Hi! I found your at from a zine modding advice compilation doc. I am planning to make a zine, but I have no experience modding. I was wondering if I could get your advice on how to make realistic/fulfillable plans as a newbie?

Hi there! I'm in a zine mod advice doc? 0: I had no idea, could you send me a link? I'm curious!

So, I ran my zine solo and it was my first time running any sort of project like this. It was saddlestitched 30-40 pages (I don't remember exactly; this was several years ago) and we did merch: an enamel pin, a sticker sheet, a die-cut sticker, and two holographic prints. In the end, we made enough money to cover our costs and pay out $6 (approximately) to each contributor, but did not raise enough money to offer complimentary copies of the physical zine/merch. I was aiming to have enough for complimentary copies, which is why I'd call the project a semi-success.

This got long! But here's pretty much all the advice I got:

Know your audience. Is it a fandom zine? How big is the fandom? Original content zines will struggle more to gain interest. How big is YOUR platform, specifically? As lead, the onus is on you to get the word out at the start to attract contributors and potential buyers. Try to gauge how many copies you might sell from this. Lean conservative on your estimate and base your plan on that. (This is where interest checks come in!)

Pick your vendors. Familiarize yourself with the terminology they use. Compare and contrast prices and services using the sales estimate you devised in the last step. How long does shipping take? What is the policy if products come out defective? There are always going to be some defective products when producing en masse. Check reviews. Have you bought zines yourself? Contact the creators of zines you like and ask them which vendors they're using for their assorted products. (I had a great experience with mixam.) Don't forget to look into acquiring packaging and shipping costs (domestic and international)!

Decide how you're going to sell the zine. Kickstarter's great if you're using a vendor that has a set MOQ (minimum order quantity) or if you want to guarantee to be able to provide a certain level of compensation for your contributors, but it also takes a fee and means that, if you don't get enough orders, you have to start the campaign all over again. Bigcartel has more flexibility in terms of sales windows and such, but it's difficult to customize like kickstarter. Also, if you're using bigcartel and don't sell enough, you're on the hook for either refunding or fulfilling all the preorders you do get. You'll also need a stripe and paypal business account.

Make a budget. So you have an estimate of how many you think you'll sell. You know how much your vendors cost. You've accounted for your incidentals (kickstarter fee, packaging, gas to get to the post office, etc). Refer to other zines for what typical prices for your products are and set your prices based on that. (Analyzing what other zines are doing is generally a good idea.) What's the absolute minimum number of sales you need to cover costs? (Fewer orders usually increases production cost.) How many sales do you need to make to compensate your contributors? What will you do if there's excess money? What if it's not enough to split it among your contributors evenly? ($40 is a lot for one person, but it's basically nothing split 30 ways.) Are you going to make stretch goals?

Make a timeline. Interest check, contributor apps, concept submissions (you'll want to know what people are doing before they start working), periodic WIP checks to make sure everyone's on task (there will always be a few people who need to drop out), preorder period, manufacture time, shipping timeline. People will want to know what to expect, especially contributors. Ensure the contributors have plenty of time to work, since, chances are, they're effectively donating their time and effort. Keep in mind major holidays and school schedules; people will need more time if those are happening. Give yourself plenty of pillow space for unforseen issues, so you can stick to this timeline as much as possible throughout the process.

Have the full plan written out for your contributors before they arrive. Be clear and concise. Timeline, expectations in terms of content and behavior, instructions, how you're going to fulfill the zine, expected compensation. Not everyone knows how to prepare an image for print, so include that in your instructions. You're gonna want a discord for this. I also used google forms to manage check-ins and other such things.

Be involved, and COMMUNICATE. Talk to your contributors outside of check-ins. You're their hypeman! Hype them up! Make sure your passion's there for all to see! Nothing, and I mean nothing, kills a project faster than a disinterested/aloof leader. You'll also want to communicate any issues to contributors and buyers asap. It's not embarrassing; people will be patient (mostly) as long as they have communication. Silence is upsetting.

Consider marketing. I've written this as if you're going solo, but these next few bullets is why people usually run zines as a team. Once the contributor team is assembled, that's when you need to hit the bricks. There's a lot of waiting time and you need to gain a potential audience and keep them interested. Marketing is a weak point of mine, so I don't have much advice, but it's critical for the success of a zine. Contributors can advertise a little, but the bulk of that's on you. You'll want an account dedicated to the zine, I can say that much.

Is graphic design your passion? Even if a contributor is designing the cover, what will be on the inner page? The back cover? Do you have any writers contributing fic? That will need formatting. (Do you know how many words fit on a page? It's different depending on the size of the book.) You'll need to make some sort of credits page, or will you put credit information on the same page as each contribution? Quality graphic design can make or break marketing attempts.

Double check your contributors' work. There are going to make mistakes. Most people aren't used to preparing things for print. Having room for bleed (edges of an image that may be cut off during the printing process, or hidden when bound into a book) was a particular issue in my zine. Even if all this is written in your instructions, you'll get files with not enough bleed room, or in RBG (files must be in CMYK for print), or in too low a resolution (300 dpi minimum). Any issues need to be caught, corrected, and all the files compiled for submission to the printer.

Don't forget postage. I mentioned this briefly earlier, but don't forget to account for packaging and shipping in your budget and time. Things like pins can make a slim package too thick and change the postage class. You'll need room in your house to hold the product. You'll want to pack things to ensure nothing's dented or bent. I highly recommend against having a shipping mod, unless it's someone you know and trust very much. I've seen too many projects fall apart because a shipping mod ghosted or stole all the materials or similar issues.

Have a backup plan. What will you do if you only get five people wanting to be contributors? What if you don't sell enough to cover your costs? What if you get bad product? What if you don't hit the MOQ of your chosen vendor, or if they announce a spontaneous price change before you get your order in? Have answers!

