African poverty is partly a consequence of energy poverty. In every other continent the vast majority of people have access to electricity. In Africa 600m people, 43% of the total, cannot readily light their homes or charge their phones. And those who nominally have grid electricity find it as reliable as a Scottish summer. More than three-quarters of African firms experience outages; two-fifths say electricity is the main constraint on their business.
If other sub-Saharan African countries had enjoyed power as reliable as South Africa’s from 1995 to 2007, then the continent’s rate of real GDP growth per person would have been two percentage points higher, more than doubling the actual rate, according to one academic paper. Since then South Africa has also had erratic electricity. So-called “load-shedding” is probably the main reason why the economy has shrunk in four of the past eight quarters.
Solar power is increasingly seen as the solution. Last year Africa installed a record amount of photovoltaic (PV) capacity (though this still made up just 1% of the total added worldwide), notes the African Solar Industry Association (AFSIA), a trade group. Globally most solar PV is built by utilities, but in Africa 65% of new capacity over the past two years has come from large firms contracting directly with developers. These deals are part of a decentralised revolution that could be of huge benefit to African economies.
Ground zero for the revolution is South Africa. Last year saw a record number of blackouts imposed by Eskom, the state-run utility, whose dysfunctional coal-fired power stations regularly break down or operate at far below capacity. Fortunately, as load-shedding was peaking, the costs of solar systems were plummeting.
Between 2019 and 2023 the cost of panels fell by 15%, having already declined by almost 90% in the 2010s. Meanwhile battery storage systems now cost about half as much as five years ago. Industrial users pay 20-40% less per unit when buying electricity from private project developers than on the cheapest Eskom tariff.
In the past two calendar years the amount of solar capacity in South Africa rose from 2.8GW to 7.8GW, notes AFSIA, excluding that installed on the roofs of suburban homes. All together South Africa’s solar capacity could now be almost a fifth of that of Eskom’s coal-fired power stations (albeit those still have a higher “capacity factor”, or ability to produce electricity around the clock). The growth of solar is a key reason why there has been less load-shedding in 2024...
Over the past decade the number of startups providing “distributed renewable energy” (DRE) has grown at a clip. Industry estimates suggest that more than 400m Africans get electricity from solar home systems and that more than ten times as many “mini-grids”, most of which use solar, were built in 2016-20 than in the preceding five years. In Kenya DRE firms employ more than six times as many people as the largest utility. In Nigeria they have created almost as many jobs as the oil and gas industry.
“The future is an extremely distributed system to an extent that people haven’t fully grasped,” argues Matthew Tilleard of CrossBoundary Group, a firm whose customers range from large businesses to hitherto unconnected consumers. “It’s going to happen here in Africa first and most consequentially.”
Ignite, which operates in nine African countries, has products that include a basic panel that powers three light bulbs and a phone charger, as well as solar-powered irrigation pumps, stoves and internet routers, and industrial systems. Customers use mobile money to “unlock” a pay-as-you-go meter.
Yariv Cohen, Ignite’s CEO, reckons that the typical $3 per month spent by consumers is less than what they previously paid for kerosene and at phone-charging kiosks. He describes how farmers are more productive because they do not have to get home before dark and children are getting better test scores because they study under bulbs. One family in Rwanda used to keep their two cows in their house because they feared rustlers might come in the dark; now the cattle snooze al fresco under an outside lamp and the family gets more sleep.
...That is one eye-catching aspect of Africa’s solar revolution. But most of the continent is undergoing a more subtle—and significant—experiment in decentralised, commercially driven solar power. It is a trend that could both transform African economies and offer lessons to the rest of the world."

Toronto people! Need furniture for cheap and can pick it up literally today (Monday April 29th)? I'm in the Annex, moving, and need to offload a bunch of stuff asap as in either before 5pm today or at like 9am on Tuesday. You have to come get it though and if able, ideally pay me like $20-50 cash for most things but if you are in a bind, I'm fine giving them for free.
Items that must gtfo:
-Blackbrown Ikea Malm double bedframe that lifts up for underbed storage*
-Small blackbrown Ikea table with 2 chairs (danderyd/ingolf I think)
-32" tv
-tiny blackbrown ikea tv stand, whatever their cheapest smallest one was. Free with tv if you want it.
-Small grey couch with double pull out bed*
-Brown faux leather armchair (sears rip)
-Black desk with one large drawer across the whole width. Has scuffs but 🤷‍♀️ (sears rip)
- Black 5 drawer dresser (sears rip)
- Portable AC unit. There is a tear in the hose that can probably be fixed with duct tape, but I leave that to the new owner.
