When electronics manufacturing took off in China in the 1980s, rural women who had just begun moving to the cities made up the majority of the factory workforce. They didn’t have many other options. Managers at companies like Foxconn preferred to hire women because they believed them to be more obedient [...]
Hiring a young, female workforce in India comes with its own requirements — which include reassuring doting parents about the safety of their daughters. The company offers workers free food, lodging, and buses to ensure a safe commute at all hours of the day. On days off, women who live in Foxconn hostels have a 6 p.m. curfew; permission is required to spend the night elsewhere. “[If] they go out and not return by a specific time, their parents would be informed,” a former Foxconn HR manager told Rest of World. “[That’s how] they offer trust to their parents.”
[...] the Tamil Nadu government sent a strong signal welcoming Foxconn and other manufacturers: Authorities approved new regulations that would increase workdays from eight to 12 hours. This meant that Foxconn and other electronics factories would be able to reduce the number of shifts needed to keep their production line running from three to two, just like in China. [...] Political parties aligned with the government called the bill “anti-labor” and, during the vote, walked out of the legislative assembly. After the bill passed, trade unions in the state announced a series of actions including a demonstration on motorbikes, civil disobedience campaigns, and protests in front of the ruling party’s local headquarters. The government shelved its new rule within four days.
Indian Foxconn workers told Rest of World that eight hours under intense pressure is already hard to bear. “I’ll die if it’s 12 hours of work,” said Padmini, the assembly line worker.
For the expatriate workers, the slower pace of the factory floors in India is its own shock to the system. A Taiwanese manager at a different iPhone supplier in the Chennai area told Rest of World that India’s 8-hour shifts and industry-standard tea breaks were a drag on production. “You have barely settled in on your seat, and the next break comes,” the manager lamented.
In China, Foxconn relies on lax enforcement of the country’s labor law — which limits workdays to eight hours and caps overtime — as well as lucrative bonuses to get employees to work 11 hours a day during production peaks [...] five Chinese and Taiwanese workers said they were surprised to discover that their Indian colleagues refused to work overtime. Some attributed it to a weak sense of responsibility; others to what they perceived as Indian people’s low material desire. “They are easily content,” an engineer deployed from Zhengzhou said. “They can’t handle even a bit more pressure. But if we don’t give them pressure, then we won’t be able to get everything right and move production here in a short time.” [...] At the same time, the expat staff enjoy the Indian work culture of tea breaks, chatting with colleagues, and going home on time. They recognize they are helping the company spread a Chinese work culture that they know can be unhealthy. [...]
On the assembly line, Foxconn’s targets were tough to reach, workers said. Jaishree, 21, joined the iPhone shop floor in 2022 as a recent graduate with a degree in mathematics. (With India’s high level of unemployment, Foxconn’s assembly line has plenty of women with advanced degrees, including MBAs.) [...] “At the start, during my eight-hour shift, I did about 300 [screws]. Now, I do 750,” she said. “We have to finish within time, otherwise they will scold us.” [...]
Mealtimes are an issue, too. In December 2021, thousands of Indian Foxconn employees protested after some 250 colleagues contracted food poisoning. In response, the company changed food contractors, and increased its monthly base salary from 14,000 rupees to 18,000 rupees ($168 to $216) — double the minimum wage prescribed by the Tamil Nadu labor department for unskilled workers. [...]
Working conditions take a physical toll. Padmini has experienced hair loss because she has to wear a skull cap and work in air-conditioned spaces, she said. “Neck pain is the worst, since we are constantly bending down and working.” She has irregular periods, which she attributes to the air conditioning and the late shifts. “[Among] girls with me on the production line, some six girls have this problem,” Padmini said. Workers said they regularly see colleagues become unwell. “The day before yesterday, a girl fainted and they took her to the hospital,” [...] Padmini, at 26, believes she is close to the age where the company might consider her too old. “They used to hire women up to age 30, now they hire only up to 28,” she said.

Seven Lives (Steven Grant x reader)
Masterlist | Spotify Playlist
Tumblr media
A/N: I watched Chennai Express again somewhere last week and decided to write this drabble, added my favourite place on the planet + my favourite person on the planet. I also cried writing this so-
Word Count: 783 words
☾ .・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.
You stared glumly up at the set of stairs in front of you, angrily nibbling at the lime ice cream in your hand. The limestone caves above you looked magnificent and you were so tempted to go up and explore the intricately carved temple, it had, after all, been years since you did. You glance up at the big statue beside the stairs and frown.
“I’d go up but this little fella won’t let me,” you mumbled to the golden-faced God, rubbing at your swollen tummy.
Your grandma had forbidden you from going up due to your pregnant state. She had been wary since you expressed interest in taking your husband there, saying that he would appreciate the beautiful architecture and history.
“What are we looking at, darling?” your husband whispered and you turned to frown at him.
“Aw love, what's wrong?” He said taking your face in his hands.
