Look, you can hurt him, you can ruin his reputation, you can do whatever. But to kidnap you just because of your association with him is where he draws the line. As soon as he gets word on what happened he's finding out your location straight away.

And as soon as he knows it, he'll find a way to get you back and the perpetrators won't know what hit them until they wake up to find you gone and a note from the man himself, Sampo Koski.

Blade is pissed. Sure he may not always have time for you however he cares for you a lot. You are his kid, and once word gets to him that you're kidnapped? He is tracking you down no matter how long it takes or the amount of bodies gets left in his trail to find you.

He gets SilverWolf to help track your location and as soon as he knows he's off to get you. He only has to pray to whatever Aeons that you're blindfolded as he's not wasting a minute in hearing the cries of mercy, they don't deserve it.

Once he gets you home he inspects you to make sure you're fine, to ensure you're not hurt. He never lets you leave his sight after that, or anyone's for that matter. If he must leave for a mission he asks for the other members or even Elio to take care of you until he returns.

Argenti truly loves and protects you. As a knight he does this incredibly well so when someone successfully kidnaps you he's more than surprised. He puts a halt in his search for Idrila as looking for his child is far more important in this moment and time.

He isn't sure what he did to get someone to want to kidnap you or if all they want is money. But he will track you down, if they want money then he'll give it to them. However if you are hurt upon returning to him or they still refuse to give you back then he isn't afraid to put up a fight.

He won't go too far, he'll merely knock them out and call the appropriate authorities to take them away. He understands that whatever happened shook you. Scared you, so he'll spend more time with you to try and take your mind off things, take you out to various planets to shop. His search for Idrila can wait. For now YOU are his priority

I feel like Gepard oftens leaves you with Serval when he's out on duty. So the chances of you getting kidnapped are rather low as you have an auntie to protect you, not to mention the Silvermane Guards outside her workshop and how I feel Serval would make small guard robots.

So it comes to a surprise when he finds out you've been kidnapped. He doesn't bother asking questions, for now he quickly gathers a search party and gets others to ask around as he investigates the workshop. Perhaps you were kidnapped by a worker of Serval, this gives Gepard a good idea and he searches the houses of said worker.

Once he finds where you are, he wastes no time in arresting them and anyone else who happens to be in there as he quickly goes to your side to check on your wellbeing. He takes you to the doctors to get you checked up and once you're confirmed to be okay he's relieved.

Bronya gives him a few days off so he can spend time with you, it also gives him time to figure out how to ensure this won't happen again. He still trusts Serval to look after you, and she's already making sure to be careful who she lets work with her but he wants to be doubly sure nothing will happen to you again.

With that said, Hiori woos you with his small gestures like leaving notes (with simple, mundane questions about you or a compliment) in your locker, or maybe your seat. Holding your bag for you, and a small, yet uplifting compliment during your conversations. Sometimes, he'd buy you a drink, lend you his notes when you need it—Hiori likes to woo you in ways that is subtle, yet still, makes his intentions obvious.

Chigiri more or less knows of the dos and don'ts during dates, for his sister had long instilled it to him long ago when he reached adolescence. And Chigiri uses it to his advantages, ensuring that nothing goes wrong to ruin the spark you may(hopefully) have felt as he spends his time with you. Because while seeing you having fun is a priority, his top goal is to make you fall inlove with him a bit more than yesterday.

Gestures like walking you home, ordering what you'd like for you, and observing the littlest of changes(not in a creepy way), Chigiri makes sure to do all of those. He'd hand you his coat should you feel cold, hold your hair for you if ever your dish was a soup (Chigiri knows better than anyone the pain of accidentaly eating your hair), a glimpse of what it'd be like should you say yes to his courtship.

The way he courts isn't as grand, but the effort is shown by the way he stays up planning the dates despite it breng past his curfew. The letters you'd recieve, and a singular flower each and every day, makes it known that he tries his best. That he's sincere, but Chigiri also pulls back if ever he notices the first signs of discomfort, adjusting his plans to suit your comfortability. Actions like those, are what truly charms you and propells you to say yes, not becaude you feel the need to—but because you want to.