- 2×4 Ikea Kallax in grey
- Half sized grey bookcase (wayfair)
Message me if you want something and can come get it. I can take pics in the morning if you ask for them too.
*bring 2 people. My back sucks and I cannot help you carry them. Also bed disassembly is up to you if desired but I do have tools you can use on this end.

Emergency mutual aid request
Alright so as predicted the apartments rejected our application (I fucking knew it. $100 down the shitter) and there's like, nowhere else available until November. Which means....Roommate is going to stay with his mother and I will likely be sleeping rough. I'd like to avoid that (especially during a pandemic spike thanks to the Eris variant which will be rocketing around the city shelters). My chronically ill ass will probably not make it lmao.
And I dont really have any couch surfing options.
Surprisingly it wasnt my application that rejected us but a third party with too much medical debt. Which he didnt tell us about.
Anyhow I know I wont find a place for myself within ten days but if I had another 30 days I might have a chance, so, I'm hoping to check into a cheapo extended stay for a month.
Cheapest I can find is for $1500ish
Tumblr media
I set up a ko-fi goal here
or
My cashapp is $kingsevil
Any $$ left over is going toward a storage unit for my things. Afterwards, well, ball is in my court I guess. Gotta find a place!

As women it's incredibly important that we develop a number of practical skills, chiefly among them being construction. The cost of homes/rentals is skyrocketing and unlikely to come down. If you do not wish to be snared in a capitalist misery grind for the rest of your lives, you need to band together with other women to acquire unrestricted land. Climate change dictates that land be high north (touching Canada's ass or Alaska).
This lady and her husband both have YouTube channels that you can learn from. Even if you don't have the means to begin assembling resources as yet, you can still familiarize yourself with basic concepts. You'll need a range of power tools and batteries for said tools. I recommend pawn shops. Manual tools as well, up to and including a bow saw. If you purchase a kit, then you don't have to do the measuring/cutting yourself. Just lay the foundation and assemble/insulate/plumb/wire (I recommend that your pipes and wiring by VISIBLE or EASY TO ACCESS.) Composting toilets and greywater reed beds are preferable for permacultural purposes. Bathroom, kitchen, and laundry must be near each other because they involve water and you do not want water damage nuking your structural integrity. In fact, a shared space for bathroom/laundry and high volume cooking is wise, preferably built with materials water won't destroy such as brick or stone. Slap twin wall polycarbonate roofing on that bad boy and the space doubles as your greenhouse.
Kits from this maker ship free to any business address with a forklift. The uninsulated shell kits are cheapest. A natural insulation such as wool is best. But insulation can be anything. If all else fails, extra high lofted barns from Home Depot/Lowe's do just fine converted into homes. Shipping containers are fine too, but will require cutting you may not be comfortable with.
Just some food for thought. Get the creative juices flowing. Sometimes you just have get out there and figure shit out.

Please Help A Mostly Queer Homeless Family Out This Pride Month?
So we have gotten our overdrafts covered! All without overdraft fees (double yay)! So that's one less thing to worry about. I have a loan repayment coming out again tomorrow, now that I have money in my account, and I'm waiting on the other loan to go through since the website says there's a payment pending.
But we need help with three things still:
1 - Gas & laundry money. We have to go to Fallbrook again this week (probably on the 8th, since my mom and I will have mail to pick up that day) to pull all the laundry out of our upstairs storage unit, wash it, and put it back in, along with spraying the front of it with Lysol air freshener and butting in a charcoal deodorizer, because it smells like cat urine and we'll get kicked out if we don't take care of it soon. We don't have the money of strength to move two units out, so we're going to do what we can to minimize the odor. But I need $40 for gas (it's cheapest at the 7-11 in Bonsall, since I can save 11 cents a gallon) and $20 for laundry to cover an extra wash and a dry that will get it all dry.
2 - A hotel room for my mom's 50th high school reunion/a manicure for my mother. I know it seems frivolous, but my mom graduated from a high school in the area and this is the first reunion after one of the big celebratory people in her class has died, plus it's the 50th, which is a pretty big milestone. We need a hotel for three days to keep the cats out of the car and to have a place to shower/get ready/leave the kidlet for the actual reunion (there's also an all-class picnic which is during the day that the kidlet is invited to, but we don't want the cats in the sun all day). We need it for the 24th through the 26th. We want to try and stay at the Motel 6 on Pio Pico Drive, as the room is all tile and the TV accommodates my son's X-Box, which will keep him entertained while we're gone. I'd also like to get my mom a manicure because her nails keep breaking from still being brittle after chemo, and she deserves a treat. We're looking at $400 for all of this.
