sorry if this question is already answered elsewhere but how much time passes between the creation of ishmael vs the modern siren setting with qedivar et al?
intentionally never stated because i don't want to box myself in with a ridiculous number that i have to retcon later haha. safe to say it's several centuries, maybe a thousand years, maybe less. who knows!

PLEASE DO NOT TAG AS YOUR OWN OC OR PAIRING.
Nathan and Ruben share a bond more powerful than most; mutual understanding through past experiences no one should ever have to go through, and through past actions so horrible they cannot be spoken of. Their grief and the blood on their hands binds them to the STEM technology they created, which has alienated them from the rest of the world— but they give each other the comfort they have both longed for so desperately for years, and that is all they need. They are each other's counterpart; you cannot imagine one without the other, like two sides of the same coin. Through their pain, their grief, their desire, and their regret, they have become one.

It's funny how most every cyberpunk story or setting thought that due to technology taking over people's lives and humanity, computer literacy would become commonplace enough that the very term would disappear. Everyone in Night City or whatever is super into hacking or can at least give you the difference between hardware, software, antivirus, spam, etc. To not know the basic gists or cybernetics and cyber security is paramount to not knowing how to count or how to read.
In reality we're about to enter an age where knowing how to create a folder or a zip file is back to being ancient lore inscribed in tablets that only the 30 year old who works at your IT office knows how to do. Phones and the growing marketability of easy-access no-customization technology means kids just don't use computers anymore. And it's crazy how fast it happened.
When I was in kindergarten we still had "computer class" once a week, and it was objectively useless for everyone in my class. Regardless of our age or interests, all of us had casual PC time either at home or in cyber cafes, all of us knew how to do things the teachers many times struggled with. The moment typing machine class became keyboard typing class, computers were already dominating most of our time. I learned how to navigate a computer the same way I learned English; by myself, because it was vital for my own interests.
And between highly streamlined video games, single umbrella closed OSs and everything being a fucking app, a 14 year old nowadays is lucky if they know what quotation marks do to your Google results. It's genuinely harrowing how the future is tech-dependent, yet we're becoming completely tech-illiterate.
The worst part is that it's completely on purpose by the tech industry. Much like not being able to fix your own products when they break, if you simply don't know what your phone or your computer can *do*, it's much easier to sell you a borderline identical one a little earlier than you'd actually need it. Phone updates are already pretty much semantic; you can't even see the difference between new models and old ones anymore, unless the visual difference is the point. And it all just gets more and more expensive for less and less bang for your buck.
We never expected the cyberpunk dystopia to be dull, and to rely on making us dumb. Crazy how well it worked.

FABULIST FILES, 1/? — ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN
Fable's AO3 tag currently contains 5,842 fics. The tag was most active from early 2020 to early 2021, when Haksu and Eunsu were engaging in constant fanservice with no heterosexual explanation, to the delight of permanently online Fabulists everywhere. They (mostly Haksu) continue to be among the most popular within the tag.
FILTER BY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As expected, Haksu features as the most popular character and makes an appearances in half of the most popular ships. Other somewhat frequent character appearances include Eden of Neon Nights, usually as Andrew's friend, and Field Day's Dart, usually as Byeonghwi's friend. The most popular alternate universe fics set the group in college/university, given the fact that most of them actually attended university. Like many other fourth gen boy groups, they also have more than their fair share of explicit fics.
NOTABLE FANFICS
Tumblr media
The fanfiction with the most kudos is "TIME OF MY (YOUR) LIFE," written by nhys and published over the course of 2022. It gained popularity for its characterization of the Fable members and sense of humor, and for the author's constant promotion of it on Twitter. It spawned a few spin-offs and sequels by the original author and a few others, detailing events of the other years of Byeonghwi's college experience.
Tumblr media
One of the most popular fanfics is heartsick's "BETWEEN US," published from mid-2020 to mid-2021. In many online Fabulist circles, it's considered to be one of The (with a capital T) Fable fics. Written and published during 2su's heyday, it continues to be a staple on fic recommendation lists, even if newer fans don't really know who Eunsu is.
Tumblr media
Generally considered to be the first Fable fanfiction ever, "TAKE CARE OF THAT SWEET TOOTH" was published on September 23, 2018, a little over a month after the group debuted. Although mostly denounced by the original author as an obvious mischaracterization a few years later, it remains notable for kickstarting the tag.