It's fluff-o-clock!

Even though he has countless devoted followers and his crew has told him they'd rather die than leave him, Buggy feels alienated and left out when he has to go to social events outside of Karai Bari Island. You'd never know it - he still acts as overconfident and egotistical as he always does - but the whole time he can feel judging eyes on him. He knows they don't take him seriously. He's just the weird little pirate who got lucky, no special skills or insane amounts of power in sight. That's what he's convinced their thinking, at least.

Crocodile and Mihawk, who have grown quite skilled at detecting when their beloved clown is hiding behind a facade of bravado, call him to a meeting. The two of them know something is off the moment Buggy walks into the room, and after some questioning and piecing the puzzle together they're able to discern the truth. Neither of them say anything about it. They just move on to actual business in a way that lets Buggy know they do care but they need time to think.

Fast forward a month or so and Cross Guild has been invited to a party that all the most powerful pirates with the highest bounties will be at. Crocodile and Mihawk finally put their plan into action a few hours before the event. They "make" (those chosen would have done it regardless but our resident goths have a reputation to keep) some of Buggy's most trusted crew members help him get ready, putting his hair in an elaborate style and ensuring his makeup is flawless. Once they complete their task Croc and Hawk swoop in to take their place; they worked together to design an outfit for Buggy that's as "flashy" as he loves while still being fancy. As he finishes getting ready they present him with the final pieces - two label pins shaped like Crocodile's hook and Yoru. They chose pins so that Buggy could still wear all his finest jewelry while still having his boyfriend's claim on him clear for all to see.

Once they're at the party Crocodile and Mihawk never leave Buggy's side; in fact, they subtly turn any attention given to them towards the clown. "Your new cannonballs do sound very formidable, but Buggy could do twice the damage with a ball half the size." "What a fearsome sounding crew. I wonder if they would be enough to beat Buggy and his hundreds of followers." Little compliments sprinkled in the conversation to hype up the blue-haired man. Between Crocodile's social skills and Mihawk's sneakiness, nobody realizes they're spending far more time showing interest in Buggy than conversing with his more powerful partners. The clown actually feels truly confident and like he's being treated as (somewhat) of an equal for once.

At the end of the night they meet in Crocodile's room dressed in their sleep clothes. Buggy's put the two pins in a small box shaped like a treasure chest to show his partners how much he treasures their gifts. They've all settled down and are about to fall asleep when the clown mutters one final comment. "Thanks for being by my side tonight, but you guys know you're as flashily great as I am, right?" He's out before the two can think of a reply.

It's the depression and poor self-esteem the clown shouldn't have because it hinders people From what I've seen it's hard to be someone that many people can rely on them.

Wonder how long did it take for them to fully understand their clown? Probably around six months or less... Who knows 🤷 Anyway, I'm thinking they found a way to make sure Buggy doesn't know that they pieced the puzzle together. That would be cool.

A party that has some of the strongest pirates with the highest bounties... The Straw-hats will be there... Oh boy, that will be a weird conversation to have, won't it! Anyway, yes them being right beside Buggy. Just destroying other people's achievements for Buggy!

That is just so cute!!! Buggy being more confident in himself, acting more like he was when he was younger. Not hiding behind a mask. As well as looking his best, wearing pins that represent Mihawk and Crocodile are always so cute!!!

If Sephiroth lost his mind in a less destructive way and just reverted to the mentality of, say, a 3-5 year old, would Zack take care of him himself in Midgar, spirit him away to the countryside, or take him to a nursing home and visit him a lot? Would Cloud join them?

If Sephiroth were to somehow get reverted to a childlike state, I do actually imagine him taking on some animalistic tendencies. Not a feral child or anything--but just tapping in a LOT more to those alien instincts as a kid than as an adult.

Altho it would be... very awkward at first, I do think Zack would take care of him <3 Sephiroth probably wouldn't even recognize him at first, all those books having completely warped his mind into something vulnerable and splintered and instinctive. Zack would have to approach him calmly--like taming a scared, bristled animal. Seph might back away as Zack tries to step forward, eyes wild and frenzied and unseeing. But Zack would keep going, would take it step by step. He would extend his hand and talk in a low, hushing voice. Talk to the friend that he knows is in there.

