Drinking Fire Wine With Marith!!
Definitely wouldn't murder a colleague for drug money. That would be crazy.

"The Court of Broken Knives" ch 16
“Tobias?” Marith blinked and raised his head. Made a strangled sound that might have been a laugh. After several attempts he managed to sit up. His voice was thick and strange, coming from a long way off, like he was an animal trying to speak. He took a gulp of his drink. “H-hello. Want to join me?”
“We’ve been looking for you for hours. Where the fuck have you been?”
“I’ve been… here.” he waved his hand vaguely, and knocked over his cup. Its content’s splashed over the table with a hiss, scorching the wood. Tobias jerked backwards.
“What in all hells is that?” Alxine asked in a horrified voice, hastily moving his hands off the table. The liquid was thick and dark and oily. Deep red with a glossy sheen. Tobias could swear it was smoking slightly.
“Fire wine,” said Wrait “Blindness in a bottle, its sometimes known as. Sort of a cross between an alchoholic drink, and the stuff they use to poison wells in a siege.” He looked quite impressed. “I’ve never managed more than a couple of cupfulls myself, and then I was ill for a week.” Would the boy’s prowess never cease?
“You were supposed to be with Emmit,” Tobias growled at Marith “Where, in the gods name is he?” Entirely pointless. Something of a surprise if the boy had any idea where he was at this particular moment, let alone anyone else. But he had to ask.
“Emmit?” Marith blinked at him. “Emmit.. he’s.. in an alley? Somewhere..” His eyes flickered for a moment. Something like a smile flickered over his face. “I… can’t remember where…”

To anyone who hasn't read, I highly recommend. I haven't consumed a ton by Anna Smith Spark, but gosh do I enjoy her prose. The imagery in this book is breathtakingly vivid, multisensory, brilliant and dark. The ambiance throughout the book is impeccable if the vibes you are going for are grimdark-yet-beautiful. Character writing also well executed, with solid dialogue and internal thoughts throughout. The character Tobias feels like he could have walked straight out of a Joe Abercrombie novel.
reads like Joe Abercrombie x Guy Gavriel Kay
Art notes: My original paper sketch & midway through digital painting. Sadly I think I lost a little bit of the tension of the original drawings facial expression when I redrew it digitally.

After Zane’s death, Lloyd and Nya are left to pick up the pieces of the team they call family. They attempt to reconnect with Kai but soon notice something’s not right, that their older brother might not be coping as well as he pretends to. What is he hiding from them?
Ch 4: Nya and Lloyd confront Kai and tensions rise.
Read below or on Ao3
It had been a week. A horrible, tiring week since Nya first laid eyes on her brother again, but they’d let this go on too long already, they had to do something.
Even though she’d just been slumped in front of security cameras and not out in the city like Lloyd, it was still draining. She fiddled anxiously with wires and circuit boards without getting much done for days. The waiting was agonizing. It reminded her of the early days of the ninja when she was stuck on the bounty, forced to watch from afar, until she decided to help in her own way, of course. She itched for action now, not just to be a part of something, but she worried for him. Kai was reckless and often had too many close calls. It scared her. Not that she would ever tell him that.
To be honest, it still didn’t sit right with her. Sure, her brother didn’t always think things through before jumping into the fray, but this was something very different. Kai leaving was already enough of a sign. She’d barely been without him all her life.
Frustration stirred in her stomach. How could he do this? How could he throw away all his responsibility to the team? To her?He was her older brother; he’d always been the one holding it together when their parents left. He was supposed to be the one telling her to move on and comforting her.Memories flickered, Kai reassuring her when something happened at school, his arms wrapping around her in a protective warmth.
It wasn’t fair. Why did the overlord come back, and Zane had to pay the price? Why did they all leave? Why did Kai not care?! Nya gritted her teeth, trying to breathe slower. He’d taken care of her when she was little and been so protective, now it didn’t matter. Sure, she could take care of herself now but being without him felt wrong. Nya cursed. Why did he have to go and do this?!
Maybe she was being immature. She knew he beat himself up about things too much. Nya wished she only had sympathy for him, but she couldn’t quell the anger that sat within her. It stirred like a tidal wave every time she thought about it. But perhaps it was that she still looked up to him. And this ‘betrayal’ roused the storm.
She glanced at the camera footage again, so far so good. Luckily, Kai hadn’t left his apartment for the tavern, and she breathed a sigh of relief when his usual time came and went. She figured Lloyd shared that sentiment, but they had to do something soon.
Lloyd was busy with ninja stuff the next day and she knew he’d want to be there. So, it wasn’t until that evening that Nya found herself at the wheel, heading to a now more familiar part of the city. The car was quiet, radio off, the only sound was Nya’s occasional tapping on the steering wheel. Lloyd sat in the passenger seat, fiddling with the strings on his hoodie. The city lights shone on his blond hair.
“Hey Lloyd,” Nya said tentatively. Her voice punctured the tense silence. The boy in question straightened, though his eyes were still trained on the seat.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be okay.” Her voice sounded lighter than she felt.
“You didn’t see him the other night.” Lloyd looked down, eyes lacking their usual glow. “It’s like he’s just given up.”
Nya sighed, glancing at Lloyd, or as much as she could while driving. If Kai wasn’t going to be the reassuring older sibling, then she had to.
“The thing is,” she began, pushing her hair behind her ear. “I know Kai and he’s always gotten back up again. He’s strong, stronger than any of us sometimes.” She pushed away the emotion gathering in her eyes. “Only unfortunately just as stubborn.”
“Runs in the family.” Lloyd said with a weak smile.
“Hey!” Nya elbowed him gently. Lloyd grinned, brighter than she’d seen him in a while and she found herself smiling too.
“What I mean to say is, he’s just in a rough patch. He’ll get through this.” Nya kept her voice as steady as she could, hoping she sounded more certain than she felt. Truthfully, Kai had never been like this before. She didn’t really know if he would get through this, but she would pretend for Lloyd’s sake.
“Well, if all else fails I’ll drag him back myself.” She said, trying to lighten the mood. The corners of Lloyd’s mouth turned up again, but he stayed silent.
Nya’s nails dug into the wheel as she pulled into the parking lot of a dimly lit convenience store, broken neon sign claiming it was open two hours. A group of figures with hoods stood out front, forked tongues occasionally sticking out past the fabric. The rest of the street was vacant.
The siblings got out of the car without a word. Lloyd shoved his hands in his hoodie pocket as they started down the alley past a graffiti covered wall. Their steps were slow, neither eager to reach their destination.
“I used to look up to him.” Lloyd’s voice came out in a whisper that seemed loud in the quiet outskirts of the city.
Nya turned towards him, feet scraping on the sandy concrete.
“I did too.”
The tavern soon greeted them, wooden boards hanging loosely from the windows, red light spilling from the door. Nya’s skin crawled. The night air felt like it was pressing in on them.
A streetlight shone down past a dumpster.A figure stumbled into the light, letting himself fall back against the brick wall, taking a long drag from his cigarette. He exhaled it gently into the night, eyes closed head back, looking peaceful and seconds from falling over at the same time. Making one last puff, he put the cigarette out with his fingers before tossing it in a nearby dumpster. Sighing, he pulled off his hood, revealing messy brown hair. Nya’s heart dropped. They wouldn’t need to go inside tonight.
Alcohol and smoke, unfairly fitting for a master of fire.
She tapped Lloyd on the shoulder, pointing to the alley. With just a glance his shoulders fell, and she saw that hurt look cross his face, the one that looked just like the lonely little kid they’d met a few years ago. But it quickly vanished as he steeled his expression, mouth turning into a thin line. They made their way over to Kai, each step like a mile.
He didn’t notice them at first, eyes focused lazily across the alleyway. Kai combed his fingers through his hair with a sigh, pushing off the wall. In the low light they could see the outline of his cheekbones. He stumbled as he stood and almost slipped, till he was caught by a kid in a green hoodie.
“Thank-- Oh, it’s you.” His face instantly darkened, and he hurriedly pushed himself off Lloyd, steadying himself on the wall. Lloyd reached for him again, but Kai shook him off. After gaining his footing he spoke again, “Look, I told you to leave me alone last time.” He said, attempting to look stern despite slurring half of that sentence. Nya could already feel something painful rise in her chest.
“Kai,” She cleared her throat. “We need to talk to you.” She hoped he couldn’t hear the wobble in her voice. She thought she heard a mumbled ‘no’ but kept going. “Please, you need help, and you clearly can’t get home like this.” She tried to put on her sisterly scolding voice.
“I’m fine.” Kai looked her in the eyes for the first time that night, bags hanging under his eyes like shadows. He looked more tired than she’d ever seen him and that was saying something considering how much he worked when they were growing up.
“At least let us walk with you.” Lloyd urged, looking up at his brother.
“Not like you’d give me a choice.” Kai muttered, turning towards their route. His dirty hair brushed against the hood of his jacket, limp. Nya and Lloyd soon fell in stride on either side of him, just in case.
The walk took longer than Nya remembered. The alley seemed to stretch into a long hallway of trash and cracking concrete. She kept her eyes on the ground, only so she could avoid the gross puddles, not because every glance at Kai made her stomach twist. Her brother was right beside her, not okay, and she couldn’t do anything.
They continued in silence. Seeing him like this was even worse than she’d imagined. She didn’t realize how much of a front he was putting on for them before.
It seemed like a long time before they were making their way up the steps to Kai’s place and down the hallway with its cracked floorboards and peeling wallpaper. The place looked as shabby as she felt.
A burnt-out light bulb marked the door to her brother’s apartment. Kai dug a key out of his pocket, fumbling with the lock in intoxicated clumsiness. Nya shared a glance with Lloyd who frowned.
Kai twisted the handle with a rough jerk and opened the door, keys sliding out of his hands. He shoved a handful of cash in a drawer before heading to the fridge. Nya and Lloyd followed him inside, watching as he pulled out a slice of pizza and warmed it up in his hand on his way to the couch.
He leaned back on the cushions, shoes up on the coffee table carelessly. Nya wasn’t sure if it was the drinking or if he was always like this now. The apartment was dirtier than she’d last seen it. A pair of pants with a telling copper stain lay on the carpet next to a couple of empty bottles.
In the light of the apartment, Nya could see him better. She could see the yellow of an old bruise on his cheek. A newer red one marked his jaw. He took another bite, uncaring of his split lip and the red on his knuckles.