omg congrats on graduating!! ib is HELL. out of curiosity may i ask what your ee was about? i love hearing people talk about them
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I think the IB may actually be hell on earth like what the actual fuck was the past two years of my life-
I did a computer science EE! the topic is kind of niche so it might take a little extra explaining but basically I analyse different implementations of the hash table (a.k.a. dictionary or hash map).
so hash tables have this thing called a "collision resolution method" which basically prevents the hash table from violently vomitting under specific circumstances. what I do in my EE is take two of these collision resolution methods and compare how they affect the computational time of the resulting program.
I do a theoretical analysis (called "big-o notation") and an experimental analysis with data and graphs, where I write two programs that utilise each collision resolution method and find their computational times. the rest is basically a typical science paper (interpretation of results, limitations + expansions on experiment, conclusion etc.)
there was a lot that I glossed over but that's the basic gist of it!
oh and for my non-IB mutuals, the EE is a 4,000 essay that every IB student is required to write. you get to choose the topic but it must be a research paper, which means reading academic journals and citing sources n all that jazz.

one of my friends is a biologist & i was really amused hearing some of her stories yesterday because they put into context just how believable newt's kaiju drift is as Shit A Biologist Would Do. like my friend has personally met both a guy who got infected with a botfly larva and didn't do anything to remove it (because he just didn't mind), and another guy who identified a tapeworm species by intentionally exposing himself to it (he had it narrowed down to 2 species and needed to know if it was the one that would infect humans) (it was)

o(*^▽^*)┛Hello friends! Here's this week's report for you!
Tumblr media
Next Update (Chapter 4):
Opening: 100%
Avoid August/Confront Him: 95%
A Normal Day at Work: 0%
You Can Fix This, Right? 🤡: 0%
Keep Your Friends Close...: 0%
Avoidant Route: 0%
Tumblr media
The Avoid/Confront path is nearly done! I have a few sections to finish up but otherwise it's all good to go. Ended up with more variant paths than I originally planned for, as per usual lol.
I'm very excited to start on the next part, but I do foresee it taking me some time to finish since there's going to be a (potential) time loop MC can get stuck in. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait and see.

i will say im not super invested in the idea of the show giving us too much information on c&a. like itll be super cool if we find out about it! and im sure itll be relevant information if we do but i think the information we get is going to be not super indepth, because im not sure itd match the tone of the show? its less about mystery and like The Lore and more about the characters and examining how different characters respond and have been responding to the environment set up by the show
(it WOULD be fun to learn more details about c&a and i AM curious i just dont think itd actually enhance much abt the show itself, and as such, i dont think its super important writing wise for the audience to learn about it either)
that SAID i do ascribe to the idea that ALL of the cast members worked for c&a before the ended up in the circus, no exceptions. i dont really know how say gangle or zooble wouldve ended up there, but i feel like they all ended up there one way or another. and i think most of the cast doesnt talk about their life in the real world bc its gone and theres no reason to dredge it up (or theyve forgotten it or most aspects of it), but it does make it fascinating that not even pomni, who has the least reason to avoid these topics at least early on, broached the subject of what in the WORLD is c&a UP to. it literally is never brought up ever as of ep 4. which makes me think the company was probably always super shady in some way to the pt that its employees were kinda desensitized to the idea that its c&as fault that horrible things happen
#tadc#i do think any discussion or reveal abt c&a is gonna have less to do w lore#and more abt like... the role that exploitative companies have in the harming of their employees#we see a little bit of it in how gangle has been affected by the same concept in ep 4#and i think theres hints of it in caines character but not enough for me to make a super concrete point about that#point being that i think c&a isnt going to be much of a 'literal' figure in the show so much as what it represents#hence why i dont think well actually learn too much about it. bc itd be kinda pointless and redundant#circus discussion#i think the way gooseworx has described abstraction honestly ties into it#its one of the first pieces of like. 'trivia' (i guess it counts as trivia??) i learned that gave me this feeling w c&a#'you get stripped of every bit of individuality you have and become something completely unrecognizable'#really leans into the idea. also makes sense why gangle being back in a job she had in the real world#would be implied to bring her so close to abstracting then really#i think in general the show is very much centered around people reacting to a bad environment and how different people like. Survive That#and c&a as a company epitomizes that. the circus is an extension of it after all#everything that happens in the circus is the responsibility of c&a#they dont need to tell us about c&a the circus does enough#and it serves to add a grounded element to the setting. cus like yeah theres already many elements drawing from real life#but the idea of working for a shitty company that treats its employees horribly is like. thats smth very grounded in reality#theres more i could go into on that front but i was drawing oc concepts so ill stop this post here#OH YEAH#and also i think the lack of discussion from characters generally implies that they know minimal about what role c&a played in this#so i think it also makes sense for the audience to not see this. pomnis confused abt the setting first and foremost and is adjusting#but the rest of the cast has no reason to question something they know they have no answers to#and if they did talk about it it wouldnt give anything to the audience anyway#except maybe kinger? but i feel like he doesnt actually... have the answers that one might assume he would#certainly involved in some way with c&a computer science wise but we dont even have confirmation of what he specialized in#just that it was computer science. he literally couldve just been the guy who made sure the servers were running at all and thats it#i feel like well never know but apparently pomni being an accountant is relevant so? who knows? maybe we WILL learn about their jobs!