"C'mon, buddy... you know me. We're pals."

Sephiroth's breath is labored, a book skidding across the floor as he backs away.

“Please, bud... Don't let them turn you into a monster."

It takes time, it takes patience, but eventually Zack makes a break through. He gets close enough to Sephiroth to place a comforting hand on his shoulder--a gesture of affection that Sephiroth displayed to Zack countless times in ShinRa. Sephiroth doesn't speak, can't find the will to make a coherent sound. But Zack understands from the look in his eyes that Sephiroth remembers him--somewhere in the tangled web of confusion and truth and lies. Somewhere within the threads, there's a part of Sephiroth that knows he is safe.

The bond is fractured, of course, and it takes days upon days of care for Sephiroth to fully trust the person that he's with. They bade Nibelheim and ShinRa goodbye as soon as they left the library, stopping at Cloud's house one last time to have a proper goodbye. Needless to say Cloud is... startled by the drastic shift in his commander. Sephiroth is practically hiding behind Zack the whole time, unwilling to step into the house or even the porch. It's a saddening sight--and Cloud is very confused--but Zack assures his friend that Sephiroth is safer if they leave, even if it's in this condition. The boy understands, sharing a hug with Zack. And, promising not to return to Shinra himself, he watches the two depart into the outskirts of Nibelheim.

What proceeds in the following days is essentially how Zack took care of Cloud--except Sephiroth is conscious on most levels. Zack brings him food and water to eat when he can find them, having to urge Sephiroth to have some H2O and actually digest some nutrients. He's a picky eater, but Zack is always ginger, and ultimately nourishes his friend. They spend the days trekking across the continent, Zack making sure to have his sword ready and always keeping an eye out for helicopter-shaped shadows. At night they sleep under trees--unless lightning storms calls for other arrangements. Separated by a few feet at first, Sephiroth insists on sleeping closer and closer to Zack as the days pile on. His back would be pressed to the other's, just to always ensure that his friend is there. That he hasn't left him. Left him like... like the people in his mind that memory couldn't quite reach, but their spirits still loom in his mind. He's afraid of being alone. Of being abandoned. And every night, feeling the way his friend's body tenses, Zack mumbles to him that he's not going anywhere. And he mumbles it as many times as he needs to until he feels those muscles relax.

This arduous routine carries on for weeks--almost months, And while Sephiroth is nowhere near his normal self, bits and shards of his humanity begin to break through the surface again. He doesn't sleep coiled up anymore, but instead on his side; he stands up straighter and eats with far more care. Once, Zack even hears him trying to croak his name--like he's remembering he can speak, trying with strenuous effort to form the syllables and remember which order they go. Tears nearly welled in his eyes when he recognized the vague sound of a "Z..." pushing its way through Sephiroth's teeth. He's coming back to himself, piece by piece. And with each recruited fragment, the hope in Zack's heart burns even brighter. The hope that everything is going to be just fine. That they won't go back to that hellish life. That nothing is going to hurt them.

Until that day.

One afternoon, when the glaring orb of the sun is blazing high in the mountains, it's not the shadow of a helicopter that Zack spots. No. It's something... sharper. More arched. Almost like--

And the feathers begin floating to the ground.

Zack sprints to where Sephiroth is resting--currently eating a piece of meat that he had used his own Firaga to cook. The warrior hardly has time to register why his friend is so frantic before Zack is standing over his body like a shield. And he hardly has time to register that before a red-cladded figure descends before them--Rapier flaunted, eyes glimmering with vulpine intent.

Genesis laughs that he has finally found Sephiroth after all this time--taunts Zack for being his little guard dog. But what Genesis can't see behind guard dog!Zack is the way Sephiroth is reacting. The way the man is bristling as he listens to his voice, the way his muscles are tethering into knots and the embers purring in his eyes--ready to be ignited. Something inside of him is being stirred; something visceral, something raw. A flash of something that extends beyond his earliest memories of the library--beyond the books and shelves and sickening splatters of words. Something that transcends all of that. Something that catalyzed it. Something that he remembers.

