watch your anger
by loosingletters (@loosingmoreletters)
T, 1k, Cangse Sanren
Summary: Watch your anger, her master used to say, never reprimanding Cangse Sanren for her temper tantrums, mainly reminding her of what she stood to lose if she gave in. Cangse Sanren survives. Wei Changze does not. Kay's comments: Knew this one was going to hurt before going in, but phew did it hurt! I really loved it though. A canon divergence story where Cangse-sanren survives the last night-hunt she went on with her husband, but Wei Changze still dies and we even get to witness how and it's not pretty. I really enjoyed Cangse-sanren't voice in this story and her anger especially. The story follows the time immediately after Wei Changze's death and I also really liked how it shows Cangse-sanren's struggles, e. g. the excerpt below. Excerpt: A-Ying clings to her, starts crying when Cangse Sanren leaves his sight. She can’t go on even a minor nighthunt with him, she cannot tell him to stay behind. Her wounds are far from healed and her hands won’t stop shaking and any craft Baoshan Sanren ever taught her cannot be applied. Cangse Sanren wanted children, a dozen little hands pulling at her skirts and begging for bedtime stories, but she never wanted to raise a child on her own. A-Ying is sweet, but he throws tantrums and she lacks Changze’s patience, his creativity for appropriate games, his steady hand preparing wonderful meals. She lacks all she needs to raise her son safely, far away from the sects.
pov cangse sanren, canon divergence, cangse sanren lives, angst and hurt/comfort, wei wuxian isn't adopted by the jiangs, non-yunmeng wei wuxian, yanling daoren, baoshan sanren, canonical character death

Wei Wuxian is a good child. It's what every adult around him says, at least. If you ask for what he thinks, he'll say he's just doing his best to not be a burden.
At 13 years old, it's the first time he's been truly alone in his family house. His parents are always traveling somewhere, they used to bring him with them when he was little and didn't need to go to school, and Wei Wuxian still remembers those days with bitter fondness, but after he started school his guardian for a while was his grandma.
But now she's gone and his parents did not ask him if it was ok before they took off overseas once again. Although, his father did look a bit guilty.
"You're old enough, now, and you can cook, so it's fine for us." his mother said.
"If the school needs a guardian to sign a paper, our lawyer can do it, you just have to call him." his father forced a smile "Although he's going to visit you once a week. And we asked the neighbors to help, too."
"Oh! And your uncle Fengmian is going to look after you, too, ok?" his mother had no problems with smiling "We're going to do our best to come back more often."
"And you can always call us, ok?" his father looked at his wife's smile and suddenly his expression softened and his smile turned more real.
Wei Wuxian felt sick, but didn't say anything.
If they didn't want to stay, he wouldn't make them.
So, he tried his very best to live his life without complaining and with little to no tears. He smiled, laughed and joked around, trying to convince himself he was ok. That he was happy.
But sometimes, it was always too much for him and he felt negative emotions he tried with all his might to smother inside a deep box and kick to the back of his mind.
"Jealous." he said out loud "I feel jealous."
"What? Of who?" Jiang Cheng looked at him weirdly, as if doubting his words and thought he was crazy.
They were alone in the other boy's room playing video games before dinner, during one weekend Wei Wuxian was forced invited to stay over.
"You." Wei Wuxian shrugged, making his character die in the game.
"...Why?" Jiang Cheng's right eyebrow was almost kissing his hairline.
"Your parents are here." he hugged his knees, trying really hard to not cry "They fight a lot, but they love you and are here." sniffing, his voice trembled as he confessed his deepest feelings "I'm lonely."
Jiang Cheng looked down at his hands still holding the controller, biting his lip. He thought about what he should do, and ended up scooting over and throwing an arm around his friend's trembling shoulders.
"It's ok." he said, feeling awkward.
"I hate them." Wei Wuxian whispered against his knees.
Jiang Cheng felt his heart freeze for a moment "Sometimes..." he started "Sometimes I hate mine, too..."
Wei Wuxian cried silently for a while and Jiang Cheng kept half hugging him until he lifted his head and they both laughed at their red eyes and wet cheeks.
They didn't talk about it again until they were already in highschool and Wei Wuxian decided he wouldn't update his parents about his life anymore, and not be the first to call. Jiang Cheng kept supporting him silently and they started planning their future away from their parents.
When Wei Wuxian came out and started dating Lan Wangji, he didn't tell his parents directly, but his father liked his social media post. Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes and called them gross, but didn't tell any adults that the boys were sleeping together at that lonely house.
They were accepted in different universities. Wei Wuxian decided to go overseas by himself, while both Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng were accepted at the same university in a bigger city.
"I will wait for Wei Ying." Lan Wangji said, a few days before moving.
"You know..." Wei Wuxian snickered "There's this thing called vacation, I don't know if you heard..."
Lan Wangji huffed, amused.
"And my lawyer said I can come back every summer for vacation. But Lan Zhan could go visit me too, right? Lan-er-gege is richer than this lonely man." he chuckled, hugging his boyfriend.
"...Fine." Lan Wangji silently sighed "I can visit Wei Ying during winter break and Wei Ying can visit me during summer."
"Perfect!"
When they were hugging each other in the airport saying their farewell to Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng clung to him hard and long, eyes closing forcedly.
"Are you still lonely?" he asked in a low voice.
"No." Wei Wuxian smiled, squeezing him back "A little."
"Still hate them?"
"A little. Yes."
They parted with wobbly smiles.
"It's ok." Jiang Cheng said.
"It's ok." Wei Wuxian nodded "I'll be back soon."
"You better!"

