Ghosts in the Narrative
what's stopping authors from adding hidden messages and codes into their novel?
that's right. ciphers.
we're talking ergodic literature babey. house of leaves. S. pale fire.
i like to call this device ghosts in the narrative.
and the way i write these ghosts is by sneaking acrostics into dialogue between characters. it's like... literary possession.
How do I do this?
you hide a message using an acrostic- which is basically just a null cipher. if you take the first letter of every word in a specified sequence, you get a hidden message.
Here's an example from "The Vane Sisters" by Vladimir Nabokov (1951):
I could isolate, consciously, little. Everything seemed blurred, yellow-clouded, yielding nothing tangible. Her inept acrostics, maudlin evasions, theopathies - every recollection formed ripples of mysterious meaning. Everything seemed yellowly blurred, illusive, lost.
- "The Vane Sisters" Vladimir Nabokov (1951)
which, by taking the first letter of each word, reads:
Icicles by Cynthia. Meter from me Sybil.
The prose on its own reads nicely, but is innocuous to the unknowing reader. Upon noticing the hidden message, the narrative takes a twist- the ghosts of the sisters have been speaking to the narrator this whole time!
The cipher can be worked on many levels- the first letter of each page, paragraph, sentence, word. the complexity is up to you, whether you start at the word, sentence, or line level.
for my works, i usually like to string out my acrostics at the paragraph level. For example, within each line of dialogue between characters, separated by breaks. as a rule of thumb, the less fine it is, the easier to work your hidden message in.
Give it a try!
Just imagine:
first you lay out your core plot, the de facto happenings of your story that can't be denied- concrete stuff.
out of nowhere, or maybe even gradually as a tease, your mc starts making remarks or comments that could have double meanings. like they might be talking to someone else. listening, speaking, to a ghost- A GHOST- this whole damn time.
of course, placing some clues for an acute reader might clue them in and give them extreme catharsis during the reveal, if that's what you want- or you can punch them in the face with it.
with a bit of literary grit and wordsmithing, you can add a nice layer to your narrative. might even be something you employ to change the reality of your story entirely- all in the hands of the sneaky author devil.
ergodic literature babey.
Favorite tool in my writer toolbox: Ghosts in the Narrative
make your writing ergodic with ciphers!
just like i did with this post.

Several Short Games, Part 2
Last time I got through about half of the games that Lily gave me. Here's the rest of them, including the one that's much longer than the others.
queerweird (Jeni Usborn, 2016) The game queerweird (lowercase mandatory) is an asymmetrical indie game for three people in shorts around a fire pit. The game's "safety rules" section directly addresses that last point, and you find out quickly that that's because the resolution mechanics include kicking at the firepit. Other resolution mechanics include yelling loud enough to get an echo or making out with one person until the third one gets uncomfortable. Really, queerweird isn't meant to be played. The art seems mostly like it's Usborn's private kink stash touched up to a minimum of reasonability. Cool stuff: Look, if I didn't sell you on it already then there's no cool stuff in here for you.
Giant Robots on Spreadsheets (Henry Stein, 2007) When you have someone who is very, very mathy writing a game, they generally write about a thousand pages of Very Arithmetic game rules involving space, mecha, or both. I know because I did that once. Mechanical engineer Henry Stein went several steps further. He simplified it all down to reasonable heuristics, transferred it to one massive Excel sheet that did all the work for you, and gave it tabs that would let you look up the rules by keyword. He distributed this at-cost on USB 2.0 keys in .xls format. What's that? You have a computer with a USB 3.0 ports and can only read .xlsx format? Yeah, such was the fate of my mathy space game written in WordPerfect as well. Cool stuff: The game balance is impeccable.
Uncomfortable Erotic Tension Cultivator (ListyMcListerson, 2019). UETC is a two-player game / foreplay tool. It is the 21st-century, slightly grown up, itch-diaspora equivalent of naughty dice. (Not Naughty & Dice, that's different.) Cool stuff: Meant to be used over the course of several days to, as the name says, build tension. It puts you into an actual scenario rather than just being "Roll the dice and hope it comes out hot."
ARCANO, the Game of Rules, Magic, and Regulations (Little, Burco, and Frane, 2014) ARCANO is a 5-volume set, outweighing all the other books on this list put together. Each book is in 12x12 inch format, and the whole set makes up a one-foot cube. The books are: character creation, core rules, summoning, shadow magic, and bibliomancy. There are just those three classes. Individually, the rules are not particularly intricate or complex, but there are a lot of them. Cool stuff: The bibliomancy book. Not only is it put together in a way that makes it a useful tool at the game table, but it turns all four other books into bibliomantic resources as well. There are acrostics and anagrams and all kinds of neat things hidden away in it. It's a shame the authors of the other books couldn't keep up.
Just Let's Make Pretend (AnonymousIsMyUsername, 2023). JLMP is a diceless game, if you can even really call it a game. It's like someone wrote down a set of instructions for "make-believe" just in case we ever needed to explain the concept to martians. It's not poorly-written, but you don't need it. Cool stuff: Cites its sources. If you're looking for people who are studying RPGs as a scholarly pursuit, the reference section in JLMP is an excellent place to start.
Thanks again to Lily Vers for the pile of books. Now the question is how I can foist them on someone else. I'm starting to fill up my storage container.
#ttrpg#imaginary#indie ttrpg#rpg#review#sure I'm into roleplaying let me grab my wizard hat#hurr durr magic wand yes we've all heard that one thanks#I look forward to your spreadsheet-driven mecha games

