In which Sirius finds his new home

A short excerpt in Shameless Self-Promotion™ of Stardust and Spiders: Year 1, my first-year Marauders fic, complete on ao3 :)

When Sirius reached the stairs to the dormitories he sprinted upwards, stopping at the first door he came to, just like the prefect had said. But one boy had beaten him there, leaving only two open beds, and he knew better than to think that James would room with him over Peter.  Pleasepleaseplease let there be space in the next one, he thought desperately as he continued onwards.  The door wasn’t open yet—a promising sign, but Sirius couldn’t afford to wait. He threw it wide, and his heart leapt—three beds. He turned to call over his shoulder— “Oi, James, Pete! There’s another one up here, and I think it’s empty—oh!” It was not, as it turned out, quite empty. Four, not three, red-curtained beds stood in a circle around the room, and on the one immediately to his right sat a very small, strange-looking boy, eyeing Sirius warily.  Somehow, despite the first-years having arrived at the tower only moments ago, the boy was already dressed in the red satin pyjamas that had been laid out on each of the beds. They hung loosely off his frame, which was rather pale and thin. His face was dominated by a long, freckled nose and framed by thick, honey-coloured curls, with dark circles underneath watchful eyes that were an unusually bright shade of brown; almost like amber, or melted glass.  They were nice eyes.  Sirius realised he was staring. To cover it—and to make up for failing to notice the boy initially—he crossed the room and stuck out his hand.  “Hello! Sorry, didn’t see you there—you’re so quiet. I’m Sirius, what’s your name?” The boy looked down at Sirius’s hand cautiously, and after a moment’s hesitation, he shook it. His palm was very warm.  “It’s—I mean, I’m Remus. Remus Lupin.” He had a calming, quiet voice, with a slight accent that made Sirius think of rolling hills and wide-open countryside.  Sirius beamed at him. “Lovely to make your acquaintance, Mr. Lupin.”

i’m a wreck (without you here) —— i sorta based mike and will’s falling out on something that happened to me after i moved away and didn’t tell one of my closest friends. so it’s kinda like a fix-it for myself?

but it’s also the fic i’ve worked the longest on and i’ve put so much care into this universe that the grip it has on me is ridiculous. i almost don’t want to finish writing it cause i’ll miss working with this version of mike 😔

WIP Wednesday

ive been working on my former-child-star Jake/nepo-baby-rockstar Bradley fake dating/friends-with-benefits hangster fic a lot this week and im loving where it’s going so here’s some pining idiots.

it’s late so im not gonna tag anyone, but if you have something you’re excited about, consider this your tag!

“Okay, give me the full picture. What are you wearing?” Bradley asks, his voice low in the receiver.

Jake barks out a laugh. “Not that kind of call.”

“You could still tell me,” Bradley responds, and Jake can hear the pout in his voice. He refuses to admit that it makes him smile.

He sighs. “Sweatpants and a t-shirt.”

“And how tight is the t-shirt?”

Jake grins. Fuck, he likes him so goddamn much. “Tight enough.”

“You’re so bad at this,” Bradley says with feigned exasperation. “Can we switch to FaceTime?”

Jake hesitates for a moment. “Um, can we talk first?” he asks, his fingers tapping out an erratic beat where they rest on the countertop.

Bradley is silent for a second. “…Sure.”

“It’s just… I have to talk to you about something, and I don’t want to see your face when I do it.”

“Sounds ominous,” Bradley responds, his voice flat and even.

“I got an invite to Logan Lee’s wedding.”

“Who the fuck is Logan Lee?”

“I thought you binged Baby On Board?”

“I watched your scenes.”

Jake blushes. This is why he hates FaceTiming Bradley. “Logan played my brother.”

“Which brother? Wasn’t the whole premise the big adopted family?”

“Well he wasn’t the baby, Bradley, that kid’s only like five years old now.”

“Oh, sweetheart, do I have bad news for you about the passage of time.”