If Wei Wuxian's parents were still alive, you can bet that he wouldn't have to hide scars that came from zidian, he wouldnt have to smile away his pain because that was the only way to get throught, he wouldn't have to listen to people speaking ill of his parents and he probably wouldnt have felt that he needed to give up his golden core either.
He would have probably had scars that came from tripping or falling like all children do, he wouldnt hide them either. He'd just smile and recount the story with joy. If he felt pain, he would go to his parents and they would comfort him with warmth and reassurance that they were there for him. And he would only hear laughter and loving words from his parents, because they would never need to tell him harsh, unforgiving words.

Ok but
18 yrs old WWX, his parents are alive and he is one of the most strongest cultivators.
One day, he was saving a young group of non cultivators from a super strong yao while his parents where in the city buying things... and them everyone was so impressed by him, so tall, hansome and strong, everyone blushes
Until Lan WangJi appears, them WWX, the strong handsome super manly cultivator that just seemed to be totally unfazed by his hurts start to whine and being super clingy to this stoic guy of how he is so hurt and need to be carried in some strong arms and being called "shameless"
It was all fun and games but he continued and his parents show up... WWX shut his mouth quickly but his already had been to late, for that day in every chance she have, CSSR jokes about it and start to call LWJ son-in-law and Wei ChangZe start to do the same but not in the same proportion and more seriously, what is worse on his son opinion

