Day 5: Rabbit, Reclaim

AGJGDFJF FINALLY IT'S DAY 5 SO I CAN POST THIS

For some reason everytime i draw him he looks so young because i'm accidentally overcorrecting since i'm used to drawing older characters. So unfortunately he looks way younger than i meant him to lol, whoops.

But wait there's more- AHAHAHA

While I did initially plan this for GGY week I eventually got the idea to use this as an excuse to draw other GGY designs, soo..

(Not sure why tumblr formatted it that way with 1 of them big but it doesn't matter lol)

I've been wanting to do this for a while, I put the tags of each person next to their design but ofc I'm still gonna tag them in the post itself so you can see their art for yourself if you haven't already. But I enjoyed each of these in their own ways so if you don't mind I think I'm gonna type a bit of text next to them..

@chipistrate This was one of the first I drew out of these, the design was pretty fun to draw but sorry if I messed up a few details, it was a bit difficult lol. The mask and goggles are really fun to draw and they make for a cool design, along with all the glowing blue. (and yes, I tried to subtly include the heelies lol)

@lunzi0 This was the first fursuit one I did lol. I adore the little stars in the design, they personalize it so well and make it really unique. I wanna try this design again since I feel like the other ones show my improvement a bit better, but I hope you can appreciate the effort I put in on my first attempt <3

@carouselrabbit This one was really fun to draw, I absolutely love the eye shape/lashes, it stands out and I always love drawing eyes with a bit of eyeliner lol, the daycare theme legwarmers is a cool nod to the balloon boy arcade machine being connected to them, and was just a fun addition in general lol, I like the style of legwarmers what can I say, fnaf changed my fashion sense a bit. also the subtle paraells to freddy's design is a nice way to connect a bit to gregory himself.

@puhpandas I can't remember if I talked about this design last time I drew it but, overall I'm really happy with how this came out, it's such an indicator of improvement since I started drawing this and I'm glad I was able to draw it better than last time lol. All the patchwork and similarities to Vanny's suit work really well, and the rabbit you chose to base it off of was a good fit, the colors make it a bit more difficult to shade for but i like detail lol, hope you like it too :)

@dykevanny I knew I wanted to do this since I started but I wasn't sure if I'd have time, and I'm glad I did! I hope you don't mind I combined aspects from the first design I saw and the second one you replied to my ask with, I liked the big purple sleeves lol. (I just realized after doing all the shading I forgot to include the oil splatter on his jacket, sorry!) It was definitely a bit difficult due to the head shape being so different but.. fluffy. i love drawing fluff. And the glowing swirl on the goggles, the shape of the ears, I love a lot about this design. :D

I have a hard time with writing compliments but I wanted to get some of those thoughts out, some of the things I like about these designs apply to multiple lol. I adore every one of these designs but I find it hard to put into words what I enjoy about them, hope the original creators are happy with these. <3

I also kept the ggys without as much lighting effects on a separate file, I felt like I should add them since they're a bit brighter lol, makes them look different.

Okay now that I've gotten all that- Sorry this post is so long! I didn't think it'd end up taking up so much space lol. Buut.. working on this drawing and thinking about it and potential context behind it gave me an au idea for it, but I'll put it under the cut since I understand most people probably won't care and just wanna see the drawings lol.

Idk if I'm confident enough to write for it but I'll give a bit of a summary.. I'll keep it under the cut for people who aren't interested and just wanna see the art though lol.

After the main events of SB and Ruin, now that the mimic's been set free, Cassie's taken control of by what's left of Vanny, using her as a new host. But with Cassie being the only human left alive down there, after being reawakened, Dr. Rabbit has nowhere left to go but back to his old host.

Vanessa, Freddy, and Gregory hadn't gone back to the Pizzaplex after ruin, but they were trying to figure out a plan to get Cassie back safely. One night after Freddy and Gregory disappear, Vanessa leaves to go find them. As dangerous as the pizzaplex is, it's her best guess for where they might've gone. She doesn't want to think about what could've happened to them, in denial for the worst case scenario. She tries to keep herself calm by telling herself they probably just left to go back for Cassie, maybe they didn't want her stopping them.. but deep down she knows it can't be that simple. She knows something's off, even if she's not ready to admit it.

When returning to the pizzaplex, she brought along her own V.A.N.N.I. mask, though unlike the one Cassie used, it was clear of the mimic's influence. After all, she was going to need some way to travel through potential blocked routes.

By the time she found Gregory, she'd still been wearing the mask, seeing him down the end of a dark hallway. He looked confused, afraid, his mind was a wreck of conflicting emotions. She started rushing towards him, happy to see him okay, until he finally spoke.

"You need to get out of here."

She stepped back, taking off the mask, only to be faced with the worst case scenario.

It was a wreck, covered in stains and tears, but it was still recognizable. He was wearing that old suit again.

As he waved, she could see Freddy's claws peeking out from the doorway, as the two stepped closer towards her.

So, she did what he told her to do, and started running. She could hear a faint voice coming from the mask, and put it back on before finding somewhere she could hide.

It was his voice again, telling her which way to go.

I guess that was the dramatic way to summarize the main idea behind it, lol. Basically Gregory and Dr. Rabbit work the way Sun and Moon work in Ruin, whichever one is in control in the real world, the other is left behind in the AR world. Or at least that's my interpretation of how they worked, considering Sun was always in mask-on scenes and moon was mask-off. I'm not too sure where the plot might go from there, and maybe I'll consider writing for it, I dunno. I've never wrote fanfic before because I get deadly afraid of writing them out of character lol, but maybe?? I have ideas for scenes and premise and stuff but I don't know if I have the confidence to write it.