Be confident. If you're not used to leadership, it can be weird to have everyone looking to you, but if you've prepared, then there's no reason to be nervous. The people you work with will respond to your energy, so put out those good vibes.

I enjoyed making my zine very much, but also, it was still very much work! I discovered I hate marketing and graphic design, and love the technical bits of arranging the vendors and budgeting and handling the materials. I probably wouldn't go solo again, but I'm glad I did it at least once because it taught me the ins and outs of every aspect. A lot of people, for their first zine, do digital only because, needless to say, physical product is complicated!

If I were to rec One Thing as a starting point for Robin Jason, Batman #408-#429 covers Jason’s main run as Robin and his death arc and is the main essential reading I’d recommend. It’s fairly short and a good place to start imo! 

Among others, it includes his post-crisis origin and first outing as Robin, his first meeting with Dick, the Garzonas incident, and his death and its immediate aftermath in the Death in the Family arc. 

While Jason’s time as Robin in post crisis is fairly short and not as hard to get through as other characters with longer runs, i know Reading Comics Hard so I’ll make a shorter list first, with more recs under the cut!

I’ll be referencing this Jason reading list, since it’s what I followed when I started reading. It can be checked for a more comprehensive list of his appearances too, since I’m not aiming for a full list! (though I might edit it to include more stuff eventually.)

First things first, Jason got rebooted once during his time as Robin; he was originally a circus kid like Dick in pre-crisis (before the reboot), and later in post-crisis got his more well-known origin as the orphan who stole the tires off the batmobile. I’ll be focusing on post-crisis Robin Jason since I’m still reading his pre-crisis run, but the list I linked has more info on that if you’re interested!

Batman #408-#429 - Jason’s post-crisis run as Robin, as mentioned above! The last four issues are the Death in the Family arc. The Batman: Second Chances trade collects a good chunk of these (#408-#416), plus Batman Annual #11 and a couple stories from before Jason’s post-crisis origin.

Detective Comics #568-#582 - Jason’s Robin run in Detective Comics! It’s a fun read and Alan Davis’ art style is very cute imo. (Jason isn’t around from #575 to #578 due to getting hurt in #573)

Batman Annual #10-#12 - More Batman and Robin stories. #12 has a Jason solo story set at his school! 

Batman: the Cult - a 4-issue miniseries where Bruce is kidnapped and brainwashed by a cult. A pretty dark story and one of the last ones from before his death. Jason has some great moments in it!

Dc Retroactive: Batman - The 80s - Story from 2011 written by Mike Barr, who wrote Jason’s 80s Robin stories in Detective Comics!

Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spetacular - One of the stories, More Time, is about Jason and Bruce and goes between the past (with Jason as Robin) and the present (with Jason as Red Hood). Short and very sweet!

Legends (six-part miniseries) - A DC crossover event! Jason has short but great appearances (the time where he breaks his leg, but wants to get up and help anyway).

Nightwing Year One #101-#106 - A rewrite of Dick's Nightwing origin with occasional Jason appearances until #106, which is a retelling of their first meeting where they work together to rescue Alfred. While I have Issues with the characterization of Jason in this, it has some cute moments and I’d be remiss to not include the story that introduces Dick’s nickname of “Little Wing” for Jason.

Stuff dealing with the aftermath of Jason’s death and the impact it left on others. (Some of the stuff here is just listed for a single page or panel rather than a full story about Jason)

Batman #430-#432 + #496 - Bruce in the aftermath of Jason’s death. 

Batman Annual #13 - Jason appears in a flashback.

The New Titans #55 - Dick and the Titans find out about Jason’s death, and Dick confronts Bruce about it.

Batman: Year Three + A Lonely Place of Dying - While these focus on Dick and Tim respectively, they’re set after Jason’s death and show how Bruce is dealing with it. Year Three is in Batman #436-#439 and A Lonely Place of Dying (Tim’s origin story) is in Batman #440/New Titans #60/Batman #441/New Titans #61/Batman #442, also included in reprints of Death in the Family.

Detective Comics #618 - Has a nice little moment of Tim looking up to Jason.

Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #100 - The issue is mainly a Dick origin story, but in the end there’s a sweet and sad story about Jason’s beginning and ending as Robin.

Nightwing Secret Files and Origins - On the first story, Taking Wing, Jason appears to Dick as a dream/hallucination while the latter is having a near-death experience and accompanies him through various of Dick’s memories.

Joker: Last Laugh #6 - The one time when, upon believing Tim was killed and being taunted with Jason’s death, Dick kills the Joker. (the full thing is a six-issue miniseries)

Nightwing (1996) #63 - The aftermath of Dick killing the Joker (though he was revived), but I’m mainly including this for the one panel that shows a picture of Dick and Jason on what seems to be a ski trip.

Batman: Gotham Knights #34 - At the end there’s a story called “The Delusions of Alfred Pennyworth” about Jason’s ghost and Alfred.

Batman: Gotham Knights #43-#45 - Has a flashback to a Barbara and Jason teamup and a recap of Jason’s death as a social worker looks into it and investigates Bruce’s family.

Detective Comics #790 - Bruce talks to Cass about Jason on the day of Jason’s birthday.

Robin V4 #85 - The story itself is about the Joker reflecting on the Robins and Jason only appears briefly, but I think it’s worthwile to include as it’s one of the few times where the involvement of Jason’s mother in his death is acknowledged after Death in the Family. (Also there’s a panel where Jason kicks the joker on the crotch)

Green Arrow V3 (2001) #7 - The one panel where Jason is shown swinging around in heaven :)

Alternate Universes/Other Media

Some stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else/isn’t quite comics/isn’t really canon, but I think is neat and wanted to include!