Jake bites back a smile. Asshole. “Anyway, he played my ‘twin,’” Jake says, calling back the not-actually-funny-but-the-laughtrack-thought-it-was-hilarious running joke on the show, since their characters were adopted the same year.

“Oh. That one.”

He rolls his eyes. “Yeah. Anyway. The wedding is in two months. In Italy. You’re my plus one, if you want to come.”

Bradley is silent for a moment before he carefully asks, “You want me to go with you?”

“You’re named on the invitation, Bradley. And as far as everyone is concerned, we’ve been in a relationship for the last two and a half years.”

“I mean, you can tell them I’m busy, I won’t be offended if you don’t want me there. Could make photos awkward.”

Jake rolls his eyes. “I’ll have more fun with you there. But you don’t have to. I know you’re on tour—“

“Tour ends in a month,” Bradley says, cutting him off. “I’ll be there.”

Jake feels betrayed by the hopeful feeling swelling in his chest, by the grin that takes over his face, by the way he knows Bradley can hear it when he confirms with an uncertain, “Yeah?”

“Yeah. Now switch to FaceTime and take your pants off.”

while creating a sort of a web weave type of post for the latest creation of @boxboxbrioche and I, involving vampire strollonso and sexy angst, I originally went for a different aesthetic alltogether. it was a lot more dramatic and extensive, but I ended up using something simpler and "lighter", focusing more on photos of Fernando and Lance, plus settling on blue and red hues as opposed to just red or "bloody vampire" aesthetic.

i had a combination of aesthetic images to intersperse with strollonso pics and quotes but ended up not using them. though, i did edit one and actually like it a lot, hence, I want to share it with you.

kinda neat, no? maybe I'll use it some other time. it was fun dusting off my photoshop skills.

analysis:

i'm an idiot (but that's already a given)

i tend to either get straight into the action, or set the scene with how the mc is feeling during the fic

i either write a ridiculously long sentence with too many commas or a teeny tiny sentence (with still too many commas)

writing first sentences is one of the hardest parts of writing for me, so i tend to write them last otherwise i'd never finish anything lmao

How many works do you have on ao3?

30… I'm quite proud of the fact that I've made so many, and 29 of them in just 2½ years (granted, most of them are quite short, but there are a few longer ones in between)

2. What's your Ao3 word count?

272,066… Holy Force, according to a quick google search, that equates to about 3 average novels, damn.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Star Wars, mostly the prequel trilogy. I have two “older” Yu-Gi-Oh fics.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

1. Rain with 298 kudos. This is actually my newest story and in just a week after I posted it, it had overtaken all my other works (I guess people like it). It's cute fluffy and smutty obikin, where our boys get stranded and given a small but much-needed holiday.

2. ‘Com’Passion with 280 kudos. I can't hide the fact that my guilty pleasure is threesomes. This one is smut with a lot of emotion, involving two experienced masters (Mace and Obi-Wan) taking Anakin to their bed after he walks in on them.

3. Nanika the daughter of the Force with 279 kudos. This fic, where Anakin is sent back in time as a woman, is my baby and biggest challenge.

4. Hearts' desires with 263 kudos. Sweet, smutty obikin with too much plot, featuring Anakin and Obi-Wan's first time together.

5. All I want for Christmas with 211 kudos. This is last year's tooth-rottingly cute and fluffy Christmas fic, where Obi-Wan returns home and realizes he can't escape Anakin and Padmé's love.

5. Do you respond to comments?

Always! (It can sometimes take a few days if RL is demanding my attention) Commenting is the lifeblood of fandom, and it's through commenting that I've found many of my friends here.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Um, I have a few that could compete for that title... but I'd have to say Fallen, it's short, ambiguous and it hurts so much. I have others equally angsty, my very first SW fic In The End is also very angsty.

7. What's the fic your write with the happiest ending?

All I want for Christmas, it is just SO happy that it is nauseating (I got fluff poisoning writing it)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, and I'm very grateful for that. I have a few people asking if I'm going to continue with Nanika soon... I will, promise!