Angels When She Shuts Her Eyes - Mac Miller (Official Audio)
youtube
"Angels (When She Shuts Her Eyes)" by Mac Miller delves into the complexities of love and the intoxicating effects it can have on an individual. The song captures the artist's vulnerabilities and desires while contemplating the uncertainty and potential risks involved in a romantic relationship.
In the first verse, Mac Miller reveals his struggles with addiction and the dichotomy between wanting to clean up his life and indulging in his vices. He acknowledges the pain and difficulty of his past, as well as the lost vision he once had for his future.
The pre-chorus expresses the allure of a particular woman in his life who serves as his source of comfort and escape from his emotional lows. She is portrayed as someone who can lift him up when he feels down and provides a sense of tranquility. The reference to filling his cup with purple implies the consumption of codeine, a common ingredient in the recreational drug cocktail known as "lean." However, it may also symbolize the purple liquid commonly associated with royalty, highlighting the elevated state he feels when with her.
The chorus emphasizes a plea to the woman not to let go of their intense connection. Mac Miller acknowledges that their love is intense and unpredictable, addicting him in a way that could ultimately be destructive. Despite the potential harm, he warns her of the power love holds and expresses hope for a lasting bond.
In the second verse, the artist reflects on his idealized vision of love and a longing for a soulmate who appreciates him beyond physical attributes. He dreams of a deep connection where they can freely express their feelings and be true to themselves. The lyrics suggest a desire for a love that defies societal expectations and norms.
Overall, "Angels (When She Shuts Her Eyes)" explores the intoxicating nature of love and its potential dangers. It serves as a reminder of the euphoria and vulnerability that come with deep emotional connections.

Twyford Code - Janice Hallett

Summary: In a series of voice messages sent to his estranged son, Steven Smith details his quest to discover what happened to his teacher Miss Isles on a fateful school trip forty years ago. As Steven explores his past, he becomes involved in a greater mystery that had consumed Miss Isles, that of the Twyford Code, the conspiracy that a secret code was hidden in the books of WWII-era children’s author Edith Twyford.
Quote: “You must understand that two people may have different memories of the same thing. And both are correct.”
My rating: 3.0/5.0 Goodreads: 3.64/5.0
Review: Lots of fun, and even if not particularly brilliant, the mystery has layers that are trickier and more complex than they first appear. I was a little nervous about the promise of acrostics and codes-neither of which are my thing-but the reader has to do zero code-cracking on their own. All they have to do is follow along as Steve and then his son solve the mystery. Steve is a charming narrator, also more complex than he first appears. However, like in Hallett’s other work, The Appeal, the explanations at the end of the book are too long and the twist is overexplained. The first ten hours of the audiobook went fast, the rest far too slow.

Postmodern Existentialism
In this narrative, I would like to elucidate on the personality meanings given by different philosophers. They are:
Zarathustra Complex
Sisyphus Complex
Prospero Complex
Prometheus Complex
Zarathustra Complex
Zarathustra is heroic man introduced by the Philosopher Nietzsche. He is a person who lives a creative and fulfilling life. He is an architect of freedom and profligacy. The morals of the society are little bothersome to him. He has an exotic mind and dances to the tune of his own song. He is the triumph of individuality.
Sisyphus Complex
Sisyphus in Greek Mythology is a mortal condemned by the Gods to roll a stone uphill and to his angst it rolls down and he is forced to repeat this task again and again. Camus uses Sisyphus as a negative theology. For him Sisyphus is an existential being caught up in an absurd and monotonous life. I have revised Camus Sisyphus and made him a hero whose life is an authentication of essence, a life of merriment, opulence, catharsis and prosperity.
Prospero Complex
Here I would like to make an intrusion onto the Philosopher Sartre who said that man is condemned to be free as he is responsible to the choices he makes. I would like to refute him by saying that man is privileged to be free and that the choices he makes make him privileged. Life is the actualization of the essence of meaning.
Prometheus Complex
The existential philosophers Sartre and Camus declare life to be meaningless, chaotic, absurd and monotonous. I would like to say life for Prometheus is a life of celebrating meaning. Here is an acrostic for life.

The Prayer/ Meditation: Ana BeKho’aḥ – The Name of 42 Letters
The prayer ‘Ana BeKho’aḥ‘ is based on what is known among Kabbalists as ‘The Name of 42 Letters’, this powerful combination of letters in famous for its holiness, and is known to give the ability to overcome obstacles and judgments, the illusion of matter and the limitations of logic.
Sources and Meaning