Letters - letters from readers sent during when Jason was Robin and after his death. They can be interesting to look through to get a sense of how he was seen by readers at the time (there’s even an eulogy by a clergyman!). The ones I’ve seen can be found in this tag, and this post links to a few too (as well as some other info regarding Jason and the vote that led to his death).

The Batman Files - A book that contains several files over various topics and characters across Batman’s history. Among other things, it has Jason’s death certificate. (mainly including this because early on I spent a while trying to find out how old he was when he died)

Tiny Titans #23, #29, #33, #39, #45, #47 - An adorable alternate universe comic in a kid-friendly setting! Jason’s design in it is very cute.

Teen Titans Go! season 6, episode 17 (Egg Hunt) - He doesn’t actually appear, but Jason is namedropped and said to be Batman’s favorite Robin.

Batman And The New Robin (unmade cartoon) - An unproduced animated TV series from the late 80s that would have starred Bruce as Batman and Jason as Robin! No idea how to approach this. Though first things first: English is not my native language and I have some trouble with languages (even my native) [mostly speaking and writing… and understanding (the hearing part but sometime also the meaning part) – okay I just can’t language – sorry] and this thingy here will be long, again – sorry Though I learned to understand written english just so I could read more fanfictions (‘cause the ones in my native language didn’t satisfy me anymore) - spend a whole summer just reading stuff in english and now I *need* to read everything in english and watch things in their native production language (synchro is weird af) and if possible with subtitles (books: if it’s the authors native language; otherwise both languages (german and english) would be translated and then it doesn’t really matter, most of the time anyway)

I think I might be autistic / have adhd ? not sure, going to someone (professional) is not really an option as that would take at least 6 to 12 month to even get maybe a appointment… and it involves a lot of social interaction that would stress all people – even those that don’t have to think about *every* interaction they have with eachother… like no planning or thinking about what you have to say or can’t say and what’s appropriate? Like that is a thing – always wondered how most people got through life when everything is so damn hard. It is apparently a thing that isn’t so quite normal… lol*

Okay, most of the time (that I remember) wondered how that worked for everyone else except me – how they get through life thinking all those things, or well… don’t thinking all those things like HOW?!? Why can you “people”? and I learned it’s important if you’re a girl or not; so yeah, girl here. Followed adhd / autism stuff for a few month / weeks and now again for the last days (it’s an on and off thing). so yeah, I can relate to so much on like everything. Long time I thought, nah, can’t have it: good in school (more so when I was younger but never actually bad), finished school good (though could have been better, if I had studied once (like for my oral exam, I opened the document that should help us learn one whole time, the morning of the exam so yeah, not good at that; brain just goes, heard it once, why should I read this information? Can’t really recall it but while reading I “know” it, so WhAt Is STuDyInG?)) anyway (at this point I would have deleted about everything but like 3 or 4 sentences because… rambling. Sorry, but I think it is important what’s actually going on in my brain; I know it’s hard to read lol) considering all those things I read here (and on other blogs and stuff), I would explain so much about what’s going on in my life (I made a document where I collect all that stuff but it’s redundant sometimes and really messy; try to make a short list with most important things).

Like as a kid, it took me longer than other kids for this social stuff (not like it got “everything”, just enough to communicate more or less lol) or I was so freaking focused on rules; one example is at the train station, there is this line to indicate where you should wait for the train and the other side is where you’re allowed to step once the train is in the station – I lost it, when that rule wasn’t followed (never really big, loud but I was really upset – you know, I learned that it isn’t “allowed” to act out in public). Another thing, I would always get the adults (or kids) around me to speak to others: I mean, I wanted ice cream? Couldn’t order it (still hard to this day – I’m 19 years old btw) or any other basic interaction stuff – I mean I broke every connection to my best friend (in 6th grade, so I was like 10 or 11) because he broke a rule while playing “hide and seek” like yeah, one rule one time while playing and I didn’t speak to him for like 6-7 years (met him at driving school again lol) and I still have his book because I didn’t want anything to do with him anymore (now it’s just awkward to give it back).

As I was younger I loved reading, couldn’t get me away from it – now not so much lol (books or reading in general is so hard sometimes… most of the time) – but that is more like: I lost myself in the books and was super focused on it – now I “don’t have time” as in I can’t really read a book if I don’t have theoretically the whole day and night – cause if I have to do stuff later “there is not enough time to read a book” because I could get lost in it and miss stuff and 5 hours is like 5 minutes, right? (that is a part of “time blindness”, am I mistaken? – never really related to that on a deeper level but the longer it think about it, the more stuff comes to my mind that could be part of it lol / like I always at least try to) get ready when I want to visit my grandparents, it’s like a ten minute walk so I need at least 45 minutes to prepare. Example: want to be there at 14:00 so I should go to the bathroom around 13:15 the latest, bathroom always takes long ‘cause I get distracted, so I then somehow get going around 13:50 – spoiler: I need more like at least 15 minutes not less then 10 to get to my grandparents by foot – and where is the time? I got out of the bathroom somewhere before 13:40 most of the time – I do the exact same things every time and sometimes I’m like: oh, it’s like 13:25/13:30, why would I think I need so much time to get ready? And then most often I need longer – and no, then I start to got even earlier (bathroom is like the first thing in the routine I do before I have to leave the house) and somehow it is now 13:45 and I just leave the bathroom – HOW??)

Okay, MSWord tells me, I have written like almost a 1100 words and haven’t even looked at my 11 page document – sorry (can I even write that many words in an ask at tumblr?)