“I wanna go up.” You said, nodding towards the stairs.
“Your ammamah is not gonna be happy, my sweet wife.” He frowned back, eyeing the stairs with you.
“Hey! You’re the one who did this to-” you say a little too loudly and Steven clamps a hand onto your mouth.
“Holy place!” he hissed through a smile.
The both of you stood there a little longer, watching people walk up and down the colourful concrete staircase. You loved this place, it gave you peace and tranquillity like no other and you felt amazing. But it truly did make you sad that you couldn't waddle your way up the stairs.
“Alright, you know what…” Steven Grant folded the sleeves of his kurta and suddenly scooped you up into his arms bridal style as if you weighed like a feather.
“NOOO STEVEN PUT ME DOWN!” you squeal, grabbing onto the edge of your saree.
“Come on love, what kinda superhero doesn’t do superhero things for his wife?”  Steven winks down at you and kicks his shoes off.
You hide your face behind the long edge of your saree as people begin to stare and point the second Steven started walking up the stairs with you. The arm that is hooked around Steven’s neck was already a cry for help, but part of you really did want to go up to the cave.
“Steven, there are people watching.” you mumble and hang onto him tightly.
“Let them watch, keep your eyes on me, love.” He whispered back, watching his footing.
“Two hundred and seventy two steps, Steven.”
“I’ve done more.”
“Yea, without your pregnant wife in your arms!”
People around you started to coo and shout praises, all which Steven nodded politely to. You watch your husband’s face for any sign of a strain, his jaw set in concentration and the feeling of being rocked in his arms easing out all of your anxieties. Steven’s hands on you grounded you to him, and you held to that feeling like it was your life line.
“Did you know that the cave is 400 million years old?” Steven says, as he continues to take step after step.
Steven continued to dish out facts and you listened intensely, nodding at each of them despite already learning all of the facts by heart. You watch him say hi to a monkey and your eyes shift to the vel-shaped entrance of the cave. Your heart swells with pride as people around you cheer and clap as Steven slowly sets you down slowly before kneeling down and adjusting your saree’s pleats.
You were in your favourite place on Earth and all you could do was look at your husband. You can’t help feeling lucky and loved. You teared up as elderly folk swarmed Steven, touching his head and giving him their blessings. Once the crowd cleared, Steven reached out to grab your hand, pulling you close. He set a hand onto your tummy and knelt down again, pressing his ear against you.
Was it really possible to fall in love with the same person again and again?
“Your mummy is very spoiled, little one, I’d do anything for you and for her.” You smacked Steven’s head and he laughed, getting up and encasing you in an embrace.
“Thanks, Steven, I love you.” you mumble in his chest while he fixes your hair.
The seven-lives bond that people always talked about when it came to marriage didn’t seem true to you then. You’d hate to see someone else with Steven in his eighth life. But you’d have seven lifetimes to ponder over that. Now, you held onto Steven’s hand tightly as he led you to the cave temple, Steven chastising you to watch your step as he stirred you around puddles.
Translations:
ammamah: grandma
kurta: a loose collarless shirt or tunic worn in many regions of South Asia
Vel: is a divine javelin or spear associated with Murugan, the Hindu god of war.
Saree: a women's garment from the Indian subcontinent, that consists of an un-stitched stretch of woven fabric arranged over the body as a robe, with one end tied to the waist, while the other end rests over one shoulder as a stole (shawl), sometimes baring a part of the midriff

Ok guys Bollywood films and what fear avatar they'd be:
Om Shanti Om - the desolation cause of all the fire or the stranger cause of the reincarnation stuff
Ra-One - gotta be the stranger right? Cause he's actually a computer programme not the dad
Chennai Express - the end cause she's like running away from her "destiny" and keeps coming back to it?
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - somehow also the stranger cause like Anjali has changed since like high school OOH wait no the web cause the mum orchestrated the whole thing lol
3 Idiots - Rancho also feels very stranger core but the whole idea of the Indian education system being fucked is giving corruption
Ek Tha Tiger - the hunt oh my god
Taare Zameen Par - the lonely I think
PK - the eye cause he's driven by the need to find out information right
Bhoothnath - oh my god I guess it would be the end cause he's a ghost
Please feel free to fight me in the tags and also add any that I've missed!!