More of my extremely specific half-undead Wei Clan nonsense
It's kind of amazing how quickly you can get used to being woken up every thirty minutes to the sound of shrill screaming.
Not that it ever stops being awful, of course. Just that you eventually stop hoping it won't happen, and resign yourself to this being your future for the next year or so.
Xiao Xie is still mostly asleep, already clumsily moving to de-tangle herself from the warm circle of her husband's arms. She's stopped by Changze giving her a gentle squeeze, and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "I goddit, m'love," he slurs. "You go back t' sleep."
The he is gone, and taking the warm circle of his arms with him. He pads across the room to lift their crying son from his cradle. A candle flickers to life, not nearly bright enough to disturb her rest should she decide to sleep on. Xiao Xie rolls over to watch her husband tend their baby.
Wei Changze tucks a-Ying into the crook of one arm and raises the other hand to his mouth. With practiced ease, he bites deep into the tip of his pinky finger, tearing at his own flesh, and offers the bleeding little stump for their hungry son to nurse on. She never gets tired of watching it; the way Changze's whole body curls around a-Ying, the adoring look on his face when he's the one feeding their baby. He looks adoring when she's the one nursing him too, of course, and he loves to come up to her and kiss her hair and her hands and the back of a-Ying's little head, but she thinks there's something special when it's Changze feeding a-Ying from his own body. Something that satisfies him.
"Does it matter?" She asks as the thought occurs to her. "How much of each he gets?"
Changze makes a thinking sound. Says "It won't hurt him or anything if he gets one more than the other, but blood is harder to wean from. Apparently a-Niang had a hard time birthing me, and she was sick for a long while after. She didn't have much milk to give, so Baba fed me almost entirely by himself, and I didn't wean completely until I was seven. Even when I started on solid food, I only wanted meat, and preferably raw."
"That explains why you're still such a big baby about eating your vegetables."
He pretends not to hear her, taking his finger back from a-Ying and draping a cloth over his shoulder to burp him against. Xiao Xie shifts the blankets around until she's completely hogged all of them, tucked around her on all sides like she's the filling of a dumpling. She closes her eyes. A moment later another thought occurs to her, and she pops her head back up. "Do you still need it?"
"You were supposed to go back to sleep, my love," Changze says. Then "You've seen me eat human flesh before."
"Yes, but only once, and it was two years ago! I didn't know if you only did that because you wanted to."
Changze makes more thinking sounds. And then he makes more thinking sounds, until Xiao Xie whines at him not to tease her and he relents. "I don't need it often, and it probably wouldn't kill me to quit entirely, but it wouldn't be pleasant. It would be like... hunger, but with your whole body, not just your stomach. There's a constant ache. It can make us stressed and anxious, twitchy. A-Ying, baobei, can you burp for me, please? You drank so much, your little belly is going to hurt if you don't."
"Will he need it?"
"Hm?"
She props herself up on her elbows. "If only I feed him, and we never give him any meat, will he be able to live like that? Safely, comfortably?"
In the dim candlelight, Changze lifts his head to look at her. It takes him a moment to reply. "Do you want him to?"
"I will not deny my son food," she says firmly. "If he needs it, then he will have it. I knew what you were before I married you."
"Ah, my love. I know." Her husband smiles at her, and she smiles back, and their baby finally lets out a wet little burp. With a full belly, he settles back down to sleep without fuss, and Xiao Xie settles back into the warm circle of her husband's arms, and gets some more sleep for herself.

horror corn maze event 16 starter for wei wuxian & cangse sanren // @wvsteria
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian sticks his hand curiously near the tiny teeth of one of the ears of corn-- they nip at his fingers as though to bite, and every time, he pulls his hand away just in time, like playing with an angry cat. "If they were running around trying to bite our ankles it might be a little more fun," he says to himself. As it stands, considering all the violent, sentient ears of corn are still on their stalks, it's not much to worry about. There's a rustling noise from behind him, and for a moment he thinks maybe he's manifested running corn somehow, but when he turns, he finds-- "It's you!" he says, his eyes lighting up with delight and relief at seeing her in one piece. He abandons his good-natured taunting of the snapping corn in favor of hurrying over to his mother, glancing behind her. "I'm glad to run into you-- hey, I didn't come from that direction, what's over that way? Is it better or worse than corn-sized flesh-eating corn?"