Another thing I found is RSD – of my god (I usually don’t like to use it like that but omg), that explains so much – don’t want to write too much (missed quite a few “too”s I think lol hope you understand anyway) – I really react so intense to small, constructive criticism and I didn’t (don’t) understand why; and question everything; I remember everything I did wrong (so many “small” things but I’m such bad at human sometimes) and the feels and oh no, I didn’t even do something wrong, my coworker/sort-of-not-really-friend told me how I could have slightly improved what I did: I’m such a bad human, I can’t do anything right and they won’t want to have to do anything with me again – thank you brain, not helpful. One other thing was, like I asked for one weekend of and I wasn’t allowed to take it ‘cause they planned to or already shifted an event (couldn’t really focus on that) to that weekend and I didn’t know it and when they said “no”, in that situation I could have lost it, I was almost in tears (you do not cry in public lol) and thought, how could I even ask that and be soo egoistic (along the lines of that).

This next one is just the text copied from a post but that is like exactly what it is for me:

Found another post with autism signs in adults (that my have been missed as kids), I took out everything I don’t really relate to (like 5 or 6 things lol):

-          may constantly rehears conversations or interactions

-          may feel as though you are always on stage

-          may have a few close friends, not many acquaintances

-          may struggle with other people breaking rules (RULES ARE ABSOLUT – HOW CAN YOU BREAK THEM?)

-          may often fidget, chew, tap, or other repetitive behaviors

-          may get more or less upset at something than is “appropriate”

-          may struggle to adjust when plans change without warning

-          may have routines that don’t seem to have a real purpose

-          may struggle in situations that are unfamiliar

-          may be a very picky eater with few preferred foods

-          may struggle with noises, touching, or sensory input

-          may struggle to process visual or auditory information

-          may struggle to settle body down enough for restful sleep (though I now have a weighted blanket and that’s soo awesome, it really helps at least a bit (don’t wake up that often at night anymore))

-          may struggle to keep track of a fast conversation

-          may take jokes very literally, and not understand teasing

-          may miss sarcasm or subtleties while others are speaking

I understand teasing, I can more or less successful tease and be sarcastic but I’m not sure if people are teasing me. I do not prefer to communicate via text or email. It is still very stressful for me - a telephone is also bad (tone and stuff, not understanding the words correct and not even seeing the other person and in person is also bad – so no to communication and/or interaction lol)

I could provide example for everything but I’m at around 1700 words and just no.

Didn’t really mention sensory stuff, another post I found: “basically, your day-to-day sensory input shouldn’t be causing you distress. sounds wild, i know, but it’s not neurotypical for the stimuli (be it sound, touch, visual, etc etc) you encounter on a day-to-day basis to make you unhappy. also, if busy shopping malls or crowded parties consistently cause you distress or agitation, that’s a neurodiverse thing. it sounds strange, but apparently but yeah, it’s normal for most people to expect to be comfortable in their day to day surroundings.”

Like on one level, I knew it couldn’t be quite “normal” to be always uneasy in “normal” day to day surroundings but like, I can’t understand how people can not find it hard to be in such environment (I heard some enjoy it even, like HOW?).

Random interjection ‘cause I wanted to say something to thing from the beginning: * “Allistics do not “prepare” in order to socialize.  They do not have scripts.  They do not write them, memorize them, or use them.  They just magically know what to say. “ yeah, wow, didn’t realise that for a long time, and it is really magically. But somehow they can; I still ask my mom to help me write emails (more or less important ones) ‘cause it’s hard and she’s always like: “we do it so often, why do you still need help, just write” – not helpful and we didn’t do it actually ‘cause it is a complete different situation now lol every new email is a new thing… I need to think about what to say to the cashier every damn time I’m in the supermarket lol; if I don’t have to talk, someone else orders for me (they thinks I’m lazy or so, I don’t know but it’s so hard and you know what to do, so you can do it lol)

And that executive dysfunction thingy also explains a lot – I mean, I like languages, I’m just not good at that speaking/hearing the words thing – still, I learn Ancient Greek as a sort of hobby (I mean, I learn it for so long now, it’s too late to stop, that would be weird and it is really interesting, just really hard) and I needed like 7 hours to do the work (like, got out of bed, got breakfast, started the computer and did like 30 minutes of working, then did some stuff on the internet for like an hour and then ate my forgotten breakfast, then did some more browsing (I need to do the work cause I have to send it to my teacher this evening lol) some work for like almost an hour, some more phone, a bit of work – and so on. I did some work (but like so many people would have done more or needed less time lol) – anyway I know I really need to work on the language and I just… don’t. arg, that sucks so much, every week I think, I could start doing things on Saturday and then everyday a bit so I have like six days to do some work and every time it’s Thursday and I’m like, lol 10 hours for doing a weeks work. And it’s not like I could focus for that 10 hours – except when I can but sadly it’s almost never on the things I *need* to do. Anyway if my parents hadn’t provided dinner, I wouldn’t have eaten more than breakfast today – anyways sometime I want ice cream or other stuff and I just… can’t do it like I’m sitting here for an hour now, I’m so freaking bored and I just want ice cream but do I move? Nope, and doing something to not feel bored? Nope. I also mean to get my thingy for my wrist ‘cause I have some problems and typing hurts but lol, nope. An example as kid would be I needed hours to dry myself after a shower and just sit on the floor in my room doing more or less nothing or playing (I now a have strategy but yeah)

So, yeah, sorry; I think it’s quite possible that I’m autistic / have adhd, both or so – am I making things up and this is just my mind going a bit wild? (also, I’ve done some online “tests”; most of the time I get like ¾ of the maximal points, but at least always more than half the full points)

Sorry, it’s a messy, long thing but I need a bit of an advice or so – just, like “yeah, could be possible” or “nope.”

Okay, part two (I’m so sorry) (now it is the 21st of August 2020)

There is so much more I can write about: sorry, again like 1300 words.

