Dorian was part of the Lucerni [a faction dedicated to redeeming and restoring Tevinter] but that is a group exclusive to the Magistirium and not one of the fraternities of the College of Magi. In fact it is more than likely closer tied to the Shadow Dragons. [If you want a less summarized version of 9:38 Dragon, most of the information comes from Dragon Age: Asunder.]

Thank you all for the kind words on my first lore post. In this next section I tried to break down several key locations. If there are ones you'd like to see that I did not explore please let me know! If there is anything I missed or got incorrect, I am open to corrections! Additionally I would love any additional descriptions or information about the sections of the Necropolis, information is scarce, so any additional notes are welcomed. For more posts on this topic, they will be marked on my page under the tag Nevarran lore.
I hope for this to be a resource for fic writers but also knowledge for my fellow lore nerds. More will be posted soon as feel sections become complete.
Update Edits: More insight on the shifting chambers of the Necropolis, and additional lore on the Basalt Hypogeum. Info on the Sunken Star.
Thank you guys for the feedback <3

time to learn a little bit about the Yells. i've been writing a few lore posts for a while and instead of continuing to let they grow and fretting over them, i think i'm just going to throw a few out there and try to finish up the rest this week.
The Yells
Despite their imposing size, strange behaviors, and mysterious keepers, the Signallusc (or The Yells as most rabbits call them) are considered just another part of the island landscape. These towering faux trees serve as the island version of radio towers, and make all radio communication above and below ground possible.
Though the 2 largest of the naturally formed Yells are still upright and active (and heavily protected so that their natural life cycle can be properly studied), these days rabbits prefer to cultivate the towers so that they don’t grow in problematic areas or do…other things.
Wild or free growth Yells make their homes in dead rotting wood as natural decomposers, and many live out their lives as simple slime molds (or as simple as any slime mold can be). Certain conditions must be met to trigger the drastic color change and vertical growth that make them viable for communication use, and so wild Yells are usually found growing in small clusters in or around the resources they need to sustain their new forms. Dead trees or stumps with roots still in the ground are prime hosts for these slime molds and they’re actually seen as beneficial since they stabilize potentially dangerous dead trees and kill diseases or especially destructive insects that might harm surrounding living trees. Once inside these dead trees the slime mold eats them from the inside out, taking the branches first, and then devouring the mass from the top down.
Compared to other slime molds they can handle direct sunlight quite well, but wild yells still tend to favor hosts in shady areas and from the way these trees are devoured they seem to try and keep some sort of shell around them for as long as possible. This wooden shell not only serves as food, but also gives the growing Yell a moist, dark, home until its outer membrane is thick and strong enough to handle being constantly exposed. When wild Yells “die”, it’s usually because they’ve run out of host tree long ago, and have stiffened into a rigid structure that eventually cracks (usually due to being struck by lightning) and crumbles, releasing clouds of spores. The remains of a Yell dissolve in the first rain after they fall and tend to leave the area around the strange lotus pod-ish pit in the ground where “roots” used to be spotless, but smelling very metallic with a hint of foulness. Almost like not so fresh blood.
Through the observations recorded by island botanists and the specific botanical sect known as the Antenna, rabbits (and hares, as they were the first to investigate and made great strides in understanding the process before they left the island en masse) have learned exactly what triggers Yell vertical growth and have used this knowledge to cultivate Yells quite successfully. A combination of owl feathers, metal ore (mainly bog iron), charcoal sticks and or ash (best if created by lightning strike, wood preferred but animal remains like burned out hawks are perfectly acceptable), and a little starter wood are fed to the slime mold, and after it’s broken everything down it begins its transformation. It is then introduced to a host plant sprout, a type of fast growing, woody, creeping vine in the Grasp family bred specifically for this purpose (wild cultivars work fine but they’re half as hardy and the bond has a greater chance of triggering very upsetting mutations. These are different from the upsetting mutations, which are fine and harmless). From then on the slime mold seems to guide the host plant’s growth, forming a shell from the vines that is constantly growing and shedding. This serves as both a home and an ample food source.
The botany world is torn on whether this forms a mutualistic symbiotic relationship or whether it’s straight up parasitism. And yes, plant nerd blood has been spilled over this argument. Not a ton of blood, it’s not like this is the great lichen wars, but still.
