Cooking crush ep2
Tumblr media
I love Dynamite. He’s really a great friend but not to the point where I think he has a crush on Prem or would bury a body for him.
Tumblr media
How…. Tiny is Gun ATP? How does look the youngest what deal did he make with the devil
Tumblr media
So handsome
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr Ten doesn’t like to be touch and Prem is unintentionally touchy absjsospmedbh idk I think I’ve heard that before. But Off Jumpol wants to change for Gun because Gun is perfect the way he is.
Tumblr media
Well here I thought Dr. Ten’s person he missed was his Mom but I guess it must be a living person he’s sending things to. But Dr. Ten still seems overly whipped for Prem if it’s a romantic connection he’s cooking for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born to fall in love. Gahhhh adorable just too sweet.
I also like they aren’t making a big deal out of the childhood connections these photos mean a lot to each of them though for diff reasons. Dr. Ten because it’s the first time he felt happy eating with his dad. Prem finding he loved cooking because it made Ten so incredibly happy.

Finally got time to watch a decent Bollywood movie after a long time, and it did not disappoint! Rocky aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani brings modern ideas to the template that we all loved and grew up with (scenic dances, classical joint choreo, Y2K family drama with humour, complete with gorgeous hero and heroine get-up) which hadn't been visited by any directors in the past decade.

Jamie Tartt has been Joelinton-ed
Tumblr media
Introduced my football mad dad to Ted Lasso and first thing he pointed out was that Jamie’s move to a box to box attacking mid was exactly what Eddie Howe did to Joelinton when the system at Newcastle wasn’t working with him as an out and out striker.
My dad has now named this a phenomenon and is just pitching it for any nimble striker who isn’t scoring goals in the Prem

WeTV has the uncut version of Cooking Crush, and I'm upset about it reporting the additions. I did it for the first episode, and I'm going to continue because it's wild what is being left out! Here's what you missed if you watched the YouTube version of episode two:
The Chefs go eat in the cafeteria, but Prem is too worried that Ten will pop up to eat.
Tumblr media
Fire spots the group and confronts Dy over the contact information/phone call. Fire tells Dy it wasn't okay for Dy to trick him and chases him (Dy calls Fire "Firefly")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They place bets that Dy is going to get punched.
Tumblr media
Fire chases Dy through the tennis courts,
Tumblr media
but Dy, who easily could've escaped, CLOSES A GATE so Fire can catch him! (Fire does NOT hit him but Dy kinda wants him to)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fire, once again, tells Dy how he doesn't like being teased or pranked and what Dy did wasn't funny to him. (This is all in the first five minutes!)
Tumblr media
So later, when Dy comes back and gives Fire the right contact info, Fire teaches him how to play tennis.
Tumblr media
Ten not-so-secretly tries to watch Prem making the food.
Tumblr media
And it's clear he already likes him because little hearts keeping popping up as he watches Prem. (one of the hearts is right behind Prem, and another is popping up by the apron)
Tumblr media
And in case you missed it in the edited version, there is a heart behind Ten as he eats the food.
Tumblr media
After the date with Jane, Dy texts Firefly, and Firefly, who was thinking about Dy, lies and tells Dy it was a GREAT DATE WITH JANE (he puts it in caps)
Tumblr media
Which upsets Dy, but his friend keeps telling him to leave Fire alone.
Tumblr media
Long before calling Ten, Prem considered selling EVERYTHING to get the money. His phone, his laptop, his watch. Everything!
Tumblr media
Prem doesn't ask anything over the phone. Ten picks up on something being wrong over the phone, so Prem actually shows up at Ten's house the next day to apologize.
Tumblr media
Ten yells at Prem and tells him he doesn't want lessons anymore because Prem isn't consistent. (This is the halfway point)
Tumblr media
Prem tells him that his grandmother scolded him and he saw the error in his ways. He begs for a second chance on bended knee which is a direct parallel to what Ten did the first episode.
Tumblr media
After Ten tastes the food, he immediately transfers the 50,000 baht, and the sister questions how Prem got it so fast.
Tumblr media
She says she appreciates Prem and tells him she won't lose it this time.
Tumblr media
Once Prem leaves the apartment after the cooking show, Dy tries to tell his homie ghost stories, which he is not about that life.
Tumblr media
After shopping, Ten asks Prem why he goes to the market for the food. He tells Prem he can go to the supermarket instead since he thinks Prem is trying to save him money. He said he'll pay extra for the food, but Prem tells him he likes going to the market. Ten then tells Prem to follow him home.
Tumblr media
So Firefly (I'm keeping the nickname) and Dy are far more fleshed out in the unedited version and we already see the reason they are the second couple, while Ten and Prem are already in love with each other.
Tumblr media
I'm salty like those Great Lakes in Utah.

