12:30 I’m here to spread some Curly Johnny Ponyboy friendship based on what I used to do with old friends.
They’re all pretty chill with affection, especially with those they’re comfortable with. So sometimes they’ll go down to the lot and Ponyboy will lean against Johnny, and Curly will just… stand there before eventually sitting on Pb’s other side and very slowly start to lean against him as well (he will deny purposefully initiating any kind of affection till his last breath). And then they all just talk absolute trash about people. 3 boys alone for hours what will they do: make fun of people. Sometimes it’s strangers, sometimes it’s people from their school, sometimes it’s other buddies; nobody’s safe.
Sometimes Curly’ll come by the lot just to see if Ponyboy’s there yet, though he doesn’t just ditch if it’s only Johnny. I mean, he did, but then it got kind of weird to interact with the guy you very obviously ignored a handful of times. Those two are awkward as hell without Ponyboy being their middle ground in conversations, but they become actually acquainted with the other through these accidental lot-meetups. At least, as much as you can with how quiet Johnny is
On weekends, sometimes they try to push the curfew and go out to places like the Dingo, or the park, or sometimes they simply walk around for a while after dark. They make fun of and poke at and tease each other, sometimes giving out stupid dares just for laughs. And sometimes they will all just sit and smoke, ranting about their problems not because they’re inherently overwhelming at the moment, but because the others will listen.
During lunch periods, if Curly’s set on the idea enough, he’ll get Ponyboy and Johnny to ditch for a bit and they go off behind the school building to waste the period away. One time they walked off and found a storage/ water tank some ways away and they climbed onto it. Curly lost a ring on it and they ended up spending the rest of their time there trying and failing to find and grab it.

SODAPOP:
-I swear he's ADHD incarnate. I know he wouldn't have gotten diagnosed with it but still.
-adrenaline junkie menace!!! Drag races, fights, horse back riding (back when it was possible), hell. He may even try bungee jumping if given the chance.
-I dont know why. But I have a gut feeling he may be terrified of centipedes specifically.
-Absolutely wanted to work with horses but. The money with those wasnt as good as if he worked at the gas station full time. And it wasn't exactly like a high school drop out could become a vet or something.
-Very touching Feely with all of his friends. He may not openly talk about his negative emotions much but by the gods I can see him basically constantly leaning on someone or showing other forms of platonic appreciation for his buddies
-I know S E Hinton said he didnt end up dying in Vietnam butttt..I like to say he at least was drafted. Even if he survived it he probably got some messed up injuries and..he wasnt himself for a very long time.
-*He* can call himself dumb, but when other people do it he gets a little insecure.

New AU drop.. Two-Bit is 16 (everybody’s 2 years younger than book age) and new to Tulsa..The rest of the group’s already established.
Lmk if I should continue and give feedback please!! I REALLY WANT THIS TO BE IN CHARACTER AND WOULD ESPECIALLY APPRECIATE FEEDBACK ON THAT
(Warnings: abuse mentions, smoking, violence in general)
Ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/58531948/chapters/149116588#main
New schools weren’t anything new, and he’d always known he’d move. Two-Bit knew he’d move again. His mom had a habit of trying to get them a new start, each time with a new guy. They weren’t so bad every time, but sometimes they tried to smack him or his mom around. Having to stay for the money wasn’t great. His mom promised they’d get out soon, but it never seemed to be soon enough. His mom promised they’d stay, and they were out.
So when he walked into the school, immediately blinded by the lights, as usual, he didn’t expect anything new.
There was introductions to each class, because he’d gotten there in the middle of the year. Nearly everyone laughed, and he knew the teachers had him pegged as a troublemaker. If he set the bar low enough, he’d barely have to try, and other kids would like him.
He liked school well enough, even if he hadn’t had a solid group of friends there, closer to lunch buddies, somebody he could smoke with or something. It was better to be seen as someone funny, with a place. At home, he was a nervous kid with shifty eyes and quick reflexes who had to keep it together.
As he sat down behind a boy with dark hair, styled with clear care, he wondered if Susie was doing alright.
The teacher immediately called him out, asking him a question to a math problem he didn’t know the answer to. His eyebrow raised. “I don’t know. I thought school was for learning.” She didn’t entertain him. He could practically hear what she was thinking. ‘I’ve dealt with your sort before,’ or something.
“The office is down the hall. I don’t suggest doing this again. This isn’t my first day teaching.” Her voice held no room for argument. He held the smile up, mildly amused as he sauntered out. When he’d gotten there, he plopped down on a chair. At least he knew he’d fit in. People seemed to find him funny, even if they didn’t like anything else about him. The thought made him frown.
Eventually, he got out of there after getting the same old talking to. ‘You have such a good future ahead of you, don’t mess it up,’ and the like. Interrupting his thoughts, the bell rang, and nearly everyone had gone to class. He knew he’d rack up tardies, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. The day was over before he knew it, and he strolled out.
Everybody there was walking with somebody. It made his gut churn, but he told himself he didn’t care, even if any connection he had with anyone was shallow, no matter where he went.
The walk home wasn’t terrible regarding its length, relatively short compared to some of his homes. His mom would’ve let him use the car, but her new boyfriend had crashed it and they didn’t have the money to fix it yet.
All of a sudden, he heard wailing.
He was smart.
You don’t go into an alley alone.
But it sounded like a kid. Suddenly, he looked, like somebody’d look at an auto wreck. He couldn’t have been older than Susie, eyes wide and scared. He didn’t realize he’d gotten out his switchblade until he heard it click.

