The Contract

Summary: Medieval AU: Sara and Nyssa team up to stop an assassination of a king. Along the way, they grow close.

Sara came to the kingdom on a transfer, eager to prove herself and get out of the shadow of Lord Green. She quickly fell in with the other Knights and made herself home eventually leading a squad of her own.

One night they were enjoying some off time sharing ale from a confiscated keg.

Vic took a gulp before gesturing to Sara with her mug. “Oh yeah and you best be extra nice to the blacksmith in the shop at the end of Starling District. Nyssa makes great stuff for a price but can also kick your ass if you piss her off.”

Sara looked intrigued, capping off the woman's mug with more ale. “Oh?”

She nodded, taking a drink. “Yeah, except she doesn’t get pissed off or at least I've never seen her get mad. She’ll just wallop you to the ground with that annoyingly calm face. What about you, Gibson?”

Gibson raising his mug in agreement. “Nope on the mad, but yes on the beatings. Damn, it was great to see Lord what’s his face, the one with the giant mustache, get knocked out.”

“Yeah, so far none of the lords say anything ‘cause they’re too embarrassed to be beaten by a lowly blacksmith, and a lady one at that. Though rumor has it the King has a soft spot for her and that’s why he turns a blind eye to their complaints.”

“Either that, or whatever thing she has with the Spymaster."

Vic rolled her eyes. "Oh don't start with that thing again, Gibson. You were drunk off your ass."

"Hey, just because I couldn't walk in straight line doesn't mean I wouldn't recognize her or the Spymaster! They're scary and very hard to forget."

Vic punched Gibson in the arm and then turned to Sara. "So yeah, you be extra nice to her, Captain, unless you wanna get your ass kicked.”

Sara took a drink and made a note to visit the infamous blacksmith.

Several weeks later and as she was making rounds, Sara heard an angry raised voice coming from a shop and she approached it, curious. A pompous Lord with two men behind him was gesturing wildly at a woman wielding a hammer.

“Do you who I am? I’m not paying for this!” The man yelled at a woman who looking unimpressed.

“Than you’re not getting the sword.”

“You-”

Before he could land a fist on her, the woman countered with her hammer to his stomach making him topple over. “Honestly Lord Pendalton, this behavior is beneath your station.”

The other men approached her threateningly but before Sara could even run over to confront them, they were all flat on their back, groaning in pain.

The woman looked down at all of the men, crossing her arms again. “Really, just pay what you owe me and you will have your family sword back. Otherwise, I will crush something you value.”

She tossed her hammer which landed dangerously close to the Lord’s hip. He begrudgingly dug out his money pouch and threw it at her. The blacksmith caught it and, after checking it was the right amount, retrieved a box with the Lord’s sword. “Pleasure doing business, sir.”

The man gingerly got up and grabbed the box. “This isn’t over, blacksmith!”

She smiled. “Next time send at least ten men. The five you sent the other day were barely a warm up.”

He scrambled away with his goons. After a moment of watching them run away, she shook her head and went back into her shop.

Sara picked her jaw back up and approached the smithery.

The blacksmith looked up to see Sara enter. “Hello. You’re the new knight, I presume?”

"Yes, I'm Sara. What fighting style was that? I've never seen anything like it."

Sara stuck her hand out in greeting. The blacksmith looked at it before shaking it with a strong firm grip.

"Well met. I'm Nyssa and as for my style it's...an old family style. Useful against bandits and the like."

"Would you be willing to teach me some of it?"

Nyssa tilted her head, a surprised and amused smile on her face. "You're the first knight to ask me that. But sure, why not."

Sara huffed as she ended up on her back again while Nyssa grinned down at her. "Not bad, for a beginner."

"Oh shut up."

Nyssa laughed as she helped Sara up. The two had been meeting every now and than for a few months. At first it was only sparring but soon led to conversation during breaks though Sara noticed Nyssa was extremely reluctant to say anything about her past before she moved to the kingdom.

Not keen on driving the woman away, Sara stuck to safe topics. "So I saw Lord Pendalton sporting another black eye the other day."

Nyssa rolled her eyes as she let out an exasperated huff. "That idiot again tried to insist he didn't need to pay for his weapons."

As Sara moved back to a neutral position, she enjoyed listening to Nyssa tell the whole story while observing the other woman's gestures. Nyssa ended her story with a satisfied nod.

"With the kind of training you have clearly have, how come you never joined the guard?"

Nyssa scoffed. "Not interest in fighting anymore than I have to and I don't want to deal with even more bruised egos."

Sara grinned. "You seem to enjoy tossing me and my ego onto the ground though."

Nyssa shrugged shamelessly. "You asked for it."

She cracked her neck and rolled her shoulders before gesturing to Sara. "So, round two?"

With Sara's increased duties, the training and sparring sections became fewer in between but Sara still found excuses to visit the blacksmith.

"Hiya Nyssa, whatcha doing?"

Nyssa looked up with a smile before frowning as she observed the Knight favoring her right side. "What happened to you?"

"Nothing!" At Nyssa's skeptical gaze she caved. "Okay fine, I got kicked by a spooked horse. Doc said I'll heal up fine with rest."

Nyssa placed her tools down and started rummaging in her cupboard. "Sit down. If you insist on visiting me as often as you do, I rather you be well."

Sara winced as she sat down on the chair, her ribs not appreciating the movements.

Nyssa finally found the small container of ointment. "Here, should help you heal faster."

Sara shook her head. "I'm fine."

Nyssa pressed the container into Sara's hands. "I insist. I can't teach you anything if you crumble after a single punch."

"I don't-"

Nyssa shook her head. "No arguments from you or I'm banning you from my shop, Sir Knight."

Sara huffed and took the container. She opened it and quickly closed it. "Whew, that stinks!"

Nyssa picked her tools back up and got to work. "You get used to it."

"I think it's a bit concerning you're actually used to this smell."

Nyssa stiffened before shrugging. "I deal with hot metal and heavy tools as my trade. Accidents happen."

Sara noticed her hesitation and changed the subject. "So were you the one who gave knocked out Pendalton's tooth?"

Nyssa was irritated. The king had put in a new order for swords with an impossible deadline. She was not looking forward to the conversation where she would only be able to turn in half of the ordered swords.

Nyssa took the heavy hammer and pounded on the hot blade this and that to beat the impurities out of the metal.

Nyssa was so absorbed in her work she didn’t notice the blonde watching her and startled when she finally noticed the knight leaning against the wall. Placing the unfinished blade to the side, she wiped the sweat from her brow. “I didn’t realize I worked so slow that the King needed to send someone to observe me.”

Sara raised her hands up. “He didn’t send me, my practice is done for the day.”

Nyssa breathed in deeply before responding, forcing her fists to open. It wasn’t the blonde’s fault after all. She gestured to the quarter filled crate. “Well, what do you want? As you can see, I am far behind schedule.”

The knight approached the blacksmith cautiously. “Nyssa.”

The dark haired woman took a deep breath again. “Sorry, sorry. I’m just, this would have been much easier if - nevermind. Was there something you need?”

Sara paused for a moment before pulling out her dagger sheepishly.

“Again?!”

Nyssa took the blade and looked at all the dents and scratches. “What have you been up to, Sir Knight? Fighting a dragon would have done less damage than this!”

Sara scratched the back of her head and looked elsewhere. “Missions.”

Nyssa continued to grumble as she proceeded to repair the blade as best she could, ignoring the very important order from the King. “This is the fourth time in a month that you’ve brought me such a damaged weapon! What is the King sending you knights against that would result in this type of damage? Nevermind, secrets or something else probably. I don’t need to know.”

Sara hung back, leaning against the wall again. She was quite certain that Nyssa had nearly forgotten her existence now that she was entirely absorbed in her work.

“There, almost good as new.” Nyssa returned the dagger to Sara."Try not to fight a tree again.”

She turned back to the unfinished sword she was working on earlier.

“Thanks,” Sara took a breath. “you know the grand tournament’s in two weeks time.”

“Yes, business will be quite busy then. I shall be up to my eyeballs of dented blades, panicked squires, and rude newcomers.”

Sara deflated a bit. “Oh, you won’t be able to make it?”

Nyssa shrugged as she beat the blade into submission with her hammer. “I’m usually much too busy. Some drunk nobleman will attempt to burn down my shop if I’m not here to fix his armor or whatnot and I would rather that not happen again.”

“What!”

Nyssa shook her head. “It was before you came here, Sara. Nothing to worry about. Besides, I can take care of myself.”

“But-”

“Shouldn’t you go beat up some training dummies or whatever you knights do?”

Sara huffed.”I have one more request.”

“No free swords.”

Sara laughed and paused to take a breath. “May I have your favor.”

Nyssa’s dropped her the hammer and turned around quickly, looking at the nervous knight. “What?”

“The real reason the dagger is always busted is because I had been hacking at a tree with it.”

“A tree?!”

“I just really wanted to see you.”

“But, a tree?!”

“Not one of my finer ideas, but you know how hard it is to find excuses to see you without becoming suspicious? Though I suspect half my squad knows anyway given they tease me all the time.”

Nyssa used her hand to cover her face, a chuckle surfacing. “I’m flattered, but I’m sure you have many ladies more then willing to throw their favors and themselves at you.”

“True, but none of them are you.”

The blacksmith rolled her eyes and turned around, picking up the fallen hammer. “Now I know you’re teasing me.”

Nyssa stiffened when she felt the knight place a hand on her shoulder. “At least consider coming? Even for a little bit. Anyhow, I’ll leave you to it. Good day, Nyssa.”

Nyssa worked absentmindedly as she turned the offer in her head. She finally nodded to herself to allot two hours to the tournament. That should give her time to watch several of the Knight’s matches and get back to her shop before someone tried to burn it down again.

The blacksmith froze momentarily before she shook her head and released a huff of frustration. Nyssa turned around slowly facing the dozen swords facing her. “This is ridiculous.”

“Hello, daughter.”

She rolled her eyes at her father, who was watching her with an infuriating smirk, and crossed her arms. Her hand tightened around the hammer’s handle, anticipating an attack.

“If you’re going to kill me, can you get on with it? I’ve had a very tiring day and wouldn’t mind taking seven of you with me.”

Her father smiled and signaled to the rest of the assassins to sheathed their weapons and leave them. Once they were alone, he chuckled. “Seven only? My my, you have grown rusty. But no, this not a contract. Consider this a courtesy call since I was in the area about a different matter. A contract has been drawn against the king of this land, not one of our own.”

Nyssa shrugged. “There have always been attempts on his life and all have failed. The king has an excellent spymaster. Why is this one different?”

“Ah, but this one is lead by the Magician.”

Nyssa stiffened, her arms falling to her side. “He still lives?”

“Unfortunately. Here’s the information we were able to extract from one of his agents before he expired.”

He placed a scroll on a table. Nyssa frowned though did not move to take it. “Why are you telling me this? I’m no longer one of your instruments to command.”

Her Father’s smile turned a bit sad. “You were always one of my best. I’m only letting you know since you’ve decided to settle here as I’m sure a king’s death would be quite disruptive to your business. Good night and good hunting, Daughter.”

He left the scroll on a table and the League disappeared as quietly as they came. Nyssa stared at the rolled up parchment for a long moment before shaking her head with an annoyed huff and snatched the document up.

“Damn him.”

At the tournament while they were waiting for the signal for the parade of contestants to start, Sara looked expectantly at the stands searching for a certain dark haired woman.

“I think you should really pay more attention to who your opponents are, Cap, rather than your missing lady love. This pining is getting so sad to watch.”

She rolled her eyes at the snickering among her squad. “Shut up, I’m not pining.”

“That would have almost been convincing if you didn’t mope for the rest of the day after coming back empty handed from the pretty blacksmith.”

The snickering morphed into full laughter as Sara huffed. She was saved from replying as the horns sounded announcing the start of the parade.

“Go get ‘em, Captain! Make a good show so your lady love regrets rejecting you!”

Sara gave them all the middle finger as she rode away.

Nyssa carefully made her way through the crowd, closer to where the noblemen were seated and more importantly, the king. She had quietly dispatched several of the assassins she found mingled in the crowd, carefully staging the still warm corpses as if they were passed out drunk. If her Father’s information was still accurate, they would strike him at the pinnacle of the tournament when the king would award the winner. It was so typical for the Magician to make his assassinations as loud and flashy as possible. She paused to watch Sara as she rode on her horse, waving at the crowd. Nyssa faintly grinned at the woman before she shook her head and continued on her mission. She still had much to do.

Sara made quick work of her first several opponents while giving the audience the show they craved. Her next match was against an unknown fighter dressed completely in black and unknown crest on his shield. His fighting style was an unusual one she had only encountered with one other person. They circled each other warily, testing each other’s defenses. She furrowed her brow recognizing the attack style and wondered if he knew Nyssa. He suddenly lunged and Sara, recognizing the move, countered his sword and barely avoided the hidden blade popping out of his side.

“What the hell, that's against the rules!”

The man sighed exasperatedly. “Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag now. And it was going so well too.”

He raised his sword high in the air.

Arrows released aiming right for the King.

They slammed harmlessly into the throne as Nyssa yanked the King off the throne. She threw him to the floor and dodged several more arrows shot at them. “Go!”

Sara’s instincts kicked in and she rushed at the man, shield up. He gave up all pretense of holding back and they fought fiercely. The spectators fled as the man’s followers lit fires in the stands causing chaos and confusion.

Nyssa’s eyes widened when she saw Sara engage with the Magician and quickly parried a blade retaliating with her wrist blade into her enemy’s chest. She ran through the flaming platform, ducking and slicing through enemies to get to the edge of the seating platform and jumped down into the fighting area, rolling to disperse her momentum.

Sara held her own admirably though she was wary of more hidden blades. She jumped back to avoid the knife attached to his boot when he tried to kick her.

The man threw reached into his pocket only to cry out in pain as a dagger lodged into his back.

Sara quickly followed by stabbing him in the chest. His followers cried out in disbelief that their Lord dropped his weapon, his hands scrabbling futilely at the sword impaling him.

She yanked her blade out of the dying man to face the woman running toward her, but lowered her sword as her jaw dropped. “Nyssa?!”

“Later, Sara. We have a small army to defeat right now!”

Nyssa grabbed another dagger from her belt and quickly jammed it into the Magician’s skull, killing him instantly and making his followers roar even louder.

Nyssa and Sara stood back to back, surrounded by fire, smoke, and angry assassins all looking for revenge.

“Oh, we’re definitely going to talk about this, Nyssa!”

“Careful of their blades, they’re coated in poison.”

