this is a genuine question, but your post about florida not having any state income tax and how that lends itself to the cats' and the bolts' success: why have the preds, located in tennessee, a state that also has no individual income tax, not had as much success -- or any at all, really? they made the finals in 2017, and lost to the pens, and have been on a downward spiral ever since, essentially drifting in and out of (very shallow) cup-contention, until this most recent season, where they bombed the fuck out even after signing a player like stamkos in free agency. i think success has far more to do with actual management than anything else; i don't doubt that lower / nonexistent individual income tax is for sure a draw, but the cats had two decades wherein they never won a single playoff series and were essentially seen as a poverty franchise (hence the joke that cats fans all started watching hockey three years ago -- not true, but…). they've only recently begun to find success in the postseason, due to zito's hiring as gm in 2020, and especially since maurice was hired as hc in the 2022 offseason. another big draw is the locker room culture; the cats locker room is a players' locker room. there is no demand to be a certain way. the players have a genuine comradery -- regardless of how you feel about barkov as a player, he's a good captain. if you look at the dynasties of the late-2000s + the 2010s (pens + hawks + kings), they're located in pennsylvania, illinois, and california respectively -- pennsylvania and illinois have relatively low income tax, but california has one of the highest income taxes in the country. alberta has a higher rate on taxable income than ontario but the oilers have had more postseason success than the leafs (i still think they're poorly-managed). the sens have made it to the conference finals more recently than the leafs; the reason they were a trash fire up till this season was melynk and dorion. take the isles dynasty in the early eighties: new york as a state had high income tax, about 15% for top-earners. mike bossy would have been getting taxed 50 to 60% of his annual income ($500k). by the time reagan had successfully cut down on taxes, the isles had been dethroned by the oilers. so, i'm not entirely sure that your argument tracks?

and yes, obviously management matters. not sure where in my original post i implied it wasn’t? not mentioning the importance of management is not equivalent to saying management comes secondary to looser tax laws. i am a LEAFS FAN, i promise i understand the importance of good management.

my whole point was just that when the cap remained flat and many teams found themselves with less money to work with than they’d assumed, not having to worry about certain tax laws is a huge advantage. not every team can offer something like that. every team could, theoretically, develop an A+ front office and locker room culture. every team cannot re-write the tax laws of their city to make it a more favourable destination / allow them to give out cheaper contracts (again, refer to my tags: for a player to take home $10M in toronto, you’d have to pay them MORE than $10M. this wouldn’t be the case somewhere like florida)

and lastly, and this is petty of me i know but like. i am so sorry i am a florida team HATER i truly do not care about being objective when it comes to either of those teams lmao!! tbh i don’t care about being objective about any team!! i want MY guys to win and for MY team to have every advantage and for my enemies to be disadvantaged in every conceivable way. as is my right as a sports fan. also like i’m glad you’re happy with the cats’ captain. do you think you could tell him to tell bennett to stop concussing people by any chance? just seems like something a good captain might consider doing.