The Antenna
All yell care-taking is done by the Antenna sect. This is a mysterious group of witchy botanists and engineers who, like the previously referred to upsetting mutations, are harmless despite their entire vibe. Well. Harmless enough for botanists anyway.
Not a lot is known about them by the general public but they keep things working smoothly and show up quickly when something isn’t.
Members of this sect haven’t had a set “look” or uniform for about a generation and a half due to the ending of a lot of the the founding member’s bloodlines, but each Yell site has it’s own culture that attracts certain kinds of people. Despite their differences, there are a few things that make Antennae easier to pick out of a crowd if you know what to look for. The skin of their inner ears develop thin branching markings or wave-like ripples depending on how they interact with Yells. Some have obvious hare ancestry and sport roughly branching horns that grow quite long and shed every year (these shed horns are fed to the Yells). Newer members wear a lot of lightweight ear jewelry to help pick up important signals and behavioral quirks from the Yells, but the longer they stay in the Antenna the less tolerant they are of this. Things get…loud. Behind their eyes. Inside their teeth. Seasoned members usually can’t stand wearing any metal jewelry at all. The head botanist of one of the most remote Yells wears ear plugs almost 24/7 because of left behind shrapnel from an accident in his youth.
He is deaf.
He says he’s not really blocking anything out, just sorting it properly.
No one really knows what he means. It’s fine.

As promised, welcome to
Fun biology in TOTK’s designs
I'll keep this post updated as I go through the game. I'm going to skip the more general identifiable things like apples (they're based on apples!) because there are tons of more unusual species to talk about.
Overall, the really interesting thing I've noticed is that many of the more unique Earth-based lifeforms in TOTK are super ancient, like predating dinosaurs ancient, which is a really cool tie-in to the overall time-hopping plotline of TOTK. Specifically, they're found in the new areas (caves, depths) while the surface remains a bit more normal.
(There will be no plot spoilers in this post, and also I've barely gotten into the plot because I'm spending all my time wandering, so shhh no spoilers in the tags for like a month please.)
Most recent additions: More lilies, irises, wild ginger, spiny bones, pigeon extravaganza, plus added some more real photo comparisons to old stuff.
PLANTS
Bryophytes my beloved. Bryophytes are among the earliest land plants, waaaay predating flowers and even seeds. In our world, they’re small by necessity—they lack vascular systems to help move water around like other plants, so they have to stay small and moist (hence their frequency in caves in TOTK—though they do need some light in real life.)
In TOTK they’re quite large and I think that’s very sexy and art directors should give us big bryophytes more often
Anyway, there are three types of bryophytes: mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. First image pair is a moss, second is a liverwort. Those red-brown and palm-tree-like structures, respectively, are their reproductive structures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Real liverwort photo © Graham Calow, NatureSpotUK
Not yet spotted: Hornworts! Did they forget the third bryophyte sister :(
I think these next guys are probably lycopods (specifically club moss, which is not a true bryophyte moss, thanks science.) Very old, but vascular, so they're a bit more evolutionarily recent than bryophytes.
Tumblr media

All the enormous curly-topped trees in the depths: Ferns! They curl like that until they unfurl. Another very old plant, though younger than bryophytes and lycopods.

Brightblooms and some of the other giant plants in the depths: Possibly based on a cycad? Again, a very ancient plant lineage. At this point, evolutionarily, they've developed seeds—that giant cone in the center is called a strobilus, and that's the seed structure.
Tumblr media
These next few plants are angiosperms, meaning they produce flowers. Angiosperms are a more recent evolutionary lineage—still many millions of years old, but it took a while to develop flowers as a reproductive tactic.
Sundelions (left) are a fun recolor of a lily. There are also some scenery lilies (right) in various places—there are yellow ones that spring up when you turn on a lightroot (which gives them literal and thematic connection to the surface) and several other varieties, including tiger lilies, throughout Hyrule. Fun note, the sundelions appear to only have 5 stamen, while other lilies in the game (correctly) have 6. Seems to be an intentional decision to make it a more distinct fantasy species.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These next ones are Peruvian lilies/Alstroemeria, just used as a scenery plant but a very fun inclusion. Fun fact, not true lilies, so they're not deadly to cats like true lilies are.