And he hisses.

The conversation--argument--that Genesis and Zack are having is cut short, severed mid-sentence. Genesis initially thinks it's a monster--some piercing sound made by some animal in their proximity. But it's not. Of course it's not. And as Zack sees the look in his eyes, the confusion--all those horrifying feelings he felt when he first found Seph in the Nibel library--he decides to show Genesis the full consequences of his actions.

Visage stern, Zack steps aside, and reveals the hunched, dehumanized Sephiroth behind him. Seph's eyes are blazing--more wild than they hd been in month; his lips are pulled back in a vicious snarl; his muscles are tauter than rope, almost ready to snap at the faintest quiver of his limbs. He looks insane, rabid. Dangerous. Monstrous.

And Genesis is horrified.

He tries asking what the Hell happened to him, tries to get through. But he can't. There's no response--which is somehow the loudest answer he could have been given. Zack takes the reins then and explains exactly what happened--how he found Sephiroth in this state in the Nibel library, all after what happened in the Reactor. After what he learned; after what he was brutally told. Genesis can't speak, is unable to grasp onto any semblance of coherence. He can only take step after step back, staring at his friend--gaping, the glimmer in his eyes extinguished--unable to tear his gaze away from the sight of his old friend.

The first words he sputters are messy, broken. Pained. They're laden with something--heavy with some ghostly form of regret and sorrow. They're words that are sunken deep, poisonous and dry in his throat. But he gets them out anyway. He needs to. He needs to, because they are eating his voice away.

"This.. this isn't what I wanted..."

But it's what he got. It's what he did. The words are no more healing outside his lips than they were inside his body. He continues to stand there, staring at his shattered friend, feeling so incredibly caged amid the endless swaths of stone and mountain surrounding them. He drops his sword, lets the echo ripple and rattle. He wants to clutch his chest; he wants to fall to his knees. He wants to say something that matters.

He... he wants to...

"Can... can he hear me?"

Zack, recognizing the genuine swarm of emotions consuming the auburn, lets his visage soften. His eyes lose a lot of their malice, his heart slackens from its vengeful grip. And he responds to the question honestly.

"I don't know, really... but I think so."

It's all Genesis needs to hear. With a lump of iron in his throat, he begins to cautiously approach the snarling Sephiroth--step by step, inch by inch, like he was barefoot and walking on a sheet of flaming coals.

"Sephiroth... it's not true, okay? I was wrong. Do you hear me...? I was wrong."

Sephiroth doesn't take his eyes off of him.

"Don't listen to what I said... please. I was angry... so angry. And i just wanted your help. And... and I didn't know what to do when I couldn't get it."

A flicker, distant and almost imperceptible. A glimpse of something. A response.

'You're not... okay? Please, just listen to me. You're not one. Okay? Okay..?! Do you hear me?!"

Sephiroth closes his mouth, loosening... listening. Watching as the red-cladded figure grows closer and closer. Closer and closer. Zack doesn't intervene, doesn't say a word. He recognizes the shift, can feel it in the air--the faint shadow of a smile falling onto his lips as Genesis continues to approach him.

"Please... you're not.. you're not a monster, Sephiroth. Don't do this. Please. I'm..."

A deep, broken breath rattles through the air. A swallow. A choke. And the unmistakable shimmer of a teardrop.

"I'm sorry, my friend. I'm... I'm so sorry... for everything"

He is practically standing in front of Sephiroth now, legs shaking. Weak. The air had grown significantly thicker, a dense and heavy pressure weighing on all three's shoulders. Sephiroth has gone completely silent--his mouth closed, his muscles untethered, the embers controlled and purring. He stares at the red-cladded man for a long stretch of time, not saying a word. Almost like he's thinking. Considering.

Until. suddenly, faster than the speed of a bullet, the man pounces.

"Seph, DON'T!--

But he hadn't pounced to attack; he hadn't pounced to kill.

Instead, the man had lunged forward, and wrapped his arms around the winged SOLDIER.