Like, special interests – I have no idea; as I kid my teacher had to regularly remind me that I have to leave the classroom for break – cause I was so into my book that I didn’t hear anyone leaving the room or the bell; now I can get really invested in some fanfictions (if I have like five days for myself and nothing to do, it is like 3 books without a break) and I’m at a point where I don’t find (good) new stuff and read the same fanfic again and again (I know exactly what will happen and still love it), sometimes I don’t read it for like a few weeks or month and then like 5 times back to back. I absolutely love Doctor Who (but I’m not excessively obsessive or so and don’t know that many facts just some), just can ramble for a few minutes (okay, everyone who would listen speaks German and my main input for Doctor Who is English, so hard to translate that and stuff). Well back to books: I love them; even though I can’t properly focus much these day, I love them, I need them: but why? I hate that when book covers changes or the side of the book like it’s: publisher, name of book, author and the next book is like name of the book, publisher, author and all is mixed up or the symbol of the publisher is slightly different: why? Can’t it be consistent? Why??.

Routines, rituals and stuff. Yeah, I have for example this one street (they repaired the street but there is a small crack now), I have to cross it on the side that is where the street crosses another and then the last 3 steps have to be on the other side and the fourth is stepping on the sidewalk (I really can’t do it any other way and I hate this one car that always blocks the crack a bit – it shouldn’t be standing there ‘cause it’s almost directly in the crossing lol) when I still was going to school, my way home was very specific and one time there was a building/construction site (just some repairs or work on the pipe lines in the ground) and the first time I saw this I was stressed after a long day of school and almost lost it right there and then, because I couldn’t walk my normal way (and yes, at home I cried at bit); for the next few weeks my way back home was hell. I have some specific routines for the bathroom and showering (though most people have that, right?). I have to pack my things and then my stuff like keys and such in the same way every time. When I need a walk I have like two (or three) routes I can take and I have to do them and almost can’t change them after I started (I can though it really throws me off and I don’t feel really well after that). One time – cause Covid-19 and stuff – you need to use a shopping cart where I live in order to enter the supermarket (so you keep more distance) – so, I went to the market by foot and had everything planned, shortly before I am at the store I realise I don’t have a “chip” (thingy you need to use the shopping cart; don’t know if you know what I mean) and I lost it – my plans and routine how I go shopping to that market (if by foot) was ruined – went back home and cried and raged like for an hour (went later again, cause I really needed stuff and I couldn’t leave that thing open, that also feels… not good – had to finish the walking “round”: to the store, store, back home)

One thing I mentioned before: sensory stuff; yeah, not a fan of “loud” noises (it isn’t always the loudness but more the number of noises). Water in my face (nope, hate it, never under the shower and like a sponge or so is horror (like everywhere on my body), just clean water is okay (but please, I can’t have had soap like right before on my hands)), lights is a day to day thing (though if I’m tired / close to what I think is sensory overload, either the room I’m in gets like darker or lights up so much it’s not tolerable anymore (then I know, I really, really have to leave the room and not see or hear anybody anything anymore)), and food, yeah (everything has its place on my plate and please don’t touch), I’m a really “picky” eater and I absolutely despise like cooked or baked fruits (some vegetables too) (they feel soo weird in my mouth… and taste bad… but the texture alone is… really, really bad) (if I wait a bit more, I could think of more but you get the gist I think)

One thing that throws me off: Since I’m 14 years old, I do some stuff with youth groups like mostly work in the church as a volunteer (like in the (school)holidays going a vacation with a group and such things) – I needed like three years (I was and still am seen as shy, mostly) to really “lead” a group (I really am good at imitating the others that can lead a group, I think) and now after I finished school and am doing a “Freiwilliges Soziales Jahr (FSJ)” (voluntary social year) (basically I “work” for a year in a social job (sorry, no idea how to explain it in English) and get not much money (that’s the volunteering-part, but ‘cause I work full-time (38.5 hours a week on paper), I get a bit of money)) – and now I applied for studying for working in a social job – can’t really explain it but important is that I would/will have to work with people and stuff, like my job is to create/plan activities for people (like for example, a meeting every week for old people, free-time activities for teenagers or so). On one level I somehow like that working with people (as long as I know what I do, I had time to plan and everything happens more or less as I imagined/planned), on another level I absolutely… well not hate it… but it is really taxing for me and sometimes I really question myself but then other people say, do it, you’re good at it – and I’m like: yeah? I sometimes feel terrible and have no idea what’s going but okay, good that you don’t see that?! Am I not totally awkward and what? Still, have no clue what I would do instead of that lol (sorry, explained that whole thing real bad; just ask, if something is unclear)

So, two options: either I fake everything I wrote before that last thing and how would that work? Or I’m really good at faking that last thing and how? I have no idea and yeah, I had to write that – can both work? Like, it’s not like that I’m always (really) comfortable doing that social stuff but on the other hand, a bit adrenaline and anxiety makes the life more fun or something like that (and it’s not like, yeay, one time a certain situation managed and the next time I can navigate that somewhat same situation, nope, it’s like nothing ever happened before and that’s… annoying?)

First, I will never, ever, ever judge someone based on how good their English is, whether English is their first language or not.  People communicate the best they can, and that’s all that counts, and it does not matter if it’s “perfect”.

So I can’t address every detail you brought up, because this was a LOT!  I did read all of it though, and the general impression I get is that you’re right, you probably have ADHD, and possibly autism as well, though I am not a doctor and I can’t diagnose you.

You asked a few times if you could be “faking” it, and the answer to that I can say for certain: No, you are not faking.  What you told me here are your life experiences.  I just read a story of “How life is like” for you, and it was not fiction, this is your real perspective about how your brain sees the world.  This is not fake.  This is who you are, and I felt what you wrote was very open and honest, the exact opposite of fake.

Sorry, it’s a messy, long thing but I need a bit of an advice or so – just, like “yeah, could be possible” or “nope.”

