OH HO HO THANKS

Ive got, uh, 24, more or less, and im working on ancestors!! Oh, and, uh, 2 more, but theyre set to the side for a reason!!

I'll go in hemospectrum order, so each pair is, you know, burgundy to fuschia!!

I've got the Hidcuts, my Alternian one being Byssta and my Beforan one being Herxes!!

Byssta is a hairdresser for other lowbloods, he's got his own stall at a salon run by a bunch of olives! He's a Heir of Mind, his chumhandle is MaliciousNotebook, he's a prospit dreamer, and his sburb land is the Land of Fog and Windows!! His puzzles center around him trying to figure out what all of the windows have in common, they show, like, 4th wall kinda junk!! He has a razorkind strife specibus, like, primarily those shaving Razors? He uses a Lier fetch modus, which basically means whatever he puts away will come out at the -worst- time possible, even though he'll need it! Like Kanaya's fetch modus, but a bit of jumpscare material sprinkled in. Ummm, lemme see, i have a troll call card I made for him:

That's a very -old- drawing, and the other one i made for a different character turned out much much better!! He's also Belten's ex moirail!

Herxes is, like... Sherlock Holmes, but -lower-, college student Sherlock Holmes. (His name is actually, like... a dumb play on -Hercules-, from Hercules Peirot!!) He's a Mage of Mind, his chumhandle is MoriartysNemesis, prospit dreamer, his land is of Undead and Rot, where he has to figure out what killed everything except his consorts!! [Theyre decomposers!!] He uses a spearkind strife specibus, and his fetch modus is basically wheres waldo, where he has to find the object he needs in an image on the card!! Both Hidcuts have a quadriped hummingbird as their lusus!! No wings, only feet.

Next is my bronzes, Ronzel and Dareos Begray!!

Ronzel is THE COOLEST GAL, she's a knight of heart, Derse dreamer she's a bartender at another troll's nightclub [belten's!!] She has a boar lusus, her land is of Clouds and Chasms, where she's gotta make it rain!! Her strife specibus is chain kind, again, cool as hell, and her fetch modus is, like... password protected, where her cards each have a -unique- code!! She's so cool, i love her so much, very much, like... cool hot topic babysitter vibes? Idk how else to describe it, shes just GREAT!! Oh, her chumhandle is PensiveTruant!

Dareos Begray is a, like, vtuber? And also a sex worker, hes got, like, a whole set up for either thing? His main client -and- subscriber is my beforan violet, Adonis Raytil! He's a page of heart, his chumhandle is PastelTomentor, his land is Advertisement and Beauty, he needs to help a megacorp sell this revolutionary youth cream?? [Fuck capitalism, but i thought it was fun!! Plus the youth cream only works on the camel consorts :/ ] He also has a chain kind specibus, but his is moreso yo-yo esque??? A meteor hammer, to be exact!! He uses a reward fetch modus, which is basically achievment based? He'll need to do something to the card's specifications before he can get the item, and that can be anything from breaking a plate to defeat the fucking denizen of his land :/

MY GOLDIESSSSSSS, belten and desrio brytee!! They have a Jewel Beetle lusus!!

Its very important to me to show off belten's troll call card first:

(The double b is his quirk!!!) BBelten is a page of light, a nightclub owner, has and will press every try me button in the toy aisle, his chumhandle is BoisterousBraggart, his land is Glow and Fruit, and his strife specibus is GLOWSTICKKIND!! His weapon is Einsten's Glowstick, which starts to irradiate foes when you crack it :] I made him when suffering jetlag, and i was practicing hair, and here we are, 23 trolls later. He's the leader of his own session, and completely on accident, as Ronzel, his moirail, was supposed to go in first! I love him. Oh, he's also got a ddr fetch modus, which is exactly what it sounds like!

Desrio Brytee [also known as Depression the Kid] is a Prince of Light, drug dealer, local faulty light bulb, and owner of the chumhandle BedriddenBastard! His land is of Hexes and Drugs, he's got an EXPLOSIVES STRIFE SPECIBUS, and hes also got his hair split dyed with the obnoxious pink and orange of the bbrytee's eyes!! His fetch modus is just pill fetch modus, which is also fairly simple!!

Next are my limes, the DURLENS!! Pikled [affectionately called Pikles] and Einsen!!

Pikled is a Seer of Void, a walking steampunk mess, hes missing his left arm [blown off by a droid, was belten's fault, they broke up about it, at least red wise. Belten's a heart breaker mhm] derse dreamer, hes got a land of artifacts and space, a crowbarkind specibus, and he's batshit insane. Like, he's cute, but both he and Einsen are *w a c k*. He uses a pendulum fetch modus, which means he'll get either one item or the other, and the remaining item will be locked until he can get another item on the card! He's got a massive crush on his olive, we'll get to her, she's also wack.

Einsen Durlen is a cyberpunk knight of void, he's missing his left lower leg, [scuttlebuggy accident, debateably desrio's fault, they also broke up about it red ways] he has a Land of Rime and Yarn, he uses a screwdriver kind specibus, hes constantly got a mask on [like pikled always has goggles!!], he has a mask fetch modus, which really just means once he puts a card in, he has to figure out what its -disguised- as to get the item! If not, he doesnt get it from the card! Oh, I also havent really been mentioning quirk, but part of his is that sometimes he'll just replace a word or a part of a sentence with [REDACTED] to show hes keeping something from someone, instead of just... lying... or not mentioning it. (He'll also replace his i's with \ and his l's with /, jsyk)

ONWARDS, TO OLIVES, odytra and sklera Marcol!!!

Odytra is a thief of space, her lusus is a six legged cat, she uses a stringkind strife specibus, glove fetch modus [means she needs special gloves to get out her stuff], she's a derse dreamer, annnnnnnd, oh, she makes people into desserts at her diner. Uh-huh. Granted, that's very private, most people dont know!! She also has, like... a thing with number 7, idk what to tell you chief

Sklera is a skateboarder punk, Sylph of Space, she has a oand of topiary and keys, very alice in wonderland!! She has a Wrenchkind strife specibus, an 8 Ball fetch modus, and einsen is TERRIBLY in love with her! Not too much to say on her!

Next are my jades, but i think i'll post this, and add the remaining trolls when i have time, if you'd like!!!

Absolutely I can! Good question, let me see...

Okay my opinions on this are kinda boring because I like neutral and subdued colour palettes (warning I like yellow and gold so...most costumes I love are some variation of these shades). I will sort this into Tom and Queen costumes.

Toms

-Asparagus (Chorus Costume)

The list starts with me being predictable, of course, but what I appreciate about Asparagus' chorus costume is that it is, arguably, the most unique one while still blending relatively easily into the background due to its otherwise unremarkable colour palette/wig (like there is nothing all that special about his unitard design or wamers or tail, I’m aware). Most of the cats, in order to fluff out the human neckline, have the "shoulder fluffies". Asparagus is the only one who has what I will affectionately call the "yarn poncho", which comes in various thicknesses but I prefer this kind:

And, occasionally, yarn threaded pants:

Which are delightfully ugly gives him an even shaggier/fluffier appearance and I love it. The only other individuals who have manes/shaggy coats are Tugger and Old Deuteronomy (and Grizabella technically), but none of them have this detail in their original chorus costume, just their main character costume. This detail was removed from the 1998 Video (unknown as to why since Tony Timberlake wore it on stage), and from the Broadway Revival (probably because Asparagus pretty much disappears early on in favour of Gus being a permanent fixture instead). A shame really, because it makes him immediately recognizable and easy to pick out.

The quality of his makeup varies for me since the whole purpose is to make it easy to paint over for Gus and Bustopher changes (Much like Plato). For some versions that means he's completely white in the face with little dimension, but I prefer when they add subtle details like striping or line work.

-Alonzo (Broadway and Broadway Based)

I have expressed before and I will express again that my unpopular CATS opinion is that I overall prefer Broadway based "golden" Alonzo costumes (and character) over London based black and white ones. This is absolutely not to say that I dislike the London costume because that isn't true. I like it very much it's very striking. But I think I prefer the golden Alonzo costumes because:

A. There is something very visually pleasing to me about gold and black Alonzos being paired with gold and black Demeters, and a Gold/Silver protector duo.

B. I like the earthy palette, the dual-toned muzzle, the fluffy tail, and the warmers (it makes for a more muted image when Alonzo is slinking around in the BG, particularly when shadowing Demeter)

C. The gold/black/brown is, imho, far more flattering to a variety of different skin tones than the clown white is. The neutral colour palette ties the makeup together very nicely, particularly when patches of skin are left bare (like on the face or the hands), as it often continues into the costume itself giving the whole ensemble more unity.