Ana BeKo’ah Amulet / Persia, 18th Century / Israel Museum
The prayer known as ‘Ana BeKho’aḥ’ is attributed to the rabbinic sage Rabbi Nehunia Ben Hakana, known also as the author of Sefer Hakana, one of the earliest Books on Kabbalah (1st century CE). Like many prayers in the Siddur, this prayer is named after its first two words. This important prayer has seven verses and is sealed by the eighth line Barukh shem kevod malkhuto le’olam va’ed (Blessed is His glorious name His kingdom is forever) that is also used after the first line of the Shema Yisrael prayer.
This Hebrew prayer appears in every Siddur (Prayer Book) in many places:
In the beginning of Shaḥarit, the morning prayer- in the section that recites the Morning Temple Offerings (Korbanot)
In Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming the Sabbath) before the song Lekha Dodi.
In the Bedtime Shema
It is recited during the funeral service.
The Name of 42 Letters
Each of the 7 verses of the “Ana BeKho’aḥ” prayer has 6 words. That 42 letter sequence is made up from the first letter of each word (acrostic) of the prayer and comprises what is known in Kabbalah as ‘The Name of 42 Letters’, one of the most important names of the Creator.
Rabbi Neḥunia Ben Hakana, like other rabbinic sages in his era, 1st – 3rdCentury CE, feared the potential loss of knowledge and secrets of the Torah (seeing the exile and The Dark Ages coming) and sought to preseve it for future generations. This was the reason that Our Sages wrote down the Mishna, the Zohar and, afterwards, the Talmud. The prayer “Ana BeKho’aḥ” was a way of encoding and hiding The Name of 42 Letters in the Siddur, (prayer book). Until this day few know the secret of this prayer.
The Acrostic – the sequence of the first letter of each word of each of the 7 verses appears in many prayer books alongside its corresponding line.
According to the Zohar one reads the words in pairs while also concentrating on the first letters (initials) in pairs. This is because every combination of 6 initials (first letters of each word of a line) corresponds to the 6 wings of the Seraphim (Angels, Isaiah 6:20), and the wings of the Seraphim are placed in pairs. The purpose of this prayer, in principle, is to elevate our mundane world and our mundane, limited consciousness (Malkhut, Asiya) to higher levels.
Origin of ‘The Name of 42 Letters’
The Name of 42 Letters existed from the dawn of creation and is encrypted in the first 42 letters of the story of creation in Genesis, from the Bet (the first letter in the Torah) of Beresheet until the letter bet of Vavohu. A complex mathematical formula transforms the first 42 letters of Genesis into the holy Name of 42.

Home Protection – Ana BeKho’aḥ Wall Tapestry
The Powers of ‘The Name of 42 Letters’
The power of the ‘Name of 42’ endows the user with the ability to transcend from the illusions and limitations of physicality with its’ emptiness, and the restrictions that are associated with our reality. These limitations force us to have to make an effort to elevate above them in order to connect to true spirituality. Usage of this name is essential to the process of spiritual elevation.
Because of the Kavana (meditation, meaning and intention) of this holy name, the times to recite it are:
Shaḥarit – The Morning Prayer, after reciting the Korbanot (temple offerings) in order to allow elevation to the upper realms or worlds in the beginning of this important morning connection.
Friday night, before Lekha Dodi. At this time the worlds ascend and we need this prayer to help us ascend to Shabbat
Sephirat Ha’Omer – The Counting of The Omer.
Bed Time Shema – before going to bed, in order to support the soul who needs to ascend to the place of quarry or well of souls (according to the Tikunei HaZohar)
Before a person departs this world, when a person feels that his time to depart has come, after the Vidui (confession & confirmation).
During the funeral service, in order to help the deceased to elevate to the upper worlds.
Any time there’s a need to elevate above the confusion and stress of daily struggle.
The most common way Kabbalists meditate on the ‘Name of 42’ is by contemplating on the 6 initials formed from the first letter of each word of each of the seven verses.
Sephirot
Each sequence of the 7 acrostics of the seven verses of the Ana BeKho’aḥ has the ability to connect us to one Sephira or a spiritual dimension above the illusionary and physical world. Using each permutation is like a secret password that enables us to access the treasure chamber in the upper worlds filled with light, power, energy and wisdom.
According to the wisdom of Kabbalah each one of the seven sequences controls a range of aspects of our reality. The seven Sephirot are expressed in the material world in many forms, for example, the spiritual dimensions that control each of the seven planets or one of the seven days of the week.
It is written in the Gate of Meditations (Sha’ar HaKavanot), of the Writings of the ARI, the holy ARI of Tsfat (Safed), that without the prayer Ana BeKho’aḥ, one would not be able to elevate from the physical world and ascend to higher levels of meditation or prayer. Therefore it is worthwhile to recite the ‘Ana BeKho’aḥ’ every morning before we start our daily actions. Because of its great importance, ‘The Name of 42’, the Ana BeKho’aḥ, is encoded in every important prayer in the Hebrew Prayer Book, and through this we are allowed to elevate to much higher spiritual levels and to control the channels of abundance that are so important for the success of our lives. ‘Success’ is achieved when we experience a flow of abundance and good fortune, meaning a manifestation of ongoing flow of spiritual energy from the higher worlds to all aspects of our lives, both material and physical.
The power of exercising this prayer/meditation, the Ana BeKho’aḥ, every morning, according to the teachings of the holy Ari, is to elevate us up and above the illusory physical world, above our limited perceptions (thinking within the box) and above our limited and used up belief systems. The result will be newly acquired abilities to break through and to reach higher levels of consciousness that will result in more elevated ways of experiencing our reality and a higher awareness – different and more fulfilling.
It is possible to use this prayer during the day without limit, not only in the beginning of the day. It can be used before any important task, when a challenging problem appears or at any time there’s a need to connect to higher, more elevated levels (worlds). Connecting to the higher worlds where an abundance of wisdom and life force is flowing is what allows us to change and grow in quantum leaps. The Ana BeKho’aḥ prayer helps us to open up (and receive) the bliss that is needed in order to achieve true positive change.
Throughout the generations, the Ana BeKho’aḥ prayer was very important to the Kabbalists who knew how to use the enormous power of the holy and powerful letters’ combinations in order to improve their destiny, to elevate beyond the restrictions of logic and to fulfill the soul. Therefore it is possible to find the Ana BeKho’aḥ and its letter combinations, the ‘Name of 42’, on the walls of many old synagogues.

