Examples of Knuckles sensing all forms of Chaos Energy (and other things?) so I can aggressively point here whenever people forget about it

I see this part of Knuckles' abilities forgotten way too often and it drives me insane so here

1: HE CAN SENSE THE MASTER EMERALD.

Very blatant. His entire gameplay in SA1 and SA2 revolves around this ability. He innately has the ability to sense the Master Emerald and its shards. Rouge meanwhile is given an Emerald Detector in SA2 to explain her gameplay.

2: HE CAN SENSE CHAOS CONTROLS.

He senses "some strange energy" right before Sonic Chaos Controls right in front of him. Essentially predicting a Chaos Control. IDK how else you could read this lmao he literally sensed a Chaos Control. (I swear I never see anyone talk about this ever grrr)

3: HE CAN SENSE SOL EMERALDS AND CHAOS EMERALDS.

This interaction in Sonic Rush confirms that he can sense both Sol Emeralds and Chaos Emeralds. For him to be able to mistake Sol Emeralds for Chaos Emeralds without seeing them, he has to be using some sixth sense, and has to be familiar with sensing Chaos Emeralds as well.

4: HE CAN SENSE FAKE/ARTIFICIAL EMERALDS.

Knuckles goes looking for a mysterious Emerald presence, and finds Tails' fake Emerald. Pretty straightforward. Also, evidence of the Master Emerald itself being sentient and able to direct Knuckles to investigate anomalies. (I wish more people made use of that, too.)

5: HE... HAS A LITERAL TREASURE SENSE, APPARENTLY?

This is... a strange one. A bit of an outlier. I assumed that instances of Knuckles sensing treasures were purely gameplay mechanics, but here he appears to literally sense a pair of combat gloves, which is completely unrelated to Chaos Energy. So I guess he can do that too? But maybe it's only because he was led there by the ghosts of his ancestors? Who knows.

Oh yeah. BTW, Knuckles gets sent dreams by his ancestors' ghosts. That is canon. Someone pls use that in some way lol

So anyway. There. A bunch of examples of Knuckles sensing all forms of Chaos Energy, not just the Master Emerald. Throw this at someone if they question the extent of this ability and want evidence lol

This has been such an incredible year for Sonic and has revitalized my love for these characters and the franchise as a whole. Between the Sonic movies and Sonic Frontiers, my brain has been filled with nothing but this blue boy. I think the last time I actually drew him or any of the main cast was all the way back in 2013-14. So I thought it might be fun to use this wave in inspiration and make multiple character sketch sheets as practice since I’m a little rusty with these guys. It was very cathartic to focus on something different away from my personal project work and I plan to do either Super Sonic or Tails next. :)

My interpretation of how Chaos Energy and Super Powers work in the Sonic Universe.

Enough people asked for it, so here's my ramble! This is all completely headcanon, I just wanted to make Chaos Energy more integrated into the world than it actually is in the games. It's been cooking in my brain ever since I got back into Sonic, and it's only been growing as I've continued. I don't believe this is how it actually works in canon, but this is how it works in my Headcanon Shatterverse Headscape Place (tm).

Chaos Emeralds can be used by anyone once they are properly judged, filling the user with insane amounts of clean Chaos Energy. Since having that much Chaos Energy inside you is a health risk, that's why you lose rings over time when you're Super. When a user runs out of rings, they become exhausted, passing out on the spot. But as a user gets more and more adjusted to the Emeralds, they can drop their super form before losing all of their rings, thus not over exerting themselves.

I haven't fully ironed out how the Chaos Emeralds (or the Master Emerald) work here yet, so I'll have to come back to this some other time.

But being able to use Chaos Energy is different from harnessing the Chaos Emeralds.

Example: Sonic is able to go Super with the Emeralds, but he has a Chaos Ability: His speed.

The way I show if a character has a Chaos Ability is with colored markings on them.

(This is a recent thing I started implementing, so I gotta redesign some characters like Shadow, Sonic, and Knuckles)

Example of characters with Chaos Abilities: Tangle, Blaze, Kit, and Silver.