Nyssa leaned back to avoid an assassin’s blade  and jammed upwards with her wrist knife into the assassin’s neck.

“Good to know! How the fuck do they have so many hidden blades and where are they hiding them them all?!”

Sara raised her shield to block another sword before using it to push the assassin away and stabbing the man in the stomach.

“Wrist, side, boots, three spares- get down!”

The knight ducked as Nyssa threw another a dagger that flew over the blonde’s head to bury deep into another assassin’s head.

“Little too close for comfort there, Nyssa! I already had my haircut a fortnight ago!”

“Oh hush!”

Together, the two made quick work of the rest of the assassins as the arena burned around them.

“Nyssa, we gotta go!”

“One moment.”

Nyssa crouched by the Magician’s corpse and yanked out the knife from his skull. She wrapped it in a strip of clothing and nodded to Sara. They raced through the burning masonry and made it out of a side door.

It was pure chaos outside as everyone scrambled to put out the fire before it spread and to treat the various injuries.

Nyssa moved to blend in with the crowd when she felt a hand grasp her wrist. “Wait, Nyssa.”

The blacksmith looked down at the hand holding her. She could break out of the hold quite easily. Nyssa looked up. “Later, Sara. I'll contact you.”

The knight paused before nodding and letting go. “I’ll hold you to it, Nyssa.”

She briefly watched Nyssa disappear into the crowd before running toward her squad and taking control of the situation.

Two weeks later, Sara found herself on a narrow path going up a mountain. She looked down at the map and note she founded in the abandoned blacksmith shop. The knight placed her hand on the hilt of her sword as she reached the ridge. At the edge, she could see the castle.

“I must admit, I’m surprised to see you here, Sara.”

Sara looked to her side to see Nyssa standing next to her. “Who are you?”

Nyssa shrugged. “Nyssa Raatko, a simple blacksmith who moved into the kingdom about seven years ago.”

“And the truth?”

There was a long silence as Nyssa wrestled with what to say. Finally, she reached a decision. “Nyssa Al Ghul, former assassin in service to Ra’s Al Ghul, the Demon.”

Sara froze as she stared at Nyssa. Everyone had heard of the elusive Demon and his elite company of assassins.

Nyssa nodded at the reaction and turned to leave. “I will leave the kingdom immediately. As far as I know, there are no further contracts on your King’s head so he should be safe for the time being. The persons who commissioned the contract have been dealt with and it is voided.”

She paused when Sara asked her, “Why did you save the King?”

“This kingdom was my home and I have no grievance against him. I see no reason for him to die.”

“Than stay?”

Nyssa turned to face Sara who gave a cautious smile. “Former right? I’m still wrapping my head around that someone could actually leave the Demon’s company. It’d be better for the Kingdom to have someone with your skills as an ally. So Nyssa Raatko, could we maybe take conversation to somewhere warmer?”

Sara presented a hand to Nyssa who, after a moment, grasped the other woman’s hand. “I’d like that.”

What was it like working with Heath Ledger as the Joker?

Christian Bale: Our first scene was in an interrogation room together, and I saw that he’s a helluva actor who’s completely committed to it and totally gets the tone that Chris [Nolan] is trying to create with this. We’re not going for actors revealing their enjoyment of playing a wacky caricature. We’re treating this as serious drama. You go into character and you stay in the character. I love that. I find that so ridiculous that I love it, and I take that very seriously. Heath was definitely embracing that. When he was in the makeup and the garb he was in character the whole time; and when he took it off he was absolutely fantastic company to be around.

As you see in the movie, Batman starts beating the Joker and realizes that this is not your ordinary foe. Because the more I beat him the more he enjoys it. The more I’m giving him satisfaction. Heath was behaving in a very similar fashion. He was kinda egging me on. I was saying, “You know what, I really don’t need to actually hit you. It’s going to look just as good if I don’t.” And he’s going, “Go on. Go on. Go on….” He was slamming himself around, and there were tiled walls inside of that set which were cracked and dented from him hurling himself into them. His commitment was total.

Were you ever worried about being upstaged?

Bale: No, not at all. Because it was exactly the point that I had a problem with in all of the other Batman movies. Especially after reading Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One and various other graphic novels. I asked myself, “Well, how come it’s always been that he’s the most boring character?” I’d never found him to be intriguing at all. Whereas these graphic novels depicted him as by far the most fascinating of them. I feel like we gained that back with Batman Begins — that he’s a character with substance. So I have no problem with him competing with somebody else. Because that can only make for a better movie, if you have these other fascinating characters arriving on the scene, too.

What informed Heath Ledger’s performance?

Christopher Nolan: Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, these kinds of punk influences were some of the things we talked about. We also talked about the character of Alex in A Clockwork Orange. He’s very anarchic and yet somehow has great charisma, both in the book and in the film. We talked about a lot of different influences, and he talked about an extraordinarily diverse set of influences like ventriloquist dummies. The way they would talk and the way they would move and all kinds of peculiar ideas that I wasn’t really able to get a handle on until I saw him start to perform the scenes, and start to show how the character moved and how the character gestured and how the character spoke, with this extraordinarily unpredictable voice. The range of the voice, from its highest pitch to its lowest pitch, is very extreme, and where it shifts is unpredictable and sudden.

The thing with the tongue was…he had this prosthetic that was covering his lower lip and it would come unglued sometimes. I’d seen him sort of sticking it back with his tongue, and it was only after a few weeks of shooting that I realized that wasn’t what he was doing, that he had started to adopt that actually as part of the character. It was an interesting balance, editing the performance, because he has all kinds of interesting facets, all kinds of mannerisms and things. What I like about them all is they all feel that they come from the character. They don’t feel like actorly touches. I read them as genuinely part of the fabric of a real human being.

You’ve gone on record as saying you weren’t a huge fan of comic books. What attracted you to The Dark Knight?

Heath Ledger: Yeah. The only reason I wasn’t [was] I grew up in a household of girls. So there were very few Batman comic books lying around. There [was] mainly Archie. So that’s probably the only reason why I never grew up reading Batman.

But I really loved Batman Begins; and the character of the Joker was just too good to turn down. I’ve said this before, but…if Tim Burton was doing The Dark Knight and asked me to play the Joker I wouldn’t have taken it. Because to try and even touch what Jack Nicholson did in Tim Burton’s world would be a crime. So when Chris [Nolan] came to me, and…I knew how Chris was. He had already set up the world for me. I’d seen what world it was that I would be playing in. So I knew it was open for a fresh interpretation. I also instantly kind of had something up my sleeve, which happened to be exactly what Chris was kind of looking for. We sat down and kind of shared ideas, and they were the same. So we just went with it

Kiru bounced her leg, growing antsy. The pit in her stomach that had formed when she arrived has been filled with the prickly thorns of impatience. She’d been in the waiting room for what felt like actual years. The rest of the students had slipped into a sedentary state, idly checking their watches or cleaning their nails, or even just staring at the wall. Every so often, someone would jerk their head, fighting off the tendrils of sleep seeping into their bodies.

"STUDENTS!" the over-enthusiastic voice crackled over the intercom, jolting the examinees out of their stupor. "Prepare yourselves for the most dangerous exam of your lives! This exam is fraught with peril, fear, and…" The voice, who Kiru supposed was a woman, trailed off. "Buckskin, what's another word for danger?" 

"Er, maybe it'd be best to get to the exam part, Miss Laccadaisie." A soft voice (Buckskin, apparently) replied.

"Ah." There was a pause, then a scraping sound, like the microphone was being pushed across the table. "Your turn, then." 

Buckskin sighed. "Anywho. Students, pay attention to this bit. Your entrance exam will be given in the form of an obstacle race." Low whispers snaked across the room. Some students, like Tokachi and Hiraku, brightened. Their quirks were well suited for a race. The others looked deflated, Kiru among them. How was she supposed to show off her quirk in an obstacle race?

"Some of you may be feeling downcast," Buckskin said as if reading her thoughts, "but don't fret. We've taken care to ensure that all quirks will be usable." The room let out a collective sigh of relief. 

"You will be scored in three categories. The first: heroics, which is measured by how many enemies you defeat and bystanders you save. The second: speed, measured by how fast you defeat each obstacle. The third: co-operation." Kiru raised an eyebrow.

"You will be taking the exam with an assigned partner."

...

Oh boy.

Cries of indignation filled the room.

"What?! This a group project?!"

"I hardly know anyone here!"

"Oh...what if I'm no help?"

Laccadaisie cleared her throat pointedly. Everyone quieted down immediately. Buckskin muttered a quiet thanks, then continued. "Your pairs will be displayed on the screen to the right, and then you may leave through the door on the left. Remember, your points are cumulative, so don't try to sabotage your partner." He coughed. "Er, we wish you all the best of luck.

"And don't forget to have fun!" Laccadaisie chimed in. And with a click, the intercom shut off.

Silence.

Kutou was the first to pipe up. "Whoever gets assigned with me, you better not expect me to carry you." 

"Vhy vould anyone trrrrust you enough to carrrry zem?" A girl with purple hair and grey skin muttered. 

The screen on the right flashed. 

TAKAKUTOU SHAKOU & TOKACHI AMEKO

Kutou stood up and trudged her way over to the door. "Come one, bunny girl. Let's get this done." Tokachi stood up begrudgingly, glaring with all the powers of Hell at Kutou's retreating back. Kiru whistled lowly.

 She never wanted to be on the receiving end of that glare.

The two of them slipped out of the room, and after that people started trickling out into the most important moment of their careers. The screen flashed brightly, sealing each pair's dates.

 With each person that left, the tension grew heavier and heavier until Kiru could practically taste it. Her potential partner options grew slimmer and slimmer. She had a sneaking suspicion who hers was gonna be, but she kept praying it wouldn't be so. Soon everyone had left except for…

She hadn't even bothered to learn his name. Why waste time and energy getting to know someone you'd never plan on talking to by your own free will?

The look on his face told her that her line of thinking was paralleled. 

She sighed. "Well, howdy doody, partner? What's your name? I didn't catch it over the sound of your stupidity whilst you were preening earlier."

He scoffed and pointed to the screen.

KANZOU KANEDA & KOTTOBA KIRU

       

           "Personally, I'd rather avoid speaking to you more than is necessary," he drawled. "Don't want to give the impression that I tolerate you." 

             Kiru rolled her eyes. "Your loss, McSalty, you're missing out on a stellar personality." She strode over to the door and opened it, giving him a comically over-the-top bow. "Ladies first." 

             "What an elementary insult."

             "Honey, if you thought that was an offence, you've never looked in a mirror." She shut the door behind her. Kanzou opened his mouth, probably to give some poorly thought out retort, but was cut off by a rather distracting explosion. 

               Kiru ducked instinctively and turned her attention to the scene before her. Several surprisingly human-sized robots were darting around; breaking windows, throwing around bricks, and harassing passerby. There were screams of citizens (which she hoped were simulated) echoing around. Above them all, a significantly larger robot floated above the chaos, clearly meant to be the final boss.

                She whistled. "They really went all out, didn't they?" Silence. "Alright then. Can you handle a couple of robots while I do some rescues?" 

                "Let's just get this over with." He rushed off and started hurling...sugar? At the robots? How was that supposed to help? 

She shrugged and ran off towards the nearest citizen, who was being attacked by a villain. The citizen was a different type of robot, more round and friendly-looking. The enemies were sharper-looking and had screens on their faces, which was currently displaying “>:)”. Kottoba rushed over and tugged the attacker off, throwing it across the street. It was surprisingly light. She turned back to the citizen and helped it to its feet. 

    “You alright, man?” The friendly robot brushed itself off and gave Kiru a thumbs up before running off. She smiled. That wasn’t that hard. She ran to the next group of citizens and herded them away from the fight. Then there was one pinned under a bit of debris. Then a child-sized one stuck in their house. Then a couple, clinging to each other, being beaten by a whole gang of robots.

    She obliterated them all. 

    Feeling more and more confident with each moment, she turned around to check on Kanzou. 

    “Oh, brilliant.” 

    The narcissistic rat was challenging the boss. There was a random assortment of small fruits and vegetables floating around him. He was hurling sugar everywhere, occasionally spicing it up with a piece of produce, which didn’t seem to have a be super effective. The boss was attacking him so fast, it was a wonder Kanzou wasn’t shredded to bits by now.

    “Oi! Raisin-brain! What are you doing?!” Kiru yelled out. 

    Kanzou glanced over and at that moment the boss was able to land a hit. He dropped to the ground.

    “Frick-” Kiru rushed to him, prepared to help and possibly perform CPR, but Kanzou kicked her as soon as she was in range. 

    “Ow! Why?” 

    “Get down, you stupid friking idiot.”  he hissed. Kiru dropped immediately. 

    “Why the heck were you fighting that thing? You were supposed to get the little ones down first.”

    Kanzou rolled his eyes. “Did you forget the entire point of this thing? It’s a race, dummy. Obviously, the big bad is the obstacle. We've gotta defeat it and then find the exit." 

    “Okay, then, what do we do?” 

            He put a hand on his chin and furrowed his brow. "Obviously, it's a tough one, considering my skills were barely able to make a dent in it. We'll have to rely on trickery." 

            Kiru gave him an incredulous look. "Your skills? You mean throwing potatoes at a robot?"

            He gave her a harsh glare, cold as ice. "Well, you haven't done anything significant this whole time." 

             She sputtered. "I'm the only reason we even have points! You're the unhelpful one! All you've done is chuck fruit and I could do that without a quirk!" Kanzou opened his mouth to argue, but at that moment The Boss hurled a handful of small building chunks at them. One piece smacked Kiru in the head, and it hurt.

             To put it delicately, Kiru lost it.

            "Oh, rust off, you bucket of bolts!" She popped up from their shoddy hiding place, anger boosting her new-found energy. "You are the sorriest excuse for a villain dummy I've ever had the displeasure of meeting! You're not even doing anything, you stupid hunk of garbage! Your mother was a roomba and your father came from a scrapyard! What are you even made of, brainless steel?!" The Boss stopped suddenly, its facial screen glitching. Sparks flew from its joints, and it jerked violently. Kiru backed away. It was going crazy. The robot stopped convulsing, its facial screen briefly displaying an ":0" face.

              And then it exploded.

             "Gah!" Kiru scrambled out of the explosion's range. Flaming pieces of robot rained down, making it 100% more dangerous. A hand tapped her shoulder and she jumped. It was Kanzou, who was pointing to a door that had opened up on the other side of the fire. 

             "That has to be the exit!" He exclaimed. Kiru nodded in agreement. 

             "How do we get there?"