Atara – Tallit Collar Embroidery – Ana BeKo’aḥ
Kavana (meaning, meditation & intention) of the seven letter combination of the Ana BeKho’aḥ Prayer:
The first verse, Ḥesed:
אנא בכח. גדולת ימינך. תתיר צרורה: אבג יתץ
This verse connects us to the Sephira of Ḥesed (Loving-Kindness), the first of the seven Sephirot (of Ze’ir Anpin). The Sephira of Ḥesed represents the power of unconditional love, compassion and sharing. The numerical value of the acrostics of the words of this first verse אבג יתץ (506) equals אהבת חנם – unconditional love. According to the Kabbalists, this verse has the power of all the other verses combined, and it connects us directly to the frequency of Ets Ḥaim עץ חיים The Tree of Life, a parallel universe where all are one, before the Fall of Adam, before the breaking of the world of unity. This is a reality of truth without the limitations of physicality, and without obstructions created by negative energy. By contemplating and meditating on this sequence of אבג יתץ we are connected to a reality of completion, true unity, and truth. Connection to this frequency focuses us on our true spiritual work. This sequence gives us the power to overcome the illusion of the limitations of space and time.
According to the Zohar this combination controls the cosmic window, among other things, to the planet Saturn and the zodiac signs of Capricorn and Aquarius (both controlled by Saturn).
The Second Verse, Gevura:
קבל רנת. עמך שגבנו. טהרנו נורא: קרע שטן
This verse connects to the Sephira of Gevura. The acrostics of the words of this verse are: קרע שטן. The power of this verse according to the ARI is to return to the state of perfection of the spiritual worlds that were torn and descended into the lower worlds. The power to tear up and cancel the illusion of Satan (negative) Consciousness in ourselves and to cancel or sweeten the judgments; the desire to receive for oneself alone, and all the judgments experienced by way of our anger, hatred or other negative, selfish emotions. We use this combination during the sounding of the Shofar on Rosh Hashana to cancel all the judgments according to the holy ARI. The numeric value of the letters קרע שטן equals that of the word תשכח Tishkaḥ (728), to forget. We use this combination with the intention that we want to forget the limitations that the Satan Consciousness binds us to, limiting us by having the false belief that we are not able to overcome the limitations we are facing.
According to the Zohar this controls the cosmic window, among other things, to control the planet Jupiter and the zodiac signs of Sagittarius and Pisces.
The Third Verse, Tiferet:
נא גיבור. דורשי יחודך. כבבת שמרם : נגד יכש
This verse connects to the Sephira of Tiferet.
The acrostics of the words of this verse are: נגד יכש
There are two permutations in this sequence:
1. נגד has the numeric value of the word Zan (57). The number 57 represents spiritual abundance, and worldly livelihood. This combination signifies that the abundance will only flow into our lives when we resist our innate nature to take for ourselves alone. Only when we resist the sefishness and transform it to caring and sharing will we open and connect to the flow of abundance in all our actions.
2. יכשappears in the verse מי שמך לאיש (Who made you our judge?). Moses used this combination in the Torah (Exodus 2:14) to kill the Egyptian, and its power is to take out of any living being the good sparks and light contained within their Klippot ( negative forces), in order that there not remain any life force for the evil within. In this situation the evil will wither and die and then the energy of life can be restored. This combination is able to help us renew and return ourselves to a pure, embryonic, state.
According to the Zohar this permutation controls the cosmic window, among other things to the planet Mars which controls the zodiac signs of Aries and Scorpio.
The fourth verse, Netsaḥ:
ברכם טהרם. רחמי צדקתך. תמיד גמלם. בטר צתג
This verse connects to the Sephira of Netsaḥ.
The acrostics of the words of this verse are: בטר צתג.
From this verse we receive the spiritual ability to draw vision, confidence and certainty that are the prerequisite for true victory. This power enables us to rise up after we have stumbled, to finish what we started, to work vigorously, to overcome obstacles and remove all doubt in order to complete the most difficult tasks.
According to the Zohar, this permutation controls the cosmic window to the Sun, among other things, which controls the zodiac sign of Leo.
The fifth verse:
חסין קדוש. ברב טובך. נהל עדתך. חקב טנע
This verse connects to Sephira Hod.
The acrostics of the words of this verse are: חקב טנע.
This verse helps us in asking to see the secrets of the universe and the truth above logic and the five senses.
According to the Zohar this permutation controls the cosmic window to the planet Venus, among other things, which controls the zodiac signs of Taurus and Virgo.
The sixth verse:
יחיד גאה. לעמך פנה. זוכרי קדושתך. יגל פזק
This verse connects to the Sephira of Yesod.
The acrostics of the words of this verse are: יגל פזק.
The numerical value of these six letters is 230 ירך (– thigh, hip). This is the name for victory in every battle of life (The Book of Root of Names, Rabbi Moshe Zakut).
“This name reveals the Bliss that is coming through the Yesod, therefore, this name should be used in order to reveal the wisdom in the 6th millennium”. (Adir BaMarom, Rabbi Moshe Haim Luzzatto)
According to the Zohar this permutation controls the cosmic window to the planet Mercury, among other things, which controls the zodiac signs of Gemini and Virgo.
The seventh verse:
שוועתנו קבל. ושמע צעקתנו. יודע תעלומות. שקו צית
This verse connects to the Sephira Malkhut.
The acrostics of the words of this verse are: שקו צית.
This permutation connects to the treasure of endless fulfillment which is waiting for us in the final days. Connecting to this name gives us unlimited power in times when we are weak and empty.
According to the Zohar this permutation controls the cosmic window to the Moon, among other things, which contols the sign of Cancer.
After completing all seven verses,
ברוך שם כבוד מלכותו לעולם ועד
‘Barukh Shem Kevod Malkhuto LeOlam Va’ed’
is said in order to embody (seal) the prayer since this is one of the holy names of the Creator (just like the priests and the people were saying in The Temple in Yom Kippur after each time The Holy Name was heard). This last line is pronounced silently except on Yom Kippur.