ateez watching indian movies with you
Tumblr media
author's note: i'm a brown atiny who majored in film aka bollywood/indian movies are a huge part of my identity— i was watching kal ho naa ho the other night nd was thinking abt whether or not atz would watch indian movies w me and what their reactions would be. also, i def missed a huge chunk of movies so pls excuse me ehe
taglist: @k-hotchoisan @eyeryis @sinnarols @aaasia111 @sunshineangel-reads apply for the permanent taglist here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hongjoong: this poor baby he's so dedicated to his work but would do his best to make time for the two of you to watch a three hour long indian movie with you, only to fall asleep part way through. he'd last the first 10-15 minutes then pass out, and if you're watching a south indian film, he'll immediately wake tf up when a gun goes off or during the first fight scene. he'd really want to watch rrr with you but fully fall asleep, only to be scared awake during the scene with ntr jr (bheem) wrestling the tiger and be scared shitless from there. however, if you're watching a romcom? gl bc the man is definitely fully asleep and will wake up at the end and say, "that was good i enjoyed it!" you want to be mad at him, but he looks so well rested that you're glad he enjoyed the movie in some way, shape, or crazy form. but fr he'd love the movies that are super detailed and conceptual like if he watched pushpa: the rise, he's definitely highly anticipating pushpa: the rule. he's a 2 part film kinda guy imo he loves the long development and the intensive research and the dedication a director puts into his work. i think he's a rajamouli guy for sure. maybe even like sholay, lagaan, english vinglish— you get the idea.
Tumblr media
seonghwa: seonghwa's a super emotional audience member— everything affects him so deeply, especially scenes with heartbreak or little kids. like, the scene in kuch kuch hota hai where kajol (anjali) finds out that srk (rahul) is in love with rani mukherji (tina) and she's just sobbing and then the song plays? hwa is fully sobbing. he's like clinging to you and drying his eyes and you're patting his back while whispering "it's just a movie it's okay" but it's not okay because unrequited love HURTS. he's definitely more of a bollywood romcom person and probably will want to binge all of srk's movies with you one night, and during the most romantic songs, he'll stand up and copy the iconic srk stance (you know the one with his arms stretched out and then the female lead runs into his arms) and he'll 100% expect you to run into his arms. he's a karan johar bitch fr... either karan johar or yrf. i feel like he wouldn't really vibe with south indian films and end up preferring the sappy, bollywood romcom. but, he's totally an indian serial slut and would binge everything like there's no tomorrow (yeh rishta, iss pyaar ko kya naam doon?, bade achhe lagte hain, and so on) but in terms of movies, he'd love kabhi alvida naa kehna, kabhi kushi khabi gham, kal ho naa ho, dostana, kuch kuch hota hai, chalte chalte (just call him an srk stan and move on).
Tumblr media
yunho: one word: golmaal. he would love the shit outta rohit shetty i'm telling you. like, yes, he appreciates the fine cinema that comes from india, but rohit shetty's got him rolling on the floor in fits. yunho gives such bakwas indian movie vibes but we're here for it— like, the dumbassary in golmaal 2 is everything to him, and chennai express would send him into fits (especially the drunk srk scene). he'd also 100% get up on his feet and start dancing to the upbeat songs in the films more than anything, though, he would fully make fun of the super dramatic scenes with the bawling and sobbing— and i'm not talking about truly tragic scenes but like when the sadness is overdramatic and it suddenly starts raining while the main character is crying (specifically the song tujhe yaad na meri aayee from kuch kuch hota hai) so it's safer to stick to the dumb funny movies... maybe give good newwz a whirl
Tumblr media
yeosang: yeosangie is happy to do anything and everything with you even if he knows the movie will confuse the shit outta him. you'd probably start the guy off on the sequel to a movie (my brain immediately went don 2 or dhoom 2) and he'll be so mad confused the whole time, so he'll keep asking you questions during the movie because he wants to be just as invested in it as you are. more than anything, though, he's more invested in you explaining the movie because of how passionately you talk about the plot and the characters and the dialogue— you might as well forego the movie and just describe the movie to him while spooning in bed. that being said, he'd probably also rewatch the movie a couple of times to fully wrap his head around the film now that he's acquired your commentary and can pair it with the visuals in the film. either that or the poor thing would fall asleep... but he'd fall asleep on your shoulder and just sink into your embrace so fuck the movie just cuddle and take a nap while armaan malik sings in the background
Tumblr media
san: san is such a wild card imo but let's be real i feel like he'd be such a horndog while watching movies so it doesn't even matter what movie you put on he'll only be half present, especially if the don series or race series or lust stories is playing oh dear god don't show this man cocktail if you want to actually watch a movie with you... or pathaan dear lord help BUT i feel like he'd be more interested in the family related movies— like where family is everything so k3g, ala vaikunthapurramuloo, bomarillu, chillar party, main hoon na, tararumpum, etc. also maybe even the ones about friendship, so zindagi naa milegi dobara, 3 idiots, dil chahta hai, jaane tu ya jaane na, rang de basanti, kai po che— again, the wildest of cards. he'd be down to see anything honestly. anything for his love wink wonk
Tumblr media
