You Should Get A Radio

I want to convince you to get a radio. It can be a pretty cheap one - you can sometimes thrift them even - just something to listen to the music and shows that are literally streaming completely for free all around you right this very moment.

Libraries get a lot of love - deservedly so. They are such a frugal resource for entertainment and the community at large. I would argue that radio is very similar.

Find New Music

Radio can introduce you to music you never would have run across otherwise. Spotify and the like have a goal of getting you to listen for as long as possible. This incentivizes the alorgithm picking your music recs to stay very safely within your known listening profile. But since a radio station is broadcasting to a large number of people, not you individually, you're more likely to run into music you personally wouldn't have picked but actually enjoy.

Not to mention that if you're in the US at least, you're very likely within range of a public broadcasting station which not only has local and national news, but various music shows as well - World Cafe is a treasure. College radio stations, if you have one nearby by, can be hit or miss, but in general, it is a great way to find local and very niche music you wouldn't hear played anywhere else. If you're in a city, you very likely have a couple of hyperlocal low power FM stations - many who serve communities who don't speak English and who have their own unique music programming. I also enjoy a lot of the adult contemporary and "oldies" stations I can get near me.

The Ads Aren't Targeted

On most stations, you'll hear some ads. Some stations you'll hear more than a few. But none of those ads are based on an ever growing mass of information being collected about you and your listening habits to decide what specific ad you're most likely to actually act on. They're just...an ad. When you turn it off, it can't follow you around until you actually buy it.

Also, if you're listening to local stations, a lot of the ads are for local businesses in your community; places owned by your neighbors and the people you live with. For me, it's been a nice way to be reminded of what places exist in my community since I usually go to my regular haunts and nothing else.

Frugal and Fun

Radios can be pretty cheap. I see them in thrift stores pretty regularly around here and you might be able to try Marketplace for one. Mine was a birthday gift and I paid a little more to upgrade the antena later. Mine uses rechargeable batteries but I think they make ones that are just straight up rechargeable now.

Since I can't control the music, I'm not turning to it to skip through music or pick a different playlist or look up a given artist I want to hear because I just remembered they existed. I'm more present, whether I'm just listening to the show or pairing it with something else (recently it's been knitting or solitaire games).

Similar to the way that libraries can be one way you decrease your reliance on subscription culture, radio is another. Especially for public broadcasting stations, the programming is always changing, there are new shows every week, and there are often ways for you to get involved. It's another form of entertainment that often gets overlooked.

It's Screen Free

Not much to say here. It's just a big plus to me. I'm trying to take more breaks from screens and make the time I do spend on screens less addictive. I like that I can throw on a radio station and listen to a show without ever having to resist the urge to check email or something.

Vital in Emergencies

Have you thought of how you'd get information during an emergency if the internet goes out? Radio is a great option and still regularly saves lives. In the event of emergencies, local radio stations are often some of the very first people to get information on where shelters are being set up, where resoruces are being distributed, and how to stay safe through the course of the event. Depending on the event, emergency managers will actually bring in radio equipment to keep broadcasting going if there's been damage to a tower and even set up temporary/mobile station up to get the word out if there's not a local station they can partner with.

On days when the weather isn't looking so great, I often have the weather band radio turned on so I can get the latest NWS forecasts and hear when a watch is issued - phones usually only get warnings unless you go out of your way to sign up for more. And out where I live, I usually don't even get those since cell signal is spotty.

It's a great investment in your safety that you can also enjoy whenever.

Conclusion

Buy a radio. Especially if you're looking to get away from subscriptions and cut costs. You can own your radio - you can't own Spotify. It's also just something I think everyone should have since it's such a vital resource in emergencies.

ETA: I am a young millinial. I grew up with radio and remember a time before the internet so I'm not saying any of this as if I'm discovering it. It's more I've been not only enjoying it a lot lately but reminded that a lot of people aren't aware of everything it offers so I wanted to share that in case it was news to anyone.

Uncrossing With A Directional/Crossroads Cord-Cutting

Note to Reader: This post is alignment with my "Clear Your Path to Spring Success with Path Clearing Magick". This working can also be done in alignment with a Path-Clearing or Road Opener.