3 - Anything off our Amazon wish list. We just ordered new medicine storage bags for me and my mom, as ours have been ruined by the cats/time, and we're going to add food to the list as we have storage space in the car for it, but I'm getting signs I'm going to start my menstrual cycle soon, and I could really use the portable heating pad. And anything else already on the list would be a huge help. The list is here.

Wind Beat Coal Two Months in a Row for U.S. Electricity Generation. (New York Times)
Wind turbines generated more electricity than coal-burning power plants across the United States in March and April, outstripping the dirtiest fuel for two consecutive months for the first time, according to the Energy Information Administration.
The crossover in wind and coal generation is the latest milestone in the country’s energy transition as renewables rise and coal declines. In recent years, breakthroughs in technology have lowered the cost of building new wind turbines, solar panels and battery storage, helping renewable energy replace coal as the cheapest power source in many places.
Renewable energy has also gotten a boost from tax credits awarded under the Inflation Reduction Act, the climate law Congress passed in 2022. And states have passed regulations mandating that utilities transition away from fossil fuels, particularly coal. More than 20 states — including Minnesota, North Carolina and Nebraska — have enacted legislation that requires utilities to get all their electricity from clean, carbon-free sources by 2050 or before.
Those three factors — shifts in the economics of energy, federal tax credits and state mandates — have led to explosive growth in renewable energy in recent years, said Timothy Fox, a managing director at ClearView Energy Partners, a consulting firm.

An Empty Ramen Bowl
~ itto x reader ~ (Fluffy, Slow Burn)
summary: ((based off the storyline of my own Genshin! OC)) Reader is an Inazuman born and raised, known for her prowess and academic achievements in her field along with her dedication to her talent and heartfelt career: the owner of her own high end restaurant. Starting off a bit slower than she’d like, a certain oni takes a liking to her place, the food, and the person running it.
author’s note: hello!! i wanted to start writing again so here’s my first piece after a while! might make a series if it doesn’t flop, please enjoy me writing about my fav and indulging in him 🙏🏾❤️
~~~~
New days meant new chances to grow. New days meant new sunlight that hadn’t touched the earth yet. New days meant more time not to waste!
With the hum of a kettle in the other room, I sat myself up and stretched, enjoying the warmth of sundays through my window before flipping the blankets from my body and swinging my legs to the other side. with yet another stretch, i deemed the noise of the kettle unbearable and got up to turn it off.
The kettle steamed as i poured some in a cup to make my tea, knowing i’d have plenty to eat once i got to my restaurant. “The Ramen Bowl” wasn’t my favorite choice to use as the restaurant name, but when asked out of the blue by family members with a crate in hand, you make up pretty… creative things on the spot. And i hated not sticking to my word so here we were.
with tea in hand and a good enough down my throat, it began to really start off my day. A shower that lasted no more than ten minutes, washing every aspect that needed to be to function through my day. washing my face and brushing my teeth came next, along with putting on lotion and fixing up my hair to be presentable.
i had set my usual outfit out the night before, as i usually did, and slipped into it seamlessly. socks and shoes were next, followed by my bag and keys along with the menus’s id made to restock the ones that had flown away in the recent storm. thankfully no real damage was done.
with the start of my day finished, i turned off every light and blew out every candle id lit, the sunlight from open windows illuminating my home even more than preivously said sources had done. i walked out into the beautiful world and locked my door behind me, another good day. another chance to make more customers.
the commute was short, i didn’t live far from the city, just outside of Konda Village overlooking the vast sea surrounding my nation. i enjoyed the walk, it gave me more reason to wake up everyday. enjoying the sights, picking fruits from the trees that had them hanging from their branches. avoiding any samurai and hillichurls (to the best of my ability) on the paths. i wasn’t all too worried about the samurai, that were looking for fights but not enough to refuse food or smaller amounts of mora like some sort of toll.
arriving at my restaurant, i once again recognized how.. off putting the location seemed. just behind the Komore Teahouse with a small slanted walk way down to its entrance, if you didn’t know my restaurant was there you’d have guessed it was a storage unit for the teahouse.
a down payment of 60,000 mora and monthly payments of 5,000 mora didn’t exactly get you as much as you’d think.
i kept the walkway clean, the entrance spotless and the counter that opened up to an outdoor bar area with the front drink and order counters just behind it could be seen, the kitchen behind a wall that was just behind the drink counter.
my key fumbled in the lock just a bit, a nod to the rusted lock that seems to deteriorate every time the key was inserted. many things needed to be fixed, but those many things weren’t the cheapest or the most important. nobody was stealing uncooked noodles and radishes anyway.