              In response, he flicked his hand and drew out a white powder from one of his pockets. "You need to follow me closely, otherwise you'll get burned." He took off, laying down thick layers of powder in front of him. Kiru bolted after him. The powder seemed to put out the fire almost instantly. After they had gotten through the worst of it, he spread his arms in a grand gesture, and a flurry of powder settled over the remaining flames. He turned back, satisfied. Kiru grinned.

              "Race you to the exit." Kanzou rolled his eyes, then dashed ahead of her. "Hey! I didn't say go yet!" She yelled, but she wasn't really mad. She ran after him, but he totally got there before her. "Rude."

             "Don't be offended,I'm just better than you." Kiru snorted. She pushed open the door, giving him a comical bow.

            "It's still ladies first." 

            "Excuse you, I'm a queen." He strode in and yelped. Kiru quickly followed him. 

            "What? What is-" she gaped.

            In front of them, there was a large screen, displaying their rankings among the other examinees. 

            "Second place?!" Whatever Kiru was expecting, it wasn't that. "Heck yeah, dude!" She raised her hand for a high five. Kanzou just scowled.

             "I could've done better if you hadn't slowed us down." He meant it to sound insulting, but Kiru thought he sounded more mad at himself. 

               Or maybe her brain was filtering it to sound that way as not to ruin her mood. Whatever.

              "Well, we're in the school now. Schools are for improving, right?" She grinned. "I'll just have to work hard to turn my stupid into strategy." Kanzou didn't respond, but he didn't scoff or roll his eyes, so Kiru took that as a sign he'd taken her stellar advice to heart.

                Ah, yes. Kottoba Kiru, dropper of hot wisdom, maker of puns, master of flirtation…

Ralph Meets the Disney Princes

“Hey, Vanellope!  Geez, where’d ya go, anyway?  Vanellope — oh, sorry, sorry.”

Ralph ducks beneath something or someone zooming past him, and then wheels his arms as he stumbles backwards around another crowd.  The Internet’s crazy huge and crazy busy.  Getting to Vanellope is such a pain — and after all the work he did getting them the money for that steering wheel, she can’t even be bothered to pick up a call?  Now he’s gotta go all the way to that Disney fansite and see what’s up.

“‘Scuse me, comin’ through.  Sorry, sorry, yea, I know, I don’t fit, I don’t ever fit anywhere, ‘scuse me.”

He tries at the very least to be polite about the way he’s pushing through the crowds of people running from one website to the next, but he’s not totally sure if he’s succeeding.  Well, whatever.  He’ll apologize later, if he sees any of them ever again, that is.

Oh, there we go, there’s one of those doorways to the fansite.  He’ll just pop in real quick, see what’s holding up Vanellope, and get the two of them back to eBay before the auction ends.  Easy peasy.

He forces his way through the little data port — the feeling of getting popped from one website to the next is still pretty disconcerting, and when he pops out on the other side, he trips.  

His arms wheel wildly and he feels his wrists hit something, which goes flying away from him, before he goes face first into a rather scratchy carpet.  The impact is followed by a soft shattering sound that probably means whatever he hit just broke.  Oops.

A little yelp and a chorus of intaken breaths sounds all around him, and he groans, sitting up and rubbing his forehead.  He doesn’t even have a chance to process where he’s ended up, though, before there’s — oh.  Oh that’s a sword in his face.

“Whoa!!” he says, automatically smacking it away.  “Watch where you’re pointing that!”

The owner of the sword, a tallish, handsomish man (though Ralph feels a little miffed to acknowledge the handsome part, because honestly, this guy is that kinda boring, generic handsome that’s always annoyed Ralph) with fair skin and brownish hair wearing a fancy white and gold shirt stares open mouthed at him for a minute, and then looks down at his hand where the sword was.  His and Ralph’s eyes both move over to where the sword is now, which is embedded in a wall three feet away.  Oops again.  Ralph forgot his strength again. He hopes he doesn’t have to pay for that, too.

“Fiend!!” cries another voice behind him.  “What foul realms do you hail from?”

“Whoa, no need for that kinda language,” Ralph says, getting himself back to his feet and turning around.

There’s actually a lot of guys in this room, all in varying degrees of generic handsomeness.  He kinda feels like he might’ve seen ‘em around somewhere before, but he can’t put his finger on it.  Three of them have got swords of their own, there’s a muskt and an arrow drawn to a bow pointed at him, someone’s holding a frying pan in the air, two guys are holding a loaf of bread and a ukulele like they are swords, a guy in a puffy winter coat has his fists raised, and one of them is just some kinda giant furry...monster thing, and he’s growling at Ralph.

“Whoa, hey,” Ralph says, throwing up his hands — and smacking into a small coffee table on the way up, accidentally overturning it on its side.  “Sorry, I think I might have taken a wrong turn.  This the way to the Disney fansite?”

“This,” says one of the more genericly handsome guys, a tallish guy with swooped brown hair who’s holding a shield along with his sword, “is a prince-only zone, I’ll have you know.”

A small chorus of agreement sounds from the other guys rises up, along with a small thunk as the darker haired handsome guy behind Ralph pulls his sword back out of the wall.

Ohhh, wait.  Ralph knows where he is now, and why these guys look familiar.  He left Vanellope with the Disney princesses so these guys...these guys must be the princes.  Yeah, he remembers them now, from when he was looking in at the site before Vanellope went in.

“Right, you aren’t allowed to be in here,” says a tall, blond, white guy in some kinda armor.  Right, that one’s John Smith.

“Hey, now,” Ralph says, suddenly irritated.  “That’s kinda rude, don’t you think?  How do you know I’m not a prince just by looking at me?”

A long, uncertain silence meets the question.  A few of the princes look at each other and shrug, the guy with the sword and shield’s face slackens with total surprise, and Aladdin, the guy wielding the loaf of bread, starts nodding, as though Ralph’s said something really smart.  Aladdin nudges Kristoff beside him, who nods back.

“He’s got a point,” says Eugene, the one with a frying pan.

“Maybe we should give him a chance?” says Eric, lowering his sword.

The princes look at Ralph, and then at each other.  The swords all go down, and for a moment, all their heads turn in, making a huddle.  Ralph rolls his eyes, folding his arms.  He almost taps his foot, but the first time he does he puts a dent in the floor, so he stops.

The princes all turn back to him.  Phillip, the guy with the sword and the shield, now stowed away at his belt and on his back, folds his arms and gives Ralph a sharp nod.

“We’ll have to ask you a few questions,” he says.  “We have to be sure, you understand.”

“Sure, whatever, I don’t really have time for this,” Ralph starts.  “Do you guys know where —”

One of the princes grabs his arm and leans in, startling him out of his sentence.

“Is there a girl you’re trying to find?” asks Prince Charming.

“Oh, hey, yeah, actually there is —”

The...other Prince Charming — do they have names?  Is Ferdinand the other one? —  swoops in front of him, holding a glass shoe dramatically over his head.

“Do you have only a single token of the single night you saw her with which to find her by?”

Ralph blinks, mouth hanging open for a second.  Then he remembers the medal in his pocket.  Hey, maybe these guys can help him find Vanellope.  They’ve gotta know where the princesses are at, right?

“Well, I’ve known her for a lot longer than that, but yeah, I’ve got this —”

Eric slides up in front of him so fast that Ralph almost drops the medal.

“Are you heroic?” he asks.

“What?  Well, I dunno, I mean, I don’t like to brag, but I did totally —”

Ralph almost falls backwards from the princes all crowding him now with enthusiasm, and he trips, smacking back into something furry.  He manages to lurch forward and turn to see what he hit, only to find the Beast hanging over him with a decidedly unreadable face.

“Do you have anger issues?” the Beast growls at him.

Ralph gapes for a second.

“Oh, wow, yeah, actually, but ya know, I’ve been working on them recently and —”

“Have you had a near death experience?” John Smith calls over the commotion.

“Oh, gosh, yeah —”

“What about being cursed to turn into some kind of animal?” Naveen shouts from behind the Beast.  The Beast let out a growl of agreement.

“What?  Why the heck would I —”

“Ever had a reindeer friend?” asked Kristoff.

“What the heck does that have to do with —”

“Have you ever commanded an army?” Shang asks with a nudge of his elbow.

“Uh, define army —”

“Taken down an evil megalomaniac?” Aladdin asks.

“Oh, wow, yeah, and it was the worst —”

A clatter of other questions that Ralph doesn’t even hear crash around him like a wave.  Are they even listening to his answers?  He feels like he’s giving a lot of answers that they want to hear, but clearly they aren’t picking up on them.

“I’ll tell you how we know you’re a prince!” Phillip shouts over the commotion, and for just a second, the wave of questions pauses, and all eyes turn towards him.  “Any prince worth his salt can complete this task!”

“Gosh, guys, I really don’t have time to do tasks — ” Ralph tries.

“It’s only a simple test of skill!  Any prince is more than capable!” Phillip says.

“Oh, here we go again,” Eugene says with a roll of his eyes.

“Beast!! Open the gates!!”

Ralph stumbles back out of the way, knocking into the overturned coffee table once again as the Beast lumbers past him with a grunt.  Ralph’s about to try again to tell them how he’s on a timetable here when the Beast yanks on a lever.

Ralph’s mouth drops open when the whole wall falls away.  Instead of just another room, there’s a ridiculously huge cavern on the other side.  When Phillip snaps his fingers, the dark cavern alights with flames lighting up the obstacle course.

Ralph can’t even process the whole thing.  There are rings of fire, springboards, swinging ropes, axes swinging back and forth, massive chasms, a metal dragon head spewing fire at random intervals, arrows shooting out of walls, and spiked floors shooting up and down.  At the very top of the multi-layered obstacle course, is some kind of straw dummy that might be supposed to be a princess, judging by the poorly sewn pink fabric slung around it and the blonde wig on the top.

“What the heck is that?” Ralph gapes.

“It’s a proper prince training course, of course,” Phillip says.  “Watch — I’ll show you!”

“Uh, wait — ” Ralph starts while Phillip crouches down to stretch each leg, and then gets back up, crackling his knuckles.  Then he leaps forward.  Ralph tries to follow it, he really does, but he can’t stop flinching and gasping and covering his eyes every time Phillip dives through a fiery ring or ducks underneath a volley of arrows.  Somehow, Phillip makes it to the top.  He doesn’t even look like he’s broken a sweat.  With a very princely sort of grin, he scoops the dummy princess under one arm, grabs a rope, and swings smoothly back to the start.  He smiles and bows to a smattering of applause, but it looks like most of the princes aren’t paying attention to him anymore.

“There,” Phillip says, only the faintest flush on his cheeks as he gently sets aside the princess dummy.  “Your turn.”

Ralph just gapes.  Ignoring the part where he doesn’t have time for this, there’s no way he’s gonna be able to do that.  Do they all really expect him to do that??  He looks over his shoulder at the rest of them.  

Shang nods approvingly, arms folded, and John is tapping his chin with a slow nod of his own.  The Prince Charmings both roll their eyes at each other, Ferdinand waving a hand as though they thought it was only a passable performance.  Naveen isn’t even paying attention anymore, humming to himself as he strums something on his ukelele while the Beast hunches over and listens.

“Well?  Aren’t you going to give it a go?” the Prince Charming who’s not Ferdinand says.  “If you want to prove you’re a prince and all.”

“Are you crazy??” Ralph said.  “What does this have to do with being a prince?  What does anything you guys just said have to do with being a prince?  Don’t you ever just, I dunno, relax?”

Everyone looks up at him.  A few of them look at each other.

Ralph jumps a little when someone claps him on the elbow, and he looks down to see Eugene grinning at him.

“Oh, I like you,” he said.  “Ignore the rest of them, really.  Especially Phillip.  He’s always like that.”

Eugene sends a pointed nod at Phillip, and Ralph looks over to see Phillip currently in the middle of posing dramatically with his sword and shield, flexing his arms while both Prince Charmings very obviously judge him.

“Anyway, besides, there’s really only one thing you gotta have to be a real prince,” Eugene says.

“Oh, geez, what now?” Ralph says.

Eugene just smiles and nudges him with his elbow.

“Well, a princess, obviously.  You got yourself one of those?”

“Oh!  Yeah, I do!!” Ralph breaks out into a grin.  “I’m looking for her right now!  Her name is Princess Vanellope and she’s my...she’s my best friend.”

He clutches the medal in his hand when he says this, suddenly wishing he hadn’t separated them for this adventure in the first place.  Eugene smiles.  He reaches up on tiptoe to pat Ralph on the shoulder.

“Well, there ya go.  You’re a prince.  What’s your name, anyway, kid?”

“Oh, right.  I’m Ralph.”

“Nice to meet you, Prince Ralph,” says Aladdin.  “Welcome to the squad!”

“Yeah!  Prince Ralph!  Prince Ralph!” Naveen shouts, punching the air a few times.

A whole chant overtakes the room, and almost all of the princes start chanting it along with Naveen.  Ralph blushes, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Oh, geez, guys, thanks,” he says.  “I’ve actually never been called a prince before.”

“Well, you’re always welcome here!” says Aladdin.

“Yeah, whenever you feel like joining the crazy crew,” Eugene says.  “Anyway, you said you were looking for someone, right?  Maui over there can show you the way to the princess side.”

“Oh, thanks, perfect!  Thanks, guys!”

“See ya, Prince Ralph!”

“Later!”

“So about that ‘relaxing’ thing....you need to do that, Phillip.”

“There is no time to relax when there are princesses to save and dragons to fight!”

“There aren’t any of those around here, dude.”

“Prince Ralph looked like he was ready to relax.  We should find some comfy clothes like his.”

“I’ll ask Genie if he’s got anything.”

Ralph chuckles as he leaves the chatter behind, making his way over to where Eugene pointed.

The guy laying on his side with his head on his hand while he pokes through a smart phone with the other is almost as big as Ralph is — actually, when he looks up and grins, Ralph feels surprisingly dwarfed.  Not a common feeling for him.  He’s not sure how he feels about it.

“Yo, newly minted Prince Ralph,” Maui says. “Looking for your friend?  She should still be through here on the princess side.”

Maui sits up on crossed legs and pulls back a curtain.  It looks perfectly dark inside, but it must be another data tunnel.  Ralph breathes a sigh of relief.  He still has plenty of time.

“Perfect, thank you!” Ralph says.

“You’re welcome,” Maui says with a wink.

But then Ralph hesitates just a second, one foot through the data tunnel as he looks back at Maui.

“Hey, just wondering...why weren’t you over there asking me all those weird questions too?”

Maui cocks an eyebrow at him and grins.

“Well, not to downplay your coronation or anything, Prince, but I’m not like the rest of ‘em,” Maui says.  “‘Prince’ is a little amateur when you’re already a demigod and all.”