mingi: god this boy i feel like he would ask all the questions in the world like every other dialogue it's just another question (but they're all related to the movie so it's... okay?) but he just won't have the patience to wait for the next scene to answer his question. no, he wants to know from you so movies like 83, chak de india, dil bole hadippa, paan singh tomar, jersey (BUT THE TELUGU ONE JFC NOT THE HINDI ONE I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH), dangal, basically any sports movie would be best for him because most of his questions would be about the sport so there's no chance of you spoiling the movie for him but i feel like he'd also be a huge priyanka chopra fan but some of her filmography is........ traumatizing? confusing? i'm thinking fashion specifically for trauma while what's your raashee? is just so unbelievably confusing. he'd also like deepika padukone, alia bhaat, samantha, rashmika— as long as she's pretty and a talented actress, mingi's gonna vibe
Tumblr media
wooyoung: indian movies are his jam imo he'd get up on his feet every single song and dance his heart out even if the song is super duper sad (man's is fully dancing to naatu naatu but then also sadly jamming to komuram bheemudo two seconds later the duality is insane). his favorite actors are definitely allu arjun, vijay, hrithik roshan, varun dhawan, tamannaah— and he would rewatch the shit outta abcd and dhoom 2 because the dance numbers are truly impeccable. movies like abcd, rab ne bana di jodi, chance pe dance are right up his alley but i also feel like he'd have fun watching bunty aur babli, jhoom barabar jhoom, race gurram, etc. he's a happy-go-lucky kinda movie guy, imo
Tumblr media
jongho: jongho's the type to be super judgmental but like in the best way possible. he sits and watches the movie quietly with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyebrows furrowed. super quiet and super serious. you sneak glances at him every so often but you seriously can't tell what's going on in his head until he debriefs you after the movie is done, which could go one of two ways: he spares your feelings and tells you he likes the movie (if you tell him that this movie is your most favorite movie in the world) or be completely straightforward with you and dive into an in-depth film analysis. i feel like he'd prefer the movies with gorgeous soundtracks though and want to learn to sing some of the songs (we hate kabir singh in this house but bekhayali would shake his world, and fanaa oh lord he would love that ost with all of his heart... maybe even the main hoon na ost) but lordy any ost with sid sriram is his JAM

My thoughts on the current ipl points table that absolutely no one asked for :
(part-1)
Tumblr media
1. They're the og champions...very chill, very fun vibes.
soo happy to see them on top. They really be feeling like royalty rn lol.
Also in the end, I'm just a girl 🎀💖 some I absolutely adore their jersey.
2. Yaar.... I know Hyderabad is a great team and everything but.... Do you guys have to go this hard?
Other teams come to play a match, this team comes to crack open your morale and bring you to your knees.
Baki teams khel rahi hai, Yeh log toh seedha gunda gardi kar rahe hai Yaar.
Watching Abhishek, our Indian player, a youngster, bat like that feels amazing tho.
3. Kolkata.... Man.
Gautam bhai aaye, and suddenly Sabka Chris Gayle bahar aagya.
I feel like sunil will take both purple and orange caps this year and gambhir bhai has already planned on picking the trophy this year so... Yea.
PS : once gautam bhai is done someone pls convince him to come as ICT's coach.
4. Chennai = 7 letters = thala for a reason.
They're doing great, but their recent performances makes me worried about what will happen to this team when Mahi Bhai retires.
If they don't start taking more responsibility now there's a good chance csk will crash land in the bottom next year. Hope thT doesn't happen tho.
5. LSG, you beauty....
They look like they are a weak team but they've defeated rcb, gt, pbks and...sabse importantly.... CSK.
But their next matches are quite tough too... So we'll see where they end up after 2 - 3 more matches.
The way kl Rahul hits sixes is just beautiful.
6. Mumbai.
I...... Have no idea what mysterious substance this management was on tbh.
If you want to remove someone from the captaincy, there's gotta be a better way to do that so the fans aren't offended and the player also isn't disrespected. Look how kohli left rcb's captaincy for example.
Then, if you wanted to look towards the future, Bumrah and Surya, both who have captained team India and have stayed with the franchise despite having so many opportunities to earn more if they leave should have been considered.
Or they could have just choosen Ishan. Just like csk and gt choose youngsters, Ishan could have been a good option too. Plus He's captained his team during u-19 in 2016.
But no. They choose Hardik.
Tbh, I feel so sorry for him cause in his mind, when MI offered him captaincy and called him back, he would have been happy to go back to his old team...like going back home.
But the sad truth is, MI management saw how successful he was in gt, winning in the first year and then reaching the finals in 2nd year....and it pissed them off that their player is doing well in some other team. So they brought him back.
Despite so much backlash from fans, so much hatred and trolling against Hardik, this shitty management never held one press conference to clear up misunderstandings and give answers to their fans honestly. Because they knew, if the truth comes out, they'll be on the receiving end of this hate.
Fuck them.
The only mistake Hardik did was leaving gt. But... Oh well.
(I ended up ranting lol.)

tw cancer, tw death, tw grief / life update
I was having a nice day on Saturday. I woke up, made a tea latte, did some yoga, went for a run, went to get groceries.
Around 3 PM I got a call from my mom and aunt, letting me know that the hospice nurse said that they expected my dad to have 24 hours or less to live. This was a huge change from previous estimates of a week-two weeks. Derek and I booked airline tickets same-day from Minneapolis to CA. Our flight wasn't until 9:30 PM.