Dark marks on his throat stood out against his now pale skin. Something tensed inside her, but she couldn’t look away. Lloyd closed the door behind her as Kai finished his pizza, wiping his fingers on his already dirty jacket.
“Okay, you got me back.” He said with exhausted irritation. “You don’t need to keep following me around.” Kai gestured exasperatedly.
“Yes, we do.” Nya put her hands on her hips, keeping her voice firm as she took a few more steps toward him.
“I already said no.” Kai’s voice was low. “Just go back to that empty monastery and train or something…” Lloyd shifted awkwardly beside her.
“Please Kai, we’re worried about you.” It had been years since she’d last said something like that to him, probably since the last time he was overworking himself in the shop.
“Well stop worrying, I’m fine.” He insisted, crossing his arms.
“No, you’re not.” Lloyd said, stepping forward and meeting his gaze. Kai’s shoulders tightened uncomfortably.
Nya spoke softer now, “We need you Kai, the team…” His expression hardened.
“Shut up about the team.” Kai stood up, still a little off balance. It was like the fire had been reignited inside him. “It’s your fault too with Jay and Cole!”
“Really? That’s a low blow coming from a guy who was so reckless on that mission.” Nya yelled back. Her heart beat faster, surprised he was still arguing. Was it the alcohol?
“Yeah well…you barely helped!” Kai pointed a finger at her then gestured to them both where they stood a few feet away. “And now you two are just butting into my business and coming into my apartment and---" Nya clenched her jaw and was about to respond when Lloyd shouted.
“Guys, please stop!” Lloyd stood up straighter, attempting to look as commanding as he could. “I’m just as upset about Zane and the situation as you are.” He took a deep breath. “Getting mad at each other won’t solve anything.” Lloyd looked pointedly at the arguing duo. “Is this what Zane would want? Us fighting?” Nya crossed her arms, annoyed and grateful at the same time for Lloyd’s mediation. He’d lately been sounding older and wiser than he should.
Kai’s eyes were locked on the floor, considering his words.
“Zane’s gone.” The muscles in his jaw were tight and his eyes shone with the beginnings of tears. But the coldness of his voice only lasted a moment longer. He looked up, finally facing them.
“He’s not coming back and there’s nothing we can do to fix it!” Kai roared. “There’s no more team, he’s gone.” He spat, eyes becoming redder to match the bruise on his jaw. “Now stop trying to fix my problems and leave me alone!”
By now, Nya’s anger was boiling, it coursed through her like a raging storm. They’d spent weeks trying to find him and watching out for him and he didn’t even want their help. Why did he have to be this stubborn? Couldn’t he see what he was doing to himself? A wave of emotion stirred in her chest, raw and painful. Nya clenched her fists as the beginnings of tears appeared in her eyes.
“No! I don’t want you throwing your life away.” She yelled. Her eyes were dangerously close to spilling now but her words still came out fiery. “I don’t want to worry about hearing that my brother drank himself to death or lost a fight or—”
“Well, I should’ve! It should’ve been me.” Kai snapped. There was something hollow behind the rage in his eyes.
“Stop making this about yourself! This is just like with you wanting to be the green ninja.” Lloyd cut in firmly, disappointment mixing with anger, but it was nothing compared to the anger of his siblings. Nya watched as his words finally reached Kai’s ears.
“I’m the one making it all about me—I’m the one being selfish now?!” Fire pulsed within him, resentment ringing in his voice. “I gave up everything for you two. You know that!” He stepped closer to Lloyd and Nya. There was still a wobble in his step. “For you with not being the green ninja—” He pointed at Nya. “And especially you Nya, everything I did for you… when we were kids, everything, all that work so you could be happy.” He punctuated his words with a snarl.
Nya’s heart tensed at the words. She’d never heard Kai complain about any of that before, never expected there could be any resentment.
“Why won’t you let me do one thing for myself?” Kai demanded, stepping toward her. She could still smell the alcohol on his breath. A wave of emotion rose again.
“Because this is stupid Kai!” Nya cried. “I won’t watch you do this to yourself.” Kai’s eyes narrowed dangerously.
“Then don’t watch.”
Kai’s voice was cold and final. Nya wanted to scream, wanted to scream something so loud that would fix this. But she didn’t know how. Machines were easy, take one apart, rearrange the pieces, fix what’s wrong. People were so much harder. She watched as Kai started to turn back to the couch.
“Trying to kill yourself won’t bring Zane back.”
Lloyd’s voice echoed in the small room.
He was met with silence, the lack of response only confirming the green ninja’s words. Nya felt something painful clench in her chest but had nothing more to say. She would always remember the empty look in his eyes. The chipped paint and empty bottles watched; it was like they were all waiting for someone to make their move.
Finally, Kai spoke. “If you really cared you’d leave me alone.” The words were softer than before yet still venomous. “You’re only making everything worse.” He didn’t look either of them in the eyes.
“Fine.” Nya stuck her chin out. “Let’s go Lloyd.”
“But—”
“We can’t help that ungrateful, drunk—” Nya stopped herself before she got carried away. She took a deep breath, trying to steel her expression. “We can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.”
Nya turned on her heel, dragging Lloyd out with her as she slammed the door. Kai still wouldn’t look at her. He remained frozen, hair hanging limply, injuries almost looking pitiful.
Nya took a few steps down the hall before slumping down, hands on her knees. She didn’t know what to think, she didn’t know what to do. The storm inside her released. Lloyd sat down beside her and rested his head on his arms. Nya carefully wiped her tears.
“I don’t want to lose another brother.” Lloyd’s voice was small and lacked all the confidence it had before. His words felt like a knife in her chest.
“We won’t.” Nya said instinctively. She wrapped an arm around Lloyd’s shoulder, pulling him closer. She could see tears forming in his eyes and wished she could fix it like everything else. They ignored the sound of glass breaking behind the thin wall they were huddled against.
Nya hugged Lloyd tighter. They would get through this, they would stop Kai somehow, she would—a pair of keys rested on the ground by the apartment door. Maybe there was a way to help him.

Impact - CH 2
Reach CH 1 here, also it is on Ao3!
The next day I was walking in the MPs headquarters with a newfound bounciness on my feet. I had partied the night away with my squad. Finn and Gerald were the more enthusiastic ones since they blamed themselves for being late when Kai and Nick had tried to assassinate me. They were supposed to be quicker than Smith and his men since if they could be the ones that save my life Harold would let them stay in his mansion and in turn, they would help me to find the documents he had got arrested for. Nick and Kai, being bought up by the MPs to play that part were now moving far away from Wall Sina, pockets full of money. Harold on the other hand was awaiting trial. But that was not a topic I would like to dwell on. Especially when my head was turning with victory. As I came to stand in front of the Commander’s door, I smiled slightly at the guards waiting on his door and knocked down twice.
“Come in,” I let myself in when heard Nile’s permission. He was sitting on his big desk, head buried in parchments and a distressed look on his face. He left his eyes to look at me.
“Hello commander,” I greeted him giddily. He didn’t smile causing my own smile to fall from my face.
“What is wrong?” He tried to smile at my question as if to reassure me but I could see the way he tried to hide his flinch.
“Nile? What is wrong?” I demanded more sternly and he got out of his seat, holding his hands up as if in surrender.
“Now, don’t get mad,” he started but I had already started doing so. This couldn’t be good.
“I talked to the superiors this morning, and they didn’t seem to approve your promotion nor your application for other missions.” All the happiness I had been feeling since yesterday night evaporated. I watched as Nile’s face crumped at the sight of my own. He murmured my name as he took a step toward me. “No, I – wait, why not?” I hated the way my voice came out, but my throat had closed off and I wanted answers quickly, I didn’t have the patience to wait to calm down. I had worked my ass off for this for years.
“Please, calm down.” Nile urged me but shut his mouth when I shot him a glare. He sighed.
“I will talk to them, yeah? We will work this out, I promise. I will do everything in my power to get you what you deserved.”
“One would suppose you have enough power to do so since you are the commander,” I spitted out, and even though I instantly regretted bringing his powerlessness toward the higher-ups – being the inner circle of the King – I didn’t let it stop me from lashing out.
“You know things are not working like that,” Nile said, now cold and annoyed.
“And you know I’m trying to change all this!” I said, barely keeping my voice down. My arms flared around me as he looked at me as if I was nine years old. “You can’t change things with the snap of your fingers; you should have learned that already,”
“How dare you? Snap of my fingers?! – I work day and night so that the terrible reputation MPs get would be renewed!”
“I know,” he said, softening. “And you did a good job. The heroics of MPs are the only thing people are talking about since yesterday.” I didn’t say anything as I was trying to swallow the frustrated tears back. Thankfully, I had mastered keeping a cold façade. Still, Nile came closer to me and encircled me in his arms.
“I appreciate the things you have done. I’m proud of you, I really do. And I will get that promotion for you. Okay?” he said as he was hugging me. I only nodded as I couldn’t bring myself to speak and hugged my brother back. Even if we both didn’t quite believe that he would be able to do what he had promised.
It took four strolls on the ground to calm my boiling blood. Still, I had to think something else because as soon as I started thinking about the unfairness of it all I started fuming all over again; especially since all I was trying to do was to clear the corrupt name of the MPs. I entered the room that was assigned to store the junk we had found in Harold’s mansion. After yesterday the place was busting with boxes, documents, and old-looking family heirlooms. My squad was already in the room. Investigating the objects.
“Anything useful?” I watched as Finn and Gerald jumped, Fran the only other woman in the squad beside me casually turned to greet me with a smile. “You cannot believe the evidence we have found. Even the King himself couldn’t get the man out of rope,” Finn said after clearing his throat, trying to hide the way I caught him off-guard.
“But you already know this, captain!” Gerald added. I only smiled as I took a seat beside Fran. I knew Harold was a horrid excuse of a human. Still, he had never shown that side of him to me explicitly. He was always kind, generous, and loving. My head was having a hard time trying to connect the two very opposite sides of this same man.
“We also found some old relics that were probably stolen from churches of Sina, back in the day,” Gerald said a few moments later, tilting his head toward the table on my left. A shiny grey vase was sitting on top of it.
“We should add smuggling in his case,” Finn said as he took a pen in his hand as if to readying himself to do just that.
“First we need to prove it was stolen, dumbass,” Fran said across the table we were sitting on. “I also found some old books about the world beyond the Walls,” Gerald told me after rolling his eyes as Fran and Finn started bickering as usual. I smiled at them as I had missed them over the months I was undercover before turning my attention to Gerald.