They have a color wrapped around their ear and iris, and most of their beans have the color too. Plus they got patterns on them with said color.

Characters without Chaos Abilities for example are Whisper, Tails, and Amy.

They all have extraordinary abilities, but those are either because of a weapon, or they're gifted in that skill (like a Guinness book of world records person).

Chaos Abilities are not too common, but not enough Mobians have them to call it a 50/50 split.

A Mobian can have their Chaos Ability appear when they are 5 years old. The child often has a huge celebration to see if they will get an ability or not.

When the user has their Chaos Ability develop, it doesn't take too much for them to get tired, but as they continue to use it, they can use their abilities longer and do more daunting stunts with them. 

In the future, when a user starts out, they normally need to wear Chaos Energy Inhibitor Rings (which looks a lot like Silvers cuffs wink wink nudge nudge) to suppress their inner Chaos Energy until they can get a hold of it. The more powerful the Natural Chaos Energy is, the more Inhibitor Rings you gotta wear. A user can survive without them, it’s just safer for everyone if they do wear them when they get started.

The ability's difficulty is based purely on how much Chaos Energy the user naturally has. It also affects what the ability a user will get by how much energy they have, sort of as their body's way of figuring out how to use it properly. (Mobians without Chaos Abilities have Chaos Energy too, it's just not enough to give them an ability)

If they are a Low-Level Natural Chaos Energy User: it's stupid easy for them to master it. Because their body doesn't need to do as much work. Pyrokinesis and Stretching Limbs are fairly easy to master because of that.

High-Level Natural Chaos Energy Users have a hard time grasping how to use their abilities at first, some even needing training from people with similar abilities to get out of Chaos Energy Ring Inhibitors. Super Speed and Telekinesis are a few difficult abilities to master.

You can tell if someone has too much Chaos Energy or not enough by looking at their markings. Too much will have the already glowy patterns light up BRIGHT, while if the user doesn't have much left, it becomes a dull light.

Like a lightbulb, if there’s a lot of power in it, it’ll shine REALLY BRIGHT, but too much and it’ll pop. If there’s little to no power in it, it’ll flicker and fade into a dim light until it eventually turns off.

Chaos Abilities have 2 branches: a sort of projection ability or a physical one.

Projection is like your stereotypical 'this guy has powers!' ability. Pyrokinesis, Aquakinesis, and Telekinesis are a few examples. The user well... uses the Chaos Energy inside them to bend the Chaos Energy that flows freely around them to do what their Ability is.

The Chaos Energy in the air is different from the Chaos Energy inside the user. It's like water. The energy inside of the user is some sort of food dye and the Chaos Energy in the air is like water, when the 2 mix, the water (chaos energy) outside changes into what your dye (users chaos energy) is and spreads it to wherever you choose.

Projection Chaos Abilities are fairly common.

Projection Chaos Users get drained physically if they use their abilities for too long, since they are technically spewing their Chaos Energy out into the world.

Physical are rarer (I’m talking 1/1,000 chance). Since it physically enhances or changes the user. The ability to stretch your tail to comical lengths, super speed, and changing your size at will are a few examples. The user is like a sponge, they soak up the Chaos Energy around them and the energy inside of them guides it to do what it needs to do.

Physical Chaos Users feel worn out if they over exert themselves because they have to hold so much Chaos Energy inside of them.

There are legitimate health risks if either over exert themselves.

Projection Chaos Users can actually put their life at risk if they lose all of their Chaos Energy, since every living being needs at least some to survive. If a user uses everything, they better have a Chaos rich thing nearby or they'll pass out. At worst, they could be in a coma (well, aside from death, but that's very hard to do) as their body is forcibly trying to recover. The user recovers Chaos Energy naturally by eating or resting, so a good way to replenish the energy used in a fight is to eat a quick snack or take a nap.