FRIENDS. FRIENDS.
Cooking Crush is undoubtedly one of the best shows airing at the moment.
Today's episode gave me so much life that I don't even know where to begin, but I'm gonna try my best to pull two (2) coherent thoughts out of my melting brain.
1. The Three Must-Eat-eers Conflict and Resolution:
Last episode had set up such a perfect conflict that's rarely handled well in any media: the bruised feelings of the single friend when the rest of the gang gets into committed romantic relationships. Most of the time this scenario shows up in media, one party will be framed as selfish and/or jealous. None of that nonsense here; Cooking Crush has always taken the friendship of its characters very seriously, especially Prem, Dynamite and Samsee. Samsee’s feelings were hurt not just because of his own fears of being abandoned by his friends, he was also (rightfully) mad that he ended up as the only friend who was kept out of the loop of knowing that his best friends had boyfriends now. But Prem and Dynamite did not intend to do this, and they were also right to set their own pace in making their relationship public, but it’s just that the string of accidental reveals happened in an order that made Samsee feel like a third-wheeler in his own home, twice over.
Cooking Crush treats its characters with a lot of kindness and empathy and it shows. Prem and Dy wanting to keep their relationships under wraps for the time being is valid. Samsee feeling hurt and lost, and opting out of the competition is valid. This episode begins with the drama of the cooking competition and works its comedy (thank you for the chuckles, wildly gesticulating White Man) and romance (my poor heart swooned all over my rib cage when Ten helped Prem into his chef clothes). And when the time came for the big reconciliation, the show does not sweep away Samee’s very hurt feelings just because Prem and Dy struggled without Samsee for most of the first round of cooking. He apologizes for ditching them and Dy was having none of it.
Tumblr media
(Dy, my perfect child, oh how I love you with my entire heart)
Perfect resolution. and a well-earned, most adorable group hug to bookend it. I truly could not be more in love with this show. Or can I?
Tumblr media
2. Miscommunication? Nah.
Well, this episode also featured the Annoying Asshole Chef dude who’s determined to pursue Prem even though it is very clear that Prem is not interested and would reject his advances, if only he stuck around long enough to actually get rejected and not run away from him like a goddamn coward. I was furious when he positioned himself as an actual option for Prem to Ten in this episode, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment Ten chose to call him out on his bullshit.
But y’all. The very inappropriate hug. The well-deserved punch to his stupid face. The storm-off. All of it had me very concerned that this is all barrelling towards a classic miscommunication moment.
BUT NO.
THE SHOW SAID THERE WILL BE NO STUPID MISCOMMUNICATION.
NOT IN THIS HOUSE.
My problem with the miscommunication trope is that it ultimately positions the couple we are supposed to be rooting for as a weak team. Honest communication and vulnerability in a new-ish relationship is not easy, and it takes a lot of courage to take that step to be the one to spell out the facts, and trust that the other person likes them well enough to keep an open ear, and believe them when they say a meddling cowardly asshole is trying to get in the way of their relationship. Ten’s bravery was perfectly contrasted with the sliminess of the Annoying Cowardly Chef (I refuse to learn his name, he is not worth my braincells).
Oh but Ten wasn’t done yet!
Tumblr media
I absolutely adore how he moves the conversation away from that pesky little pest of a human towards something that matters more: his desire to make things official with Prem. The Annoying Asshole Chef was not the focus of the conversation, Ten and Prem are. And it all culminates in an incredible kiss and a camera swoop that already has a permanent little shrine in my silly little head.
Tumblr media
TAKE MY HEART, COOKING CRUSH. TREAT IT WELL.