Also I just like it? I don't know why.

- Skimbleshanks (London Chorus and Number)

Skimble's costume is one of those that I like both chorus and character version of, because they're both very well coordinated palette wise. I love the chunky, organic weaves in his warmers and tail. I love the vest and the little bell! I love the complexity of his makeup, which is one of the hardest to do in the show. The wig can be very hit or miss for me depending on how it's styled. Some of the more recent wigs in the revivals and tours haven't been great tbh.

Skimble also has the benefit of having my favourite arm warmers in the show when they look like this (because elbow patches):

I want a pair. I should make myself a pair. But the patches daunt me.

Honourable Mention goes to the hundreds of Austrian crystals and stones that are hand attached to Mr. Mistoffelees' velvet costume during his number (of which Marlene Danielle collected when they fell off on stage and kept them in a vase in her dressing room) because sparkly *_*.

Queens

-Demeter (Broadway based)

The only notable difference between London and Broadway Demeter's are the styling of the wigs and I LOVE the much more exaggerated spikey, punk-like styling of these wigs let me tell you. If she doesn't look like there are three tons of gel in her hair it isn't spikey enough.

I feel like it gives her character an edge, which is a nice contrast to the overall softness of her makeup. There's also a simplicity to Demeter's makeup design that is well complemented by the more complex patterns on her unitard.

Though Bomba’s design is very similar, I prefer Demeter’s for whatever reason. I just like golds and yellows, I guess. I think the only thing I don’t like about Demeter’s design is her lipstick (particularly when it’s red) because I find it sticks out too much and looks odd.

-Jellylorum (Original Paris)

I have spoken about her before, but I love how elegant this design is. The Original Paris wigs are my favourite wigs (because I like big wigs I cannot lie), and ones that were styled like Jelly’s were particular favourites:

Like she’s still classic Jellylorum colours but the warmers soften her silhouette while the wig and makeup sweep her features up. It’s just a very beautiful design to me, idk why.

-Rumpleteazer (Japan)

I don't need to explain myself here. Look at how cute she is:

I love the tiger stripes and I love her wig and I love her makeup. I do like the garter belt straps of the London design, but I can live without them. I wish her pearls were white to make them stand out a bit more like in the London design though.

Honestly I love a lot of the CATS costumes so it’s difficult to narrow them down, but I would definitely put these particular characters in the top ten.

okay so like i am vaguely aware that you probably wanted me to actually create a story like i did for the other asks;

because listen, florist Magnus???????? i had never thought about it before, but that shit is THE BOMB

in indonesia, particularly Bali, flowers hold special significance both in the social and religious sense; they have meaning, they have history, and they have everyday uses and are a part of everyday life; people grow flowers at home, give them as gifts, have entire markets entirely dedicated to the trade of flowers. and yes, i know magnus is javanese, but this applies to pretty much all of Indonesia, including Java, and Jakarta has its own traditional flower market with flowers from all over the world and some of the sellers being in the business since the 60s, not to mention that many balinese ppl immigrated to Java and the two islands' histories are deeply connected. so nothing is even stopping me from believing that magnus' mom was a balinese migrant living in Java. which is exactly what im gonna do in this specific AU at least

So Magnus was actually born in Indonesia, where he lived for most of his childhood; until his mom suddenly died of a terrible disease and he was kind of thrown into living with his father, who, despite having him registered and being his legal guardian, had never so much as bothered to meet Magnus before this point

His father was also Indonesian but had long since moved to the US, so magnus' life was completely turned upside down. And despite providing financially for everything Magnus needed, asmodeus never really bothered with him beyond the basics; Magnus was pretty much self-raised

So for the whole time he lived with him, he ached with memories of his mom and his country. And what he remembered best about her was the flowers. The jasmines she used to grow at home, the unique smell they left on the water she used to wash his hair; the offerings of frangipani she would leave by their doorstep everyday, intricately sewn together and leaving the smell of both the flowers and the incense with them as they left to the ports; the flower boards she would give him on his birthday, different patterns every year, and somehow she would always find plywood and tahi cotok to make them the traditional way instead of the modern with styrofoam

Magnus refuses to let any of these traditions die; once he finally graduates and leaves his father's home (forever disappointing him in his refusal to take over his business) he dedicates almost all of the space in his home to a greenhouse where he can grow all of the indigenous indonesian flower species without worrying that they will die in the distinctly not-tropical climate of New York; he leaves offerings in his doorstep everyday, facing North for Vishnu, so as to bring harmony not only in his life but in his whole community as well. And he's a florist.

He knows both traditional indonesian flower meanings, and western flower language, and often mixes the two since the flowers in these cultures are so different. He makes bouquets, arrangements, and flower boards, keeping the tradition alive even when he's far away from home. This way he feels like he belongs, like he carries a piece of his mother with him everyday, and reminds himself that, even if he's been taken away from his home, it won't be taken away from him

It's pretty much only him in his shop, but his friend Dot also makes deliveries and helps him keep the shop running. He has a few regulars and all in all he lives a stable, happy life.

He meets Alec when he decides to make his first tattoo - a string of jasmines around his elbow, the national flowers of indonesia and also his mom's favorite. He chooses Alec both because of his mesmerising drawing style and his history of working and good recommendations from other dark-skinned people; his friend Catarina also tattooed at his shop, although with his sister, Izzy, who was the one who actually ran the shop

Alec is impressed by how well Magnus handles the pain; it's his very first tattoo and elbows are a bitch. Magnus doesn't tell him that after living with his father for so long he's used to the pain, but he does tell him about the meaning of the tattoo, the flowers, and his mom. He's surprised by how much he's saying to this guy he barely knows, but there's something about wanting to be distracted from the sting and having to be alone with this guy for who knows how many hours that keeps him talking. Alec listens to it quietly, focused on his work, and Magnus isn't even sure if he's actually listening, which kind of also works if he's being honest. Of course, Alec is; listening to Magnus talk is very nice, his voice is soothing and the way he talks about his mom and his passion for flowers is really touching, not to mention Magnus is just interesting; alluring, if you will. But he doesn't have much to add, so he listens

A few days later, Alec shows up at Magnus' shop, all private smiles and wandering eyes, and asks him for help with a birthday present for Izzy. He wants to make her something special, to thank her for her support when he came out and just support in general. It surprises Magnus, but Alec says that Izzy has always liked flowers and from the way Magnus was talking about it the other day, well, he seemed like a good person to help him with this present. He really wanted something to convey his gratitude

Magnus is pleasantly surprised that Alec remembers so much of what he said; even more so when he's careful not to step on Magnus' canang sari at the doorstep, with the incense still burning; and he's absolutely delighted when Alec says he wants Magnus to help him make an arrangement, not just make himself, and that he's willing to pay extra for his consulting (Magnus has never charged extra for consulting, because he really downplays his talent and work and loves sharing his knowledge; but it does feel nice to be valued and have his work acknowledged). So Magnus runs all of his ideas by him, shows him the flowers, and Alec carefully handles and smells them and listens to Magnus' suggestions and slowly makes his own based on what Magnus has been saying. Alec shows respect to the flowers and it's cute to see this big, buffy guy covered in weird tattoos and wearing a leather jacket going around and carefully handling the flowers Magnus grows.

Alec, on the other hand, is just fascinated by everything Magnus says and shows him, and his burning passion for what he does, and how clearly he likes to help people even if it means downplaying his own work

Wow this is actually starting to resemble a plot??? I'm shook

Anyway it takes them a long while to figure out what they want to do, and Alec actually ends up deciding on making izzy a flower board once Magnus mentions them offhandedly. Once Magnus assures him it's not offensive if he makes them with the proper care and respect for its meaning, they settle on working on that.

Listen I need excuses for them to interact okay. Also the idea of Magnus teaching Alec how to sew flowers???? Beautiful

Cue some gay shit, at least once Alec puts a flower behind Magnus' ear and tells him that it suits him, more often than not they find themselves having a lot of fun - Magnus teases him mercilessly over how bad at sewing he is, and Alec is deeply offended (except not really)

Once he even tries to challenge Magnus at doing something from Alec's element and see how well he does, only to be sent into the deepest despair when it turns out magnus is excellent at drawing

Magnus thinks he hears a muttered "of course" but he cant be too sure

Anyway they fall in love

Alec asks him out by making him a bouquet of magnus' favorite flowers, plus flowers that symbolize everything he loves the most about him (his uniqueness, his kindness, his fierceness, his determination in doing what he thinks is right, the joy he brings for everyone around him, his dedication to others, etc). Magnus all but swoons he is very charmed

They get married idk it always ends with them getting married when i have a say in it. Bonus points they get to be showered in flowers like in traditional indonesian weddings, which sends a very happy, very giggly magnus with petals still on his hair into absolute delight. Alec carries him bridal style to the bed and carefully takes the flowers off his hair and kisses him tenderly on their honeymoon and gggggggggggggggg.