Tighnari is so comforting, his presence is just full of warmth and feels like refuge and rn he's the first character I think of when I'm too depressed to function but not depressed enough to stop fantasizing about fictional characters lmao. He'd just have this sense for when you're in a funk, schedule someone else to patrol for him, and then proceed to spend the day taking care of you in the most natural way possible without even giving you a chance to protest. And if you try to insist you're fine or apologize for wasting his time he'll just (fondly) scoff at you and remind you that it's his duty and utmost priority to ensure the well being of all those under his care, and that includes you (because fr nothing is more important to him!!). You need to be held? He's pulling you closer and wrapping his fluffy tail around you and brushing your hair back to press the softest kisses to your forehead. You just want his silent company? Welt as a dad is a 10/10. He would be so supportive no matter what you'd want to be. He has his own child back in his actual universe after all and takes care of him so well.

He's the type to proudly show those messy drawings his kid makes to his friends and act like his kid is the next Pablo Pacasso even if all they drew was a stick figure.

Blade as a father? Now I wouldn't say he's the worst but he's not the best either. Biological or not, if he was tasked to take care of a kid, he will. Except when it comes to affection. He'll try his best but his job makes it hard for him to really be home and hang out with his kid, not to mention he still has that want to die. Jing Yuan I think is also a great father! Though like Blade, his job does make him unavailable most of the time. Especially since he's a General.

BUT, we both know this man would drop anything if his kid were to message/call or anything of the source of they were in trouble. Even if it was to just make a complaint about the babysitter he hired to take care of his kid.

He does everything he should to ensure his kid is loved and taken care of, and sure he may not have as much time as he'd like to spend time with his kid, he tries his best.

As a father, I'd give him a 9.5/10.

I'm unsure what Luochas thoughts on about taking care of kids in all honesty. As a doctor himself, he is aware of the cycle of life but whether or not he wishes to be apart of helping the kid grow up is unknown.

I don't think he'd have any adopted kids or something like that, however if he were to get someone pregnant he wouldn't leave them. He was a factor in how the baby was made and if the other person wishes to give birth to said kid then he'll help.

He's not a distant father per say, maybe strict but he doesn't mean to come out as harsh. He does everything a father should do and encourages his kid to study and all. He's not the most amazing father to have, honestly his kids probably prefer their other parent over him (Unless they left him and he became a single father)

All in all, while he may not be the best father he's not the worst and probably is just your average dad. 8/10

I love Dan Heng so much if you didn't know (I say as if my tumblr theme isn't Dan Heng) and this isn't even a bias but I do think he'd be a good father.

He's so worried he won't be but he really is. He remembers everything his kid likes and dislikes and applies it when he's cooking or buying something in general. He won't force his kid to do anything they don't want and will help them study.

Why Anko Uguisu is A Great Villain

Call of the Night is a great anime that took me on a loop. At first, the show is pretty wholesome with Nazuna and Yamori just spending time together with the night appearing to be so liberating and fun.

Sure, the introduction of the Vampire Council somewhat pulls the rug out from under Yamori because they introduce the one-year deadline for him to become a vampire and if not, they will kill him. Even then, the Vampire Council display that they are not necessarily "evil" but more that copulate as a means of ensuring that their kind is preserved.

There are a few that have no qualms about killing people to keep the knowledge of their existence from being known, but you could argue that it is like how we treat cattle. We breed cattle, then harvest them for food, and you don't see that being called out as "evil." And we do have an episode where one of the members of the clique works in a maid cafe that later transforms into a mystery episode to lighten the mood.

But any chance for the show to resume being just a cute, wholesome experience was shattered with the introduction of Anko.

Anko is such a good, effective villain because she challenges Yamori on why he wanted to be a vampire. He at first believed for it to be a liberating experience, but then he is confronted with the appearance of a vampire man who had staved off blood for ten years and immediately tries to drink Akira's blood.

This was a man who was unknowingly wooed by a vampire and was transformed against his consent, but once he realized what happened, he could not remedy his mistake instead opting to refrain from blood and almost succeeded had Yamori and his friends not have been there.