But anyway! That was just more of a fun side-idea I came up with while working on this, if you read this far thanks, hope you enjoyed :)

I do honestly believe the Emperor is indeed in a "Ai who thinks it's al person" scenario. Like, I think he genuinely believes he was the adventurer. But he is a mindflayer first and his mindflayer nature overpowers his own. This is the reason why he wants us to evolve. I think he genuinely grows interest the MC. This is why he wants us to evolve. He both wants us to become his thrall but also become his equal in my personal opinion. When we evolve he or accept it he does say we are beautiful and perfect. Because he, like any mindflayer believes himself superior for being such a creature.

Though I am sad there's no Orpheus survives and the Emperor sides with us ending. But it does make sense the Emeperor like all mindflayers will do what it must to survive and evolve, including betray us and align with the brain if he believes this to be his biggest chance of survival.

If we read the books on mindflayers, time and time again, that alliances with mindflayers last as long as they have something to gain from it. Our use, both 'emotional' and professional to them ends when we stop being useful.

Are my MCs aware of this?

Is Khalil expecting the Emperor to pull the plug the moment he stops being useful. He's deadly aware of this. The guy's named "emperor". No "emperor" in the story of ever, ever been good.

A) Khalil is a pretty reasonable guy and so far the Emperor has had a good point.

Okay devil's tango made me laugh XD I do have some trouble seeing Fushimi doing something like this, since he'd be once again knowingly hurting Yata, but maybe looking at this less like Yata not being able to satisfy Fushimi and more Fushimi attempting to subconsciously sabotage his own relationship because he still thinks it's going to collapse anyway. Also maybe relating this to one of those asks I had in the past about attachment disorders, imagine Fushimi with more of a fearful-avoidant attachment disorder and so in this AU rather than avoiding touching strangers at all costs Fushimi's had a lot of sexual partners as just flings, basically his way of searching for affection while also rejecting anything with permanency since he assumes it won't last. Post-ROK Yata confesses his feelings to Fushimi and Fushimi accepts them but at the same time he's still dealing with all the old fears and doing his best to keep those from Yata, like he's simultaneously in love with Yata and terrified of Yata leaving him but at the same time he still can't bring himself to think this will last either.

When they start sleeping together Yata is of course a total virgin but say he's completely unaware that Fushimi is not, just assuming that the Fushimi who always hated being close to anyone certainly wouldn't be sleeping with other people while they were apart. Really though Fushimi's had multiple partners and he's pretty well aware that Yata is not, ah, well-endowed and also doesn't particularly know how to use it either, leaving Fushimi unsatisfied entirely. Fushimi doesn't say as much but it starts eating at him, like maybe assuming this is another sign they aren't compatible and he never should have let things get this serious. Assuming this is also Everybody Lives AU imagine this is when he ends up going to Mikoto, who has no idea that Yata and Fushimi are dating (because I think he'd absolutely refuse if he knew Yata and Fushimi were together). Even during the betrayal years Fushimi's had something of an 'not-quite-enemies-not-quite-friends with benefits' thing going on, like imagine Fushimi getting into some trouble at a bar once when he was trying to pick up a partner for the night, almost having his drink spiked or something, and Mikoto happened to be there and helped him. This spiraled into sort of a thing that Fushimi claims to hate but never actually did, and it's far too easy to go back into old habits (and maybe part of Fushimi is vindictively excited about this, cheating on Misaki with the same person he still feels like Yata 'replaced' him with). Mikoto isn't thrilled about the whole thing at all because I think he'd at least have some idea that if Fushimi's here wanting to sleep with him again there may be some emotional things going on but he also figures better him than Fushimi going to a random bar again.

Eventually Yata would have to find out about this and of course he'd be heartbroken (and Mikoto I think would be fairly pissed at Fushimi for not being honest with him, I could see him basically telling Fushimi to deal with his own problems and not draw other people into it, and that would be the end of things between them). Fushimi would just take Yata's betrayed look and part of him feels excited by it even as the rest of him is disgusted with himself, like I could see him in some twisted way thinking see Misaki this is how it feels when someone throws you away. But at the same time he knows he's just broken the best thing he ever had because even now he still can't bring himself to believe in anything permanent and isn't it for the best anyway, that Misaki won't be tied down to him anymore. I think it would be hard but not impossible for them to reconcile from this but Fushimi in particular would need some therapy or something, like he needs to face that he's purposefully hurting Yata and that he's allowed to have permanent things, he's allowed to be happy, and come to terms with the fact that what he really wants is for Misaki to stay by his side. Yata being more the hurt party in this situation I think more would have to try and understand why Fushimi's doing this, like to him at first it's unforgivable but when they finally talk and he starts to realize how afraid Fushimi is of everything to do with real intimacy and relationships he at least starts to realize what the reasons behind all this was and it gives him an outlet to forgive Fushimi if only Fushimi will ask him to.

