“So Kerry.. what the fuck happened?”

Kerry turned to face his old friends in confusion, before his eyes immediately went back to his groom. V was talking to Judy, a light in his eyes he had been afraid was gone forever.

“The first time we met him, there wasn’t much.. love I guess. I just assumed this was fling.” Denny explained, Nancy nodding in agreement. Kerry forgot about that honestly. So much shit happened after that day he forgot he had told them V was his input at the time. Now that he thought about it, they saw him interacting with Johnny and not V.

He wasn’t quite sure how to explain that, or if V wanted to business told.

“Well.. I’ll be honest. He wasn’t my input at the time. He had broken into my house with a message.” Nancy sat up, concern crossing her face. Denny just shook her head like this wasn’t a surprise. Maybe Kerry should have been offended. But he knew this was the least weird person he’s ever slept with. He did also sleep with Johnny so the bar was really low.

“Why do I get the feeling that’s not the true story?” Nancy asked, and she was right. It wasn’t true and she was way too observant.

“Because it’s not. But you wouldn’t me believe if I told you. I barely believe the full story.” That had been a rough night.. but Kerry never expected Johnny would just plop his future husband into his lap. Maybe Johnny hadn’t expected this.

“I mean, it’s just funny is all. You seemed like you could barely look at him and now you can’t stop staring him.” That was true. Kerry hadn’t taken his eyes off of V for more than five seconds tonight. But really, could anyone blame him. Dancing and laughing with his friends. Enjoying life the way he should have been all along. He definitely took something during one of the few times Kerry wasn’t looking, and Kerry was surprisingly sober. He just.. didn’t want this night to blend in with others.

“Ker!” Nancy called teasingly, getting Kerry’s attention away from his groom once more. The look on his face nearly sent her flying. It was a look of genuine happiness. Something he hadn’t had in fucking decades. When she had first met V, she hadn’t been sure what to think of him. Then the interaction at the concert told her it hadn’t been real. Maybe a fan getting his rocks off and Kerry going through another crisis.

But as the young merc sat down next to Kerry, clearly a bit fucked. He looked at Kerry with genuine love in his eyes, like he was the only person in this room worth looking at. This V was different than the one they had met. Maybe because of stress, maybe Kerry had paid him, she didn’t know. He had been sick when they met, she knew that much. He had looked it, for a moment sounded like it. He had felt so familiar though.. she had shaken the feeling off.

Now he was bright. If not a bit shy to be this way in their presence. It was cute, the way he tucked into Kerry a bit, whispered something to him that had her friend grinning. A grin that said they’d be leaving early. Kerry downed the rest of the drink and stood, his merc following.

To her surprise, Kerry came over and kissed her cheek. Just like he used to. Denny tilted her head expectantly and Kerry kissed her too.

“Thank you, for coming and for everything.” He whispered to Nancy. She knew Kerry probably wouldn’t even be here if not for her in the beginning. “Love you, Ker.” Denny called.

“Love you girls too! See ya.” He took his new husband’s hand and dragged him through the crowd. The women smiled at each other. Typical Kerry.

i am a butch now but i don’t know whether that’s true or not anymore. i want to take T, but at what point am i actually just a trans man? have you question that line in the sand at all yet?

I can only talk from my perspective on this, others may differ, and thats because "whats the difference between a butch on T and a trans man" is such a new sociological concept that its basically in the very beginnings of its infancy. its SO new, and neither Butch nor Trans Man nor Trans Masc have secure, well established roots as social identities or concepts. It may seem like they do and it may seem like there are rules or lines that are firm, but when you step back, zoom out, and consider them in the context of broader society (and especially compared to the idea of a Man and Woman), they do not. These are social contructs that are actually very early in their construction, and we are doing the constructing like, right now, within this ask.

That said, I can tell you why I don't identify as a trans man fairly easily: I don't care about men or the idea of a man. "Man" as a static concept is like... I don't know what that is. Its almost alien to me.

Now, to ramble that point out:

I have considered if I'm a man throughout my life. The closest I've been to identifying as a man was when I was in a period in my life when I considered that there was at least an aspect of me that was drawn to Manhood. Also, as I came to be read as a man in my public life, i supposed that in social situations when I was being treated as a man and I didn't correct people because I didn't care to, and I even enjoyed it somewhat and leaned into that role, I was essentially Being a Man (socially). So Man came to be a role I found myself in occasionally, and Manhood came to be a vaguely defined something that was intriguing to me.

But these moments of Man Feeling ended up being more like exceptions that proved the rule. Anyone can feel a bit like a man in the right circumstance, because gender isn't static; its something we can and often do play with, and phase through. I feel like music puts me in some heavily gendered spaces, like Everyone has a part of them thats a woman when they're belting along to "I'm Every Woman", yknow. Anyway.