Im gay and cant do this anymore im gonna get into a coma

Also, I will take this opportunity to just let it be known that y'all should feel absolutely free to take any and all of my posts as writing prompts; you dont need to ask for my permission to use the ideas, theres no way ill actually do them all and even if i do i dont mind that there are different versions of it going around; hell, i think that's amazing and exactly what fandom is for. Just link the post and if possible send me the fic because i'd be delighted to read it! What I'm trying to say here is, someone should write this

P5R spoilers

Please note this is all just my opinion and I may just be being cynical and I am still waiting happily for the English release of P5R, I just need to get this off my chest

Look not to be mean or anything but Kasumi/Sumire Yoshizawa is the most garbage addition to P5R and the game would be 10000 times better if they just removed her unneccessary ass considering she doesnt even add anything plot wise, has less of a dynamic with the rest of the team than Yuuki Mishima who isnt even in the team and is only usable in one fucking Palace. Seriously, Atlus hyped this chick up as if she's going to change the scopes of P5R when she's not even the cause of the "Dream World" nor the most severe victim of Maruki's, by putting her next to Akira/Ren and Goro, two characters who ARE extremely important to the plot for obvious reasons, which is just insulting considering all she does is devalues the importance of their unique relationship by Atlus pretending shes actually important.

Everything about Kasumi/Sumire is a bland mixture of all the main girls, like her "real" appearance is just a shinier version of Futaba with Makoto's eyes, her backstory is Makoto's sister issues with Futaba's "losing a loved one to a car accident right infront of her", her "eating a lot of food so cutely" is lifted from Futaba and Ann, she has the same persoanlity as Haru, stands outs in looks like Ann and is an honor student like Makoto, shes 15 and is extremely talented in a specific field like Futaba, her "looking down" cut in in the metaverse is an obvious copy of Makoto's, even their masks are alike, like ffs her Phantom Thief outfit is literally just a female Joker and yeah I know they gave an explanation for that but its so damn half assed considering it implies that Kasumi/Sumire is unable to have her own individual idea of rebellion. She's everything and nothing at the same fucking time. Like theres nothing wrong with having similar backgrounds but sheesh Atlus didnt even try. This is the kind of character you put in a later game like P6 where the similarities to all the P5 main girls won't be so obvious. The most unique thing about her is the gymnast schtick.

Instead of focusing on fixing the shit in the base game, they decided to add a new character who's only purpose is to market P5R to dudebros. She's more useless than Haru of all characters. Kasumi/Sumire just embodies all the problems with P5R, instead of focusing on actually improving the base, they just added new stuff in order to cover up the cracks but all it does is add newer ones. The fact Atlus pushes aside the other main characters in the game so she can be as special as Goro and Akira/Ren even though she's not even a rival or an active foil to either of them is insulting to both those two and the rest of the cast.

Atlus hyped her character up so much with all the art and collaborations with her in them, the heavy emphasis they put on "The Royal Trio" (which by the way, they can barely even be considered as one considering theres nothing that makes Akira/Ren's connection with her any different to the other Phantom Thieves compared to how his connections with Goro are) and how it seemed like Kasumi/Sumire is going to one of the best characters they've ever made.

I had such high expectations and was so excited for her involvement in the story. And god damn. I was so fucking dissapointed with her. Kasumi/Sumire is easily the worst part of p5r and god damn was she NOT worth all the hype in the end. Literally just adding Maruki and the Goro stuff would have been enough, maybe Jose because he's not exactly shoved in the main story and is useful in mementos.

I think P5R is a good game, and I'm still looking forward to the English release on May. But wow, talk about having one huge red stain in the front cover.

Webtoon Recommendations

sooooo yeah im gonna drop here a list of some series' im reading on Webtoon that are really good in no real order despite the fact that nobody asked bc i need more people to chat about them with. i would put these under a readmore but im on mobile and it Will Not Let Me sorry.

Tower of God *

I have no idea how to explain this one but its very very good and only gets better the further in you get. Reading this is an absolute ROLLERCOASTER and i get fast past tokens so i can keep up with it. The basic concept is that there is a magic tower with "floors" that are their own little worlds and if you get to the top of this tower your wish will be granted. But partway up the tower someone decided to stop climbing it and declare himself king. And Thats Just The Setting. The actual story is even wilder than the concept though and im not doing it justice but its SO GOOD.

Lore Olympus *

basically a retelling of Persephone and Hades' lovestory but more modern and very well done i love this one to pieces its the best slowburn ive paid attention to in a WHILE

Muted*

So this witch named Camille's 21st birthday ritual to summon a demon and secure her familys prosperity goes just a liiittle bit (jk its a LOT) wrong and sets the plot into motion revealing a bunch about her backstory she didnt know before. Honestly? Its super good and updates weekly

Seed

basically its set in the future where a girl befriends a very special AI and changes the whole world. The first season of it is amazing and I cant wait for them to come out with the second!

Lesbiampires

this is just a buncha short little bits about two lesbian vamp girlfriends whl sre too fucking cute with some backstory peppered in. I reread these when im feeling sad

Kura

this one only has a few chapters but its very cute so far. Its about a young mermaid living near an island all alone who meets some pirates. tbh she needs a hug and like a cookie or something.

Stagtown

so this one is a complete curveball from the others and is like a really unique horror series Im really enjoying at the moment. Its a series of stories about a girl in an odd town where progressively fucked up things keep happening. Has some gore though so be advised. (i believe the chapters w gore are warned at the start but i could be wrong)

The Wrath & The Dawn*

So this one is also fairly newish but im really enjoying it so far. According to its infoblurb its a retelling of 1001 nights, but ive never read that so for people like me, heres a little summary. Its about a Caliph (leader of the caliphate, considered to be a successor to the Prophet Muhammad) who keeps taking new brides each night only to have them killed in the morning and a girl who volunteered knowing thats what hes been doing.

a story about a kid who can bring stuff to life with his drawings (which like. u kno. Objectively and all... COOL?!?!) who lives in a correctional facility for people with powers. Unlike preeeetttyyyyy much everyone else he cant (doesnt? idk) suppress his which means he has no friends really and so hes super lonely and then SHENNANIGANS happen. in all seriousness it gets a bit dark and has like, a small amount of gore near the end of what is up at the time of posting.

I'm still crossing my fingers for Kairi being the other playable character. No offense to any other big potential possibilities but we've 2 (3 if you count kh2) games playing Riku for a big portion of the game. Roxas had a whole game to himself as well as kh2 long prologue. Aqua technically starred in 2 games too. I'd love to have Kairi jist to finally have played all Destiny trio members and to see her fighting style. Plus since Light's going to expire maybe the keyblader who's a pure light --

(2/2) will be left standing in a reality overtaken by darkness? Idk, she’s already saved Sora’s butt once by basically defying all accepted logic. I have a feeling she could do it again (plus we’ve had so much Sora+Riku development and even really cute Kairi+Riku interactions, I want some heavy focus on the Sora+Kairi bond again considering they’re each other’s most important person).Answer, here be KH3 spoilers:

I’d love for Kairi to be the other playable character for the reasons you mentioned, but lately I’ve been thinking there’s a good chance Roxas will be the other playable character instead.

For one, his move set is similar to Sora’s, so it’s probably easier to have him as a playable character.

For another, just like how we play as Roxas for a little while in KH2 and we even have to fight him near the end of the game, it would be an interesting twist to play as Roxas again, this time as the good guy fighting Sora near the end of the game (if Soranort happens).

Plus, if Sora falls to darkness saving Roxas, I can see Nomura going for the parallel of Roxas returning the favor and saving Sora.

And, let’s be honest, Roxas is a lot more popular with the fanbase than Kairi, and Nomura is probably aware of that. He tends to give more screentime to fan favorites like Lea, Aqua, and Riku (though Riku has waned in popularity somewhat in Japan at least) than to the (as of late) neglected Kairi and Naminé, who scored third and fourth place in the female character popularity poll behind Aqua and Xion. Of course, this is arguably even more of a reason to have Kairi be playable, but history is not on Kairi’s side here.