How to use the Ana BeKho’aḥ:
The Zohar explains that the Ana BeKho’aḥ helps us to elevate to the spiritual world and, as we recite the words, angels come to take us to higher dimensions. The words of the Ana BeKho’aḥ can be seen as what activates the wings of the angels. There are 7 angels each with 6 wings. Each pair of letters corresponds to a pair of wings that elevates us. Therefore we say the words in each verse in pairs.
There are a few levels of using this powerful prayer:
The simplest level is to read the words of the prayer. After completing each verse, contemplate, for a while (without pronouncing), on the 6 letter acrostics of that verse. Focus on your desire to elevate your consciousness beyond the limits of reason, logic and emotion. As is known, the use of logic and emotion that brought us to a certain level can only strengthen its hold on us in this reality. Our desire, every day, is to rise over the logic and emotions of yesterday and reinvent ourselves. This goal can be achieved, according to the Kabbalists, when we invest time and energy in our spiritual work. This, first of all, begins with thoughts of unconditional love; that is the necessary condition to connect to the endless light, boundless wealth, wisdom and unity that emanates from the Creator. When we do our job as humans, we can return the universe to the state that the Creator created it – perfection and harmony. Therefore it is worthwhile to begin the day with the prayer Ana BeKho’aḥ, and to use it whenever we encounter a frightening situation of confusion, chaos or woe. Even without meditation, when time does not permit, just concentrating on the letters is beneficial.
A higher level is to say the the prayer slowly, stopping after each verse of the Ana BeKho’aḥ and with intention (saying it with all your heart and soul), at the same time looking at the letter combinations according to what was written above. We concentrate on the letter combination and imagine the white light of the creator flowing through the letters filling our life with light, perfection and balance. There is no limit to the time of the prayer and each of the permutations. Everything is according to need.
At a more complex level, we add to the previous Kavanot the permutations of two letters per each month according to Sefer Yetsira (The Book of Formation) written by Abraham the Patriarch. In order to do that, use the chart below, find the month (according to the Hebrew calendar, and concentrate on the two letters of the month after completing the contemplation over the verse that rules the planet of that month. Imagine and visualize the flow of abundance coming through the two letters of that month and visualize how this flow solves your challenges and elevate you above the obstacles gracefully. Then you can use your imagination to clean (purify) and to illuminate the areas in your life that you need to transform or fix, elevating your thoughts, instincts and aspirations.
The days of the week are ruled, each by the corresponding verse, 1-7, Sunday – Shabbat

The Prayer Ana BeKho’aḥ and the Jewish Prayer Book – The Siddur
For generations the prayer of Ana BeKho’aḥ was inside the regular order of the prayers all over the Jewish world. It is found in the Morning Prayer in the Korbanot (morning offerings), in the Bedtime Shema, in Kabbalat Shabbat (Friday night welcoming of The Shabbat Service) before Lekha Dodi.
Shema Yisrael and Ana BeKho’aḥ
Because of the enormous importance of the ‘Name of 42’ as a powerful tool to transcend above the limits of the physical world of illusion and logic, it can be found encoded in every important Jewish prayer. For example, the first paragraph of the Shema Yisrael (Deuteronomy 6:5-9) contains 42 words and each word corresponds to one of the 42 letters of the ‘Name of 42’. There are excellent prayer books where this name of 42 can be found in the words of the verses in the Shema prayer.
The Amidah (The Silent Prayer or Shemoneh Esreh)
Another example is the prayer the Shemoneh Esreh also known as the Amidah, which is the second most important prayer after the Shema. The first blessing contains 42 words according to the Sefer Ha Zohar and according to the wisdom of Kabbalah; each word corresponds to one of the letters of the ‘Name of 42’ in order. In some prayer books this is not the case because of errors and omissions in printing during hundreds of years and previously, during centuries that the books used to be copied by hand.
The Kadish and Ana BeKho’aḥ
Another important prayer in the prayer book is the Kadish, one of its central sentences is the important verse comprised of the words: VeYisthabaḥ, VeYitpa’ar, VeYitromam, VeYitnaseh, VeYithadar, VeYit’aleh, VeYit’halal. These 7 words have each six letters (in Hebrew) – 42 letters. Each one of the 7 words begins with the letter Vav that has the value of 6 (each Hebrew letter is being used also as a number), 7X6=42.
For further study on this prayer, meditations and kavanot please enter the University of Live Kabbalah.
The Ana BeKho’aḥ and the ‘Name of 42’ in art, charms and jewelry
Because of the profound importance of the Ana BeKho’aḥ as a prayer tool especially in times of trouble, the ‘Name of 42’ has been central to designs in many historical Jewish artworks. This theme is woven into the dominant theme of hanging pictures on the walls of Synagogues in Jewish communities throughout the entire world. Almost all synagogues possess art like this on their walls, in North Africa and Europe, especially on the wall facing Jerusalem.
This theme repeats itself in the art of jewelry created in various Jewish communities, east and west, and is also standard in many charms created with these combinations. A display of these works can be found in the Perfect World Museum.