“A what?”

“Better hop to it, princey, you’ve got yourself a princess waiting.  And don’t try singing, okay?  I deal with enough from the rest of them.”

And before Ralph can say anything word, Maui’s given him a rather solid tap with his big fish hook, and shoved Ralph forward.  With a yelp, Prince Ralph falls face first into the darkness, and zips off on his way to find Princess Vanellope.

Every Road Home: Chapter 2 Flash Gordon.

A Prime All Might x Reader Fic

A week had passed since you had picked up your DVD of the original Batman movie. You sit huddled again on your couch, watching Adam West fluster around in his underwear-clad superhero suit, a comically large, paper mâché bomb held high above his head. He dodges nuns, a baby carriage, a marching band Then turns tail towards the sea, a flock of (clearly not wooden) ducks bob below. He looks around, exasperated.

“Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb!” you say together with Mr. West. You smile.

You glance over to the lone DVD placed neatly on your shelf. Flash Gordon. You had reasoned that when you had first left the second-hand DVD shop that you had accidentally grabbed his DVD instead of your own. He must have totally forgotten to trade it with you when he brought you yours.

Several times you thought about bringing his DVD back to him, but you hadn’t seen him since. You had tucked yourself away, back to the comfort and safety of your apartment as if nothing had happened.

But still, the gentle yet strong laughter of his flitted through your thoughts. Maybe if you went back to the DVD store and left it there for him…no…you couldn’t bear seeing that cashier again. What if you waited on the spot where you had met—ridiculous as if he’d come back to that spot for no reason. You snort at your own train of thought, maybe a “Lost and Found” poster reading, “Found. One of the most gaudy, over-acted movies ever made (otherwise known as Flash Gordon), seeking ridiculously tall blonde to pick it up.”

Your phone buzzes.

You pick up the glowing screen and see it’s a text from your younger sister, Louise.

Not long ago, your sister had gone to New York, working there as a design artist for a new small-scale company that was making suits for heroes. Pride blossomed in your chest at the memory, she was incredibly talented and was definitely going places in life. You unlock your phone and read the message:

L: Hey you. What are you up to? 😊

You type back.

Saving the world, as usual. Just kidding. Still here. What about you?

In the blink of an eye she responds.

L: We have a new client! She’s so cool, her quirk gives her cat-like abilities and features, so I gotta work around those, designing this one will be SOOO much fun!!!! :0

Another few seconds.

L: …you know, I miss you a lot. I worry about you too. ☹

You bite your lip.

L: I know you’ve been going through a lot, the anxiety, depression, and stuff but…you need to get out of there. Go places. Meet people.

You type back.

Yeah. I wish I could. But I can’t.

Tears well up in your eyes. You feel so pitiful the way you are now. You put your phone down, ready to fall back into another pit of depression when it buzzes again.

L: I’ve got it! Why don’t you come and live with me here in New York?!

Your eyes widen.

What?! Really?!

L: No ur too much of a nerd LOL. Yeah of course you dummy! Just think of it!! The two of us, sharing a flat, taking on the big apple. We party! We geek out! Maybe you get out to the streets and meet a handsome stranger? ;)

You roll your eyes but a smile paints your face. Your heart thrums with excitement, But…

Then the usual feeling of intense dread takes over. New York is a massive city. With lots of noise and smell and worst of all…People. Even with your sister at your side you would be terrified, and you knew that all too well. Too many eyes watching you, too many heartbeats in one place.

Too many unsaid thoughts for you to accidentally pick up.

You shiver, the corners of your mind returning to that sickeningly familiar static. You try to breathe. Your thumb hovers over the keypad of your phone.

I can’t do it, it’s too much. It’s not like can afford it anyway.

You put down your phone. The screen glows again but you don’t read your sister’s reply. You curl yourself up into a ball on your couch. Coward. Stupid. Worthless. Pathetic. You feel your insides get tense, you clench your teeth. You taste salt on your lips as your eyes drip. You lay there and let yourself cry in silence for a long time.

You take a deep breath and wipe your damp face with your shirt.

You need…something.

You will yourself hard enough that you stand up. You grab a clean pair of socks, your shoes, your purse. You head towards your front door when you stop. You turn to look at the shelf and the lonely DVD sitting there. The memory of reassuring laughter fills your mind. You shove the DVD in your purse and walk outside.

The day is sweltering, once again but you know you have to be outside to tame your feelings. You don’t know where you are going so you wander around, past the neighborhood park with its scalding metal slide and rusty swings. All empty. You stop at the drinking fountain for a sip of room temperature water before wiping your face with your sleeve and moving on. You walk through a small cul-de-sac. The lawns vacant of all life except for a lawn gnome or two. A dog barks. Flies buzz around the trashcans set out for pick up. You walk. You’re already parched again. Your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth. A cold soda sounds pretty good. There’s a gas station across the road.

You look both ways and step off to cross the street when everything seems to move both faster than the eye and slow motion at once.

The screeching of tires. The stench of burned rubber. The crunching of a bumper plate.

You cover your head with your hands, unable to put together a final thought when…

It stops.

You look up, confused when you see a long blue cape flutter around you. An impossibly tall man—no—hero stands between you and the vehicle that had nearly made you roadkill. His hands made massive dents in the front of the red convertible…he had stopped it with his bare hands and stood like it was nothing at all. He glances down at you with a familiar smile.

“Are you quite alright?”

You nod wordlessly.

He drops the car with a heavy clang, the two occupants shrieking in surprise.

“I think you’ve had quite enough of the joyride, you two. First my best friend’s car and now you nearly crushed this young lady. Turn yourselves in peacefully and no one will get hurt.”

The woman at the wheel has rat-like features, long teeth and whiskers, only made less attractive as she spits at the pavement before grabbing the man next to her, hopping out of the car and running for it.

The hero turns to pursue the two of them when the man lifted what looked like a remote detonator with his hand. The hero skids to a stop, instantly putting together the situation before leaping back towards you.

“GET DOWN.”

No sooner had he reached you then the car exploded, rattling the earth beneath your feet and shocking your eardrums. You carefully opened your eyes, finding that the hero had grasped you and tumbled you both over to the sidewalk. He has you cradled in his muscular arms, you feel his chest rise and fall once. He carefully unwraps you from his cape before dusting the debris from his shoulders and his V shaped bangs.

“Today isn’t turning out how you planned, I can imagine.” He says with a laugh.

Everything clicks.

He’s the same man you ran into that day at the DVD store.

You swallow hard and reach for your purse “I, uh—”

“Sorry, miss, but those two criminals are not far and I have to put a stop to this madness. We can talk later.” He turns and looks around, searching the area.

Your mouth opens and shuts like a fish.

The only building nearby is the gas station. He rushes in and you hear a loud clattering and a woman’s shout. You can’t help but get closer. You peer inside and see the fluorescent lights flicker. The hero stands silent. Listening. The floor erupts beneath him and he flips out of the way. Out from the earth comes the rat-faced woman, she had used her claws to dig underground. She swipes at his face, he dodges, yet his cheek gets sliced in the process. He sweeps his leg under her, knocking her off balance and she falls. He takes the opportunity and pounces on top of her, pinning her arms behind her back. In the flickering lights you see him pull out a pair of handcuffs.

The two of them walk out the still working sliding door of the gas station. The woman grimaces at you, her lip swollen and split from her fall.

The hero stares her down, an intensity to his ever-present smile. “I will find your accomplice, Ms. Johnson, either now or later. Tell me where he is and it’ll be better for the both of you.”

Suddenly static crackled in your head once again, causing your head to throb. You looked around. It was neither the woman nor the hero.

A piece of cloth came down from an air vent behind the two of them.

“—Bastard”

“BEHIND YOU!” you shout.

He hero spun around in a split second, his hand grasping the cloth in his hand as it wriggles with a life of its own. He tugs and the air vent brakes with a sharp twang, a pile of what looked like bandages fell to the ground.

“There you are, Mr. Threadborne.” The hero says as he pulls him closer with a jerk.

The pile of bandages comes to life and wraps itself together in the shape of a man. He snarls at the hero before offering his hands in defeat. The hero puts him in another pair of cuffs, one, you noticed, has a different design than the woman’s.

“Gauze Threadborne and Prairie Johnson, how lucky can a guy be to catch both you villains at once?” he laughs heartily.

He glances down at you, looking like he has something to say when you both hear sirens approaching. A pair of police cars swerve into the gas station. Four officers walk out and greet the hero before he explains the situation.

“These two were driving down this street, speeding in a stolen car, as usual when they nearly ran into this young lady. Luckily, I arrived on time to stop them. They unfortunately made a brief escape, taking advantage of a remote detonator that was held next to the engine of the stolen car. I tailed them to this gas station, the man employed here escaped without issue. We fought, and, thanks to this young lady, I was able to apprehend them both.”

The manner in which he says all this sounds much more professional than how he had spoken to you before.

The ratty woman, Prairie, screeches, cutting through their conversation. “I ain’t gettin’ inside that clunker, ‘specially not without my baby cakes in there with me!”

“Oh, sweetie pie don’t you fret,” coos the bandage man, Gauze. “We gon’ be together soon enough, don’t you worry your pretty little head.” He turns to the hero “…an’ when we get on the streets again, I’m gunna show this prick that was no way to treat my girl.” He hisses, his hollow eyes staring daggers.

The hero, meanwhile, looks totally oblivious to his threat. He smiles pleasantly at the police officer as he shakes his hand.

“Thanks for your help, All Might.” The officer says, adjusting his cap before climbing into his car. The officers take the criminals and speed off just as fast as they came.

The hero, apparently named All Might, peers down at you with a question in his bright blue eyes. You clear your throat once more.

“I-I um, think this is yours.” You hand him his copy of Flash Gordon.

This was going to be longer but, I think this is an ok length. Don’t wanna overdo it!

Threads~~~

Do you believe in fate, destiny, serendipitous meetings, butterfly feelings, zing, spark or whatever they call it? You know I never believed in any of them.

Ever since I was a kid, my Mom and Dad have told me. When I am old enough, to take my time when it comes to dating because when the right one comes, you'll know, you'll feel it. Not to rush things. They've fed me all that crap ever since.

I believed on threads of fate though. You know the red threads that gets depicted on movies that connects two people no matter how far they are from around the world. Yes those threads..

Okay now, this might not seem interesting but it is, once you keep on reading dummy(wink).

I think were born with the threads or we get it the same time our better half is born as well. Neither one of us knows how it works, nor how one can see those threads and who they are destined to be with for the rest of their lives, no one knows.

There might be a chance that you've already crossed paths with them but neither one of you knew that you guys were meant for each other. Because that's how it was meant to be, divine beings and gods made it that way so who are we to complain right?

Destiny. What is it with this word? A lot of people get giddy when they hear this from couples who said they were meant or destined for each other.

Stop and think for a second because, destiny is associated with alot of things aside from love, like death for an instance. Yep, death. Morbid as it sounds, if it is your destiny to die right at this very moment, you'll die because it is already written.

That same goes with love actually, if you guys were destined to be with each other? It doesn't matter if you have broken up or have been separated for months or years. There will come a time when destiny will work it's magic and connect the two of you over and over again.

If you don't give up easily like me, then why not grab that opportunity, make a path, build a bridge, swim, heck fly a thousand miles if you have to just to connect with the one you love. Remember that if you can cheat death, then you can probably cheat your destiny too.

Serendipity. It all goes within the choices that you have made or about to make. You might have already found the one but then in a twist of fate, they suddenly give up on you or they never felt the connection between the two of you in the first place.

If you feel that you just had a serendipitous moment then go for it, because the last thing that you'd want is to lose your someone in a sea full of fishes then lose them forever, and end up with the wrong one.

Spark. This is actually one of the most common things that we have all experienced. That spark that we feel whenever a person that we just met literally rocked our world in an instant.

It's unfathomable, awkward, gives you anxiety even if you don't have one. Makes you sweat like a guy who's been in the gym for a couple of hours, that kind of feeling.

I got to tell you, this is where we make our first mistake. The assuming stage. Okay so you see her/him, but then you and only you were thinking that there was a spark right when your eyes met, that's totally one sided. Stupid.

Whatever you feel, that could be something else like infatuation. Not unless if the eye contact goes on and off for hours. Then and only then that you can assure yourself that you've found someone who fancies you.

Love is unpredictable, it's lethal in an emotional kind of way when you get the wrong side of the coin.

It doesn't matter. Plan or no plan, we are just humans and it's only natural for us not to follow the plan that has been set for us sometimes. It's what you call the will to make your own choice or freedom to decide. I'm talking about you guys, yep you who can't make up their minds when it comes to you know, making up their minds.

Stupidity. This is the worst stage that I have ever come acrossed. You do stupid shit when they are around, you get clumsy right? You're not yourself and you don't even know what you're doing around them. You make a fool out of yourself subconsciously and yeah I'm actually kinda guilty of that.

You know they always said that, you should use your head instead of your heart. That's total crap. Believe me when I say this, your head doesn't have a say when your heart has already settled on something or someone. No say at all. We literally become stupid on another level.

Butterfly. I totally love this. This is when you get nervous on your first date, or if your getting ready to fess up then have to wait for the answer. Or did something wrong and your just waiting what'll happen next. I fucking love it.

Adrenaline junkies probably have this alot before they do something stupid. The sad part is, it does go away after some time and it won't feel the same way as the first next time that it happens.

Memories. We all build this from ground up. Strong relationships have bad and good memories because couples that have stayed together probably grew up together collecting both and have made a foundation out it.

This is one of the reasons why it's hard to break up as well because of the memories or now you might call it the history between the two of you. I've had a seven year relationship and I gotta tell you, breaking up with someone you've been with for that long is hard and it leaves a big dent on who you are.

Okay this is about my seven year ex girlfriend. We've had arguments before but being in a long distance relationship for a couple of years has taken it's toll on us.

Small arguments escalated to hours of unnerving, senseless, heated discussions. Small things became subjects for arguments and that went on every night for almost two years.

One day when things got pretty ugly between us, I asked God to give me a sign because I knew we're both hurting and we can't go on any longer. The day after that? I got a sign from him and went on with his plan.

It was one of the saddest day of my life for I had to let go of someone I've loved for a long time, but that's how the game goes ya' know? You win some, you lose some. It's a fucking circus if you ask me, and if you don't know how to play it? You'll lose a lot.

Lust. Have you ever thought or asked yourself, if what you're feeling is love or just lust? There's a fine line between the two. You might feel lust for now, but after some time it might develop into love.

A lot of relationships start with lust. One night stands may be as well the most unethical foundation of relationships today if you ask me.

