A humane architecture does not only have the power to heal us. The very act of making it is itself a healing act for all of us. There are no shortcuts to beautiful form. If you stand in front of the faucet of your kitchen sink and look at the beautiful shape of the drop of water you can realize that it forms slowly as gravity works on the tiny bit of water. You can not make that shape mechanically. Nor can we make babies from adding together bits and pieces. The child forms slowly through a process of division and specialization of cells.

This is the essence of the process of unfolding: moving slowly step by step from a less to more differentiated space.

Many of Alexander's eariler book were important to me. Perhaps A Pattern Language is the best known book. While I knoew of their existence I have not read and of the four book iof the nature of order. I was vrey excited to read this paper from 2003. It's well worth downloading and reading.

My latest essay. Comparing the notion of "pattern languages" across domains, like writing and architecture:

The way fiction writers wrote even 200 years ago bears little resemblance structurally to what a novel looks like today. Over time, writers learned what readers wanted and innovated around the edges while conforming to norms of structure that were mostly predictable to their contemporary audiences. Little by little, with incremental experiments, tested in the market, writers discovered the building blocks that worked.

does anybody know what Anthony Ramos is singing in the Hamilton reunion performance at the 2025 Tony’s?

Specifically during the “Non-Stop” bit at the very end right before everyone sings the “history has its eyes on you”, he’s clearly not singing with the ensemble, but his track (Laurens/Philip) doesn’t sing in that song, so what solo-ish bit is he singing?

I’ve included a video of the specific part I’m talking about.

Please help me out, it’s driving me and my friend crazy 😭

Why did horror movies keep putting Christopher Lee in similar-but-not-identical checked suits?

Pictured below, in order: Hound of the Bastervilles (two different suits - the first has two breast pockets, the second has only one), The Skull, Horror Express, and The Wicker Man:

They're all clearly different suits - different pockets for the two Hound of the Baskervilles suits, red stripe for The Skull, Horror Express has similar pockets to one of the Baskerville suits, but though it's not pictured, the cut of the Baskerville suit is different and a bit longer in the jacket, and Wicker Man has both red stripe and patches.

Four movies. Five different suits. Spanning about 14 years. Costume designers must have really liked how he looked in this print.

(also interesting to note that in all four of the roles, Lee is playing a titled man - he's a 'Sir' for three of them, and a lord in the fourth.)