✨ COLORING GIFS FOR RAINBOW SETS ✨

hello!! so this ask had just been sitting in my inbox for days, and since i finally got some free time (and an incentive) i thought i’d put together a general coloring tutorial - especially for those who are interested in rainbow sets, or just want to get freaky with their gifs, hehe.

photoshop: cc 2021, but tbh this tutorial is compatible with most versions of photoshop for: beginners / anyone with a basic understanding of adjustment layers and brush tool (optional)

the tutorial will show how you can: (1) enhance colors in a neutral/washed out scene (2) change the overall color of a shot (3) make the colors bolder/stronger (4) convert the dominant color to another color

in other words: i rarely save my psds so this is what we’re stuck with

usually, when i’m making a color set, the first thing i do is open the hues/saturation layer and pull the saturation to a 100. this gives me a pretty good idea of the colour palette i can work with. and since this shot is more on the dark side, i brightened the gif a bit, and then moved saturation to a 100. this is what i get:

now that i know the dominant colour is yellow, i can drag the saturation back to 0 and start working on the actual coloring! i go to curves, and brighten the gif a little. most of the time, the white and black points (the first and the third inkdropper) does wonders in color correcting your gif. buut, marking the white point of for this gif would remove what little yellow we have, so i just did a manual adjustment until i was happy with the result.

(since he’s a poc, i used a brush tool at 35% capacity over his face on the curves layer mask. it’s soft, and barely noticeable, but it stopped him from looking lighter, which would become a problem once we move on to the vibrance layers. basically, the lighter the subject, the more susceptible it is to being affected by color enhancing layers.)

next, i go to the yellow hue/saturation option, and increase yellow saturation to 50. i usually don’t do this much, but the yellows are very very light in this scene, so we’re enhancing the colors wherever we can. i also lowered the intensity of the reds using these settings:

the reason i’m reducing red saturation is because - remember the dominant color on his face was red/yellow? - i don’t want my vibrance layers to end up reddening his skin too much. we already tackled a portion of this when we used the brush tool with curves, but this just ensures that the final product doesn’t have his skin looking too yellowy/funny, hehe. this is my gif after the saturation settings:

honestly, the difference is minimal, but now we have an actual color to work with. now it’s just a matter of enhancing that color. at this point, his skin may also look washed out, but the color will return once we get started with the vibrance/color layers.

now, i open the vibrance layer, and - this is always dependent on the gif, btw - drag the sliders around until the colors are bolder. this is my gif now:

the yellows are much more evident now, and there’s a bit more color in his face - so yay! at this stage there’s really no need for selective coloring - so i’ll just add a brightness layer and another vibrance layer:

and voila!! mans lookin good

changing the overall color of the gif is a fairly easy process. i think one thing to look out for is if there are people/a lot of skin that would end up being affected by the coloring – unless there’s minimal movement that you can use a brush tool for.

loki is more or less a silhouette in this shot, and all i’d need to do would be increase the contrast between him and the fog, and slap on a color. this can be done one of three ways: selective coloring, color balance, and gradient map. i’ll be using selective coloring here because i felt that worked best and it’s also an adjustment layer i’m most comfortable with.

enhancing the contrast comes first, and since the brightness/contrast layer didn’t work as well as i’d hoped, i opened up the exposure layer and put in these settings:

and i get this:

now that loki is much more prominent against the fog, we can move on to the coloring. since i want it to be pink, i’m gonna open the neutral selective coloring, and use these settings:

just make sure your selective coloring is on “absolute” because it colors your gif independent of the original gif and makes your colors more strong, whereas ‘relative’ colors your gif relative to the original gif – which doesn’t work all that well for color sets. (read: makes it look ugly)

i got the color, but methinks its still a little too dull, so i’ll add a brightness/contrast layer to make the color pop

and done!!

animation gifs are much more easier to color because the colours are easily isolated, which is just chefs kiss when you use selective coloring. for this one, i just want to enhance the blues / reds, and remove the magenta tone so that the colours are more vivid. first, i increase the contrast:

it’s sharpened the colors a bit, and reduced the dullness:

now, because i want to enhance the blues/reds, and reduce the magenta, i’m going to use these settings in my selective coloring layer:

i didn’t want to make the red too bright, since red has an annoying tendency to pixelate, and lowered the magentas just enough so that the three of them still have a bit of color on their face. now the blues:

now that that’s done, all we need is to brighten up the gif. i’ll use curves for this:

i selected my white point (the white inkdropper) from the white part on baymax’s face (which i just realized makes no sense bc his entire face is white) which immediately brightened up the gif and erased the excess magenta.

if you want, you could still make it brighter by selecting your white point a little towards the shadows in baymax’s face - but methinks this gif looks fine by itself ehehe

this one will be fairly easy - especially for a shot like this where it’s just blues and black - and will only require selective color and some brightness layers. so, i want to make this a violet gif. the very first thing i’ll do is open up selective coloring and enhance the blues:

idk if this is a thing others do djsajskl i feel like they do, but i do this because i’ve always found it easier to do color convert when the colors are enhanced - so, the more enhanced my blues are, the easier it is to convert to violet. this is what i have now:

now it’s time for violet!!! yee!!!

i increased the magenta in the whites because the highlights in the cloud were looking VERY white, and would end up looking very weird once i increased brightness. so this is just for…. consistency

now we can get on with brightening!! i open up the brightness/contrast layer and use these settings:

and another curves layer, where i’ve intense-ified the dark parts (the grey slider is at input: 27) and lightened the rest (the white slider is at input: 220)

(i just feel like it makes the coloring look crispy)

and tada!!!

-OK OK HEAR ME OUT .