one of my favorite things about mdzs is that for how heavily its plot involves politics of classism and misogyny... even the characters most directly impacted by it can't and don't free themselves from it. literally the closest exception is mianmian.
meng yao being the "son of a whore" wasn't some sort of commie awakening for him that led him to wanting everyone to be socially equal. he played the political game, climbed the ladders, sucked up to and backstabbed and murdered people, including other prostitutes who actually had nothing to do with how he and his mother were treated at the brothel he grew up in.
he put in so much extra excessive effort for even a fraction of the same respect that members of gentry cultivation clans got. and he did deserve to be treated more humanely! but he feeds into the exact same system that created him, leading to his own undoing.
his efforts were for a fragile upward mobility that was never going to hold up. he never surpassed his origins nor did he empower others in similar stations, because the society he lives in is not one that would accept that.
the second he got caught and all those crimes exposed, he was scapegoated to hell and back, replacing wei wuxian as society's terrible one-sidedly evil boogeyman overnight.
speaking of not-quite male gentry, i think it's interesting that wei wuxian explicitly doesn't try to climb the ladders in BOTH lives, knowing full well that anything he does will be punished just for the sheer fact that he is wei wuxian.
wei wuxian is scolded for giving intelligent and correct answers in school. lan wangji does the same and is praised.
wei wuxian occasionally lounges around with fellow disciples and is punished. jiang cheng does the same and mostly escapes.
wei wuxian refuses to carry his sword around in public (after losing his golden core, which nobody knows) and is scorned as an arrogant upstart. nie huaisang has been doing the EXACT SAME THING for YEARS and nobody bats an eye.
unlike jin guangyao, wei wuxian knew subconsciously from the start that his acceptance was superficial and that he could be cast out any time. when he was 10 and recently taken in by the jiangs, he canonically would not eat or use "too much" food and water because he thought they'd find him a nuisance for "wasting their things" and kick him back out.
now away from just the classism, yu ziyuan is a proud and strong noblewoman in a society that belittles and derides women for everything they do. her strong cultivation doesn't matter. she's victim to the vicious rumors of her husband loving another woman who is strong like her but apparently had a more likeable personality.
it doesn't matter even if jiang fengmian didn't cheat or that wei wuxian is wei changze's son with cangse sanren; yu ziyuan can't bear with the humiliation of herself (and by extension her children) not being "good enough". she's ridiculed for "failing" in that one duty as a wife, mother, and woman.
she lashes out and takes out that anger on everyone present for years, giving her children lasting trauma and also being a key element in how the jiang family and yunmeng jiang sect are effectively wiped out at the hands of the wen clan.
madam jin doesn't even have a name outside of the fact that she's married to jin guangshan. i don't even remember reading anything that indicates if she's a strong or weak cultivator, or what, which in itself proves that to most people, it doesn't matter. she's "just" a woman.
of course she's angry at her husband's affairs and all the bastard children they bring in. but she also can't do anything about them, so she lashes out at the few people she can: servants. non-cultivators, probably. those very same bastard children.
shoutout to meng yao getting shoved down a flight of stairs at age fourteen, because if madam jin tried that move against her husband instead, it would make her lose even more face, which as a noblewoman she'd never do.
and that's not getting into how jiang yanli is consistently sidelined for being physically weak.
that's not getting into how mianmian was actually a good cultivator, but was mocked by everyone around her for trying to stand up for wei wuxian when everyone was turning on him. how everyone scoffed at luo qingyang's words as "just some lovesick woman" who "obviously wants to marry or bed him since he saved her".
luo qingyang is the only one of these characters who HASN'T died. she didn't play society's games like jin guangyao. she didn't dig her heels in confidence of her own abilities like wei wuxian.
she didn't bitterly lash out like yu ziyuan and madam jin. she didn't gently accept it like jiang yanli.
she just LEFT.
she married an ordinary merchant and cultivates separately from mainstream cultivation society, and therein found her own peace and happiness.
mxtx doesn't bother with particularly class conscious or feminist vocabulary to hand-hold readers into understanding these disparities, but that choice highlights them & the deeply entrenched politics of their society even more. i really love it.

Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang family, but he refers to Jiang Fengmian as “uncle” and Madam Yu by her title. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he refers to neither Jiang sibling as his siblings, only going so far as to call Jiang Yanli his “shijie” and refer to Jiang Cheng only by name. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he keeps his original surname (which had to be told to him because street-kid A-Ying only remembered his baby name prior to being found by Jiang Fengmian), is not written into the family records, and only names Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze as his parents across both lives. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but nobody treats him like an heir and Jin Zixuan directly says that he should marry Jiang Yanli (insultingly) to become the heir if he likes her so much.
Schrodinger’s adoption: where a person is totally a part of the family except absolutely no one in said family acknowledges that this “family tie” exists, not the “adopters” and certainly not the “adoptee.”
Bonus: Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he only really expresses concern over his own children’s well-beings and future while allowing Wei Wuxian to mostly do whatever. Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he allowed his wife to whip and punish Wei Wuxian excessively without a word otherwise, something she does not do to her own children.

