Let's Talk About Ir Abelas, Da'ean

As some of you may know, I am vehemently against the dishonest use of AI in fandom and creative spaces. It has been brought to my attention by many, many people (and something I myself have thought on many times) that there is a DreadRook fic that is super popular and confirmed to be written at least partially with AI. I have the texts to prove it was written (at least) with the help of the Grammarly Rewrite generative feature.

Before I go any further, let it be known I was friends with this author; their use of rewrite features is something they told me and have told many other people who they have shared their fic with. It is not however, at the time of posting this, tagged or mentioned on their fic on AO3, in any capacity. I did in fact reach out to the author before making this post. They made absolutely no attempt to agree to state the use of Rewrite AI on their fic, nor be honest or upfront (in my opinion) about the possibility of their fic being complete generative AI. They denied the use of generative AI as a whole, though they did confirm (once again) use of the rewrite feature on Grammarly.

That all said: I do not feel comfortable letting this lie; since I have been asked by many people to make this, this post is simply for awareness.

You can form your own opinion, if you wish to. In fact, I encourage you to do such.

Aside from the, once again, high volume word output of around 352K words in less than 3 months (author says they had 10 chapters pre-written over "about a month" before they began posting; they are also on record saying they can write 5K-10K daily) from November until now, I have also said if you are familiar with AI services or peruse AI sites like ChatGPT, C.AI, J.AI, or any others similar to these, AI writing is very easy to pick out.

After some intense digging, research, and what I believe to be full confirmation via AI detection software used by professional publishers, there is a large and staggering possibility that the fic is almost entirely AI generated, bar some excerpts and paragraphs, here and there. I will post links below of the highly-resourced detection software that a few paragraphs and an entire chapter from this fic were plugged into; you are more than welcome to do with this information what you please.

I implore you to use critical thinking skills, and understand that when this many pieces in a work come back with such a high percentage of AI detected, that there is something going on. (There was a plethora of other AI detection softwares used that also corroborate these findings; I only find it useful to attach the most reputable source.)

Some excerpts do in fact come back as 100% likely written by human; however, this does not mean that the author was not using the Grammarly Paraphrase/Rewrite feature for these excerpts.

The Grammarly Paraphrase/Rewrite feature does not typically clock as AI generative text, and alongside the example below, many excerpts from other fics were take and put through this feature, and then fed back into the AI detection software. Every single one came back looking like this, within 2% of results:

So, in my opinion, and many others, this goes beyond the use of the simple paraphrase/rewrite feature on Grammarly.

Whether you choose to use AI in your own fandom works is entirely at your own discretion. However, it is important to be transparent about such usage.

AI has many negative impacts for creatives across many mediums, including writers, artists, and voice actors.

If you use AI, it should be tagged as such, so that people who do not want to engage in AI works can avoid engaging with it if they wish to.

Seriously, just stop. It's not a search engine. It's an AI that more often than not makes up answers. Tells you the wrong definition of a word. Claims another doesn't exist. Gives you the wrong meaning for names or locations or history. Gives incorrect, and even dangerous, advice regarding health or proper care for humans, plants, or animals.

It's not reliable in any way, shape, or form.

Please, I am begging you on my knees, stop blindly believing anything AI tells you. Learn to research on your own. It's a valuable skill! Stop using Google--it's hard to get past the AI and sponsored results these days--and try Firefox or DuckDuckGo. Those don't give you bullshit, they just give you results.

Please please please stop elevating AIs to this level of trustworthiness that is absolutely not deserved. They are not helpful, they are not accurate, they are stupid programs that can mislead you which can be harmlessly embarrassing, or dangerously toxic.

Researching is becoming a lost skill these days, and if you don't know how to do it properly, ASK. I am the research queen in my house, and used to write articles for a living using any tiny tidbit I found online. (From verified sources, of course.)

Stop giving AI more power than it already has. It's not helping you, it's filling your head with inaccurate information, which is really hard to unlearn down the line. And it's only going to get worse the more people lean into it and only believe what it tells them.

It's not smart just because it's a computer. Stop giving it so much credit.

Deity Jester AU to come later today, for now take this random brainworm I had this morning: MDZS modern AU where Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get paired up for a school project to their equal dismay. Wei Wuxian tries to use ChatGPT because "oh em gee it's so much easier than having to sit around writing!" but every time he does this, Lan Wangji reads it and goes "no AI." because he's like a human AI detector and can tell that this lifeless slop is not written by a human. It gets to the point where it's taking up more time to try and get AI past Lan Wangji than just writing out his part, so Wei Wuxian finally, begrudgingly caves and writes up his part of the essay. Lan Wangji reads it and is like "this is the most beautiful writing I've ever seen" because it's just wild and fantastical and so obviously a sign of just humanity. Human intellect and thought processes. It may go off the rails at some points (Lan Wangji has the version history pulled up just to be sure that there hasn't been anything added in, and there are many instances of a completely insane paragraph being written only to be entirely deleted because the moral debate of nature versus nurture doesn't actually have anything to do with the historical battle of whenever the fuck), but it is brilliant. Cut to Lan Wangji trying to Pavlov Wei Wuxian into not using AI.

i cannot even begin to explain how much AI is ruining fandom. chatting with Character AI seems cool at first but the way today's kids literally roleplay on their own??? makes me SICK. i wish they could have the same fandom experience we had. back in our day people would make group chats and everyone would pretend to be a character. they would make accounts dedicated to those personas, they would commit to that shit. they would post as that character and leave comments and reply to messages and asks. back then we had creativity and we celebrated being weird and cringe together and most importantly FANDOM WAS A COMMUNITY. it wasn't just a pastime or content to consume. it was about sharing your love for something with other people. meeting people that want to talk about the same things you do. making friends. the fact that today's teens sit in their room talking to a bot makes me feral. go online and find your people!! share your thoughts!! fandom is meant to be participated in!!!

Seeing an AI character develop over time, sort of grow into it’s own personality. The audience and characters wondering how alive is it? How intentional is it’s actions, is it doing good or bad or what it deems necessary?

All that intrigue gone because lame Silicon Valley tech bros decides to name their Machine Generation system an AI. There is no intelligence. It is riding the coattails of iconic AI characters in media.

Well, Microsoft finally did it. I've used MS Word for literally decades. But on my last update, they added their AI crap, aka Copilot. There's a frickin' Copilot widget on the left-hand side of the page, like literally on the page you're trying to write on, that moves down with your cursor. And you can't turn it off.

So now I'm getting used to LibreOffice.

Someone I know in an RP/writing discord got a message from one of the members. This stranger messaged them to let them know that they use ChatGPT to create their characters' backstories and plotlines and someone suggested the person I know as someone who is very good at creating backstories and so they wanted to, from what it sounds like to me, essentially crib ideas off of them.

I'm just like... What are we even DOING anymore?

You are in a group to write for fun. You are so lacking in the human ability to dream that you are having a machine create for you. Then you are I guess dissatisfied with its soulless imitations so your next move is to ask someone else with actual creative capacity for ideas because you never consider just dreaming on your own, no, it makes more sense to feed someone else's dreams into the machine so it can regurgitate it to you in order for "you" to "create" "your" "original character".

I mean. I know that's what they've all been doing from the start, when they don't care about the artists they rip off or the voices they use in their voice mods but to come right out and say it TO A PERSON'S FACE like, "Give me your mind, I don't have one and I'm going to make this machine rethink your thoughts" is just so absurd and insulting and maddening and ridiculous. I'm tired.