Would I like a playable Kairi? Yes, but honestly, I probably would enjoy playing as Roxas again. I’d rather have him be playable over Riku, since we’ve had plenty of chances to play as Riku already and DDD was more his game than Sora’s. Playable Riku wouldn’t ruin the game for me though; I do think if the other playable character was him, however, Nomura wouldn’t have been so secretive about it.

The one thing I do think that might hint at Kairi being a playable character is that she has been shown on the cover art with her Keyblade:

This isn’t by any means conclusive, but it’s interesting to note that the only other characters who have their Keyblades on that cover art are Mickey, Sora, and Riku, who have all been playable at some point or other throughout the series.

My guess is that this is hinting that these four (Mickey, Riku, Sora, and Kairi) will be the main characters of this game, but it’s hard to say, and again, hoping for tons of screentime for characters who are not Sora is setting expectations that might not get met.

But based on what we know, I think the narrative will follow three general arcs: Riku and Mickey’s search for Aqua and whatever comes next, Sora’s quest to gain the Power of Waking and find The Key to Return Hearts, and Kairi’s training along with Lea. It would make sense for at least one of these other main characters to be playable, and fingers crossed it’s Kairi.

Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and Sora, Kairi, and Riku will all be playable though! If Soranort does happen I’d love for Kairi (along with Riku) to be the ones to rescue him because of those potential parallels with KH1.

No matter what happens, however, give me more moments of Sora and Kairi bonding, please and thank you! As friends, as allies, as potential romantic interests, because we NEED to see more of their relationship! KH1 did a good job of this, but you’re exactly right - KH3 would do well to focus more on their bond again. They’ve been separated for so much of the series and that separation has NOT done their romantic development (or friendship, for that matter!) any favors.

Think about it: we haven’t seen them on screen together since Blank Points. It’s been eight years (nine for the Japanese fans). Now, I think Nomura has something special planned for their reunion, because he carefully avoided having them meet in 0.2, but Square Enix in general lately has… not been good about having their main couples actually interact with each other (looking at you, Noctis and Luna and Snow and Serah, though the latter was much better about this than the former). And let’s face it, interaction is VITALLY important for a good romance! Don’t tell me they are deeply in love, SHOW me.

I am a HUGE SoKai fan, as anyone who has read my writing can tell you, but… even I know that if Nomura wants to further their romance in a believable way, they actually NEED to be on screen at the same time. Talking. Interacting. Cracking jokes. Making each other laugh. Comforting each other. Cheering each other up. Lingering gazes. Lingering hand holds. Reminiscing about shared memories. Grand romantic gestures. Small acts of love. Big acts of sacrifice.

And the thing is… every time they have been on screen together so far, their interactions have been fantastic! The chemistry is there, the emotion is there. Their reunions are always the highlights of the games. There just hasn’t been enough shared screentime, and the two of them desperately need more of it for their romance to develop believably.

I’d even argue that Sora’s feelings have been demonstrated well. There’s no doubt about how he feels about Kairi; he sacrificed his life for her in KH1, Xion looks like her because of how much she means to him; Naminé replaced his memories of her with memories of Naminé because Naminé knew she was the most important person to him, he can’t wake up in KH2 until he has his memories of her back, etc., etc. It’s not much of an exaggeration to say the plots of two entire KH games (COM and Days) have been centered around how much she means to him.

It’s more on Kairi’s end that I want to see more about what Sora means to her, and it’ll help if she has more screentime. Especially if she’s playable. That being said, I don’t want her to only think and talk about Sora; she needs to have just as much depth as he does. Let her interact with other people and have friends of her own, just like Sora has friends of his own. Her growing friendship with Lea is promising, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that that’s going to center completely around Xion, given Xion’s popularity with the Japanese fans. I’m worried Lea won’t value Kairi for Kairi, instead the audience will just constantly be reminded of how much Kairi reminds him of Xion instead of treating Kairi like her own person.

I mean, c’mon, she’s the original! Without her Xion wouldn’t even look like she does! Naminé wouldn’t exist! Sora wouldn’t have needed to sacrifice himself to save her in the first place, so Roxas wouldn’t either, for that matter. For a series so big on how special and unique every heart is, no matter how it came into existence, it’s kind of shooting yourself in the foot if you treat one of the original main characters as lesser than the people she helped create!

To be fair, though, that’s more just my concerns, and we don’t know how things will actually play out in the game, so I’ll reserve further judgment until then.

But I actually have hope that we will see Kairi and Sora interacting more in this game, mainly because of this:

“Destinies intertwine, and an oath becomes power” - combined with the quote about a new charm that seems to imply Kairi will be giving Sora some sort of leveled up version of her good luck charm, if not a completely new one, and my guess is that they will talk at least once before the final battle. Hopefully during the battle and after the battle as well. I have a hunch that even if Kairi is not playable, she might very well be a party member along with Riku for the final world.

And I am really excited about that. That screenshot above at least is proof that they’ll have time alone together to talk, which is in and of itself huge! The last time they were alone together was in KH1. Even in KH2 other people were present for their reunions. Alone time like this is a sign of something special, make no mistake about that :) (Edit to add: and no, I don’t think this is proof that Riku is dead. Riku exists outside of their relationship, and they exist outside of their relationship with Riku. He’s a good friend and knows when to give them their space, that’s all. Riku is also the deuteragonist of the series and it would make little sense to kill him off in a game that seems like it’s going to be all about saving and restoring people, but that could be an entire post of its own and I’ll leave things as they are for now).

Anyway, this got really long-winded, but yes, I’m hoping Kairi is the other playable character too, because I want her to get the screentime and development she deserves.

Kingdom Hearts 3: Final Thoughts

Ok well not really final thoughts cause I’m sure I’ll be internally screaming over this game for the rest of time, but I figured I’d leave my thoughts about the game in a more... coherent manner than what my screaming during the liveblogging conveyed. And so, here we go with me basically talking about everything I liked, loved, and maybe wasn’t so ok with (cause the game wasn’t perfect lol) and yeah there will be spoilers aplenty so I’ll tuck it away under the cut cause I have a feelin this is gonna get long. So... here we go:

First I’ll start off wit the easy stuff, the presentation. By GOD is this game fucking beautiful to look out. All of the graphics are so crisp and clean and everything just BURSTS with color. Never before have the Disney worlds felt so alive in a KH game and now they’re JAMMED back with detail. I first noticed this while wandering around Galaxy Toys in the Toy Box and I gasped at just how many little minute details there were to be found, from price tags for toys, to sticky notes on bulletin boards, and so on. Every single place you visit in this game looks like its actually been lived in as opposed to just being another set piece. They were all so much fun to explore and I’ll go into detail about each Disney world at least later on. As for everything else, so much effort was put into just about EVERYTHING! From the ways environments are lit (Corona especially had some nice lighting effects, as did San Fransokyo), from enemy designs, to characters expressions oh god the expressions. KH games in the past tended to rely on stock expressions in some scenes because hey, its easy when ya don’t need to put your whole foot forward, I get it. But here? There are no stock facial expressions, everyone, everyone emotes in such vivid and realistic ways so that you can just see how characters are feeling/what they’re thinking just through their body language and expressions alone (Sora especially aslkdjasld I’ll go on about my son in a bit tho). In terms of other visual stuff, I LOVED how flashy this game could get in terms of attacks (Attraction Flow especially oh my god), some say it might have gone over the top, but to me, it just made me so excited to use everything I had in my arsenal just to see how things looked!