-you weren't originally an aahw project. while they're definitely the biggest company of sorts around there's still a few others that are like them but not exactly them hanging around nevada. you happened to be in some facility they decided to raid due to them having some possibly useful information regarding the anti-aahw . she's definitely a little less than enthused to get a call from her agents that she should come check this out but ,, when she lays her eyes on u that immediately melts away

-he's VERY very curious about you. keeps you close which is kind of nice bc it means you're treated pretty well but also it means a lot of being watched. audi just has like. a habit of unconsciously ''''''''studying'''''''' you. they're always noting little behaviors of yours down mentally and asking you little questions abut how you came to be and what abilities you hold.

-believe it or not he actually DOESN'T want you in fights. she knows you're incredibly capable but the thought of you getting too involved in a bunch of clawing and tearing again makes her get uneasy. she just prefers for you to stay by her side, with the excuse that you're a body guard of sorts for her (you aren't, she's got several other, more disposable mags that serve that role just fine.).

-HOWEVER. there is one time where he doesn't get an option in that. a few contractees and dissenters attempted a raid on the base audi was at, hoping to try and get some sort of bargaining chip to make deal with. before they can even really attempt to try and land some sort of hit on them you're already pouncing on the nearest grunt, blood already spurting and painting the walls red in mere seconds of your arrival. it honest to god shocks her into stillness, her just watching motionlessly the entire time, only really moving once to dodge some limb you'd mindlessly thrown her way after tearing it from its socket. WHILE SHE IS IMPRESSED ,,, she still scolds you a little for being reckless while trying to scrub the blood off of you with a wet rag, huffing that 'you could've gotten seriously hurt' if you were any less careful >:/

-however he does do the thng where he like. cups both sides of your face and then presses his forehead against yours. you have to lean down a lot for him to do so but still. sighs a little while brushing his thumb under your eyes and tells you to be more careful from now on.

-auditor is not immune to favoritism and it shows. someone brings it up (shakily, of course) and she just shrugs and goes 'idk what you're talking abt' while petting you who's got your head on her lap. said person promptly gets 'dismissed' after.

-hates whenever anyone tries to put some kind of muzzle on you, even if its just for the jaw dislocation thingy it still makes him go kind of '>:|' . he'll let them for like. a day at MOST (unless you keep trying to get it off, then chances are he's just gonna take it off for you. nobody really bothers asking / trying to get it back on you bc he just sends them a sharp little glare before they even can. if you REALLY need it that bad then he might try and convince you to keep it on a little longer or otherwise take your mind of it, he still feels really bad about it tho . )

-you two knew each other before he dissented / you became a mag. worked pretty close together and were just close in general !! you didn't know dei super super well since he worked in a different area but you two met a few times and hit it off pretty well.

-anyway ! he doesn't take your magnification well. at all. the first few times he saw you after it were the worst, mostly because those few times were primarily because you were lashing out at agents for one reason or another (mostly maltreatment from guards / people being shitty in general) . for the first while its so obvious that you're just exhausted from what's happened to your body that was NOT meant to become this, that you're tired and on edge from not being allowed any real rest. it makes him feel fucking terrible to see how awful of a state you're in and know that there's next to nothing he can really do to help.

-it especially hits him when he notices the other little changes. there's some specific moment where he's holding onto you far too tightly, clutching at the back of your jacket while he does his best to keep composed. you always had this habit of giving a half jokey hum of some stupid little joke or even just a 'what's wrong, big guy?' whenever he seemed off or tense, he can't help but make note of the lack of real response from you in the moment other than you wrapping your arms around him as well. another time, maybe he tries to make some little inside joke after something reminded him of it, looking back at you with a little smile. it hits him with a special punch to the gut when he notices your confusion, you just can't recognize it. you don't remember it anymore. you don't remember a lot of your old self or interactions anymore.

-you two end up getting split up at one point or another. orginally, he'd planned to run away with you and deimos buut,,, one way or another, you weren't really able to get out. he goes looking for you a bunch but eventually he has to stop when it gets to be too much and he can't find any real sign of you, he's quiet for a long time after it.

-HOWEVER . he does eventually find you in some abandoned warehouse him and the others had planned to look for supplies in. the entire time he's in there he keeps hearing sounds he thinks are just dei or hank but every time he asks or comments on it they just give him a look of confusion or a little 'what are you talking about?' it puts him really on edge, it's worse when he's in one of the further corners, digging through a few boxes and desperately trying to ignore how much it feels like someones there. anyway umm lol its just you ,,,, ehe . it takes him a solid minute to process that its you but as soon as it clicks he's yelling your name and running up to hug you. doesn't even stop to think that you could totally tear him a new one right then and there he's just too happy to see you. dei and hank both come rushing over after hearing him, dei recognizes you too and is just kinda 'oh hey !! friend !! :D' while hank stands there and just kinda stares.

-is able to take you back to base without too much argument from the others. he does his best to fill you in on everything that's happened in hopes you'll explained what happened on your part too. even if you don't he can't be too upset since he's just too gd happy to see you again ,,,, chances are you stick around him a lot . deimos is nice but u don't remember him super well and hank makes you uneasy lmao . its ok he thinks its funny though, just laughs a little whenever you stand in his doorway in silence until he notices you :)

Aight so here’s my excuse of a post to ramble about my AU’s (wish I had art to show em but I lost their refs that also look like they were drawn on a microwave)

Radiation

His AU is a version of the normal Undertale story where the Mountain they were stuck under had a nuclear reactor near it. The nuclear reactor had a meltdown a few days after monsters were sealed underground (unknown wether it was sabotage or coincidence) and since then the underground has been highly radioactive. However, monsterkind evolved to use radiation as their magic. Their attacks and abilities are all radiation based.