“Let me see,” I said and he placed the books in my open hands. They were heavier than they looked. “Could we add possession of illegal books to his case?” Fran asked leaving Finn in middle-argument.
“Is it really illegal though?” Finn asked.
“What do you mean?” Gerald turned him with a lifted eyebrow.
“I mean I always thought everyone has those in their homes. We used to have one.”
“You shouldn’t say that in public,” Fran said with laughter in her voice. Finn shrugged a shoulder and turned his attention to me.
“What about you, captain? Did you have one in your family home?”
“I believe I teach you better in the art of elicitation,” I told him dryly as I passed the pages of the book. In the periphery of my eye, I saw Gerald smack Finn’s arm, what kind of a question was that, idiot? I tuned them out as I looked at the pictures in the book. I hadn’t need to read the information written neatly beside them as I had already read this book before.
The first time I encountered a book about the outside world I had only been ten. They were stacked on the back of a remote shelf on the bookcase in my father’s study. I doubted he ever opened the cover of any of them. I thought he only had them to prove that he could, to feel powerful. I remembered the times I snuck out of my bed at night to read them for hours on end. Terrified at the thought of being caught, delighted to be doing something that is forbidden, and cold with only my night garments on in the frozen nights of a particularly harsh winter. I remembered how I tried to pinpoint the edges of the world by looking at the sky, day and night. How it seemed to me that it was clear that there was more land than we had within the walls. Wondered what was beyond them. Fascinated by the ideas in these books. I wanted to get out of my home. I wanted to get out of Wall Sina. I wanted to get out of the walls altogether. Feeling the need to fight to achieve this end. The need to eliminate the threats to my freedom. The need to fight titans to gain exactly that. Instead, I chose to join the stuffy Military Police, believing that to gain the freedom I desperately craved, I had to resolve the issues from within. Believing that I could regenerate the legion.
Or maybe I just made myself believe all those things because I was too much of a coward to go against the wishes of my family.
I slammed the book shut with frustration, and threw it to the side. My squad went silent around me.
“Let’s get serious,” I said as an explanation, and they went back to work without any comment on my part. As the day ended, the case we were gathering against Harold was now six pages long, we got to our feet, calling the day’s end. And as my whole squad was quitting the room, their attentions were elsewhere, I slipped the book inside my shirt, securing it around my belts. Harold already had enough to get charged with a lifetime six times. A few illegal books missing wouldn’t affect his case even in the slightest.
A week had passed before Nile went to another meeting with ‘the higher-ups’. I spent my days training myself, training my squad, and polishing the case against Harold. It was now fifteen pages long, and with every new sentence we got to add, I felt my stomach convulsed with nausea. I spent months with this man. I let him hold me. I kissed him. I nearly gagged. I punched the bag in front of me harder. Trying to apply as much force as I could so that I wouldn’t have to think about Nile and higher-ups, the promotion I needed to take a step further in my plans to renovate the Military Police, Harold, and all the horrid things he had done, and only focused on the pain on my hands, my arms, my shoulders. Drops of sweat trailed down my face, and the roots of my hair were soaking wet. I only stopped when my shoulder cramped so badly that I was sure I had dislocated it. It took five minutes for me to be able to start moving it again. Even then, it was sore and aching. I gave up and hit the showers.
Under the spraying warm water, I massaged my shoulder before rubbing my skin with flowery soaps. Although I didn’t feel up to it I scrubbed my skin with heavenly scented oils, a habit I had gained during my time in my old family house in Wall Sina. I towel-dried my hair and tried to shape it with my fingers. When I was satisfied and couldn’t help the anticipation anymore I got out of the showers to go wait for Nile.
In his office, I invited myself to use his coffee stash and had my coffee with a bit of milk with no sugar. The warm drink calmed my nerves a bit and for that, I was grateful. I was going through his library when I heard footsteps approaching. I looked to the side, to the door, to see who it was. Nile entered the room and saw me instantly. My stomach dropped from the solemn look on his face. But maybe he was fooling me, right? As a prank, like he liked to do when we were children. He liked pulling on unnecessary, and unfunny, pranks on me. That might be a prank too… right? He looked me dead in the eyes.
“I’m sorry,” was the only thing he said.
“Be honest,” I said inviting him to quit if he was joking around. He smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry,” he said again and opened up his arms for me to walk in. I kissed him on the cheek and went out of the door. His arms remained open and empty.
My unicorn-embodied cloak was fluttering behind me as I was walking toward the commander’s office. The soldiers around me were looking at me with suspicious eyes. Out of all the people in the Walls, soldiers or civilians, the corps was the most irritated ones toward MPs. I tried to rationalize to myself that it is with a good reason.
“Commander is waiting for you,” said a dark-haired soldier, a hand on the doorknob of the commander’s office. I thanked him with a smile and he opened the door for me. His hair was as nice combed as it was the first time I had seen him. I wondered how much time he spent on it each day. He was standing in front of his desk, arms folded behind his back. I noticed the two men, Miche and Levi, were in the room as well as a woman with glasses. The commander smiled kindly.
“Captain. I didn’t expect to see you,” he said as a way of greeting, “Would you like to sit down?”
“No, I don’t,” I said, suddenly irritated as I remembered the night they interfere with my operation though they might have a good reason. “You almost ruined months’ worth of operation,” I couldn’t help but said to him since I wanted to make him feel bad. Though I had my doubts that he was capable. He smiled that annoying smile of his again.
“My apologies. Although I really did believe your life was in jeopardy.” This time it was me who smiled.
“I never doubted that you did think that. However, I find it hard to believe that you happened to learn about the assassination plan that night and not days before.” Something shone in his eyes but before he could answer the short man, Levi – I reminded myself, cut in.
“Tch. Did you really come all this way to share your ridiculous speculations? Is it that hard to thank us for saving your ass?” I kept my eye level on the commander’s height and looked around. As the short captain appear in my periphery, my eyes went over his head just to return back and down.
“Oh! Here you are! I wondered where the voice was coming from!” I said overly cheerful and saw the woman in glasses snap her head between the two of us as if to watch a tennis match that I had seen once the nobility played when I was a child.
“Very clever. Never heard of that before,” Captain Levi deadpanned with arms folded over his chest.
"Voices might not reach down there,” I mumbled and his eyes narrowed dangerously. We both turned when the commander cleared his throat.
“Levi, Miche, Hange. Didn’t you have things to do?”
“No,” the woman, Hange, piped up but got to her feet when the Commander turned to give her a look. They piled out of the room, closing the door, and leaving me alone with the Commander. I couldn’t pinpoint what but felt something change in the air. I coughed up a little to get rid of the feeling and reached beneath my shirt. Freed what was hidden there I looked up to Commander Erwin. He was watching my every move with calculated cold eyes, arms still folded in his back.
“What is this?” he asked simply. I walked toward his desk, standing beside him. He didn’t move but kept continue watching me. He locked his eyes to mine over his shoulder as I put down the book on his desk, and took a step back. Only then did he lower his eyes to the books. I watched as his eyebrows knitted together.
“I believe you have already read one of these, but I still thought it belonged with the Survey Corps,” I said as an explanation. He turned toward the book, opening the cover.
“Is this a trap?” he asked coldly, knowing fully well that these books were illegal.
“Don’t underestimate me,” I told him “If I wanted to trap you, I would pull something much more elegant.” He turned his attention back to me and smiled again but this time it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Well, thank you then. Anything else?” I clenched my jaw. Couldn’t quite believe what I was doing.
“I read it,” I said instead, more defensively than I intended to. I was trying to stall, to gain some more time. He seemed to realize but didn’t call me out on it.
“Did you like it?” he asked kindly. It only irritated me more.
“I want to go out,” I blurted out. I was aware that I wasn’t making much sense and probably sound like a lunatic. I was jumping between conversations and expecting him to keep up with the flow of my mind.
“Go out where?” he asked, eyebrows rising, surprised by the change of topics.
“Go out of the walls. I have always wanted that.” I let the words sink and watched as the gears in his mind turned.
“Are you applying to join the Corps?” My heart was beating so fast in my chest. My palms were sweaty and I was trying to make it look like my breathing was steady even though there wasn’t enough air in my lungs and my head was getting dizzy with the lack of air.
“Yes,” I answered with a whisper and mentally slapped my forehead. This wasn’t how I imagined for it to go. He looked at me as if he was seeing me for the first time.
Evaluating me. Time flowed by.
I didn’t take my eyes off of his. I felt like I was blushing underneath my shirt, I was hot all over with dread and anticipation.
He smiled, and hold his hand out for me.
“I accept your application,” he said. As simple as that. I looked at his hand hanging in the air. Thought of all the times I dreamed of joining the Corps and how I made myself believe joining the Military Police would be better in the end. How I worked so hard for them, clawing my way up the ranks with my nails, teeth, and blood. How they let me down over and over again. How did this idea of switching legions start growing in my head the first time Nile had said the higher-ups rejected my promotion. Walking all over my achievements as they always did. How I spent these last weeks nurturing this idea, the thing I was about to do. How much it excited me. How much I wanted it. Have always wanted it.
I placed my hand inside the Commander’s open one. His fingers encircled mine and he gave it a firm squeeze. My heart missed a beat with the realization of what I was doing.
I squeezed back.

Soooo I had an idea
Hi, I really like SPBNR. I absolutely love it! I found it when you posted ch 1 (btw congrats on being the top ninjago fic) and loved it and I kept coming back to read it whenever you post a new chapter. I love your characterization of the characters and I have no idea where your gonna go with this.
So my brain likes to come up with what ifs, how the story could possibly go. There’s been one idea that’s kinda stuck and I would like to know if you’re okay if I write it and post it.
Basically, my idea is this, S!Lloyd ends up in the movieverse with Smith(Kai) and Smith has to take care of him and train him on top of everything else. I can see S!Lloyd getting there by himself by a multitude of way.