Based on your experiences that you shared, I’d say it’s more than likely you have ADHD.  You talk often about trying to complete a task and losing your focus before it’s finished:

This is all very suggestive of ADHD.  You also had some symptoms that could be autism, but it seems like the ADHD is more prominent for you and is affecting you more (keep in mind, I’m only a stranger on the internet, I could be totally wrong).

I’m really happy that you were able to share these thoughts with your grandmother, and that she was open to listening to you about them, even if she didn’t have all the facts.  

I know you said it would be a long wait, and very difficult, to get an appointment with a professional.  But I do really think you should be tested for ADHD.  Maybe your grandmother can help you talk to your mum about it, or maybe your grandmother can make all those phone calls for you (because believe me, I know how difficult it is to make phone calls, they are just as hard for me).  Even if you have to wait a year, it would be worth it to know- and also, because in the case of ADHD, there is medication which can help you.  So it would be really worth it for you to get that, even if you have to wait a long time.

You’re obviously a very detail-oriented, thoughtful person, and I know that you’ve studied this subject inside and out.  You’re not faking, you’re not making it up.  These are your experiences, and they are the truth, and you deserve to be tested if you want to be.

Nice question!! Alright so according to The Subtle Art of not Giving a Fuck, motivation is basically a myth, you don't have to wait to be motivated to do something you just gotta do the thing. You have to bring one foot in front of the other and start, no matter how no matter what you just need to pick up that pen or open MS.Word and begin.. once you start ( even with the slightest smallest tasks ) you will realize it wasn't that hard and you will feel a small push of pride that will give you the 'motivation' needed to finish or to move on to the bigger harder tasks.. also, music is always a great copying tool. You gotta prepare the right playlist to put you in the right mindset but I am not worried about you in that way 🙈 hmmm.. and one of the hacks I do to feel that sense of accomplishment is that I made to-do lists with the simplest tasks like ( turn on the laptop, open MS.word, review paragraph one, edit one page, insert image, make table, etc.. ) and once I start crossing them off I feel like I am actually being productive which gets me to make a real progress.. which btw slow process is still a process.. so yeah that's about it :D

Hey all, thought I’d try my hand at writing a fic since I enjoy reading them so much. I’m going to try to update every day for the first five days just so I can get some sort of masterlist started, and then it’ll drop to updating weekly. Something had to be wrong. You pushed your thumb and forefinger against the bridge of your nose as you closed your eyes against the computer screen’s brightness. The numbers weren’t adding up. No matter how many times you re-counted, you still came up $200 dollars short. You needed the numbers to be wrong.

How in the hell were you supposed to come up with $200 by this weekend? You thought briefly about selling a kidney, but you were pretty sure none of your English Lit major friends knew anyone who’d be buying one.

If only you could work more hours. Around classes and studying, the hours you were able to work in the school cafeteria barely covered your normal expenses, much less any surprises. After that uninsured jerk hit your car two weeks ago, you’d had to get your taillight replaced to avoid any traffic tickets, and your bank account was suffering. You hadn’t eaten anything but ramen and hot dogs in over a week and you were getting sick of taking sponge baths to lower your water bill. While your next paycheck would be enough to cover your utilities, your rent was due in five days and no amount of penny pinching would magically add $200 dollars to your account before then.

With a sigh, you opened up Craigslist and turned to the want ads. Maybe you could sell your couch. Or your dresser; your clothing was usually kept in piles on the floor anyway, right?

You found someone willing to pay $100 for a bed frame – your mattress would work just as well on the floor, right? – and were about to click on it when a listing at the bottom of the page caught your eye.

Well…that was certainly something. You leaned back in your chair and reread the ad. So they weren’t looking for a hooker. But what is wrong with their friend that they felt the need to pay someone to go on a date with him?

A series of quacks from your phone pulled you out of your head and back into the present. You looked at the text and smiled. “Hey sis!” it read, “I saw these flowers and thought of you. Since I can’t give them to you in person I’m sending you a pic.” A picture of your younger brother beaming while holding a fistful of buttercups accompanied the message. You shot back a, “Thank you so much, Jeremiah! They’re beautiful,” with a selfie of your smile and put your phone back down.

Maybe that was it. Maybe their friend had Down syndrome like Jeremiah, or was on the autism spectrum and had a hard time meeting people. You were good with people like that. Maybe you could make enough to cover your rent and make someone’s day at the same time. Hell, with $250, you could even get some food that wasn’t ramen and take a real shower.

Reservations gone, you picked up your phone again and typed in the number. It took you less than a minute to type up your message and hit send. Now all you had to do was hope you made the cut.

“Nat, Sam’s phone dinged! Maybe our ad got a reply!”

Nat shook her head as Clint yelled from the kitchen. She yelled back from her spot curled up on the living room floor, “No one’s answered in the past two days. I told you no one would go for it. It’s a stupid idea.”

Clint poked his head around the corner. “But maybe someone finally did. And if it’s such a stupid idea, why’d you join the money pool to pay for it?”

Nat sighed. “Because Steve’s never gonna find his own date, no matter how many suggestions I feed him. Check to see if it’s a reply or just a regular text.”

“I can’t. Sam changed his password after Bucky changed his phone background to that picture of Fluttershy and he won’t tell me what it is now.”

“Fine, toss it here.” Nat caught it easily and put in the new password.

“Hey, how come he told you but not me?”

“Because I’m not the one who told Bucky what it was last time.” Nat pulled down the notification so she could read the first bit. She cocked an eyebrow. “Well, whadda ya know. We did get a reply.”

Clint hopped over the back of the couch and peered over her shoulder. “I wanna see! I wanna see!”

“Hello,” the text read, “my name is Y/N, I’m 22, and I’m replying to your craigslist ad. I’m replying because I want to help your friend have a really nice evening, and if I’m being completely honest also I need money for my rent that’s due Saturday.”