I truly love that Ten is just In Love. He's not gonna hide, he's not gonna be shy, he wants the world to know that he loves Prem and that he isn't afraid to love him big and loud. It's darling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prem being the sensible one is my favorite thing in the world. Just look at him! Trying to talk sense into his doctor boyfriend about the whole 'maybe our families should know before the whole world does'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But also... duh? Ten never talks to his father. Why would he have had a chance to talk about this with him? If this were an American show, Ten wouldn't have spoken to his father in ten years despite living in the same house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most sensible chef... who also has a healthy family relationship with everyone who loves him unlike our darling doctor who would probably be happy if his father just left him to live his life without involvement if it weren't for cultural pressures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's going to be an issue no matter what, darling. Ten's dad is a shitty dad who doesn't trust his son and cannot be kind to him no matter what he does and refuses to talk to him.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe that they saved this all for episode 12. No doom, just the threat of doom. (But also, bitch, your son took that home! He knows what it is! TRY TALKING TO HIM.)
Tumblr media
The babies are there for each other and they know and understand each other and I love them so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prem is every ounce of Ten's courage and love that he thought he lost with his mother and I love them so much.

Goodbye Cooking Crush
Tumblr media
Aw man, I am so sad this wonderful little show is over. It delivered everything I needed and held up all the way through its run. Everything came together in this finale for some great final payoffs, and the characters stayed true. When we were watching the finale I said to @neuroticbookworm and @twig-tea that this show is writing porn, because all of the narrative threads build and converge in such a satisfying way. I posted a couple weeks ago that this show is exactly what you want from a good romcom, and I stand by it. Great outing for OffGun and a very rewarding show that I will surely be rewatching many times.
As expected, this week delivered a solid, nuanced ending for Ten's family conflict. I loved the way Ten sat Prem down at the family table, took the chair opposite his father at the other end of the table in a clear power move, and told him in no uncertain terms that Prem was his boyfriend and he had to accept it. And his dad did not have a sudden personality transplant; he pushed back and challenged Prem to prove his integrity. It made sense to me that Prem wanted to pay that money back; the money scam from the beginning of their relationship has been weighing on him the whole time, and he doesn't want any shred of doubt lingering over his relationship with his in-laws. My favorite part of that whole sequence was Prem's grandma finally finding out about the money and getting out her switch; this was never Prem's burden to bear alone and I'm glad he learned his lesson about not asking for help.
So Ten's dad was forced to accept Prem when he came through on his promise, and he even offered a classic Asian parent version of an apology by coming to Prem's restaurant to acknowledge him, which is more than I expected from him. My favorite thing about that final scene at the restaurant is that Ten's dad hasn't really changed and he and Ten are not suddenly getting along; their conversation was still adversarial even as he finally explained a couple things, and in the end he was left to eat at the table alone. No unearned parental 180 here. They are not suddenly a big happy family, but they've settled on a detente everyone can live with. It feels right.
And in another family drama, Fire finally found the courage to tell his mother how much she has hurt him, and after an initial rejection, she realized she didn't want to lose Fire and offered him acceptance. I would have liked a bit more breathing room in this plot because her turn felt a little too easy, but it's a side story so I get that they were time constrained. It was nice to see Fire finally stand up for her, and Dynamite begrudgingly accepted into the family. I liked that Dy's family didn't magically appear; not all families will accept their queer children, and that is the reality he has to live with. But it must have felt somewhat healing to see that happen for Fire and know he was a big part of giving Fire the courage to finally come out.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the Three Must-Eat-Ers lost the cooking competition but won the hearts of many with the touching story of their final dish, and built careers bolstered by their show fandom. I was so pleased to get the flash forward to show us that Prem did get to open his chef's table restaurant, with Ten's full support (and with rings of some sort on, not sure if they're engaged or married but they are definitely committed). It was the very sweet cherry on top of the ice cream sundae of their romance. Ten and Prem, Communication Kings, are going down as one of my all-time favorite bl couples.
I am agnostic on the final Samsee/Pang reveal, given my hopes for a Samsee/Metha pairing. I'm not mad at the show for not going there--it would definitely have been pairing the spares to put Samsee and Metha together, which I generally do not go in for--and am mostly happy that Samsee found love and Metha is still part of the gang. I would have also loved to see those bullies get some comeuppance, but honestly, bullies often win, and it didn't feel like a true loss for our boys so I'm good with it. This was a solid finale for a feel good show and I will miss it dearly.

