Part of being Canadian is how similar we are to the US, and honestly not a single person on earth I think could genuinely pin point the difference between Canadian and American culture but the average Canadian. Americans assume we're the same as them (we aren't), even a bunch of Canadians think we're Americans, especially around voting seasons, and about half our cultural identity is "we're Not American!" but there are some cultural differences and if we all spoke French equally we could have had a language distinction but nooooo. Despite not being America unfortunately such a fuck off massive country right below your teeny tiny ass country (population wise) does result in a cultural avalanche from said fuck off massive country. Especially when you share a language.
The war of 1812 will forever be funny to me though because Americans were like "hmm maybe Canadians would also like to tell the British to fuck off, we will invade to show them!" And Canada was like *burns down the white house* and we've been tentatively chill with each other ever since lmao (even when we probably like. Shouldn't be cool with America but like. We could not risk that implosion politically or otherwise it'd be suicide).

I think I'm beyond the point of an organised belief system or more far-out philosophical stance than I used to be, like I toyed with the idea of philosophical satanism for a while but learning about how shit the Satanic Temple and LaVeyan Satanism were really soured me on satanism on any level outside of aesthetic. Like fuck it I'll be a poser and dig satanic imagery while being actively critical of the institutions and foundational texts of the wider satanic/pagan movement. I'll respect the people and their own belief and adherence to an idealised version of that, but my belief in any of it, even as a transgressive counter-cultural movement, is gone.
Like for a while I just discussed satanism as a concept and talked about the tenets and how it can be a tongue-in-cheek reaction to organised religion that reflects and contrasts and is empowering and all that, and then it turns out one of the guys behind The Satanic Temple, Doug Mesicko or Doug Mesner or whatever his fucking name is, had a pro-eugenics website until very recently, chose to platform KKK members for years and is generally a very shitty, antisemitic gloryhog.
Like satanism as it exists today is a hokey novelty that some carnie came up with, and now the leading satanic org in the world take people to court because they have a copywrited version of Baphomet. It's a con, and it took the wind out of my sails, especially as more people championed TST on the grounds of religious freedom despite their consistently terrible track record in winning court cases for civil liberties.
Pro-Satan, pro-666, pro-power to the people, pro-transgression. That shit belongs to everyone. But my stance to any sort of institutionalization of that is that it should be burned to the ground. Nothing good comes from a counter-cultural institution. It's an oxymoron.

Do you know of any very canadian uncharasmatic creatures? I'm doing a project for a contest, and the prompt is "coast to coast" something recognizable all across Canada. I like to focus on uncharasmatic species (I've done a slug quilt) but I've hit a dead end.
The ideal creature would be something that plays an important roll in the ecosystem, but is often overlooked.

There's lots of less-loved canadian critters out there! Here are a few that might fit your description:
The Arctic hare, which is an important source of food for other animals in the winter
Canada geese, whose eggs and goslings also provide food, and who disperse seeds as they migrate.
Any of the resident squirrel, groundhog, or prarie dog species-- again as both food for predators and as seed dispersers
Porcupines are also seed dispersers, and their regular disturbance of the soil while digging for food is an important part of the nitrogen cycle.
Fishers are generalist predators which keep populations of snowshoe hares and porcupines in check, as well as rodent populations. They are also scavengers which help break down larger deer and reindeer carcasses.
Lastly, and one of my personal favorites: the painted turtle is an important part of aquatic ecosystems, consuming vegetation and small aquatic invertebrates and being consumed by rodents, canines, and snakes as eggs or juveniles.
I hope this gave you some ideas, and I'd be very interested to learn which animal you end up choosing!

You've just made me remember how much I used to love Twister as a kid, and that probably says just as much about me as how often I watched The Princess Bride or Labyrinth. ❤️

When Twister was on Netflix, let me tell ya: I watched it almost daily.
Twister came out when I was twelve years old, and I just moved to the Canadian prarie provinces. My father saw that it was a hit (in the theatre), so when it was available to rent, we sat as a family to watch it. We then owned a copy on VHS.
I was scared.
My stepma was horrified.
Dad laughed.
It's the perfect movie: romance- between Bill & Melissa, and Bill with Jo, thriller - is a twister gonna pop up and wreck the day again?, has a great human villain-Jonas, has great humour- "Cow." "Another cow." "Actually, I think that's the same cow.", perfect unhinged character, Dusty.
The only movie that's better? The 1999 cinematic classic The Mummy.

Allium canadense, Canadian garlic, ail du Canada, Ongions des praries.
Allium is the Latin word for garlic. Why this particular species of allium is called Canadian garlic is unclear since it is native to almost all of North America. I did step on the plant by accident once and it quickly apologized, whispering “excuse me.” So maybe that’s it.
The plant is grown as a vegetable in Cuban home gardens. I doubt it is used often as either garlic or onion in the states or even in Canada. Various native American tribes would rub the plant on their body as protection from insect, lizard and scorpion bites. As a vegetable, chronic ingestion of the bulbs can cause gastroenteritis, and both horses and cows can develop anemia from chewing the plants. So, I don’t think it is the ideal addition to a salad. Its best use today is as an ornamental bulb.
The narrow grass-like leaves emerge in early spring and then are topped by tiny clusters of six-petaled star-shaped white flowers with green centers. I particularly like the slightly purple stripe that divides each of the petals. They certainly aren’t showy plants like the allium gigantum which blooms later, but they are quite nice in an understated Canadian way.

Blackbird's Article Roundup
These are the latest articles I've found and boosted on mastodon, and am sharing here for folks who don't keep up with me there. I hid the links for a few more articles behind the read more to keep this post from being too long.
First up we have a criminal Justice article that's infuriating but it highlights the terrible effects of Louisiana's three strike laws and stuff pushed by attorney general Landry.
Next up is this article on the refusal of the Canadian Government to search the Prarie Green Landfill where they believe the bodies of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran, and an unidentified woman, who's been given the name Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe by the Indigenous community, are located.
Next article on the list is one about the need in Canada to develop an integrated wildfire and forest management plan that prioritizes Indigenous knowledge and science in order to limit the destruction of ecosystems.
This article is on the need for air conditioning units in schools due to the intensified heat waves, and the lack of community funding in many districts to address this need.
This last article is on how 85% of polled college faculty members wouldn't recommend going to college in Florida to a student or colleague, and how there's an exodus of brain drain from the state due to the current political climate.

one of my favorite things to do when I’m bored is just scroll around in the ab/sk prairies just looking at the names of all the small towns. Like... bindloss. empress. estuary. Then leader, prelate, septer. You have success, and admiral, and vanguard. All of these are just... places you can Go, if you really really want to.
The trio of ensign/vulcan/kirkcady, all which you can drive through one after another, is just the top tier of small town names

For Ramadan, I thought it would be nice to share my favorite sitcom featuring mostly Muslim characters, the Canadian show Little Mosque On the Prairie. If you miss the lighthearted easy jokes of old school sitcoms, without too much cringe, I wholeheartedly recommend this show, and you can stream the entire series on YouTube. Highly recommenced for Schitts Creek fans, as this also takes place in small-town Canada, but be warned, some of the episodes on this playlist might be out of sequence.