“Where’d my phone go?” Sam called out from the kitchen.

“It’s in here! Our ad got a reply!” Clint called out, bouncing up and down like a little kid. “Her name is Y/N, and she –”

“Let him read it himself,” Natasha interrupted. Sam came into the room and she passed him his phone. Clint kept bouncing as Sam took his time with reading the text.

“What should we text her back?” Sam asked, looking at Nat.

“I think –”

“I’m asking Nat, Clint. You have terrible ideas.”

“Hey,” Clint pretended to pout. “I came up with the idea for the post, didn’t I? That was a good idea.”

Sam shook his head. “Finding Steve a date on Craigslist is not a good idea, even if it does end up working. It’s just a better idea than anything Tony came up with.”

“Well, from the little bit we know about her, Y/N seems nice,” Nat interrupted Clint before he could protest. “She might be a little young, but Steve’s old enough that we knew that would happen. I’d say we give her a chance. It’s not like we’ve been swamped with replies, and Tony already made reservations at the restaurant for this weekend.”

“Done,” Sam said, drafting a reply.

You jumped when your phone quacked less than 15 minutes after sending your text. It’s okay. I’m sure it’s just Jeremiah. You checked your notification. Nope, not Jeremiah.

You smiled as you read the text. “Hi, Y/N,” it started, “thank you for your reply. You sound like a sweet person, and honesty is a great quality that definitely isn’t going to disqualify you. If you’re sure you’d like to do this, I’ll give you the date details. My name’s Sam, btw.”

Your heart was beating as you sent your affirmation. This time it only took two minutes for Sam to reply.

“Be at Daniel on E. 65th at 6:45 this Friday. I’ll meet you out front and pay you before it starts. Your date will be there at 7; his name is Steve. Don’t worry about prices; everything is covered. If you don’t have an appropriate dress, we can arrange one for you. Let me know if you need anything.”

You suddenly realized you had stopped breathing. Daniel was classy and expensive. If they could afford that for two people, no wonder they could pay you $250 for showing up. Good thing your mother had bought you that dress when you were home last break. “Y/N, you never know when you’ll need a formal dress, and by the time you know, it may be too late to buy one.” With a quick text to Sam confirming you got his message and wouldn’t need a dress, you went to your closet. Friday may be four days away, but you wanted every bit of your outfit planned beforehand.

-          0:25 Morality popping up all excited. “Amazing!”

-          0:27 This is immediately followed by the three others making noises of disagreements and you can tell that Anxiety isn’t alone for once on a topic. Thomas picks up on this and figures that this must mean something bad.

-          0:33 It looks like Anxiety barely hid a smile as he said nice, but it might have been my imagination. He glances around as if he’s unsure that they are actually agreeing. “I’m not alone on this one? Nice.”

-          0:45-0:58 When Anxiety is being all menacing, Logan cuts in and takes what he’s saying literally and so quickly reassures him that that’s not the problem here (in the literal sense), making Anxiety explain himself. It breaks his harsh negativity for a second. Once it clears up, he agrees.

-          0:59 Roman takes the time to show that he still does not like Anxiety, the darker side seems exasperated with the nicknames. He’s also resigned to them, but doesn’t appear to be too offended by it. “How many of those have you got?”

-          1:04 Princey looks as if though he’s disappointed in himself when he tells Thomas that they haven’t accomplished their dreams. Kind of like he blames himself… *coughs*

-          1:08 Logan participating in the animal noise association game instinctively. Patton even points to him because he knows Logic will do it. The seriousness is replaced with a brief few seconds of banter and it’s just heart-warming okay? “Baa.”

-          1:18 Logic having a list on things Thomas needs to improve on. It fills up multiple pages and he even goes far as to mention that he has included detail on it. Makes me wonder if he keeps lists on everything. How many does he have? “Oh those are just the categories, we haven’t even gotten into specifics yet.”

-          1:33-1:50 Anxiety getting to go off on his negative spiel without being interrupted by Logic or Prince until Morality stops him. (Unlike the others, he doesn’t tell Anxiety to shut up or insult him, but I digress.) Patton makes the slightest of jabs at him, but it doesn’t seem to be intentional or aimed to harm Anxiety, more so to reassure Thomas. “I know we tend to overthink a couple of things.”

-          2:10-2:18 Morality doesn’t sound as if though he’s taking Thomas seriously, but I feel like that’s also unintentional. He’s probably trying to lighten the mood the way he normally does it because it usually works. He also confuses the word adultery again. “Look who needs another lesson in adultery!” “For the last time, that is not right.” “I’m sorry, look whom needs another lesson in adultery.”

-          2:27 Prince admits to thinking about Thomas’ friends and their accomplishments and comparing that to their own. He’s worried because like the others, he wants what he thinks is best for Thomas. In his mind, that would be making sure Thomas doesn’t fall behind achievement-wise. “When comparing yourself to your friends and what they’ve accomplished, how do you stack up?”

-          2:34 Anxiety makes a joke (albeit a negative one) without thinking in response to Morality’s. This messes with my Anx and Mo friendship theory a little, but Morality isn’t shown having a negative reaction so… “Like pancakes, you fall flat.”

-          2:48-3:03 Patton steps in when Thomas is getting picked apart by the others. He’s quick to support him whilst, once again, not insulting a particular side (harshly/personally). *coughs aggressively*

-          3:06 When Logic is in… wherever Morality put him, you can see ‘LOGAN IS THE BEST TEACHER’ scrawled on the whiteboard. Seeing as this is Morality’s imagination, I assume that he wrote that there. The rest of the doodles on the board is cute also.

-          3:44 Thomas has done all of those scenarios Patton shows. I’m kind of curious about that shirt one. Especially since it looked like Thomas was just about to collapse before it moved on to the next scene. “They were all real events in my life.”