I didn't feel like a man that much. I didn't feel like a woman that much either. I felt like a butch more frequently, because when I do things that indulged my masculinity, when I'm consumed by my love and attraction to femininity, when I think about the queers that I admire most, I felt butch, and was drawn to butches and interesting queer women. Leslie Feinberg, Frida Kahlo, Nancy Grossman, Patricia Highsmith, leather dykes and femme pro-doms, transgender queens... I've just never been that drawn to the experience of being a man. I've never been interested in men, frankly. Every man I've admired has been very much despite being men. Sufjan Stevens, Clive Barker, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, John Waters... great and usually queer artists whose gender is irrelevant because I like their work. The only man in that list who I have some personal affection for is Sufjan Stevens. He is an angel.

If I'm going to be a gender, its going to be the gender I admire. That I aspire to. I don't aspire to any man. Perhaps I aspire to a kind of body or a kind of masculinity, and sometimes men do that, but thats just a lack of other non-man representations of the thing I like. When I see in butches, it feels like a depiction of Me. Also WOW do I So Not feel like a man when I'm with my lovers. Sometimes I feel a bit like a man when I'm in a certain headspace while domming or if I'm having the rare T4T(masc) dalliance, but I feel very dyky when I'm with femmes. I just don't FEEL manhood. And I don't really care for man. Edit: I will say, there is a kind of Queer Man Masculinity that I definitely admire and aspire to, like that depicted by Tom of Finland or various other usually kinky gay art. But again, I don't see the Man part as important - its the masculinity. Btw, imo, there is no line in the sand as far as transition stuff. I'm very dysphoric about my body and that's never been about how I'm seen by others; it's my comfort in my own skin, and doesn't change my indifference to men or manhood. and that is my butch vs trans man ramble

Headcanons of V that live rent free in my head.

Due to the biochip taking over V's mind, after a while Johnny had become very good at sensing when there was going to be a relic malfunction and would pre-warn V if they were about to have an episode.

V drinks a Jackie Welles every time they meet a new client in the Afterlife, and drinks a Johnny Silverhand before the start of a big gig. Both of them good luck charms, a Welles symbolised the beginning of a new partnership, and a Silverhand to bring luck and to start the gig on a high note. It had become a tradition very shortly after V had taken over.

V regularly visits Mama Welles after the biochip is removed. To relive and talk stories about Jackie over a table of food, both of them found it comforting in knowing that Jackie was watching over them both.

Panam's view of Night City very much one-sided due to her personal experience, V would later show Panam the sights and sounds of their personal favourite spots of the NC to convince her of the City's beauty.

V keeps many of Johnny's traits after the biochip is removed. The most obvious being that their posture is now a lot more slouched, and they are more inclined to make their frustrations known. They can also perfectly play Johnny's chords having never practised.

V boxed with Jackie and Viktor. Not as obsessed as the other two, V never managed to takedown Jackie but managed to takedown Vik once on the account that Jackie had unintentionally distracted him.

V kept in touch with Nancy after the Samurai concert. An investigative journaler, she would often ask V if they had any potential leads from their work that could be covered, or point them in the direction of events that were a bit too hostile for her on the promise that she could cover it from the sidelines.

Toward the end of the biochip taking control, V would receive regular texts from Kerry. V's habits much like Johnny's, self-care was very low down on V's list and depending on the relationship that V had with him, Kerry would message to make sure that V and Johnny were okay. Well aware of Johnny's antics and knowing that they had rubbed off on V, Kerry would regularly keep in touch and invite them over for food if he felt that V was not eating properly or needed to rest. Despite the impression that Kerry had made of himself, he was a very good cook and V had become his reason to pick it back up.

Hooo boy I am so glad someone asked me specifically about this, because I am actually very qualified to talk about it!!!

If you don't know me; Hi, I'm Levi, I am a theatre student, I'm currently working toward a degree in costume design and technology, and I have Big Opinions on clothing. Before I actually start talking about said opinions, let me first give a quick rundown on Costumes 101. Disclaimer: my education has been largely in the realm of stage production, but in Costume Land there is a very large overlap between stage and screen, with the main differences being on the technical side, which I will get more into later. That said, given the genre and tone of this show, my stage knowledge will apply.

And a word of warning: this anon has released a beast and this is going to be a long post, therefore I am putting my analysis under the cut. Also, apologies to those I tag, just want to make sure images and gifs get their proper credit.

Now, first and foremost, the purpose of costume on both screen and stage is to give insight into each character and passively tell a story. Therefore, nothing is coincidence and everything is intentional. Color, silhouette, piece, and style are all meticulously selected to bring a character to life and tell the audience who they are.