HELP why does neil gaiman talking about crowley/aziraphale sound like a less letigious se hinton when people talk about the outsiders being gay
Honestly and this is probably the supernatural in me talking where they would ban you from cons forever for saying destiel and publicly humiliate you if you said destiel but I think his Previous Statements On The Matter are fine. I well and truly respect being asked about gay people and going that’s not what I wrote, but if that’s your takeaway, that’s lovely. I’m glad that it makes you happy. That’s a Respectable Stance to me esp when it’s complicated by the fact that the gay people in question are your self inserts with your buddy. However. The lgbt all at once stance. The of course I intended them to be non-binary from the start stance. The yes it’s a love story it always was stance. The actually it’s more woke if they don’t touch or kiss or talk about their relationship at all stance. AFTER! He is WEL DOCUMENTED! On THE RECORD! As that gay shit is in your head. Well that’s when I start kicking and kicking and kicking forever

no dally and darry friendship/frenemyship is soooo important to me. every interaction they have im obsessed. wut r u hc about them? i feel like the distance comes from darry wanting tb w the socs imo.
oh anon they're so special to me. i have so many thoughts about them across all sources but i’ll focus mostly on them in the musical for now bc i assume that's what ur asking about.
i definitely feel like their divide comes from a mix of darrys attachment to the socs (like u said), their age difference, and him taking up so much responsibility so suddenly. of course i can't forget se hinton constantly tweeting that darry did not want to be and was not considered a part of the gang 😭. dally would probably think darry was wasting how strong and intimidating he was!!
more than anything tho i think their distance comes from jealousy on darry's part. he wants to be pony's brother but he can't be because he has to be his parent. so he starts resenting dally, who still has that kind of relationship with pony. darry wishes he could let pony have more fun and get in trouble and be a reckless kid but he can't afford to, and dally is encouraging the very kind of behavior that puts darrys guardianship in jeopardy. and darry cannot support that bc his brothers will always come first!! dally doesn't understand (at least not to the full extent) why darry has to be so strict and no nonsense.
that is, until little brother. where dally finally realizes what it means to be a big brother and sees firsthand why darry was being so protective and strict about ponyboy; because pony and johnny– and by association darry and dallas– could have easily switched places. darry criticizes dally and says that he's only “playing the part” of a brother and he's right. that song is the first time dally realizes the pain that comes alongside feeling responsible for someone and failing them.
WHICH LEADS ME TO MY FINAL POINT. one of my Favorite details in the movie is that dally asks for DARRY SPECIFICALLY before his death. that is such an important scene to me and carries a lot of implications about their friendship that you don't really see before then and i think it's such an interesting detail to add. it tears me upppppp that there's no such implication in the show and the only time darry mentions dally's death he does it with a bit of malice. no matter how much he disliked dally in the musical, i can't imagine him not being so deeply impacted by the fact that he's lost another person in his life in a very similar manner to how he lost his parents. all in all, i think their dynamic is much more interesting as "ex friends who fell out due to uncontrollable circumstances" as opposed to "rivals who have always inexplicably hated each other".
tldr: please please please please why can't they have one little hug. A Handshake even. exchange a Singular smile. i just want them to be buddies 😞