Physical Chaos Users can overcharge if they absorb too much, since they're taking in so much Chaos Energy. Too much energy could potentially lead to a person to literally catch on fire as their body is trying to burn the energy away. The user typically runs a higher temperature (and steam if it's a lot) when they naturally release the energy they built up inside them, basically giving them a fever. This is their body trying to safely burn away the excess energy. If the user wants to recover faster, you should give them a heated blanket or something to warm them up.

Shadow is a special case because he literally lives off the Natural Chaos Energy that the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald release into the world. Where a normal Chaos User can live perfectly fine if there isn't any Natural Chaos Energy outside because of the stored Chaos Energy inside of them, Shadow will be seriously ill if there isn't any Natural Chaos Energy outside since he doesn't have any inside of him.

And that's all, I hope my ramblings made even an ounce of sense.

headcanon that Eggman, a human, has freakish proportions because of his exposure to Chaos Energy. Chaos Energy has also warped Sonic and gave him green eyes, is the reason behind the many rings scattered across the planet (they’re ingots of concentrated Chaos Energy) and is the reason the environment sometimes looks crazy with loops and floating platforms. Chaos Energy moves in circles, hence the shape of the rings and the loops.

Special stages move in circles as well because they’re dimensional pockets of pure Chaos Energy.

Chaos Battle goes crazy

Have Fleetway and Shadow ever fought in the comics? I don't think they have. It'd be so neat, Shadow who's constantly having to hold back his energy against Super who cannot contain himself in the slightest. Plus this is a good piece to plug my chaos energy headcanon (interpretation?) that wielders have their own sort of signature and Sonic's is fire while Shadow's is electricity. They look a lot alike.

Idk what color Fleetway's chaos energy is, but I wanted to work with color pelleting so i made a pink that was on the exact opposite side of the color wheel from Shadow's lime green

I did a lot of practice with line weight in this which I then completely overshadowed with visual effects. It's fine I'm not mad at all. Not in the slightest.

Sonic head cannon’s

First how I believe chaos related abilities work. Everyone has chaos energy in them this can manifest in different ways like super strength (Knuckles,Amy, Mighty) or being able to summon weapons (Amy again)

Now characters like Shadow and Sonic are a little different 

Shadow: is made to store a high amount of chaos energy so much in fact that he needs his inhibitor ring to not “overheat”. when his storage temporarily runs dry he needs to or rest and absorb the natural chaos energy in the air or use a chaos emerald 

Sonic: is basically a sponge for every kind of energy and is able to absorb a lot of energy from the world around him. him being like a sponge is also the reason why he is compatible with every energy source from the chaos emeralds to the world rings. 

 Its also the reason why dark Gaia entered his body specifically when it had no where to go 

Differences: while they both have insane amounts of chaos energy they make sure they don’t overheat(Shadow)/overrun(Sonic) differently Sonic loses his energy by running while Shadow just has his inhibitors. While Shadow has a limited too how much energy he can get at maximum Sonic Doesn’t that same limit how he keeps getting stronger overtime 

But how about Silver?

Now Silver 

In the future chaos energy isn’t in little doses in every one. for survival only some people have lots of it leaving it as survival of the fittest. their chaos ability’s still show in one prominent way like in the past but that one way is stronger overall (Silver’s psychokinesis).

So Silver just evolved to have more chaos energy than a normal mobian 

Now earlier I mentioned Amy in two categories because that’s a rare type when chaos ability show in two different ways both are half a strong than if it was your only ability that’s why while Amy has super strength she isn’t as strong as Knuckles or Mighty

So this is my insane sonic ramblings for now 

(Yes I do think Sonic is stronger than Shadow)

Anyway. About Ultra Chaos Knuckles -

Originally, I meant for the design to be a hypothetical for what the power of the master emerald could be used for. (Not that Knuckles would willingly use it, of course... But that's something I have said multiple times.)

However, now I'm thinking of something quite the opposite-

Basically, the form would stem from the "regular" super form, involving the 7 chaos emeralds... But without the ME's influence on the emeralds. Meaning that the energy of the chaos emerald would be completely and utterly scattered and not controllable. Now, how would one achieve this form? How would one remove the power of the master emerald? Great questions. I don't bave the answers to them(as of yet).