OpenAI Unveils Advanced ChatGPT with Enhanced Math, Coding, and Science Abilities
OpenAI has released an upgraded version of its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, now equipped with advanced capabilities to handle complex tasks in fields like math, coding, and science. This new iteration is powered by OpenAI o1, a breakthrough AI technology designed to address common issues found in previous models, such as struggling with basic math or generating incomplete code.
The updated ChatGPT, introduced on Thursday, is engineered to "reason" more effectively than its predecessors. Unlike earlier versions that provided immediate responses, the new ChatGPT takes a more deliberate approach to problem-solving. "This model can take its time, think through the problem in English, and break it down to find the best solution," said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist.
During a live demonstration, Pachocki and OpenAI technical fellow Szymon Sidor showcased the bot solving an intricate acrostic puzzle, answering a Ph.D.-level chemistry question, and diagnosing a patient based on detailed medical information. These examples highlighted the chatbot’s enhanced reasoning skills and its potential for tackling more sophisticated tasks.
OpenAI o1 technology represents a broader trend in AI development, where companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are all pushing to create systems that can reason through problems step by step, mimicking human logic. Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI ensures this technology will soon be integrated into its products, offering a range of practical applications, from helping programmers write code to serving as automated math tutors.
This structured problem-solving ability could also be valuable in fields like physics, where complex mathematical formulas need to be generated, or healthcare, where researchers can use AI to assist in experiments.
Since ChatGPT’s initial release in 2022, it has revolutionized AI interactions by responding to user queries, writing essays, and generating code. However, earlier models were not without their shortcomings—occasionally producing mistakes, buggy code, or repeating misinformation found online.
To overcome these challenges, OpenAI has employed reinforcement learning in the new system. This process allows the AI to learn from trial and error, improving its accuracy by repeatedly working through problems and identifying successful strategies. However, the system remains imperfect and can still make errors. "It’s not going to be perfect," Sidor admitted, "but it’s more likely to provide the right answer by working harder."
The upgraded ChatGPT is now available to ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Teams subscribers, as well as developers and businesses seeking to incorporate the technology into their own applications.
In standardized testing, OpenAI reports that its new model outperforms previous versions. On the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) qualifying exam, the prior iteration of ChatGPT scored 13%, while OpenAI o1 achieved an impressive 83%. However, experts caution that standardized tests may not fully reflect real-world performance, especially when it comes to tasks like tutoring students.
"There’s a difference between problem-solving and assistance," said Angela Fan, a research scientist at Meta. "New models that reason can solve problems, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can guide someone through their homework."
Despite its limitations, OpenAI’s latest version of ChatGPT marks a significant leap forward in AI, with the potential to tackle more intricate, real-world challenges across multiple industries.

