Rehearsal for festa major. Video shared by Món Casteller.
In Tarragona (Catalonia), there is the tradition that on festa major (traditional Catalan holiday celebrated in each town or city on their patron saint's day), which in Tarragona is celebrated on September 24th, the four castellers groups of the city go up and down the stairs in front of the city's cathedral doing a pilar and continue walking the pilar through the down-hill street until they cross all the Font square near it. The whole process is about 500 meters and takes each group an average of 10 to 15 minutes to do.
Castellers are the Catalan tradition of doing "human towers", which can have many people on each layer or floor. A pilar is when the "tower" only has one person on each floor, like you can see in the video. In this video, you can see the group Colla Castellera de Sant Pere i Sant Pau practising going down the stairs in front of the Cathedral.
Enric Serra i Auqué (7 January 1858, Barcelona - 16 February 1918, Rome) was a Catalan painter; best known for his landscapes in the Neoclassical style.
Thank you to @pinayelf , @dreadfutures , @blarrghe and @theluckywizard for tagging me! (You're all tagged back for next week) I had to work last weekend and I got caught in a wild reference hunting, but... It's all Whale AU/ an original story, I hope you won't mind!
1) Going on with costume designs for Aisling, this time we're going regional! After a long and difficult research, I can affirm that this is the traditional dress of Alghero, Sardinia, where her mother comes from and she grew up in this iteration. Sardinian traditional clothes are absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to draw her in one... But Alghero Is a minority, and things are quite different. First by the fact that I actually struggled to fact check this outfit. I'm still only sure it's geographically appropriate, but not time appropriate (the story is set in 1907). All I can tell you about it is that it may have more influences from Barcelona than from Sardinia, and that a necklace is made of coral, which is very typical of the town.
2) A master study which will serve as a banner? Aisling and Raina having a picnic on the beach. They're eating papassini, typical biscuits made with raisins and glazed with sugar, Aisling is reviewing for an upcoming job interview with a very special professor. I drew the landscape on memory alone, I tried to look for references but I wasn't lucky. Hopefully I've been there so many times growing up that I still have a plausible image.
... I talked for eight years, sorry, I'm happy of this project ahahahah and about learning more about a place I've spent so much time into.
It's late for tagging, isn't it? Going with people I don't feel bad in pestering: @salsedinepicta @ndostairlyrium @shivunin @melisusthewee

hello tumblr people who read books originally written in languages other than english, i have a request
i have to write a book review for my reading in translation module at the end of november and i’m trying to find a book to use for it. i’ve not (to my knowledge) read any books that have been translated to english from another language - besides one i also read in its original spanish but i don’t wanna use that for this - so i have literally no ideas.
basically i’m looking for book recs, it’s a translation to english i’ll need to use but if you don’t know whether it’s been translated that’s fine i can easily find out myself :) thank you to anyone who helps! <3
sometimes i feel like i have a bit of "what about meeeeeeeee" syndrome when it comes to aragonese culture. but our culture and traditions are already being erased as we speak so idk i think i should get over it
I think it’s more painful if he loses his trial by combat despite being innocent of his own brother’s murder… And no one will ever believe him because of it :’)
*folklorifies English and only listens to modern pop in Catalan, Welsh, and Basque* *blows kiss* this one’s for the rise of the nation state and its effect on language attitudes
Ramón Casas (Spanish/Catalan, 1866-1932)
Una monja
Museu de Montserrat
Ramón's father had made his fortune in Matanzas (Cuba) and his mother came from a wealthy family. Casas dropped out of school to study art in the studio of Juan Vicens Cots in 1877. In 1881, while still a teenager, he co-founded the magazine L'Avenç. The number published on October 9, 1881 included a sketch of the cloister of the monastery of San Benito de Bages. That same month, accompanied by his cousin Miquel Carbó i Carbó, a medical student, he began his first stay in Paris. That winter he studied with Carolus-Duran and, later, with Henri Gervex. Meanwhile, he worked as a correspondent in the French capital for L'Avenç. The following year he exhibited some of his works at the Sala Parés in Barcelona and in 1883 he exhibited his Self-portrait dressed as a flamenco at the Champs Elysees in Paris. That painting earned him an invitation as a member of the salon of the Société d'artistes françaises.
In 1908, Casas together with his sponsor Deering, traveled through Catalonia. Deering bought an old hospital in Sitges with the idea of turning it into his residence. That same year, Casas began a six-month trip to Cuba and the United States. During this trip he made a dozen oil portraits and about thirty charcoal drawings of Deering's friends and associates.