The Long Winding Road Home by Admiranda

The Long Winding Road Home
by Admiranda

Summary: It had been a simple night hunt, or so they thought. A step too close to the edge and they both fell into the Burial Mounds for what seemed to be one long night fighting their way free. But it has not been one night. It's been more than thirty years. And they don't know where to find their son. But Wei Changze and Cangse-sanren are not fools. Even with confusing rumors and unclear directions, nothing will stop them from finding their way back to their son once again.
Kay's comments: A delightful post-canon story where Wei Wuxian's parents turn out to be alive! They got trapped in the Burial Mounds instead of dying and travelled forward in time to the post-canon era. Before they get reunited with their son though, they're wandering a little while on the search for him, hearing countless rumours and ending up in Lotus Pier where the current Jiang-zongzhu is differen from what they had expected. I'm always here for stories where Wei Wuxian gets his parents back, so I really enjoyed this one!
Excerpt: Something was very wrong in Yunmeng. She felt it as they passed through the towns that lay between Yiling and Yunmeng, the way that people looked at them with suspicion and hustled quietly away, the abandoned houses with lonely ghosts wandering around. Even though they didn’t want to delay for too long, they stopped to lay every one of them to rest if possible. It seemed wrong to pass through Chang-er’s birth land and leave them still restless and seeking help. “Something bad must have happened,” Changze said as they left behind another lonely road. “Fengmian never would have let this occur if he had a choice.”
post-canon, canon divergence, post-canon fix-it, pov cangse sanren, time travel, cangse sanren lives, wei changze lives, not jiang cheng friendly, reunions, rumors, humor, adorable juniors, @ladypfenix

lmao crack au where wei wuxian is actually wen ruohan's biological nephew through cangse-sanren.
cssr and wrh as twins separated from childhood when baoshan-sanren picked cssr up and brought her to her mountain, while wrh grew up as the next wen sect leader.
wrh remains twitchy and angsty abt his missing twin sister until she shows up out of nowhere for the lan sect's lectures. he tries to drag her back home but cssr values her freedom too much and beats him up for it. wrh, who values power over anything else, goes "aight fair enough i respect that but at least visit and send me letters tf". cssr's "like sure wtv just keep ur nose outta my business" and they have the world's most normal twin sibling dynamic.
wrh judges cssr's choice in husband regularly but he's smart enough not to badmouth wei changze where cssr can hear.
"talk shit abt my husband and im shoving you where the sun doesnt shine. i know where u live" "goddamn. fine, woman, chill"
oddly enough, wrh is one of the first to see baby wei ying and his first impression is "that dumpling's ugly as hell" and he gets beat up by cssr again.
despite what wrh says, he becomes a tad bit of the paranoid uncle/brother and gets wen cultivators to- ahem - monitor the wei family while they travel around and bc of that wcz and cssr are saved from death at the last minute and wwx isnt rendered an orphan yay ! cssr's pissed tho bc now wrh has something to blackmail her with and thats not slay
idk where else im going with this but yes, completely normal absolutely sane twins wrh and cssr. thats all

Anyone from civilian to cultivator, child to elderly, knew who Baoshan Sanren was. In one word, a legend. An immortal from a different era, still alive and still teaching to few her cultivation secrets - many envied and wished they were one of her students.
She had various children over the centuries, each with their own success and fame, but recently, although it is known three children were born, none came out telling others about their lineage - something that started to be common since other cultivators wanted to have immortality to themselves at all costs, hunting down the immortal's descendants to use them to their own gains.
They knew some of her disciples who came down her mountain - now a fixed location with better protection than any place on earth, rather than her nomad days. One of them was a woman who was known for her wits, intelligence, craft and beautiful smile - Cangse Sanren.
She was also infamous for her elopement with Yunmeng Jiang sect's former first disciple - Wei Changze.
This was common knowledge, every cultivator had heard this story at least once during their lives, they all knew the names and their connections to each other. But what Lan Wangji failed to connect was the fact that Wei Ying was their only son and is now his boyfriend (who he plans to marry one day).
He knew, objectively, about Wei Ying's parents, but had never met them until one day when they met them by fate during a date to the movies. It was very shocking and nerve-wracking to meet his in-laws so soon into their relationship and in such a casual way, with not even a gift to offer.
Not long after that, he was invited to dinners, then afternoon teas, then lunches and then breakfasts (he felt so honourable the first night he was allowed to sleep in Wei Ying's bedroom). Lan Wangji was, more and more, feeling part of the family, meaning that he was accepted as their beloved son's other half.
When he thought all the nervousness had passed, he was invited to a family gathering with their other relatives from Wei Ying's mother side, and that included Cangse Sanren's mother.
That same afternoon, after accepting the invite, Lan Wangji walked all the way to his brother's apartment (on the other side of the corridor), knocked, walked inside without saying anything, threw himself into Lan Xichen's bed and hugged one (of many, many) body pillows that was a permanent part of his brother's room (a secret from the rest of the family, beside their mother).
"Wangji?!" Lan Xichen was frantic with concern "What happened?"
"I'm going to meet Wei Ying's family."
"...Is it that bad?"
"Wei Ying's grandmother is Baoshan Sanren."
"...Oh."
Lan Xichen laid down beside his younger brother, hugging another body pillow, both staring at the ceiling with stunned expressions.
"Oh." Lan Xichen said again.