Radiation is pretty much just a very chill happy guy. I’d say…like dream, but minus all the trauma. He’s literally just happy to be alive, happy to meet people, anything really. He slightly glows due to him always slightly emitting radiation. It’s not an amount that can be dangerous to others but he’s still a little cautious of it. His attack include general bone attacks (that also glow and are radioactive), and gaster blasters that shoot beams of- well you guessed it, radiation. Also, He can eat radioactive metals like plutonium and potassium n stuff, and if he does he ‘explodes’ . Aka: he emits blindly bright light and much more radiation than normal for the next few minutes, then gets like a sugar rush afterwards.

He’s essentially the glue keeping the friend group together.

Puppet-master

In his AU…well every single monster has been killed and turned into an undead puppet that are all hiveminded. Puppet did that because he genuinely thinks he did the right thing! I mean, he solved conflict, made it easier for people to cooperate on projects, nobody can ever ‘not see eye to eye’, so he did a good thing, right? Yeah he’s not entirely there mentally- if he ever tries to convince you to join ‘his peace’, don’t- The hiveminded puppets pretty much walk around the underground like zombie guards, and if they find someone who hasn’t been turned, literally all of them will start making their way over to try capture them and take them to Puppet-Master. He could also mind control them if he wanted something specific done, or could just see through their eyes like security cams. Whenever he’s doing either of those, the puppet he’s controllings eyes will light up pale blue.

He’s way too overly happy- like, psycho levels happy. Not to say he’s mean! He’s literally a short crazy cuddly little man who loves stitching. Man he loves cuddles- he’s the kind of person to be walking with someone but get so over exited he just starts randomly jumping. He literally just cannot contain himself- his favourite friend is Radiation, mainly cause they’re the one closest to their energy level.

Puppets attacks are- well- obviously his entire mind controlled army- but also a giant Sewing needle made of purple magic (kinda the same like undynes spears). Tbh, the idea of the needle when I made it was that ‘it hurts you mentally, not physically’. If you’re stabbed with the needle, you won’t actually be hurt, but you’ll be sent into a trance where you have to relive your worst memories over and over. Not only that, but Puppet can see those memories, and use them to his advantage in a fight. Buut he’s actually only used this once- even he feels the ability is too mean. (Nightmare would probably fukin love it tho-)

Wings

Ohhh boy this is the one I spent ages milling over cause I made them as an over dramatic protagonist for a daydream but ended up falling in love with em-

So basically- not gonna go much detail on their home AU but a disease that caused random painful wing like growths pretty much ripped their au apart and Wings was the only survivor , not without injury though. They have one wing in their left eye socket, one wing on the right of their back, and two small wings in the palms of their hands. The wings also tore their soul in half, so they have only half a soul.

They ended up falling into a separate layer of reality that was a blank void (not the anti void tho-). They spent so long there alone that they pretty much forgot how to emotion. Yeah, they could still rarely feel emotions with their half a soul, but they completely forgot what emotion feels which way, when they should come around, what they mean- basically forgot everything emotion wise.

But anyway- turns out this separate layer of reality- whenever a character goes through a drastic change to their personality, something that may make you say “they’re not the same person”, their old self gets sent to Wings au. And Wings kinda just…became their guardian. Although they also don’t want the people to know about their soul- so they spend a lot of time basically secretly studying the other people-

They’ll record in their notebook how people act when they say they’re feeling a certain emotion, and write themself scripts pretty much on how to act that emotion. They’ve pretty much scripted their entire personality by now, and it’s pretty hard to tell if you didn’t know! They still have gaps though, like if something unexpected happens they will struggle for a moment, their pupil turning white for a second while they try figure out how to react. Or that they don’t fully understand most emotions, like they don’t get that you can cry from emotions other than sadness. Still, they’re accidentally over protective of the people in their universe though.

It the friend group they kinda take the role of the responsible one. Always looking out for the others, get tired of their antics. They’re just the chill semi sad guy in the group. Also they’re tall as fuck- literally lanky ass dude. They’re kinda sad, give em a hug.

For their attacks, they only have bone attacks, but wherever they strike, wings grow like the ones on Wings. They try their absolute hardest to not use this attack because the wings are permanent and painful as all hell, and they don’t wish that on anyone. It’s an absolute last resort. Other than that they’re unusually agile.

Doubt

Don’t have much on this guy yet really.

His AU is basically classic, exept the human never showed up. Supplies started to run out in the underground and monsterkind went on a crash course to extinction. What few people are left are absolutely miserable because they know that if a human even did show up now, they wouldn’t be able to fight it and monsters would still go extinct. Doubt himself should have dusted a long time ago, but he’s still living on a slight bit of determination to not die, and one day see the surface. The moment that’s gone, or he uses too much magic, he’s gone, and that scares him every day.

Among the friend group he’s…kinda the cautious skeptic. And also the miserable one that everyone needs to come together to help cheer up. Even though they will have given him food and anything he needs to recover from his weak state, he wouldn’t actually really be able to get any better. He can only use Bone attacks. The amount of magic needed to summon a gaster blaster would literally kill him. He really really needs a hug I want to hug this man- oh he’s also quite tall. And very skinny- cause ya know, no food in his au. (Don’t ask how a skeleton gets skinny cause I don’t know)

Oh- yeah. Kinda ship him with Radiation- even if it’s not the ship, Radiation is kinda the most considerate of all the people in the squad, so he goes out of his way to try and make sure Doubt is fine because Radiation is also worried about how easy it is for doubt to die. And of course having a bf (that can either be best friend of boy friend) kinda gives Doubt more reason to want to stay alive, and would probably give him a little more determination to stay alive.