Tumblr media
Real photo © Dick Culbert, Wikipedia
Plum trees: These are also called out as plum trees in game! There's a journal in Kakariko that refers to the plum orchards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I'm a little proud of figuring this one out. Bomb flowers blend a few botanical references. Superficially, the fruit resembles a type of seed pod called a capsule—specifically it's very similar to a poppy capsule. The little red thing in the center is a nice addition to resemble both a flower stigma (reproductive part that leads to the ovary) and a bomb fuse. Now, poppy capsules disperse their seeds via wind, but there are other plants who do explode their seeds outwards as a dispersal tactic! This is called explosive dehiscence.
There is one tree in particular called the sandbox tree, AKA monkey-no-climb or dynamite tree (yes, really.) Their capsules look more like little pumpkins, but are known for violently exploding when ripe—they can launch seeds at 150 miles per hour (250 km/h) and spread them roughly 200 feet (60 m) away. The photo comparison is a poppy capsule but you should def go look up dynamite tree videos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Fire fruits (and the other elemental fruits) grow on the same generic plant that looks kind of like it has grape leaves. Fire fruits resemble a specific botanical thing too though—the black netting is a papery calyx (part of the flower) seen in a nightshade genus, Physalis (golden berries, tomatillos, etc.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Real photo © Helene Rogers, Alamy
I think this stuff is an Asarum, AKA wild ginger. I was actually puzzling over it until I walked past some today and went HEY
Not sure of the exact species but they're very green and heart-shaped and love being dense and low to the ground.
Tumblr media
Real photo via David Stang, Wikipedia
Irises: Love irises, one of my favorite flowers and words, very happy to see them in game.
Tumblr media
MISCELLANEA
Cup lichen! Lichen is not a plant, but a symbiotic structure of an algae + a fungi. Cup lichen is just a type of lichen formation that has a kind of vertical cup-like structure.
Tumblr media
Real photo via Bernard Spragg
Geology crossover! Go look carefully at some of the whiter walls in the depths—they look like they have fossils of coral and other undersea hard-structured animals in them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ANIMALS
Sticky lizards: Based on Diplocaulus, a very early (now extinct) amphibian! Their skulls are wacky. We're not sure whether the long sides stood out separately or were smoothly connected to the body by skin flaps, but the separate arrow-like shape is the most popular rendition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deep firefly: Might be a stretch because it could just be a multi-winged fantasy critter, but I think the "wings" and antennae are very reminiscent of Anomalocaris, an ancient aquatic arthropod.
Update: Other folks in the notes/tags have pointed out that they're probably based on a cryptid that's especially popular in Japan: skyfish AKA rods! They show up in photos and people think they're an alien lifeform. In reality, they're an optical blur created when a lower quality video captures intermittent flaps of an insect's wings, leaving sort of a many-winged smear in the photo. Thanks to all who left info!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little frox: Another stretch because it totally could just be a Hinox-like frog, but every time I see the little ones I can't help but think of like...Ichthyostega, Mastodonsaurus, Eryops, and other early amphibians. They were pretty hefty—little frox size or bigger—and had with little waddling legs. This is less "I think it's definitely this" and more "it makes me happy when I picture frox as primitive amphibians."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't detailed many of the scenery animals around Hyrule because most are identifiable with the camera function—it'll tell you that a certain animal is a heron or porgy, for example, and those groups are real, even though the exact species is made up. But I think the pigeons are fun because they're all crested pigeons. Pink-necked green pigeons may have also been the inspiration for the color palettes on the wood and rainbow pigeons.
Tumblr media
Both pigeon photos via JJ Harrison, Wikipedia
Spiny bones: Not a specific critter, but those spiny bones that you can find lying around Eldin Canyon are vertebrae—possibly from the same thing that left those big rib cages around? The top spike is the spinous process where muscles attach, the littler spikes on the side are the transverse and articular processes. The dark O in the center is the spinal cord.
Tumblr media
Also I made a friend who finally recognizes my purpose in Hyrule.
Tumblr media
That's all I've got for now! Will add more as I keep playing.

April Fools’ Special: “The Great Prank War of Blueberry Yogurt Academy” Crack-filled spinoff…Non-canon. No logic. Just glitter and emotional whiplash.