         - First one Garmadon wishes while holding the staff that he didn’t hve to fight his son and that he would be safe, the Megaweapon decided sending him to S!Kai in the Movieverse was the best option (then Garmadon freaks out when he realizes Lloyd’s missing)
         - Second Lloyd being the obedient gremlin he is, sneaks off on the ultradragon to try to find Kai blaming himself for his disappearance and somehow he falls off the dragon and with his Oni/Dragon DNA he makes a realm portal to the movieverse (it could technically be posssible as the show hasn’t really shown any hits of this, I just thought it would be a fun idea to explore)  as he falls and he ends up there alone for a bit until he finds Kai (him being Shogun and probably appearing on the news would let Lloyd know he’s there, even if he’s confused about the other ninja
I think Smith trying to take care of Lloyd and maybe give him a childhood with limited supplies and little Lloyd meeting and hanging with the M!ninja (them freaking out about Smith taking care of a little kid and they all want to adopt him)
I’ve been thinking about writing this, but I don’t want to steal your ideas, so I won’t without your okay. (I also have no idea if you’ve thought of doing this or not, it doesn’t seem so… but it’s your story)
—————–
Ooooooooooo heck yeah!!!
Personally, I’m voting the first one since it would only add a bigger layer of panic for the S!Ninja, and also a bigger amount of panic for Smith and how he’ll explain it to the M!Ninja that his little brother is here now.....for some reason
But he’d get into so much chaos, being the little Gremlin he is. Though the M!Ninja still fall in love with him and Monty is soon added to the Custody War

Nova Ch 4
AN: Just in time for the A!countdown! Looking forward to those sneak peeks next month!
Ch 4: Extraterrestrial
New Selenian Date 3015.4.21
Though our voyage through space was more volatile than I expected, we’ve successfully approached Terra’s exosphere. Under other circumstances, it would be cause for celebration, but…
Well, Snowball has only spoken to me for essentials during the past few days. Usually so he can update me while he raids the pantry for maza or to catch up on sleep.
Our argument has only served as a reminder that we’re not…as united in our mutual goal as much I want to believe.
It must the length of the journey. Access to only four rooms in a one week period can give anyone a serious case of cabin fever. He’ll get better once we land on Terra’s surface, I’m sure.
Signing off for now, the Brain.
o-o-o-o-o
Was it really April 21? Pinky hurried to the Mickey Mouse calendar pinned to the wall next to his cage. He really loved that picture of Mickey giving flowers to a blushing Minnie. They really were the perfect couple!
Pinky imitated Mickey’s pose, dropping down on one knee as if he was offering a bouquet of pretty daffodils…wait, no those were lilies. He rubbed his head, confused by the yellow flowers in the picture. Maybe it was the type with the really long name.
What was it again? Ah, yes! A lovely bouquet of Chris-and-his-moms for Minnie!
Egad, the picture was so pretty that he’d forgotten about the reminder he’d penciled in the box for April 21!
“Granny Smith at 9 pm?” Pinky tilted his head, trying to make sense of what he’d written. He didn’t know any grannies that well, nor did he know any Smiths. Besides, Pharfignewton was leaving the ranch tonight at 9 pm, and he was going to see her off before she was off to the races. “Poit! Oh yeah, the apple! An apple a day keeps the vets away!”
Pharfignewton needed the energy for the journey too. Kentucky was a long way from California. About nine inches according to his placemat of the United States.
Before he left, he needed to leave a response for his space pen pal. But they weren’t exactly using pens. Maybe space radio pals was better.
Pinky went back to the Walkman. It made a bunch of crackling noises, like the Brain hadn’t turned his equipment off yet.
“Hi, the Brain!” Pinky grinned. The was such a funny first name. “Glad you could make it to Earth! Or Terra! Whatever you wanna call it! Wherever you land, I hope you and Snowball enjoy yourselves. Definitely try strawberry cheesecake sometime. It’s delicious!”
The static continued.
“Anyway, Pharfignewton’s leaving for the Kentucky Derby tonight, so I can’t chat for long. Maybe tomorrow? I’ll spend twice as much time talking to you tomorrow! Fig’s been practicing super extra hard. She’s gonna win the Derby and get that Triple Crown! That’s her dream, you know! Dreams are a wish your heart makes, zort! Cinderella said so!”
Pinky put his hand over the Walkman’s speaker. “Your dream is taking over Terra, and mine is being surrounded by cheese from around the world! Or maybe that’s just my stomach. I can never tell for sure.”
The clock chimed eight, its little pendulum swinging to and fro in a dizzying pattern.
He had to say goodbye now.
And say goodbye again later.
“Alright…well, I’ll let you go. I bet you have some important Conquesowhatsit things to do. Bye, the Brain. Glad you could make it to Terra. You and Snowball are gonna love it. Ooh, there I go again. Bye for real this time.” Pinky slowly turned the dial down, past tinny classical and pop music stations, until the Walkman was off.
Dreams were always nice, even if Pharfignewton and the Brain had to travel far away to make them come true. Pinky’s parents were probably making their own dream of eating gourmet food pellets real as well. Sis didn’t have one yet. She was still torn between professional hairdressing and getting a cooking show on Food Network, but she was young and had plenty of time to grow up.
Now that he thought about it, maybe Sis was right. He didn’t have to decide on a dream for himself yet. Well, surrounding himself with provolone, cheddar, mozzarella, camembert, and all the other yummy cheeses was still a wonderful dream for now.
“A world of cheeses, deliciously made for you and me…” Pinky sang, the air conditioner providing a nice background instrumental as he went to the breakroom to fetch Pharfignewton’s apple.
o-o-o-o-o
Carting the Granny Smith apple to the ranch took more time than Pinky imagined. Running on his wheel along with those upper body strength VHS tapes helped him for most of the trek, but there’d still been one scary moment where he’d leaned back too far to see the pretty full moon. Luckily, the apple wasn’t too bruised from tumbling downhill.
By the time Pinky arrived, Pharfignewton was already in her horse trailer. Her owner sat on a nearby bench, his brow furrowed as his thumbs tapped rapidly on his cell phone. A white pick-up truck sat in front of the trailer, though the latch to connect the vehicles hadn’t been hooked yet.
The door to Pharfignewton’s trailer was wide open, the ramp still on the ground. Delays were good. It meant he could hold off on saying goodbye a little longer.
“Fig, I got you an apple! A sweet and healthy Granny Smith!” Pinky exclaimed as he ran up the ramp. Before he could get to the top, Pharfignewton bent down and grasped the apple in her teeth, nearly chomping down on Pinky’s hands as she lifted her head. Pinky’s feet left the ground, and he gripped the apple with both hands, almost sliding off the smooth surface.
He couldn’t resist a tiny nibble. Pharfignewton wouldn’t mind.
Pinky climbed onto her muzzle just as the apple was crunched into mush. Pharfignewton whinnied in delight, her eyes shut from sheer happiness. He stroked the fur between her eyes and hummed Camptown Races because it was her favorite song. She always got excited to race when she heard it.
Pharfignewton’s hooves clopped against the floor rhythmically, her head bobbing up and down.
“-gonna run all night! Gonna run all day!” Pinky sang, grabbing her soft mane and hauling himself up. He clung to her ears for balance. “I’ll bet my money here on Fig, cause she’s gonna win this May!”
Pharfignewton neighed, her tail raised proudly.
Her owner looked up from his phone. His bushy beard quivered as he chuckled and waved at her. A van pulled up to the curb, the window sliding down to reveal a man in a funny white cowboy hat. The owner shouted and pointed to the newcomer’s hat.
“What a fashion icon, Fig! Rodeo style hats at the Kentucky Derby. Why didn’t I think of that?” Pinky asked. “Egad, I need to make my own hat for the Derby! A derby hat! With fancy ribbons and dandelions and those little beads on sombreros!”
Cowboy Man clapped the owner on the shoulder as he climbed out of his van, the owner playfully shoving him in return. The back doors of the van were opened, and they started loading the pile of heavy feed bags and horse care equipment into the hollowed out space, trading good-natured jabs while they worked.
Pinky glanced at the starry night sky, scratching the back of Pharfignewton’s ear. “I almost forgot. The Brain made it to Terra. He said so in his message tonight. Told him he should try strawberry cheesecake. I don’t know if they have that in space.”
Pharfignewton snorted.
“Oh, you and your homemade apple strudel,” Pinky grinned. “Tell you what. Win the Triple Crown and I’ll bake the most scrumptious, most mouthwateringest apple strudel you’ve had in your life! Oh wait, no, how ‘bout I just bake it when you come back? Whenever that will be. Maybe soon?”
However long she’d be gone, Pinky hoped she’d call or write or keep in touch some other way. Well, sending a postcard might be a little tricky with hooves. How was she ever gonna apply the stamps?
Pharfignewton neighed, her front hooves knocking against the floor in worry.
“I’ll be okay, Fig. I can wait ‘til August. There’s lots of fun things to do in the summer. Like playing water polo, air hockey, capture the flag...”
Except those games all needed two players.
And while Monopoly game pieces and dominoes made for great substitutes when he couldn’t round up the checkers and marbles, it just wouldn’t be the same without Pharfignewton.
Pinky’s tail started to cramp.
He hadn’t realized he’d wrung it between his hands so hard. It wasn’t the fun sort of pain either.
Outside, the men finished loading their supplies. The van doors were shut, and Pharfignewton’s trailer was hitched to the truck.
Their boots loudly thumped against the ground with every step.
Pinky slid down Pharfignewton’s long muzzle, his feet resting against the back of her nostrils. He gripped her face and looked at those gorgeous blue eyes. They were the same shade as his turquoise crayon. He wanted to remember that.
Pinky rested his jaw on Pharfignewton’s fur, trying to keep the tiny quaver out of his voice. “Well…guess this is it, huh?” he murmured. “You have a good trip now. You’re the best racehorse I’ve ever met. Course I don’t know any other racehorses, but you’re gonna win the Derby, Fig. I know you will. Just keep in touch, ‘kay?”
She knickered softly, her breath stirring Pinky’s fur as she lowered him to the ground outside her trailer. Her breath smelled just like applesauce. She carefully rubbed the underside of her jaw against Pinky’s head, nuzzling away tears that made his vision a little blurry, then slowly raised herself to her majestic height.
“Poit. Really, Fig.” Pinky tilted his head back so the tears just pooled in his eyes instead of trailing down his cheeks. “You’ve got a dream ahead of you.”
Pharfignewton stomped her hoof.
But Pinky shook his head. True, he could go with her, but who was gonna keep his cage clean and his wheel oiled if he wasn’t around? Besides, Pharfignewton would have so many new horse friends. She was gonna be a celebrity by association.
Pinky wiped a tear away with his tail. “I don’t wanna distract you or anything. Meet someone new! Who knows? You might even be fast friends!”