I remember a friend who told me that it doesn't matter if a guy is good, have class, respectful. Because at the end of the day, the first thing that you'll notice about a person is their face, then you'll just have to find out what or who they really are afterwards.

That's how you get into those infamous one night stands, smh..

Tango. You can learn to love someone and that's the basic principle of it.

Don't like someone who likes you? Ask yourself again, why? Why not give them a chance, you'll never find out if you're gon be happy with them or not if you don't even try. If you're just gonna go with your preferences everytime someone gives their heart and asks for yours, then chances are you've already shoved away 70% of your candidates. The remaining 30%? Either they're gon love you or break you. Do the math dude.

Take a chance, risk it all, because if all else fails and it doesn't work out? Then stop. Don't be afraid to try, because the saddest part of not trying is regretting it at the end. If you tried, then you can tell yourself, I atleast danced together with them.

Denial. Is an ugly thing. I just quoted Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura. This is probably were all of us have our hopes up or down. Not everyone have the courage to confess their feelings, and it takes a lot of guts to do it.

If someone that likes you confessed their feelings for you, then tell them what you're feeling right away. Otherwise that poor soul might assume that you're on the same page.

So if you feel the same way? Then tell them the truth damn it, don't deny your feelings, they've told you the truth and it's common courtesy to do the same.

Forever. This one. How should I say it. It's almost not possible anymore, because nowadays it is all about who gets the hot one or the rich and the famous one kind of game. The only time you'll be together forever is if you have a stable life, career and especially stable income and that is the stereotypical norm of our dating society nowadays.

If you were born before Y2K you'll probably be confused on how courting and dating works today. It's a one way street, and if your not careful, you could end up the wrong way or worse, in a ditch. If the word forever couldn't keep up with today's generation then how can you?

The point I'm making is, you don't have to believe in any of them. Well for your fantasyland atleast, but in reality? You need to work hard to get what you want and what you need.

Before coming to CA, I knew that it would mean that I'm gon be living a new life, meet new people, experience different culture, etc. That's exactly what happened, and in an unexpected side story, I found the one. I could've told her that the Lord told me to fly a thousand miles to meet you. It wasn't that simple.

Everything was going well, thought we were on the same page because of what she has been showing me but when I confessed my feelings for her, she backed off. So I just thought to myself, she's probably not the one. Just to numb down the disappointment and hurting that I was feeling.

I would've given her all of me. My heart, my lifetime, my soul... All of it, but she choose to hurt me(Hi Popoy!).

Well who knows, maybe she's still out there, I don't know how much longer do I need to wait but as for now, I'm meeting other people to widen my circle, and she could be inside that circle this time.

We might be able to break our thread and create a new one with the one that we have right now. It doesn't make sense but when you feel that the person you're in love with makes you feel all those that I've mentioned above? Then keep them, never let your desire for destiny hinder you this time, it's as simple as that.

Follow your heart, don't give in to your preferences or your fantasies and be open. Believe me, you'll be happier when you do.

I have been an actress for about ten years now. My hard work definitely precedes me. Being successful never hits you until the recognition from others gets you more and more noticed. Once I had my tenth anniversary fan meeting, the realization of how long I’ve been acting really got to me one way or another.

I started acting when I was sixteen and now being the ripe old age of twenty-six, the work never stops. Currently, I’m working on a drama as the lead. There’s flashbacks in the drama so I have to wear a school uniform which makes me feel like I’m too old to be wearing one.

During touch-ups, my phone rings. A smile slowly comes across my face when I read the name on the screen.

“How can I help you, Kibummie?”

He chuckles through the phone, “From the sound of your voice, it sounds like you’re having fun. Are you filming today?”

“Yeah, they got me in a school uniform. A good way to make me feel older than I actually am.”

“Yah, we’re the same age. Are you calling me old too?”

“I mean if the shoe fits.” We both laugh.

Kibum, or as the world knows him as Key, and I have been friends ever since we were trainees. We also debuted in the same year. Our personalities match which is how we’ve been able to keep in touch even after he became extremely popular with his group, SHINee.

“Alright, ajumma. Do you have time later to get some food?”

I look at the time to see that it’s already past noon, “We still have a few scenes to film until later on.”

“That’s perfect since we have some interviews to do until then. So we can have dinner?”

I nod, “Yeah, that sounds good. I’ll see you then.”

Normally times like this where we hang out by the end of the day leads to something else. That being something we’ve been doing for nearly a year.

Kibum and I have always been there for each other, especially during the ups and downs of dating. Either we’ve been cheated on, dumped, or the relationship just didn’t work. We always found ourselves comforting each other. Until one night, we had gotten a little too drunk and we ended up sleeping together. At first, we felt regretful about it and decided to act like nothing happened, which we did, and it felt nice to not have to worry about anything afterwards. That’s when we came up with the idea of having a friends with benefits type of relationship.

As of late, my feelings have been failing me.

I meet up with Kibum at our favorite bbq restaurant. I wait as he starts cooking the meat professionally like he always does.

“How’s filming going?” He asks.

“It’s going well. All we can hope for is good ratings afterall.”

He scoffs, “You’re saying that like it’s difficult. Nearly every drama you’ve been in has had high ratings, you know why?”

I smile waiting for him to give me a compliment, “Why?”

“You always scare the leading guy so he’s pressured enough to always picking up the slack.” I slouch, I should’ve known he wasn’t going to give me some sort of praise. “Don’t think it’s because of your acting skills.”

I fake laugh, “Of course not, that’s why I’ve won multiple acting awards which reminds me when are you gonna get one?”

He gives me a side glance, “I’m not the one dressed up as a high school student in my mid twenties.”

“Didn't you dress like a student once?”

He nods, “Yeah but I was handsome in that uniform. I can't say the same for you.”

After a few more savage banters between us, we finally quiet down by eating. There was also talk about work and his upcoming comeback with SHINee. I managed to keep the conversation away from his variety show filming with BoA. I like her but sometimes I feel like second best compared to her.

The meet from the grill is nearly gone so I reach over to grab a piece of meat from the far side. I end up burning my wrist against the edge of the grill. I pull it back to swallow the pain of the burn. I blow the hot spot even though I know it wouldn’t help.

“Are you okay?” Kibum asks watching me deal with the pain.

I nod “Yeah, I’m fine. That’s what I get for being greedy.”

“Here,” he grabs my hand to reveal the burn mark, “Tomatoes help reduce the heat.” He takes half of a tomato to rub around the tender spot.

As I watch him, I begin to feel butterflies in my stomach. It wasn’t the first time too. I found myself paying more attention to the little things that Kibum does that I never realized had any effect on me. In some ways, I’d hope that he would just scold me like he usually would and say ‘How can you be so greedy for the brisket to burn yourself, dummy.’

Instead, I was gawking at Kibum and seeing him in a whole different light. I saw him as not only my friend but someone that I wanted to have an intimate relationship with instead of a sexual one. If I wanted to keep the friendship I have with him, I’ll have to stop the benefits before my feelings eat away at me.

After we finished eating, Key and I go back to his apartment. We usually finish up the night with some beer and soju which usually leads to other things. We end up sitting on the couch drinking and talking about whatever comes to mind.

In my sudden hard thinking, I feel Kibum’s hand putting pressure on my shoulder, “What are you thinking about that’s got you extremely tensed in the shoulders?” He asks.

I shake my head, “Just work. It’s nothing.”

He begins to trail his lips across my shoulder blades until he leans in close enough that his chest is touching my arm. His breath starts to tickle my ear causing the familiar sensation between my legs to radiate like usual.

I honestly don’t want to have another night with him like this but the selfish side of me can’t help it.

Looking up at him, our lips meet. His body leans into mine, pushing me down onto the couch. I part my legs wide enough to let his waist come closer. I let out a moan when I feel his erection press into me, causing friction to my core.

Kibum pulls away but his lips continue to move from jaw down to my neck, “Don’t think about anything. Just keep your eyes on me.” He whispers.

Looking into his eyes, unable to say anything, I nod.

I’ve decided that this would be the last time we’d do this. It would hurt me too much to pretend like nothing was going on with me. Over time, it would get to the point where I wouldn’t be able to let go of Kibum and I wouldn’t be able to have him as a friend.

The following morning, Kibum and I had fallen asleep on the couch. I woke up to the sight of his sleeping face and his arms wrapped around me. It took a lot of willpower to get up out of his grasp. I wanted so desperately to stay like that for as long as possible, but it was only making things worse for me.

I started getting dressed when I hear Kibum move around on the couch. I take a breath to think about what I was going to say.

“It’s still early. You should stay for breakfast.” He says before getting up to put his boxers on.

I finish getting dressed when I just say what I have to before it gets even more complicated, “Let’s stop doing this.”

He chuckles, “What? Having breakfast together?”

I turn to look at him, “No, let’s stop having sex with each other.”

There’s an awkward silence until he finally says something, “Why all of a sudden?”

“I don’t know about you but I’m getting bored with all this. We’ve been doing this no strings attached thing for a year now. Maybe it’s time for us to get back into the real world of dating again.”

“Is what we have not working for you anymore?” He asks with a serious tone.

I shake my head, “I love you, Kibum but we already know that nothing more will come from us doing this for much longer. That was our arrangement, friends with benefits. I’d like to keep the friendship.”

Kibum sighs then shrugs his shoulders, “Fine, consider the benefits gone.”

It hurt to hear him say it so matter-of-fact. Deep down I wanted him to fight for me but instead, he did what I’d expect him to do. I can’t hate him for it since this was what was going to happen eventually. It’s time to get back to reality. A hard pill to swallow.

As the days went by, Kibum and I had gone back to our usual routine before the arrangement. We were talking like nothing had changed. I subconsciously began to avoid him in hopes that he wouldn’t bring up the topic or I’d give in if he wanted to do something more again. I felt terrible since I ended it so it wouldn’t affect our friendship but I was putting a dent in it myself.

I was able to keep my mind occupied with work. We were filming the intense scenes today so it helped me get some of my inner turmoil out and it also made for good content.

The director had called for us to take a break. I head towards the food truck that Kibum had sent me when I noticed that one figure standing near it that wasn’t his picture.

I put on a smile as I approached him, “Kibummie, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be doing promotions today?”

“I finished them early. I thought I’d come and see how work was going.”

I nod, “It’s going pretty well. We just got done shooting the emotional scenes today.” He hands me a cup of coffee that was from the food truck, “Thanks for the truck. I’m not sure how many more photos of yourself you could’ve put on it though.”

He chuckles but his laugh seems different than usual, “I know that you don’t get tired of seeing my face so I figured it was necessary.”

The more I stare at him the more I begin to sense something is up. Taking the initiative I ask, “What’s wrong? You seem different than usual.”

He sighs, “I wanna know the real reason.”

I gasp wishing that he had actually gotten over it, “I already told you.

He scoffs, “I tried to accept your reasoning but I don’t feel like it’s true.”

I start to panic, wondering if I should tell him the truth or not. Instead, I continue to lie, “We can’t keep doing this for the rest of our lives. It’s better if you move on from the idea now. We tried it and it worked for the time that we needed to recover from our past relationship failures.”

“I don’t wanna just move on.”

I should’ve known doing this for as long as we did would cause this kind of drama. I really wanted to preserve the friendship that Kibum and I had but it seems like things won’t be going back to the way it was.

“Don’t you get it? Eventually we’ll need love and affection, the kind friends can’t give to each other.”

He stares at me for the longest time before taking a step towards me, “What if I told you that the only love and affection that I want is from you.”

My heart races as I comprehend his sudden confession, “What?”

Kibum takes my hand in his and squeezes it, “For some time I’ve been having these feelings. I couldn’t describe them but when you told me that you wanted to stop our deal, my heart broke. As time went by, I started to feel like I was missing something. I had missed feeling your touch. That’s when I realized that what I was feeling towards you wasn’t the type you’d have for a friend.”

“It’s became more than you could handle.” I say knowing exactly how he felt since it had been what I was going through recently. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

He smiles, “I was scared that it would ruin our relationship if you didn’t feel the same way.”

Every bit of emotion hits me. Kibum was feeling the same romantic confusion as I was. All this time I was scared of losing him but in fact we were only growing closer as our intimate time together went on.

“For how long?” I ask.

“Since the first time. I felt guilty for feeling that way since I figured you wouldn’t have wanted a relationship.”

“I thought you wouldn’t have wanted it. That’s why I ended it.”

Kibum laughs, “Maybe we are meant for each other since we’re both so dense.”

“So where do we go from here?” I ask wondering if this was really happening between us.

He smiles before interlocking his hand with mine, “What are you doing after work? Would you like to go on a date?”

Chapter 3 Part A: First Impressions | Black Heart’s POV

A week passed since what had transpired that one night, which was a lot to take in for Black Heart and the fact he had gone through Dr. Cerupote’s procedure had made him dazed a good while. That period of time was all it took for the young kahunore to heal from it gradually. While the side effects on the first, second and third days had him staggering a lot, which would make him in no state to walk at all, he spent those days just laying down in the bunk room he shared with Rat Tooth. Speaking of said person, his bunk mate checks on him every now and then making sure he is resting during that time. Gods forbid that Black Heart decides to wander about when he should be laying down which would have irritated Rat-Tooth into worrying more than he lets on.

By the fourth day he managed to be able to walk without staggering, but he spent most of his time stuck by Rat-Tooth’s side to the supposed dismay of the older kahunore but relented regardless. Black Heart felt being stuck between awake and dreaming yet it never felt like he slept anyway, he has in a way barely remembered what sleep feels like in years since being forced to wear the mask. On the seventh day, Black Heart had fully recovered and now able to function physically and mentally, meaning he can go about his day and did not need to stick to the one person that tolerates him enough in the Brotherhood.

However, because of what had happened that night Rat-Tooth had promised to help Black Heart on using his Aninergio abilities better. It was around the late morning that the older kahunore took Black Heart to what was once a tall building reduced to rubble and spread out cinderblocks. They both cleared an area into a makeshift training ground and using the cinderblocks to be piled up high enough to be a person, a dummy target of sorts which they set up several versions of. Then both kahunores went a distance from one of the cinderblock targets.

“Alright kid this is how I usually hit targets with my skills, you may take reference on how I do it.” Rat-Tooth said as he faced the cinderblock target, but looked back at his temporary student.