Next the music oh GOD the MUSIC. From the moment this game’s version of Dearly Beloved started playing I knew I was in for a DAMN pleasant listening experience. But what I loved even more was how this game went above and beyond with is score. Yeah ya have your basic level and battle background themes (my personal favs among those include Arendelle’s and Corona’s themes), but then most cutscenes are scored with individual little musical cues, almost like scenes right out of a movie instead of just the same theme playing on repeat in the background! That honestly added such a neat little touch to the game that I instantly noticed and loved IMMEDIATELY (this game also improved Sora’s theme SO much and used it a lot and I fucking LOVED that) and other returning songs were great too (Mysterious Tower’s theme is spectacular now, and even though they didn’t really change Hundred Acre Woods’ theme, they added more orchestration to it to make it sound even prettier!) And of course, don’t even get me started on Face My Fears and Don’t Think Twice, both of those are such AMAZING songs, probably my fav Utada songs out of the entire series (Don’t Think Twice especially lol)

Next up, gameplay. So I kinda suck at KH games but honestly? I didn’t really have THAT hard of a time with this one. I played it in normal mode (cause I aint about to punish myself with proud mode alskdjalksdja) and I only started dying towards the end of the game and even then I didn’t die that much. But don’t get me wrong, the game isn’t stupidly easy either. The enemies will fuck you up if you’re not careful. I always made sure to reserve my magic to use cure like... fucking constantly because better safe than sorry! As for attacks, I favored using formchanges a lot because I always felt way more powerful with them (I beat the game using the BH6 keyblade imo that’s a good one) and Attraction Flow was also really useful and fun to use! Summons I... didn’t really use that much lol (same old story as other KH games) and team attacks I did use pretty much whenever they were offered to me (the ones with Disney companions were always a lot of fun!). Outside of battle, exploring in this game is SO much fun! Even aside from all the stuff to look at, there’s a lot to find! From ingredients (oh god the game wouldn’t fucking let me forget about ingredients), to hidden Mickeys (laskdjalskdjsad fuckin hell could never find any when the game outright told me there was one in front of me I’m stupid as hell), to the usual chests and whatnot, searching around was always a fun time (unless it was for fucking crabs, but we’ll get to that). Plus can I just say that I adore how smooth it is to control Sora in this game? Like seriously the boy actually runs at a decent pace for a change, his jump doesn’t feel like he’s wearing goddamn cement shoes, and the fucking tricks he can pull off with the whole running up walls and shit? fantastically fun to do. Special gameplay elements in the game were also usually always welcome, but I’ll get to those for each individual world when I go through em.

But before I do that, I’ll briefly speak on all the extra stuff this game offers for you to do because by god is it packed with content. I didn’t really explore a ton of what it had to offer cause I wanted to beat the main story as quickly as I could, but what I did explore of it was a lot of fun! Cooking with Remy is adorable and even though I didn’t really use any of the dishes I cooked up I still had fun finding ingredients and doiing the little minigames for each dish. Hundred Acre Woods minigames were all kinda samey but tbh it was a fun game nonetheless. I only played one of the Classic Kingdom games but tbh next time I visit the game, I really do wanna try more of them, they’re super cute. The camera function was a delight askdjskd such a cute touch to add, taking selfies with Disney characters is my new favorite thing oh my god and... ugh guess I’ll talk about the Gummi ship here too... I never liked it in 1 or 2 but god they really fucked it up here imo. I know some might disagree with me on this, but by god this game could not get me to care about customizing my own ship. I pretty much kept with the basic ship the whole game, avoided every single enemy I could and mostly just bit the bullet so I could get to new worlds as quickly as possible. And most of the time I didn’t really mind it, UNTIL THE LAST GUMMI MISSION. The way the camera controls and the vertical and horizontal controls fuck each other up is so fucking stupid and trying to navigate that damn ship through tight and tiny corridors only for the camera to have a piss fit every time I so much as skiff by a wall made me so fucking mad why did they do this the rest of the game the missions are in wide open space plains so why force me into a bunch of tight corridors at the very last minute laskdjsldsd oh my god it was terrible

ANYWAY moving on to much more fun stuff to talk about, how about them Disney worlds, huh? Might as well talk about my thoughts on each one of them, since they all offered such unique experiences that came together SO damn nicely:

Olympus was, in my opinion, an excellent way to kick off the game. You get plenty of room to explore and see exactly what’s new in terms of gameplay and the game gives you chances to learn those moves and practice them in a nice, controlled environment. The world itself is lush and lovely and quite varied, with Thebes as an entire city environment to explore, the mountain to climb up and avoid Titans on (excellent first real bosses in the game btw I was so hype throughout that entire fight) and the beautiful environment of Olympus itself to slide and glide through). I was also pleasantly surprised in just how much the world set up for the rest of the game, kicking off Sora’s whole arc of having to get stronger throughout the game (more on that later), showing what Pete and Maleficent are up to (again more on that later), showing us that the Organization is still kickin and a threat, and basically getting us hype for everything else that’s to come! I’ll give Olympus an 8/10 I’d say if I had to score it lol

Next up in terms of full worlds to explore is the Toy Box and DAMN this world was impressive. They really did a GREAT job making you feel like a toy exploring a much larger world around you. Most of this level did take place at Galaxy Toys but I really don’t see that as a restriction since the place is MASSIVE and so much fun to navigate and pick out all those little details I mentioned above. Controlling the robots in this level as a BLAST in every way possible, and I do love all the little nods and references they make back to Toy Story itself in this world. Buzz and Woody were great to have along for the ride and I really appreciated how they were actually involved in the plot points of the world (like seriously, Woody fuckin telling Young Xehanort off will forever be one of my favorite KH moments oh my god). Imo this one was for sure one of my favorites, 9/10

After that, we have Corona and I was really excited about this world and I do think they did a great job with it. The environments are lush and absolutely beautiful (as is, again, the level’s music), and there are so many fun little moments in this level (having a splash fight with Rapunzel was PURE as was the entire dancing minigame imo adorable and so much fun). Its just... idk, for some reason i feel like I wasn’t as... engaged in this world as I was with some of the others? Its more or less just the story of Tangled imo, but Sora, Donald, and Goofy are just sorta... there. Hell, there are points where the trio just up and disappears from the Tangled plot and don’t even come into play until much later on which is sorta... why? I get that ya have a lot to convey in a short amount of time, but damn if Tangled wasn’t the perfect world for a KH game and it just felt like the story of it was... not as great as it should have been? Idk maybe I just wanted more bonding between the trio and the Tangled characters, and what we got was fine but I still wanted... more . So yeah, this one gets a 6/10 from me.

Next up I went to Monstropolis and this one was also a pretty great time. Exploring the factory is a lot of fun and though it is kind of standard in terms of gameplay, everything else here is really great. The humor in this level is especially sublime and I love how the trinity trio plays off Mike, Sully, and Boo imo its pure as can be. And once again we have the Disney characters taking active engagement in the plot of the world (seriously Sully just yeeting Vanitas through several doors like he’s the lil piece of goth trash that he is is right up there with that scene of Woody and YX) So yeah not a ton to say about it, but I liked it a lot. 7/10.

After Monstropolis, I went to Arendelle and by god this world was way more than I was expecting it to be. Seriously I LOVED how the plot of Frozen worked so naturally into this level, this was honestly much better than how Corona did it if you ask me. We actually got to see moments of connection between Sora and characters like Elsa and Anna and so on and it was great. Plus oh my god that Let It Go sequence was INCREDIBLE the animation on that was simply STUNNING! As for gameplay, I gotta say it was another fun one. The ice labyrinth was sorta meh, but exploring the mountain was a great time (and led to a lot of fun snark between the Trinity Trio imo) and the snowy environments here were just beautiful. Sledding down the mountain was a blast, and having Marshmallow to help out as a brief companion was unexpected but adorable. So yeah this was another one of my absolute favs. 9/10.

After Arendelle though... things... fuckin tanked. The Caribbean was the goddamn worst part of this game for me, and not just because I haven’t seen the movies and therefore can’t really get a ton of enjoyment out of the characters and the story. Even beside that this world was just damn tedious. I thought the whole ship thing was gonna be fun at first, but then it just turned into an absolute shitshow, with enemy ships unfairly disappearing and reappearing and then completely blasting your ass (btw the ship is fuckin slow as hell so its hard to navigate (and yes I get that its a big pirate ship, but I don’t fucking care this was supposed to be fun so why isn’t it fun???) And don’t even get me started on that whole collecting white crabs bullshit imo that was just about pretty fucking pointless tbh so yeah suffice to say I didn’t have a fun time with this one. It had nice music tho I’ll give it that. And the swimming controls weren’t that bad so yeah. That’s about all the nice things I can say bout it. 3/10.

But GOD did the game ever make up for it when I got to San Fransokyo. I already really love Big Hero 6, so getting to explore the world of it was just GREAT. The fight on the bridge was a great introduction and exploring the city was AMAZING. Everything felt so HUGE and there was SO much to see (so many buildings to run up!!!). Plus the boss battle against Evil Baymax or whatever was the SHIT in this level, seriously it was so much fun. And hey, it had a really solid original story to it too! I love how the game went out of its way to give each member of Big Hero 6 so much of their original personality from the movie, and it allowed them all a chance to interact with Sora, Donald, and Goofy to really make it seem like unique and engaging bonds were being formed. This world honestly had me so invested and I loved it so much, I’d say its probably my favorite of the entire game. 10/10.

And yeah so those are all the Disney worlds. Gonna not really talk about the last two worlds cause they’re more story heavy than gameplay heavy and speaking of which... guess its about that time.