Then Cowboy Man and the owner walked past, too engrossed in their conversation to notice Pinky. Pharfignewton craned her neck, trying to see above Cowboy Man while he folded the ramp. Before she could reply, her owner gently shooed her further into the trailer while Cowboy Man finished up.
Once the trailer door was shut and locked, the owner and Cowboy Man took some time to stroke Pharfignewton’s face. The window bars were wide enough to allow almost her entire muzzle through.
They promised good things for her, win or lose. She’d be eating her fill of apples and carrots for sure.
She’d be happy out there, running like the wind to her heart’s content.
Ten minutes later, Cowboy Man drove away in his supply van. Pharfignewton’s owner started up the truck.
Pinky quickly climbed up a fencepost and waved to Pharfignewton, wishing he’d brought along a handkerchief to blow his nose into or flutter in the air like a proper movie goodbye.
Pharfignewton stretched her neck as far as she could.
“Bye! Adios! Sayonara!” Pinky called, cupping his hands as the truck slowly inched onto the side road’s pavement. The trailer turned slightly with the movement, and Pinky quickly hopped to a fencepost within Pharfignewton’s line of sight.
She looked happy enough to get the show on the road, but her whinnies were still worried.
He had to cheer her up! She couldn’t travel to Kentucky with that frowny face!
“Camptown ladies! Sing this song! Narf!” Pinky panted, taking only a moment to catch his breath, the song choppy as he ran the length of the fence. But even with the truck’s slow crawl, he couldn’t keep up, and the truck disappeared over the hill, pulling the trailer and Pharfignewton along with it.
He didn’t slow down in time. Pinky stumbled over the last fencepost and fell into the springy grass below. The thud knocked his breath away for just a moment, but he shook it off quickly.
It was nothing really.
“Camptown racetrack’s fi-five thousand miles away…”
Pharfignewton shouldn’t worry.
He had the small, boxy TV that the lab couldn’t afford to upgrade to a flat screen. The NBC channel always showed the Derby.
And it was enough for him.
o-o-o-o-o
Had the stars always been that far away? They seemed much lonelier than usual.
Pinky tilted his head as far as he could, taking in the navy sky above. There was no moon and no way to spot the Brain’s old home tonight. He was probably somewhere on Earth by now.
Paris was nice at this time of year. Maybe the Brain would get all the cheese and baguettes he could eat. The city of light and love was absolutely splendid and heavenly. Pinky had never been there, but the landscape seemed so pretty at night in Ratatouille. Parisian rodents must be excellent chefs. Pinky would have to find one someday.
If only he could walk into a giant cabinet that would magically transport him to a riverboat cruise on the Seine. He’d only gotten a mouthful of cobweb the last time he’d tried that.
Oh dear.
Pinky twirled in place, taking in the enormous apartment complex to his left and the grassy hillside across the street, both of which he didn’t recognize.
“Narf! Silly me.” Pinky bonked his fist against his noggin, leaving a slight ache behind.  “One of these days, I’ll definitely remember that ol’ left turn on Albuquerque Street!”
Well, the only thing he had to do was retrace his steps.
But he didn’t have sidewalk chalk or a pencil.
Pinky scratched his head. This was a lot harder than he thought. He was outside, so he couldn’t exactly follow the left wall of the maze until he got un-lost.
His stomach growled, and he had a sudden craving for between-twilight-and-midnight food pellets.
“Hush now, tummy. You’ll get your food pellets as soon as I find the lab again,” Pinky said, patting his growling belly.
A bowl of smoked food pellets seasoned with paprika and rosemary sounded good right about now. With a side of smoked cheddar too!
Pinky laughed. “You’ve really got a craving for smoked food, tummy! Can’t blame you there. Those smoked chicken wings on Food Network were absolutely mouthwatering yesterday. I’m so hungry I can smell those food pellets!”
And the food pellets smelled delicious indeed.
Pinky took a deep whiff, standing on his tippy-toes to drink it all in.
Until the scent changed and it smelled more oily than the yummy sort of smoke.
Pinky’s nose wrinkled. A faint plume of smoke rose from behind the grassy hill, but it was still a little early in the year for anyone to hold a campfire sing-along with s’mores.
There didn’t seem to be a fire. Or slightly burnt marshmallows for that matter.
Curiosity getting the better of him, Pinky crossed the street at the crosswalk because he was a good pedestrian and not a jaywalker. That was just silly. He was a mouse, not a blue jay.
He ran to the top of the hill and perched on a tree root, heels rocking back and forth for a moment until he found his balance. Then his jaw dropped at the sight of a gray and silver futuristic-y UFO just beyond the hill’s base. It had to be the size of two cages combined, maybe a little more.
He wasn’t really good at judging size, but the UFO thingy was ginormous.
Dirt piled high around its battered surface, like it plowed right into the ground at Pharfignewton-like speeds. Smoke trailed from two long cylinders that arched above its back, though there were no flames.
At least Smokey the Bear wouldn’t have to worry about any wildfires.
Pinky approached the wreckage, circling it twice out of sheer fascination. He didn’t see any string though. No wonder the UFO crashed. It didn’t have any string to hold it up.
“Hello, Mr. Alien!” Pinky shouted, hoping his voice carried through the metal to whoever was inside. He leaned against the UFO with both hands, placing all his body weight on his tiptoes. It felt great. He hadn’t stretched his shoulders like this in a while. All his focus had been going to strengthening his thighs recently. “I just wanted to let you know that your UFO string is missing! But it’s okay! I have an extra long ball of yarn back at the lab! Will that do?”
There was no response, though Pinky heard a plip-plop of dripping water when he pressed his ear against the UFO.
Suddenly, the metal hissed and shifted under his palms.
“Narf!” Pinky yelped as he pitched forward into the opening. His jaw thwacked against the floor, and he giggled at the tingly sensations that shot to the top of his head.
Propping himself onto his elbows, Pinky found himself in a room that was just as big on the inside as it seemed on the outside. Except everything seemed a little smashed up. Broken computers tilted against one wall, the screens cracked and displaying a random string of numbers and letters.
Orange soda dripped from an open panel to his left, forming a bubbly puddle on the floor. Pinky almost drank it, but figured it was a terrible idea because of the little metal bits mixed in. Orange soda went with pizza, not metal.
Pinky stood up and dusted himself off, then walked over to what seemed to be a smashed-up bedframe. There was an upturned mattress and a crumpled white blanket next to it. When he tried to turn them over and arrange them into a less messy position, he found they were rather scratchy and definitely uncomfortable for sleeping in. Whoever used this bed must’ve woken up every morning with a backache the size of Alaska.
As he tucked the last corner of the blanket into the mattress, several tiny blue things slipped out from the folds and bounced off his foot. When Pinky glanced down, he found there were a lot of tiny blue things scattered throughout the room.
He picked one up out of curiosity.
No, it wasn’t a thing. More like a tiny blue star. He touched it with his tongue, a sweet flavor taking over his taste buds entirely. It really packed a wallop. His tongue hadn’t felt this tingly since the time he’d eaten two entire packs of lemonheads! He popped several more tiny stars into his mouth, hugging himself from sheer bliss.
For a moment, it seemed like there was another voice agreeing with him on how fantastically delicious these tiny stars were.
Then it cut into a low groan, which didn’t sound like someone enjoying a snack at all. Pinky quickly swallowed the tiny stars and listened for the source of the noise.
“Narf! Hello?” Pinky called. “Are you an alien ghost? Or a ghost alien, Mr. Alien?”
Another groan. Maybe Mr. Alien didn’t know how to play Twenty Questions.
One of the computers shifted and crashed onto its side, a blue screen flickering in and out of existence. Parts of the splintered bedframe laid among the mess. A small, black-gloved hand poked out from among the tangled wires before falling limp again.
Pinky poked the hand.
It twitched.
“Awful hard to sleep under all those wires, don’t you think?” Pinky asked. “I mean, it would be so electric-y under there! Unless you’re an android ghost alien! Electric sheep only works for androids, I think. The rest of us count woolly, fluffy sheep.”
The mass of wires trembled, the hand closing around Pinky’s wrist. Though it was probably meant to be a tight grasp, it wasn’t a very good hold. A single movement could shake off the alien’s hand.
But Pinky stayed still. Something didn’t seem quite right.
The alien lifted his head, a pair of antennae with bouncy red orbs perking slightly.
Antennae was a good name now that he thought about it.
“N-no’all?” Antennae murmured, the wires slipping off his large, chubby head. His bleary pink eyes stared through Pinky with desperate hope. Soot stained his messy fur with varying shades of gray, his pointed ears drooping and floppy.
“Poit. Do you not speak English?” Pinky asked. Antennae continued to stare, not seeming to understand. “I could get my language book from the lab. It’s got Spanish, French, Sea Lion, and Legalese! I’m learning a lot! Maybe it’s got your language too?”
Then Pinky snapped his fingers. Why hadn’t he thought of this sooner? “Wait, no! Maybe kissing would be much faster? That way my English flows into your mouth and voicebox! Is that how it works? I’m pretty sure that’s how it works…”
Antennae’s grip tightened, his lower half writhing in the wires until he shook himself free. From the neck down, he wore a sleek black bodysuit with red highlights that really made the color of his antennae and tail orbs pop.
Egad, he was tiny. Even Antennae’s antennae barely rose above Pinky’s chin.
Something green and golden glinted in the hand that wasn’t holding onto Pinky. Antennae stumbled as he got to his feet, wincing as he tried to put his weight on his heels. His eyes widened in panic, and he quickly let go Pinky, breathing rapidly as he wrapped both hands around the weapon’s handle.
Balancing on his toes, he shakily pointed the weapon at Pinky. He was trying to shove the red bulb into Pinky’s nose, which was a little rude to be honest, but couldn’t do much more than a light tap.
“Are you okay?” Pinky asked, lifting his head so the bulb wasn’t smushing his nose. “Soot’s not really good for your complexion. Gives you all sorts of pimples and zits. That’s what Dr. Oz says, anyway.”
There were several clicks as Antennae repeatedly pulled a switch on the handle, but nothing happened. It clearly wasn’t working the way he expected. He growled in frustration, lowering his weapon and opening a compartment along the top. Then his eyes flicked to the puddle of orange soda on the floor and back to Pinky.