We were at the airport, past security, waiting for our flight to board, when I got the call from my mom saying that my dad had passed.
I had prepared for this since he was diagnosed 10 months ago - I had prepared for this since he started hospice - I had prepared for this since the last time I saw him in April - but I still wasn't ready. I thought I was ready, I thought I would be ready, but I wasn't.
Derek held me when I broke down weeping in the middle of the airport. We flew 3.5 hours to CA, were on the road for another 1 hour, and got to my parents' house at past 1 AM. It was hell. It was a hell day.
The hell got worse the next day when we saw his body at the funeral home. I walked to him and automatically said "Daddy? Daddy?" like I always used to, and he didn't respond. He didn't say anything. It was hell. The worst thing I've ever been through.
My aunt and Derek had to go back to home (Pennsylvania and Minneapolis respectively) yesterday. My mom and I attended my dad's funeral today. Seeing the hearse, driving behind the hearse, was really hard. My dad taught me how to drive, and I used to sit in the backseat when he and my mom drove me around when I was a kid, and now I was driving behind the funeral hearse.
My mom and I were so nervous about the funeral, but it was beautiful. It was at a veterans cemetery, peaceful and quiet and beautifully maintained. The ceremony was beautiful. It gave us peace and closure.
My dad was 70 years old. He grew up in Chennai, India, in abject poverty, the youngest of seven kids, raised by a single mom. He grew up to become a pharmacist, and moved from a couple of decades of retail pharmacy work in India and Dubai and the United States, to moving to outpatient and inpatient clinic pharmacy management after he enlisted in the Air Force. He loved pharmacy so, so much. He was so passionate about it. His last job before he retired was an oncology pharmacist, at the same chemotherapy infusion clinic where he ended up receiving his chemotherapy after a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer.
My dad grew up in poverty, and his own dad was never around. He worked hard and provided for my mom and I.
I have had a lot of pain and grief ever since my dad was diagnosed with cancer. I could write for pages about it. All I can say is that I hope nobody has to see a loved one suffer and lose their life due to cancer, because it's hell to witness. I have the greatest empathy and love for others who have witnessed this painful process in their family.
All I can say is my only consolation is that my dad lived a long life. I know there are so many people who tragically die younger. My only other consolation is knowing that we are all united in grief, because this pain of losing a loved one comes to all of us someday.
This past few days, this past month, this past 10 months, has changed me irrevocably. I have new fears, new anxieties, new understanding (and fear) of death and mortality.
I also have more understanding and appreciation of life, how temporary it is, how important it is to live life to the fullest while we can, and how important it is to appreciate the people we love. My husband, my friends, and my aunt and cousins have been so supportive, carrying me through something so devastating. Even work, even my boss, who has been so understanding.
And to everyone on tumblr who has been so supportive during this journey. People who read my posts, who liked them to show solidarity with my feelings, who commented, who sent me messages of support and kindness. Thank you.

Chapter 2: Picturesque (Sambandham: War of Hearts)
i am late, but here is chapter 2!
******
Chennai, India
The fire of the Sun had settled into the white of the clouds, spreading through it, burning with a fiery passion, yet much like a nurturing flame, filling the white, the sight enthralling, though some melancholy was attached to it. Arun mused on what it could be, as he painted the view in front of him, having been suddenly inspired after a heavy work day. He had gone through a lot, and had realized, if he kept himself occupied only in his work, he never got any relaxation. Despite his once upon a time thought that work only relaxed him, he had come to realize how burnt out he had become after some months of working almost every waking moment.
His grandmother had suggested he try his hand at any art at that stage, and he had chosen painting, which became his go-to relaxation, though he did often sing as well. Music was a passion of his, one his elder brother often told him that he should pursue, at least on and off, and he kept wondering if he should try to officially make covers of songs he loved. He sang them often enough for his family anyway.
As he finished painting the orange sky, his thoughts travelled to the doe-eyed, gentle woman who he had rejected, harsher than he had ever rejected anyone. Much harsher. Which had caused Kshithija to break away from the entire family, aware that none would really find fault with him, or even tell him he was wrong. He had seen his sister as well as Lokeshvari in tears when they discussed old memories, and the old guilt resurfaced.
He had destroyed the relationships, had he not? The fault was all his. If allowed, he would try to bring Kshithija back into the fold of the family, so that everyone got time with her.
Though, given Aditya's wish to date Nila, Kshithija's cousin, he had no doubt that she would return. However, what made him think she would be close with the family? He knew, better than most maybe, that Kshithija had this way of being friendly without giving much of herself away. And he dreaded the day that would happen with his whole family. It had already happened with him, at least partially.
Taking a deep breath, he searched for his phone, finding it and turning on a random playlist, freezing when the song started playing.