my usual routine for opening was complete, with cups, the new menus, chairs, appliances turned on and my ingredients in their respective places, on came to the most pressing matter of the day, advertising to passers—
“Hellooo!!” a voice called, making my skin jump from my body at the booming sound. i stood in the kitchen, readying my signs and posters as a few dropped from my startled reaction.
a customer? already? i just opened and this was new a voice id never heard. no one had came by yesterday, no one let me know they’d be coming. what if it’s the health department? would they come to check-
“Excuse me? is anybody there? i saw your sign by the walkway, me and my gang are pretty hungry but take your time!! i see you’ve only just opened so no rush!” the voice called again, snapping me from my thoughts to the realization that not only was it a customer, it was multiple customers.
i rushed to the gap between the kitchen and the front counter before catching myself and taking a breath. professional, you must be professional.
i stepped out into the space and laid eyes on a group of men along with a shorter woman in purple. one of the men in particular was large, an understatement at that. he was heavyset with muscle, sporting a well fitting cape with a chest adornments that exposed most of his chest and midsection, to which red markings could be seen vividly. he wore baggier pants from what i could see from my spot behind the counter and red markings down his cheeks as well. two red horns sat atop his head and white hair with red tips framed his face.
the woman beside him as mentioned before was smaller, having sat herself in a stool to more properly scout the area i presumed. she wore a black decorated mask and thigh high leg armor, purple throughout her look. her hair was green and pulled into what seemed like a spiral in the back of her head, her midsection also clearly visible in her attire.
the group of men behind them were pretty less stylized, wearing matching outfits that seemed to be uniforms and what i assumed to be the case as the voice i’d heard called them his “gang”.
“Hey, there you are! i was worried the place was abandoned.” the taller male laughed, same grin on his face and a menu in hand.
“Good morning, i understand you’re open?” the woman began, ignoring the male’s boisterous remarks.
“Uh yes! Yes, we are open, welcome to The Ramen Bowl will all of you be dining?” I asked, looking once again over the sudden many people standing at my counter. counting up to five, i gulped, but was determined to do good work as i’d always promised myself.
“you betcha! the arataki gang is starving and one of my men noticed your shop so five bowls of your best ramen, please!” he once again smiled, his hand on his chest in prowess from the mention of what i guessed was his gang name.
the woman turned to him and muttered something i couldn’t quite catch, but when he made an ‘O’ shape with his mouth and a nod followed by mumbled ‘gotcha gotcha gotcha’, i prepared myself for what was next.
each gave me their order from the menu of eight meals, each ordering something different to which i was a little hesitant to tell them i was working alone and to apologize profusely before hand for any long waits. but i simply nodded my head and thanked them for their order, telling them they’d be out shortly and got myself back to the kitchen.
working as quickly as i could, i was able to finish the order in about an hour; a little longer than i had hoped but with the help of the pyro vision on my hip and a mission, i put the bowls on a tray and added all of the add ons for every meal, along with chopsticks and a chirirenge for each bowl.
I walked back out with the tray above my head to the counter to see the five still sitting in their stools as the white haired man laid his head on the counter in seemingly anguish. but as he got a whiff of my approach i don’t think i’d ever seen a man get so excited for a meal.
“I apologize for the wait, here are each of your orders, enjoy!” I smiled, happy to have worked a small sweat with a bigger order after not having many in a while.
each person seemed pleasantly surprised with the meals, each having a different reaction from utter surprise, scarfing down their food, a small smile after every bite and so on. i couldn’t prevent the smile that spread across my face at the sight, how i enjoyed watching my food be enjoyed.
i decided staring at my customers eating without something to do was pointless (or just creepy) and reluctantly walked back into the kitchen, cleaning up my stations and putting pots and pans and such in the sink to be cleaned. i stashed away the extra ingredients i’d put out just in case of an emergency and was proud of myself to not have needed them.
“Ms. Chef!!” The familiar voice called again, recognizing it as the man who was larger than life at my counter. i put down my rag and walked back out to the front, a smile on my face as i looked between the five, most bowls already empty if not almost finished.
“Yes? How was the food? i hope it was to your—“
“This was delicious!!” The man yelled, his men and the woman beside him nodding in agreement if not giving their own remarks. tossing his head back to scrape what sounded like the actual porcelain into his mouth from his bowl, he slammed the bowl down on the counter to emphasize his claim. “i haven’t had ramen this good in forever! can i get another bowl?” he asked.
the woman beside him gave him a look and he immediately withered into his seat. “Scratch that,” he huffed, a suddenly defeated look on his face.