She brings the hammer down again on the poor boy when he called her out for murdering the man. In some ways, Anko is right to be disgusted by Yamori's reaction because this man was clearly suffering and did not WANT that drastic life change.

Yamori has to come to the realization that, for all the perceived pros of becoming an offspring, there were several cons. He truly did not understand vampires. Not every single one is like Nazuna and makes lewd jokes or is love intolerant. Seri and the Council have expressed a willingness to kill due to their belief that human rules/morals did not apply to vampires. He had to realize some would be willing to resort to lying or deceiving people to make more offspring.

Yet at the same time, Anko is also incorrect. Much like people, not every single vampire is bad. Even those like Niko who smashes a table in half out of blind anger and views Yamori as a liability, she is at the same time reasonable and negotiable. Seri, who was willing to kill Akiyama after she spilled the beans about being a vampire, can't do it because she actually had grown to care for Akiyama as a friend but was willing to let Akiyama forget about her since the Council viewed interacting with humans in ways that did not involve increasing the ranks as "inappropriate." There was even the off chance that Yamori would not be killed immediately.

So, Anko is correct to a degree that some vampires are bad, perhaps as bad as people or worse, but she does not care. She is someone who cannot be reasoned with. She resolved to destroy the night and wipe out vampire kind regardless of whether or not there are some decent ones. Even as she was being "gentle" with the vampire at the school and gave him a gift reminding him of his past life, in the same breath, she is a ruthless hunter who calls the police on Yamori bringing the story to its highest stake.

But that is why she is a great villain for the show. She makes the main character reevaluate what being a vampire truly entailed, and she is undeterred in her self-appointed goal being fueled by an undying hatred. One that I can just anticipate will be her undoing in the end.

i personally think he wouldn’t take a date at the angels share over a picnic, he probably gets a bit antsy if he hasn’t been outside all day or has for only very minimal amounts of time. of course he understands if you don’t want to go out and lay on a blanket under windrise, and is willing to compromise with one spread on a balcony within the city, or a roof if you’re willing. anywhere where he can see the stars, where the wind blows through his hair, where he’s quite literally in his element.

one perk of being the creator is that you don’t have to worry about bug bites or allergies anymore, nor about getting sick. but above all, your wants matter, and if you insist on a more traditional dinner then he’ll oblige. he’d obviously prefer balcony seats—or just anything near a window, really—but a relationship is a two way street, and he’s willing if it makes you happy.

How do UK bros, as individual persons, gain their societal status within the governments (i.e. getting recognized centuries ago)?

So, I think it happened similarly for all of them, and many many years ago

Starting to go their own way after initially spending most of their time together, they would have been drawn to both the largest groups of their people and also wherever the power was. Ports, markets, large community groups- they wouldn't have stayed just one place but would have moved between them all. This far back, there wasn't just one king, or one structure of power either. Different clans and different Kings ruled different parts of the island all at once, nothing at all like it is today

To each, they would have gone for a time and tried to get close

I think that when they were still very young, explored in this fic and this fic, there was more of an innate knowing amongst their people about who they were. Their mother's people, deeply tied to the land and the seasons and their gods, revered her and them, and understood without being told what their kind were. Their role and their existence gave them status. This began to wane after she died but this far back it still wouldn't have been hard for them to attract the attention and open the doors of who they wished to see. I like to imagine that, whilst most people would need to be told who they are to truly understand, overall there’s this quality to them that makes their people notice them and want to listen. Something like a particular type of charisma, or a draw. You know that they’re someone special and important, and a child with large, worldly eyes would have been taken in by the old kings even if they didn’t know who they were initially. They’d feel like they knew them, would want to know them, and would believe them when they revealed their identity.

From there, they stayed. It's easier with a monarchy, slightly explored in chapter 15 of Reset, and going from one Monarch to another made their continued, unexplained existence possible. Very rarely do they experience issues with humans not believing them (COUGH Stephen). They stay about power because they can keep an ear and eye on their nation as a whole and want to be right where the historical shifts and changes are. It makes sense for them to be close to leadership to give advice, or warnings, and to maintain a key role in the goings on of their culture.

