one of the things i see not mentioned a lot abt covid and lockdown is how it severely hindered the development of really little kids. not outgrowing biting or self-injury, or, for kids who are physically capable of not using diapers, still having accidents despite previously showing promise in potty training, or seriously delayed speech for kids that have the ability to speak, or walking significantly later than the usual milestones, or just not meeting milestones in general. kiddos, especially ages 1-5, need to be around other children. they learn through interacting with other kids their age, and their parents' teaching/only interacting with parents isn't enough to help them meet milestones. an entire generation of toddlers lost access to their biggest support during their most formative years. I'm seeing 10 year olds who still bite or self-injure and 4 year olds speaking at the level of 2 year olds. covid hurt our kids, really, really hurt them, and we don't ever talk about it

the other thing with the concept of worst timeline luz losing most (or all) of her memories of hunter is Just How Bad it would fuck her brain up. like i don't think it would quite be an "understanding willow" level catastrophe, because there's enough left to create a relatively coherent construct of the Self..... but i also think she'd be a fucking Wreck. there's a 100% chance belos would also gank everything he can find about wild magic, so like. the two biggest defining aspects of her childhood up in smoke.... i think she wouldn't trust her other memories at all. CONSTANT confusion. constant feeling like she's dreaming awake or like she's forgetting something really really Really important. if vee isn't with camila here then i think luz could Easily convince herself that what she Does remember of her upbringing was an elaborate fantasy. something she made up to cope with Whatever happened to her. because other realms don't exist and neither do demons and neither do witches and all of her memories are so jumbled and nonsensical and indistinct anyway.....
she's just a human. who was kidnapped by another human. and grew up in the human world. and that's all there is.
she's forgetting something.
she's always forgetting something.

when you have a neurological disability it's super great to also have a porch so you have a cozy little spot to hang out every time you forget your fucking keys

that being said the idea you could then take Jack, who has a fully developed brain & language process, and make him into a human infant without that being like. completely horrifying due to taking away an individual's entire way of utilising cognition.

yknow i think a lot of the really far-gone transfemme vs transmasc people who still play by the 6th grade milquetoast "trans women are targeted way more than trans men cause femininity is bad and masculinity is good In Our Society, so trans men get free acceptability passes" feminism forget that trans men/transmascs started life. as. little girls. we were mistaken, from birth, for baby girls. and we were raised by our parents to believe that we were little girls.
a lot of trans men and transmascs then grew up to be teenaged girls
a lot of trans men and transmascs were adult women too
and for a while we *believed* we were girls and women. some of us even WISHED we were girls and women (points at myself). and much more importantly, we were continually seen as girls and women. a lot of the time, we are STILL seen as girls and women, even with full fuckin beards and baritone voices. especially if we need to go to any kind of medical professional. this is what our free acceptability pass looks like?
its just so much more nuanced than these 'boys vs girls' people ever seem to care to think about. even binary trans folks dont have the same sense of cisgendered binary that cis people do. we literally cross from one fake end of the fake-binary to the other. thats where the trans in transgender comes from. i dont know how some other trans folks seem to forget that?? i don't know how, somewhere along the line, we forgot that trans men and transmascs also directly suffer under misogyny?
#my t#sorry for more gender based griping i saw smth on twitter that reminded me of this.#the bright spots of Little Girl euphoria i had in my childhood were rare and beautiful. i refuse to forget them.#my perception of myself i had as a child is important to me.#possibly in a different way to others because. yknow. i am plural.#and plural folks have a different brain and sense of understanding of themselves that singlets wont have. its just a neurological differenc#but my little girl self is an important part of my present day adult man self.#and looking at the adult trans men in my system who are still under my care today-#the little girls they were - however fucking briefly - are still important to me and to them too.#and i fully understand that a lot of other trans folks cannot think of themselves this way#but trans mens experiences of being mistaken for little girls are as important as trans womens experiences being mistaken for little boys#we are all trapped in the same systemic cycle of gender-based abusive conditioning.#really we just have to do away with assigning gender to baby bits completely. its weird.#trans men are either eternally confused women or just invisible#and crushed under the weight of maintaining a cis-man image.#i mean for fucks sake#my partner system and us have been talking about having a kid for ages#if i were to get pregnant i'd just have to accept the fact that i have to masquerade around as a woman for 9 months.#because there is NOTHING for pregnant transmascs.#nothing.#there aren't even a lot of gender neutral options for maternity clothing.#even the term 'maternity' denotes femininity and motherhood.#paternity clothing isn't a thing that exists for me for look forward to or even mildly worry about.#and i'm just talking about a *planned* pregnancy involving a trans man. what do yall think happens to transmascs with unwanted pregnancies.#what a privileged life i lead as a no-op no-hrt trans man. big cishet loves me because i am obviously exactly like a cis man now#just want people to stop infighting and being stupid tbh.#breaking: bro strider fictive gets really fuckin pressed about gender and systemic abuse again!