-          3:54-4:04 Anxiety seems approving of Thomas staying up until 5am as long as it has a cool name. When Logic tells him that neither the “witching” nor the “devil’s” hour is at 5am, he doesn’t see the point in staying up that late (early?). What else would he do as long as it had a cool name? “Well then it’s just 5am and you need to go to bed.”

-          4:58 Roman expresses extreme disgust at Thomas not watching his shirt. Perhaps he’s the one who hates dirt/germs the most out of the sides? That does make sense considering he’s a prince, although I would’ve thought it’d be Logic. “Did you ever wash that shirt? You’re wearing it right now.” “I did not.” “Ewww!”

-          5:07-5:17 Logan shuts down Patton when he suggests that what they do is a playful banter thing. Prince outright says that he’s the problem. Anxiety makes another negative joke/observation but also joins in. “I love this playful teasing, back-and-forth that we do!” “No, I am serious.” “You are holding Thomas back!” “His heart’s just not in the right place.”

-          5:18 Logan takes Anxiety literally again. There was a theory that it was so Anxiety is forced to explain himself and how he thinks, making it easier to understand the problems, which I like. “Again, that is not the issue. Anatomically, Thomas is fine.”

-          5:41 Thomas snaps at Patton, who is surprised. Morality apologises softly, and it sounds like his voice cracks slightly. He also looks like he’s about to cry, or at least nearing that point. “That’s just it, I’m not a ‘kiddo’ anymore!”

-          5:54 Logic and Prince start teaming up against Morality more noticeably now. Anxiety keeps quiet, looking between the two. He doesn’t seem to approve of their actions at all.

-          6:38-6:46 Anxiety doesn’t find it appropriate when Roman goes off on a Disney spiel at that time. Of course, this could have just been his hatred of Disney showing, but it seemed like he was just being mindful of Patton and kind of resented Prince slightly for being so joyful whilst picking on another. “No Mulan lyrics right now, man, come on.” / “Into the Woods is not better!”

-          7:21 Anxiety completely avoids insulting Morality at all at this point, instead he chooses to keep Logic and Prince at bay. “Okay, pocket protector.”

-          8:28-8:36 & 10:49 Logic is protective over his ‘look’. Despite having told Thomas to wear it, he doesn’t like it on him. “This… This is just my look, you stole my look.” / “Plus I wear it so much better than you. Objectively.” / (much later) “Careful with it. Careful!”

-          8:39-8:46 Logan then dabs and you can see Anxiety just go ‘wHAT’. “Is no one going to acknowledge that he just dabbed?”

-          8:47 Morality, the heart, is (forgive my wording) broken-hearted over the fact that Thomas decides to give up the things he love. I don’t mean to fuel the angst writers here, but like, what if Patton fades the longer Thomas goes without enjoyment? “But you’re giving up all the things that you love!”

-          9:14-9:33 Logan takes into consideration that Thomas isn’t happy with the changes. He goes so far as to admit that he was wrong, and proceeds to figure out that Morality’s opinion is needed to find out how to solve this. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. “Morality? What are we doing… wrong?”

-          9:49-10:05 Thomas quickly realises that he can’t give up everything that he and Morality love and says such, making Patton smile again. “I can’t sacrifice everything you bring to the table.”

-          10:58 Roman, too, apologises in his own way. “That is – wow, I am ashamed of myself.”

-          11:03 Anxiety jumps in. He says that he thought of exactly what Thomas was saying when defending Morality, but brushes it off, using his ‘I’m lazy’ excuse. He might not have wanted the others to bombard him with insults if he were to defend Morality back then? Either way, he doesn’t fool me, that softie. “I was gonna bring that up… but it would have been too much work.”

-          11:39-11:54 Roman teleports them into the first “mind palace” which is just an empty white oasis. Anxiety isn’t used to the sudden light change and is physically bothered by it. Roman fixes his mistake and then the background changes to a new setup. Each little spot corresponds to a side’s own interests/personality.

-          12:02 Anxiety makes a Winnie the Pooh reference when Morality points out that there’s something specifically for Anxiety, which is just really sweet. “Thanks for noticing me.”

-          12:14-12:23 Everyone compliments Morality apart from Anxiety who seems to really love his corner. Anx monologues for a bit, which is both funny and cute, that edgy emo whom I love. “Small, dark and empty… like the cavity where my heart would be… if I had one…”

-          12:24-12:36 No one wants to talk about their issues. Instead, Prince, Logic and Anxiety choose to sink out. Anx wishes Thomas a “happy birthday” with no malicious intent. Notably, he’s the only one who does this throughout the whole video.

24. do you want to change your name: Nop, I’m Karla Belén and that’s how family calls me, but other people call me just Karla or Belén or derivations of those two. My closest friends call me Kiwi or Kabe. My teachers used my last name and all my doctors call me Belito. I love my name cause some people has take their valious time to make nicknames or they call me in a certain way cause maybe a thing I’ve made reminds them of something specific and I’m okay with that, so no, I don’t want to change my name.

25. what did you do for your last birthday: I was at my uncle’s house, the whole day we traveled with my parents to the capital, and when we arrived my aunt had cooked fried chicken. It was very simple but my dad let me drive a little bit and my mom was in a good mood, so it was really cute.

85. favourite movie: El 49. In 1949 a earthquake shake and destroyed my city. Help was sent from all the country and from close countries but it never came. People with power taked those things and made total empires using all the provitions. But my city didn’t give up. People that lost everyting worked harder that ever and the next year the city was reconstructed and since that year we celebrate on February the FFF (Fiesta de las Flores y de las Frutas) that means Flower and Fruit Festival. I love that movie cause reflects all the pain of those poor citizens but the determination of the ambateños (My city is called Ambato, do the math).