And lastly

Void

There was a glitch in some code somewhere and he came from that. Because of the nature of his creation he’s kinda- missing a soul. Not in the same way as being soulless and emotionless, he still has emotions it’s just like- a bug in his code that his souls missing. And pretty much, until he finds a soul for himself, his code will essentially destroy itself, causing him to stop existing bit by bit. He’s already lost his physical body. You can see him but can’t touch him, kinda like a ghost.

He actually struck a deal with Wings! Wings agreed to give Void their soul…but then Wings decided to play cat and mouse with it. Wings doesn’t actually intend to give Void their soul, they just kinda said yes and thought nothing of it. So now void is in a bit of a panic begging anyone to give him their soul and constantly begging Wings for their soul because he doesn’t wanna stop existing.

Void isn’t actually part of the squad but he hangs out with wings sometimes so hey. He’s kinda smug, sarcastic, he’s friendly though. He’s constantly slightly stressed though cause he could stop existing at literally any moment-

Also he and Wings have this thing where they will constantly flirt with each other, but aren’t actually interested in each other. It’s just like a form of conversation to them.

Oh- and he has no attacks.

Ended up taking all the spare pills I had in my bag. I took 200 before I left for the uh "looseness" effect of it. Which worked pretty well. Talking and joking around wasn't too too hard. But the extra 450 I took throughout the event was purely for the high. Not even gonna front

I got to drink a bit with my uh god grandma. Originally I was popping more to heighten the diluted ass liquor but after a while I just gave up on drinking snd just popped em as I thought about it. I don't get why I don't ever get that much of an effect from alcohol actually. Maybe I do but with me being used to being fucked off dph I don't notice the effects as much. Or cause the adults seem to like light light buzzes over being drunk so it wasn't that strong anyway. Tho.. I don't really drink so I'd figure I'd be an ultra lightweight. I dunno lol

It was nice to see everyone after all this time. It's kinda odd to see some of em for the first time in like.. 10 years? Something like that. I don't see my mom's side of the family often at all so my mental image of them versus what they actually look like now was a little off. Twas good to get an updated look you know?

Tho since I'm not really close with them they were bringing up my old uni not knowing I dropped out like half a year ago now. It made me feel like shit ngl. If I didn't come there with someone I would've either dipped early to cry or just run away in general. I just like.. I dunno. I know if they knew me and everything going on they'd see me as a fucking loser and I can't even blame them. I feel so gross just thinking about all that.

Stressing my god grandma out was the only reason I didn't. She was my ride so me not coming back would make her go nuts tryna find me/feel like shit for not keeping an eye on me. I didn't want to put that on her. So I ended up just taking dose after dose tryna make it harder to think.

Only semi worked as for one, I was only taking 100/150 extra at a time and while I did the majority of that before like 3-4ish it was still semi spaced out + around other people mode kicked in kicked in which made me subconsciously hide and brush off the high anyway. Actually the only one that semi fucked me up was the final 100 I had left that I took around 7. I was already teary-eyed thinking about what R said and I just had multiple family members chatting about my college shit. I would've just cried and taken extra care to wipe my eyes frequently buut I didn't trust myself to do it without getting too caught up and sobbing so I took the 100 as a distraction. It worked out pretty alr I was able to not cry at all and we dipped soon after

As for now I just woke back up from a nap. I wasn't really that tired but the high from all the pills was still there so I just went to sleep instead of building onto it. I think I was sleep for a good 4 hours so it was lowkey a full night's rest. Probably won't be going back to bed for a while..

Plus, lowkey feel like I'm gonna puke. My stomach started to burn again and I'm sure it's from the alcohol-benadryl concoction it had to put up with today. I figure I might as well let that settle first as to not puke it up and waste more pills

I don't know what I want to do anymore. On one hand I know I'm going to have to cry and beg my mom to let me borrow money from her. I don't want to but I know if I let that uni debt shit fester they'd be pissed once they found out. It's gonna be hard to cry in front of her. I know if I asked in my normal/casual tone she'd look at me worse though. I'll have to figure that out. Past that, I don't know what'll be my next move. All I want to do is od on this shit and finally be free. Tho, ig that's a bit dire. I think everyone would be mad at me throwing in the towel this early on. But it's all I want atp. I'm tired of feeling like this and I don't care enough to make some miraculous comeback. I'm over it atp

ahhh okok— i have to say, i am team suho for ju kyung, buut that doesn’t stop me from absolutely adoring seojun ( i like to say that he is for the viewers ). i actually prefer the show over the comic! i feel like it stays more true to its original theme and the overall development in the story is *chef’s kiss*

nonetheless, the comic still holds a place in my heart as it is just so fun despite its flaws and its so easy to be drawn in. my quarrel with it tho is it just drags on so long 😭 ( doesn’t stop me from reading it tho as im too far into the hole lol )

nixie, all of your opinions are so valid!!!!!!!! i am team suho in the comic (the way his growth is sO. IMPORTANT TO ME), but for the show i'm team seojun despite knowing how it's all going to end, and for sO! MANY! REASONS! (which you know i'm going to get into under the cut,,,,) i mean,,, how can you not be team seojun when he’s doing that!!!!! when he’s singing that!!!!!!!! when he’s looking at jugyeong like that!!!!!!!