In life's journey, we often form connections with many individuals or situations, some of which may no longer serve our highest good. These attachments or cords, at times, can become detrimental, carrying negative energies, crossed conditions, or even manifesting tulpas that can wield influence over our thoughts and perceptions. To address these issues, the practice of a Crossroads or Directional Cord Cutting/Uncrossing can be immensely beneficial. 

The primary goal of this working is to sever all emotional, energetic, and spiritual ties that no longer serve us, including those we might not consciously recognize or know which direction they are coming from. It's important to emphasize that cord-cutting is not a tool for trivial matters, petty disputes, or seeking revenge. Engaging in this practice during moments of anger or emotional turmoil is not advised; instead, it is recommended to undertake this working from a place of clarity. However, I am not your witch mama lol and as a firm believer in free will, follow your intuition and act accordingly.

By actively releasing these attachments or cords, individuals can liberate themselves from the past and facilitate their own personal growth. As you undergo this process, you may experience a profound sense of detachment from situations or individuals that once held significant influence over your emotions. This newfound liberation can pave the way for a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of emotional, energetic, and spiritual freedom.

In essence, cord-cutting serves as a transformative working that encourages both parties to move forward in their respective journeys. As you embark on this spiritual practice, you may find yourself unburdened by the weight of past attachments and cords and find yourself more aligned with your true path. Crossroads/Directional Cord-Cutting & Uncrossing:

Items Needed:

1 black figure candle to represent yourself. Also, a plain black candle will work too if you can't get your hands on a figure one.

4 white candles for the Crossroads & Directions

4 pieces of white cord

4 white pieces of paper with your name and date of birth on them

Frankincense and Myrrh incense for consecration

Uncrossing or Banishing Oil

Crossroads dirt (optional) you can also draw the crossroads

Aluminum pan (optional) I love these to burn in. Makes clean-up a breeze.

Candle Dots Adhesive (optional) you can always melt the end of the candles to your surface. However, these $5 treasures make attaching candles to any surface effortless!

Some hair cuttings (optional) I like using hair as a taglock

Directions:

Begin by burning the Frankincense & Myrrh incense. Use the smoke to cleanse and consecrate your candles, cords, paper, and pan.

Next, write or carve the directions on each white candle and for the black candle write or carve your name and date of birth. Or you can taglock it with some hair in a later step when you apply the Uncrossing Oil.

Now prepare your pan with the crossroads dirt or draw (+) a cross to represent the crossroads inside the pan.

Setup spell work like the picture above. Place a piece of paper with your name and date of birth under each white candle… also place the paper and candles in the correct directions… you might need to use a compass app to find the correct directions of the crossroads for you. It may be tricky tying the cords on the candles...this is where the candle dots help out by reducing the movement of the candles coming undone from the pan.

Put some Uncrossing oil on the white candles only. Work in opposites. North to South, East to West.

Ground and call in spirit guides, ascended ancestors, or any patrons or saints you may work with for your highest well-being and potential. You may want to offer some incense and a glass of water as offering while performing the spell.

Now it's time to open the crossroads by placing your hands over your working and say:

At the crossroads, I stand so bold, Where energy flows, boundless and untold. Paths diverge, choices to be made, Energetic roads, my power to aid.

I open the gates, direct the flow, Guiding the energy, high and low. At the center, I lay, in control and sway, Shaping the future, with each word I say.

Energetic pathways intertwine and bind, From the center, I stand, a force of a kind. Empowered and focused, in this sacred space, I shape destinies with my will and grace.

I command the crossroads to open wide, Reveal the path where destinies collide. Unveil the choices, the options to choose, Let me chart my course, win or lose.

Crossroads, part ways, reveal the unknown, Guide me through the journey I must own. Grant me the wisdom to make my decree, As I command the crossroads, open your gates and set my spirit free.

Put some Uncrossing oil and this would be the time to add some of your hair on the figure candle and say:

Here I stand surrounded by cords, shackles, and chains, workings and bindings against me for other’s desires and gains.