Fire and Dynamite Can Sit With Me
There have been a couple of really excellent posts about Fy and Dy on my dash this evening, and I wanted to yes, and them but am making my own post because things were getting long. First, if you haven't read this post by @waitmyturtles or this one by @lurkingshan or this one by @bengiyo do that first!
In addition to the moments all of these brilliant people have pointed out, I wanted to highlight a couple of other things.
First, like Ben mentioned, we find out later in the series that Dynamite first fell for Fire because he beat up bullies for him. The important thing this informs about how Dynamite interacts with Fire in the early episodes is that he sees Fire's fierceness as safety. This is important because Fire is RUDE, and it alienates other people from him. It also means that he knows Fire is a straightforward person who is not afraid to punch people he's genuinely mad at. Dy knows what Fire looks like when he's genuinely mad.
Tumblr media
Second, one of the things that Dynamite picks up about Fire is how much attention Fire actually pays him. He says himself, if you weren't interested in me and you were interested in Jane, you wouldn't notice or care about my presence.
Third, Dy did not move in with Sansee in order to stalk Fire. It was a series of coincidences that led to them both being in that condo building. And when he says it's fate thanks to a goddess granting his wish, Fire doesn't disagree, he just curses out the goddess for granting Dy's wish.
Fourth, Dy is excellent at reading people and situations. You have to be when you have been bullied for your attitude in the past. He's constantly correctly reading Ten and his reactions to Prem, and he takes encouragement from how Fire reacts to him up until Fire legitimately wavers, and as mentioned by Shan in the previous linked post, that's when he backs off. Dy is not ever pushing when he can tell he's really unwanted, and he doesn't stand in Fire's way. He encouraged Fire to speak to Jane; he even got Fire Jane's contact info. He continues to flirt in front of Jane but he can tell she doesn't mind--we see him look at her and clock her reactions in those scenes. And he steps in immediately with Fire's mom to take the heat for Jane being in Fire's condo, without even talking about it, because he knows how damaging it can be to be cut off by a family member for being a disappointment.
Tumblr media
So much about consent is body language and nuance. I'm not saying "no means yes" or whatever nonsense, but pushing when someone is genuinely uncomfortable even if they're not saying no is so much worse than sticking around even when someone tells you to go away because you can tell they're relaxed and not actually upset. The contrast in power dynamics, reading of body language, and consent vs non-consent is strong between Fire and Chef Changma, and Changma heartily loses that competition.
Despite clocking Fire as closeted from jump, Dy does not push Fire to come out. As Ben mentioned, he puts his own friend group--friends who at this point are functioning as his found family replacing the family that abandoned him, like so many of us have had to do--at risk to respect Fire's right to come out at his own pace.
Tumblr media
Fire at first defaults to staying in the closet. But when he sees the toll that this has on Dynamite he decides to push himself to come out anyway, even though Dy is not making any demands.
As Turtles mentioned in their linked post, when Fire stops fighting himself with his whole being, he's soft. And this is how he is used to expressing love, it's how he expresses his love to his mother too.
Tumblr media
In short (lol), I LOVE THEM YOUR HONOUR.