First of all, I gotta say that one of my favorite things about this game was its dialogue. Most of the VAs did a pretty damn solid job but the main characters especially so had a lot of emotion put into them. This game has so many fun little chatty moments, and the writing here is probably the most natural its ever been in a KH game. There’s so many fun little moments of sassy banter (between Sora, Donald, and Goofy in particular, seriously I could listen to those three yap at each other all goddamn day its excellent). SO much personality leaks through every character in just about every word they say and I really appreciate it and the effort put into it all!

Now with that out of the way, the story oh god the story. So I should probably say that, for a preexisting KH fan like myself, this is the KH game that was actually the easiest to understand what’s going on in? Crazy, I know, but this game actually explains most of the off the wall things that happen in it in a way that anyone could readily understand, and personally I really think that benefits it. I think the plot only really derailed itself for me like... once (the whole explanation behind Repliku jfc what a mess). But there were still a few things that the game didn’t explain that I’ll again, talk about later. As for the story itself...

One of the things i REALLY Loved about it was the character arc Sora had in this game. Riding off of DDD, the game really does set him up as the defeated underdog at the start of it and he feels bad about that and as a result you feel bad and wanna help this sad lil twink bb son get stronger!!! He just wants to help people but he can’t because he doesn’t have the power of waking but the great thing is he forces himself past that handicap and helps them anyway just by being himself and that’s beautiful. I already loved my precious sunshine son already, but this game made me absolutely adore him like seriously, he’s skyrocketed to one of my favorite characters in any fictional medium as a result of this game. He’s such a silly dork who is clearly having fun in all these Disney worlds as he’s off makin new friends, but its clear there’s a certain... anxiety lingering behind all of that. The kid as a lot of pressure on his shoulders and eventually it breaks him and that fucking scene broke me. But in the end, he still fuckin rises above it and kicks ass and then he fuckin disappears but that’s another point to bring up later on cause oh my god but basically the gist is, Sora is my absolute precious son boyo and I would gladly die for him oh my god

Donald and Goofy are also a TON of fun to watch in this game. I may crack jokes about Donald bitching at Sora a lot but you can tell he does it out of a true place of caring. Tbh there were a few Trinity Trio moments in this game that honest to god choked me up a bit, especially near the end. Mickey is sorta downplayed in this game, which is sorta whatever, but I did appreciate Riku in this game a lot (the brief spots where i got a chance to play as him were great). Kairi was... under fucking utilized again and I can’t deny that’s disappointing, and honestly same goes for Axel, though he DID have his moments, especially towards the end. And imo It was a delight to get all the other returning KH kids. Reuniting Aqua, Terra, and Ventus was beautiful, as was the reunion between Roxas, Xion, and Axel. Kinda wish we had gotten more Namine, but I’m glad she got her happy ending all the same. I also appreciate the Twilight Trio in this game, that one scene were they annoy the shit out of Ansem was the best. As for the baddies, same old same old though the game did sorta make them more interesting here and there. Xehanort’s “redemption” is sorta whatever to me, I kinda didn’t really care about what happened to him as much as I did my kids all coming together and being happy together and for the most part that’s what i got so I can’t say I didn’t walk away (mostly) happy as a result. I really fuckin do think the game could have done more with a handful of its bad guys, like they could have maybe implied more about the whole Xigbar=Luxu thing, and imo god did poor Vanitas get the short end of the stick I was expecting so much more on that front and I was sorely disappointed. But for the most part, I liked how this really was a huge KH reunion of heroes and villains alike. In that sense, it felt like one big tribute to the series’ entire history and for that, I love it.

So I guess that means the only thing I can talk about now is the ending. Oh god that ending. Fuckin thing kept me up all night long last night and had me stressed as fuck this morning while I was at work but honestly? I think I’m over it now. Yeah it is certainly a cliffhanger (especially now that we have that secret movie which raises so many more questions but at the very least it does establish that Sora isn’t dead so I can appreciate that). And hey, it implies that more Kingdom Hearts games are to come, so I can’t really be mad about that since I’m pretty much absolute KH trash at this point. But yeah, that ending got me shook and tbh I think that’s what it was supposed to to, be incredibly bittersweet and all and imo it completely succeeded in that regard.

Anyway before I go, just a few more points of disappointment I suppose that I haven’t touched on. Pete and Maleficent might as well not have even fucking been in the game for as few times as they appeared imo and the game also sorta just dropped the whole thing with Demyx and Vexen in a similar manner, as well as the whole thing about Larxene, Marluxia, Luxord, and Demyx “unlocking their inner keyblade heritage” or whatever imo game fuckin had too much KHX baiting if you ask me (that one scene where you use a bunch of KHX keyblades to murder a fuckton of heartless was really cool tho). Tbh I feel like the game had several moments of intrigue that it kinda more or less dropped the ball on, like for instance three examples in particular include that bit in Corona where Marluxia straight up knocks Sora the hell out and yeah that’s all he does, imo why even fucking bother with that when the kid just wakes up like nothing’s happened to seconds later? (to get the Trinity Trio out of the plot of Tangled, that’s what jfc), similar thing in Arendelle during the scene where Elsa freezes Anna’s heart, Sora for some reason gasps in pain and clenches his own heart at that exact same moment and the game never fucking bothers to explain why and that’s frustrating. Same thing goes for why Sora disappeared from the cover of Pooh’s book (lol guess that was fuckin foreshadowing the ending) the game offers a non explaination for it that is just... really not that conclusive so why even bother making a big deal out of it in the first place if you’re just gonna drop it? Plus there were a lot of other... smaller moments that I thought the game was gonna do so much more with but didn’t; the moment when Ven and Roxas see each other for the first time and realize they look basically the same but at no point do we actually see them exchange dialogue; Terra and Riku actually having a fucking conversation imo; same thing with any real interaction between Xion and Kairi; or how about the game not actually fucking explaining how the organization brought Xion back at all like wasn’t she a part of Sora how the hell did you do that game you have to EXPLAIN

Sigh... but anyway, even despite those frustrations, i still absolutely adored my time with KH3. Yeah like I said it wasn’t perfect, but by god was it worth the wait. The game was pure, sheer, fun and its story got me so damn emotional that I actually CRIED at several points of it even though KH has never made me legit cry before. And really? If this stupid as hell game can make this brittle old heart do that, then you know its a good one.

TLDR: Kingdom Hearts 3 is hella good, it made me cry like a little bitch, kinda fuckin dropped the ball on some points but whatever, and kept me up all goddamn night in existential dread over my precious son’s ambiguous fate. Imo fuckin 10/10 right there I love it and can’t wait to pick it up and play it again

Winter 2018 Anime Final Review

Why yes, pretty much all the Spring premieres are done (don’t even remind me haha I’m so far behind) and this is horribly late, I had a busy couple of weeks ;---; and am still struggling to catch up, but here’s my final rundown of this long slow winter! Worst to best, as always.

Dropped

Basilisk Ouka Ninpou Chou: Although I’d said I’d keep watching for the Nobunaga twist, given the onslaught of new stuff for Spring, it’s unsustainable to keep watching something so mediocre I don’t even find anything to say about it. Also Nobunaga hasn’t been mentioned in three episodes.

DUMPSTER FIRE

Darling in the Franxx: So we’re halfway through the show and still feels nothing of importance has happened, except we learned “lesbians are not viable, what a relief” and also KOKORO REALLY WANTS TO MAKE BABIES. The whole Kokoro business is very unsavory because on the one hand the writing is a dick to Walking Fat Joke Futoshi, but on the other hand Futoshi is an entitled Nice Guy who acts like Kokoro has some obligation to return his feelings, so basically everyone sucks lmao. Btw, does anyone know what happened with episode 13? I went to watch it but what I got instead was a Deadman Wonderland episode, complete with the story of Palurdo meeting Lab Experiment-turned-Beast Waifu as children and making a promise that would subsequently be forgotten until they meet again in their teenage years. Jesus, does Womenz are Beastz: The Anime have a single original idea?

How am I supposed to measure my own disinterest and contempt

This basically means I didn’t care for these shows. I don’t hate them but I was aggressively unengaged in them and I can’t really rank them from worst to best because that would imply me having any measurable emotional reaction to them

Violet Evergarden: I don’t think I have much to add about this one that I haven’t said before. Tryhard Sad Anime Girl stories rehashing old clichés with little novelty to them, with a bonus of a super poorly explained and thought out child super soldier tragic backstory that still has me ?????? The final episode has the addendum of trying to redeem That One Asshole in a “he treats her bad because he’s sad about his brother dying sob sob sob he’s totally not a jerk” and i was very annoyed by that.