9. Do you write smut? What kind?

Yes, I do... I don't know if it's a specific type... but it's not very kinky (I love reading all kinds of smut, I'm just not brave enough to write it yet)

10. Do you write cross-overs?

I have a few faint bunnies in deep freeze, but they're not very detailed and most likely won't be written… so no, but never say never.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

Nop, but I'm considering translating back one of my own stories at some point, just for the fun of it.

I have. I wrote The Jedi and the darksider together with my sweet heart Zolita. It was an inspiring and challenging experience to write Melany and Zaya's story.

Obikin (I can't deny it), BUT they are not my only love, and I will happily let them take a third to bed with them at any given opportunity.

15. What's your WIP you like to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Pirates of the Galaxy, and it is a damn shame!

I've been told that I'm good at writing atmosphere, and admittedly, it's one of my favorite things to write, so it's not really surprising. Haunt me for a year is testament to that.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Dialogue... I struggle with it every single time, but I'm stubborn and will keep practicing so that maybe one day I'll feel like I've gotten good at it.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?Probably not dialogue, but I'm toying with the idea of writing spells in other languages, preferably old Sith, there's just not much known Sith language.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Yu-Gi-Oh, back in 2016 before I stumbled into the SW fandom and got lost in the galaxy far far away.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

I love them all, they all have a very special place in my heart and it is almost impossible to chose, but I will say Tave Jen’drajuna; the dark family is just… it is me.

My very first long fic Light and darkness. I still love the idea of vampire Sith Anakin, but I was so inexperienced when I wrote it and even though I adore the story the writing could be better.

The closest I've gotten to hate, which wasn't really hate, just kind of funny is a few different commenters messaging me after I introduced Hawke in my long fic (the other clearly labeled Love Interest, 250k words in mind you) asking whether it was going to be Cullen in the end because they aren't interested in Hawke x Trevelyan and they don't want to read it unless it's Cullen in the end.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Yes. I try to write really characterful, joyful/emotional smuts generally-- the kind where it's just 'totally THEM'. I think smut is only as good as the set up and characters expressing themselves, because clinical/gratuitous descriptions of sex acts without those things doesn't interest me.

10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Nope!

15. what’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Probably The Bequest which is my oc/oc/oc/oc/oc/oc spooky murder mystery fic. I want to believe I will but I would have to learn how to write a damn good mystery and I'm not sure I can. But will at least write some more chapters minimum!

-- snappy, authentic sounding dialogue and banter that captures the characters

-- joyful, ridiculous smut

-- setting descriptions when I really put my back into it

-- being inside a character's POV and capturing their narrative voice uniquely

PLOT. GAH. I only got into Fanfic in January and that's because I languished in Original Fiction Hell for two decades where I wrote and wrote aimlessly. I am a shit plotter and a shit planner. Stories come to me in scenes and feelings. So you can imagine that getting to write something that is fully plotted and world built for me is like THE BEST FUCKING THING EVER. It is so satisfying.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I have written in French a little bit for effect in the Winter Palace, but generally I don't do it, no.

19. first fandom you wrote for?

I wrote a sequel to the book The Witch of Blackbird Pond when I was thirteen maybe because the main ship gets together in the last pages and then it just ENDS and it was written in the 50s and the author was dead. I HAD TO RESOLVE THIS FOR MYSELF.

20. favorite fic you’ve ever written?

Aside from my long fic which is my ongoing baby and I am very proud (I am in the midst of Act 2 and still loving it), it would probably be --

The Commander, the Tevinter and a Bottle of Lightning which is Dorian getting Cullen drunk on fussy Tevinter booze and Rose showing up after he's sauced. (Fluff, Cullen POV)

or

Good Old Garbolg which is Rose and Hawke getting into the storage room to try a bottle of mystery booze (one of the Bottles of Thedas) and it having some unexpected consequences (Fluffsmut, Rose POV)

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Currently 22, but I think of only 16 of them as "real" fics. The others are podfics, the pornbot meta, random stuff I could've just left on tumblr, etc.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