The day begins with a single, ominous announcement echoing through the Academy’s ancient halls
“To all students and faculty: April 1st shall henceforth be known as the Day of Arcane Fools. The Hall of Enlightenment bears no responsibility for what is to come. Proceed with chaos.”
You wake up to find your shoes replaced with jelly slimes that scream “THE TRUTH IS A LIE” with every step. Chai Latte Cookie bursts in moments later, giggling uncontrollably.
“Don’t look at me like that,” she says, deadpan. “Hazelnut dared me. Besides, you do look good in slime shoes.”
Earl Grey Cookie and Hazelnut Biscotti Cookie have barricaded the dining hall, claiming it's under quarantine due to "rogue custard spirits." They’re dressed in full alchemical hazmat robes, enforcing ridiculous entry rites like reciting the entire history of blueberry cultivation.
And then oh, then comes Shadow Milk Cookie. He enters the dining hall by materializing from a burst of stardust and scrolls, grand cloak billowing behind him, voice echoing with noble gravitas.
“BEHOLD. I HAVE FORESEEN THE GREATEST FOOLERY IN THE STARS. AND I yes, I, the Sage of Truth SHALL JOIN THIS GLORIOUS NONSENSE.”
He’s wearing sunglasses shaped like ancient runes, and his Soul Jam is flickering with rainbow disco light. Chai Latte Cookie collapses into laughter. “I knew he’d crack eventually,” she whispers, nudging you. “Is it weird that I find this version of him kinda... charming?”
Shadow Milk Cookie has declared a Prank War Tournament structured, of course. He conjures scrolls of rules that are 73 pages long and somehow signed by “The Ghost Council.” No one remembers such a council existing before today.
The teams are set Team Moonmilk  consists of You, Shadow Milk, and Chai Latte. Team Chaos Custard consists of Hazelnut, Earl Grey, and a very confused first-year student who thought this was a study group.
The war includes
Potion Ping-Pong don’t drink the wrong one; some give you wings, others uncontrollable hiccup spells.
Scroll Charades, where mispronunciation can summon temporary illusions (Earl Grey accidentally conjures a herd of tiny squealing sheep. No one knows why.)
and Hide-and-Seek through the Nightmare Archive, where all the books whisper dad jokes to throw you off.
At one point, Shadow Milk Cookie corners you in a corridor, gently smirking behind his rune-glasses.
“You’ve played quite cleverly today. I daresay I underestimated you, my starlit assistant in tomfoolery.”
You blink at him. “You just enchanted the custodian's mop to sing opera. Doesn’t that count as clever?”
He gasps. “That mop had dreams!” Later, during a breather in the botanical gardens where prank pollen causes uncontrollable giggling fits Chai Latte sits beside you and hands you a cup of your favorite drink…which now sparkles for some reason. She leans her head on your shoulder with a soft sigh.
“Even if the world’s falling into prank-fueled chaos,” she murmurs, “I’m glad I get to be by your side. Just like always.” Before you can answer, Shadow Milk calls across the courtyard, waving what appears to be a glitter bomb shaped like a moonstone.
“Come, my dear trickster! We must seal our victory with The Grand Finale of Truth Confetti!”
You glance between your two companions, the sage gleaming with wild delight, and your friend glowing with gentle fondness. And you think
Maybe this is what truth feels like too. Not just in knowledge... But in joy. In being seen. And in letting yourself laugh.
Operation: Confess or Confuzzle
You are minding your business. Simply existing. Enjoying a perfectly normal snack in the courtyard after surviving the Prank Tournament. The sun is gentle. The air smells like a mix of lemon balm and unidentifiable magical residue. Peaceful. Then Hazelnut Biscotti approaches with a shifty look in his eyes. “Just so you know,” he says, “something’s about to happen. I tried stopping them. I really did.” You don’t even have time to ask before
“DEAREST SCHOLAR OF MY HEART!”
Shadow Milk Cookie descends. From the sky. Cloak trailing behind him, arms wide, like a meteor of romantic drama. He lands on one knee before you, holding up a scroll with your name written in sparkly calligraphy.
Chai Latte Cookie is behind him, barely holding in her laughter. She gives you a wink and mouths, Just play along.