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni: It’s complicated to talk about this show. I really liked the first episode, hated the 4-6, then was mostly bored by the rest of it. The whole romance angle was completely dropped in the latter half, but I’m not even sure if that’s a good thing given how tastelessly it was being handled in some moments, or a bad one given how bland everything else was. It felt like Akira’s crush on Kondo turned out to be insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It also felt like Akira was profoundly underdeveloped, and it bothered me because Kondo was developed properly. His character felt more fully realized than hers. Like idk, I just cared so little for the last few episodes and it didn’t feel like Akira’s emotional progression was very connected with the first half of the show.

Fate/Extra Last Encore: I don’t even have a screenshot. Apparently the reason the show started so late into the season is that it took a long time to produce, and apparently there are two more episodes that will be released at some point in July. But really, what matters is that I have no idea of what this show was trying to accomplish. The characters were a bunch of pieces of cardboard spouting pseudo nihilistic philosophical nonsense and I don’t even know how to describe the plot. It was generic in its Boss of the Week approach but the execution was often very flat. Definitely none of the fun from Apocrypha’s cool characters was to be had in this iteration of the franchise.

Too much iyashikei

This season we had too much iyashikei and I’m burned out. Here are the ones I didn’t hate but also wasn’t super in love with.

Miira no Kaikata: I think this show would’ve worked better as 3-minute vignettes. 20 minutes of it was a bit too much and I struggled to pay attention. I also felt the dragon and MukuMuku had very tangential roles. I don’t have a whole lot to say. It’s cute, if cute is your jam this show is for you. Connie is best smol monster.

Hakumei to Mikochi: Another cute show that gains extra points for its somewhat unique setting, beautiful color palette and picture book aesthetic and because the two main girls are great characters. I particularly liked the first and last episodes. It’s a relaxing, fun little show

Sanrio Danshi: The harbinger of feminism made into a toy commercial, while not quite iyashikei, is still a slice of life that just occassionally indulged in too much melodrama. It was nonetheless a fun little thing that managed to turn cynical consumerism into a positive message for boys: it’s okay to like non-traditionally-masculine things. One of the details I liked most was that none of the boys had to give up on their previous groups of friends even after “coming out”, Kouta’s friends and Shuu’s team were supportive of them and even participated in their dumbass musical play. Some may even read this show as a not-so-subtle allegory on homosexuality and while I don’t think this was Sanrio’s intent (their intent is to broaden their market, plain and simple) the fact that it works so well with that reading is honestly great. I had very minimal expectations for this show and I’m happy it turned out better than those.

Classicaloid 2: Classicaloid isn’t quite iyashikei either but it fits in the “didn’t love it, didn’t hate it” category. I’m a huge fan of season one, but unfortunately a big part of S2 failed to capture the magic. I think most of it was restored in the second cour, specially with brilliant episodes such as the one where Dovo-chan becomes a super-realistic painting of himself, and the last three episodes really captured what made Classicaloid great. I’ve really come to love this cast, so I wouldn’t complain if we got more seasons (please do Vivaldi!!!)

Shonen is a Good Genre, Actually

Shonen as a genre/demographic is much reviled for its repetitive clichés and childish stories, but I think we live at a time in which we can have well-executed shonen anime that, although falling for the same old clichés, have enough heart and sincerity that makes them enjoyable. This part also isn’t necessarily ranked, since my favorite one will change depending on which day you ask me

Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu: As I have mentioned before, this second season seems to be the polar opposite of the first one’s rapid pace. It’s been a while since I read the manga, but I feel like it took a lot less to get to the mid-season cutoff point there than this anime would lead you to believe, especially the training part felt excruciatingly long. NanaTai has other various flaws including its 1000% not funny harrassment jokes and the dumb introduction of quantified “power levels” (why Suzuki), but characters like Diane, King and Ban give the show a unique flavor. And I’m not even gonna pretend to be unbiased, I just love everything involving Ban, even the weird and questionable choice of bringing Elaine back. I’m excited that we’re finally approaching Escanor’s arrival.

Yowapeda Glory Road: I also forgot to grab a screenshot lmao. Yowapeda is a very particular beast, and with its episode count already in the hundreds, it’s not something I’d reccommend unless you’re super into dragged out ridiculous sports anime. This second season of Onoda’s second year has not been without its flaws either, starting with the, imho absurd persistence in making Sohoku look like underdogs even though they’re reigning champions. It’s made a lot of the first two days of the Interhigh feel a lot grimmer than this cheerful show ought to. Kaburagi is still an insufferable character, and the fact that he drags the team down doesn’t help him either, and I just wish the writers would let Best Boy Teshima win anything. I hope the second day ends on a lighter note, because the gloom and doom is making this a less enjoyable watch than it should be

Mahoutsukai no Yome: I feel a little better about this one knowing the final was anime-original, but at the same time I’m beyond livid with how it was wrapped up. I loved the second half of the series because of how well-written and emotional Chise’s growth was, and everything up to her embracing of Cartaphilus’s curse was a beautiful display of her strength and will to live. What I’m not here for is that asspull wedding whatever that makes no sense in the context of the previous events, especially because after the fact, Elias’s attempt to kill Stella is swept under the rug. This could’ve been my favorite show of the season without that bullshit ending and while I don’t regret watching it, it leaves me with a sad feeling of what could have been

Best of the season

Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens: It had a slow start, but with its endearing cast and well-developed character relationships, HTR won me over, especially the last quarter. The animation was veeery barebones, but Lin and Bamba’s charisma and their organically developed relationship carried the show to be one of the most enjoyable of the season. I also really appreciate the fact that the series includes a gay couple with an adopted daughter and that Lin’s crossdressing is never used as a joke or treated as a character flaw or a “phase”. I love stories about found families and I’d love to see more of this gang fighting crime and doing shady business in their city of assassins.

Garo: Vanishing Line: This iteration of Garo had a somewhat slow start, but boy did it pick up steam in the second half. The action was great -the final fight against King had some incredible stylistic choices, the characters’ journeys felt complete and very human and the story was interesting and different enough from other Garo to not feel repetitive, yet with enough Garoisms that made it feel connected to everything else. Like I said, I love stories about found families, so the way Sophie found a home with Gina, Luke and Sword by the end was very touching. Watching Sophie’s journey has been a treat, and I’m immensely happy that this wasn’t a Guren no Tsuki disaster, but was more in line with the excellence of Honoo no Kokuin.

Gakuen Babysitters: This was the huge surprise of the season for me, I almost expected it to be pretty dull. Instead it turned out to be super cute and extremely heartwarming. It had a couple of duds here and there, mostly the not-actually-a-pedophile joke character and the early love triangle skits, but the former disappeared and the latter was vastly improved in the second half of the show. I wish Ryuichi’s grief had been dealt with a bit more, but I think what they did show was very well executed and empathetic. And the portrayal of the kids felt very realistic, including both children’s most adorable and most obnoxious behaviors. KIRIN IS BEST GIRL

Card Captor Sakura Clear Card arc: I have expressed some complaints and dissatisfactions with this sequel all through the season. Mostly in regards to the new cards and how the old ones seem to have been forgotten (also the lazy designs of the new cards). In spite of that, Sakura hasn’t lost any of its heart in these 20 years, the characters are still the kids we grew up with. It is an overwhelmingly cheerful and positive show, from Sakura and Syaoran’s shyly developing relationship, to the hopefulness of Sakura’s magic and just the simple day to day life of Sakura and her friends. In spite of all its flaws, Sakura is still my favorite show of the season and I’m happy we get to spend one more season with these characters. Just please give me more Yue???

Ooooof, finally I’m done with this! PLEASE LET’S NOT TALK ABOUT THE 20+ SHOWS I’M SAMPLING FOR SPRING AHAHAHAHA. There’s too much anime. Anime must be stopped, immediately. You seem like someone who isn't new to fandom and I have to ask: have you ever had the experience of seeing a large chunk of a show's fanbase actively campaign against a spinoff? i.e. is what's going down with The Blacklist a unique case?

*rickety grandma voice* I’ve seen some crazy-ass shit, son.

Jokes aside, yes, to me it is rather unique, anon, because TBL/R is a unique creative catastrophe. More rambling and complaining behind the cut, as usual:

I’ve encountered several spin-offs, but their “birth” and transition were never like this. e.g.

Cheers →FrasierCSI → CSI: MiamiThe Practice →Boston LegalJAG →NCISBreaking Bad →Better Call Saul(Daredevil →The Punisher)

These represent different types. Frasier, Boston Legal, and Better Call Saul are the type created specifically to “live on” after the mother show’s passing and are “character anchored”. CSI: Miami, NCIS, and The Punisher (has yet to launch hence the brackets) are the type created to co-exist with the mother show and are chiefly “concept anchored” (The Punisher is a hybrid, imo).