Thelimanam mazhavillin niramaniyum neram Niramarnnoru kanavennil theliyunna pole Puzhayoram thazhukunnee thanu neeran kaattu Pulakangal izhaneythoru kuzhaloothiya pole
He he had to smile at the irony the Universe was throwing at him. Kshithija was a prolific painter, her artwork still hung all over the house, memories of him watching her paint coming to the forefront of his mind and eyes.
For someone who did not like her romantically, he sure had way too many memories of her, and moments with her. It was a given at first that they would interact, given how close his elder sister Iramathi was to Kshithija, but he had not quite expected to get along with her as much as they had. Which made him feel even guiltier for having rejected her so harshly.
What had magnified that guilt was the still gentle and sweet behaviour from Kshithija, though more formal than ever. When she had left, he had felt almost suffocated and relieved all at once, which only confused him further. Who feels such a weird paradox of emotions about a single person?
He, that is who.
Arun sighed, knowing he had gotten deep into his head again. But he could not help it. Recently, he had been thinking a lot, reflecting, and he was displeased, with himself and even many in his family. Definitely not with his mother, because she had pulled him up, and set him on the right path. But he wondered, why had his elder siblings not stopped him? His younger ones had been angry, though not for long. But Ira was supposed to be Kshithija's best friend. And how did Aditya expect Nila to say yes for a date when he had not bothered too much about Nila's cousin sister?
Had his screwup messed up everything for his whole family?
But his mother had told him that every issue cannot be his fault either. He should not take the responsibility for the fault of others. His faults were his, and others were theirs. Even if he was in the wrong, the mistake another chooses to make is theirs. Plus, he also had made enough mistakes that he burned to rectify.
So much so that he had pushed himself to text Nila and ask after Kshithija. He had to, for his heart hurt at the memory of her devastated eyes, dark and at one time shimmering with flecks of gold. He had taken away that brightness, which made him feel worse than he already did. Gulping heavily, as if swallowing huge breaths of air, he continued painting, allowing his heart, veins and feelings to take over.
A short time later, he stared at what he had painted, shocked at the woman who had graced his canvas. This was the first time he had painted a human figure, and somehow, he had painted her. Somehow, his self seemed very familiar with a woman he did not like romantically.
What was going on?
"Anna! Anna!"
Paavai's nightingale voice brought him out of his head, propelling him to hide his painting. He had no desire to show it to anyone without understanding why he had made the painting.
"Yes little one?" he called out teasingly, making her pout at him for a moment, a common expression when the inside joke was brought up.
"Nila Akka just called. Thija Akka is returning to Chennai permanently!"
*****
Translation of song (Malare from Premam):
Thelimanam mazhavillin niramaniyum neram When the sky is decorated with colors of rainbow. Niramarnnoru kanavennil theliyunna pole A colourful dream is blossoming in me Puzhayoram thazhukunnee thanu neeran kaattum Wind blowing through this river side; Pulakangal izhaneythoru kuzhaloothiya pole Is like the tunes from a flute weaved with thrill.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
So first of he would absolutely be head over heelssss. Like yk that scene from om Shanti om with SRK and Deepika.
Just like that when you come out of the room all dressed up he will for sure whilst in front of you.
I am a firm beliver he would have hands all over youuu. Like the moment you are standing next to him he is going to have his of your waist or your back.
If you like jewellery like me soo if you ask him yo help you wear your necklace he will FOR SURE butterfly kiss your shoulder blade.
He will surely flirt and give suggestive comments not regarding who is in front of him.
And like the menace to society he is he will tease you at every single second. He won't let you go any where without him. He will most likely be around you and glaring at everyone.
In the party if their is couple dance he will most give the princess treatment and kiss your hand like he will kiss your wedding ring.
"Can i have this dance my princess?" Kissing you hand as he will pull you into his chest while his huge calloused hand wrapped around your wait slightly massaging them.
If you will be fighting the special grade curse like yk how in like history movies like tucking you Pala in like your waist if you get what I mean and like using your cursed energy then.
This man will fall even more after looking so perfect and still fighting holy you can't think.
So I also have a feeling that in some point of time he will pick you up bridal style like in Chennai express.
I think he will also go for some famous bollywood style flirting for sure.
Okay so this is out of context butt I really wanted to add this imagine it starts raining and you both are outside and he tries to pull you in shade coz he is like "you'll get sick" cause yk if your prone to cold like i am them yk the pain. But you pull him instead in the rain. You both dance your heart out your black saree stuck to ur body and his t-shirt also stuck to his and like you can see his entire body layout. Like slow dance or if you like the energetic kind then imagine like the the dance in 3 idiots the one in song Zoobi Doobi.
Okay here is the steamy part:
When you like come back home and as soon as the door will close he will grab your and and kiss you. Their will be very like steamy make out session.
I personally think that he will like not let you do anything and like he will be just Kissing and leaving marks on every inch of your body whole like taking of like the jewellery and like the safety pins from your saree.
Like think when he'll open the dori and teasing your neck sgjejddjfk.

