The path of the initiate is a winding one. The very nature of our ascent is serpentine. It twists, turns. coils and goes back into itself. Ascension through the spheres is a gradual process. The mystic must take his time, watch his step and perform his work with devotion, or he will be consumed and annihilated by the Great Chaos. The Dragon compels us – but by degrees.

what Is a living being?
[Two articles by Ajahn Amaro discussing the Buddhist meaning of Rebirth and related truths]In the Theravāda Buddhist world, the Sutta on Loving- Kindness is one of the best known, best loved, and most often recited of the Buddha’s discourses.     Wishing: In gladness and in safety,     May all beings be at ease.     Whatever living beings there may be;     Whether they are weak or strong,…

Idealism, the viewpoint that everything is mental construct based on our experience is often associated with a ‘spiritual’ sentiment. However, Idealism is not necessarily the at odds with physicalism, the idea that mental states arise from physical processes. Our experiences may be emergent from physical processes, but we can only understand those processes as mental constructs gleaned from experience. Experience is the fundamental source, but our beliefs of its foundations may be conceptualised from within it.

"Death is our eternal companion. It is always to our left, at an arm's length... It has always been watching you. It always will until the day it taps you."
"How can anyone feel so important when we know that Death is stalking us?"
"The thing to do when you're impatient is to turn to your left and ask advice from your Death. An immense amount of pettiness is dropped if your Death makes a gesture to you, or if you catch a glimpse of it, or if you just have the feeling that your companion is there watching you."
"Death is the only wise adviser that we have. Whenever you feel, as you always do, that everything is going wrong and you're about to be annihilated, turn to your Death and ask if that is so. Your Death will tell you that you're wrong; that nothing really matters outside its touch. Your Death will tell you, 'I haven't touched you yet.'"

By Ajahn Amaro The translation of terms can be very interesting, especially out on the borders where words expire. I remember years ago looking in the glossary of a collection of Vedanta teachings. Where the Sanskrit had a one-word term, the English explanation was a paragraph long. In refined areas of consciousness, English is pretty impoverished. Our language is great at emotions. We’ve got…