“For far too long,” Shadow Milk intones, “I have resisted these truths buried within me. But nay, I can hide no longer. On this sacred day of cosmic jest, I confess my soul yearns not just for truth... but for you.”
The entire courtyard goes silent. Several upper scholars drop their scrolls. One of them screams. Your jaw drops. You open your mouth to ask what in the moon-blessed realms is going on, but Shadow Milk continues.
“I seek not merely academic clarity, but the clarity of your gaze. Grant me thy hand, thy snack, and perhaps even thy study notes.”
He holds out a macaroon. You’re about to respond with something resembling a sound when…
“I OBJECT!”
Chai Latte Cookie storms forward in full theatrical fury, knocking over a chair for effect. “You can’t just confess on April Fools’ Day, Sage. That’s breaking the Ancient Rules of Trickery. Which means by Article 7, Clause Chaotic I have the right to duel you for their heart.”
You blink. “What.”
Shadow Milk narrows his eyes. “So be it. Let this duel commence.”
The Duel for Your Affection: “Truth vs Tea”
Location: The Courtyard of Possibly Cursed Flowers Judges: Earl Grey, Hazelnut, and the Opera Mop Weapons: Pranks only. Winner is whoever makes you laugh harder.
ROUND ONE: Prank Poetry
Chai Latte: Delivers a fake love poem that starts beautiful and ends in a recipe for lemon muffins. You tear up. Until she pulls a muffin from your pocket and yells, “Checkmate!”
Shadow Milk: Opens an ancient tome that releases a recording of him dramatically confessing his love to a potted plant...your potted plant. From three weeks ago. How did he even???
Point goes to Shadow Milk Cookie, for historical commitment.
ROUND TWO: The Embarrassing Memory Spell
They each cast a minor illusion spell that reveals a shared memory.
Chai Latte: Shows a moment when you fell asleep studying drooling and all, hairs out of place and she gently covered you with her scarf, staring at you like you were the only Cookie in the world.
Shadow Milk: Accidentally shows you calling him “Shmilk” in a dream. Out loud. In a crowded library.
You scream. Your face flushing. They both look smug. Point goes to Chai Latte, for psychological warfare. Wasn't the point of this to make you laugh?...
FINAL ROUND: Personal Confession Bomb
Each gets one final statement to “convince” you.
Chai Latte Cookie: She steps forward, all teasing gone from her face. Voice soft.  “If I only get to make you laugh today… that’s enough for me. But if there ever comes a day you want to know how I really feel…”  She presses a tiny folded note into your hand. “You’ll find me.”
Shadow Milk Cookie: He clears his throat, awkwardly solemn for once.  “It may have begun as a jest, but in trying to make you laugh, I uncovered a... truth I hadn’t prepared for. I would like to continue being the reason you smile even if it's as a fool.”  He bows. “Though I must admit... I rather like it when you blushed.”
The courtyard erupts.
Earl Grey: “I CALL IT A TIE.” Hazelnut: “I vote for the mop.” The Mop: operatic screeching intensifies
Epilogue:
You’re left on the grass, heart pounding, surrounded by absurdity and affection. A note in one hand. A glitter scroll in the other. And two very different Cookies one warm like tea, the other burning like a comet watching you with soft smiles.
And even though it’s all a joke...
...why does it feel so real?
Post-Credits Scene: The mop lands a solo in the Academy spring recital. No one questions it.
A/N I made this not weeks ago but maybe a week and a half ago waiting for today...<3
It's just silly and non-canon

Studying with Riddle is very structured. He has a study plan, a schedule, and even pre-made review sheets. You don’t just study—you prepare like it’s a duel.
But he’s surprisingly gentle with you. If you don’t understand something, he pauses the session to explain it from another angle, sometimes even using little metaphors to help you.
He lights up when you get the answer right.
“Correct, exactly as I taught you. Very good.”
If you ever compliment him on being a good tutor, he flushes slightly and stiffens.
“W-Well… It’s only natural for the Housewarden of Heartslabyul to be academically exemplary. Still, thank you.”
When you leave, he’ll hand you a small, neatly packed snack or herbal tea, saying:
“To keep your mind clear—don’t skip your meals.”
─────────────────────────
Ruggie’s study vibe is casual. You’re both sprawled out somewhere comfy, probably the lounge or under a tree. He keeps things light to avoid burnout.