Black Heart watched the older kahunore posed in a defensive like pose where he crossed his arms in front of his face. With his eyes closed he clenched his fists, breathed in hard. In doing that action tendril’s green in color sprouted out there were four in all. He opened his eyes and with both open palms he punched directly at the direction at the target. With that action, the tendrils from his back burst out of his back and shot towards the target fast crackling and hitting it. It was somewhat effective but it did not budge the target at all much other than knocking off one block.  Rat-Tooth looked back at Black Heart and pointed at his handiwork

“Now you try it, remember this requires your focus.” Rat-Tooth said. “Don’t daze off!”

Rat-Tooth moved out of his position to make way for Black Heart to make his stance. Just like his disgruntled mentor, Black Heart faced the target he did everything his older peer did, he felt his energy pulsing and felt the tendrils come out. Opening his eye he stared point blank at the target. Just when he is about to take aim, a lingering thought got on his mind the memories he had tried to see through in his mindscape a week ago. Despite the distracted thought, he did exactly what Rat-Tooth did punch at the direction and release the blasts of energy. The blasts were bigger than Rat-Tooth’s but as powerful looking as they are they did not even hit the pile of cinderblocks, in fact it went to hit a thick dilapidated wall near the targets which ended up making a big dent.

Rat-Tooth shook his head in disappointment. “You pack quite da punch! Your aim however is not so great. Did you daze off like I told you not to?”

Black Heart did not reply, but Rat Tooth did not wait for him to answer.

“I thought so.”

“I’m trying, just somethings on my mind.” Black Heart said through his hands

“We can talk about what’s on your mind and all these feelings crap later! It’s training time not going off to la la land time! Ya think you could try again?”

Black Heart felt doubtful, but he signed. “I could try.”

“Just do it! And whatever is going on your head right now keep it blank just hit the damn target!”

Again, Black Heart took the position, and charged his powers to once again take a hit at the target. It hit the same wall this time the dent being a big hole now.

Rat-Tooth rubbed his temples in frustration. “You cause even more damage but at the wrong target. Again!”

“I’m doing the best I can!” Black Heart said this time with his hoarse voice in exasperation didn’t care at that moment if his throat closed up from talking which caused him to cough.

“Take it easy there, BH. You know what happens when you get riled up when you talk.” Rat-Tooth said.

Recovering from the cough he signed with annoyance. “Easy for you to say!”

“Do you want to properly do this or not? We can argue all day and waste my time while we are at it!”

He glared at his bunkmate for a moment and turned his gaze back to the target and took the offensive position once again. Just when he is about to charge Rat-Tooth intercepted his line of thought. “If you insist on getting preoccupied with your thoughts while aiming, pretend that target is the mad doctor himself. After all he is the reason you were loopy this whole week!”

On the mention of Dr. Cerupote he had a feeling of dread, he hated having to go to that strange man for his monthly appointments only to be poked and prodded and having his memories scanned through. It was the only time his mask came off, and he knew the ramifications of having it removed even temporarily. The idea of the Doctor having to violate him like that every month made him shake with rage. This rising anger would have blinded him but it gave him a clarity he never thought he had because with that thought in mind the pile of cinderblocks he imagined to be the doctor. With the target in front of him he blasted the cinderblocks to the dust, not only at the target but it went through the wall making another hole on it.

“That’s what I am looking for!”  Rat-Tooth whooped impressed at the damage.

Black Heart stared at the damage he has done, he found himself panting whatever he did with his powers it drained him which felt quite odd. Rat-Tooth noticed how tired the younger kahunore is when he bent over to his knees to catch his breath.

“It looks like you are a bit drained. You wanna rest for a bit BH? I could really go for a cold one right now.” Rat Tooth said.

The younger kahunore just nodded following Rat-Tooth to sit by a pile of huge slabs of rubble. Sitting himself down he got a chance to sit down after being up since the early hours of the morning instead of lying down in bed to wait for daylight. Now that he had time to sit down, Black Heart is left with his thoughts and his eyes fell to the yellow crystal necklace around his neck.

He touched at it again feeling its strange warmth again. Looking at it he observed its appearance, he remembered it used to have such a lustre but now it is in its own way dull yet it still had a spark of its shine it used to have back then. He noticed how scratched up it was with a section in the middle of it that resembles an indent that could fit his pinkie finger if he touched that area. He began tracing the lines of the small cracks with his fingers from his prosthetic hand gently.

He would have done the tracing a little longer if it were not for the “pssssch” sound of a beer bottle being opened. It was Rat-Tooth who opened said bottle, Black Heart did not need to ask to know where it came from, this pile of ruins is one of the older kahunore’s secret cache of alcohol.

“I’d offer you one, but that tin can of a mask prevents you from you even consuming stuff.” The older kahunore said a wry smile on his face as he took a sip from his drink.

Black Heart just signed. “Don’t think I’d enjoy it much to be honest.”

“How’d you know if you never tried it in the first place?”

“Well I’ve been told many times by the boss that I make a fool of myself and I’m perpetually sober. I don’t think he needs another drunken idiot who is already incompetent even when sober to irritate him more.”

Rat-Tooth just rolled his eyes. “Fair enough.” He grumbled taking swig at his drink, he looked back at Black Heart once again tracing the lines of his necklace. Clearing his throat Rat-Tooth said. “So… Do you remember what happens when the good doctor is poking and prodding you?”

Black Heart stopped fiddling with the necklace, he sighed and with his hands, he replied, “I mostly remember the procedure where he has to prep me up just to have my brain poked and prodded while I lay unconscious; and waking up. But between those moments of blacking out and waking up I barely remember being in my mindscape for a bit here and there. I do somehow manage to change what the Doctor wants to see.”

“Ah yes the ‘memory forest’ as you called it.” Rat Tooth said putting his drink down next to him. “Don’t you have something similar?”

“Well no, mine are just for some reason are just rows of rocks with a coin under them each, I mean its been a while since I visited mine.”    

“Well I can tell you its an unpleasant experience to be put in a vulnerable position awake and blacked out.”

“I can see why with the way the doc mind screws had done with you. I’m surprised you managed to stay sane. What do you remember most about being there?”

“Just the desire to touch those trees, using my will to temporarily change memories around. But my conscious is clear knowing he didn’t see what really happened last week. I still have very mixed feelings about it.”

Rat-Tooth picked up his drink again to take a full swig. “Right, that day where I have to cover for you. I almost forgot you were having an appointment, I know you don’t forget yours considering you never missed one regardless, the doc sure has a way with finding you. I only remembered last minute when I realized you didn’t come to the bunkroom in time.”

Both kahunores stayed quite to let themselves be in each other’s company just staring at the carnage due to Black Heart’s handiwork. Once again Black Heart, felt compelled to looked at his necklace and fidget with it.

“Rat-Tooth.” Black Heart said using his voice this time.

“Yeah?” the older kahunore said a little miffed from not drinking the whole bottle before getting interrupted. “What’s on your mind?”

“Do you ever still wish to escape?” Black Heart asked signing in a careful manner.

The older kahunore stayed silent deep in thought as if deciding what to say. He guzzled the last of his beer and threw it against the floor which shattered, making the younger kahunore flinch. Rat-Tooth looked away looking down at the floor avoiding Black Heart’s gaze. Opening his mouth to speak he said. “The me five years ago did.” He said in a voice too calm for the disgruntled kahunore as he turned his gaze back at Black Heart.

“What changed your mind?”

“Shade kept our hopes up. He meant every word he said, but then he had to get himself killed and it was then I realized what a foolish plan this was all along.”

“You can’t really think that.”

“Maybe. But call me stubborn, I ran away from home which is not even one when I was old enough to at least wipe my own ass, lived with some other street urchins then got snatched by the Brotherhood.” Rat-Tooth said his eyes seemed to glisten but not before rubbing at his eyes for Black Heart to notice if they were tears. “Life has given me what it has thrown at me and I go by it, and so should you even if it was not meant for us to leave. Shade may be a fool, but I give him points for at least trying to attempt such a plan. Even if I wanted to go, where will I  go? What about you kid, where will you go? Spero’Lu has been magically barricaded for half a century and even if we can get out of here out these walls we don’t even know what lies out there!”

Black Heart’s hands tapped a bit at the slab of rubble he sat in taking a pause to think, then he signed. “I don’t know where I would go either, but I’m sure as hell would rather not be stuck in the Brotherhood.”

“So, you rather not be stuck with ol’ Rat-Tooth here for the rest of your life in the Brotherhood?” Rat-Tooth said in mock dismay.

“Unless you want to come I rather not be stuck here, even with you.”

“Well you are your own person I can’t force you to stay. I’m happy to stay where I am, this is the best I got. Unless I have a change of mind I’m staying put.”

“You’re still welcome to join me if you ever change your mind. I’m not sure where I would go but what if I told hypothetically that I want to go find help?”

“I’d say you’re crazy kid, but if it keeps you sane in this shithole then who am I to stop you from not losing hope? But have you ever thought of you know, just accepting what life gave you?”

“I would have but then I would have no reason to live you know? And I am surprised that you in your own way still stuck by me.”

Rat-Tooth looked thoughtful for a second, pausing a moment to take yet another bottle of beer from his secret cache that is within the slabs of rubble they sat in. “I sort of have no choice Shade made me promise. For one thing, before you came along Shade gave me a reason to make me feel like I did not have to do what I had to do. I won’t lie I was jealous when you first came along, all scrawny and timid, well you are not as scrawny now, but you still are the same pushover now.”

Black Heart raised an eyebrow back at Rat-Tooth. “You? Jealous of me?” he signed in disbelief.

“You heard me! You will only hear me say this once, ask me again and I will say I know nothing of such a thing.” Rat-Tooth grumbled. “You and I look up to Shade like he is our own big brother and mentor, our reason to stay hopeful despite being part of the Brotherhood. While I like to think I am close to the guy I always felt like he sees a lot of himself in you as well as the fact he is more closer with you”

“He does?”

“Yeah, why else would he put most of his time training your Aninergio abilities more than me? I mean I may not be as skilled as Shade but I am able to hold my own well enough. Actually, you used to actually be quite good at it at such a young age.”

“I can’t really imagine that.”

“That’s because you don’t put that much self esteem to yourself, you don’t know your worth. A kahunore is as strong as they feel whether their Aninergio is powerful or not, they, well we make the best of it. You’re lucky the Doc decided for you to keep your ‘free will’. Having it taken away is usually comes with the package of wearing the obligos mask, but it still requires your free will to tap into your powers full potential that’s a given. I know you can be powerful when you put your mind into it, maybe if you stand up to yourself more often maybe just maybe you can be accurate with aiming and NOT get exhausted so quickly you have to be careful how you divide your strength.”

“It’s hard to control it.”

“So is life, you take what is given, but I guess in your case you take, and you do with what you have and go forward. Shade would have told us to find another way to it, although I call bullshit on this, we’ve tried to find another way with no success.” The older kahunore said, in a quick motion he tapped lightly at Black Heart’s necklace. “If it were not for me you wouldn’t have what was Shade’s most prized possession here as well as that coat of yours that used to belong to him that you refuse to shorten for some reason. He would have wanted you to have them both, if anything were to happen to him. Which considering you were there at the time you know already did happen.”

The younger kahunore gave a defeated sigh he felt himself on the verge of tears but resisted, he signed. “It shouldn’t have happened to him. He didn’t deserve what happened to him.”

“Yeah, but unfortunately we can’t turn back the time you know? Shade is too good a kahunore to be a part of the Brotherhood despite his cut-throat skills which is sort of suspicious…. But you know what?  If Shade came back as a ghost with a vengeance, I swear he would have wringed my neck if I didn’t fulfill the promise on keeping an eye on you, or at least be that person that is being leaned on after those appointments of yours and teaching you about your abilities. I admit I am not the best mentor to you and I can be an ass to you at times but I’m no monster.”

Black Heart made a sound that is an attempt of a laugh which sounded quite strained, “What worse could happen to me other than getting a prosthetic limb and an obligos mask stuck to my face semi-permanently? It can’t be any worse than death and you’d believe he’d haunt you if I ended up worse than being harmed?”

“No, death would be a mercy to both of us but there are things worse than your predicament it can’t get any worse than being the Brotherhood’s reminder why you should not escape. While I do not believe in no ghost, I am not about to try to wake up the wrath of Shade if he knows I did not honor my promise to make sure you can hold your own, he will find some way I swear by it.” Rat Tooth said in a tone that sounded cheerful drinking down his second drink. “So, I think this is enough time for rest, you think you are willing to try again?”

Black Heart didn’t feel as fatigued, but he felt energized enough to stand up which he did, this pleases the older kahunore.

“Good,” Rat-Tooth said getting up as well drink in hand. “Now we are going to see if you can still do that other Aninergio stance of using those ‘spirit tendrils’ to pick up stuff like you did Crash and Burn try it on those other cinder block dummies over there.”

The young kahunore just nodded before he followed Rat-Tooth back to the makeshift training ground to try to test his abilities once again.

About an hour later Black Heart parted ways with Rat-Tooth on the pretense that they will have to meet back later in the evening for sparring practice with the other Brotherhood members, something he is not looking forward to. The day is still young as he has time to waste before he had to go back to the Den. He decided to wander around the slum areas at least once before going back. He walked a familiar path realizing this is the same one he took that same night a week ago, although now that its an earlier part of the afternoon.

He saw a stray bottle in the ground with what may have been old dried blood the place he saw the girl and her companion who was unconscious at the ground at the time. He looked ahead of the path from where the crossroads ahead of him lead to. He knows from there considering from the direction he was from it leads towards the slum area. Taking a step forward the kahunore went towards there. He didn’t know exactly what he will do other than being a presence to be avoided by the slum residents, but he knows he has time to spare for now.

He walked that direction for few minutes, he can hear noises of people going about their business but just barely. The buildings becoming more recognizable than the Brotherhood territory although some have holes on the walls enough for a person to fit through. Just when he is sure he is by himself he could of sworn he heard murmuring from where his ears can’t quite detect. He was so intent on trying to find the source of the possible voices that he didn’t realize a breeze blowing from behind him causing the hem of his coat to be blown he bit and his foot happened to step on it and before he can realize he stumbled.

While he did not completely fall flat on his face he tripped in such a way that his knees ended up hitting the ground first then his hands next, the reaction being that now his knees hurt from contact of the ground. If Black Heart could right now he would be shouting obscenities of how much it hurts. Instead he gave out a hoarse, unintelligible shout of pain. He rubbed at the knee that got hurt the most hugging at his legs in a curled position. For a moment as he was trying so hard not to whimper in pain he thought he heard the noise of a faint snicker, hushed whispers and then the sound of footsteps, light ones. This time he has a good idea where the noise is and thrust his head to the left there just a few yards away from a huge cracked hold in the wall on a nearby building emerged a girl in her teens.