One of the weirdest things about finding out you're traumatized/mentally ill/neurodivergent as an adult is looking back at all the very obvious signs in your childhood and realizing none of the adults responsible for you were paying attention
#it really is a mindfuck#like all of yall were really asleep at the wheel here#me: exhibiting very obvious symptoms of neurodivergence and mental and physical illnesses#ever parent teacher coach and other authority figure i interacted with: shes just Like That.#fun fact i when i was in elementary school starting in 2nd grade id have to walk to the front of the classroom and read a section of the#board at a time and then go back to my desk and copy it from memory because I couldn't see well enough from my seat and not a single#teacher said or did anything about it until i was in fifth grade. guess who needed glasses.#like they didn't even ask they just let that happen until my fifth grade teacher was like. what are you doing. and i told her i couldn't#read the writing from two rows back and she told me to tell my mom i needed glasses#anyways ms. [redacted] you're the only valid mfer in this place#not even gonna get into the number of coaches who called me lazy or out of shape in middle/high school (even though i was playing multiple#sports a year) when i told them i couldn't breathe after running for only a minute or two. guess who has sports asthma.#maybe this is just being the middle child but like of you're not going to pay attention to me can u at least not immediately call me a liar#when i say something's wrong maybe#those aren't even mental/neurological those are very obvious and easily demonstrated physical issues and you STILL didn't say anything#not even gonna get into all the very obvious signs of mental illness and neurodivergence

Oh the way those PANS/PANDAS parents talk about their children’s illness get my hackles fucking raised. It’s like every “autism mom” I’ve ever heard talk. I’m not even writing off the idea that there may be cases in which an infection leads to an autoimmune response that causes neurological mental health changes in children. I can totally conceive of that being a thing we don’t totally understand yet. But the way these people approach it…. God. I know it’s got to be terrifying for parents if their kid suddenly develops OCD, ED, and/or tourette’s symptoms, but the scientific data is so severely lacking, and the language these parents use to talk about those experiences is. Very specific.
The proposed biological indicators for PANS are often present in people without the disorder, without any of the related symptoms. The current proposed diagnostic criteria is extremely generalized and doesn’t very rigorously provide ways to rule out differential diagnoses.
The proposed treatments of long term antibiotics and steroid usage can have dangerous side effects and extreme consequences.
But there are thousands of parents online who will insist it’s 100% real, it’s an epidemic, and they’ll use their numbers to attack anyone online who disagrees with them. Some of these kids may have symptoms that did genuinely arise because of an autoimmune response linked to infection. I wouldn’t write it off. Further scientific study is clearly needed. But it’s also just as likely to me that there are parents out there that just refuse to accept that their kid could be mentally ill for no single curable reason.
I say this as someone who, themselves, developed severe mental illness as a very young child. It’s possible your kid just does have trauma, just does have ocd, just does have depression, just does have tourettes. But these parents see their kids “suddenly” present symptoms and insist on correlating it with extremely common childhood infections. And then manage to find some medical professional somewhere who will actually agree to put their kid on long term antibiotics, and insist their kid’s mental illness just totally went away afterward!
And like. Sorry. But there’s no way for me to hear that and not be reminded of the parents who think red dye makes ADHD worse. Or the parents who think their children’s autism is caused by intestinal parasites, and insist that since they started making their kid drink a bleach solution they bought online their autism has “improved.” The science is inconclusive, everywhere you look there’s confirmation bias, and also.
Every time I hear parents talk about this, not one of them mentions how their child felt about their experience. It’s always “they developed all these tics and compulsions, they wouldn’t eat, they were paranoid, they became suicidal, it was SO scary and hard for me!” and it’s like. As someone who was once a very mentally ill child. Why do every single one of you fail to address this. They seem more concerned about how “scary” it is and how “different” their child has become than their child’s own internal experience of suffering.

Nearly everyone who has held a newborn infant has wondered what, if anything, it is like to be a baby. But of course, we cannot remember being a baby and babies can't talk.”
To provide a new perspective on when consciousness first emerges, the team built upon recent advances in consciousness science. In adults, some markers from brain imaging have been found to reliably differentiate consciousness from its absence, and are increasingly applied in science and medicine. This is the first time that a review of these markers in infants has been used to assess their consciousness.
Understanding when and to what degree consciousness first emerges should be high on the agenda of consciousness science. Not only would it have important implications for debates about the mechanisms underlying consciousness would also have important clinical, ethical, and perhaps even legal implication
Late-onset views versus early-onset view. Are infants born with or quickly developed consciousness or does it take a year or several months to develop consciousness
A particularly challenging question concerns the development of the infant’s awareness of its own body and its capacities for actio

I hate how like. There was / is so much pushback against the idea that periods make women overemotional and irrational, and while that was 100% all in good faith and the people who said so originally were using it as an excuse to be misogynists…. it’s completely true for some people including me.
Sometimes I’ll just feel like absolute shit for a number of days, get super delusional and convince myself ‘everyone hates me and I’m terrible’ then it ticks me off: oh my period must be coming! The problem with the amount of not only men who said that originally was that it was an invalidation of what are completely valid symptoms and emotions (often indicative of a literal disorder) that should be sympathized with, instead of made fun of for and used against a class of people.
Anyway it sucks. And I can’t “positive think” much out of it, it’s literally a biological phenomenon and makes me feel a foggy pressure in my head. Okay fun fact I can sometimes feel physically or hear strong emotions happening in my brain. But. Yeah. I kinda feel like ass and sometimes I do have the desire to be ‘validated’ for what happens to me and probably a lot of other people