9, 13, and 20
9. What’s the favourite scene/moment from the book?
Probably the part in the morning after Pony gets home from Windrixville, where the gang’s just relaxing and horsing around- it lends some much-needed lightness to a pretty heavy book. That or the train-hopping, although that one’s mostly because I’ve always wanted to ride on a freight train, ala “On the Road”. There’s one by my house and lemme just say it’s been tempting me pretty much my whole life. I guess I also like the drive in, when Two-Bit talks to Cherry and Marcia- it was just just fun to read, I like Two-Bit.
I think the Johnny/Dally death scenes were obviously some of the most well-written and impactful, but I can’t outright say they’re my favorites because the whole time they were happening I wanted them to not be happening. Loved them though from a technical standpoint. You see so much of the characters and who they are- ugh it’s so well done.
13. Who do you think is the most well-written character?
Maybe Ponyboy or Dally? Idk Ponyboy just feels very genuine, which I guess makes sense since Hinton says he’s probably the character who’s most like her. And then with Dally- I mean it’d be easy to soften his edges in hopes of writing someone more likeable, but she chose not to and I think that’s a huge part of why his character is so meaningful. I really like Pony’s line about how Dally’s “Too real” and how that scares him.
But really I do think all of the characters are solidly written- especially Randy who I think is kinda underrated? I mean I don’t think about him often, but I love the scene where he calls Pony “Grease” and then is like “Wait, I mean kid.” I do wish we got more Cherry- she was well-written too, but we see so little of her…
Idk, I think they’re all well-written. Even characters without much to them on a surface level feel like real people, and it makes the world feel so lived-in and real. Like my boy Steve- there’s not a ton outright said about him, but he still feels like a real person with real depth. And don’t even get me started on the Shepards- the little details really flesh them out, even with hardly any screen time.
20. Which character do you relate to most?
  Steve or Soda I think.
Steve because even though we don’t canonically get much of him, we do get a few things, like how he’s cocky and observant and competitive and has a rocky relationship with his dad lol. And then in the movie he does a lotta stuff I’ve done and even looks kinda like me- kinda short, gap-toothed, dark haired, scowls a lot. I’ve currently got a pretty nasty bruise on my knee from front-flipping off a couch, and another one on my arm from rough-housing with a buddy. And irl I know I often come off as bad-tempered the way he does, although I don’t really mean to. This one’s more fanon than canon, but we’ve even both got Napoleon complexes lol- I mean the fact that I like him so much is absolutely just projecting, I’ll admit that, but idk I like him and think he’s pretty relatable. I get the whole “fighting ‘cause you’re angry” thing, as well as the beefing with fourteen year olds thing-which I’m kinda ashamed of- but I swear to god fourteen year olds know how to push my buttons in ways no one else does. (well. Except for…everyone. I guess. I just have a lot of specific experiences with smartass fourteen year olds that I’m still mad about to this day.)
(5’6 isn’t that short Malcom, shut the hell up. You’re just freakishly tall for a freshman.)
Admittedly I didn’t think much about Steve until I took @boysborntodie’s “Which greaser are you” quiz and got him, which I was initially irritated at because I thought he wasn’t much of a character…but then the description in the results was so on the money that I got a little unsettled lol. Point is, Steve’s probably my “official most relatable character”.
And then with Soda, I’ve got a similar experience of being good-looking but not feeling very secure in my brains…which is conceited to say I know, but enough people talk about my looks that I’m aware of the fact that it’s just objectively true that folks like my face. Unfortunately it means I kinda rely too much on it, and often end up worrying that there isn’t much more to me then that. Like I’ve had multiple girls who’ve dated me because I’m good-looking but then don’t really like who I am, you know? It gets to me sometimes. Not often, but sometimes. I could see myself ending up in a relationship with someone like Sandy, although unlike Soda I don’t think I’d still wanna marry her afterwards- I love Soda, but I can’t say I relate to that part so much. (‘Course this is all hypothetical, so really who knows what I’d do?) And I’ve definitely got a worse temper than Soda does, I admire his lack of one honestly lol
I do feel like I ought to relate more to Darry, to be honest though. I mean, I’m the oldest son with two younger siblings, and a decent amount of responsibility- but I just don’t relate to him much. But then again, I’m in vastly different circumstances- Me and my sister are more like Soda and Ponyboy than Darry and Soda. Mostly because we both get to be kids still.
Anyhow, thanks for asking! I know I’ve written a lot- I just have a lotta thoughts and like to hear my own voice I guess lol. And lemme know what thoughts y’all have about these questions, I’d love to hear it!!

"I like being around people like that. Like Steve and Soda. Buddies who are so close that they don't even need words, and when they do, they'll say the same exact ones."
Catching up on the dynamic with Pony and Darry. They're making it work. Where's Dal been at this whole time anyway? The brothers are chillin + Steve. Physical assult on Sodapop.