Hi Pia.
I want to ask— do you backup your wips? How do you do it?
I know there are things like Cloud and Dropbox but those are practically at the mercy of big corporations and with ai scraping now being the norm it feels risky saving work with online backup.
Do you use a USB instead?
Unfortunately nothing is risk-free these days.
I once saved a story to three different USBs, all different brands, and they all corrupted. Not all at the same time, but they all eventually lost the data. This was over a period of ten years, but of course some people have been relying on USBs etc. for this long now. Same with CDs burnt with data (something we used to do before USBs were cheap).
In fact a new study shows that over half of all external hard drives and USBs over a certain age (I think around 5 years) are already corrupted and often not being checked enough to check if they're still containing/keeping the data necessary. (To say nothing of entire batches of like Seagate and other brands being notorious for literally just...losing data and corrupting at any point in time - which is an issue for actual hard drives within the computer as well).
USBs and external HDs aren't necessarily safer.
In general it's a good idea to back up in three places, though this still isn't enough to guarantee safety. Those three places should be: a) hard copy (i.e. USB or external hard-drive), b) cloud copy (i.e. Dropbox etc.), c) on the machine itself (if it's a desktop). You can sometimes do like, a + a + c or b + b + a etc.
It still doesn't guarantee preservation of data! I think that's the hardest thing about preserving data and back-ups overall.
I have an extra bonus 'back up' in that 99.5% of all my writing is already public. And that a lot of that writing has additionally been snapshotted into the Wayback Machine. If all my methods somehow corrupted or failed, I could literally copy/paste my stories from AO3 back into Word documents (in fact I've actually done this before because I frequently go back in and edit AO3 chapters for typos etc. but don't mirror those changes in the original documents, so sometimes if I want to update a story, I'll copy/paste the AO3 chapter and override the original document).
Anyway, I use Dropbox Business (cloud), hard external copy (though not as often as I should), desktop version, and then also the AO3 version. Dropbox Business has additional data recovery protections that general Dropbox accounts don't.
We are always at the mercy of big corporations, anon. Big corporations make USBs. They make faulty external hard-drives that we sometimes mistakenly trust. Like no, they're not scraping for AI the same way, but I no longer believe - unfortunately - that this is truly preventable. Short of going a grassroots Linux direction, which...I can't, lol.
(This is a reminder to all writers: Back-up your writing! The beginning of the year is a good time to remember to do it, if you're not doing it every 3 months).
(And also, check all your USB/external hard drives! And make sure they're not your only source for that content, because you would not believe how much they degrade over time.)
If I ever needed a 5th option, I host my own domain and have done so through the same company for over 10 years with very high fidelity, and I would just dump it all into a database there so I could pull it back if necessary. That's not ideal (it's probably the easiest way I could be hacked because I check into the cpanel the least often), but it's doable.
But yeah I've been Dropbox Business for a long time. I don't like everything about them, but I trust them a lot more than Microsoft OneDrive (which I refuse to use) and many other cloud networks.
As for AI scraping, since 99.5% of my stuff is on AO3, it's already been scraped, and it's delusional of me to think it hasn't been. I have already had the majority of my art scraped into Midjourney, so sadly I've reached a level of disgusted acceptance that the gormless unethical billionaires of the world will just do what they want. If it has an internet connection to it, it's probably been scraped or will be scraped and putting something on a USB isn't going to stop that, because it needs to come off a USB if I want to work on an ongoing story.