has anyone thought about the diegesis of music in bollywood/south asian masala movies? there's no doubt that it functions differently than in western musicals... but HOW exactly? in most western musical theatre the music seems to non-diegetic (as in, the characters and those around them are unaware that they are singing) unless it is a performance, then it is diegetic/source music (they are singing in the story- everyone knows they're singing).
perhaps the difference comes from the fact that masala movies are movies first and (to my knowledge) are often not adapted from musical stage productions (though the movies CAN be adapted into musicals in the case of mughal-e-azam, hum aapke hain koun, and dilwale dulhania le jayenge). but in masala movies the line between "this is a performance in the story" and "i am singing to express my feelings" seems somewhat blurred. Señorita from ZNMD is a performance, they are singing, everyone knows it. Bum Bum Bole from Taare Zameen Par, they're singing, Aamir Khan is a funny little dude singing a funky clown song. But then what about Kashmiri Main Tu Kanyakumari from Chennai Express? Singing in a car... okay, that's a performance! But the choreographed dance number? Is that happening or is it symbolizing their journey across India? Mere Khwabon Mein from DDLJ is definitely (probably?) Simran expressing her dreams and such, and she's not singing in universe. But then what about Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna? Raj singing at Simran would make sense as a performance at a mehndi, but what about Simran singing back?
OH and since the popularity of film/musical songs works differently in South Asia than it does in the States... how does continuity work in that? Such as the medley from Mujhse Dosti Karoge, in which Hrithik's character sings Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Rani's character... does this mean that KKHH exists in this universe?? Does Rani Mukherjee the actress then exist in this universe and her character in this movie have a doppleganger?? What about all of Shahrukh Khan's movies... especially with the antakshari scenes in Chennai Express? Does Om Shanti Om exist in that universe? Does SRK the actor exist? If not then how did these songs come about? Is it similar to the NSU (Nickelodeon Sitcom Universe) in which there are gray parts of one's mind when it comes to crossover events? This FASCINATES me to no end you don't understand.
side note. i want to see someone that has directed a masala movie tackle one of these american musical to movie adaptations. no more tom hooper. i want farah khan or karan johar or ss rajamouli to direct cats and see how THAT looks. if tom hooper had directed k3g it would not have been as fantastical (such as the "my son is here" super sense) as it was.
let american movie musicals have as much fun as south asian masala films do.
there seem to be some (paywalled) academic papers on the matter but it'd be interesting to hear anyone's thoughts on it!

DAY 5496
Jalsa, Mumbai                Mar 4/5,  2023               Sat/Sun 8:53 AM
🪔 .. March 05 .. birthday wishes to Ef Satish Kumar Paig from Kochi ..
And the greetings of togetherness to Ef Suresh Jumani and his better half Tanya from Chennai for their 24th wedding anniversary .. 💍💕
..
the wishes do come and go from the family now known often as the Ef ..
And it needs to be told .. not be held ..
In Hyderabad at the shoot for Project K, during an action shot, I have got injured .. rib cartilage popped broke and muscle tear to the right rib cage .. canceled shoot .. did Doctor consult and scan by CT at the AIG Hospital in Hyderabad and flown back home .. strapping has been done and rest been advocated .. yes painful .. on movement and breathing .. will take some weeks they say before some normalisation will occur .. some medication is on also for pain ..
So all work that was to be done has been suspended and canceled dropped postponed for the moment until healing occurs ..
I rest at Jalsa and am mobile a bit for all the essential activities .. but yes in rest and generally lying around ..
It shall be difficult or let me say .. I shall be unable to meet, the well wishers at Jalsa Gate this evening .. so do not come .. and do inform as much as you can to those that intend coming ..
All else is well ..
Getting time to spend time with Babuji and his genius, his mind his words and his immense creativity .. the essence of life resides in his writings .. and such a learning and amazed joy to be in his company ..
There is desire to share .. to share what ever little that I may interpret from his words and his memories of the times spent with him .. to lament the limited .. to be in awe of the vision and the intellect of such a being .. and wonder how ever did one think of all that was written spoken thought by him ..
HOW ..
... and a book of a collection of some of the letters he corresponded with certain individuals finds me leafing through them to meet the mind of Babuji and one such :
Tumblr media
Apne vatavaran se koi nirapeksh nahin reh sakta  . Har pankaj mein pank ka kuch na kuch ansh rehta hai  - pankaj ko keechad lapetne ki zaroorat nahin . Kuch lapet te hain ye aur baat hai . Aap kehte hain videsh mantralay ka vatavaran ya dilli ka vatavaran aapki kavita mein nahin aaya . Itna asamprikt rehna kisi ke liye sambhav nahin . Vo kisis na kisi roop mein aaya hi hoga . aisi sadhana mujhmein aa gai hai ki kamalvatt keechad ke oopar rahoon to meri aplabhdhi  bahut choti nahin hai  .