For the first time, Antennae noticed all the tiny blue stars that littered the ground. He whipped around in surprise, staring since he still didn’t understand, but the sudden movement made him lose his balance. Pinky caught him by the arm before he fell flat on his face.
The weapon slipped out of his grip, clattering to the floor. He cried out and swung his crooked tail into Pinky’s side.
“Zort!” Pinky yelped, more from the literal shock he’d received, than actual pain. His fur stood on end, like he’d just rubbed a balloon against it. When he pressed it down again, several tingling tickles lingered on his hand, making him giggle.
When he looked up, Antennae had limped over to the damaged remains of a shelf. But even walking across the room was too much, and he collapsed again.
The bodysuit had rips along the heels, exposing several painful looking cuts. Pinky couldn’t blame him for trying to stay on his tiptoes, even if it was a very awkward way to walk.
Antennae needed help. Pinky would have to carry him to the lab.
Pinky followed. He knelt and picked up Antennae, who weighed only slightly more than the small batteries Pinky liked to use as weights, since dumbbells were unfortunately too large for him. Antennae loosely held a baggie of the tiny stars close to his chest. There were several ripped baggies surrounding them. This seemed to be the only one that remained whole.
Cradling his head and back, Pinky set the baggie on top of Antennae’s chest, making sure the baggie was sandwiched between them before he set off.
Antennae’s head lolled against Pinky’s neck. The antennae orbs lit up with tiny sparks for just a moment, though Pinky didn’t get another burst of static. They faded back to a normal red within a few seconds.
He seemed…almost relaxed. At least his face wasn’t scrunched anymore.
As Pinky exited the UFO with his bundle, something bonked into the back of his head.
“Ouch!” Pinky nearly dropped Antennae and baggie in surprise. A tiny camera with a spinning propellor zipped into the night sky, recovering from its collision course quickly.
Some sort of alien tech too otherworldly for a regular genetically altered Earth mouse to understand? Pinky longed to ask, but he didn’t want to disturb Antennae.
Besides, he looked adorably pudgy while he slept.
Antennae made a small noise in the back of his throat, but he didn’t seem to be waking up anytime soon.
The camera didn’t matter as much. Not when he just discovered that aliens snored.
Pinky set off for the lab, determined to get the directions right this time.
o-o-o-o-o
Good thing the dark, narrow alley filled with dirty cardboard boxes had been there! Pinky never would’ve known it was a shortcut to the lab if it hadn’t been for that stray cat. It was a miracle that Antennae hadn’t woken up once, or that the baggie survived the chase without any rips or spilling tiny stars.
The cat had given up the chase, deciding that whatever was in the dumpster would be more of a yummy meal.
Really, Pinky didn’t imagine he’d taste too good. He tried to lick his elbow a few times and all he got was a mouthful of fur.
Thankfully, he didn’t have to try to climb up to the mail slot. The door was slightly ajar, just enough for him to squeeze past, even with Antennae’s chubby head.
Pinky shifted his hold to one arm, then grabbed the handle of the nearest drawer to pull them up to the counter. He had to set the baggie down, but Pinky could easily grab it once Antennae was settled comfortably in the cage.
It took a few unsuccessful tries of hauling himself up while holding onto Antennae before he realized it wasn’t going to work.
“Psst, Antennae,” Pinky hummed, gently shaking the alien’s shoulder. It would be a lot easier if Antennae clung to his back. “Wakey-wakey…”
Antennae’s face scrunched again, then he yawned and nuzzled into Pinky’s chest instead.
He looked so peaceful. It would go against Pinky’s little shoulder angel to wake him up now. What had he been thinking?
After a few minutes of searching through bottom drawers, Pinky found a soft kitchen sponge that hadn’t been removed from its packaging yet. It would make a perfect bed. Pinky pulled it out of the package, carefully maneuvering it out of the drawer while trying not to jostle Antennae too much.
Another drawer had several white, fluffy hand towels. They seemed clean enough, so Pinky slung two towels over his free shoulder and climbed out.
He laid one of the towels on the floor, then pushed the sponge on top. Cold feet weren’t fun in the morning nor in show business. Then he laid Antennae on the sponge and covered him with the second towel.
Antennae’s hand clung to Pinky’s fur, so Pinky loosened the grip and tucked the wayward hand under the towel.
“You’ll be alright,” Pinky whispered, stretching out his sore arms. Maybe he’d carried Antennae for a bit too long. But Pinky’s arms would be ready for more wheel-running tomorrow.
Now that both of his hands were free, Pinky grabbed a bandage roll which had been lying near a Bunsen burner. He’d have to thank Mr. Bunsen for letting him borrow these bandages later.
Pinky carefully removed the socks – maybe they were more shoes? Oh, well. He removed the shoe-socks from Antennae’s feet and laid them on the towel-rug. Since Antennae hadn’t been on his feet since the UFO, the cuts seemed to be healing just fine.
Pinky carefully bandaged the heels and folded the towel-blanket over Antennae’s feet once he was finished. Then he brought the baggie of tiny stars over and placed them next to the shoe-socks.
He climbed up to the counter briefly to wash his hands, humming Happy Birthday as he lathered with the honey-scented soap.
“Thank you, Silver’s Anatomy,” Pinky said to the TV remote, which teetered over the edge of the VCR. He turned to Mr. Button, still lying on his straw bed in the cage. “Sorry, Mr. Button. I’m sleeping elsewhere tonight. Here, you can have Nicholas so you won’t be lonely. Try not to keep him up too late, okay?”
He rolled Nicholas the Nickel into the cage and settled him near Mr. Button. They seemed happy. Mr. Button would no doubt be gossiping about the ballpoint pens again.
Pinky yawned and went back to the floor. It had been an eventful day, and he was very tired.
The towel-rug seemed very inviting…
Pinky buried his face into the towel fluff. Antennae had been twitching throughout Pinky’s counter business, but he stilled again once Pinky curled up.
Pinky fell asleep, dreaming of cheese and Pharfignewton and a deep, faraway voice. It was a lovely dream, except the voice couldn’t join Pinky and Pharfignewton in their little cheese and apple picnic. It seemed unwilling. Pinky made sure to save a few slices of cheddar and provolone for him. Maybe he’d take it afterward.
o-o-o-o-o
When the sunlight hit his eyes, Pinky leapt with joy. Early wheel runs were the best! So were mid-morning runs, and noon runs, and evening runs!
Except he couldn’t move. He could still wiggle his fingers and toes, but his hands were tied behind his back, purple yarn binding his ankles as well. His entire tail was still free though. He swished his tail just to be sure.
He shimmied over to the drawer and pressed his back against it, managing to sit up. Though he wanted to run on his wheel, being tied up was a fun game too.
Antennae wasn’t on the sponge bed though. Where was he? He was missing out!
Pinky wondered if he should just untie himself and find Antennae. The knots didn’t seem that hard. Though it was hard to tell for sure if it was a slipknot or an overhand knot. He really should’ve paid attention in knot-tying class.
Five minutes later, Antennae stomped over in his ripped shoe-socks, though little strips of bandage poked out.
Pinky smiled. If Antennae was stomping, his feet must be healing fast. And then he’d be okay again.
However, Antennae didn’t seem to think so.
“Wipe that ridiculous expression from your face, Terran,” Antennae scowled, his foot tapping impatiently. “Hand over all the information you know. I want answers, and I want them now.”
AN note: I’d like to give credit to @pluto-art for her wonderful drawing of Brain as a cute little alien.  With the way she posed him, I knew I wanted to incorporate that somewhere and this chapter seemed like a good place to do it! I meant to credit her last chapter for the blaster idea but I forgot so I’m rectifying that now.
Fig’s off to the races! Literally.
After the wringer I stuck him through last chapter, Brain seriously needed some cuddles. He’s a little touch-starved. Also, he’s a bad guest. Don’t tie your friend up, Brain. That’s just rude.

The Flame and the Dragon Ch 7
Chapter 7: The Master
"What the hell were you thinking!" A voice rang in Nya's head as she felt herself slowly regaining consciousness. She tried to shake the weariness from her mind and focus on the different voices echoing around her.
"Well, we weren't leaving them to freeze to death out in the rain all night." A soft voice argued.
"Yeah, and it's hard to ignore two people who suddenly dropped on your doorstep." A third voice with a laid back, casual tone to it added. The first voice shrieked in frustration.
"I don't care! I understand you guys wanted to help the poor things, really I do, but think about home! What do you think he's gonna do when he comes downstairs, finds us taking care of two strangers who are currently sitting on his favorite couch, after having trespassed! He isn't going to consider you're good deed!"
"Then don't tell him, Zane." A fourth, female voice entered, heavy with a hissing sound.
"Don't encourage them, Tox!" The first voice, Zane, scolded the woman, Tox.
"Come on Zane, we can't just leave them out in the storm? I mean we could just..." The soft voice argued timidly, pausing as if to ponder his options. "Just let them stay here the night and let them leave before he wakes up? The Master will never know."
"Jay..." Zane addressed the boy to who the diffident voice belonged too. "Look me in the eye and tell me you actually believe that will work?"
"Oh for FSM's sake, Zane." The unidentified voice howled, followed a stomping foot. "What do you suggest we do?" He challenged. Silence soon followed, allowing Nya time to recover and force her eyes to open. Haziness filled her vision as lights suddenly filled them but she blinked them away and sat up. Relieved to find Lloyd next to her. He was fast asleep, breathing normally, and wrapped in a warm blanket, and his clothes, hair, and skin bone dry.
She couldn't help but smile at how cute he looked sleeping.
She looked down at herself, not only to find she was no longer on the cobblestone path but a soft leather couch, covered by a thick fur blanket. The rainwater has been stripped to the last drop from her clothes, hair, and skin, much to her shock, though she refused to complain. Nya shook away the last waves of sleep and turned to thank their caretakers. But when she turned to the source of the voices she found not people, but four creatures standing in a circle.
One was a troll, one was a white yeti, and one was a green naga.
The last was a creature she didn't recognize. Its body was composed of lightning and with the form of a white and blue fox. Lloyd stirred awake, cutely rubbing his eyes, and shook his head adjusting to the light. The blue fox gently strolled over to Lloyd. It started climbing up the couch like a cat and perched itself on the headrest before cutely holding out a small paw for the boy to shake.
"Hi there, I'm Jay." It smiled and Lloyd's reaction was that of a wound-up spring. The small boy screamed and jumped and fell backward all in one motion, his hand missing the couch and fell into nothing causing him to crash to the floor in a heap. His eyes bulged out of his skull when the furry creature looked over the edge of the couch.