Protection comes to me this day and any unserving cords and crossed conditions will no longer have sway. By this uncrossing and cord-cutting, all unserving energy is sent away, back to the sender from which it came.

• Now call in the fate of the crossroads of the spirit gate and light the figure candle:

As I call to the fates of The Crossroads, I call to my highest self. Gateway of Spirit and Soul. I call you forth and invoke your ancient force. Crush and remove all malevolent entities, all unserving cords & attachments, and all curses & crosses placed upon me. Break & dissolve. Bless and set free. As it is now, so it is & so shall it be!

To be set free I will now call to the powers that be, from every fate of the crossroads to release all cords, crossings, and energy that isn’t serving me.

Now it is time to get ready to call in the fates of the crossroads of each direction and light the candles for each direction. Say the direction first and then light its corresponding candle right after. Remember to work in opposites.

North: As I call to the fates of The Crossroads, I call to the Winds beyond the North gate. Gateway of Air and Father Sky. I call you forth and invoke your ancient force. "why didn't my cord cutting work?"

Hey, so this post is 100% my own beliefs and UPG and how I define stuff. If you are new to magic, please don't mistake my definitions or theories as being universal. This is the way I work, it works for me, but that doesn't mean it will work for everyone.

I'm not going to continuously say "this is just what I believe!" throughout the entire post but please try to keep it in mind.

Cord Cuttings

Unsolved problems: The person wasn't banished; you still have recurring or intrusive thoughts about them; you still miss them or have strong emotions about them; they are still reaching out to you

My theories as to why:

If you believe in energy cords, they're an energetic representation of the relationships between all things.

Cutting a cord does not stop it from regrowing.

Cutting a cord is not banishment.

Cutting a cord does not solve mental health issues related to obsessive or compulsive thinking.

Cutting a cord does not resolve your emotional traumas.

Cord cutting is not a healing spell.

Cord cutting is not a binding that prevents someone from reaching out to you.

Cord cutting is not a ward that prevents practitioners from sending you unwanted things.

Cord cutting does something specific. It stops the energetic flow between two things, until/unless the cord is regrown.

Cord cutting is useful if someone is actively leeching off of your energy or sending you bad energies through your relationship cord.

Conceptualize a cord cutting as blocking someone's phone number so they can't keep texting you. It has put a stop to that connection. But, if this person is insistent, they can just get a new phone number. Or if you're lonely and miss them, you can get around your own block and reach back out.

But no matter how much you block someone, it's not the same thing as seeking help to recover from that relationship. Cord cuttings are not just going to rewire your mind to stop thinking about a person.

And if an unwanted relationship is ongoing and you must be in close proximity to that person, cord cuttings don't replace warding, binding, and banishing.

Hi how do I preform a cord cutting ritual for a toxic person in my life?

Disclaimer this may have some triggering things in it,if they do trigger you you don’t have to respond. I do apologize in advance if anything does trigger you.

to specify what I mean is that this person almost sent me to the hospital last week or could have took my being with hand sanitizer that had 75% rubbing alcohol, made jokes about it when someone confronted them about it saying “yay they can get “silly” now (I censored the word)” and thought they were the victim because they got suspended for Half a day. I have to admit I have done something to them that hurt them, and at the time I didn’t know it would we used to be friends and they said something I made a comment. It made them insecure, hours later they made an inappropriate joke so I smacked them upside the head in a way I thought was gentle. After this I got suspended for a whole week, and apologized to this person.

Alright, so first and foremost fuck the people who suspended you for that long, especially since they only suspended him for half a day for sending you to the HOSPITAL

But for real, if you have a pic of his face, make some copies. There's a LOT you can do, cause the cord cutting probably won't be enough if you are forced to occupy the same space for long periods of time

Let's start with a "shut your mouth" working. Take a lemon, a large needle, thread of your choice, black pepper, cayenne, chili powder, salt, jalapeño seeds, and any other spicy pepper you have on hand (you can also add hot sauce if you have it), and your targets photo (or a name paper if you can't get a pic)

Cut a slit into the lemon to represent his mouth, and speak as such over it. Shove is picture inside the "mouth" and add your ingredients one by one, stating what you want to happen if he speaks to OR about you in any type of way. Ask them to cause his mouth to burn, for him to start choking, for him to stutter and be unable to finish what he was saying ANY time your name is on his tongue

Use the needle and thread to sew this shut, and you can also add thorns and pins if you'd like.