I don't pity Lan Qiren at the end of the series when Lan Wangji (his beloved nephew) marries Wei Wuxian (his most detested student) and goes to live his best life as a shameless husband because that's his Karma for extending his decades long one-sided beef with Cangse Sanren to her 15 yr old son. Like, bro legit hated Wei Wuxian before ever knowing the boy because at one point in time the dude's mom shaved his beard and he never got over it and I'm supposed to pity him because now he has to see Wangxian trying to break the world's record for PDA? Nah, suffer lmao, it's good for the soul and maybe now you'll take more seriously that one rule of your clan that forbids holding grudges

I think the saddest part about Wei Wuxian's abuse by Madam Yu isn't the whipping or the kneeling or the belittlement... but the way she treated his parents.
Wei Wuxian's parents are dead. He is an orphan. He also lived under the same roof as the man who knew and was friends with his parents, especially his father who used to be his servant.
And yet he knows almost nothing about them, he knows as much as a bystander about who Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze were. The only things he has is a foggy memory or two and other people's gossip. All because of Madam Yu.
He can't mention them, he can't talk about them at all or ask about them because he will get punished, because Madam Yu hates their (mainly his mother's) mere existence and makes it everyone's problem. And it's so funny too, that she is always the one mentioning them in the first place, always to insult them. Wei Wuxian grew up in a place where his parents were badmouthed all the time, where he couldn't mention them or learn anything about them from Jiang Fengmian because Madam Yu made it impossible.
It's just so sad.

MDZS cooks, rated by Jiang Yanli, the Queen of soup.
Wei Wuxian: abomination unto the kitchen gods! Eating his food is just the beginning of your suffering because rest assured, it'll hurt more coming out.
Lan Wangji: Actually decent at making simple dishes. Stickler for recipes.
Jin ZiXuan: Messes up the spice drawer and substitutes sugar for salt. Get him out of her kitchen!
Jiang Cheng: Elaborate, fancy recipes. Leaves a mountain of dishes in the sink.
Nie MingJue: Stress baker. Makes excuisite croissants, thanks to his upper arm strength.
Nie HuaiSang: Self-declared taste-tester. Will finish off an entire pot just tasting. Persona non grata in the kitchen.
Lan Xichen: Partner in Sunday baking class. Tends to slightly overmix cake batters and make dense spongecakes.
Jin GuangYao: Doesn't cook, but has a palate that should be preserved for posterity. Can tell all the ingredients in a recipe from one taste and recommend whatever is needed to fix it.
Jin Ling: Ruined the microwave trying to cook an egg.
Lan SiZhui: Takes after both his parents. As in, can cook simple recipes but tends to overspice.
Lan JingYi: Would rather live on takeouts and cup noodles.
Ouyang Zizhen: That child will probably get kidnapped one day, lured by a piece of cake. Can't boil water.
Jiang Fengmian: Actually knows his way around the kitchen.
Yu ZiYuan: Can toast bread and slather jam on it. That's pretty much it.
Lan Qiren: Excuse me? Why cook yourself when you can pay someone else to do it?
Wei ChangZe: King of barbecue. Has a secret spice mix that he hides from everyone.
Cangse Sanren: Can't believe she's saying this, but actually agrees with goatee Lan.
Wen Qing: Coffee connoisseur. Hasn't bothered to explore the rest of the food pyramid.
Wen Ning: Master Chef material.