"You okay?" Jay asked.
"A talking fox?" Lloyd muttered from the floor, his voice speaking automatically, shaking. Nya was clearly frozen from shock.
"I'm not a talking fox! I'm a raijū!" Jay stomped his foot, rising to his feet insulted. He growled when he heard the troll and naga snickering, threatening to burst into laughter. Lloyd repositioned himself onto his knees just in time to meet toxic green eyes. The green naga smiled brightly.
"Hey! Name's Tox, what's yours? And before you ask, I'm a naga."
"I'm... Lloyd." He replied, momentarily forgetting to breathe, but answered nonetheless, before turning his he'd to his sister. She was frozen on the couch, with Jay floating around her head on a ball of electricity, waving his blue paws in front of her face.
"Hello? Is she mute?"
"She's in shock, you idiot!" The troll howled. "I'm Ronin, by the way."
"So who are you?" Lloyd smiled at the quiet yeti.
"I am Zane, a yeti with the power to control the element of ice," Zane explained, holding out a clawed hand to Lloyd. Lloyd shook the yeti's claw.
"I'm Lloyd and that's my big sister Nya." She smiled at his elder sibling. Though shock was evident all over her face, Nya held up a hand and waved.
"Oh for the love of FSM." Ronin smacked his forehead before a brilliant glow surrounded his body. A second later, the troll vanished and the light expanded until a tall human man stood in its place. He had wavy brown hair, dark brown eyes with the beginning of a beard on his face. He wore a dark cyan jumper with light brown pants and a large red hat. His arms crossed over his chest as he turned to the siblings.
"Is this better?" He asked but Nya fell out of her seat, still in shock.
"Perhaps this will help?" Zane suggested and a flash of turquoise and in place of the slender, white yeti stood a tall, strongly-built boy, around Ronin's height. He had platinum blonde, almost snowy white, hair that stood up straight in something like a crew cut and bright icy blue eyes. He wore white pants and shoes with a long-sleeved, cyan blue shirt under a navy blue knitted vest. The newly turned man offered a hand to the youngest Smith who was still on the floor.
Lloyd took it without thinking unable to take his eyes off the white-haired man standing before him.
Lloyd's eyes darted to Zane, then Jay, then Ronin and Tox. Tox and Jay looked at the other and smiled, before answering his unasked question. Jay landed on the floor, bathed in a navy blue light, before the blue fox he once was transformed into his true form. He was a young man with reddish-brown curly hair with brown eyebrows and light freckles. He usually wore a blue jacket with a white stripe over a white t-shirt and blue pants with an orange wooly scarf.
Despite his mature features his large, dark blue eyes and mischievous smile radiated innocence and youth.
They all looked to the naga. Tox smiled and a light green flash was the only warning anyone had before in the green naga's place stood a small, petite, almost delicate girl who was around Nya's age. She had long green hair tied back into a ponytail similar to Nya's with sickly, pale, yellowish skin and bright green eyes. Around her neck was a black, studded choker. She was wearing a ripped green tank top that was cut short to reveal her stomach and black, torn-up jeans.
Even though all of them were in human form they still had a few tell-tale signs that they weren't fully human.
Tox still had snake eyes and Ronin's ears were pointed and he had fangs poking out of his mouth. Zane still had a cold air around him and every time he exhaled the siblings could see his breath. Jay's limbs occasionally twitched with electricity.
"I'm sorry if I sound rude, but you three know they can't stay here! It's bad enough you even brought them inside!" Zane suddenly glared, dragged them back to the issue at hand.
"We didn't mean to intrude," Nya explained, "I just needed to find Lloyd shelter from the storm, we'll leave in the morning."
"Hell no!" Jay cut him off. "You're not intruding at all! Zane is just worried about the Master that's all, but he's asleep, just let us warn him quickly that you're here, and then—"
Suddenly an earth-shattering roar echoed through the castle shaking everyone within it to their knees. A tremor ran through Nya's body and Lloyd threw himself in his sister's arms, shaking in fear. The master was awake, and he was furious with the four creatures. A sharp gust of wind roared through the castle, silencing all the candles and shrouding everything in darkness. Despite the fear wracking their bodies the four creatures moved to hide their guests as best they could.
It was a vain attempt to hold their master's anger.
All four of them shook in fear. They knew full well the Master would never harm them, but just his presence alone was intimidating.
"Nya, I'm scared." Lloyd trembled as he tried to hide in his sister's coat.
"Shh, it'll be alright, I've got you." Nya soothed in a vain attempt to calm him down. But she screamed when suddenly a loud gust of wind like the beat of giant wings followed by the loud thump of someone landing behind him before the siblings or the creature could react, and then suddenly she came face to face with two blazing green eyes with black slits, not human, almost like a dragon's. Kai stories flashed in Nya's mind like old photographs.
Stunned mystification caused her eyes to bulge.
"That's not possible," She muttered as her mind began spinning and her body felt faint, but she stood her ground. She couldn't show fear with Lloyd in her arms. The master glared at her, those impossibly green eyes bore into her terrified ocean eyes like piercing arrows. Then he chuckled, a low callous laugh.
"Is that all you can do?" He spoke in a dark, humorous hiss. His green eyes aligned with the fire of hurt and rage that seemed so much older and deeper than his youth. "Stare at me, like I'm some kind of monster."
"It's our fault, not theirs! We're the ones who brought them here!" Jay, who had always been outspoken, tried in vain to defend them but the master's loud growl soon silenced him. Even Zane, who was one of the few who could speak to the master freely, shivered at his temper.
"We mean no harm," Nya replied. "My brother and I just needed shelter from the storm." She explained. The eyes left her and the moment they did, Nya felt as if some enchantment upon her had broken, until she realized the master has not even noticed Lloyd until that point. Before she could speak another world, Lloyd's screamed pierced the night, followed by Nya's when she felt Lloyd ripped from her arms. Something cold and metallic, wrap around her arm, prying them apart harshly.
"Please don't hurt my brother!" She screamed, without thinking. The master's eyes bulged in both horror and confusion before bitterness and humor once again filled them. Harsh laughter spilled from the master's lips shaking everyone to the core.
"Of course that would be your first assumption, too bad; I was going to be lenient, but since it seems you don't know how to hold your tongue, I suppose you'll need a harsher lesson." The master spoke arrogantly, in a tone that froze Nya's core, she couldn't see Lloyd in the darkness but could hear his tears and trembling. Each one ripped another piece of her apart.
"Zane, put them to bed, now." He ordered, glaring at Ronin, Jay, and Tox. Zane reluctantly nodded and obeyed. Eyes wide, the trio moved to flee, but Zane caught them before they could escape. In a flash of light, the boys and Tox human forms vanished and the three creatures fell to the floor. Again they attempted to make a dash for the nearest door, but the Zane caught them in ice before they could escape. They struggled if only to help their new friends.
The master simply snorted at their efforts.
"That's all they'll ever see me as." He muttered in a harsh voice, ceased all of their strugglings. The tone he said it in made it impossible to tell if he was speaking to the siblings or the other four creatures. "They'll only see me as a... a monster" He hissed in a voice of rage and bitterness, before scolding harshly at the trio's loud protests.
"THAT'S ENOUGH!" He commanded before flying away dragging his thrashing and screaming prisoners with him, towards the tower. Guilt and remorse poisoned the four creatures. Even Jay could no longer struggle as Zane brought them upstairs to the room they shared for as long as they could remember. The guilt and harshness of their master's tone hurt more than the extremely light punishment ever could. Even worse were Lloyd's screams of terror echoing through the castle until the loud clang of the tower door slamming shut replaced it.
A gloom once again settled over the castle as their master retreated brokenly to his only sanctuary.
A silent shiver of hope was tearing thread by thread that they would ever be free. Or the master's true love would ever come to free their prince from the undeserving and unspeakable fate that was sure to come the following spring...

We all wade through archetypes. We all ARE archetypes. Distant echoes of a life both primeval and noble. To embrace these archetypes, to accept them not only as a part of life but as life itself is what some may call enlightenment, some peace of mind. ELUVEITIE call it »Ategnatos«. And by using their longest gap between two Metal albums to gather momentum, they just forged their strongest album around it.  »Ategnatos« will be released on April 5th 2019 via Nuclear Blast. Today, the band revealed the stunning new album cover. This impressive artwork was created again by Travis Smith. The band states: "'Ategnatos' probably became our most organic album by all accounts. It is the result of a thoroughly intuitive process, where we gave creativity full scope. And during this process quite some back-to-the-roots developments emerged in diverse aspects. Many a riff off 'Ategnatos' reminds on the guitar work on 'Slania'. Following our gut feeling we brought the mixing duties back to Jens Bogren's Fascination Street studios, where our Nuclear Blast debut was produced. And regarding the album artwork it soon became very clear to us, that we'd love to work with the fabulous Travis Smith (www.seempieces.com) again, who already created the front covers of our albums 'Spirit' (14 years ago!) and 'Everything remains as it never was'. And we're honestly excited with the result! The frontcover shows spectacular scenery in central Switzerland, a so-called 'vulva cave', as it was sought to mark sacred rites of fertility and celebrations of life in ancient times! The artwork mystically and beautifully expresses the 'Ategnatos'' very core and essence! Once again it was a pleasure to work with Travis!" And together with the revealing of the first album details , Swiss folk metal leaders ELUVEITIE also announce their European tour in support of this upcoming masterpiece. ELUVEITIE will join forces with the legendary metal-act LACUNA COIL from Italy and the nu-metal-newcomcers INFECTED RAIN from Moldavia. ELUVEITIE states: "Our last few months have been extremely intense, creating 'Ategnatos'. Now we simply cannot wait to bring our new songs to the stages and to share our passion, pure fucking metal and heartfelt Celtic mysticism with you all! And all the more we're excited to bring such great bands with us! We feel honoured to team up with our fellows of the heavyweight institution called LACUNA COIL and also with the amazing wizkid that is INFECTED RAIN, whom we've shared festival stages with a few times already!" LACUNA COIL adds: "Transformation is a process and as life happens you need tons of new music! That’s why we are really excited to team up with ELUVEITIE and our buddies in INFECTED RAIN for this fantastic tour package. The bill is pretty diverse and interesting and we can’t wait to bring it around Europe. We will play some of our classic songs and introduce some new tunes! We know this tour is going to be rocking, and we know the fans are going to enjoy this as much as we are!" Lena from INFECTED RAIN comments: "2019 appears to be very promising for Infected Rain! A lot of new releases, new relationships and new places to visit. We are excited about all of this and especially about the Autumn tour that is going to end the year so perfectly. We are going to support two great bands and amazing people on tour for more than forty shows around Europe. We are honored to share the stage with Eluveitie and Lacuna Coil." With »Ategnatos«, the dedicated nine-piece not only worked with a real string quartet (a premiere!) and granted Fabienne Erni‘s sublime mastery of the harp the room it deserved; they also undertook a holistic upgrade resulting in some of the most catchy, most aggressive or most epic tunes the Swiss Metal nobility has ever offered. The Flame and the Dragon Ch 6
Chapter 6: The Storm
"Please, Kai?" Lloyd clasped his hands together and begged.