I'm not sure if I should just make a separate form for this concept, or just replace it with the original concept of ultra Chaos knuckles. Or if I should make a different form for the original concept. Or just leave it like this. I might think about it more later.

But I've also been thinking, with how utterly chaotic this fork would be, it would also probably result in death (??) cause let's ne honest, would pure, unfiltered, uncontrolled power of the chaos emeralds NOT kill a single simple living organism, such as a mobian? It seems unlikely that uncontrollable power would ever be sustainable and non-lethal. So if I ever write a fanfic with it, the character in this form is probably gonna die

Anyway. I forgot to mention, that the ultra Chaos form actually accentuates and powers up already existing (stronger) attributes to its maximum capacity. Such as, if the living organism is more strong than fast, they're going to be EXTREMELY strong, and somewhat (?) fast. Another thing is that, on Ultra Chaos knuckles' design, you can notice on his chest that there is a moon depicted or something. Well, in case Sonic would go ultra chaos mode, he would have a sun on his belly instead (because while knuckles' character was conceptualized, he was meant to be the opposite of sonic, both design and personality wise, one of the traits being the moon crescent on his chest, that's supposed to be the opposite of sonics round belly, meant to.. look like a sun? apparently. I got this from the sonknux shipping wiki from like a year ago so I might've remembered something incorrectly but yeah that's not the point of this post.)

Anyway sidenote I FUCKING DESPISE the name "ultra chaos" for the form, because it's literally the first thing I thought of like, a YEAR ago, so I might change it, I just haven't thought of a better name as of yet

When I write fanfic for Sonic I'm generally using decades-old headcanons that pull from a myriad sources, and that I just kind of roll with and assume the reader will pick up what I'm putting down, so here's an old one that makes an attempt at explaining Mobius' "magic system".

Most lifeforms on Mobius* have Chaos Energy senses that we can't really directly translate to Earth senses. The closest we can generally come is assigning colours to different wavelengths of Chaos Energy the way we assign them to different wavelengths of light. Languages on Mobius generally make a distinction between, say, "yellow (light colour)" and "yellow (Chaos colour)," but they're understood to have a correlation. The yellow (light wavelength) Chaos Emerald is a pure manifestation of yellow (Chaos wavelength): this is what Tails was talking about when he mentioned his artificial Emerald had the same properties and wavelengths as the original.

While most Mobian languages do have the Chaos/light distinction, there is sometimes confusion comparable to homophones in any language, and in translation to Earth languages it can sound downright synesthetic, but generally context clues will let you know what someone's talking about in translation. Some people, such as Silver, are genuinely synesthetic between Chaos colours and light colours, too.

Along with these Chaos Energy senses, everything on Mobius has a Chaos Energy field around it. Psychics and martial artists can manipulate either their own Chaos Energy field or the ambient Chaos Energy in the air to do things like ramming robots without breaking any bones, manipulating fire, or telekinesis. This is the source of the 'auras' various characters display when using Chaos powers: Sonic's is blue, Shadow's is golden, Silver's is cyan, and so on. Mobian people (both Mobian and human) aren't seeing these colours: they're Chaos-sensing them. Some people can even use Chaos Energy to predict the future! (At least a possible future...!)

They're also not seeing rings; rings are small concentrations of ambient Chaos Energy in the gold wavelength that people can absorb and use for Chaos powers. This is why the Super Form timers are represented by rings: it's a measure of how much Chaos Energy someone has available to hold onto the Emeralds, and absorbing ambient Chaos Energy increases the amount of time someone can. This is also why the lightspeed dash requires a line of rings: Sonic or Shadow are using the high concentration of energy to dash at near-relativistic speeds for as long as the energy lasts.

* I call it Mobius because (a) I grew up with it and (b) I usually find it more fun to explore an alien planet that's fairly Earthlike but with weird bits than Yet Another Alternate Earth.