(Etta Sandry “Pivot: Moi-même” and “Pivot: Big Squish”, Cotton and cottolin, handwoven on Jacquard loom//Cotton and wool, handwoven on Jacquard loom)
There are some incredible pieces in Waffle Weave Invitational, one of the current exhibitions at Summit Artspace. A few selections are pictured, but head to the gallery’s website to see all of the work on view.
From curator Stephen Tornero (who also has work in the show)-
This show was conceived as an idea to focus on a specific structural variable of a textile, and see how many different variations artists, artisans, and craftspeople would be able to produce. While researching the development of weaving technology, a loom with the capability to create complex structures was developed around 600 CE simultaneously in different cultures. This structure could have been produced by these looms, but also could have been designed much earlier by hand-manipulation of threads by the weaver. The waffle structure is so unique in its ability to transform a textile- seemingly a two dimensional surface- into a three dimensional object that has depth as shown by many repeated square pyramidal cells. Historically, this structure was used to create a textile that would hold water in its cells for cleaning or drying, or to help insulate the body with tiny pockets of air. This structure can be modified by changing the color of the threads with which it is woven, the fiber content of those threads, or even by expanding the amount of threads used in a cell, expanding the scale.
Statements from the artists about the work pictured above (from the Summit Artspace website)-
Stephen Tornero– Don’t Tell Me– “This piece is part of a continuing study of material, color, and structure in textiles. I have been mesmerized with the “waffle weave” structure and its ability to create large, three dimensional pockets of space. This pieces experiments with the combination of the flexible, fibrous wool yarns with the rigid neon acrylic rods. These two materials are combined in a large textile in order to explore the effects that this unique weaving structure will have on these materials. This use these two opposing materials in the piece creates a dialogue between the traditional usefulness of this wool weaving and its display on the wall as a work of art.”
Chad Troyer– Crashing Waves and Calming Shores– “The gradating structure allows for the weft to float acrost the surface of the weaving for varying lengths, from half an inch to nearly the whole width. The warp is allowed to float for varying lengths, but not nearly as long as the weft. After it was taken off the loom, the weaving was stretched. Parts of it were pulled, and others were left loose, allowing the floats to be accented by the folding and tautness of the cloth. The two pieces are the same piece of cloth cut apart, however they both display a different state of being: turbulent & calm.”
Jen P. Harris– Oscillator and Sphinx– “These small weaving-painting hybrids are part of an ongoing, experimental body of work in which I am developing a heterogeneous formal language that both honors and questions histories and conventions of painting and weaving.”
Trey D. Gehring– Stacked– “Stacked follows a line of investigation by the artist into a poststructuralist analysis of language as a system of symbols that lack meaning beyond context. The piece melds the namesake with the woven structure itself creating a hyper-literal interpretation of the exhibition’s theme. However, an understanding of the theoretical underpinning is unnecessary and secondary to the enjoyment of the whimsical and humorous nature of the work.”
Etta Sandry– Pivot: Moi-même and Pivot: Big Squish- “My woven work focuses on samples that explore dimensionality in woven cloth using techniques such as multi-layer weaving, pleating, and woven structures that are elastic, self-shaping, and otherwise transformative, like the pocketed cells of waffle weave. This work creates a series of translations between the flat draft and the materiality of the cloth. Weaving is a technically binary structure: a warp thread can be either raised or lowered. When drafted, woven structure is drawn as a flat grid. Woven in multiple layers, cords, and pleats, weaving maintains its inherent binary nature but takes on a new physical dimensionality. Between the flat draft and the woven cloth, there is an unknowable material transformation that reflects the nuance, radical variation, and possibility that emerges from a seemingly set and limited system. In these works, this variation is expressed through two large waffle weave samples that test the limits of the waffle structure. Each piece weaves the same design of increasingly large waffle cells. Moi-même presents a balanced the waffle weave in which warp and weft threads of a similar weight and color draw out a subtle loosening of the structure as the size of the cells increase. In The Big Squish, the waffle structure is boldly packed, extended and distorted by colorful wool wefts.”
This exhibition closes 3/16/24.

I'm pretty sure this time Quo is giving Cyg riddles/ciphers to solve, which (I'm guessing here, it might not be this complex) the answers probably either are another riddle themselves that when solved leads us to the ultimate answer/conclusion, likely something so shocking/out of left field that it catches all of us off guard and gives Quo the moment of chaos she'll need to slip away into the shadows since we all know it's her running this round and we'll all be watching her quite closely
It is possible (however i find it incredibly unlikely) that Quo isn't the REVENGE anon, and the REVENGE anon is perhaps Quo's accomplice of sorts?
Take all of this ^ with a grain of salt, I'm just speculating
And now my attempts to break this ask down for funsises
"This mystery is not like the ones you are used to, Detective Cygnus"
Well obviously, the other mysteries have been about trying to figure out who the anons were. We already have solid proof and about 90% certainty that Quo is the one running all of this, with maybe an accomplice or two. This mystery is about solving the riddles Quo (and her accomplices??) have set up.
"You may need help. Scratch that, you will definitely need help. You cannot solve this without other users."
Weather Quo is insistent that Cyg will need help bc of the sheer volume/complexity of riddles she (and her accomplices??) has created, or perhaps that the riddles will be sent to other players is unclear. However, I'm inclined to believe that the riddles will require niche knowledge to solve, perhaps a few are centered around details of a fandom Cyg isn't in, or a fic of some sort. (I believe one of the riddles from last saga had something to do with a fanfic that Quo had written) Or maybe we'll need an overabundance of knowledge on poetry forms or other such details. (Like how many of us didn't notice that the first REVENGE ask was an acrostic poem until @rubiatinctorum pointed it out.) It may also simply be that once in the midst of a game, we'll over analyze the smaller details instead of the looking at the bigger picture (once again see the REVENGE ask) and a pair of eyes that aren't as involved as the main players are could prove useful.
"So I've taken the liberty for letting you know who some of your allies are"
It's possible Quo is referencing the asks she sent to everyone. (I believe @igotthisaccountunderduress has a masterpost for the game where she tags everyone who's playing) Otherwise she could be mentioning a private correspondence between her and Cyg, though I find this unlikely, and he doesn't seem to know what she's referring to.
"Beware though, not all of them are the correct ones."
If Quo was referencing the asks, it's not only possible, but highly likely that she sent asks to her accomplices as well as Cyg's allies, if she has them, so she has an inside ear of sorts, or someone to deliberately keep the group off track. I say this not to foster distrust within our group, but to simply point out all the facts.
This mystery is not like the ones you're used to, Detective Cygnus. You may need help.
Scratch that, you will definitely need help. You cannot solve this without other users. So I've taken the liberty for letting you know who some of your allies are.
Beware though, not all of them are the correct ones.
squints
where did you let me know. was it in that ask. hold on i gotta go back- oh by the way. you're gonna be the one cataloguing this. i have a new respect for barbara gordon

POVERTY
Poverty is everybody's problem. Everybody in a sense that boy or girl, young or old, even rich or poor, that is one of their problems. Almost all of the Filipinos are experiencing poverty and it's so sad that the innocent children are the one who affected too much.