108,039. If you subtract the words I didn't write (like 97% of Birthday Man and add words the AO3 didn't capture because they're in screen shots (like Impulse Shopping with Simon Snow), it's more like 75k.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Carry On exclusively. I did set out to write a Buddy Daddies fix-it fic right after the series finale but abandoned it because (1) I actually just wanted to read BD fic, not write it, and (2) omg, it is so much harder to write for a TV show where there's not an existing written author voice to imitate.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

That has to be What Eats You, but it wasn't angsty for Snowbaz, only for Lamb. 😂 Ooh, and the ending of Missing was sort of angsty--though again, not really for Snowbaz--but I didn't write that part, @oxi-is-a-moron did. (So it's not boasting to say that it's beautiful 🥺.) I have a WIP idea that's still just a summary paragraph. It's extremely angsty with a bittersweet-at-best ending, and I will only ever write it if I decide it hurts more to keep it in my head than to let it out.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Everything's a Story. Because the ending is Baz pandering to ME.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not yet, but it's been less than a week since I posted the fandom's first bestiality fic, so we'll see.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes--about half my "real" fics are mature or explicit. I find it very very challenging to write, it takes a lot longer than other writing, I think because my discomfort makes me very self-critical. I've come to realize that the sex has to have emotional / narrative significance for me to want to write it--the one time I wrote a sex scene where the whole point of it was sex, I cringed afterward. (Tbf to baby me, it was my first explicit fic and second fic ever and unbetaed, so whatever.) I guess I can deal with writing smut a little better if it's super cracky but even then, I'd want to keep it brief.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Nope, probably wouldn't. I've thought about "what if Snowbaz time traveled and met Kim and Will from the Will Darling Adventures" but it would be pretty boring my only thought is "they're the same, huh?" (For the record I would read the hell out of that crossover.)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! I love collaborating. For WIPfest I finished @facewithoutheart's WIP, What Eats You?. And @oxi-is-a-moron finished my WIP, Missing. And there was Birthday Man, the Simon's b-day round robin with probably most of you reading this. AND @ic3-que3n and I wrote our bizarre tell-all confessional about the pornbots together. And this spring @ivelovedhimthroughworse and I spent a lovely spring day writing to prompts and thought we'd memorialize it. Honorable mention to @ic3-que3n's art in Behind the Magic. Technically I wrote the words (it was CORBB) but the concept was their idea and we did so much scheming and giggling that it felt like co-writing.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Malmage.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

None. I have a long google doc of ideas but don't really think of something as a WIP until it gets is own file and I start writing. I tend to only have 1-2 WIPs going at a time, and right now there's only one, Basil Pitch's Diary. (Of which ~ 200 words are posted but I have 20k+ and plan to start posting after COC.) So, none. If I ever start the aforementioned angst fest there's a good chance I'll bail partway through.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm funny. I'm told I am good at mixing humor and sex and angst. I have come up with some original concepts. I commit to the bit.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

While I might have original concept ideas, I'm weak on worldbuilding. I tend to stick squarely within the canon-verse. I've never written an AU. My only OC was a sentient mop. I've never even written a villain, I don't think. I struggle with making the MCs do things that I wouldn't do myself, for good or bad. (For instance, I've written almost zero love confessions and tend to write around them because I've never love-confessed to anyone I wasn't already dating and even imagining it makes me want to vanish in a puff of smoke.) I am a very slow writer--I'm in awe of people who can bang out thousands of words in a day, or go from idea to execution in hours. If I can manage a steady 200 words a day, not including editing, that's pretty fast. This pace makes it hard to picture writing a really long fic, ever.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've never really thought about it. It could be nice for scene-setting; I love all the Norwegian in @scone-lover's Northern Downpour, it really adds to the atmosphere, and the German in @spockzilla's Twelve Days of Christmas cracked me up. The lack of translations made it that much funnier when I finally looked it up myself, or when the meaning was obvious. (Guten Abend, meine kleinen Twinks!) So--maybe someday?

Ready or Not. It's the only thing I've written that I've also read for my own entertainment.