You cannot be dispassionate or indifferent to your environment. In every lotus ( Pankaj – the one that blooms in sludge and slime viz. the lotus ) a bit of the sludge always remains – it is not essential for the lotus to wrap itself in sludge . Some do it, but that is a different matter . You say that ‘the atmosphere or the environment of the Foreign Affairs Ministry or that of Delhi has not been reflected in your poetry’ . To be so untouched for anyone is not possible . It does appear in some form or the other . I have now achieved such meditative accomplishment that remaining above the sludge and mud of the lotus is no small cognitive accomplishment for me .
.. you may wonder about the Foreign Ministry .. and Delhi in reference ..
Babuji was the lecturer in the English Department of the prestigious Allahabad University .. he did his PhD in English literature from Cambridge in 1954 .. went in 1952 and within 2 years finished his PhD which normally takes 4 years .. his dissertation was ‘W B Yeats and Occultism’  ..
WB Yeats ..  the accomplished and famed Irish poet, who had a passion for the occult, particularly that which emanated from India ..
When Babuji returned after this achievement, a rare PhD, perhaps the very first Indian to have got a PhD from Cambridge in English Literature, he was not given the recognition he so deserved from the University. In fact they actually reduced his salary. This was very upsetting for Babuji and he resigned from Allahabad University, joined the AIR, the All India Radio as a Producer, until eventually he was called by Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India to the Foreign Ministry, now known as the External Affairs Ministry, then headed by Panditji , to be the OSD, Officer on Special Duty in the Hindi Department, in New Delhi .
Such learnings are indeed most rare .. and to have time now, as always, to be in the midst of all the incredible writings, is a god send .. I am blessed  .. and to be able to share some of this with all is a duty ..
I feel your presence at the Jalsa gate .. but shall be unable to show the face ..
Apologies ..
love .. ❤️

HELLO
5, 10, 13, 15, 18, 19, 21, 29 from here
(i just realised that that's a lot so feel free to skip some/answer selectively if you want to do that!)
CAL HIIIII!!!!
(are you kidding ofcourse I'm gonna answer all of that, let's make a game out of it and see how long it takes me)(it's 15:05 when I started answering)
5. Favourite song in your native language
Can't think of one rn😭 The first one that came to mind is Venmadhi Venmadhi from Minnale because some guy was playing that on the bus yesterday. I think it's a lovely song, especially the third verse :)
10. Most enjoyable swear word in your native language
I don't really swear in Tamil😂 I only use words like stupid/wastrel/dog/buffalo... y'know the most common ones lol
But, again, the first swear word that came to mind is *looks around to make sure no one's listening* "watha" - which is basically the Tamil equivalent of fuck - because one of my friends called another friend that this morning lmao
13. Does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions ot traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
Well there's so many but i generally think that doing rituals/ chanting slokas or vedas must be very strange to outsiders who aren't really used to that! Imagine being a white christian and you encounter a yagna happening with a giant fire, lots of huge shirtless men saying very weird words in their blaring voice, adding all kinds of different things into the fire, while surrounding people watched on... I'd be terrified 😂💀
15. A saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get?
SO BEAUTIFUL. SO ELEGANT. JUST LOOKING LIKE A WOW.
18. Do you speak with a dialect of your native language?
Gosh I speak so many dialects - depending on who I'm talking with. There's what I consider the normal one, there's the one mixed with random English sentences😂, there's the local chennai dialect for when I'm dealing with/in public or local vendors💀, there's the tambrahm (wow it feels weird to say it like that) dialect because that's what I was raised on in mum's side of the family
19. Do you like your country's flag and/or emblem? What about the national anthem?
I've honestly never thought about this before...
Flag - 🇮🇳 It's a good one, I like what it stands for. But no one would forget the struggle it would take when you were 6 years old and were asked to draw the national flag and you wouldn't remember how many spokes are there in the ashoka chakra😭 or even if you remembered, you wouldn't know how to divide them evenly throughout the circle... So much stress. 7/10
Emblem - it's a bit complex if you ask me but eh. It looks cool i guess. I like the phrase 'satyameva jayathe' ("truth alone triumphs" in Sanskrit) so there's that :p 5/10
National Anthem - I love it!! I like the picture it paints, listing out all those places! Only criticism is that it was very difficult for younger abi to sing the beginning because it was so very low and i struggled for a long time😅 9/10
21. If you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be?
Aloo mutter gravy and methi roti👍
29. Does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
I was thinking really hard...before i realised🤭
MYSURU. WHY do you do that to your sambar??? It's nice, I'd be lying if I said it's bad, but how?????? How did you come to the decision "oh you know what. I'm gonna make this taste sweet. Yeah."??
We went to Mysore one time and had some sambar and do you know what happened, cal? My cousin threw up, that's what happened.
(it was because of the long uphill travel but the sambar definitely contributed :p)
What you lack in sambar, you make up for it with Udupi rasam so. I forgive you😤
(now the time is 15:55)