At their very young age, they are taught how to earn for a living, just for their own selves and for their family as well.

As a student i learned to appreciate the little things that my parents provided for me just lik when we have food, they always say to us that, "don't waste your food because they are children out there who haven't eaten yet. Be thankful everyday because you can eat three times a day."

My parents always telling me that the only way to overcome poverty is 'education'. They always reminding me and my siblings to study hard so that we don't experience that kind of life because it's so hard and sad. They always teach us to be 'generous'. They want us to finish our study so that we can get a great job in the future so we are able to provide fo family needs and for other people who need help. So, I study hard to become a successful so i can help other people.

We can change not only ourselves, but also the whole world if we can beat poverty. Dream big and believe in your own self, and it's up to us on how to develop it. After all, success will come on your way.

#dream big #we can beat poverty #education is important #better world
FLASH FICTION
I stepped outside into a gorgeous summer day. The sun made everything look bright and cheerful. It would have been an ideal day for a picnic—if I still had a special someone to picnic with.
Nobody would have suspected the thunderstorm going on inside my heart. Lightnings illuminated hidden emotions briefly, followed by a clasp of crushed hopes. Droplets of internal tears poured down, washing off what remained of my romantic dreams.
I sat at the bus stop with a book, reading the same paragraph for the fifth time and trying to look indifferent to my internal weather patterns. Sunglasses masked my puffy eyes and returned the reflection of a nearby flower. I will never love again. Love is just an illusion leading nowhere.
I was so absorbed in my thoughts, I didn't notice the man taking a seat beside me.
"Excuse me, Miss, but I couldn't help noticing that you're reading O. Henry. He's my favorite author."
His deep voice startled me. His friendly smile warmed up my damp heart and blew away some of the storm clouds.
"He's my favorite as well." I tried to return his smile.
We spent the next fifteen minutes talking about literature and its influence in today's culture. The bus came and went. We pretended not to notice.
"By the way, my name is Mark." As his warm hand shook mine, an electric current coursed through me.
"Do you care to join me for lunch?" he added, ignoring my blushing cheeks. "Let's start all over again, shall we? I'm sorry about this morning."
A rainbow appeared, leading the way to a heart of gold. I followed it.
COMEDY DRAMA
"What the heck! Look what you did to my dress? You are so idiotlt! Where's your manager, I will talk to him.
"Manager immediately? You don't want to talk to me ma'am?"
"Ha! You even have the guts to laugh at me! You are so annoying"
Then the manager came. "Hi what's going on here? What's this mess?" He scanned the dress of the lady.
Oh! Are you the manager? Your waitress is so idiot, look what she did to my dress, it so dirty. You know this is so expensive.
"Is it true? You did that to her?" He look at Klare. "Sir, i didn't mean to do that. Is it my fault that she does not looking where she go?"
"Look your waitress is so aaghh!! annoying me so much!" Then she made a face.
"I'm apologizing in behalf of her ma'am, shes just new her so that she's still learning. I'm so sorry ma'am."
"Okay! because I'm late with my meeting, I will forgive her but make sure that this will not happen again." Then she's ready to leave the coffee shop.
"Yes ma'am, I'm so sorry again."
He asked Klare to sit. "Klare next time ba careful with your action so that it does not gonna happen again."
"Yes Sir! Sorry Sir! I will do better next time."
"Okay good. That lady is so loud and her dress os not that good hmmp!"
"Hahaha! It's true sir it was so cheap fashion."
"Okay stop haha go back to work."

CRAFT ESSAY
Within weeks of his inauguration as president of the Philippines in June 2016, Rodrigo R. Duterte became the most internationally known Filipino leader since Ferdinand Marcos, the country’s infamous dictator, and Corazon Aquino, the iconic housewife-turned-president who championed the restoration of democracy in 1986. A great deal of media attention has been paid to Duterte’s murderous war on drugs as well as to his often crass and controversial statements. His embrace of China and his visceral disdain for the United States has garnered additional attention in foreign policy circles, and he frequently is included in media reports and scholarly articles on the rise of populism globally.
Although the attention to Duterte and his brutal drug war is warranted, much less attention has been paid to his administration’s broader policy agenda, its approach to politics and governance, and its broader impact on democratic institutions and norms. As a candidate, Duterte promised that he would produce real and rapid improvements in the lives of Filipinos, particularly by aggressively addressing crime and corruption. Two and a half years into his presidency, it is both warranted and possible to assess what has and has not changed under Duterte. The picture is a mixed one, with elements of change, continuity, and regression.
The Duterte government’s track record regarding human rights and democracy is undoubtedly disturbing. It has run roughshod over human rights, its political opponents, and the country’s democratic institutions. The combination of the Philippines’ powerful presidency and the malleability of most of its political institutions is resulting in significant democratic backsliding. But to focus only on Duterte fails to appreciate two other important elements: the extent to which this degradation has happened through nominally legal means, and the limited pushback to date by groups and institutions opposed to strongman rule. This working paper takes an in-depth look at the complex dynamics contributing to democratic backsliding in the Philippines.
