“you owe me sleep, so much sleep.”

part 3 of the Kara and Lena not really dealing with things until the universe makes them trilogy.
Lena takes Kara home after the events "Kara" and in between "desk"
----
The ride home had been quiet.
The brief levity of earlier having quickly evaporated into the cold air as they stepped outside.
Lena stole glances at her in between the press of steadying hands.
Kara's eyes lingered on the way her jaw tensed ever so slightly still.
Lena had Frank take them to Kara's apartment.
Maybe because it was closer.
Maybe because she didn't know what else to do.
Kara wanted to think it was because it was a comfort.
The sound of the lock clicking into place behind them echoed throughout the apartment, louder than she imagined it should have sounded.
Kara leaned against the door as she waited for Lena to hang up her jacket.
"Are you cold?" Lena asked, her voice low and tinged with concern. "Your windows are open; I can close them."
"Uh...no, I'm fine," Kara replied, shifting her weight from one foot to another. She glanced down at her arms and found the beginning of small goosebumps there.
"Are you sure?" Lena hesitated, stepping closer and brushing a strand of hair from Kara's face.
Kara nodded, leaning into Lena's touch.
Her eyes drifted to Lena's lips. "yeah," remembering their fleeting touch earlier, "It's just...it's been a long day."
"Let's get you some rest then," Lena replied softly,
"Wait," Kara murmured, reaching out to catch Lena's hand just as she was about to step into the bathroom. Fingers closing around Lena's wrist before she could disappear.
"Are-are you okay?" Kara asked softly.
Wants to really ask, 'are we okay'?
Lena hesitated, her gaze flickering away towards the clock in the kitchen that blinks back a bleary 11:58.
"It's been a long day."
Lena's lips curved into a semblance of a smile.
"I'll meet you in the bedroom, okay?"
She'd already taken a shower. All she had to do was change.
But it still takes longer than it normally does to get ready for bed.
Her hands too clumsy.
Her body too sore.
She couldn't even get comfortable as she settled into her bed.
She stays as still as her body lets her, tries to become familiar with its pain, familiar with the feel of the sheets on her skin, familiar with the sounds in her ears.
When Lena settles into bed beside her, it's with only inches between them. Still, Kara can feel the tension in her body, the way she's trying to keep herself in one place, too — she never wants to become familiar with such a thing.
Eventually, Lena shifts closer.
Fingertips brushing against her hand, along the bandaids she finds there.
Her head found its way onto her shoulder, her breath warm and steady against her skin.
"I'm not mad at you."
A sigh escapes Lena's lips, her chest rising and falling gently with Kara's own.
"I know."
"I'm still not, not mad at you, though."
I know."
"I was scared."
"I know....I'm sorry." Guilt gnawing again at the edges of her thoughts.
She turns her head slightly, her nose brushing against Lena's hair.
Lena reaches out, her hand searching for Kara's in the dark, finding it among the shadows.
Kara?" Lena whispered, sheets rustling beneath them.
"Yeah?" Kara replied softly.
"You can have those hugs now if you want."
A small smile tugged at Kara's lips, and she drew Lena fully into her arms.
Kara traces the curve of her back, her shoulder, her neck.
Becomes familiar with the feel of her skin. With the softness of her hair — with everything she possibly can.
"You smell like cardamom." Kara smiles gently, caressing Lena's cheek with her thumb.
"My perfume."
Lena replied softly, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Kara could feel the subtle movement against her shoulder.
"And black pepper."
"My lotion."
There was a hint of amusement as her hand brushed the skin just under Kara's shirt.
"I don't know what this is called. It smells a little like your tea." Kara murmured, her breath stirring strands of Lena's hair as she nuzzled her nose into the crook of her neck.
"Your shampoo." Lena shifted closer, slipping her leg between Kara's
"It smells better on you."
"Does it really feel different without your powers?" Lena asked, her question laced with curiosity and vulnerability.
"I don't have to be as careful," Kara admits, running her fingers through Lena's hair, letting them get tangled in the ends.
Kara?" Lena whispered.
"Hmm"
Lena arches her chin up from Kara's chest, catching her bottom lip with both of hers. Kara's hands fall from Lena's hair to the planes of her back. Pulls her in closer. Winces at the slight protest in her ribs. Lena tries to lift up just a little. But Kara keeps her there.
"I'm okay," she protests softly.
Lena relaxes back into her. Places another kiss to the top of her chest, to the hollow of her throat, and then again more firmly to her lips.
When they pull apart, Lena leans forward, keeping her forehead against Kara's and smiling softly, tiredly, "Now, sleep ... You owe me sleep, so, so much sleep."
But Kara stays awake for a while longer, the clock now long past that threshold of midnight that had first greeted them, fingers brushing the back of Lena's hand, feeling the soft skin and the steady pulse as she sleeps. It is a poor replacement for the sound of the heartbeat she has become so used to, but for now, it will do.