You can either turn this into a jar spell by adding it to a jar and filling it with vinegar, and then praying over the whole jar and keeping it somewhere it won't be easily found by others, or you could go hang this in a tree and ask that as it rots, so too does his mouth and any words he has about you die on his lips

After this is done, you can go to a busy road and grab some dirt, bring it home with you, and add the ashes of his photo to it, black pepper (to banish), black salt (or regular if you don't have black salt)(also to banish), cayenne (to speed things up and cause discomfort), any other hot peppers (for the same reason), you can also set all of this in a cross candle set up with 5 tealights (set them in this order: top, bottom, right, left, center) and pray over the whole thing for him to leave your life and never come back to bother you. Once the candles burn out, take the mixture back to the road, and make sure upu throw it on the side that specifically leads AWAY from town, and then don't look back when you leave

I would wait to do a regular cord cutting till he's actually gone, personally, but you could take some twine and 2 candles, you can soak the twine in lemon juice, carve your name in one candle and one in his and tie the string around both candles. Light the candles, and then as you pray for the cord to be cut, literally cut the cord with some scissors, and let the candles burn

The other method is to just let the flame take the cord out, but that doesn't always work. It can show you how hard the other person is holding on though, it's a good way to divine how difficult it will be to get rid of someone

After all of this though I definitely recommend cleansing yourself, and your space, and then doing some blessing spells on yourself and space as well. You can make a blessed oil by praying psalm 23 over it, like a bottle of olive oil or something, and you can do a solid cleansing by making some instant coffee and praying over it for it to clear away any unwanted energies, anything that could still be tying you to him, and anything that may have tried to attach itself to you through this process (not likely, but better to do this asap just in case) and then take a shower normally, and after you are clean, pour the cooled coffee over your head and try to make sure it hits every part of you, or at least all of your head and shoulders

If you can, let yourself air dry after this, but if you can't just pat yourself dry instead of rubbing, and use a blow dryer. IMEDIATELY use the blessed oil to annoint yourself asking for blessings once you're dry (forehead, crown, back of head, shoulders, palms, and bottoms of feet)

Have you ever done cord-cutting or a similar ritual to help move on from some sort of relationship (platonic or otherwise). If so, could you tell me your method? Thank you in advance if you take the time to do so!

I haven't done a cord-cutting in many years, since which I've seen some elaborate cord-cutting rituals on tiktok that are just... nothing like what I've done.

Personally my advice would be to keep things simple and not turn it into a whole production with built-in divination and fire hazard. You're trying to move on and not be stuck on this thing, so why make it into such a big deal?

The way I see it is this is basically simple sympathetic magic. The cord represents your connection*. You cut the cord (you don't need to use fire for this, scissors are made for cutting, or a fancy knife might make it feel more magical). You dispose of the cord. Now you do your best to move on and not obsess over the relationship. You can do whatever it is you usually do to set the stage for spell casting (if that's a thing you do), but at its heart it's about the symbolism.

*Note that I have seen some debate over what the cord is -- some people believe it represents your energetic bond and that even if you don't want to think about that person, your energetic bond might serve some important purpose so you should really think hard before you cut it. Again, I feel like this is overcomplicating things (and the cord can represent what you tell it to represent), but it's a perspective that's out there (also I might not be remembering the details exactly because it's not my own perspective). If you're worried about this, you can call back your energy before you do the cord cutting. Take back what you've invested in that relationship.

Other simple approaches for moving on include writing their name down and either burning the paper, or washing it until the name washes away. If you go for the latter, you might want to test some ink options first, because I've made the mistake of using ink that won't wash off until the paper is disintegrating around it.