Not one of these did to its beloved “parent” what TBL/R has so carelessly inflicted on TBL, though. No decent spin-off would, imo. I believe this is the main root of the ugly backlash we see in our fandom, most of which is justified (bitterness and quitting) and the rest is most definitely not (e.g. online harassment and bashing of those involved with the show - seriously, get a grip people).

TBL/R was, to push our metaphor, not a result of natural labor but one that was induced repeatedly over a torturously extended period of time. We were standing around, watching on helplessly as the mother show was being turned inside out to give life to something underdeveloped and unworthy. At least Liz had a cute baby at the end of her induced labor. All we got out of this “meta pregnancy” was a lousy spin-off and our favorite show put on life support. In other words, a lot was sacrificed here for very little.

Spin-offs attempt to milk either a successful blueprint/concept or a successful character. TBL/R claims to have both yet has neither. In what universe does Tom count as a charismatic, heroic, layered eyeball magnet creation? I haven’t the faintest, but I’ve always suspected Eisendrath commutes to work from a fucked up parallel reality and now I think I have the ultimate proof).They took an already failing and abused “magic box” format (a conflated, vague “mysterious past” and a tedious, mostly meaningless “search for answers”), planted the shallowest and most repelling character into it, crammed it with clichés and retcons, then sprinkled it with some incest. Who thought this was a foolproof recipe for success and why? TBL has been dragging its feet to reveal its simplest of answers for almost 4 years now, and you’re offering me the watered down version of the same thing sans Spader? Please. Please have some respect for your audience. Spin-offs are potentially lucrative investments precisely bc they aim to draw on the parent show’s established loyal fanbase. TBL/R actively alienates and insults this base, which is so uniquely ass-backwards, they should create a special category for it at the Emmys called “the don'ts”.

Audience sympathy is a crucial element overlooked here as well. TBL has badly undermined sympathy for its own protagonist to make spin-off boy more palatable. She was made to forgive and “endorse” him in the most repelling way (I dabble in some questionable fictional stuffbut heavily pregnant Liz kneeling down in front this Petri dish of human failures will forever live on in my memory as the grossest image I’ve ever seen) while Tom remained just as unworthy and irrelevant as ever (they wrote in the pregnancy just to keep him as “the father” which is the ultimate act of creative desperation as far as I’m concerned).

Other characters were similarly co-opted to similarly alienating results (see Cooper, for example). The poorly executed “strategic demonizing” Red has been subjected to has backfired as well. Despite his various transgressions, Red is the #1 “sympathy earner” of the show bc James’ portrayal oozes pathos. Red is a beautiful sufferer and meticulous self-torturer, so anybody repeatedly kicking him will come across as unsympathetic at best. Stomping on him to prop up a character who has failed to express even a fraction of contrition tanked even before it began in earnest. Now I think it is way over the line, borderline abusive and so nonsensical, fans are understandably angry and scream enough!

On top of that, Tom’s spin-off buddies are also characters Red’s original “code of conduct” would never have allowed to live. Scottie almost killed Liz and Agnes, then shrugged it off and tried to blame Red. Solomon tortured Dembe, poisoned her infant granddaughter, and was about to cut up pregnant Liz in front of Red when Dembe arrived to save the day. He didn’t express much remorse for it, either, yet it was beloved Mr. Kaplan who ended up with bullet in her face while these so-called characters waltzed off into a new show titled Redemption. Fucking amazing. I don’t care about their “redemption” one bit. I was never actually invited to care (see the lack of remorse issue), I was only expected to because… again why? idk. I was, however, invited to expect their swift demise but everything established in S1 is either forgotten or rewritten now, it seems, and TBL/R’s existence is a symbol of this very fact. It didn’t grow naturally out of TBL. It is a parasite that chewed its way through it and now is struggling to stand on its own. Its struggle makes me happy but also sad, to be honest.

Fans - not all but a lot - are upset (do not mistake this for passion anymore, this is just plain anger now) because this is not how spin-offs are supposed to work at all. They are supposed to add to a beloved piece of work, not encroach on it and on characters and relationships we actually love and care about.

Hi Harry 👋🏽 : about SNL.

Harry styles has a magnificent, gigantic stage presence and i'm proud of him. That being said, I cant even begin to imagine what it must feel like. The buzz, the excitement, the nerves, the fear. All of it is natural and helping him be what be wants to be. He's being 100% genuine, honest with himself, and honestly; he's experimenting and acing it so far. He's got a big hype about him, which adds up to an astronomical amount of nerves, but harry is a full blown artist that can shake them up pretty well. And even if he might look scared or nervous can I just say that's its ok and I still support what you're doing? Can i just say how brave you are for doing you so unapologetically? How proud that makes me? His voice is like silk, and he's got so much control over it. He's a true performer: seeing an obstacle and analysing 10 different ways on how to avoid it, and quickly coming up with melodies and changes that suit him best on the spot. SOTT? Majestic. The rise always gives me goosebumps. Now, (based on the fact that he kept moving away from the microphone and sorta toying with his ear-piece, and not singing some lines, and also dodging the tricky high note which is smart on his part) i think there was something. Maybe sound? Personally to me the band was louder than him and if that was happening in his in-ears as well then that means trouble. It's incredibly uncomfortable to sing without properly listening to yourself or having an instrument channel very loud, when it's the instrument that you don't want to be hearing. I don't know if it was just to the outside or if it was in his ear too, but he seemed a bit uncomfortable. Needless to say, he dominated it. Made his breaks look so natural and the only sign that he was not at all on the same page with what was going on, was his strange face and pose at the end. And even then it might just be me overreacting to things. First time performing a very demanding song live. First time performing solo. Too many firsts, and Harry controlled them to perfection. If he WAS uncomfortable I sure hope he's not beating his cute curly head up about it, because it was lovely to watch and to experience from home, cant begin to imagine what it must have been like live. I'm very proud and happy and I hope he is too. ESNY: wonderful! Very cute! Very quaint! I don't know what it was but the song made me calm down. Soothing and the vocals are so amazing. The harmonies were so good, i love a good harmony and I love how it just sounded like a perfect choir singing in a big room. There's something i find beautiful about that. Seeing harry also have a first with playing guitar live on stage made my heart so full. I think most of you know harry + playing guitar or any instrument is a big deal to me. He's a very complete artist and i'm so jealous, i wish i was as smart and witty and talented as he is. I can only wish. I felt like the lyrics, without even understanding much, spoke of some sort of epiphany? Like he had pain but in that pain there was enlightenment? Or maybe something that expressed growth. Like having a nice summer away from home and being sad its over but happy that it happened, and glad that you're now something else cause of it. Maybe it was a thing, maybe an emotion, it felt like something had been discovered and, though it might not have been a good thing at the moment, you've grown and now you see it from a new perspective. Also, i might be looking too much into this idk, i just got that vibe from it specially after hearing the "feels like talking to a wall" bit. I gotta say: not mad the song is short? I kind of like that? Balances out with SOTT and I really think Harry is a storyteller so take this as that one very artistic chapter that had just 3 lines in that book you read over the summer between junior and senior year. The fact that it's short also speaks to the vibe the song gave me. It's deep, no doubt about that, and there's raw emotion, but sometimes you don't need 17 pages to say the whole story. Harry knows this. And as a true storyteller, knows when to stop the tale and jump off into another tangent in the right moment. Leaving us at the edge of our seats wondering where is he going now? Only for us to realise at the end of the tale that all those tangents actually connected. It's not mindless stories, it's one big story being told piece by piece in an order that makes you think. I'll finish this bit off by saying my fave phrase: MAYBE IM LOOKING TOO MUCH INTO THIS Anyways i'm proud of harry and very happy to see him be happy. The thought of him having the time of his life doing his thing, and smiling from ear to ear cause he's doing it how he likes it and sharing it with whoever he wants, makes me happy. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON MY THOUGHTS OF HIM AS A HOST! He's perfect. Witty and always on his toes never letting a moment go empty with awkward silence, and keeping his mouth shut JUST enough for comedic effect and not for comedic flunk. I think Harry is beyond our times. I think he's doing something different and it's working. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's called being unique, maybe it's just that i like him too much, maybe it's the hype. It's not easy to do this whole rebirth thing. Whatever it is... Harry Styles has it, is doing it, and will continue to do it. And I cant wait.
