Kingdom of Ash Angst

“I promise to bring you back to the light.” (Queen of Shadows, pg. 366)

A promise made in jest, in a time before he knew the color of her blood and muscle, laid bare before the whip.  Before he knew the sound iron chains made as they dragged across the pristine metal of the coffin crafted to contain a wildfire.  

Once, he’d believed that the scars of Endovier were the worst that she would experience under his watch, his care.  That his tattoos, his presence would eventually chase away the nightmares that sent her tumbling from bed each night.  Running for the light of a candle’s flame or the roaring hearth he’d been so careful to maintain in Mistward.  That the memory of the lightless pits they’d used there for punishment would be the last time his Fireheart was shut in the dark.

That was all before he understood just how much his carranam was willing to sacrifice to keep her people safe.

Her happiness.  Her life.  Her hope that one day she would be able to walk free from the shadows that clung to her from Endovier.

He’d seen her rise from the ashes of an angry, grieving girl into the Queen of Shadows, the true Queen of Terrasen.  One burdened with a glorious purpose and the power to achieve it.

All to watch her willingly submit herself to the blood price that even a legendary queen was not willing to pay.

Because, at the end of the day, his Fireheart didn’t believe she belonged in the world she was rebuilding.  That her ledger was too full to risk tarnishing the ones she’d saved.

That they would survive her loss.  That he would survive her loss.

He wondered, over and over as he flew over countless towns and an endless ocean, what she’d thought as the lid of the coffin slammed shut and the chains were dragged into place around her, blocking out what little light the iron mask allowed through to her sun starved eyes.

If she understood how impossibly meaningless everything they’d achieved would be without her.

He would keep his promise to her, made so many nights ago.  It didn’t matter how many rules he must break.  Even if he must gather the wyrd keys and open a gate himself, he would find her.

He would always find her.

To whatever end.

REVIEW: ‘Throne of Glass’ by Sarah J. Maas

Trigger warning: Violence, murder, death

What would you do to earn a chance at freedom? Celena Sardothein is an 18-year-old assassin and she’s been sentenced to die in a death camp/salt mine. But Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard tracks her down to ask if she’ll participate in a competition against 23 others to become the king’s champion. And if she wins the contest and then serves as champion for four years, she’ll be free to do whatever she wants.

And of course, magic, murder, love triangles and betrayal ensue! Sarah J. Maas’ “Throne of Glass” takes place in a world where magic has been banned and somehow a lot of the top leadership is inexplicably young. (Looking at you, Chaol, Dorian and Nehemia.)

The book is described as a cross between “Game of Thrones” and “The Hunger Games,” and while that is mostly correct, there are a ton of YA tropes here. “Throne of Glass” is YA-trope-tastic. But Maas also skillfully plays with reader expectations and glosses over some of the “Test” scenes in favor of character study and tension.

So much angsty, delicious tension.

It’s a lot of fun.

I’m glad I read Maas’ “A Court of Roses and Thorns” before “A Throne of Glass.” There’s a lot of unevenness in pacing and characterization with “A Throne of Glass” and it is, at times, irritating. Celeana begins as a sort of shallow, haughty character and somehow becomes a hardcore reader and candy enthusiast by the end of the book. That’s right, this 18-year-old assassin loves candy. I also never fully understood Celean’s attraction to Dorian. He’s just…boring. (Give us some more Chaol, though, he’s interesting!)

There’s another misstep and that’s that so many of the character names and place names are so similar. It’s difficult to keep Celena, Cain and Chaol straight just as it’s tricky to keep Eyllwe, Erilea and Elentiya right. Yes, there are different pronunciations but it’s just too close for my comfort.

There’s a bit of mystery sprinkled in as well as some almost screwball elements (tell me that the Yuelmas ball wasn’t a wacky tension-filled scene! I DARE you.)

The major downside to Maas playing with reader expectations is that so, so much of “Throne of Glass” reads like the set up to the rest of the series and we can very easily figure out the major plot points of this book before page 200. And I’m not a fan of this approach.

That said, I’m eager to see how Maas further develops this world. There are some interesting ideas here. I look forward to reading “Crown of Midnight.”