Example: In the live yesterday, Tricia Fukuhara mentioned requesting a beret she saw in the costume shop for Nancy, and while they did end up putting Nancy in several hats, she was told berets specifically were reserved for another character, Lydia. We do actually see another thespian with a beret, Alice (who IMDb tells me is played by Emilee Nimetz), which has... interesting implications, but that's for another post.

So let's see what we're working with here.

The first thing I notice is fairly obvious: this coat doesn't fit. That shoulder seam should be sitting right on the ball of their shoulder (think top of the shoulder cap); it's nearly halfway down their upper arm. Think it looks long here? Even when they're standing, it hits about mid-thigh. Not to mention that the sleeves themselves are baggy and way too long. They are swimming in this coat.

What does this mean? This coat isn't Cynthia's.

One could argue that it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility that Cynthia would own an ill-fitting coat; given the time period, I imagine it would be hard for a girl to find men's clothing in her size. Except, for the most part, Cynthia's masc clothing does fit.

Cynthia clearly has no problem finding men's clothing that fits. That said, there are technical reasons behind why a garment must fit beyond story-telling. Namely: actors' safety.

Out of any single one of Cynthia's looks, I would argue that this monstrosity:

would be the most likely candidate for ill-fitting garment, character-wise. Everything we know about Cynthia suggests that they aren't the type of person to buy a dress they will likely only wear once (i.e., they are poor: single-parent home, always hungry, excitement over free food (Buddy's campaign candy), and it appears that they live in an apartment).

All this to say, it would make sense for this dress in particular to not fit, and yet, it does. Why? There's a dance scene. While the hand jive itself is not a particularly intensive dance move, Ari is standing on tables, climbing on cars, jumping, crouching, all manner of things that would be dangerous to do in a garment that was too big.

(Side note: I've seen quite a few people suggest that this is an old dress or possibly a hand-me-down from somewhere, or if anything, purchased second-hand. I have reason to believe it's not, but again, that's another post).

Of course, Ari, and by extension, Cynthia, isn't doing anything in the Coat Scene (tm) that would endanger them by wearing something too big. Even still, given their previous wardrobe, it's out of place. And like I said before, nothing is coincidence and everything is intentional. And why is it significant that the coat is too big? Because nothing else that Cynthia wears is.

Now, all this was a very long-winded way to say that this is Papa Zdunowski's coat. It's clearly not Cynthia's, and their dad is the only other person they live with. So yes, dearest Anon, your theory is most definitely correct.

Cynthia had just had probably one of the worst nights in their young life. Their friend group has fallen apart, they've messed up big time with their oldest friend, Richie has been arrested, and they're being forced to confront that they are queer. They come home to an empty house, either literally (dad's still at the shop and mom hasn't been there in a long time) or figuratively (dad's asleep, and mom hasn't been there in a long time). @landofsonlali mentioned “i want a fic and/or art where steve and robin go through a series of jobs that all have terrible costumes. they have the scoops costumes, the elves, maybe they have to dress up as mascots for some fast food chain. i just want them to be forced into ridiculous costumes for all their jobs 😆” and I decided to run with this at 8am.

It’s a decade of different uniforms. Scoops and the family video vests were just the beginning. Steve and Robin worked at family video together until Robin went of to [insert big city] for college, Steve (and Eddie) in tow.

They work at a sandwich shop for a while, the hats an obnoxious caricature of a giant sub sandwich. Then a 50s diner which does wonders for Robin’s dating life, the attire suiting her extremely well as she leans into the more masc fashion of the era. (It’s also annoying does wonders for Steve and Eddie’s sex life, but she tried not to think about that). Then there was the Holiday season of 89 where they’d both taken second jobs as Mall Elves. (She still get quesey at the smell of peppermint. She’d had to switch toothpaste flavors after that one.)

After that it’s a rotating door of book store (another vest), hot dog shop (another hat added to the pile, and a very short stint as children entertainers (giant mascot costumes they’ve shoved into the front hall closet of their duplex).

But eventually she finishes school (and Steve does too) and they don’t get to work together anymore. There was a brief period of time when they wondered if to be ‘successful’ adults they’d need to also not live together.

After assurances from both Eddie and Nance (who Robin started dating around the time her and Steve were dressed as aforementioned furries) that no one was really all that interested in splitting up, she and Steve both relaxed. Because while they have their respective partners, their connection it far too deep to not be working together AND living together.

Eventually, around the late 90s they’ve saved up enough money to move into a bigger house, a house that lets them feel like they live together but gives them enough privacy that Robin doesn’t have to worry about walking in on something she’d rather *not* walk in on.

The uniforms sit in a hall closet alongside a bat and metal trash can lid with nails hammered through and an actual safe for Nancy’s fire arms, and a boom box preloaded and with very specific list of songs.