no but like chef chang ma is really good commentary on literal predators that abuse their power & create a whole relationship in their head, bc like prem has shown literal ZERO interest in him yet he's making a fool of himself like this??? the only moment where prem was actually all smiles around him was when he went to chang ma's restaurant & was fangirling about meeting him... while he was on a whole ass fucking date with ten lmaoooooo. yet this literal manchild constructed a whole fantasy in his head & has abused his power as a celebrity prem admires AND a judge on the show prem is competing in to force himself on prem. honestly I kinda like this storyline bc it not only feels realistic but also highlights how DRAMATICALLY different tenprem's relationship is like bruh... they've been communicating & reassuring each other for many episodes, ask for consent, listen to each other's words but also body language, like... chang ma really channeled the audacity of a cis straight white dude to think he stood a chance against ten LMAO wtf is he on

Cooking Crush Ep 5 Stray Thoughts
Last week, Prem took Ten to the restaurant of his favorite chef on that cooking competition show. Ten wasn't impressed with the food, and was not pleased with how enamored Prem was with this chef. Afterwards, Ten took Prem to a restaurant he likes and they bonded further about how much they like being with each other. Meanwhile, Jane ended things with Fire, Fire's mom came over and said foul things to Jane, and Dynamite helped cover for them. Finally, the cooking trio hopes to compete in the show, but their rivals are terrible and rude.
I love seeing Gun work with his actual sister. I don't know that I've seen Gun play against someone who was supposed to be his sibling in a long time.
This is why you gotta maintain a healthy balance of nosey. We are reading way too much into Ten getting flowers.
See, it was for Ten's mom. She must have passed when Ten was young.
Dish 5: I'd Like to Make Deep-Fried Shrimp Cakes With You, Chef
Ah, Ten blames his dad for not paying enough attention to his family, and thinks he should have noticed how sick his own wife had become.
Gun is so beautiful. I've been a fan for almost ten years now and he just keeps getting more beautiful.
I'm not entirely certain how all this physical contact and flirting in the kitchen before the new wife is supposed to help, but it is amusing at least.
Wow, OffGun dancing was not on my list for this show, but I am not complaining.
Even if I was wealthy, I would be curious why my kid spent damn-near $9,000 in a week.
Genuinely don't think Ten's dad is off-base here. He thinks he's shutting down someone who is an amateur scammer and distraction for his son.
Not me tearing up at Ten showing Prem's picture to his mom.
Ten is down bad waking up that early to make soup for Prem.
I love Samsee and Dynamite.
Chef Chang Ma, you are also down bad, but I would also smile at a Gun character like that.
These 3B shits are finally getting embarrassed.
🎶 Hey, jealousy. Hey, jealousy. 🎶
Suddenly, a PSA about sex work.
All these goddamn time skips. They better revisit what they skipped. It better include multiple dates and Samsee and Metha getting it on.
A tippy-toe kiss! How did we lead up to this??
I liked this episode a lot. I'm glad we understand the crux of the angst between Prem and his dad. I also enjoyed the dad putting a totally reasonable barrier between Prem and Ten. There wasn't much of Dynamite and Fire this week, but I like the little bit we got, and also the confirmation that Fire's sexual confusion may be grounded in a queer reality. I'm loving this.

scene number three! prem and ten chat before their food arrives at the motel
kills me. kills me. listen: imagine you dressed cute and went out with your crush — a guy so hot you literally had to slap yourself to be able to respond to him like a normal person — who wanted you to see his dream restaurant. you didn't have the best time, but you refuse to let that be how the evening goes, so you take him to a place you like, where the food is familiar, where you can sit face to face and talk comfortably, and there aren't any superstar chefs running around being hot and irritating
and your crush says to you point blank: for a second there, i was afraid you brought me here to punish-fuck me. also this jacket is supposed to get you laid
because. pals? i have zero idea how i would react to that. ZERO