Steve and Paulster are sitting next to each other making out on the couch. Paulster rubbed Steve’s pregnant belly as they did so.
“I love you Stevey-poo,” Paulster said.
“I love you more, my Pauly-wauly. You’re such a great kisser,” Steve said.
Suddenly, they felt something wet on the couch. Paulster got up and examined the wet spot.
“Stevey-poo, did you have an accident again?” Paulster asked.
Suddenly, it all clicked in Steve’s head. He was expected to go into labor any day now…
“N-no…I…I think my water broke…” Steve said quietly.
“Oh no! We need to take you to the hospital!” Paulster jumped up from the couch and raced out the door with Steve in tow. They drove like a madman, Steve shrieking in the passenger seat. The hospital was three hours away, so they needed to go fast. Paulster ran over a few people, killing them, and then stopped at a red light.
“OH MY GOD! IT’S COMING OUT!” Steve screamed. “NOOOO!”
“Hold it in!” Paulster said. “The hospital’s only 2 hours and 45 minutes away! You can make it!”
“I CAN’T HOLD IT IN! I’M GIVING BIRTH!”
“Well then stop it. That’s not very sigma of you,” said Paulster as he gave Steve a bombastic skibidi side eye. Steve roared as he pushed one last time.
“RAAAAAAAAH! SKIBIDI! SKIBIDI FORTNITE!” yelled Steve.
A baby popped out of him and fell on the car seat, then rolled off and landed on the floor.
"WAAAAAAAH! WAAAAAAAAH!"
“Gosh darn it…now our baby’s gonna have brain damage. Just like you, Stevey-poo,” said Paulster as he picked up the baby by the scruff of its’ neck and threw it out the car window. “Ew. Why is it so ugly? I guess it inherited your ginormous nose…”
“How about we make another baby? And make sure it’s prettier this time…” Paulster said slyly.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Steve grinned.
Everyone’s so creative! 😧

Quotes from The Outsiders that stuck with me...WARNING:SPOILERS:
This is basically THE OUTSIDERS quotes that stick with me and that are my favorite. There also are some quotes with some Curtis brother love and appreciation:)) In no order BTW.
"Soda just put his hand on my shoulder. "Easy, Ponboy. They ain't gonna hurt you no more.""(Hinton, 08).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I would. I'd help her and Randy both, if I could. "Hey," I said suddenly, "can you see the sunset real good from the West Side?" She blinked, startled, then smiled. "Real good." "You can see it good from the East Side, too." I said quietly. "Thank, Ponyboy." She smiled through her tears. "You dig okay." She had green eyes. I went on, walking home slowly." (Hinton, 130).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Dally raised the gun, and I thought: You blasted fool. They don't know you're only bluffing. And even as the policemen's guns spit fire into the night I knew that was what Dally wanted. He jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled with a look of grim triumph on his face. He was dead before he hit the ground. But I knew that was what he wanted, even as the lot echoed with the cracks of shots, even as I begged silently-Please, not him. . .not him and Johnny both-I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted." (Hinton, 154).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
""Darry!" I screamed, and the next thing I knew I had him around the waist and was squeezing the daylights out of him. "Darry," I said, "I'm sorry. . ." He was stroking my hair and I could hear the sobs racking him as he fought to keep back the tears. "Oh, Pony, I thought we'd lose you. . .like we did Mom and Dad. . ." That was his silent fear then- of losing another person he loved. I remembered how close he and Dad had been, and I wondered how I could ever have thought him hard and unfeeling. I listened to his heart pounding through his T-shirt and knew everything was going to be okay now. I had taken the long way around, but I was finally home. To stay." (Hinton, 98-99).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
""I'm pretty bad off, ain't I, Pony?" "You'll be okay," I said with fake cheerfulness. "You gotta be. We couldn't get along without you." The truth of that last statement hit me. We couldn't get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason. "I won't be able to walk again," Johnny started, then faltered. "Not even on crutches. Busted my back." "You'll be okay," I repeated firmly. Don't start crying, I commanded myself, don't start crying, you'll scare Johnny." (Hinton, 121).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
""You want to know something, Ponyboy? I'm scared stiff. I used to talk about killing myself. . ." He drew a quivering breath. "I don't want to die now. It ain't long enough. Sixteen years ain't long enough. I wouldn't mind it so much if there wasn't so much stuff I ain't done yet and so many things I ain't seen. It's not fair. You know what? That time we were in Windrixville was the only time I've been away from our neighborhood." "You ain't gonna die.""(Hinton, 121-122).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
""We're all proud of you, buddy." Johnny's eyes glowed. Dally was proud of him. That was all Johnny had ever wanted. "Ponyboy," I barely heard him. I came closer and leaned over to hear what he was going to say. "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold. . ." The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died. You read about people looking peacefully asleep when they're dead, but they don't. Johnny looked dead. Like a candle with the flame gone. I tried to say something, but I couldn't make a sound. Dally swallowed and reached over to push Johnny's hair back. "Never could keep that hair back. . .that's what you get tryin' to help people, you little punk, that's what you get. . . " Whirling suddenly, he slammed back against the wall. His face contracted in agony, and sweat streamed down his face. "Damnit, Johnny. . ." he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will. "Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die. . ." He suddenly bolted through the door and down the hall."(Hinton, 157-158).

I love you all and Stay Gold~