From her wavy dark hair braided into a ponytail, her brown skin, to her mostly grey clothes he recognized her, and while he can’t quite see the color of her eye color that clearly from the distance the eyepatch still covers her left eye just like she appeared that fateful night that he saved from danger.

They locked gazes not quite sure what to make of it from each other, however Black Heart felt uneasy the way she looked back at him, being ignored or jeered at by most of the Brotherhood is one thing being regarded with curiosity and caution from a mere slum resident is something else. The girl’s pose is guarded, but she didn’t give out the vibe to him that she was a threat, just wary of his presence. Seeing her there almost made him forget the pain he got himself in from tripping but by then it was fading away. Not taking off his gaze off her he picked himself up in a careful manner studying the girl’s body language, she did not budge from her position. Once he got both his feet at the ground, he noticed the girl take a few small steps towards him.

This got Black Heart taken aback, many questions were buzzing through his head, ones such as: ‘Why is she here?’ why is she coming towards me? ‘what do I do?” among other things.

Usually as a Brotherhood member, the average citizen whether they come from the slums or the well off areas they would be wary and not dare go near much less talk to any Brotherhood member rather its more of avoidance and pretending all is normal while keeping a safe distance. This person however, this girl he had saved from danger of being hurt by his colleagues is standing before him nervous but not backing out from him. He could scare her off or even walk away and act like this all did not happen but no, he still stood there, curious yet wary about this girl’s intentions being here.

“Are you alright?” the girl called out, her voice wavered as if unsure at first what exactly to say first to a Brotherhood member who hurt himself by tripping on his own coat.

Her question got Black Heart bewildered considering this girl sounded genuinely concerned about his wellbeing. That’s when he realized he tripped on himself and she must have saw him fall in such a undignified manner; then again all his dignity was gone the moment this mask was first put on his face. Still however he felt his own face warming up from embarrassment, the one positive thing he can be okay about having a mask on all the time is at least that the eyepatch girl won’t notice the skin of his face turning red. He snapped out his moment of unease when noticed she was fidgeting where she stood, her expression somewhat a cross of being scared yet concerned directly at him. Black Heart nodded in a brisk manner to indicate that he is indeed alright, since by then the pain on his knees subsided but that seemed enough to please her as she gave a sigh of relief.

“So uh…I think I have something of yours.” The girl said putting her hand on the satchel she tied around her waist.

She was quite flustered looking through her bag as she seemed to the kahunore’s perspective taking a while. His ears detected the sound of metal clinking from her satchel, wondering what she could possibly be keeping in there. Until finally she took something out, Black Heart squinted his eye a bit and noticed she is holding what looked like a familiar small bottle in her hand, the smelling salts he gave her to revive her friend.

“It’s yours isn’t it?” the girl said showing it to it outstretching her hand holding the object as she trembled a bit “Maybe you’d want it back?”

He doesn’t blame the girl for her unease, and its all because of a particular red bandana with an insignia he wears around his arm showing whom he associates with unfortunately. He went towards the girl noticed how she stepped back a bit, noticed that she has not decided to run away despite him approaching her. Coming closer to her which he stopped at a stride’s length from her, Black Heart this time noticed the color of her eye, they are brown, well more like a golden honey color, quite expressive for she looked at him in fascinated awe. Looking from her eye to her outstretched palm he reached out and took the small bottle from her and put it back in his belt satchel.

Despite her being in a way scared of him she did not take her hand away in fear but she did it casually as if she just gave him a handshake as a friendly gesture.

“Before you go,” the girl said looking away from Black Heart for a moment as if thinking carefully before glancing back at him. “I know this is probably unexpected of me for saying this to you seeing that you are wearing a particular bandana around your arm…er.. But I just want to say thank you for saving my life and my friend’s.”

Those last two words stunned the kahunore as if it struck him but it wasn’t of pain but of warmth of this validation. he never expected at all for her to say her gratitude to him at all much less confronting him about it. Truth be told despite his affiliation he didn’t care what would happen to him if the Brotherhood found out, it just felt right, and he still stood by what he did then.

Using his right hand, he did a smooth motion, “You’re welcome.” He said in sign hoping in some way maybe she’d understand what he is conveying with his hands.

The girl saw the motion and her eye widened. “You sign?” she answered back with her hands.

Another surprise that has take Black Heart aback. First, her appearance out of seemingly nowhere, saying her thanks and now this. Since Shade’s death it is only Rat-Tooth who made the effort to communicate and understand him when not using his voice.

He raised his right hand slowly closed palmed and did a nodding motion with it. “Yes.” He replied then with both his hands he said. “You just saw me do that.”

His statement seemed to crack a smile, maybe an attempt to laugh out from the girl but her mirth was as quick as he had first saw it and she went back being on guard, tense as ever.

“Is your friend alright?” Black Heart asked hoping maybe she will say something back willingly.

“He’s fine actually, he has recovered well from his injury since.” The girl replied with her voice this time, unlike his voice, she does not sound at all like it was strained to speak, smooth and sincere in her tone.

Relief was the emotion that the kahunore in her face, he remembered seeing the unconscious body of her friend, a wolfboy. He remembered after beating up beat up his colleagues unconscious, which led to lending the bottle of smelling salts to her. He didn’t exactly stay long to see what happens after as that time he was taking the danger from her. It gave him a peace of mind her companion did not succumb to something serious.

He noticed the girl was going to say something else, but a noise caught his ears, he looked behind him briefly. The sounds he heard are definitely murmurings, laughter and mean-spirited talk. He recognized the voices to be other Brotherhood members going towards that direction where he stood. Swerving towards the girl he signed in a rapid fashion. “You should hide! Before you get caught!”

It took a second for the girl to comprehend what he is warning, she was going to attempt to say something but stopped herself and ran back into the crack of the wall she emerged from in the first place. The moment she disappeared in the other members have arrived, he can hear them jeering at him.

“Hey, it looks like Trash Heart here wants to start sparring practice early!” He heard one of them tell the other members.

His heart racing hoping that strange girl is hidden he faced them. They were all leering at him, one of them in particular picked up a rock throwing it up and down menacingly. He is obviously outnumbered five to one, the best he could do now is run and bolted away from them he did. Black Heart fortunately missed the rock being thrown at him and ran without hesitation, he can hear the sound of footsteps hitting the pavement and the shouts and hollering of his own fellow members out for his blood. His venture to the slum area will have to wait another day, and for his sanity he hopes that girl has enough time to escape.

Knighted- Chapter 3

I was gonna wait a little longer but whatevs here it is haha. Looking to know if people like it or not so i encourage comments on this on ^u^

There were a lot of things that were difficult to adjust to in his new life; a few things he had expected, and a handful he hadn’t been prepared for in the slightest. In the whole scheme of things he had never expected to make it to the castle or ever have an audience with the king. He had been thinking that he was just going to be taken to the captain of the guard and be assigned to door duty, simple and done.

Now, that had happened, just with a few more grandiose things ahead of it then he had been ready for. Fairly immediately after setting himself up in his room he did get to meet the captain of the guard and he did get assigned to guard a door. It was just the captain of the royal guard, and it was a much bigger door.

And also the captain was a woman, which was a surprise. And a five-foot-tall pink haired woman at that.

 Nino was knocked clean from his train of thought by a rather sudden and brutally vicious blow to the stomach, knocking the air out of his lungs and bringing him to his knees. He planted his hands down hard, dropping his sword and clutching at the thick blue cloth of his unarmored guard’s uniform with one gloved hand, fighting to get his breath back as he heard the captain shout out to him.

“ON YOUR FEET LAHIFFE, where do you get off taking a hit like that!? Quit your daydreaming, you’re on first spar!”

Nino dragged in a harsh breath through his teeth, groaning a bit as he looked up and across the training courtyard to see Alix Kubdel, sitting up high on a retired stack of training dummies with an amused grin on her face.

“Yes mam’,” he wheezed, fumbling for his sword and trying to ignore the guards laughing around him. He just stood as best he could and got his bearings again, taking a look around as his unit prepared for that days sparring run.

 It was late summer, practically the end of it now, and he had realized just that morning that it had been almost three months since he first arrived. The kingdom was preparing at large for the Fall planting and, for the most part, the eager gossip about a common boy in the castles’ guard was finally starting to die down. He’d reflect on the life of living in a city but he didn’t have much to recall, because pretty much since the second he had knocked on the armory door and met his commanding officer he had been pushed to his limit.

He got it, understood it perfectly. He was a farm kid; he knew a thing or two about sword fighting but absolute crap about anything else. He wanted to be stubborn and bold, retaliating against anybody who told him he didn’t match up to anyone else, but he couldn’t. The fact of the matter was that every member of the guard had been trained to fight since birth and was a thousand times more versed in castle order and societal etiquette then he was. It couldn’t be ignored. However, the real thing that set him apart was that he accepted that.

As much as it may have made him grind his teeth in the beginning he kept his head down when he was spat at, but paid attention while he worked. He listened and practiced and worked and he never complained, he just grit his teeth whenever a senior guard would dent his armor or cut through his uniform and he did his job.

And the harder he worked and the more he learned and the better he did, the less they could say to him.

It took him a month to sit at their table as they ate with any kind of confidence. A few of the guys were more accepting and had been encouraging him to ignore the crotchity veterans with their heads up their asses, something he held onto like a lifeline though he’d never admit it. He could always sit with Kim and Ivan and they’d do a fair job of telling anyone else to mind their own if they gave him any problems, but he felt a certain kind of pride when he could sit down and nobody said a damn word.

It took him two months for Rodney to crabbily correct the way he fastened his armor on his own, making a slanted comment but moving over to help him all the same. By that point Nino had been starting to realize that every single time sparring came up during training he was always first pick, and Rodney made a comment about how the captain was really doing him a favor even if it didn’t feel like it.

The more guys he took down in one on one matches the less they’d be able to say he didn’t belong there, so it was best just to get it over and done with.

And now at almost three months there was hardly anybody he hadn’t fought. He didn’t always win, he wasn’t indestructible. Actually he lost a good handful of matches right at the start, but something about the way he fought like he had everything to prove gained him respect. Over time the guys he was forced to challenge would have a few more remarks and bits of advice then they did insults, and as the tides in the guard houses started to turn so did his matches.

He worked twice as hard and fought with twice the strength because he didn’t have any other options, and it had been a straight month now without a single loss.

Didn’t mean he was buddies with everybody, as the pulsing pain in his stomach set to remind him. He looked to the side to watch as one of the graying fighters walked away with the shaft of a training spear in his hand and crooked grin on his face, lining up with everyone else for the captain to pick sparring partners to end the day before work set in.

A good number of guys still wanted to see him cut to his knees and sent back to his village, but he took no small amount of pleasure in knowing that, at this point, it was because they were sick of being shown up by him.

Served em’ right.

 “Done laying around?” Alix shot out, smiling as Nino didn’t even pretend to get in line and just took his place at the center of the field. I got the insurance thru my broker. Everything was done by phone. My broker happened to be family of dear friend of mine. At the time i asked for insurance my driver license was suspended already suspended and the reason why was because of child support for which i was going thru courts with my ex. First i decided to insure my car liability and my car was paid in full. On the liability contract it wasn't any question regarding my driver license either was suspended or not. After a week or so i thought to myself that if i get in a accident god forbid and it was my fault i have to may myself for damages and you know for such a car would be very expensive so i asked my broker if i can changed it to full coverage and so they did. on the day i did the change the girl that worked for my broker and assisting me asked me Klodian you are aware your license is suspended. I said yes and i explained the reason y. So she found this insurance company for a low price and she emailed me the contract to sign and fax it to her. now under the questions which i saw of course latter after i was denied claim i saw they were marked all NO and that was done on computer not hand writing. which of course in this case was done by the girl that helped me. Now my broker told me that insurance company should had run your driving record before they issue insurance to you and if they done that they were gone see your driver lisence was suspended. But when my broker asked them why they didnt run it Their answer was that they trusted me based on the contract i signed which to my opinion is BS. Now i want to sue them and all the lawyers they refuse to get my case and my believe is because my car is worth about $4800.00 and they don't see how they can make money out of me and i don't have to pay them up front. Now if i go on small claim max i can go is $3000.00 ????

My car needed a major repair last fall. I work from home and have been trying to pay off student loans so I decided to do without a car for 6 months since I live in a convenient location- I just received my tax return and can afford the major repair. I stopped my car insurance while I wasn't driving since it was $125/mo and I now need to start it back up. I am switching companies since I really didn't like mine- I just got to the questions about insurance lapse does this apply to me since my car wasn't working? I haven't returned my form yet. I hope I didn't screw this up, a friend just told me I should have possibly kept a storage coverage that my rates might skyrocket. It's an older car with no loan attached. I live in MN, perfect driving record, was with the same company for 25 years and had never missed a payment. If it is considered a lapse is there a way to get around it legally like giving/selling my car to my boyfriend and then listing me as a driver so I can use it when needed? We don't live together but he did most of the driving when we did use it- it's not worth much, maybe a few thousand dollars at most- maybe I'd be better off selling my car and getting a new (used) one so I don't have to explain a gap? Car Accident and Insurance?

On 7/24 I was at a Dairy Queen drive thru the person behind me hit the truck I was driving. I was looking at her in the rear view mirror the entire time. She had a cigarette hanging from her mouth that was unlit and she eventually backed up after hitting me. I got out of the truck and looked and I did not see any damage. She then said I didn't move you hit me I then told her No I did not hit you I am in front of you and this truck was never in reverse. Since there was no damage to the truck I did not bother getting any of her information since it was not my fault. On 7/27 I got a call from the police saying she told them I hit her. I gave them my side of the story and they said she had a witness who was a passenger in her car and they will be in touch. I also let them know I had a witness as well. The cop called me back yesterday and wanted to get my insurance information so her and I could exchange information. My question is do I have to give my insurance information to this cop? I did not hit this woman and I think she is trying to get one over on the insurance company. The cop said yesterday I'm surprised the truck does not have any damage because her car does have damage. This truck was a rental truck which was inspected at the time it was dropped back off at the rental company obviously there was no damage to it. This woman looked like she was on something to begin with and I'm guessing she was not paying attention probably looking for a lighter and let off the break and hit me. Which I still don't see how her car would be so damaged. I don't want this con artist having my information. So should I tell the cop I am not giving him my insurance information and tell her to take it to court? Should I get a lawyer? I'm not sure what to do I am 29 years old and I have never been in a accident so I am not sure how to go about this but I know this woman is trying to pull a fast one and I am not going to sit back and let it happen.

