So many dire sleep issues are caused by the fact that most people are not allowed to sleep according to their actual circadian rhythms.
The 9-5 schedule is arbitrary and it excludes large swaths of our population. There's no good reason we have to keep doing things this way.

With the advent of psychoanalysis, the mirror image became primarily associated with the process of identity formation and, in particular, with fundamental psychological distinctions such as the self and the other, or the conscious and the unconscious. Among the most notable examples in psychoanalytic theory is Lacan’s mirror stage, describing the process whereby the child recognizes his/her body image in the mirror, thus developing a sense of self and ideal wholeness but also, when looking back at its flesh-and-blood self, a crisis of imperfection and fragmentation. For Freud, a mirror image forming a double always conjures up the notion of death, which is why we experience the sight of our double uncanny. Through doubling, the subject perceives him/herself as decomposed and sees his/her counterpart as a threat. “There is nothing more uncanny,” writes Heinrich Heine, “than seeing one’s face accidentally in a mirror by moonlight”.

Scheduling time to talk to my brother like we’re booking an appointment or, like, a political conference
“I am available any time between now and 10:30 AM, or, between 7PM and 10PM this evening”
The problem with both siblings being chronic overachievers: you actually have things you must do

@stopbeeinganass great name by the way but in this case also kind of ironic--
"I have to get up early" is, in fact, actual fucking evidence.
Medical studies show that when people are forced to work shifts that don't conform with their natural circadian rhythm they have much higher rates of becoming ill, getting injured or becoming disabled.
How would you like it if you were forced to wake up at the time when your body was trying to shut down and go to sleep five days a week? And if the time you had available for sleep was time at which your brain desperately wanted to be wide awake and active?
Yes. Morning people are an oppressive class.
It doesn't mean that they're all assholes, although telling someone that years of sleep deprivation is not actual fucking evidence is 100% a highly dicktastic asshole move.
Men are an oppressive class. White people are an oppressive class.
Christians are an oppressive class. Capitalists are an oppressive class. Many men, white people, Christians, and possibly even some capitalists are genuinely kind and decent people. That does not mean that their being the majority of people in power does not have oppressive effects on others.
Shift work has known physical effects that wouldn't be so much of a problem if night owls worked when they were naturally active and handled the shifts people like you can't work and shouldn't have to.

hi! I thought of something and I’m wondering if u have any idea what term could be used for it?? like. what if u feel really connected to a certain time period (80s, 90s, etc) and maybe as if you’re someone or want to be someone from that time period either in that time or in present day. could that maybe be an archetrope? do u have any thoughts?
Oooh my partner gets this feeling too!
It could be a hearthome except the 'home' is a particular decade?
If you feel you're actually from that time period rather than just particularly connected to it now I'm not sure if there's already a word for that? Could make up something if we wanted.
Chronoplace...chronotype... something cool like that. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!!