"We've been through this, my answer isn't gonna change overnight," Kai explained again as he and Nya loaded the caravan with enough supplies for around a week's travel.
"Please!" Lloyd dragged out the word in a whine, flashing a wide-eyed innocent look when his big brother turned around.
"No." Kai smiled and gently petted Flame's mane. The stunning light brown colored stallion neighed. "Easy there, boy."
"Please!" Lloyd pleaded to flash his infamous pout that had even Flame whining.
"Lloyd, I grew up with you; that doesn't work on me anymore." He said calmly, causing his little jaw to hit the floor. Even Nya couldn't resist him when he pulled his stunning emerald eyes into a cute, pleading look.
"Ah, why not!" He pouted.
"Someone needs to stay and watch the shop, and since Nya's the one entering the fair's contest, she's out of the question, you're obviously too young to do it, so that leaves me." He explained smiling at Lloyd's cuteness.
"Or... or a third option, all three of us got and we can close the shop for a week." He suggested, hoping for some kind of an excuse.
"You know we can't leave the shop unattended that long, we already have at least five orders, and besides, I don't mind staying home."
"It's not fair."
"And here I thought I'd get to finally spend some time with my baby brother." Nya playfully whined mocking innocence, causing both of her brothers to snort in laughter.
"I still don't see why we can't just close the shop for a week." The youngest Smith pouted and crossed his arms.
"Because, even if Nya's newest creation wins the contest, we're still going to need some money for and after we move; unless, of course, you plan on starving, green bean," Kai explained smiling, stroking Flame's sleek, brown nose, affectionately.
"He's not going to give in, so come here and help me back," Nya told Lloyd. Groaning in defeat, he pushed himself off the side of the caravan and helped Nya load the supplies. Flame playfully rubbed his nose against Kai's neck and snorted in his hair and made the brunette laugh.
"You take good care of my little siblings, okay Flame?" Kai instructed as he turned around and nuzzled the stunning stallion. "And make sure Nya doesn't get lost again, you know how bad she is with directions." He teased.
"Hey!" Nya growled. Flame neighed in approval. "Even the damn horse is against me." She growled. Lloyd burst out laughing until she heaved him by his underarms and sat him on the driver's seat. "That's everything." She said, dusting off her hands. "We packed enough food, supplies, and medicine for at least a week, but we should be back in a couple of days; do you need anything from the fair Kai?"
"No, I'll be fine; the only thing I need to worry about is Morro and if all else fails Dr. Saunders is right down the road." He smiled. Nya smiled at her twin before climbing onto the caravan and grabbing Flame's reigns.
"We'll be back in a week." She promised.
"Bye Kai!" Lloyd exclaimed as he wormed his way to the front and waved.
"Don't get into trouble while we're gone!" Nya teased.
"I won't; good luck at the fair!" He called and waved goodbye watching Flame and the caravan trot off before disappearing down the road. "And don't get lost this time!" He shouted in a final attempt of teasing.
"Shut up!" Nya hollered, just before the caravan disappeared. That didn't stop her and Lloyd hearing Kai's laughter echoing after them...
****************
"Nya?" Lloyd shivered as he wrapped himself in a blanket like a human burrito.
"Not a word," Nya growled; hard blue eyes meticulously scanned the enormous map spread in front of her. The square-shaped map was large enough that if she held it to its full length it would stretch from her waist to past her hair and spread her arms to their full length.
"Nya," Lloyd said again, annoyed.
"Lloyd..." Nya responded in a testy voice.
"We're lost!" He shouted in anger, no longer carrying about the consequences of igniting his sister's temper. The map crushed in Nya's hands as she clumped it in one hand and slammed it down next to her. Her teeth gritted in a hiss and her eyes turned to her younger brother, bright with anger. "What did I just tell you!"
"We're lost; you can't read a map, and it's pitch black!" He snapped. "If you're not going to admit it to yourself, and since Kai's not here to, I will!" He growled in frustration. Lloyd may not have been as strong-willed as his older siblings but he was more than capable of holding his own if pushed too far. Nya opened her mouth to yell and argue, but the words quickly died in her throat. The confident, know-it-all smirk on Lloyd's face made it impossible to find fault with his argument, and the proud sister hated that.
Frustrated at her bruised ego more than anything else, Nya chucked the crushed map in Lloyd's lap.
"Fine then, you navigate." She huffed and smirked at the baffled look on his face before it hardened. If that was the game she wanted to play then he was more than willing to prove her wrong.
"Any idea's Flame?" Lloyd asked as he turned to the large brown stallion. The horse shook his head. "That's alright." He smiled before flipping his legs over the side of the caravan, slipped inside, and dug through their supplies, before reemerging with a lantern. The angry, orange fire, trapped inside the glass prison, burned vigorously in the darkness. "We're heading to World Fair, right?" He asked. She nodded, looking around for any type of landmark to help identify their location.
It was hard to tell in the darkness, but the moonlight illuminated their surroundings enough that it looked like a forest.
The dark trees stood, like enormous skeletons, their decaying leaves were black and brown without the sun to illuminate them. The wind sent a shower of them into the air. The road withered into a dirt path, filled with heavy stones and overgrown with weeds, worn down by travel. He sighed in relief that he remembered to change Flame's shoes before the journey began. No sounds flooded the forest except for the cooing of an owl or the hiss of bat wings.
The skeletal hands of the trees stretched and pulled as if trying to create a net of branches above them blocking out all sun.
"Well, look at it this way, at least it can't get worse." She said humorously. No sooner had those words left her mouth, a loud crack of thunder roared across the sky in a high-pitched shriek, followed by a waterfall of water, multiple flashes of lightning streaking the night sky, and heavy black clouds overhead, with flashes of white and lemon yellow. If looks could kill, Lloyd's glare would've sent Nya straight to the pits of hell.
"You just had to ask, didn't you!?" He snarled. Lloyd's mood failed to increase as the night dragged on. Even though he'd retreated into the cavern, the rain had soaked him to the bone and he'd given up trying to rake the water from his soaked hair. "Where are we anyway!" He screeched and jumped as another streak of lightning slashed across the sky followed by the crash of thunder.
"I don't know, but we have to get out of this storm quick!" Nya yelled as loud as she could. Unfortunately, her voice was barely a whisper over the freezing wind, hissing like a banshee, the rain hammering the muddy dirt into the ground and the crashing thunder above their heads. The night had bathed the entire forest in a cloak of blackness; the only light they had available was the streaks of lighting slashing across the sky like jagged white scars.
Flame neighed and jumped in fear, as the thunder roared and increase.
Nya attempted to coax him but it did no good. The storm was savage and dangerous and the horse knew it. Lloyd screeched, as he tried to move to the front, only to be thrown back and forth as the caravan shook, due to Flame's sudden outburst. A loud burst of thunder roared to life with the force of an explosion. The sound vibrations shook the entire forest and broke that last of Flame's calmness. The horse went wild and ripped the reins from Nya's hand.
The caravan shook violently causing Lloyd to scream until he suddenly flew from the caravan, crashing to the carpet of leaves and mud.
Ignoring the horse, Nya bolted off the caravan to her brother's aid. She scooped the boy into her arms, checking him over for wounds. The icy rain hammered their skin like a thousand frozen needles. Another roar of thunder and Flame took off down the road, back the way they came, leaving the siblings alone in the storm.
"Oh no! Lloyd!" Nya called, worried for her little brother. Lloyd opened his mouth to reply but coughed wildly instead. Nya's heart skipped a beat, eyes bulging from shock and worry. She ripped off her thick, black trench coat and wrapped it around the smaller before pulling him to his feet. The coughing continued. She dragged him by the hand, willing them both not to stop. She couldn't until they at least found some form of shelter from the storm.
Rain hammered in diagonal lines, making it impossible to see.
The storm blocked out the light of the stars and moon making the forest completely black. She pulled him closer to her, hoping to give him further warmth. She stomped in the mud until her boots hit something solid. Caught by surprise, Nya looked down and found they were no longer on the mud-soaked road, but a cobbled stone path. Her eyes followed the pale silver stone until her eyes caught sight of an enormous iron-clad gate. Despite the grotesque, almost haunted appearance, she scooped Lloyd up bridal style and carried him towards the open gate.
The hinges screamed their protest as she pushed through the rusted black gate, before slamming it shut, in case any hungry beasts followed them.
The cobblestone path winded and curved towards an enormous castle. Nya's eye almost bulged out of her skull at the sight of it. It looked like it was right out of one of Kai's Gothic novels. Thirteen slim, round towers dominated the skyline of this massive castle and were connected by fortified, firm walls made of dark grey stone. Scattered thinly across the walls in a seemingly random pattern were symmetric holes for archers and artillery.
The roof was a complex jumble of black-slate cones, spires, trapezoids, and gothic styles windows with iron frames stacked on connected and linked by flying buttresses.
Pointed arches, oval and arch-shaped stain-glass windows, and arches, and different sized balconies littered the entire castle. She was sure the stained-glass windows looked beautiful in the daylight. The entrance jutted from the front of the house, carved like a giant hallway of off grey-black stones, like columns, the hallways, hazy glass windows lines with faded silver. The darkness and lightning flashing behind it only added to its haunted appearance but at that very moment, Nya didn't care.
Feeling her strength fading her, and seeing Lloyd, already unconscious and shivering, she forced her body to obey.
She could feel the strength leave her body, and she fell to her knees. Blackness danced in her vision before she collapsed to the ground. The last thing she saw or thought she saw before the darkness finally claimed her were two small creatures staggering towards them...