and yes, i agree that the show handles a lot of the overarching themes better (esp. the like,,,, bullying, and the antagonism between suho and seojun over seyeon, etc.) and i think it's in a large part due to the fact that the story is more strapped for time, and so they're forced to bring up Important Plot Points sooner than in the comic. the show also benefits from a lot of Knowledge in that, at times, the comic adds flashbacks that come out of left field with little ceremony or buildup. The show, however, is pretty up to date with character backgrounds, and so they're able to flesh out characters a little more maturely, often with that backstory in mind. i also think the show worked wonders when it brought in additional characters like jugyeong's dad (!!!!!! he was sorely missing from the comic and his every appearance brings me joy.), as well as amalgamated 2+ characters into one for ease of storytelling - yoo tae-hoon as both lee taehoon and aiden kim my beloved <3, sujin as both sujin and chaerin my heart <3.

and omg,,,,,,, the length of the comic,,,,,,,,, i have too many thoughts, so they're all going under the cut:

TLDR; as it pertains to the comic, the overall narrative of true beauty suffers because jugyeong is a poor choice for the main pov protagonist. she suffers from a perfectionist lens where consequences for her actions are never realized, and her arc is stagnant throughout the majority of the story as it has a simple resolution with no confounding choices or missteps.

as it pertains to the show, hindsight and a shift in the narrative structure was able to create a more dramatic, more concise storyline that makes for a more invested viewing.

okay.

so, to begin, i think the comic drags for one primary reason, and it's not the insane number of installments (although that is deserving of recognition as well, asdfghgf). the #1 most damning thing about true beauty is that, im ways more than one, jugyeong is a terrible protagonist.

now, i don't mean she's a bad character - she definitely has something special going on in that she was bullied mercilessly and still chooses to see the good in people rather than the bad, and her whole "i have a secret that no one can know about and i will go to any lengths to keep it that way" is fun and interesting to engage with! ..... but as a side quest. the problem with jugeyong as a protagonist is that she's far too squeaky clean. her big lesson from this comic is to learn to love herself - bare face and all - so that she can accept the love of others sans doubt. that's a fine lesson in and of itself to learn, but the problem is that it's a little too straightforward, and it's a little too easy - especially for the slowburn, 200(+) episode format. there's just not enough there to be substantial, and the author isn't keen on making jugyeong's story any more complicated than it has to be.

i mean, the biggest stakes after suho and seojun make up (which we will talk about in good time) is "when will seojun see jugyeong's bare face?" and that is just an eventuality. there's a bit of mystery in how he will react, but there's only one right answer in the eyes of many viewers, and so jugyeong's main theme and main storyline is without real investment.

and the author clearly knows this, because she continues to tack on dramatic subplots, which are all plausible, but hinge a lot on jugyeong being naive or pleasing, and not learning the lesson from the last time she was victimized. the only way to bring investment is to create these elaborate plots, where everyone is bashing their heads into the wall, asking "jugyeong wHY?" and tuning in to see if she finally gets the hint this time.

and so, the comic version of true beauty suffers a lot, because we can't have progression in jugyeong's thematic storyline without the story being finished, and yet the author doesn't allow jugyeong to regress in her plotline or make morally dubious left turns, in order for progress to then be made.

and i want to touch real quick (real quick, i say, as though any of this is concise) on what i mean by allowing jugyeong to regress or make a hard left. jugyeong has this secret that she desperately wants to keep... and yet the story never backs her into a desperate corner where she has to make dicey and consequential decisions to keep it.

whenever there's going to be consequences for jugyeong deceiving people, or not trusting those she's in a relationship with due to her insecurities, those get swept under the rug in the face of acceptance........ and they never stew or come back to cause problems.

in the jugyeong/seojun breakup, there is no room to think about or address the way that jugyeong not trusting seojun damaged their relationship, or the way that jugyeong avoiding situations to keep up the ruse led to some of their downfall. because of the framing of the story, the fault lies entirely with seojuns new career (and, incidentally, his reasons for needing this career are never brought up to jugyeong - or, at least, she never considers them).

this plot armor to protect jugyeong goes as far as the time skip - which exists almost exclusively to show that jugyeong had time to ~mourn the loss of suho~ before she fell in love with seojun. timeskips in a show are used to jumble character arcs and change the status quo - there's supposed to be new mysteries and marked changes to characters. if you think about it, the true beauty time skip..... really didn't deliver any of that. we got (1) suho going radio silent, (2) seojun having to provide more financially for his family, and maaaaybe (3) jugyeong and seojun spending more time together. nothing else really changes! and arguably, those three things did not require a timeskip to address.

imagine the conflict, if jugyeong were to move on from suho to seojun faster. if readers were to see her moving on, and think "??? jugyeong... isn't that a little fast???" and her entire narrative being "no way! i've always liked seojun, and he's present, and he's here, and he's willing to love me as i am - or, at least, the version of me that he knows." already, we have so much more conflict! the layers of jugyeong's deception! she's taken a hard left! she's regressed a bit! now we have a more compelling way to push the story forward - they both have increased guilt over the situation, jugyeong's deception will amount to something when they're aired, and tension will ensue!

jugyeong severely lacks from a perfectionist lens wherein she does nothing unambiguously wrong, and her ambiguous choices are reframed so they're out of the picture, when conflict arises.

which brings me back to my original point, being that the comic drags because it has no interesting narrator.

if you've read this far, you're already humoring me, so just imagine real quick how interesting it would have been if our main narrators were suho and seojun.