😴 Lion, Bear, Wolf, or Dolphin? Unlock Your Sleep Chronotype & Finally Understand Your Energy! ✨🧬
Ever feel like you're constantly fighting your natural energy levels? Like you're forcing yourself to be a morning person when your brain only truly sparks after sunset? Or maybe you leap out of bed ready to conquer, while others hit snooze five times? 🤔
You're not lazy or undisciplined – you might just be living out of sync with your Sleep Chronotype!
Popularized by sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, chronotypes describe your body's natural, genetically influenced tendency to sleep and wake at certain times. Understanding yours can be a game-changer for productivity, mood, and overall well-being.
So, Which Sleep Animal Are You?
(Read through and see which description feels most like YOU!)
The Lion 🦁 (Early Riser ~15-20% of people)
Vibe: Up before the sun, often without an alarm. Go-getter, leader, optimistic.
Energy Peak: Morning! Super productive before lunch.
Energy Dip: Starts fading mid-afternoon, often ready for bed early (9-10 PM).
Challenge: Social evenings can be tough; can feel out of sync with the later world.
The Bear 🐻 (Sun Follower ~50-55% of people - Most Common!)
Vibe: Energy levels follow the solar cycle. Generally sociable, good team players.
Energy Peak: Mid-morning to early afternoon. Gets things done!
Energy Dip: Mid-afternoon slump is REAL (around 2-4 PM).
Schedule: Fits best with a standard 9-5 day. Generally wakes around 7 AM, sleeps around 11 PM.
The Wolf 🐺 (Night Owl ~15-20% of people)
Vibe: Struggles HARD with mornings. Creative, impulsive, introspective. Feels most alive after dark.
Energy Peak: Late afternoon and especially evening. Often gets a "second wind" at night.
Energy Dip: Mornings are rough, often needs caffeine to get started.
Challenge: Standard work/school schedules often feel brutal. Naturally sleeps late (12 AM or later) and wakes late (if allowed!).
The Dolphin 🐬 (Light Sleeper ~10% of people)
Vibe: Often struggles to get consistent, restful sleep. Intelligent, detail-oriented, sometimes anxious. Easily disturbed by noise/light.
Energy Peak: Comes in bursts, often mid-morning to early afternoon if they've slept okay.
Energy Pattern: Can feel tired most of the day due to fragmented sleep.
Challenge: Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and sticking to a strict schedule. May often be diagnosed with insomnia.
Why Does This Even Matter?
Knowing your chronotype helps you:
✅ Work with your body's natural rhythms, not against them. ✅ Schedule demanding tasks during your peak energy windows. ✅ Understand why certain times of day feel easier or harder. ✅ Reduce guilt about not conforming to a "one-size-fits-all" schedule. ✅ Communicate your needs and optimize your environment (light exposure, timing).
So, which chronotype are YOU? 👇 Does this explain a lot about your daily energy?

*Decides to take up school at night to catch up since I'm homeschooled*
*Reaches a lesson explaining sleep*
*Gets curious and looks up which type I am between a long sleeper and short sleeper*
*Discovers I'm a part of 10% of the population and have the "Dolphin Chronotype"*
... Okay, that explains a lot.

Thinking about sleep deprivation again. Thinking about how sleep deprivation exacerbates and outright cause memory dysfunction.
Thinking about how certain neurotypes are statistically more likely to have non standard circadian rhythms. Thinking about how our society doesn't easily allow folks with atypical circadian rhythms to get enough sleep.
Wondering how much "memory loss" would be associated with certain neurotypes if everyone was allowed to get consistent sleep according to their own internal clocks.
Wondering how many of our "typical" symptoms are actually extreme symptoms, exacerbated by a wildly unaccommodating society.
Wondering what every neurotype would look like, if we lived in a world that met our needs.

Speaking as both a disabled person and an extreme night owl, I've never understood why managers/bosses don't just schedule people with a non-normative chronotype at the times they would work best - why the insistence on having all workers be in the building at the same time when up to half of those workers would be much more productive (and happier, not that that matters under capitalism!) either starting earlier or finishing later?!
Scheduling owls on later shifts (e.g. full-time shifts from 2pm-10pm, adjust as needed for part-time work) and larks on early shifts (e.g. 4am-12pm) would allow us to work at times when we're at our best whilst allowing essential services (such as shops, childcare facilities, GP surgeries, etc) to be open longer for the people that need them!
ok not to be that guy but like. labor rights and working class rights can coexist with 24h services and late amenities. its certainly hard to do so without worker exploitation in this political and social environment, it’s not a conflict likely to resolve overnight. but 24h services are important and especially valuable to those of us that are disabled or are on a different circadian rhythm. in fact more professional, health, and government services should be available or at least possible to work on asynchronously (if applicable) during late or odd hours, while workers also get sufficient pay for their labor and proper consistent scheduling. this would be much easier on the workers with night schedules if the entire professional world didn’t grind to a halt at 5pmEST

I am a #night owl, embracing #nocturnal #creativity and #productivity despite societal pressures favoring early risers. They argue for acceptance of diverse chronotypes and flexible schedules. I say it is natural and #science agrees.