Today then, that’s where they are. Their nature itself, whilst making them memorable, also makes them forgettable. It’s strange to be around them if you don’t know what they are, and to make sure they blend in, they’re hard to notice unless they’re explicitly pointed out. People just accept that they’re there and don’t question things too much, although certain people, more perceptive than most, may spot them (like The Cleaner)

The UK bros all have titles- minor ones so they’re not questioned too much, but enough to ensure that they're not barred from anything on purely a class basis. They have several names they like to go by every generation or so and before the invention of cameras they got by quite fine like this (A key plot theme of Reset). They’re also members of the House of Commons and their own respective parliaments and float about all of it, working with those who know them and hanging about those who don’t

They don't really have an official status written down. Some younger nations so, like Canada, but they're so old and self assured in themselves and what they are they never worry about convincing someone, or proving. They just are and they're left to it. Whoever is in power knows full well who they're dealing with, unless, for whatever reason, the brothers withhold telling them

Some navelgazing thinky thoughts for the day:

Often, the theories, frameworks and lenses we use are offering us one view of a situation, problem or concept, but we treat them as though they're the One True Way Of Knowing, and I think that is a little limiting. I believe (and I suppose this is ideology) we can usually only realise a fragment of truth using a given framework. What's offered by one might be contradicted by another, and it's kind of our privilege as thinking beings to rotate the thing in our brains and look at it from different angles.

Let me offer an example that I have plucked from a conversation I had with my parent two years ago: in my country, we have 4 major banks. Together they own most of the minor financial institutions (eg., Bankwest is owned by Commbank, St George is owned by Westpac, etc etc) and they all have, just, so many shareholders in common. They are an oligopoly and unsurprisingly, moving together, they don't always serve the interests of their actual customers. They famously¹ offer such services as fucking over rural business who take out loans by altering terms without notice or consultation, intentionally charging fees to people who are dead, offering bank-affiliated "advisors," who provide advice to customers that serves the bank, etc., etc., exhausting.

One perspective says that this problem is a matter of low competition—we should slash red tape, reduce regulatory complexity and thereby offer newcomers easier access to enter the industry, which would then force these organisations to court customers or risk losing market share.

Another perspective says that this problem is that businesses are not behaving in the interests of their customers—we should increase regulation and get stronger state oversight to ensure these organisations have to do certain things regardless of their size and market share.

But depending on which lens I use (whether you are economically right or left, traditionally), both of these things may be true. Strong competition, where it exists, does force companies to do things like undercut each other's prices and offer appealing services, and high regulation is a barrier to entry to the market. Meanwhile, strong regulation also has a measurable effect on how business carry out business and what nonsense they're allowed to pull.

My answer to the problem of "what do we do about the bloody banks?" more realistically depends on a number of other factors I'm considering, like what I think the ultimate purpose of a bank should be, and how much time I think each consumer should spend becoming adequately informed, whether or not I think markets need regulating over all, and so on... But the point I'm making is, both of the above lenses are just ways of knowing about a thing (in this case, solutions to bank fuckery) and are not themselves singular unified truths. They're lenses that expose one element of truth.

I feel this way about all sorts of perspectives as I see them on my social media feed, but it's always hard to verbalise it in context. The split attraction model isn't the only (or "better") way of thinking about how relationships work. A radical queer reading of a film isn't the only way of understanding it, but it also isn't any less legitimate than, say, a subjectivist one. If you're a proponent of restorative justice, you think that perpetrators and victims need to be treated in particular ways to repair the harms of crime, but you also have to think about how labelling theory might tell you something about those categories.

Of course, it's also our privilege as thinking beings to assess the value of a lens, theory or framework.

Not all ideas are made equal. I talk about how labelling theory interacts with restorative justice, sure, but you'll notice I'm not suggesting Lombroso's biological positivism is equally valuable. That's because it's a school that is really more of a curiosity than a serious criminological theory in the 21st century. But it does still offer us an opportunity to think about how its proponents in the 19th century arrived at their framework and what fragmentary truth they felt it revealed.