How do you propose to prevent insurance companies from becoming lawmakers using collusion which they openly engage in already to prohibit activities? Before Obamacare if you didn't like it you just did without insurance. Insurance companies have had to be conservative with what they mandate and prohibit because of that choice. With that choice gone now what? Insurance companies have regularly engaged in activities to the detriment of a patients welfare in the past. HMOs especially forced Docs not only to give patients substandard but cheaper care they have gone as far as prohibiting doctors from letting you know that you cannot receive the normal standard of care because of restrictions by your insurance. The unprecedented power handed insurance execs by Obamacare will clearly change how medicine is practiced in the US and that doesn't worry you? right now I'm driving a 2008 saturn aura xe, I'm 17 and my insurance is around 200$ a month. I'm looking into buying a new car. i recent ran into money on the stock market. I'm looking into buying a 2008 c-300 mercedes they go for around 15,000-17,000. will my insurance go up a lot? thanks""

AAA car insurance wont return my phone calls?

i was in a car accident on the fourth of july and the guy ran a red. he hit my car and totaled it leaving me injured and now out of work for almost a month. the police report was sent to both insurances (mine & his) saying he is at fault. i and my insurance (state farm) have tried calling his AAA agent several times and they still have not called back. i have also called the supervisor with no returned phone call from her as well. ive asked my insurance and they basically told me to wait for them to call. im getting impatient and i was just wondering if anybody else has ever had this problem? im frustrated and not sure what to do.

I finally got to finishing this fic!! Took me forever because I lost motivation but I’m so glad it came back!! You read the previous parts here on FF.net!

Picking up books that were sprawled all over the floor, I let a distressed sigh as I frowned deeply at what I guessed was the police doing. They completely ruined my store looking for whatever they could find on either me, Gajeel or both, but did they have to make a big mess out of it? Letting out another grunt of irritation, I started to move the furniture back into place. The bright street lights that penetrated through my curtains were my only source of light as I moved around in the darkness.

“You keep making those noises and someone’s gonna hear us.” Gajeel whispered from behind me causing me to jump.

I didn’t hear him approaching, I thought he was still looking around the place to make sure we weren’t being followed or spotted.

“Sorry,” I whispered as I watched him walk toward the front door that I kept covered with a curtain at night, so no one could even think of peeking in here while I’m gone and plot to steal my precious books. “These oafs just doesn’t have any respect for people properties. Big dummies.”

He snickered as he peaked out the black curtain, searching the street once more before turning to me. “Ready to get down to business?” he asked striding towards me with feather like footsteps, that I thought would be impossible for someone as big as he.

Nodding my head, I asked, “Would you like to go down to my office?”

“Too small, I already checked it out, plus the lights from it may be able to be seen from the street even if your curtains cover up your door and windows. Is there somewhere else we can go?”

Shaking my head, I couldn’t think of anywhere but my office until I remembered. “Oh! Follow me!” I exclaimed remembering my little project that I’ve been secretly working on for a few months.

I hurried to my office not looking back to see if Gajeel was following me, knowing he was. Rummaging through the dark, bumping into a few things here and there, I searched frantically through my desk draws. Spending so many years cramped in my office made it easy for me not need a source of light.

“Ah Ha! I found it!” I smiled brightly as I plucked a key from beneath a stack of unknown papers. Grabbing Gajeel’s hand I pulled him out of my office and down a very narrow and short hallway. It took me awhile to find the door knob and the lock in which to stick the key. It took some doing but when the door opened, a triumph sigh escaped my lips as the door squeaked.

I searched to the right of the wall for the light switch, flipping it on, watching as the old bulbs flicker to dull life with a smile. A small set of concreate stairs lead to a basement with matching concrete floors and walls. A small desk sat in the middle of the room, along with an old desk chair and a small futon like bed that occupied the far corner with a small dresser beside it. A curtain concealed a bathroom for privacy in the other corner. The basement wasn’t big but it wasn’t overly small either, it was just the right size.

“What is this?” Gajeel asked as he closed the door behind us, following me down the steps.

Chuckling, more to myself than him, I said, “a small project I’ve been working on. I want to turn this basement into a children area or even like a day care, I haven’t decided yet. I’ve been working on this for a while now but of course all that’s been halted since you kidnapped me and all.”

“No, no, you’re an accomplice remember?” he smiled surveying the room with his hands in his pockets. “So, I’m guessing you sleep here too?” he asked kicking the futon with the tip of his boot.

“Mmm, sometimes when I’m too tired to drive back home. I get so focused when planning this place that I lose track of time. Everything works down here, the plumbing and of course the electricity as you can tell.”

He picked up a few paint swatches I had on the desk, snickering at the girly colors I picked. He continued to look around, even threw back the curtain to the bathroom to reveal a small shower barely big enough for him, a toilet and sink cramped into a small space.

“Are you done scrutinizing my area, so we can get down to business?”

He nodded his head, taking one more look around before walking over to the desk that I leaned on. I cleared off all the extra stuff and put them in the desk draws so he could have space to do whatever he needed. I sat out a few sheets of paper and pencils so he could use them if need be.

He plopped down into my desk chair, wincing when it creaked loudly under his weight. “Alright, I’m going to roughly draw the layout of my building then the inside and show you what to do.”

I listened to him talk for what felt like hours, as he described in immense detail every aspect of his building, inside and out. He slowly walked me through the procedure of what he wanted me to do and asking if I had any questions and didn’t mind when I did. We did this more times than I can count but I was glad he did, so we both could be sure nothing went wrong.

“Now that we got everything down, I have one question for you.” he said looking up at me as I sat on the desk with my legs crossed facing him.

“And what is that?”

“Do you own anything black?”

“Actually,” I said sliding off the desk and walking towards the small dresser. “I do.” Pulling out a black long sleeve sweater, skirt, tights and boots, I held them in my arm to show him. “Is this ok?”

“Yep, get dressed, we’re leaving as soon as-“

“Um, I’m going to shower first. It’s been awhile since I used an actually shower, so I’m going take advantage of the one that actually works.” I said cutting him off. He gave me a weird look before laughing and shaking his head.

“I guess I agree with you there, would you mind if I took one after you?”

“Not as long as you don’t mind the smell of my soap.”

He shrugged, not caring either way as long as he could enjoy the same luxury I craved. I grabbed two towels and tossed one to him and immediately turning my back to him so I could quickly make my way to the bathroom. Putting the toilet cover down, I sat my clothes on top and started the shower. The pipes gurgled and groaned a little before spurting out a blast of cold water that slowly turned warm. Stepping into the warm stream, I relished in the sensation, glad to feel the water rush over my face and body. I worked the soap into suds and washed myself clean of all the dirt, grim and sweat, mentally going over the plan to be sure not miss any tiny detail.

Once we were both done showering, I felt bad that I was the only one with fresh new clothes on, so I made a mental note to grab some clothes for the oversized guy that couldn’t fit even my biggest shirts. He ran a hand through his damp hair, combing the knots out with his fingers as he ran through the plan one more time. I was too busy staring at him, to pay attention to his words.

Why did I still like him so much, after all he have done, but yet I can’t even bring myself to hate him? I can smack him though and a small red blotch on his cheek was proof of it. I knew what he was planning to do all along. He wants me to hate him, to despise him but yet still be able to trust him. I can’t deny that I liked when he touched me, but was pissed at myself for liking it too much and pissed at him for the reason for doing it.

“Do you got it?” he asked snapping me out of my thoughts, causing me to nod my head quickly in response. “Alright then let’s go!”

We hurriedly left my shop and into the car, seeing the digital clock in the car strike 2:13 am. I guess we did talk for hours.

It took us 10 minutes to reach his apartment and park a good distance from it without looking too suspicious to the two undercover cops we spotted.

“Ok, don’t forget what I said and remember, you have about 20 minutes to get in and out am I clear?”

“I didn’t forget,” I smiled tucking stray strands of blue hair into the hood of my jacket in order to fully disguise myself. He reluctantly let go of my arm as I opened the car door and stepped out into the chilly night air.

I walked the block to his apartment at a brisk pace with my head down, both hands wrapped tight around the strap of the hobo bag I carried. I looked like all the other night walkers trying to hurry out of the cold embrace of the night and into the warmth of their homes. When I made it to the door of his apartment building, I quickly made my way inside and into the old stairwell. I made sure to avoid all security cameras and kept my head down. This building is so old it reeked of mold and cigarettes. Lucky for me the only cameras in this place were in the hallways in certain areas and in the elevator.

“So far so good,” I breathed as I eased myself quietly into Gajeels dark apartment. My eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness as I stealthily crept around trying not to disturb the mess the cops made out of his apartment. I first made my way to his tiny kitchen, opening his freezer and stuck my arm deep into the back. Standing on my tippy toes, I grunted and groaned as I grasped at a Tupperware container with a dent in the lid. After the container was retrieved and placed into my bag, I quickly made my way to his couch and stuck my arm underneath once again grasping for a small box that was nestled in between the wood frame of the old couch. Once that was released, I took a quick glance at the clock to see that I had 10 more minutes. Climbing all the way to the 7th floor took a lot longer than I thought. Hurrying to his closet and dresser, I grabbed whatever I could and stuffed them into my bag. It was heavy, but I didn’t mind the weight as I made my way out. My heart was pounding hard against my ribcage as I snuck out the back door of the apartment building.

“Hey you!” a voice called out from behind me stopping me in my tracks and causing my chin to connect to chest in order to hid my face.

Taking a deep breath I slowly turned around and greeted the stranger. “Yes?”

My heart was beating a lot faster now and my lungs constricted begging for air as I held my breath in anticipation. Was I too obvious that I don’t belong here? Did someone recognize me? My fingers gripped the bag I was carrying tighter as my body shook with fear.

The stranger took one step towards me holding out something in his hand. “You dropped this.” He said as I took a shirt from his hands.

Thanking the man, I stuffed the shirt into my bag and walked away, finally releasing the puff of air that I was holding.

When I made it back to the car, I shot Gajeel a cool smile expecting him to look relieved but he only shot me an angry scowl instead.

“What’s wrong?” I asked hoping he didn’t see the scene that played out before I reached him.  

“We’ll talk about it when we get back but for now, let’s get outta here.” He sighed weaving the car back into the street.

I dropped the bag on the desk with a flop when we got back, taking out everything I snatched from his apartment. “I hope you don’t mind me grabbing some of your clothes, while I had the extra time.” I said separating the items into piles.

I thought he would be happy when I turned around to look at him but he only had a look of discomfort as if he ate something with a terrible after taste to it.

“Can you tell me what’s wrong now?” I asked confused by his expression.

Grabbing me by the shoulders, he squeezed them tightly, “what were you thinking? You could’ve gotten caught or worse they could’ve thought you were me and shot you!” He yelled so loud my ears rung.

“Why are you mad at me?! I was just trying to help you! And there’s no way they would’ve thought I was you! I’m too small!”

He shook his head, “That guy that stopped you, what if he was the cops or saw you? I knew I should’ve done it myself, you could’ve-“

“But I didn’t get caught and the guy that stopped me only did so, because he wanted to give me the shirt I dropped! Your shirt might I add, because I wanted to help you!” I interrupted just as furious as he was. “I made it out safely without anyone seeing me! I did everything you told me to do! I’m sorry that I felt guilty, because you didn’t have any clean clothes, so with my extra time I grabbed some for you!”

“You could’ve gotten hurt!” Pain laced his voice and hurt filled his eyes. “I should’ve left you with your friend Cana.” He said letting me go and turning his back towards, but I quickly grabbed his arm causing him to turn back around.

“You can’t get rid of me that easily, and I know you care about me as much as you care about Rogue,” I softly said cupping his face in my palms. “No matter what you do or say is going to make me change my mind about you. I know you did not kill those people.”

“How can you be so sure about that, Levy?” he whispered placing his hand above mine, with broken eyes.

I’ve never seen him so vulnerable or open before. I can see how beaten, broken and tired his soul was. He may have done bad things in his past but now, I can see someone else was responsible for what happened that terrible night on the docks. I want to mend his broken heart and soul, I know I can.

Leaning in closer, I pressed my lips against his, feeling his initial shock at the sudden act but then felt his body mold against mine. My hand moved from his face to get tangled in his hair, as our kiss started out soft then gradually became rough. His lips were oddly soft and warm and his tongue tangled with mine as our kiss steadily got sloppy. Teeth bumped against teeth and tongues searched the others mouth. My mind fogged over with lust as his hands groped my butt sending tingles up my spine and heat pooled into my stomach.  

My heart was soaring and my brain was left in the dust as we both gave in to our need for each other. The need to touch, to feel.

I felt his hand move behind me in a quick motion, knocking everything out of his away and onto the ground. Grabbing me by the hips, he picked me up and placed me on the desk. I pulled him as close as I could with my legs wrapped around his waist and my hands roaming over his torso as his was doing the same. A foreign noise escaped my lips as I felt his bulge press against me and his hand ghosting over my nipple. I shivered under his touch but yet my body was on fire with carnal need for this man.

Ditching reason to the wind I dipped my hands lower to make quick work of his belt as he frantically took off his shirt, tossing it to the side. He did the same to my shirt and pulled my skirt off of me nearly ripping it into two, with his lips and tongue eliciting soft moans from me as he nibbled my neck, then soothing the burning skin with a swirl of the tip of his tongue and soft kisses.

We were almost at our breaking point, almost about to reach all we could take of the teasing, when a mood crashing jingle rung from his pocket.

“Gajeel?” I asked, panting as our little dance came to a screeching halt.

He burrowed his head in to the crook of my neck, growling as he squeezed my hips and press himself against me, causing me to gasp at the sensation for his need for me.

The phone continued to ring in his pants pocket that was currently around his ankles and he was reluctant to answer it.

“Gajeel. You know you have to answer it.” I smiled, stroking his back as he shook his head letting out a frustrated grunt. Giggling at the big bad wolf as he raised his head to look at me with clouded and frustrated eyes, I stroked his cheek. “Just answer it. I’m not going any-“

I was briefly interrupted by the soft kiss he planted on my lips, completely thrown off by the sweet gesture rather than a rough kiss I was expecting to receive.

I was in a daze when he peeled himself away from me, too busy spacing out to realize he was slowly taking a sweep of my body.

Huffing, “you’re too sexy for your own good,” he huffed as he pulled his pants up zipping it up for the moment, letting it his boxers show.

“I could say the same for you,” I said in sultrier voice than I meant too.

“You’re not making this easier,” he smiled devilishly as he plucked the cell phone from his pocket.

Placing it to his ear, he greeted the person on the other line, then suddenly became stiff. His eyes shot to me in a panic before walking away from whispering into the phone. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up as if to alarm me that something was clearly wrong. And I prayed to god that it had nothing to do with Rogue.