because they both have such strong feelings about each other, and all that happened with seyeon, they would both be a little unreliable in their storytelling at the beginning. suho would start the story, ofc, and instead of it beginning with jugyeong's bullying, it begins with the duality of the girl at the comic shop and the girl at school. suho learns about her double life, and then the reason for such grand deception can be a bit of a mystery - lightly hinted at, as always, but the true form of it never learned until jugyeong and suho are much closer. and then, you have the added mystery of suho and his father's distance, whatever happened to seyeon - that boy people only mutter about when suho is around - which would be a very slow burn mystery with lots of tension, and finally, whatever the hell is going on between seojun and suho.

and!!!!!! when it's finally seojuns turn to be introduced into the story, he can become a narrator as well. perhaps, at the end of some of the earlier episodes, there were hints at who this character is - for the last few panels of some installments, there's this other mystery narrator who has the same pictures as suho but seems to have a very different life. when we finally get in deep with his pov, we see suho as this callous young man rather than this awkward, lonely boy. the duality of their pov's could be so interesting!!!!

then, because true beauty makes a habit of having one or two episodes being in another character's pov entirely, we get the occasional pov of jugyeong where we can really highlight the mistreatment she faces, and how she's good, despite.

and hey! if we want to keep the time skip in, shift pov's then, to it primarily being jugyeong's story. or the other way around! keep jugyeong's pov in the beginning, but introduce suho and seojun's narration at the time skip.

a shift in pov would be great justification for a timeskip, and i'd be behind it, then.

i think the story of true beauty works great, but it would be elevated if it focused more on interpersonal drama, the messiness that comes when insecurities intersect with love, the way that one's past influences then, and how people can still become friends and mend broken ties, if they approach a situation with acceptance and forgiveness.

which brings me to the show. (preface saying that i’m only 10 minutes into episode 10)

the show flows better than the comic for many reasons, but here are the most important three, imo.

the stakes are higher than in the comic. not only is there more physical fighting and aggression, but the bullying jugyeong faces is more imminent and raw, - as there’s the rooftop scene, as she transferred rather than age into high school, and as her bullies come out of the woodwork again and again. in the show, it’s fine that jugyeong drags a bit with her arc because the conflict is more present, the story is more concise, and the story (thus far) has taken place entirely in high school, where drama is Heightened in a way it functionally isn’t in adulthood. all these characters are stuck together in the same space for the majority of the day, so of course jugyeong’s secret is a more imminent threat.

the show slowly develops the lives of side characters. this goes back to my (much) earlier comment about the show having Knowledge of who the characters are. in the comic, the backstories of other characters are revealed in a sort of hit-and-run manner, the way that backstories are often presented to real people in real life. we know nothing of sujin’s past, and then, in an episode that’s well into the 150 mark, we suddenly learn that sujin was childhood friends with suho before they had a falling out, that she was a harp protege, and that she has many parallels to jugyeong as well. the same happened with suho and seojun. suddenly, we’re introduced to facets of their character that were simply Not Present before. with some of the characters, there was foreshadowing and mystery. with many, there were not. the show fixes this by slowly fleshing out these characters, rather than doing a drive by at the end of their arc. we also have the inclusion of juyoung having a crush on gowoon, jugyeong’s parents, the heegyeong/joonwoo relationship, and the tae-hoon/suho friendship which puts emphasis on other characters besides jugyeong.

suho’s growth is exponentially slowed down. now, don’t get me wrong - i hate this aspect of the show with my dying breath - but, credit where credit is due, slowing down suho’s character development does wonders for the slow burn of jugyeong’s plotline. now that jugyeong is not alone in being the only character who hasn’t grown, her slowness is seen less as a flaw of the story and more of a fatal character flaw. suho is a markedly reserved character. it makes sense, then, that his growth would be slow and painful. the problem in the comic therein laid when suho surpassed jugyeong in growth. by all accounts, jugyeong should grow faster and easier than suho, because she’s more open to it (and because she’s a main character with relatively few flaws but like,,,,, we already know that) when, in the comic, she grows slower than suho, it’s clearly a flaw of the writing. in the show, jugyeong is still not growing any faster than her comic counterpart, but suho is growing slower (much to my chagrin), and so jugyeong’s arc is strengthened by proxy. of course, slowing suho’s growth feeds into problems all of their own (literally seojun is doing the MOST in this show and it’s a shame he's being overlooked for suho, who can’t even be kind for an extended period of time), but at least it makes the main character more bearable to handle.

the show, due to its concise nature, and the power of hindsight, is able to create a more fulfilling story than the comic, as it’s not spread so thin, and it can fix a lot of the structural problems of the comic.

however, as i’ve already mentioned, it degrades suhos arc by slowing the pacing and painfully dragging him along, while seojuns arc is walking briskly by his side and shining in the sun. seojun is such a compelling character in the show as he recognizes his feelings sooner, acts on them with the same pace, has still yet to resolve his conflict with suho leading to maximum angst, and still manages to be the More Present love interest in a story where suho is not yet Gone. despite the fact that the show has a clear endgame ship, and seojun is the second love interest, there’s more stakes and intrigue in the story, due to its structure and pacing.

(it’s also arguably a stronger “which one?” ship war, as they’re both actively and genuinely vying for the same girl at the same time. in the comic there’s a lot of “you just missed the conflict! she was with seojun two episodes ago, and only now are you, suho, actively pursuing jugyeong!” like,,,, for realistic relationships, it’s better that they have a swell in one relationship just as the other whimpers, but for the drama and enjoyment of audiences, a more active ship war can lead to more engagement.)