“I can make you another! on the house, i don’t get as many customers nowadays so i’d like to thank you for coming!” i chirped, adrenaline running through my veins.
the woman wiped her mouth and put her mask back on, placing her chopsticks and chirirenge on her bowl to finish. “the food was wonderful, thank you for the meal, and i appreciate you accommodating my boss his appetite is certainly larger than most. i cannot however not pay for the meal.” she said, putting out a pouch and handing me the respective mora for the food, along with extra to pay for the meal i was about to prepare for the man beside her.
“Ohhh thank you, Shinobu!! you’re so kind!!” he cooed, hugging the woman who seemed unfazed by the action with her arms at her sides with a slight nod.
“you’re welcome, boss, i’ll take the gang with me and we can meet you in the center of the city to continue the next meeting.” she replied after he had released her, getting up from her stool along with the other three men that had accompanied them, the three waving and giving their thanks with proud bows.
“alright i’ll be there soon!!” He called, waving as the four left, turning back to me with a big smile. “alright let’s see this menu again, everything looks so good i had to bite my arm just to pick one the first time! how could i pick one the second?” he said, seemingly talking to himself although it also felt as though he was prompting me.
in response, i stepped forward and pressed my fingertip to a bowl that i enjoyed making and had named my signature dish. “this one’s delicious in my opinion, i enjoy the process and also eat it myself as well if you’d like to try that, sir.” i recommended, removing my hand before he could say much.
he looked over my recommendation and nodded, as if deciphering a puzzle. “well if the chef recommends it how could i pass that up? a bowl of your famous ramen please! but hold the beans, im deeeathly allergic and not exactly ready to go out like that.” he laughed. folding his arms over themselves on the counter.
“understood, sir!” i smiled, making a mental note of this deathly allergy. i turned to leave after he gave his order before he raised a hand with another ‘hey!’
turned back to look at him expecting another accommodation of some sort.
“you don’t have to be so professional, miss! i’m Atataki Itto, the one and only i’m sure you’ve heard of my many fantastic and good deeds around inazuma and have been smiling so hard as you’ve been in the presence of my—“
“i apologize, sir but i have not heard of you, actually.”
“.. oh. well now you have!! feel free to call me arataki itto, or just itto, or whatever other amazingly cool nickname you can think of for me,” he shrugged, flashing his suddenly contagious smile.
“i’m (Y/n) (L/n), it’s a pleasure to serve you, Itto.” i replied with a small bow, slightly happy about his happy personality as it seemed. “your order will be out shortly.”
Help a transman afford his motel room while he waits for his apartment to be ready. The whole story is under the cut.
Venmo: blue-bird3
Cashapp: $blue0bird
I didn't want to say anything until I was 100% certain, and I just got the call today.
I am not eligible to renew my current lease. This was the expected outcome, but I'm always a sucker for a last-minute miracle (even if I know it's not coming) I originally had a roommate but he left in October to go stay with his girlfriend and the office agreed to let me ride out the rest of the lease which has been a huge struggle.
I am currently on the wait list for a new apartment. I called today, and they said I'm in the top 40 applicants, which means another 6 months wait at most. It could happen sooner, but knowing my luck, I'll be waiting the full 6 months.
Until then, I'm mostly gonna be homeless. None of my friends have space for me or live close enough. I have a full-time job, but the pay is shit. I can't even afford a 2 week stay at a shity motel (I get paid every 2 weeks)
I have also been fighting with foodstamps since October because they keep losing my documents. I'm trying to get this sorted before my lease ends so I don't have to worry about food. I've managed to find a cheap storage unit for my stuff (good thing I basically own nothing). The biggest concern is the cost of the motel.
The cheapest room I can find that's close to my work is $1,190 for 2 weeks. I barely make $800.
Thankfully, I have a little time. My lease ends in February, and I have set my move out date for the 29th. Giving myself about 2 months to raise whatever I can.
yesterday friend asked if mom would consider selling our house to her, immediately after telling me how in debt she was and what little she'd be left with after selling her house. and then went, 'oh. but where would you go?' and it's so so funny because she knows how dire the rental situation is around here, and the housing situation. she's basically subscribed to all the realtor websites and knows when anything goes up for sale and how wild the prices are. she also knows we're just about as bad off as she is with money. I just looked at the local-ish rentals and the cheapest is $1600 for a studio. we're living off of $1300 currently. total. me with no job and my sick mom and our four cats. and the storage unit in florida we have to keep paying for and presumably the second one we'd need here to empty the house. where the fuck would we go indeed.