He’s sharp, though—great at pointing out shortcut methods or helping you understand tricky questions without making your brain explode.
Occasionally, he’ll make jokes or tease you when you overthink.
“C’mon, don’t make that face. It ain’t a life-or-death quiz, y’know?”
He brings snacks (stolen or otherwise) and sneakily slides them to you mid-session when he sees you losing steam.
If you thank him, he shrugs, a little flustered.
“Don’t go gettin’ mushy on me now, but I’ll admit, it’s kinda fun helpin’ ya.”
─────────────────────────
Azul treats it like a business meeting at first—your study area is organized, quiet, and candlelit. He offers to quiz you or share special study materials “for a price” (joking… mostly).
But once you settle in, his demeanor softens. He genuinely enjoys teaching and loves it when you ask questions.
When you compliment how well he explains something, he adjusts his glasses and smiles.
“You flatter me, but I must admit, I do take pride in being thorough.”
He gets bashful if you bring him a snack or thank him earnestly.
“I… appreciate that. You’re quite thoughtful.”
At the end of your study session, he’ll subtly ask if you’ll study again soon—because he really doesn’t want it to be a one-time thing.
─────────────────────────
Jade is calm, composed, and slightly intimidating—but he’s actually a really soothing presence while studying. He speaks softly, explains clearly, and never rushes you.
You study somewhere quiet, maybe an empty hallway or botanical corner. He watches your progress with curiosity.
When you get stuck, he’ll lean in and ask:
“Shall I explain it again in a different way, perhaps?”
He never makes you feel dumb, but his compliments are cryptic.
“It’s quite satisfying to see how you flourish under pressure.”
Occasionally, he’ll test you with trick questions just to keep you sharp, smirking when you catch on.
You leave the study session feeling smarter... and like you just passed a secret test you didn’t know you were taking.
─────────────────────────
Studying with Floyd is a gamble. He gets bored fast and groans at every long passage, but if you care about the material, he might actually pay attention.
He sprawls across the floor, pokes at your notes, and leans close when you’re trying to focus.
“Shrimpy, you’re takin’ this way too seriously... but you look kinda cute when you squint like that.”
When you finally get an answer right after struggling, he claps (loudly) and grins.
“Ooh, look at you go! Brain’s finally wakin’ up, huh?”
He acts all wild and lazy, but subtly watches you the whole time. If he sees you looking tired, he’ll throw a pillow at you and say,
“Nap break! You can’t be smart on a tired brain.”
─────────────────────────
Kalim is the sunshine of finals week. He’s always excited to study with you, even if he’s not the best at staying on-topic.
You have to gently nudge him back on track every five minutes, but he’s so genuinely kind and open that you don’t mind.
If he doesn’t understand something, he’ll laugh and go,
“Whoops! Guess I need to ask Jamil again—but maybe you can help me first?”
He’s always praising you:
“You’re so smart! Seriously, you explained that better than any teacher I’ve had!”
He brings snacks, cushions, and even little good-luck charms. You leave his study session smiling, no matter how much you got done.
─────────────────────────
Studying with Jamil is surprisingly comfortable; he’s patient, observant, and really good at breaking down complex material.
He sighs when Kalim barges in halfway through your sessions, but you catch the tiniest hint of a smile when you laugh.
He’ll pretend to be annoyed, but he really does want you to do well.
“Focus. I’ll quiz you again until you get it right.”
If you do well, he gives you this quiet little nod of approval.
“...Not bad. Looks like you’ve been listening after all.”
When you offer to quiz him, he acts indifferent at first—but clearly enjoys being challenged back.
─────────────────────────
Silver’s study sessions are soft, warm, and peaceful… if he stays awake. You often have to nudge him gently when his head starts drooping mid-page.
He’s a thoughtful and calm teacher. If you ask him to explain something, he thinks carefully before speaking, and his voice is steady and low.
He’ll even offer to read passages aloud to help you focus, and his voice is soothing enough to lull you to sleep too.
When you get overwhelmed, he gives such sincere encouragement it melts your heart.
“It’s alright. You’re doing better than you think.”
Sometimes you both end up leaning against each other, quiet books in hand, the world soft around you.
